Having spun off the premium brand Genesis from the parent brand Hyundai, the Koreans have never hidden their strategy of expanding into global markets. Korea first, then the United States and the Middle East, and the next foothold is Russia! Back in the days of the Moscow Motor Show, I was able to photograph the flagship Genesis G90 sedan with Russian numbers in the parking lot of the Crocus Expo exhibition center, in which the company's management arrived at the premiere of Crete. And now the official presentation of the Genesis brand in Russia has taken place.

With cars of the new brand, readers of Autoreview, so now the strategy of their promotion in Russia is the most interesting. Cars for our market will be assembled from SKDs at the Avtotor Kaliningrad plant. The first to be released is the Genesis G90 executive sedan, which replaced the well-known model in our country Hyundai equus... Sales will begin in October and will be handled by carefully selected Hyundai dealerships: according to preliminary data, there will be about thirty of them. The creation of separate show rooms is still only in the distant plans.

The complete sets are already known, and they are specific for Russia. For example, only cars with four-wheel drive HTRAC. The base version will be the Premier version with a V6 3.8 engine (309 hp), nine airbags, bi-xenon headlights, adaptive suspension, leather interior, heated and electrically adjustable rear sofa, a navigator, a rear-view camera, door closers and a Lexicon audio system.

The Elite trims include adaptive LED headlights, surround-view cameras, a head-up display and a second-row entertainment system. Moreover, such a car can be bought both with the aforementioned 3.8 aspirated engine, and with the latest V6 3.3 T-GDI biturbo engine with a capacity of 370 hp. The same engine, along with the flagship "eight" 5.0 (413 hp), will be available in the richest Royal configuration with separate second-row seats, auto-braking and lane control systems.

Electronic assistants for a separate fee can be installed on the first two versions. And at the top of the range - a modification lengthened by 290 mm, which the Koreans call "limousine". But, strictly speaking, a car without a partition between the rows is just an elongated sedan. However, this is unlikely to stop buyers: the long-wheelbase version of the Ekus in previous years accounted for up to 10% of sales, although in 2015 there were only six buyers.

Pricing for the G90 will be announced at the same time as sales begin. Don't expect cheap premium sedans, however. Most likely, compared to the Hyundai Equus model (from 3.4 million rubles), prices will rise by about a third. This means that you need to navigate around 4.5 million! Although it is still cheaper than the Mercedes S-class, which now costs from 5.9 million rubles.

What's next? A business sedan, that is, a restyled Hyundai Genesis with an expanded set of equipment, will appear with us in early 2017. A year later, a Genesis G70 sedan the size of a BMW three-ruble note will arrive in Russia - it was shown at the last auto show in New York. And then, in full accordance with the global, a large and compact crossovers plus a two-door that replaces the discontinued Hyundai Genesis Coupe. But these models do not even have names yet, and their market launch is scheduled for the end of the decade.

The Hyundai brand was not even mentioned that evening - the official Russian presentation of the Genesis brand took place in Barvikha in a chamber, solid manner and without any references to the name of the parent company. Koreans distance themselves from their mainstream brands in every possible way and assure that Genesis is something truly new and completely unique.

Why do you need a new brand

The Koreans made their first attempt to enter the high-end car market in 1999, when they introduced the Equus front-wheel-drive sedan (Centennial in Europe) with a length of 5.1 m with V6 and V8 engines. The car was created in collaboration with Mitsubishi and was positioned in the domestic market as a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz S-class and BMW seven. However, it was only ten years later that it was possible to truly enter the prestigious segment with a second-generation rear-wheel drive model of its own design. Even then, in some markets, Koreans began selling a sedan under the Equus brand without mentioning Hyundai. Almost at the same time, the rear-wheel drive business sedan Hyundai Genesis entered the market, which was supposed to give battle already Mercedes-Benz E-class and BMW 5-Series. In 2013, Genesis changed a generation, and soon it was decided to finally separate the luxury models into a separate brand, so as not to confuse customers with the mention of the mass brand Hyundai. Instead of Equus, the Koreans chose the more sonorous Genesis as the brand name, and the models themselves were given alphanumeric indexes in the manner of Infiniti cars. In the fall of 2015, Genesis Motors was spun off from Hyundai Motors.

Who is responsible for the styling and development of the vehicles

In January 2016, the American Manfred Fitzgerald, the former director of design and development for the Lamborghini brand, became the head of the Genesis brand. As Senior Vice President, he is responsible for the design and implementation of brand strategy and marketing policy.

