So, let's take the tests that our magazine conducted in 2016. Who and in what classrooms became the most spacious? The only thing left is to build a rating. But how? After all, if a car beats rivals in terms of headroom, this does not mean at all that it will be the best in the shoulders. I had to invent a new comparison method - we calculate the arithmetic mean value for each car for all measured parameters (if a range is specified, we take into account the maximum value). Of course, in this case, the models with the largest range for adjusting the front seat turn out to be a winner, but this indicator is far from the last, like other parameters, it directly affects the comfort of the driver and passengers. The rating was based on the average value. The result is in the table below.

This year we conducted four large tests, in which all the most anticipated market innovations took part. These are Hyundai Creta, Renault Kaptur and Lada XRAY. You will be surprised, but all of them in terms of space in the cabin lost to the more compact Kia Soul! Moreover, comparing the Soul with other SUVs that have been in our tests before, you can see that the Kia is one of the most spacious crossovers in the overall standings. But it is surprising that it was bypassed by the Chinese Haval H2 and Zotye T600 - they noticeably surpass the "Korean" in size.

But among the most budgetary front-wheel drive pseudo-crossovers, Renault Sandero Stepway can be noted. Look, in most parameters it is slightly inferior to the soplatform Lada Ixrei, but it significantly surpasses it in terms of spaciousness in the shoulders. It is also noteworthy that at the end of the rating there were cars that are more focused on the comfort of front riders. They are spacious enough in the front of the passenger compartment, but they are much more constraining the rear row passengers. In other words, the leaders are the most balanced cars in terms of interior space.

Compact and mid-size crossovers (base version price from 1,000,000 rubles)

Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V claim the title of midsize crossover with the most spacious interior. Their figures are very close, but still Honda was a little more roomy. Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4 go almost neck and neck. Say, in height (H), the championship is behind Mazda, and in terms of space in the legs of the rear passengers (L 2) - for the RAV4.

10th place. Buick LaCrosse V6 2013

In last place, to the great surprise, is the Buick LaCrosse. Traditionally, cars with three shields on the logo differ in their dimensions, both external and internal. This sedan would certainly win if we chose the most stylish and beautiful car, but today we are only looking at the trunk. LaCrosse offers just 376 liters of usable volume. This is slightly less than the sedan, which took the ninth place.

The smoothness and power of the 303-horsepower V6 will appeal to any car enthusiast, while those who drive economically will be pleased with the model with eAssist, which will help reduce fuel consumption. She, however, reduces the volume of the luggage compartment a little more due to the battery.

9th place. Nissan Maxima 2013

The Japanese Nissan Maxima beat the American competitor LaCrosse by a little more than 25 liters. Its trunk volume is 402 liters. In the trunk battle, he beat Buick, but if we talk about passenger space, then here he loses to the American.


The Nissan Maxima is powered by the 290-horsepower VQ V6 engine that Nissan loves. The sedan has a torque of 353 Nm, and the Xtronic continuously variable transmission is responsible for gear changes. An interesting choice for what Nissan themselves call a "four-door sports car."

8th place. Honda Accord LX 2013

Another Japanese man on our list beats Nissan by 45 liters. Honda Accord has a very solid volume of 447 liters of usable space under the boot lid. The figure looks impressive, especially given the fact that the new generation is shorter.


Despite the fact that many sedans are being converted exclusively to 4 cylinders, Honda offers a choice of more capacious powertrains for the Accord. The base is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, which, depending on the model, develops 185 or 189 forces. The torque of this engine is almost independent of power and fluctuates around the mark of 245 Nm. Optionally, there is an atmospheric V6 with a volume of 3.5 liters and a capacity of 278 forces. This unit has more than adequate torque - 341 Nm.

7th place. Hyundai Genesis Sedan 2013

The representative of the South Korean car industry Genesis in the sedan body pushed the mainstream Accord quite a bit, offering the consumer 450 liters. This rear-wheel drive car of the near-luxury class would win among our competitors if we measured the interior - more than 3100 liters of space are available for passengers and the driver in order to get comfortable.


