According to the rules road traffic in many countries today daytime running lights are the type of optics that must be switched on while driving. Therefore, many car owners are faced with the need to install DRLs on their vehicles. What is the DRL connection diagram with shutdown and how to implement it - read below.

DRL purpose

To connect correctly, you must have at least minimal experience with an electrician. Before we tell you how the DRL is connected in accordance with GOST, we will analyze the purpose of this type optics. Running lights are external lighting elements used to indicate dimensions vehicle in the daytime. As a rule, when installing, car owners use LED lighting sources.

Usually the optics are connected to the dimensions or, but if necessary, a separate button can also be used to control the headlights. Also automatic switching on DRL can be produced using flashlights.

Installation of running lights

Where and how to connect the optics correctly?

To begin with, we propose to find out how the DRL installation is carried out, the basic rules:

  1. Installation of running lights should be done on the surface of the car bumper, which should be in the direction of the original axis. The lights should be installed in such a way that their distance from the edge of the car is no more than 40 cm. If the devices are installed incorrectly, this can threaten the car owner with a fine.
  2. Before installing daytime running lights, you need to take into account that their installation is possible only on cars, but not on trailers. There should be two headlights in total.
  3. The connection diagram for daytime running lights provides for their installation at a distance of 0.25 to 1.5 m above the ground. Moreover, their installation should be carried out only on the front side of the car.
  4. When installing, it must be borne in mind that the direction of the light of the optics must in any case be forward.
  5. Installation of daytime running lights and their connection must be made so that the optics turn on automatically. That is, when the ignition is turned on or when starting power unit, without using additional controls. Accordingly, the lights should also be turned off when the ignition is turned off.
  6. The car owner installing the DRL should know that the area of these sources should be at least 40 cm illuminated, while the luminous intensity should vary around 400-800 cd. If you are using certified optics, they must be marked accordingly.
  7. As for the color of the glow, it should be white in any case.

Instructions for connecting daytime running lights

So, if you decide to connect daytime running lights with your own hands, then you have several options for connecting them to the bot network. Let's consider each of them (the author of the video is the Igrok 777 channel).

Option 1

To begin with, there is a diagram for connecting daytime running lights with automatic shutdown when the engine stops. It should be noted that the connection of DRL according to this scheme will fully comply with traffic rules, especially since it was checked at all domestic cars... A speed sensor is used as a source of information about the movement of the vehicle.

Contacts 1-1 of the circuit should be connected to the low beam control circuit, in particular, to contact 85. If you want only DRLs to work on a car with activated ignition, and not dimensions, then the contacts are connected in parallel. To implement this connection scheme, you need any relay that is equipped with an NC pair of contacts.

Option 2

According to this scheme, the navigation lights will be connected when the power unit is started and the side lights are turned off. This option can also be implemented on any domestic cars, and data on the operation of the motor in this case will be transmitted via a pressure controller motor fluid... All information from this sensor will be transmitted from the tidy. The optics activation procedure can be carried out both through the dimensions and through near illumination(the author of the video is channel 2673Kostya).

But if you want to implement the circuit, then make sure that the oil pressure controller is fully functional, otherwise the signal will be incorrect. Accordingly, the functionality of the optical system as a whole will be impaired.

Option 3

Another option, how to connect the daytime running lights, can be realized using the steering wheel low beam switch. This method involves controlling the headlights after the engine is started - accordingly, when the engine stops, the running lights will automatically turn off. To implement this scheme, you need to prepare in advance two diode lighting sources, not very powerful, and then connect them in series.

Wires are soldered to the lighting sources, their total length should be no more than 40 cm. After completing these steps, you will need to connect the lamps themselves, while observing the polarity, otherwise they will not work. After that, the dashboard is dismantled and disassembled, the contact should be connected to output X1.

Further, the button or switch is removed, with the help of which the navigation lights will be controlled. Connect the other end of the cable to the connector. After the optics are connected, the button or switch is put in place, the operability of the DRL is checked.

