In recent years, choosing a car has become a difficult task for motorists, since there are several dozen models on the market that can satisfy the most capricious buyers. And among them are two models that have already managed to show excellent technical characteristics to consumers, this is the Korean Kia Rio and the American Chevrolet Cruze.

These models have not had an eternal dispute since their appearance on the market, since the first car is intended for European motorists, and the second is destined to go to conquer Asia. But the assembly of both Rio and Cruz started from South Korea. And in the segment of comfortable sedans, both models are positioned as contenders. Although Kia is considered a budget option and is much cheaper in cost.

Considering the external parameters, it is difficult to determine which is better than Rio or Cruz, because here whoever likes it. The Chevrolet has a massive, respectable appearance, while the Kia has softer, flowing lines with a pretense of sporty style. For ordinary consumers, Rio looks prettier, resembling an arrow with its outlines. Although in absolute figures, the difference is small - it is only 9 cm longer than the hatchback, and you will have to overpay 10-11 thousand rubles for this. Yes, the separate trunk of the sedan itself is slightly more spacious than that of the hatch, however, due to the much narrower opening and the well-known height restrictions, the car inevitably loses in practicality and ease of loading.

Which configuration?

Basic LS well equipped: an MP3 radio, a pair of power windows, power and heated mirrors, a quartet of airbags and central locking... And heated front seats and air conditioning can be purchased for 6,000 and 27,000 rubles, respectively. It is also worth noting that all "Cruises" with "automatic", as well as the station wagon in the LS version, these last options are set by default.

True, the LS cannot improve ergonomics, safety, or interior trim. Therefore, in our opinion, the optimal option would be "Cruz-LT"... Considering that there is no need to pay extra for the coolness in the cabin, this version is 29,000 rubles more expensive than the base. At the same time, "Chevy" becomes noticeably more comfortable, elegant and richer outside and inside. The door handles and mirrors are body-colored, the radiator grille is chrome-plated, and the fog lights are far from useless. The set of air bags has been expanded with window airbags, while the interior is enlivened by fabric inserts on the dashboard and doors. Which engine?

1st place: 1.6 L (109 HP). Optimal in terms of price and power-to-weight ratio, this motor is in many respects similar to the "Opelev" series "Ecotech-1.6". Such a "Cruz" is lucky enough, even if you go out of town with a full load; and at the same time it is economical (on average 8 liters with manual gearbox, 10 liters with automatic gearbox). True, the engine spins slowly, and it will only allow it to joke if the speed does not drop below the 3500 mark on the tachometer.

2nd place: 1.6 L (124 HP). We marked it with silver only because such an engine can be obtained exclusively with a station wagon. In Europe, however, it is defined as the base for any "Cruise". In fact, this is the same former Ecotech, which was supplemented with a variable valve timing system, increasing power, improving traction in transient modes and making it more economical.

3rd place: 1.8 L (141 HP). Decent power and enviable (if not to abuse high revs) efficiency have long become the hallmark of this engine. He pulls better on medium and high revs and is easier to maintain on the highway cruising 130-140 km / h. However, the optimal version is 37,000 rubles more expensive than the optimum. By the way, even with the "mechanics" the 1.8-liter engine does not endow the "Cruz" with any particularly vigorous acceleration - in the "golf" class there are many fast competitors with more modest engines.

The interior and exterior are, of course, very important, this is what every car owner sees. But, nevertheless, the most important thing, in my opinion, is what is under the hood of the car and, in general, is hidden from view. In general, let's move on to comparing the technical stuffing of both cars.

Despite the fact that so far only one engine is provided for the new Cruise, this engine is very, technically, advanced. The Chevrolet engine has a volume of 1.4 liters (1399 cubic centimeters). This engine is turbocharged and has a capacity of 153 hp. with. at 5600 rpm. But that's not all the know-how of this motor. Its cylinder block is made of aluminum. The fuel system is equipped with direct fuel injection into the cylinders. The engine has a start-stop system, which significantly saves fuel, and a number of systems aimed at reducing friction and increasing engine life. The fuel consumption of the new items, according to the developers' calculations, will be 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers. What can a competitor oppose to this?

