Faults and engine repair G4KD / 4B11 2.0 l.

The G4KD / 4B11 engine is part of the Theta II family, according to Mitsubishi it is 4B1 (where 4B11 is the heir to the well-known), which replaced the old motors of the series. Also, these engines were installed on Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge, on these cars they are called Chrysler world. The engine is an upgraded Magentis G4KA (Theta) engine, in which the intake receiver was changed, the ShPG was changed, the CVVT variable valve timing system was modified, the phase shifters are now on both shafts, the exhaust manifold is changed, hinged, different firmware, in general, the motor has changed significantly and became more powerful - 163 hp, in Russia the engine is strangled to 150 hp, in order to optimize the tax payments of the owners. The engine, with the recommended 95 gasoline, also digests the 92nd, although there are no hydraulic lifters, therefore, every 90 thousand km, in the presence of characteristic noises, it is necessary to adjust the valve clearances.
Now about the faults and shortcomings.
1. Diesel before warming up is a common thing for G4KD 4B11, we will attribute it to engine features.
2. Whistling air conditioner compressor bearing, change and no problem.
3. Chirping, this sound is present on all G4KD 4B11s and makes the owners nervous, take it easy, this is the work of the injectors.
4. Vibrations at 1000-1200 rpm, change the candles, drive on.
Among other things, there are various hissing sounds, they are emitted by the gas pump. The motor itself is not the quietest, be prepared for the sounds, but in general it is not bad, high-torque and performs its function quite well. It is also worth monitoring the condition of the catalyst and you need to have time to replace or cut it out in time, otherwise its dust will get into the cylinders and scuffs will form there. Usually its service life is about 100-150 thousand km.
On the basis of this motor, an engine was created , with a working volume of 2.4 liters. In addition, a turbo version of the 4B11T was created on the basis of 4B11, for the sports Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart.

Chip tuning for your G4KD / 4B11

All owners have known for a long time that the engine was originally 165 strong and it develops just such power throughout the world, in Russia the power is artificially reduced to 150 hp. without interfering with the hardware, so we go to the tuners, we take the 165 hp firmware. and restore justice))
In addition, all owners are aware of the fact that there are turbo versions of this engine and people itch their hands to install a boost for themselves, but the T-GDI engine is seriously different from the simple G4KD, by the presence of direct fuel injection, ShPG, which in design resembles a piston from the Lancer Evolution X and a number of other changes. You can build a G4KD 4B11 on a TD04 turbine, but the cost of reworking the engine, suspension, brakes, etc. will be very high.

Since 1992, four generations of KIA Sportage have been produced with diesel and gasoline engines, mono- and all-wheel drive. KIA Sportage became truly competitive in the compact crossover segment in 2004, after the presentation of the second generation, built on the same platform as the Hyundai-Kia J3. Less common in Russia are versions of the first generation, which were assembled at a plant in Kaliningrad.

KIA Sportage engine

First generation

The first generation KIA Sportage was produced from 1993 to 2006. It was completed with five different gasoline and diesel engines. The volume was usually 2.0 liters, and the power ranged from 63 to 128 horsepower. Although the line of KIA Sportage engines also includes a 2.2-liter diesel engine borrowed from Mazda.

In Russia, the most common are four-cylinder power units, producing 118 or 128 liters. with. The KIA Sportage engine is paired with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. Average fuel consumption per 100 km varies from 8 to 14 liters.

Versions developed for the domestic market are not particularly picky about fuel quality. The oil, according to the manufacturer's instructions, needs to be changed every 12 thousand km. But with constant operation in urban conditions, it is desirable to reduce the service interval to 8-10 thousand km. To avoid overheating, you should take care of replacing antifreeze every 50 thousand km, as well as prophylactically flushing the radiators.

Owners of the 1st generation KIA Sportage rarely complain about the engine. The main claims are related to body corrosion, poor sound insulation, noisy handouts, weak stabilizer bushings. Most of the breakdowns are associated with the advanced age of the crossover. The power units are reliable and unpretentious, although the KIA Sportage diesel can cause problems when using low-quality diesel fuel. In it, the ECU of the fuel pump often fails, the cylinder head and the crank mechanism are critically worn out, there are problems with starting on a cold one.

If you are the owner of the 1st generation diesel Sportage, use to increase the resource of the power unit and fuel system. The additive will increase the cetane index by 3-5 units, reduce consumption by 10-15%, reduce engine wear under load, and protect fuel injectors. It removes water from diesel fuel, thereby facilitating cold start at subzero temperatures.