The stylist of the brand is the famous Dutchman Luc Donckerwolke, who has been the chief designer of various branches of the Volkswagen group for many years in a row. He worked on looks Skoda Octavia and Fabia of the first generations, and also painted the current Seat Ibiza. He also had a hand in the style of almost all Lamborghini models from Diablo to Murcielago and Gallardo, drew Bentley Flying Spur and Bentayga. Since the beginning of 2016, Donckerwolke has been working in the same team with Hyundai-Kia Chief Designer Peter Schreier.

Finally, the technical part is in charge of the German Albert Biermann, who has been head of the Hyundai Motor Group's High Performance Vehicle Test and Development Department since spring 2015. Previously, the specialist was Vice President of BMW M and BMW Individual, where he was mainly involved in the development of sports models.

What models will be produced under the Genesis brand

The first Genesis car and the brand's flagship officially became the G90 sedan - in fact, the third generation Equus, the world premiere of which took place in Detroit in January, and the Russian one - on September 22 in Barvikha. Next, the business sedan G80 will enter our market - the successor to the Hyundai Genesis, which has already been shown at the auto show in Busan, South Korea. Next year, the Koreans will unveil the G70 sports sedan, which will enter the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3-Series segments. Finally, by 2020, under the Genesis brand will be presented two crossovers and a sports coupe - a total of six models with rear-wheel drive architecture and V-engines, or compact turbo engines.

Will the flagship G90 be able to compete with German sedans?

In addition to the dimensions and space in the cabin, the flagship sedan has a completely modern chassis, a lot of service electronics and electric drives for everything and everyone. The media system is controlled by a puck on the tunnel; there are two sites for wireless charging of phones nearby. Behind there are individual monitors and control panels for the media system and air conditioning system. Finally, instead of a solid rear sofa, you can order a version with separate armchairs.

Two engines will be offered. First, the new V6 3.3 T-GDI turbo engine with 370 Horse power... Secondly, a 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 with 425 hp, which will serve as the flagship. Drive - rear or full. But the G90 will not have air suspension even for a surcharge. The Koreans assure that the rejection of pneumatic elements is due to considerations of reliability and the desire to keep prices.

Will there be extended versions

As with the Equus, the G90 comes in a long wheelbase with a 290mm insert. According to statistics, in Russia up to 3% of the sold Equus sedans were sold in long wheelbase versions, so the long G90 will also be brought to us. At the same time, the Korean Pullman will be offered only in the maximum configuration and only with a five-liter V8 engine, all-wheel drive transmission and separate rear seats with electric adjustments and ottomans - retractable footrests.

What is known about the sedan G80

The new business sedan is the fruit of a thorough reworking of the second generation Hyundai Genesis, which received a more aggressive design and a retuned suspension. The sedan is equipped with a 3.8-liter gasoline engine V6. Engine power is 315 horsepower. In addition, the novelty will be offered in a "charged" Sport modification. This version was equipped with a 3.3-liter biturbo engine. The engine power is 370 hp. and 510 Nm of torque. Drive - rear, or full, transmission - eight-speed "automatic". Finally, customers will be offered an adaptive suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers.

What is known about the sedan G70

What the production G70 will look like is hinted at by the New York Concept prototype unveiled at the New York Auto Show. The exterior of the model is made in the style of last year's Vision G prototype and in many respects corresponds to the appearance of the flagship Genesis G90 sedan. The prototype was equipped with a hybrid power plant with a total capacity of 245 hp. with a two-liter turbo engine and an eight-speed "automatic". The production model is likely to receive four-cylinder turbo engines, as well as a "charged" modification, which will be developed by the N Performance division. A distinctive feature of the interior of the prototype was the 21-inch display, which connects the dashboard and the screen of the multimedia system, as well as a touchpad for controlling all on-board electronics.

In the spring of 2014, sales of the new generation of the Hyundai Genesis business-class sedan started in Russia, the world premiere of which took place last fall. The predecessor of "Genesis" did not achieve great success in our country, but, according to the Koreans, the "updated" sedan is ready to make a second attempt, which will most likely be successful.

Of course, the second-generation three-volume car had much more chances, in comparison with its predecessor - a solid appearance "without excesses", very good equipment and the level of its performance ... in addition, its price at the start of sales did not exceed 3 million rubles (that is, it did not fall under the concept of "luxury" and, accordingly, additional taxation did not threaten him) ... only now "the next round of the crisis" spoiled the "atmosphere". Be that as it may - the "second" actually became more successful than the "first", but back to the review of this car ...