For the Kia Rio, the Koreans offer two engines:

Summary

It is very difficult to adequately compare the Chevrolet Cruze and Kia Rio without having traveled on any of them. However, let's try to do this, so to speak, virtually, based on their technical parameters... If you ignore the appearance machines, then, from a technical point of view, for me, the answer to the question is what better Kia Rio or Chevrolet Cruze is unambiguous, it is, of course, the Chevrolet Cruze II. These are more powerful motors, or rather, a motor and a more advanced chassis and, of course, an almost exclusive dashboard.

As for the design, which I deliberately did not evaluate, then before that you need to understand that Cruz 2, unlike the first generation, is no longer a Korean development. Chevrolet Cruze II was developed in the USA and is focused primarily on the market of this country. So, personally, I love the American school of auto design, and in my subjective opinion, Cruz is definitely prettier. As for Rio, this car is kind of impersonal, even despite the well-recognized style of the KIA company. The new Rio turned out to be somehow remnant. But I emphasize, this is my personal opinion, based on my personal taste.

As for the prices for these cars, then, as I wrote above, Cruz 2 is not for sale in Russia, I hope so far. But in the USA, where both cars are sold, the prices for them are approximately the same, somewhere in the region of just over 15,000 dollars.

If in the USA the prices for Rio start at 15,000 dollars, then in Russia the car is much cheaper. Our prices for it start somewhere from 10,000 dollars or 600,000 rubles, then at what rate to count. And this is not surprising, because the Rio is already a Russian car, produced in Russia.

Sales of C-class cars are declining, and not least because the traditional leaders of the segment in recent years have left the market, and the B + class babies have matured and increased in size. Once the most popular class among foreign cars Russian assembly shrank to almost 10% of the market and continues to fall. Unfortunately, the GM corporation left the Russian market under the pretext of lower economic indicators, although the Cruze and Astra were assembled in St. Petersburg and already had a good degree of localization.

The lineup of the Korean division of GM corporation (formerly Daewoo) turned out to be very confusing due to attempts to keep the old design of cheap cars in production. So, Cruze is in fact the successor of the Lacetti model and is known under this name in some markets. We sold them in parallel for a long time, and the Cruze was perceived as a model of a higher class. However, with brands, too, everything is complicated: he and Buick in China, and Daewoo in many Asian countries.

Technique

Cruze is a mass product, it is designed as simply as possible for a car of this class. Suspensions are as budgetary as possible - MacPherson strut in front and a semi-dependent beam in the rear. For the sake of improving characteristics rear suspension up to the level of the multi-link, a very interesting solution was applied - an additional thrust with a Watt mechanism for the perception of lateral forces. The design allows to make the beam significantly softer, increasing comfort and improving the quality of taxiing. And unlike the conventional Panhard rod design, there is no lateral suspension movement during compression.

The motors, again, are the simplest, most reliable and cheapest of all units in the GM range. The 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines are naturally aspirated, long known from European Opel models, and the 1.4 supercharged engine is also from Opel. Gearboxes, as you might guess, are also from GM stocks, M32 and F40 units, familiar to Europeans, are six-speed manual transmissions and 6T30 / 6T40 series “automatic machines” of our own production. Less common are the four-speed Aisin in combination with a 1.6-liter engine. The salon is quite spacious, although it does not match the quality of European models. Big choice additional options, three body options. In general, everything that is supposed to have a budget car of this class. They did not forget about the design - the car looks stylish both inside and out. Yes, and the prices were pleasing - Cruz cost only a little more than a B + class car, but the owner could forever forget about the "feeling of the elbow", about the tightness in the shoulders on rear seats, weak motors and "vegetable" handling. In general, the car has earned its popularity. Let it go easier than the Astra J or Octavia, but the handling is safe and even with a "twinkle". The salon is slightly smaller and simpler than that of the segment leaders, but still it does not suffer from cramped conditions and leaves a positive impression.