Second and third generation

The second generation crossover was produced from 2004 to 2010. It was no longer built on a ladder-type frame, so it became less adapted to off-road conditions. KIA Sportage II generation was equipped with gasoline engines from 2.0 to 2.7 liters.

In 2010, the second generation was replaced by the third. The crossover was equipped with front or all-wheel drive, a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.

For the KIA Sportage of the second and third generations, the following power plants were used:

1) D4EA- 1991 cc turbocharged four-cylinder engine see Power is 113 liters. with. With solid mileage in the 2.0 CRDi engine, the compression gradually decreases. This negatively affects fuel consumption, power, there are problems with starting the engine on a cold one. Over time, the EGR system gets clogged, due to wear of the turbine and the CPG, oil particles and soot get into the exhaust, which leads to a deterioration in traction. Serious problems in the KIA Sportage with a D4EA engine appear with runs over 200 thousand km.

2) G4GC- a two-liter gasoline engine with a cast iron cylinder block, which was widely used for cars sold on the Russian market. This is a conventional aspirated engine with a capacity of 143 liters. with. The oil volume in the lubrication system is 4 liters.

The resource, with proper maintenance and normal operation, exceeds 300 thousand km. This KIA Sportage Beta II series engine is equipped with a CVVT system, but does not have hydraulic lifters. Therefore, it may be necessary to adjust the valve clearances when the mileage is less than 100 thousand km. It is important to change the belt in a timely manner. This should be done every 60 thousand km, because when it breaks, the valve bends.

Among the disadvantages of the G4GC are high noise levels, increased vibrations, and characteristic jerks during acceleration. Sometimes the revolutions freeze, the ECU is reflashed to fix the problem.

3) G4KD- a two-liter gasoline engine KIA Sportage with an aluminum block of cylinders. The power is 150 hp. with. In Russian conditions, its resource reaches 250 thousand km. On a cold engine "diesel", a characteristic chirp comes from the injectors. In general, the engine is unpretentious and reliable. The design disadvantages include insufficient cooling of the pistons, which leads to seizure, pistons and fingers knocking in the skirts.

4) G4KE- a 2.4-liter KIA Sportage gasoline engine that produces 175 liters. with. power. The lubrication system holds 4.6 liters of oil. This is a Mitsubishi 4B12 powertrain prototype with an aluminum cylinder block. The advantages of the G4KE include a proven design, a good margin of power and strength.

5) 2.0 CRDi- used on KIA Sportage III generation, produces 136 or 184 liters. with. Equipped with direct injection system. Pleases with low fuel consumption. With solid mileage, controllers, sensors, and the fuel system cause problems.

Fourth generation

The new KIA Sportage has been in production since 2016. Equipped with 3 petrol and 3 diesel engines. Among them are improved units from previous generations. For example, the same G4KE with 185 hp. with. The Korean manufacturer did not refuse from the 1.7 CRDi with a capacity of 115 liters. with. This is a record holder in terms of efficiency: it consumes up to 5 liters per 100 km of track in a combined cycle.

G4FD - 1.6 GDi appeared in the line of motors. The gasoline engine of the Gamma line can be paired with a mechanic or automatic. Thanks to direct fuel injection, it is possible to achieve better responsiveness at low revs. And increased compression and optimization of gear ratios in the box had a positive effect on gas mileage.

How to increase the resource of the KIA Sportage engine?

To extend the life of the KIA Sportage power unit, you need to adhere to only two rules: to operate the car correctly and carry out competent maintenance, reducing the frequency of oil changes to 7-10 thousand km. The increase in the resource is facilitated by the RVS-Master additive for the engine and the preventive additive, which is carried out with the MF5 composition. Let's take a look at the features of these products separately.

ICE additive- repair and restoration composition, which restores coupled friction pairs from ferrous metals by building up a dense layer of cermets. The finely dispersed composition is not a classical oil additive, since it does not affect its physicochemical properties.

Thanks to the processing of G4GC with a cast iron cylinder block, it is possible to achieve an increase in compression, a decrease in oil and fuel consumption, an increase in engine life, a decrease in the amount of noise and vibration. The friction geomodifier forms a cermet layer on ferrous metal surfaces that is resistant to corrosion, oxidation, wear, and it simply cleans aluminum parts from carbon deposits and impurities. The effectiveness of CIP impact on KIA Sportage may differ depending on the design and technical condition of the motor. It is appropriate to combine treatment with an additive with routine maintenance - changing the engine oil and other consumables.

