Our first Vesta Cross test can answer the question whether it is necessary to overpay 43 thousand rubles for the Cross or stay at the calm universal Vesta. Cross, it seems, is shouting, take me, he struggled to prove his case and even climbed the almost vertical wall of the Sochi forest. I will not list all the station wagons that I had, starting with the VAZ 2102, my evolution for today stopped at the beveled rear door of the Audi A7. Surprisingly, it seems, in pursuit of the tastes of buyers like me, Lada moved away from an almost vertical rear wall in its new station wagon. True, the tilt of the rear window turned out to be not so strong as to give up the wiper, as in my Sportback, but sufficient for the roof line to acquire the dynamics that are fashionable now.

What kind of dynamic roofline they were thinking about then, they loaded the refrigerator into the country. And the universal Vesta even on the roof carries a "shark fin" - it is an outdoor antenna. This is what competition for me, my beloved, means.

According to Lada designer Steve Mattin, "the roofline, starting from the exterior mirrors, and the" shark fin "form a kind of airy elegant X". It turns out that there are never too many Xs on a clean car. If not for the X, I thought it would be Volvo. The twin chromed tailpipe is modern, with room on the right for two more fake pipes.

Our first Vesta Cross test took place in Sochi, where we rode both through the forest and up steep hills, Cross sports more aggressive bumpers with black and silver linings, and, of course, a body kit around the perimeter of the entire body. It seems like a props, but with frequent driving on dirt and simply dirty roads, the linings should extend the life of the paint on the sills and wheel arches. And this is already a question of corrosion resistance and presentation of station wagons after several years of intensive operation. But the owners of simple station wagons, in the event of a rear-end collision, can save money - their bumper is completely borrowed from the sedan. But Cross's bumpers are original and rather complexly organized.

For Lada Vesta, the cross in the forest is somehow calmer, the plastic body kit protects.

Can the refrigerator be immersed?

The declared volume of the trunk is 480 liters. It seems not bad at all, but opening the back door reveals a clearly smaller hold, not every refrigerator will fit. However, the floor panels are lifting, and under them is a pair of organizers with a total volume of 95 liters. For convenience, the trunk can be divided into 2 parts, as well as completely remove the plastic organizers.

With the second row seats folded down - 825 liters. The double floor with the organizer aims to create a level area when folding the backs of the rear seats, but, as we can see, it is not very successful. The rear seat cushion will not stand up vertically, it must be removed from the passenger compartment to level the floor, you can remove it, but this is not an easy task.

Under the main floor, of course, there is a full-size spare wheel, however, it is 15-inch and on a steel rim. Next to the spare wheel is another organizer and a thick layer of noise insulation. There are also storage compartments along the sides of the boot, bag hooks and even a 12-volt socket. An unexpected luxury for a budget car. The fifth door is closed with powerful handles, which are provided both on the right and on the left.

With the new rear doors, getting into the back seat has become more convenient. A central armrest with a pair of cup holders has appeared, and in the maximum version for those sitting in the back, a heated rear sofa, a USB connector and a 12-volt outlet are provided. But the headrests are not very comfortable - in the upper position they are low for people 180 cm and taller.

Over the past 2 years, VAZ not only managed to develop a station wagon, but also slightly modified the interior. The top-end versions finally have a full-fledged center armrest. It is convenient to put your right hand on it, and there is a small compartment inside. In order to cheer up the driver, the Vesta SW and Vesta Cross received a painted instrument panel.

In a simple station wagon, the instruments are only slightly summed up in color, while the raised version has the Cross inscription on the speedometer and brighter accents. In addition, it is distinguished by contrasting inserts on the seats, different ornaments on the plastic inserts of the dashboard and doors, as well as chrome handles. But the 1.8-liter 122-horsepower engine disappointed. Even when paired with mechanics borrowed from Renault, the engine clearly falls short of expectations. We drove Vesta together, and when accelerating to the floor, the speed gain in higher gears is slow. Perhaps the problem is that the test cars have not yet been run-in, and only 500-600 km on the odometers. However, Korean classmates, already at the exit from the factory, drive better even with a more modest volume of 1.6 liters. Against their background, the VAZ engine trembles under load and even after 2000 rpm does not pamper with a reserve of traction. Yes, Togliatti units have proven to be very reliable and maintainable, but in the modern world this is not enough. They clearly need to improve traction both at the bottom and at high revs.