This car differs not only in its dimensions, trunk volume and spacious interior. Of some interest is its engine compartment, which is filled with either a 3.8-liter V6 with 333 horsepower, or a monstrous 5.0-liter V8 with 429 horsepower. Both power units are combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

6th place. Volkswagen Passat 2013

No car rating can do without the Germans. This is not quite the Passat that drives the European autobahns. The Americanized version was able to squeeze out the "bad guy" Hyundai Genesis only due to its more modest dimensions. The volumes of the luggage compartments of these cars are practically the same. But Volkswagen is far less fun to drive because it can't offer the same groovy engine choices as the Korean.


However, even he is able to please practical Americans who have opted for a German sedan, diesel engine... It has a 2.0-liter TDI unit under the hood with 140 horsepower and a monstrous 320 Nm torque for such a modest fellow. The choice of transmissions is also of interest. The diesel engine can be combined with a six-speed mechanical box gear. Many already just because of this will be ready to give first place to Passat.

5th place. Toyota Avalon V6 2013

In the battle of the luggage carriers of the AutoGuide portal, another Japanese Toyota Avalon is ranked 5th. This undoubtedly large, but still midsize sedan has 453 liters of trunk. Along with the Toyota Avalon, the Chrysler 300 catches on with its thoroughbred design. These two are probably the most attractive vehicles in their segment. But they are more similar to the Hyundai Genesis. The same spacious and the same rear-wheel drive. Like the Korean, the American offers a choice of V6 and V8 engines. However, Chrysler's motors are not as powerful as the Korean ones. The base 6-cylinder develops 292 horsepower, and the 8-cylinder HEMI is endowed with 363 horsepower.


As for the luggage compartment of a thoroughbred American, under the rear cover it hides 462 liters of usable space. Unfortunately, he lost a little in the battle for the third position to his compatriot.

But after several years of exploitation, can the challengers threaten the leaders? Let's check it out. Against one of the European favorites, we will put up two intriguing Japanese.

Each of the compared cars has its own peculiarity - a detail that many competitors will envy. Ford Mondeo 4th generation (Mk IV) - a large 4.84-meter car for relatively little money. Prices for pre-owned versions of 2009 with a 2.0-liter petrol engine producing 145 hp. start at 500,000 rubles. Honda Accord VIII attracts attention with its sporty style and excellent driving characteristics. Price tag for a 2009 car with a 2.0 l 156 hp engine. starts at 600,000 rubles. Mazda 6 combines the features of both rivals - it is spacious and has an interesting design. If to all that has been said we add decent reliability, and in the case of the "Japanese" even very decent, it turns out that we are dealing with really interesting cars.

The sedan is the classic image of an elegant car. The most spacious of them is the Ford Mondeo. It is the longest, widest and has the largest trunk with a volume of 535 liters. However, against the background of rivals, the "German" car looks less impressive: massive, clumsy, and on wheels with small disks (for example, 16-inch), it looks terrible at all.

The most stylish, but at the same time the least practical is the Honda Accord. Honda's interior is quite wide, but it lacks room for rear passengers. The trunk volume of 467 liters also does not give much pride.

"Six" is the "golden mean": it, in comparison with Mondeo, is slightly smaller outside and inside, but it looks dynamic, and the trunk can take 519 liters of luggage.

Mazda also makes a good impression, although in the case of the "six" you will have to reckon with the creaky driver's seat. The 2-liter petrol engines of Mazda and Ford are structurally similar in many ways - this is the result of cooperation between the two companies. The Mondeo motor is characterized as reliable, but, unfortunately, it turns out to be a little sluggish. Burning an average of 9 l / 100 km, you expect more from the engine. In the "six" power unit got a lighter weight, respectively, the dynamics of the car is better, but fuel consumption is also high. Honda delivers the greatest driving pleasure, it is the fastest and least voracious - 8-9 l / 100 km. Each of the motors uses a chain-type timing drive. Honda Accord 2.0

The chord has loyal fans and is unlikely to lose them in the near future. The eighth generation turned out to be thoughtful in every way. It looks attractive, behaves well on the road, and most importantly, it is durable and reliable, especially with a 2-liter gasoline engine under the hood.