MF5- additive for flushing the oil system, which is used to clean working surfaces from carbon deposits and wear products. The composition is safe for seals, gaskets. The frequency of its use depends on the nature of the operation of the KIA Sportage. An additive is indispensable when you switch to a new oil, find a foreign substance in a drained working fluid, or purchase a used car, but are not sure about the quality of its service. MF5 additive is useful for routine maintenance because it has a complex effect:

  • Repairs damaged cylinders.
  • Utilizes metal oxides.
  • Restores the elasticity of the seals.
  • Forms a cermet layer on work surfaces.

MF5 should be applied before changing the oil. Please note, unlike the RVS-Master, flushing will not help if the motor is troit, compression has dropped, there is wear on the friction surfaces. In such cases, it is necessary to fully diagnose and restore the power unit.

Drive, automatic transmission and manual transmission KIA Sportage

The mechanics of KIA Sportage of all generations are very reliable. On vehicles that are operated in difficult conditions, at high loads, a characteristic howl, noise, hum is manifested. This is often due to gear wear. To restore them, an additive or is suitable. But it must be used before debris and shavings enter the lubrication system. This will avoid major overhauls, extend the transmission life, make shifting smoother and easier, and eliminate the unpleasant crunch and knock.

Similar additives are used to treat the axle, transfer case, to eliminate howl, hum, and improve the functioning of the all-wheel drive. Most of the 4WD KIA Sportage breakdowns are associated with overheating of the clutch, oil leaks, pump breakdown, the filters of which are clogged with dirt. Therefore, the owners of the crossover need to closely monitor the oil level and the tightness of the system, prophylactically add an additive for the transfer case and axle to the oil.

As for the automatic transmission, its breakdowns are manifested by jolts and kicks, slipping when switching. As practice shows, this can happen with any mileage, which will lead to the need for expensive repairs or a complete replacement of the box. For restoration and CIP, we recommend. The additive compensates for wear on bearings, gears and other parts, making shifting easy and smooth. It will be useful for any of the automatic transmissions: RE4R01A, F4A42, F4A51, A6GF1.

This engine was installed on both the Kia Sportage 3 and the fourth generation. They were equipped with manual transmission and automatic transmission. It was used in the entry and middle trim levels. This is the most common Sportage engine in our country.

The power of the 2.0 engine is 150 hp, the torque is 191 Nm. This is a four-cylinder, gasoline unit with 16 valves and a variable valve timing system on both shafts. The fuel supply system to the cylinders is implemented according to the MPI or distributed injection principle, which gives the engine the following advantages:

  • simplicity of design
  • high maintainability
  • low cost of spare parts and repairs
  • the ability to fill in 92nd gasoline

Motor of the new Kia Sportage 2017 2.0 MPI DOHC 16V gasoline

It is the 2.0 gasoline engine that is considered the most problem-free and inexpensive to maintain among the Sportage engines, not only of the third and fourth generations, but also of the second generation. Unfortunately, it also has disadvantages:

  • Relatively low power, in comparison with other power units of this model;
  • Quite narrow torque shelf, maximum - at 4700 rpm;
  • Relatively high fuel consumption, in a Sportage with such an engine, it is 8.5 liters in the combined cycle;
    • 2.0 engines rarely cause trouble for car owners with them. Among the malfunctions, mainly trifles, floating revs and knocking on a cold one. They are usually eliminated by replacing candles, a fuel filter, adjusting valves. In general, the modification of the Kia Sportage with a 2.0 engine and a manual transmission can be considered the most reliable and unpretentious in the lineup.

      1.6 T-GDI engine

The 1.6 turbo engine is perhaps the most interesting of the power units of the Kia Sportage. The company's engineers used modern solutions in it, which made it possible to obtain high power and torque in a wide range of revolutions while reducing fuel consumption. This was made possible thanks to the technology of direct fuel injection into the GDI cylinders, the use of a turbocharger and a variable valve timing system. As a result, the power of such a motor was 177 hp. at 5000 rpm, and a torque of 265 Nm in a wide range from 1500 to 4500 rpm. Cars with such an engine are equipped with a DCT robot and therefore you don't have to think about the fact that you have a gearbox at all, just step on the gas and the car accelerates from almost any speed.

Naturally, the T-GDI motor also has disadvantages. They are associated with the complexity of the design, the presence of a turbine and equipment for supplying fuel to the cylinders. The supercharger can hardly be called durable, except for it the high pressure fuel pump may fail. Thus, a more or less serious repair of such a unit will require significant costs and appropriate qualifications of service personnel.