The Koreans started the "transformation" of Hyundai Genesis, of course, with their appearance. The novelty received a more status look, created within the framework of the design concept "Flowing Lines 2.0" and which differs from its predecessor in increased dynamism with the simultaneous presence of elegant softness of lines, which gives the exterior of the novelty a peculiar zest.

In terms of dimensions, the new Genesis is almost identical to the first generation car, but the Koreans managed to increase the wheelbase by 75 mm. If we talk about the exact dimensions, the body length of the second generation Genesis is 4990 mm, the wheelbase mentioned above is 3010 mm, the width excluding mirrors fits into the frame of 1890 mm, and the height is limited to 1480 mm. The track widths of the front and rear wheels are 1620 and 1633 mm, respectively.

The curb weight of the novelty ranges from 1965 kg to 2055 kg and depends on the equipment level.

In terms of ground clearance- the car was adapted "for Russian conditions", as a result - the "native ground clearance" of 130 mm remained only for the "Sport" modification, for the rest, the ground clearance height: 155 mm - for the rear-wheel drive version of the sedan, for the all-wheel drive Genesis the ground clearance was "reduced" up to 150 mm.

In the "second" Hyundai Genesis, the Koreans used a much larger amount of high-strength steels in the production of body panels and elements, bringing their share to 51.5% of the total volume of materials. In addition, laser welding and hot stamping are now more commonly used in the assembly process. All this made it possible to significantly increase the rigidity of the body structure, which became 16% stiffer for torsion and 40% for bending.

It is also worth saying that new body Hyundai Genesis is much more aerodynamic than its predecessor. The coefficient of its aerodynamic drag was reduced by Korean engineers to 0.26 Cx, which ultimately contributed to a noticeable decrease in fuel consumption and an increase in the dynamic characteristics of the car.

According to Koreans, the interior of the new Hyundai Genesis is the most spacious in the class. This is especially felt in the back row, where almost the entire height of the wheelbase has been added to the legs. If you add to this the high comfort of the seats, it becomes clear that the new Genesis really seriously expects to compete for a buyer, even with the German giants.

No one should have any complaints about the interior decoration, since the Koreans preferred to use only high-quality materials, including natural leather, wood, aluminum and expensive fabrics.

Some European critics did not like the "horizontal" layout of the front panel (display - climate - multimedia), which was considered too strict in terms of design, but the Koreans explained the choice of such a solution solely by caring for the driver, since the panel embodies part of the new concept of intuitive control (HMI), which also includes a multifunction steering wheel, instrument panel, head-up display and center console.

In general, the salon of the second generation of the Hyundai Genesis sedan has excellent ergonomics, boasts excellent build quality and premium equipment, especially in top-end trim levels.

Genesis is also very good at the trunk, which can hold up to 493 liters of cargo.

In the Russian open spaces, the second generation Hyundai Genesis is offered with two options power plant of the "Lambda" family:

  • As a junior engine, the Koreans offer a V-shaped 6-cylinder gasoline unit with a direct fuel injection system, a variable valve timing system and a 24-valve timing mechanism. The working volume of the younger engine is 3.0 liters (2999 cm³), which makes it possible to develop up to 249 hp. maximum power at 6000 rpm. The peak torque of this power unit falls at around 304 Nm, which is achieved at 5000 rpm.
    As a gearbox, the junior motor receives an uncontested 8-band "automatic", with which the starting acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is 8.6 and 9.0 seconds for front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions, respectively. Maximum speed traffic in both cases is limited to 230 km / h. As for fuel consumption, the front-wheel drive Genesis eats 15.3 liters of AI-95 gasoline within the city, 8.5 liters on the highway and about 11.0 liters in the combined cycle; the all-wheel drive sedan, in turn, consumes 15.6 liters in the city, 9.0 liters on the highway and 11.4 liters in mixed driving mode.
  • The flagship engine also runs on gasoline, has 6 V-cylinders with a displacement of 3.8 liters (3778 cc), is equipped with a 24-valve timing system, variable valve timing and direct fuel injection. Its upper power threshold is indicated by the manufacturer at 315 hp at 6000 rpm, and the peak torque is at around 397 Nm at 5000 rpm.
    The flagship engine is aggregated with the same 8-range automatic transmission, which allows the sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.8 seconds or reach a speed maximum of 240 km / h. As for fuel consumption, the flagship requires 16.2 liters in urban traffic conditions, no more than 8.9 liters during high-speed driving and about 11.6 liters in the combined cycle.