It is the 2.0 l engine that, according to many mechanics, is the best choice... If maintenance is carried out in a timely manner (the on-board computer can suggest the need for maintenance) and the manufacturer's recommendations are followed, then the motor almost never causes trouble. Of course, this does not absolve the potential buyer from thoroughly checking the engine.


In the case of the rest of the power units, everything is not so rosy: the 2.4-liter gasoline engine consumes a lot of fuel and sometimes annoys with excessive oil consumption for waste; The 2.2-liter turbodiesel is great from a technical point of view and quite economical, but often struggles with the notorious DPF shortcomings.


Other components of the Accord rarely fail, which is probably due to the legendary reliability of the Japanese and the relatively small age of the model. However, the owners note the noisy operation of the suspension when driving on uneven roads and the rather rapid wear of some of the plastic interior parts. It is also worth mentioning that several cases of the appearance of foci of corrosion under the hatch seal have been recorded. However, no other systematic malfunctions and problems have been identified.

There is little to blame the Accord for in its day-to-day use: it offers comfortable seats, an aesthetic interior, and good driving performance. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment comes during price analysis. The Accord is not one of the cheapest mid-range cars.


Body

When inspecting the car, it is necessary to check two places: the lower part of the hood (in copies of 2008-2009, cases of the appearance of foci of corrosion were noted), as well as the hatch seal, if available (sometimes the seal does not protect well against water ingress and, over time, under it rust occurs).

Engines

2 liter Gas engine turned out to be solid and very reliable. Problems with him are very rare. Much worse in this respect is a turbodiesel, the main headache of which is problems with the DPF filter. In 2011, a service campaign was carried out for cars with a 2.2-liter diesel engine - the software was updated, which is responsible for the operation of the DPF filter, which clogged up too quickly.

Chassis

The suspension copes well with the realities of Russian roads: signs of wear appear only when high mileage... However, there are malfunctions in the steering.

Electrician

There is no doubt about its reliability, although it is more complicated than its predecessor.

Ford Mondeo 2.0

The previous generation of Mondeo, produced in 2000-2007, was initially very good. He was especially appreciated for his large trunk, spacious salon and good driving performance. But in 2005, the Passat B6 appeared, and suddenly it turned out that Ford was no longer a champion in space. The engineers from Cologne decided that the new generation Mondeo (Mk IV) should be huge on the outside and very spacious on the inside.


But new model no longer looks so adorable, weighs a lot and does not behave so freely. In return, the owners received a large trunk - 535 liters for the sedan and 528 liters for the hatchback (1448 liters with the rear seat folded) and rich basic equipment, including full power accessories, ESP, air conditioning and full set airbags, including for the driver's knee.


Among the gasoline engines, the 2-liter with 145 hp is considered the simplest and most reliable. and a 2.3-liter 160 hp. The biggest drawback of motors is high consumption fuel - an average of about 9 l / 100 km.

Malfunctions are rare (ignition coils and alternator) and are inexpensive to fix. The 2.0 liter petrol has a maintenance-free timing chain drive.


It is not recommended to purchase the version with a 1.6-liter petrol engine: this power unit weak, consumes a lot of fuel and sometimes causes problems with the variable valve timing system. On secondary market there are also diesel modifications - the most preferred option is 2.0 TDCi.

After restyling in 2010, turbocharged engines of the EcoBoost family with a working volume of 1.6 and 2.0 liters appeared in the engine line: they are more economical, but relatively expensive and have a large number of additional equipment, such as a start-stop system.