The reason for problems with the fuel system of this engine is often the use of low-quality gasoline. Although the engine is adapted to the use of 92 gasoline, this is not recommended, the GDI technology in Korean cars requires the use of high-quality fuels and lubricants and fuel.

If you look at the reliability of the unit as a whole, then there are no questions to it, provided timely maintenance, the use of high-quality engine oil and normal will be able to easily depart much longer than its warranty period.

The Sportage is an iconic model for Kia. This name has existed for a quarter of a century, and the car itself has been replaced by 4 generations.

1st generation Sportage engines

ATTENTION! Found a completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption! Don't believe me? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also did not believe until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

Kia Sportage debuted in 1993. This is the first and only time that a Sportage has had multiple body options. In addition to the standard five-door version, an open-top three-door and a car with an extended rear overhang (Sportage Grand) were offered.

The Korean manufacturer created its first SUV based on a Mazda car. The Sportage uses a frame structure. Most of the time, the SUV is rear-wheel drive, the front end is rigidly connected.

Engines also passed from the Japanese. Under the hood of the Sportage, one could find a two-liter gasoline engine in three different versions and two diesel engines: 2.0 and 2.2 liters.

FE

Kia began producing internal combustion engines of the FE series under license from Mazda in 1992. It is a four-cylinder naturally aspirated unit with a cast iron block and an aluminum cylinder head. Before installing it in the Sportage, the motor was slightly modified, in particular, the intake receiver was changed, a different camshaft was installed and the compression ratio was reduced.

There were two versions: with an 8- and 16-valve block head. The first ones could be found only on cars assembled in Korea before 1999. This engine develops only 95 horsepower compared to the 118 horsepower of the 16-valve. In addition, it has a record low compression ratio of 8.6.

Starting in 1995, FE-DOHC twin camshaft engines appeared under the hood. Bore and stroke were left unchanged.

R2 and RF

The first generation Sportage was equipped with two diesel engines. One of them is the 2.2-liter R2 naturally aspirated. It produces only 63 horsepower and 127 Nm of torque. This power unit could earlier be found on the Mazda Bongo minibus. It was installed on the Sportage until 2002.

The second engine is a diesel modification of the FE series unit. The block itself has not undergone any changes, but the cylinder head is completely different. Already the Korean designers themselves added a turbine to it, thanks to which the power increased to 83 horses. In terms of reliability, this engine is less preferable than gasoline ones. The diesel engine operates under a higher load, plus everything has a more complex design (pre-chamber ignition, turbine, intercooler).

Generation II Sportage engines

In 2004, a generational change took place. And at the same time, the very concept of the car has changed. Sportage has ceased to be a frame SUV, moving into the crossover class. It is based on a new load-bearing body and Elantra platform.

G4GC

The most common engine on the second generation Sportage was the two-liter petrol "four". This is a simple and unpretentious unit. Cast iron block, aluminum cylinder head. The timing belt has a belt that must be changed every 50-70 thousand in order to avoid breakage and damage to the valves on the cylinders. One phase shifter is installed in the head, which changes the phase angles of the intake valves.
But due to the lack of hydraulic lifters, valve clearances need to be adjusted every 90 thousand km.

D4EA

There are two modifications of the D4EA motor. They differ only in the turbine and attachments. The younger version uses WGT supercharging and produces 112 horsepower. A more powerful modification uses a VGT turbine and another high-performance injection pump. The engine is considered quite reliable, but expensive components and the considerable age of cars make the purchase of second-generation diesel Sportage a risky business.

G6BA

The top-of-the-line Sportage engine of the second generation is a 2.7-liter V6. This engine could be obtained only in a complete set with a 4-speed "automatic" and all-wheel drive. Its features include an aluminum block and cylinder head and a small piston stroke. Hydraulic lifters are installed, but there is no phase change system.
It is advisable to change the timing belt in advance; if it breaks, the pistons bend the valves.

Generation III Sportage engines

The third generation was released in 2010. The crossover received a bright and dynamic design, in which there was not a hint of the calm appearance of its predecessors. Like the Sportage 2, the new car had front-wheel drive as standard. All-wheel drive is available for a surcharge, but its task is not to increase cross-country ability, nevertheless, the crossover has become purely asphalt, but to make behavior on slippery types of surfaces more confident.