Breakdowns and problems in operation

The body of "Kruzikov", like all the latest generations of GM cars, is distinguished by good corrosion resistance. In any case, cars with traces of corrosion still need to be looked for. If any traces are found, it is usually the "sandblasting" area in the front on the threshold or arches, which are almost not protected by plastic from the inside.

The metal of the outer body panels is thin, it is very easy to crumble, and given the "credit" class of the car, many of them have many times repainted doors and fenders due to the peculiarities of Casco insurance in our country. The bumpers are also scratched very easily, the paint on them is not very strong. In general, minor paintwork defects are usually present on cars in abundance, unless the car has been recently painted or serviced oh-oh-very carefully. Crookedly hanging bumpers are often the consequences of not accidents, but simply not very neat parking in drifts - the fastenings are weak, they are easily "pulled". Many people drill out the remnants of plastic rivets of bumper fittings and install more reliable aluminum ones. The salon is doing well, unless, of course, pay attention to the emerging "crickets" and cosmetic defects. Actually, there is almost nothing to break down here due to its simplicity. Only now the materials of the steering wheel and gearshift knob are rather weak, for many they peel off after 50 thousand kilometers, and this is definitely not the consequences of a twisted odometer. Cars with a mileage of more than 150 thousand usually already have a cover on the steering wheel, traces of seat repair, besides, the plastic inserts of the center console are beginning to peel off. On machines with fabric front panel inserts, they already require serious cleaning, leather inserts become less dirty and easier to clean.

It is also worth paying attention to the fact that, due to the peculiarities of the configuration of the center console, alterations of the standard multimedia system are in great demand - advanced versions of the head unit are relatively often installed instead of simpler systems. If you change the oil frequently, at least once every 40 thousand kilometers, and do not get carried away with fast acceleration, then the box can travel 200 and 250 thousand kilometers, but the chances are not very great due to the peculiarities of its design.

But spare parts are relatively inexpensive and the box is very technologically advanced - initial repairs usually do not cost much. It is often recommended to install an enlarged automatic transmission radiator and an external ATF filter. And change your oil more often! Moreover, it is not at all necessary to pour expensive "original" oil if you are confused by the price of 1,600-1,800 rubles per liter. Approximately the same price is for quite "branded" cans of 4.0 liters of class D VI oil from many manufacturers, and the replacement procedure itself will cost a penny. The savings can be significant, because a factory restoration box under the exchange program costs at least 240 thousand rubles, and a new one is even more expensive. There are phase shifters, an oil-antifreeze heat exchanger and a controlled thermostat. Traction is noticeably better, especially for the 1.8 engine, and economy too. The timing belt resource has become higher - now they run 90-120 thousand kilometers with conventional phase control stars, and even more with oval ones. However, it is still better to change the belt every 60 thousand.

In addition to the added elements, something is missing from the design. For example, hydraulic lifters. All the changes together mean that the motor has become insignificantly in operation, but more expensive. And he also has a better attitude to the movement "on cold", which can significantly reduce the resource. For the rest - the same good old motors, only phase shifters can knock. Then you need to clean the "phasic" valves or change the assembled parts themselves. The thermostat can give an error on the heating element - this leads to overheating and detonation. Fortunately, the thermostat usually opens earlier after three years, so it's okay. Well, you also need to remember to adjust the valve clearances every 50-60 thousand kilometers. But the heat exchanger under the exhaust manifold is really an unpleasant thing, it often loses its tightness, especially for those who like to “turn” a cold engine. Further developments follow several scenarios - either the oil gets into the antifreeze, impairing the cooling and soiling the block and radiators, or the antifreeze into the oil, causing problems with the oil pump and liners. But the most unpleasant thing is if the oil spills out, directly onto the hot catalyst, and causes a fire in the engine compartment. Well, or just the car smells strongly of burnt oil, hinting that a fire is near. Sounds so-so? Just remember about this feature of engines and do not try to accelerate and skid cheerfully on a cold engine. And if the heat exchanger leaks when buying - it can be seen from below under the exhaust manifold, then you should know that the motor was not taken care of in winter.
