Over the years of production, the power units have been constantly improved, so it is not surprising that there are many modifications of "60" and "62" UAZs, under the hood of which you can find gasoline or diesel engines with a volume of 2.2 to 2.9 liters and a capacity from 96 to 132 hp One thing remained unchanged - four-wheel drive with manual connection of the front axle and mechanical box gear.

The short-wheelbase UAZ 3160 can be considered the first representative of the new wave of UAZs. Work on the car began in the 80s, and in the early 90s the first samples appeared that could be shown to the public. The car received a modernized frame chassis of its predecessor (UAZ-3153) and a completely new all-metal body. A novelty is also the interior, which is close in terms of comfort to passenger cars, which the previous UAZs could not boast of. For example, the seats here are equipped with head restraints, the driver's - with an increased range of adjustments, including even lumbar support. The usual "passenger" front panel, although it is a heritage of the 70s-80s, is much more comfortable and functional than any UAZ of previous years. In 2000, the first serial UAZ-3162 Simbir appeared with an increased base and a modernized chassis, as well as Spicer bridges. The improvement of the car continued, and it received a more or less complete look in the form of the UAZ Simbir of the 2004 model, presented in the Standard (31622-70) and Comfort (31622-100) trim levels. V standard equipment included fog lights, multifunction steering wheel switches, electric heating and rear door glass wiper, central locking, audio preparation. The Comfort package offers a more modern dashboard, as well as full power accessories (adjustment and heating of side mirrors, sunroof drive, power windows for front doors).

Initially, the UAZ 3160 and UAZ 3162 were equipped with carburetor engines 421.10 (2.9 l, 115 hp) produced by UMP and ZMZ, then more modern motors with distributed injection 4213.10 (2.9 l, 104 hp). Even more power - in modifications with 2.7-liter engines ZMZ-409.10 and ZMZ-4092.10 (128 and 132 hp). If we talk about diesel versions, the first to appear was the version with the Italian VM-425 diesel engine, which was “registered” in the UAZ-31604 model: direct injection, displacement 2.5 liters, power 103 hp. (at 4200 rpm) and an impressive torque of 235 Nm (at 2000 rpm). The indices of the own turbodiesel ZMZ-5143.10 are slightly more modest - 96-98 hp. and 216 Nm of torque. If we talk about fuel consumption, the UAZ does not complain about a lack of appetite - only the declared consumption in the extra-urban cycle is 12.5 l / 100 km for carburetor engines and 10.4-10.7 l / 100 km for injection engines. The diesel ones are lower - in the combined cycle, 8.2-13.5 l / 100 km are declared. The SUV is equipped with two tanks that hold 85-90 liters of fuel.

UAZ 3160/3162 has a dependent suspension both front and rear. Ahead - a spring suspension with an anti-roll bar. Rear axle - on two longitudinal semi-elliptical small leaf springs. The car's steering is of the “screw-ball nut” type with a hydraulic booster and an adjustable steering column. The drive is permanent rear, with a rigidly connected front axle. Transfer case 2-speed with a reduction gear. On the 3160 there were new Spicer-type axles with a one-piece crankcase and quick-connect couplings of the front axle half shafts. The design of the brakes was adjusted together with the specialists of the company "Lukas" - ventilated disc brakes with two-piston calipers at the front, drum brakes at the rear with automatic clearance adjustment. The spacious luggage compartment has a volume of 630 liters for the short wheelbase (2400 mm) 7-seater version and 1520 liters for cars with a base of 2760 mm and a 9-seater cabin. At maximum load, the usable volume increases to 2833 and 3490 liters, respectively.

Although the safety performance of these UAZ models is far from modern standards, the modernization has made the car a little better in this regard. For example, thanks to the intermediate cardan shaft in the steering and spline connection, the steering wheel is injury-free here. The compact, spring-loaded front suspension makes the side members at the front of the frame more energy-efficient. The car received three-point inertia-type seat belts, an additional brake light.

UAZ 3160 and the Simbir 3162 based on it are the choice for those who need a serious SUV, practical, maintainable, even if it has an archaic design. The UAZ Simbir of the last years of production (2003-2005) deserves more interest in terms of equipment, especially in the Comfort package. These cars have fewer differences from the first Patriots (except for the exterior and some details in the interior) and even on DROM.RU their owners often post ads in the "Patriot" section. In general, when buying, it is not so much the years of manufacture of the car that are more important than the price and level technical condition as well as the required investments.

Have Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant there was one main customer in the Soviet Union - the Ministry of Defense. That is why the UAZ-469 was created in strict accordance with the technical specifications of the military, but consumers from the national economy had to put up with the features of the car associated with its main purpose.