G4KD

G4KD is a two-liter gasoline engine. Met on the Sportage most often and was the only gasoline engine in the lineup. There were frequent complaints about this motor related to noisy work. Diesel sound on a cold engine indicates a scuffing on the cylinder walls. Chirping is a feature of the nozzles.

After restyling in 2014, the G4NU engine began to be installed instead of the G4KD engine. It differs in block geometry and timing drive.

D4FD

The 1.7 liter diesel is the D4FD engine, which was introduced only in 2010. This is the largest engine in the new U series of Hyundai units. It is equipped with a timing chain drive, two camshafts, each of which has a phase regulator. In addition, a variable geometry VGT turbine is installed.

There are two versions of this engine. On the Sportage, only the least powerful is used with a return of 115 horses. This motor is sensitive to fuel quality. Low-grade diesel fuel quickly destroys the injectors, which makes the engine uneven.
If the draft has disappeared and jerks have appeared, then most likely the fine or coarse filters are clogged.

D4HA

The diesel two-liter engine appeared in 2009. Unlike the 1.7 liter engine, its block is cast from aluminum, not cast iron. The timing chain uses a chain. Hydraulic lifters independently adjust valve clearances. The turbocharging system uses a variable geometry turbine. Just like the younger D4HA diesel engine, it is demanding on fuel quality. In addition, when driving dynamically at high speeds, a small oil consumption appears, it is advisable to monitor its level.

The D4HA engine has two versions: standard and forced up to 184 horses. Both can be found under the hood of the Sportage.

IV generation Sportage engines

The fourth generation of the Kia Sportage arrived in Russia in 2016, six months after the official premiere in Frankfurt. Technically, the car has not changed much, the crossover is built on a modified platform of its predecessor and inherited the engines from it. For example, the diesel engine migrated from under the hood of the Sportage 3 without any changes at all.

G4NA

The base engine for the Sportage is still a 2-liter inline four-cylinder four. The new unit received the designation G4NA, it belongs to the Nu family, which was presented in 2010. Following modern trends, the designers preferred the aluminum block and the cylinder head. Phase shifters are installed on both camshafts for better filling of the cylinders at different speeds.
Hydraulic lifters are also provided, they will save you from manual valve adjustment every 90 thousand km. The timing chain uses a chain.

G4FJ

The only truly new unit is the petrol turbo four. Fashionable downsizing has reached the Kia crossover. This 1.6-liter engine produces 177 horsepower, which is 27 horsepower more than its two-liter petrol counterpart. In addition to the turbine, they are distinguished by the fuel supply system. Direct injection is used on the G4FJ. The CVVT phase control system is available on both the intake and exhaust shafts.
Hydraulic lifters are not provided, it is necessary to manually adjust the valves every 90 thousand km. Timing chain drive. From the factory, there are three versions with different capacities: 177, 186 and 204 horsepower.

Much of the credit for the improved dynamics goes to the new robotic dual-clutch transmission. Only paired with it and all-wheel drive is a turbocharged engine available.

The example of the Kia Sportage clearly shows how the development of engines is taking place. From unpretentious units of a simple design, which gave out little power and consumed a lot of fuel, evolution gradually comes to more efficient and complex internal combustion engines with a smaller resource.

The heads of the two largest automobile concerns Skoda and Volkswagen announced that the Russian dealers of the brand are getting updated models of Rapid, Karoq and Jetta, which have been significantly modernized from a technical point of view.

According to the developers, the updated cars can compete with the models that are currently the bestsellers of the Russian market.

The Karoq crossover is developed on the MQB platform. The standard equipment of the car includes: alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a multifunctional center armrest.

A 1.4-liter power unit with a capacity of 150 horsepower is installed under the hood. It is paired with an automatic transmission. The basic version is equipped with front-wheel drive, and in the top-end configuration, all-wheel drive is available for buyers.

The updated Rapid has received significant changes in the exterior and interior. Manufacturers are confident that the updated model will be able to become one of the most popular in the Russian market. The car is equipped with a 1.6-liter unit with a capacity of 90 and 110 horsepower, respectively. They are paired with a manual or automatic transmission and a front-wheel drive system.

The main changes in the exterior and interior include: a modernized rear bumper, modified head optics, increased ground clearance, door sills, an advanced multimedia system with a large digital screen, new interior trim material and luggage compartment lighting.

The German Jetta sedan has also received updates and is ready to compete in the Russian market. The production of the car in an updated version, established in the Mexican city of Puebla. The modern exterior and interior design is reminiscent of the Korean competitors that were introduced earlier.