Lada-Vesta-SW-Cross, like the station wagon brother, is equipped with two engines - 1.6 (106 hp) and 1.8 liters (122 hp).

The classic machine is missing.

And, of course, the main problem of the entire Vesta family is the lack of a full-fledged automatic transmission. It is no coincidence that only cars with mechanics were on the test, VAZ employees perfectly understand the inferiority of their robot (AMT) and try not to show it to journalists once again. We can only hope for help from abroad. Either Vesta will receive a Jatco 4-speed automatic, which was again installed on Granta, or the French will share a CVT from Renault Kaptur.

On the Vesta road, the station wagon is practically no different from the sedan. The body is very rigid and the car follows the wheel perfectly. A steering wheel with a standard electric booster is an example of accuracy and information content. Vesta Cross is 25 mm higher (station wagon ground clearance 178 mm) and this had its effect. While driving quietly, the difference is almost imperceptible, but a little deeper body roll is felt on the crossbars, which stems not only from the high suspension, but also from the wider and grippy Pirelli tires.

And when leaving the asphalt, it is better to slow down a little. Low-profile 17-inch wheels do not favor sharp irregularities, and, secondly, the increase in ground clearance has led to a reduction in rebound travel. On bends in the road, the wheels are now and then in the air.

When hanging one wheel, the trunk opens easily, which indicates sufficient rigidity of the body.

If the car is locked in this position, the trunk will open perfectly, which is great. However, in terms of cross-country ability, the reduction in rebound travel is a definite disadvantage. So, if the need for increased ground clearance is not too great, try to get by with the regular West station wagon or consider switching to more modest rims, perhaps tires with an off-road pattern are better suited. But this is already a topic for a separate conversation when the time comes for the all-wheel drive Vesta.

Will there be four-wheel drive?

When asked head-on about the release date of Vesta Cross with all-wheel drive, VAZ employees are evasive in Russian. They say that the market is hardly ready to buy such a car in large volumes, and while there is no confirmed demand, there is no production. But given that the rear beam on Vesta is very similar to that of the Lada Largus, and therefore the Renault Duster, technically there is probably such an opportunity. It remains only to dock the box to the VAZ engine not from Logan, but from the all-wheel drive Duster, choose the appropriate length of the cardan shafts and adjust the clutch in the rear wheel drive. But given that the construction of the station wagon took from Togliatti 2 years instead of the promised one, the four-wheel drive Vesta will have to wait in the hope that it will remain in the fashion trend.

So which one to choose?

For those who want a truly large trunk, it is definitely better to look at the larger Lada Largus, it will take almost twice as much luggage, and it will be more convenient for passengers. But in fact, Largus is a big Logan of the first generation, with all that it implies. Vesta is the choice of a driver who wants to get a stylish and dynamic car first of all, and a beautifully finished trunk and increased ground clearance are a pleasant bonus that distinguishes Vesta Cross from the line of ordinary sedans. Well, in general, we got the hint.

We also add that Vesta Cross is a good signal that Lada ... (ugh, ugh, ugh) can.

Judging cynically - only in terms of money - the station wagon puts the Cross on its shoulder blades with an advantage of 116 thousand. The "off-road" option is not cheaper than 755,900 rubles, while the SW is available for 639,900 - only 32,000 more expensive than a sedan of the same filling. But there is a nuance: "Cross" is not yet released in available trim levels, the price list starts immediately with the highest performance Luxe. And SW begins with Comfort, where there are no side airbags, foglights, a double boot floor, heated windshield, light and rain sensors, climate control ... On the other hand, a person hardened by Zhiguli will safely classify all these things as excesses. And for a comfortable life in "Comfort", even against the background of foreign cars, there is a lot: a pair of pillows, a stabilization system with ABS and traction control, steering wheel tilt and reach, central locking with a folding key, heated seats, electric windows in a circle, air conditioning, music and even cruise control. Therefore, the first point is sent to the more affordable, but not poor SW.