Overview of the main control devices

Before connecting the daytime running lights, you need several components, in particular if you are using one of the above circuits:

  1. A regulator that will need to be added to the electrical circuit. This device will automatically activate the optics.
  2. Directly themselves DRL. If you want your headlights to last for a long time, then it is better not to buy cheap Chinese products - they usually have a lower lifespan. Moreover, the quality of the luminescence of Chinese diodes is usually lower.
  3. As stated above, you will also need a relay, and it is important that it has an open pair of contacts.
  4. Controller. This device will also be used to control the headlights.

Conclusion

The DRL installation procedure requires certain skills from the car owner. If you have never faced a similar task before and cannot distinguish a voltage regulator from a controller, then we would advise you to entrust this task to specialists. If you make mistakes in the course of work, this can lead to inoperability of the optics as a whole, which can be an unpleasant "surprise" if you are moving in dark time days.

Video "A simple way to connect DRLs without using a relay"

The video below describes a fairly simple and straightforward way to connect DRLs at home without using a relay (the author of the video is Artem Kvantov).

To highlight the vehicle on the road during daylight hours, it is equipped with daytime running lights. Their installation is optional, since you can use the headlights, but this lighting has a number of disadvantages. You can choose, install and connect DRL in a car with your own hands, even without special knowledge in electrical engineering

What are daytime running lights

Daytime running lights (DRL) are a light source that is directed forward and improves the visibility of the vehicle (TC) when driving during daylight hours. In 2010, a decree was issued in Russia, which states that all vehicle owners must move in daytime with dipped headlights on. If we look at the statistics, the number of accidents after the entry into force of the decree has significantly decreased. From this follows the high efficiency of the use of DRL. In addition, such lighting allows you to give the car a certain personality.

DRL appointment

So, we found out that LED lights allow you to mark the car on the road during daylight hours, and this is especially important in bright sunny weather or in summer rain. If you turn on the side lights, the vehicle will remain unnoticed due to the lower intensity of the emitted light. The light from the dimensions is suitable for night time. Some motorists may have a question - what is the difference between DRL and low beam headlights? Yes, you can drive with low beam, it is not prohibited by law, but there are some nuances that you need to know about:

  1. The service life of lamps and optics in general is reduced. When using expensive lighting equipment, its replacement will require considerable financial costs.
  2. When the dipped beam is turned on, the side lights are simultaneously turned on, and the dashboard is also illuminated. This leads to an increase in energy consumption and a corresponding increase in fuel consumption.

From the above, we can conclude: buying and installing DRL will be the right decision. There is an opinion that this type of lighting can be replaced by fog lamps (PTF), but in reality this is not the case. For foglights, the power consumption is similar to the power of the dipped beam headlights.

Daytime running lights allow you to mark the car on the road during daylight hours and make driving safer

Advantages

The considered design consists of LED elements. DRLs are endowed with a special mode of operation when they are connected when the motor is started. This can be done by choosing one of the lantern connection schemes below or by installing equipment with a control unit. When the dipped headlights are turned on, the DRL power is reduced by 50%, as a result of which this light source works as additional dimensions... Equipping a car with running lights simultaneously solves several problems:

  1. You do not need to constantly remember to turn on the headlights.
  2. LEDs are characterized by much lower power consumption compared to conventional bulbs used in headlights.
  3. Compared to high beam, DRL does not blind oncoming drivers.
  4. The light beam of daytime running lights has an increased light spot size.

One of the important advantages of DRLs is their special design for marking vehicles on the road. Compared to dipped headlights, they provide more light, which is noticeable to other drivers.

The DRL installation has a number of advantages, one of which is the high brightness of the glow, in contrast to the low beam

How to choose

Many car owners are wondering about the choice of DRL. There are many options for this lighting system, and sometimes it is not very easy to make a choice. To make the right decision, you need to consider the size, shape, location where the equipment will be installed. In addition, attention is paid to the brightness of the glow and the manufacturer. Let's dwell on each moment in more detail.

In shape, as well as in size, DRLs can be very diverse. The shape of the body of LED equipment can be round, oblong, triangular or square. It is also possible to construct from separate parts, interconnected by a wire. Before purchasing and installing this or that option, you need to find out whether it will fit in size and how it will look on your car. It is important to determine the installation site in accordance with GOST and taking into account the car bumper. Today, the most popular are rectangular DRLs in a molded case. They can be installed on almost any car, which will make it more attractive.