Back in the early eighties, work began on new three- and five-door SUVs in Ulyanovsk, which were supposed to replace the UAZ. As you might guess, the military ordered the tune, so in the eighties the five-door UAZ-3172 (ROC Wagon) was designed in accordance with their requirements. However, military orders began to gradually decrease, and civilian consumers both could not and did not want to buy UAZ products in large quantities - the UAZs were too specific to drive them on public roads.

But then the plant faced another problem - a technological one. Due to the low automation of production, working conditions were difficult, and the workers in these shops were not permanent workers, but "temporary workers" - including those sent by those who subsequently received new cars assembled at UAZ. This did not affect the quality of the cars in the best way.

That is why, by the time when, after the transition to "self-supporting rails", the plant had its own money and the ability to dispose of it, the management decided to reconstruct the body production and mount robotic welding lines, which could produce not only cars for the military and the national economy, but also products for private buyers.

Until the beginning of the nineties, a private trader could not buy a new Ulyanovsk SUV - it was really possible to "get" only a decommissioned UAZ. But with the transition to a market economy, everything changed dramatically.

At that moment, it became clear that the UAZ-3172, "stalled" in time due to the agony of the USSR, could not be produced at new production facilities, if only because it was designed without taking into account the use of robots, and in general, the project stopped at the level of running samples without ready-made chassis solutions.

Therefore, in Ulyanovsk they decided not to "finish" the first development, but to create new body, having rolled the existing chassis of model 3151 under it. Vyacheslav Osipov became the lead designer of the project, who, together with his colleagues, needed to solve a difficult task - "cross a bull with a rhinoceros", that is, combine the old base from a military machine with a modern and comfortable "top", having received exit a competitive SUV with a good set of consumer qualities.

But in Ulyanovsk they acted quite outside the box: VAZ specialists were attracted to design a new body - more precisely, the appearance of the new model was taken up at the VAZ Scientific and Technical Center, where at that time they were working on a project for a new Niva under the index. There were several reasons: firstly, at the Ulyanovsk automobile plant itself, work on model 3172 for the military was a priority for its staff members. Secondly, the newly launched scientific and technical center in Togliatti had the most modern technologies, and the VAZ itself was the undisputed leader in the creation of fundamentally new models - suffice it to recall the VAZ-2121,. In Ulyanovsk, there was simply no experience in creating "civilian" cars from scratch, especially in the part related to design.

The appearance of the future UAZ-3160 was taken up by V. Stepanov, one of those designers of the STC VAZ, who, along with V. Syomushkin and A. Belyakov, created several trial versions of the appearance of the new Niva VAZ-2123.

After all, such a distance between the axles is usually typical for "three-doors", and not SUVs with five doors. In Ulyanovsk, the three-door modification was not even considered due to the banal lack of funds even for mastering the basic model.

Simbir is the name that was used from the very beginning at the plant to designate a new family. However, it never took root in everyday life: new UAZ before the appearance of the 3162, it was still called the "UAZ".


Deceptive impression: UAZ-3160 seems large, although in length it is comparable to an ordinary runabout!

The new body and the old chassis were poorly "friends" not only in geometrical dimensions- during the layout and finishing work, it became obvious that chassis Thirty years ago, it requires, if not a cardinal revision, then at least the correction of the most obvious shortcomings. Moreover, the Ulyanovsk designers, thanks to the work on the 3172 family, had a good set of developments on the elements of the chassis, which would have made it possible to bring the UAZ closer to driving performance to ordinary cars.

Revolution through evolution

While working on the UAZ-3160 in Ulyanovsk, they literally dreamed of a new engine - powerful, environmentally friendly and high-torque. Having tried on the promising 16-valve ZMZ-406 at that time, they were a little disappointed in it - what was close to the Volga turned out to be insufficient for a large and heavy SUV. The experiments on the installation of French Peugeot diesels and Italian VMs were of rather speculative interest - the price of cars with an imported "heart" would be too exorbitant. That's why the best option ended up UMP engine with a working volume of 2.89 liters, which was produced by JSC Volzhskie Motory (former Ulyanovsk Motor Plant) both in carburetor (UMZ-421.10-10, 98 hp) and injection (UMZ-4213, 110 hp) .) execution.


They decided not to change the transmission scheme - too many innovations would be required, so the UAZ-3160 was content with the traditional "part-time" with a rigidly connected front axle and no differential locks, although a new transfer case with center differential, which would allow driving with the included front end and on paved roads.

But in front, instead of traditional springs, a compact spring suspension was used, which made it possible to improve passive safety by increasing the energy-absorbing capacity of the front frame side members, and at the rear - small-leaf springs. It is interesting that the wheelbase of the "shorty" in comparison with the usual UAZ still increased by 20 mm, but, alas, the eye does not notice this.