The difference in billing persists as the cargo compartments are completely identical. But for the trunks, both Vestas get two points. Barely restrained himself not to add three. After all, the domestic auto industry has never done anything like this. Finally, we started thinking about people! Even Skoda will envy such a competent organization of space with its Simply Clever solutions. Both Ladas are full of hooks, nets, an outlet, lighting, a secret compartment in the wall on the right, a tray for rags and other trifles. And most importantly - Russian know-how: a special pocket for a five-liter bottle of water or a canister with a washer. They are proposed to be placed in a convenient niche on the port side and fixed with an elastic strap. Even if you put eggs in the trunk: with such a fixation, nothing will fly and break against the walls. There is only one problem - there is not enough space. The unification of the floor with the sedan did not allow squeezing more than 480 liters from the station wagon (like in a four-door). And this is taking into account the "two-story" underground: an organizer around the 15-inch spare wheel and removable trays above it. Even in the five-door "Vest" there is no hatch for long cars, and the backrest of the back sofa, divided in a ratio of 40:60, does not know how to fold into the horizon.

Vesta SW is not a puzoterka: 178 mm under the steel protection of the power unit is a normal option for Russia. And Cross is even more versatile. He has as much as 203 mm under a flat belly. Vazovtsy did not embellish, the body was really lifted to new heights - an impartial tape measure confirmed. For comparison, popular crossovers like the Kia Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan or Ford Kuga have real ground clearance of about 180 mm. But the Cross will not have all-wheel drive yet. And coupled with the road tires Pirelli Cinturato P7 205/60 R17 (for SW - Matador Elite 3 195/55 R16) these are the main limitations on flotation. But as long as there is enough grip and geometry, the Cross crawls forward. What we saw for ourselves when the clumsy standard navigation led us to a very rough dirt road, where, as a colleague recalled, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport SUV was recently tested. Raised "Vesta" slid down the slope, jumped over the boulders, took a mud ford and stumbled only on a damp rise, pitted with ruts. On the way back, Cross had to be slightly pushed up the hill, but most importantly, we got out. The off-road exam is passed, get a point in the piggy bank.

Perhaps motors are the weakest point of the new station wagons, we fine both cars by one point. We don’t know how SW and Cross behave with the base 1.6-liter 106-horsepower VAZ-21129 - they were not brought for a test drive, but the Vestas with the flagship engine, to put it mildly, did not please. The new VAZ-21179 unit seems to have a solid volume - 1.8 liters, and a decent power - 122 hp, the torque due to the phase shifter at the inlet is quite good - 170 N ∙ m. But at the very least, all this works only on the plain. And when we went deeper into the mountains from the Sochi coast, the Vesta became completely sluggish: the engine was empty at the bottom, it was sad at the top, the middle was so-so - no matter how fast you keep up, sometimes the car, not just to accelerate on the slopes, did not want to, it demanded to switch to the gear down ... It is doubly stressful to crawl along the lane - you have to play with the clutch. As a result - consumption under 12-13 liters of 92nd gasoline. Below 9 liters, the onboard computer has never shown at all for the entire time. But the station wagons are only 50-70 kg heavier than the sedan ... By the way, according to VAZ logic, SW is a Sport Wagon. Sounds like a wicked irony. Well, at least the 1.8 engine no longer suffers from detonation, other childhood illnesses also seem to have been cured, but in the morning the cold engine still upset a couple of times with unexpected traction failures.

The Vesta station wagon is a quiet car. The tires, the engine, the wind are heard about the same, the noise does not press on the ears. And the "crickets" in the hard plastic of the interior do not squeal even on the primer. I would like to believe that the details will not loosen over time and the front suspension will not knock, as on the sedans of the first releases

Gearboxes: 2: 2

The main "transmission" trouble of the five-door "West" is the lack of a normal automatic transmission. True, VAZ employees swear that buyers have learned how to handle the obstinate robot AMT (2182) and do not express any complaints about it. But it seems to us that only those people who have never driven a car with a good automatic transmission say so. The skills of the five-speed robot "Lada" are best illustrated by the acceleration figures to "hundreds": automated station wagons 1.8 take an indecently long time for this - 12.9-13.3 s, while with mechanics the numbers are much more optimistic - 10.9- 11.2 sec. Manual gearboxes, by the way, are different: Vestam 1.6 is equipped with a domestic transmission 2180, and modifications from 1.8 are equipped with a French JR5. And we liked it: it switches quite clearly, easily, does not buzz or howl. But in general, there is nothing to accrue points here, the score in the battle remains the same.

An armrest with a box appeared between the front seats (useful, but it interferes with fastening and shifting gears), the seat heating is now three-stage, the glove compartment lid with a microlift, and the windshield heating is turned on with a separate button. These things are coming to the sedan soon.

