Drive shafts have been used in agricultural technology for power transmission for many decades. If you look at the protective and shaped pipes, then they have hardly changed much during this time.

Four filigree needle bearings work with increasing loads here, and the need to transfer the load at an angle further reduces their chances of survival. An extreme case - serious damage hinge forks. Obviously, this will require replacing them. However, the most unpleasant thing here is that it is not immediately possible to recognize such damage. Suspecting nothing, the mechanic installs a new cross, but it quickly fails. This is explained by the fact that:

  • or the hinge fork is bent,
  • or the bearing seat is knocked out,
  • or the bearing seat is cracked.

Therefore, before installing a new crosspiece, carefully inspect the universal joint forks. It is very difficult to detect fork deformation with the naked eye, so the parallelism of the fork cheeks should be measured with a caliper. To determine the deformation of the fork, measure it in two planes. Damaged plugs must be replaced!

Removing the outer circlips

In small crosspieces, the bearing shells are fixed from the outside with retaining (thrust) rings. To dismantle them without unnecessary problems, you must do the following:

  • Clean thoroughly around the ring with a scraper.
  • Place a rod on the bearing shell and hit it hard once to dislodge the ring.
  • Remove the ring using suitable pliers. Tip: be sure to hold the ring with your finger so it doesn't bounce to the side!

Removing the inner circlips

Despite the fact that these rings are buried and it is not so easy to get to them, their dismantling and subsequent installation are not the most difficult operations. They are usually quite easy to work with as their seats do not corrode and remain well oiled. To remove these rings from their seats, you do not need special pliers, but just a small screwdriver. Reverse mounting is just as easy.

Knocking out bearing bushings

There are several ways to do this, some of them are quite complicated. So, the fork can be clamped at an angle in a vice and push out the sleeve using the end head fixed in the same place. We find this method more elegant: take the outer hinge fork (the one that is closer to the tractor) and place the shaft with the other end on the edge of the workbench (the bearing bushings of the inner fork should be vertical). If you now knock on the inner fork with a hammer, you will notice how the top bushing gradually comes out of its socket with each blow.

Complete dismantling of bearing bushings

To speed up dismantling, the fork with the half knocked out bushing should be clamped vertically in a vise. Now, using the pry bar as a lever and resting it on the lips of a vise, raise the fork. After one bearing sleeve has been removed, the forks can be disconnected.

Removing the crosspiece from the outer fork

Clamp the outer fork in a vise so that the transverse cross with fork cheeks rests on the lips of the vise. If you now hit the fork with a hammer, the upper bearing sleeve will begin to pop out of its seat. The opposite sleeve is knocked out in the same way or with a rod.

Bearing reuse?

If for any reason you need to disassemble an undamaged universal joint with working bearings and then reinstall them, pay attention to the following nuance: before starting dismantling, take a grease gun and fill the bearings abundantly with grease. This will keep the needle rollers in place and will not fall out of the bushings.

Installation of a new crosspiece

Mounting bearing bushings

Remove the bearing bushings from the cross and fill them with grease. This will almost certainly prevent the rollers from misaligning during installation. Now press one bushing into the inner yoke of the universal joint - but so that it fits into its seat about three-quarters of the way!

The opposite bearing sleeve is also inserted using a vise. Take your time so that excess grease can drain out through the threaded hole of the grease nipple.

Lapping bushings with a hammer

In order for the bearing bushings to be at the required height and there were no problems with the subsequent installation of the retaining rings, the inner surfaces of the cheeks of the fork clamped in a vice should be tapped with a hammer.

Pressing in with a nut

If the bearing bushings are not fully seated in their seats, place the nut between the bushing and the vise lip and gently tighten the bushing again. Repeat this procedure for all bushings and screw in the grease nipple.

Everything worked out? Check the ease of movement!

After completing the installation, check the ease of movement of the universal joint. Take the shaft in your hands so that the hinge hangs freely. Now turn the shaft and observe the joint. Is it really moving completely freely, or is it squeezed at some point? If the latter, then you need to take a hammer and gently tap both cheeks of each fork.

This removes the pinching and makes the bearings easier to move. If one of the hinges is still pinched, this most likely indicates a deformation of the cheek. And here there is no longer any salvation - the hinge has served its purpose!