Now for the brightness of the glow. Basically, the system under consideration consists of two blocks that are mounted on the left and right at the front of the car. Each of the blocks includes a certain number of LEDs (1–12 pcs.). Depending on the number of elements, the brightness of the glow will be different. The standard block of daytime running lights consists of 5 LEDs, but this option is not suitable for every car. The arrangement of elements can be performed at the bottom, top or in the middle. An important point: the color of the glow of the diodes should be white, that is, with a temperature of 5-6 thousand K (kelvin) and a luminous intensity of 400 cd (candela).

The service life, characteristics and overall performance of LED equipment will depend on the manufacturer's choice. The most popular in the field of optics are companies such as Hella, Osram, Philips. The equipment of these companies is different high quality and reliability. There are a number of other manufacturers, but they are inferior in light performance to the brands overpowered above.

DRLs have various forms, characteristics, design features, can be installed in different places in the front of the car

How to choose the right DRL? The main rule that should be followed is the high luminance of the LED elements. It is advisable to choose those devices that have a current consumption of 0.5-1 A. At the same time, power is not always an indicator of the efficiency of daytime running lights. Some experts are of the opinion that the light beam of LED lights should be in the range of 550-700 cd. It is this luminous intensity that makes the vehicle visible from a distance of more than 1 km. In addition to the rectangular shape, the round one is no less popular, since such running lights are characterized by the efficient operation of reflectors.

Preference should also be given to those devices, the body of which is made of aluminum. This allows them to be equipped with more powerful LED elements, since the metal is endowed with high heat dissipation, which contributes to better cooling when installing light sources with high efficiency. Considering the best option from the point of view of installation, then attention should be paid to those devices that have a direct connection to the battery, bypassing the ignition system. The principle of operation of such equipment involves switching on when a certain voltage of the vehicle's on-board network is reached.

Legal regulations for the installation of DRL

It is important to know and take into account the requirements for the selection and installation of LED lights:

  • the number of LED blocks should be no more than 2 pcs.;
  • installation of DRL on trailers is prohibited;
  • the inclusion of running lights should be automatic;
  • the lighting unit must be round or rectangular;
  • depending on the location of the DRL, the size may differ: smaller devices are installed on the air intake, on the larger bumper;
  • LED units should have a brightness of 150-330 lumens, while the number of elements and their size are selected independently.

During the installation process, it is important to consider:

  • instead of running lights, you can use headlights high beam or foglights;
  • there are no special requirements for the connection diagram;
  • daytime lights should be located at a distance of no more than 40 cm from the edge of the car body;
  • the distance between DRLs must be at least 60 cm, and if the vehicle is less than 130 cm wide, it can be reduced to 40 cm;
  • when installing, the running lights are directed forward, while the horizontal angle should be 20 ˚, vertical 10 ˚;
  • the operation of running lights with a stroboscopic effect is prohibited;
  • LEDs should light up when the engine starts and go out after turning on the head optics.

It is worth noting that self-installation of DRL is permitted and legal in accordance with RF Resolution No. 720, which is dated September 2009. In this case, it is important not to fall under the restrictions of GOST, which requires certification of compliance with any changes in the vehicle design.

Installation of DRL on the car must be carried out taking into account the current rules

How to install on a car with your own hands

First of all, it should be said that for the installation of the system in question, the following list of materials and tools will be required:

  • pliers;
  • nippers;
  • soldering iron;
  • insulated two-core wire;
  • LED blocks;
  • relay for 12V;
  • reed switch;
  • single core wire;
  • plastic clamps.

The list may be different depending on the scheme and place of installation. In the case of using DRL made in China, before installation, it is recommended to treat the case with a sealant to avoid water ingress. Consider several options for schemes with which you can connect DRLs.

Daytime running lights connection diagrams

One of the simplest options is to automatically turn on the running lights when the ignition is turned on and the engine is started. The circuit does not have any additional elements: LED equipment is connected to the power supply of the on-board network: plus for the ignition switch, minus for ground (body). With such an installation, no special skills and knowledge of electrical engineering are required.