For the SW station wagon, engineers have defined special rear springs in order to adapt the chassis to different stiffness and weight of the five-door body. Therefore, the behavior on the road, this version resembles a sedan. It lays just as tightly, with excitement it turns into a turn under the gas discharge and pleases with a lively response to the steering wheel turns. Never before have Russian station wagons driven so "tasty". But the high Cross turned out to be even more interesting! VAZ employees chose a difficult, but correct way to increase the ground clearance - they completely replaced the springs and shock absorbers, expanded the track by 14 mm, spending a lot of time fine-tuning the driving performance. As a result, the “off-road” version did not become more rollable, retained an acceptable smoothness on low-profile 17-inch wheels, and even won in handling: the “Cross” has a cleaner steering wheel, richer effort on it, the car is more stable on an arc in a turn. Only the edging of the instrument dials was painted red in vain - the numbers are hard to read. But still Cross deservedly takes the lead in points. A small note: on the serpentine stilettos, the front tires of the Cross were rubbing against the support cups of the suspension springs. We hope this is a single problem in our car, as well as the decorative engine cover that came off the mounts ...

Auto brand Lada, producing its cars, every year a little closer to world standards. In the plans, such a motor will be installed not only on the serial version of the station wagon, but also to endow it with the Cross versions, which are also produced by AvtoVAZ.

The start of production promises to begin with the fact that in the engine compartment of the Vesta Cross with increased cross-country ability, we will see one of two versions of a 1.6-liter engine with a capacity of 106 or 114 horsepower.

They will be aggregated with a five-speed mechanics. A robotic transmission will be optionally available. The platform of the Lada Vesta sedan is taken as a base.

In the development of the latter, along with the VAZ engineers, high-profile specialists from Renault-Nissan were directly involved.

On the bottom of the strengths of any Vesta is the exterior. Outwardly, Vesta is pleasant even to me. But the SW Cross version is practically a masterpiece. Mark this point: I praise WHA, and there is no sarcasm in my words. This is rare. But the station wagon looks really very dignified.

In the parking lot next to Vesta there was another "barn", the brand of which, unfortunately, I did not even remember. But I noticed that I compared a foreign car with a VAZ, and I liked the VAZ more. Unlike many faceless carriers of potatoes, flour sacks and tomato seedlings, this wagon is quite harmonious. And even its cross-version looks like a god kissed the designer in the eye. Everything is in its place, all proportions are observed exactly. A rather big car, in principle, does not look bulky, but solid.

It is especially worth noting that the clearance of the SW Cross is pretty decent - 203 mm (for example, it is only 190 mm), but it does not seem like an SUV or even a crossover Vesta. The second thing that distinguishes the SW Cross interior is a full-fledged armrest. Albeit without adjustments, but well located and decent looking. Here's a laugh, but for the owner of this particular car, a normal armrest was one of the factors that made him choose the "raised" station wagon, and not the sedan, although nowadays you have to stand in line for SW Cross, and "ordinary" Vestas are available from dealers in available in almost any design.

It is impossible not to mention the luggage compartment. Of course, the station wagon is designed to heap bags from Auchan, skis, suitcases, a potted ficus, two spare wheels, a canary in a cage and a diesel generator through the back door. And then all this rumbles there mixed up with the chirping of a bird. But in SW Cross, this is not worth fearing. If you wish, you can put something in a small compartment, fenced with a net, or in an organizer. If you need to transport something large, you can remove the rear shelf. Well, and already if we started looking at the car from the outside, we will open the hood. There is nothing new here, but pay attention to this detail. We scolded our Vesta for a constantly dirty engine: everything flew from the road under the hood at once. Everything is clean right there, despite the fact that the weather is not at all predisposing to this. Either the seal was changed, or the slightly higher height from the road affected this, but so far the engine compartment looks new. And this is good.

SW Cross and Russian road

Let's now take a look at how this cute car drives. But first, of course, let's get behind the wheel.

Sometimes a high waist helps a lot. And some just like to sit higher. In this car, you can really climb to a decent height, and most importantly, do not rest your head on the roof. There is enough space in the cabin, you can go and play the button accordion. And this is also a plus.


The minus begins as soon as you start to get under way. Yes, here again these three damned Russian letters are to blame - AMT, it is also an automated mechanical transmission, it is in common parlance - "robot". Probably, you can get used to it too. Maybe he doesn't kick that much. I even admit the thought of its durability. But even when I am dying, I will only ask two questions. One - about the meaning of life (but this is not certain), and the second - how it was possible to make such a box.