Most importantly, Ford is finally well protected against corrosion: the Cologne native no longer blooms!

Body

Problems with the hood lock are an annoying little thing that affects a large number of copies. The lock wedges due to improper cable routing.

Engines

Structurally simple gasoline engines working volumes of 2.0 liters and 2.3 liters, as a rule, do not cause problems. Sometimes the ignition coils fail, and the generator stops charging. 1.6-liter aspirated often has problems with the variable valve timing system. To repair it, you will need about 30,000 rubles. Disadvantages of the 220 hp 2.5-liter turbocharged engine: leaking crankshaft oil seals and increased oil appetite.

Chassis

A large mass does its job: the stabilizer struts and steering tips quickly wear out, sometimes the front shock absorbers begin to knock - the cost of a new one is about 3300 rubles. In earlier copies, there are problems with the steering rack - knocks and leaks appear. Repairing a faulty rail will require about 10-15 thousand rubles. The rear suspension is very solid.

Electrician

Interruptions in work occur for two reasons: corrosion at the joints and software errors. In the latter case, a software update usually helps. On older specimens, the system for maintaining the angle of inclination of the xenon light beam may fail.

Mazda 6 2.0

The second generation Mazda 6, however, like its predecessor, is in many ways a breakthrough. Passengers on the back seat no longer feel claustrophobic, because lineup all-wheel drive modifications and the sports version of the MPS disappeared, and corrosion from the body. Yes, this is the first mid-range Mazda that doesn't rust.


But, unfortunately, the new "six" has several flaws that are unfamiliar to the previous owners of Mazda. Fortunately, the flaws are not serious. However, knocking on the steering gear (most early production cars), problems with the power steering, or frequently burned out bulbs do not add up to the brand's excellent reputation. Fortunately, there are practically no other defects.


The cost of parts and services in official services is somewhat overpriced. However, the car can be serviced in ordinary unauthorized services.

In terms of practicality, Mazda is a cut above the Accord, but loses to Mondeo, since it is built on a modified platform of its predecessor.

The Six behaves a little worse than the Honda - a pity, as the dynamic design makes you expect more. The 2-liter petrol engine with 147 hp is also not suitable for fast driving. (in Europe since 2010 with direct injection and 155 hp). Fuel consumption is the same as that of Ford: in the combined cycle, it lies in the range of 9 l / 100 km. The 170-horsepower 2.5-liter engine allows much more, but also burns more fuel. Basic 1.8-liter unit with 120 hp. will satisfy only the calmest drivers.


In the secondary market, there are also diesel modifications, which are very popular in Europe. The base 2.0-liter turbodiesel is outdated and difficult to maintain. The 2.2-liter diesel is much better, only if you do not take into account the problems encountered with the timing chain drive. Good dynamics are provided by 2.2-liter units with a capacity of 163 hp.


Most common disadvantages

Body

Owners report fogging frequently rear lights, less often - headlights. A replacement under warranty could only be counted on if there was literally water in the lantern. Since 2009, modified seals have been installed.

Transmission

Often problems arise when switching from the first to the second - the prerogative of diesel modifications. On several occasions, Mazda replaced all gears as part of the warranty, but the issue was never resolved. As the mechanics say, this is an incurable defect in the Mazda 6 GH series manual transmission. Sometimes changing the transmission fluid helps.

Steering

In a large number of cars of the initial period of production, problems appeared in the steering due to a failure of the power steering pump or malfunctions in the operation of control units, accompanied by errors traction control, ESP and ABS.

So the Honda certainly looks better, is fun to drive and basically doesn't break. Many car enthusiasts are ready to put up with its limited functionality, but not everyone agrees with the high price. To this should be added the relatively expensive spare parts and the cost of servicing in official services. Ford, on the other hand, fails a little more often, but it is cheap and inexpensive to maintain, and first of all, the most practical. The "golden mean" is Mazda: it is slightly smaller than Ford, reliable as Honda and at the same time not too expensive.