A circuit that implements the inclusion of daytime running lights automatically when the ignition is turned on

There is another scheme, which is similar to the first, but the difference is that the running lights turn off when the dipped headlights are turned on. The differences are that the positive wire is connected, as in the previous scheme, and the negative wire is connected to the "+" of the dipped-beam lamps. The operation of such a circuit is due to the fact that ordinary lamps are characterized by a higher current consumption than LEDs and a lower resistance. As a result, the lamp will not work even at full capacity, and this will not affect the operation of the running lights in any way. At the moment the dipped beam is turned on, a "+" will appear on the negative wire of the DRL, which will lead to their disconnection. But at the same time, turning on the high beam will lead to the launch of the running lights. In this case, the DRL can be connected to the dimensions.

The scheme in which DRLs are started when the side lights are turned on

For the following circuit, you will need an element such as a reed switch. In it, DRLs work when starting and running the engine. We connect the negative wire from the LED equipment to ground, and the positive wire to 30 contact of the relay, 87 contact to "+" of the battery or any wire with a large cross-sectional diameter, 85 contact of the relay is connected to the total ground, 86 to one of the reed switch contacts. The second output of the reed switch is connected to any “+”, for example, from a battery or a generator. Next, we start the engine and by moving the reed switch we find the position at which the relay will work and the LEDs will work. We mount the reed switch, which is previously placed in a heat-shrinkable tube, using a plastic tie to the generator in the appropriate position. If there is no reed switch, then you can slightly alter the circuit by connecting 86 contact with the oil pressure lamp, which is located on the instrument panel. As a result, the running lights will come on when the engine is started.

The inclusion of DRL can be realized when starting the engine by using a reed switch

Installation locations

Many car owners do not install LED lighting according to the rules. Therefore, you need to figure out where you can install this type of lighting equipment:

  1. One of the installation methods is on the bottom of the radiator grill. The car owner chooses running lights based on his preferences.
  2. Installation of DRL from the bottom or top of the radiator grill, while using LED strips. This is one of the options that is not considered by law as DRL, since the LED strip is more a tuning element than a lighting element.
  3. Installation of LEDs around the perimeter of the grille. The variant does not comply with the vehicle safety rules.
  4. Installation of LED strip in head optics. It is widely used on tenth generation VAZ cars. This method of installation meets the requirements of operation and is approved for use.
  5. Installation of daytime running lights in places provided for PTF (fog lights). This option is approved for operation and meets safety requirements. In most cases, circular lanterns are used for this method. But since fog lights can be used instead of running lights, this option is not very popular.

Installation and connection process

We begin work with the selection of a place. At this stage, it is important to take into account not only the dimensions of the vehicle and the method of fastening, but also the recommendations for installation. Running lights must be located at a height of 350 mm to 1500 mm from the roadway. The minimum height is 250 mm, but if the car is operated with a load, the body will lower. This point must be taken into account. Depending on what type of vehicle the DRLs are installed on, the optimal height parameter can range from 400 mm to 800 mm.

The DRL kit, depending on the specific model of the device, consists of LEDs, wires, mounting brackets, instructions and a control unit

The next stage is the installation of running lights. When purchasing equipment, the kit must contain everything you need: LEDs, wires, instructions and other materials. When installing the DRL in the radiator grille, it will need to be removed. The place where the bracket will be mounted must be washed and degreased. Then double-sided tape is glued, the shape of which corresponds to the shape of the staple. After removing the protective layer, a bracket is attached to the tape. Before the clamp is fixed, pull the wire that goes from the body. Experts recommend making the mount more reliable and not relying only on tape. In this case, holes are drilled and fastening is done using self-tapping screws. Even when mounted on tape, fixing on self-tapping screws is performed.

One of the popular DRL installation locations is the grille.