I can already see how the adherents of single-link "robots" are rolling their eyes now, who will remember both the efficiency and the low cost of a technical solution in comparison with a hydromechanical machine. Self-hypnosis is such a thing, you can give any arguments. And you can get used to everything - even to a 20-year mortgage for 5 million rubles for a one-room apartment outside the Moscow Ring Road. But it just so happened that every time you change to Vesta with AMT after a car with a normal automatic transmission, you want to cry. Or write critical articles. So…

The first is the lack of a parking mode. Now in St. Petersburg night frosts alternate with daytime thaws, and the snow, by some miracle, still fell. And I would really not want to put the car on the hand brake at night after day trips, so that the pads do not freeze. But there is also a nice moment: disc brakes are on the back of the SW Cross. On the sedan, as everyone remembers, there are drums. So the fears of running around a car with a kettle in the morning are much less.

The second is the logic of gear shifting. Here it became a little better with unexpected reactions to pressing the gas pedal: the car starts off predictably (but, of course, only when you press the gas pedal - if you just release the brake, it will stand still, well, or it will roll forward or backward, depending on from the slope of the road). But already starting with the second transfer, some kind of confusion begins. What is this "robot" thinking about when he suddenly starts picking up the right gears? Singing Grebenshchikov's songs to himself? Proves Fermat's Theorem? Trying to somehow process the ECU data? Do not know. But some of the switches are very unexpected. Although soft.

The opposite situation. We are driving in third gear at low revs, in front there is an empty section to the traffic light, the timer of which is counting down the last seconds. We press on the gas in order to have time to pass under the permitting signal. Well, where is the second gear? But there is no it. The motor can't even spin up, we can't pick up speed either. That's it, the brake: green is already blinking ... It's good that there is a manual mode. You can ride with him. Most likely, you can drive in automatic mode. But you have to get used to it, and you don't want to get used to it, you know.

Therefore, I will repeat the well-known, in general, truth: West needs to buy on mechanics. Or cultivate driving skills that you don't need on normal cars.

Here are the pendants - pleased. The behavior of the car, in my opinion, is markedly different from the sedan. In principle, there were no complaints about the sedan either: I liked how Vesta held the road. Even at those speeds that cost from five thousand to deprivation of the right to drive a vehicle.



SW Cross has become even more "collected". After the test drive, I made some inquiries: indeed, there are technical differences in the suspensions - there are completely different springs and shock absorbers here. At the same time, it cannot be said that the car has become tougher. No, it still assumes comfortable movement, you don't have to close your eyes in front of every speed bump. But the feeling of her tight knock down is stronger here. Although in the cold car in motion something was tapping on the bumps in front. No way ?

And one more reason to be happy: our car has decent wiper blades! This is from the category of fantasy. We did not leave the city, and I cannot say how the wipers work at a speed of under one hundred kilometers per hour. But in city mode, they coped well with snow and water, which even more expensive brands cannot always boast of.


Based on the foregoing, I quite agree that SW Cross looks quite harmonious on our roads. High ground clearance, good handling, visibility, landing - all this the station wagon has. And some even better than the sedan. But still…

Loyalty to tradition

Everything seems to be fine, but the protruding edge of the arch lining is a symbolic thing. A dealer who has not worked very well, forcing him to switch to another dealer, is also very in our opinion. The algorithm of the AMT, which has not yet been brought to mind, is our everything, almost like Pushkin. But how wonderful it would be if you take and abandon these traditions, isn't it?


To tell the truth, I also wanted to add here not very pleasant tactile sensations from the plastic in the cabin and - what is much more important - from the steering wheel, but I will not. And the reason is clear: Vesta's materials are approximately at the level of Solaris materials. They don't need to be good, they need to be not too expensive and competitive.


Okay, then let's look at the price. The most inexpensive version with a 1.6 liter engine (106 hp) and a five-speed manual gearbox will cost 755,900 rubles. The most expensive, with a 1.8 liter engine (122 hp) and AMT - at 847,900 rubles. Well, the same Solaris on the "handle" with a 1.6 liter engine starts at 754,900 rubles. And in the top-of-the-line Elegance (with automatic transmission) it costs 929,900 rubles ... And this is not a station wagon, and not a cross.


So I have to once again come to the conclusion that we have nothing cheaper. Well, then, is there any point in complaining about unpleasant plastic? Probably not either. If not for these traditions ...