Hyundai Genesis II received front and rear independent multi-link suspension with telescopic shock absorbers and stabilizer lateral stability... In the top-end configuration, the novelty is equipped with an air suspension with electronic control, which allows you to achieve maximum comfort when driving on roads with any surface.

In the "base" Hyundai Genesis receives only rear-wheel drive, but if you wish, you can order the installation of an intelligent all-wheel drive system HTRAC AWD from Magna with a choice of four available operating modes: "Eco", "Normal", "Sport" and "Snow" ...
Also note that the flagship motor is equipped with the HTRAC AWD system by default.

At the heart of the all-wheel drive of the Hyundai Genesis sedan is an electronically-controlled multi-plate interaxle clutch capable of transmitting up to 90% of torque to the front or rear axle, depending on road conditions and the selected operating mode.

The cost of Hyundai Genesis in 2014 starts at 1,859,000 rubles. The most affordable version with all-wheel drive will cost 1,959,000 rubles. The Genesis modification with the flagship engine is estimated at a minimum of 2,869,000 rubles, and the top-end configuration will cost 2,979,000 rubles.

The premiere of Genesis G90 in Russia took place in September 2016. The presentation also revealed the manufacturer's plans to release seven models under the Genesis brand by 2020, including three sedans, two crossovers, a sports coupe and a limousine, which is an extended version of the G90 sedan.

The Genesis G90 is Hyundai's flagship sedan that replaces the Equus in the lineup. The presentation of the car took place in early December two thousand fifteen in the domestic market in South Korea, where this car originally sold under the name EQ 900, and after restyling in November 18, the name "Gee 90" became common to all countries.

Belgian Luc Donckerwolke, who previously headed the design headquarters of the entire Hyundai Motor concern, worked on the appearance of the new Genesis G90 2019 model (photo and price). Initially, the sedan had a hexagonal grille and lights, similar in design to those on. At the same time, the new body of the 2019 Genesis Gee 90 is distinguished by air ducts in the front fenders and wide double-deck taillights, united at the bottom by an overlay for the entire width of the trunk lid, plus wheels with an unusual pattern appeared here.

The interior of the new Genesis G90 sports high-quality materials with wood inlays, rich equipment and comfortable seats. For example, the front ones have 22 power adjustments with memory, and the driver's one is also capable of adapting to the figure of a person sitting in it. The center console houses a 12.3-inch screen of the multimedia system, and two 9.2-inch tablets are available to rear passengers.

In addition, the Genesis G90 car is already equipped with a three-zone climate control system, a wireless charging system for smartphones, as well as double glass windows and an active noise cancellation system. The rear split seats have 14 electrical adjustments, plus a Lexicon audio system, all-round cameras and autonomous highway control are available.

You can recognize the 2019 model year by the slightly modified central airflow deflectors, which additionally received a chrome edging, as well as revised graphics on dashboard, a redesigned air conditioning unit and other stitching on the seats.

Specifications

The new Genesis G90 is based on an elongated platform from the younger G 80 s multi-link suspension in the front and in the back. The manufacturer notes that the specialists of the Hyundai test center at the Nurburgring, as well as employees of the American test site of the brand, were engaged in fine-tuning the chassis of the model.

The overall length of the sedan is 5,205 mm, the wheelbase is 3,160, the width is 1,915, and the height is 1,495. Thus, the car is larger in all directions. Plus there is a version with an increased wheelbase (up to 3450 mm) with a total length from nose to tail of 5495.

As power units for Gee 90 there are three gasoline engine, each of which is combined exclusively in tandem with an eight-band automatic machine. We are talking about two aspirated V6 and V8 with a displacement of 3.8 (315 hp) and 5.0 (425 hp) liters, respectively. Plus the company's first 3.3-liter V6 twin-turbo with 370 horsepower.

With the latest Genesis G90 accelerates from zero to a hundred in 6.2 seconds, and in the version with the top five-liter "eight" - in 5.7 seconds. By default, the sedan comes with rear wheel drive but the H-TRAC all-wheel drive transmission with adaptive suspension is available for a surcharge.

What is the price

The start of sales of the new Genesis G90 in Russia fell on the summer of 2019, we are supplied with cars exclusively with all-wheel drive HTRAC, an eight-band automatic and an adaptive suspension. The price of the base version with a 3.8-liter engine in the Prestige configuration is 4,690,000 rubles.

For a car with a 3.3-liter turbocharged engine, they ask for a minimum of 5,280,000 rubles. - this is available in Prestige, Elite and Royal versions. The cost of modification with a five-liter V8 is 5,650,000 rubles, and the extended Limousine is another 300,000 more expensive.