Despite the initial plans not to touch the chassis and transmission, the UAZ-3160 received a number of new units that distinguished it favorably from its predecessor. Especially for the "sixty" on the basis of the usual "four-stage" they created a five-speed fully synchronized box, which was distinguished by the presence of a fifth gear crankcase docked to the body. In addition, a completely new "five-stage" with a common aluminum crankcase was developed, but the serial UAZ-3160 did not wait for it, and many cars, due to a lack of components, were generally equipped with a four-speed gearbox.

In an effort to simplify the driver's handling of the transmission, the designers also changed the control scheme of the fine-modular transfer case, assigning this task to one lever, and it was impossible to turn on the "lowering" without connecting the front axle. Yes, and the driving axles themselves became different - instead of not the most rigid and durable bridges of the "Timken" type, the UAZ-3160 was equipped with the so-called "Tchaikovsky" bridges of the "Spicer" type, with a one-piece crankcase, and flags were provided in the front wheel hubs to connect the front axle, and hinges of a more advanced design made it possible to increase their angle of rotation.

And that's not all: the UAZ-3160 received a traumatic steering column with height adjustment, as well as hydraulic power steering, which facilitates maneuvering at low speeds and reduces impacts "on the steering wheel" when driving off-road.

They did not forget about brakes in Ulyanovsk: together with Lucas, the designers developed ventilated disc front brakes with two-piston calipers, and the rear drum brakes received an automatic supply of pads to the drums.

Thus, on the technical side, the "sixty" made a big step forward from a stern car for the military to an ordinary car for ordinary citizens.


Having become much more attractive in appearance and more comfortable inside, the UAZ-3160 has retained the potential of a real SUV with excellent geometric cross-country ability.

No longer had to endure hardships and hardships in the cabin, which was previously the Achilles heel of Ulyanovsk cars. In fact, on the previous "UAZ" cars there was no interior as such, while new model received a "human" interior with a plastic trim for the instrument panel and doors, dropping glasses, a puffy steering wheel rim, a developed center console and other interior attributes familiar to passenger cars.

At the same time, the salon of the "sixty" was not only attractive, but also functional: the rear seat could be folded in parts (2: 1), and in luggage compartment folding seats were provided, thanks to which the UAZ-3160 could take on board up to seven people, including the driver.

Instead of a tailgate, VAZ designed and subsequently patented a door opening to the side with a spare wheel hung on it, but for some reason the "gate" opened to the right side - that is, towards the sidewalk, just like on Japanese right-hand drive jeeps.

Despite the fact that pre-production samples were shown to the general public back in 1993, due to economic turmoil and funding problems, the UAZ-3160 reached the conveyor only a few years later and a year later than planned - only in 1997.

The first two bodies in the new workshop were welded on June 20, and on August 5, the first five production cars of the new family rolled off the main assembly line of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant. The launch of the new model became a big and important event not only for the factory workers, but also for the country itself, which received a completely domestic, but at the same time quite modern and affordable SUV.

It is important that in terms of build quality and color, the "sixty" was noticeably superior to the previous "UAZ" cars, and as an option in some trim levels, electric windows were provided, alloy wheels, sunroof, "kenguryatnik" and footrests.

However, domestic motorists were in no hurry to buy a new model for several reasons. Firstly, the new model turned out to be rather "raw", because the finishing work was devoted not so much time as it took to get rid of all "childhood diseases". Secondly, UAZ could be considered affordable only in comparison with foreign counterparts, but relative to previous cars and domestic cars, the "sixty" was quite expensive. Finally, the first happy customers faced real problems: in case of failure of components and assemblies, it was very problematic to repair them under warranty! Individual copies, due to the use of bypass production technologies, during the first year of operation managed to get for repairs more than a dozen (!) Times, having stood in the service for a total of several months.

The stable mass production of the UAZ-3160 was mastered two years after the start of mass production, in 1999. Since 2001, the "sixties" began to be equipped with modern 2.7-liter 16-valve injection engines ZMZ-4092 with a capacity of 132 hp, which developed 143 "horses" on cars of the latest releases. However, in 2002-2003, small batches of cars equipped with diesel engines were assembled - both the domestic ZMZ-5143.10 turbo engine and foreign Peugeot and VM engines.

In addition to the usual "short" version, in the early 2000s in Ulyanovsk they began to produce a car that finally assigned the name "Simbir" to the family: UAZ-3162 with an increased wheelbase, which looks much more attractive than the "sixties" due to the changed body proportions.

In addition, due to the wider rear doors in the "long" UAZ, landing on the second row was much more convenient. That is why the buyers preferred the UAZ-3162, and not the "shorty", the demand for which quickly faded away. For this reason, already in 2003, the production of the base UAZ-3160 was stopped, focusing on the production of the UAZ-3162 and its derivatives. However, this does not diminish the fact that it was the "sixty" at one time that turned an important page in the book of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant, both stylistically and constructively becoming the basis for models of modern lineup UAZ - for example, Patriot.