The next step is to install the control unit. It is best to locate the unit near the battery, but away from the engine to avoid overheating. Since the enclosure is sealed and waterproof, no additional protective measures are required. The unit is connected according to the standard scheme:

  • The red wire is connected to the “+”, the black one to the “-” of the battery.
  • The orange wire should be connected to the dipped headlights or dimensions. The purpose of the orange wire is to turn off the DRL when the headlights are turned on. If you do not connect this wire, then the LEDs will shine too brightly and dazzle oncoming drivers.
  • When the head optics are turned off, the LEDs should glow brightly.
  • The lanterns are connected to the unit with a corresponding cable on a detachable connection.

Standard connection of DRL to the battery terminals, which is the most reliable power supply option

After the work done, it is necessary to check whether everything has been done correctly. When the engine starts, the DRL should light up, when the headlights are turned on, they should dim, and when the engine is turned off, they should completely go out. If the LEDs glow for about 20 seconds after the engine is turned off, then this is considered normal. After you have checked and made sure that the system is working correctly, fix the central unit and fix the LED blocks. To do this, they are inserted and snapped into the mounting bracket.

Next, the wiring is neatly laid under the hood and secured with plastic ties. Important: Do not attach wires to the fuel line, pressure hoses and radiator pipe. Upon completion of all operations, the grille is installed in place. Above, the option with a control unit was considered. If there is none, then you will need to install the relay along the dipped beam circuit in accordance with the above diagrams.

The DRL control unit is located near the battery, but away from the engine to avoid overheating

DIY control unit

If you are familiar with electrical engineering, then why not assemble the DRL unit yourself. The principle of operation of such a unit is that it receives voltage when the ignition is turned on, and it determines the operation of the engine by the frequency of pulses on the ignition coil. If the time of the presence of the pulses is more than 5 s, then the DRL is automatically turned on. If there are no pulses within the specified time, then the lighting will not turn on. In addition, the unit turns off the LEDs when the head light is turned on.

It is connected as follows:

  • power is taken at any point where it is present when the ignition is turned on;
  • to count the pulses, the connection is made to the ignition coil;
  • the signal to turn on the main lighting is taken from the point at which 12 V appears when the head light is turned on;
  • at the output of the device, a car relay with a consumption current of no more than 200 mA at a voltage of 12 V is used, while the switched current should be 30–40 A;
  • connect the negative wire to ground.

With sufficient knowledge in the field of electronics, you can assemble a diagram of the DRL control unit with your own hands

DRL connection through the generator

Consider how you can power the daytime running lights from a generator using a standard car relay (5 pins). The connection process is as follows:

  • The 30th contact of the relay is connected to terminal D of the generator;
  • The 80th is connected to the "+" of the dimensions;
  • 87th - connects to "+" LED blocks;
  • 86th - body weight.

In addition to the relay, the circuit assumes the use of a button, which must be connected in a circuit between the 30th contact of the relay and the generator. As a result, the device will work as follows:

  • When the engine is started, "+" goes from the generator through the button to the 30th relay contact. Further, the current flows to the "+" contacts of the lanterns daylight, which causes the LEDs to light up.
  • When the side lights are turned on, a voltage arises between the relay contacts (85 and 86), the coil is triggered and the contacts (30 and 87) are closed. At the 87th pin, there is no voltage and the DRLs are turned off.

Installation and connection to standard headlights

Daytime running lights can be built into standard optics, for example, in PTF. To do this, you only need to redo the fog lights so that they turn on the right way, while the fog lights themselves will still work. To implement the plan, you will need two relays for 4 and 5 contacts. The connection is made as follows:

  • 85 contact of the first relay is connected to ground;
  • 86 contact goes to “+” side lights or low beam;
  • Contact 30 is connected to 87 of the second relay;
  • from contact 87, a connection is made to the “+” headlight output, while the PTF connection remains intact;
  • 86 contact of the second relay is connected to the generator “+”;
  • The 30th contact of the second relay is connected with a wire to the “+” battery through a fuse;
  • Contact 85 of the second relay is connected to ground.

It is worth noting that when the 86 contact of the second relay is connected to the generator, the DRL will start working as soon as the engine starts. If the connection is made through the ignition switch, the LEDs will light up after the ignition is turned on. Both options will be correct, and the choice is only yours.

As you could understand, DRL connection is possible in different ways. In this case, either a relay or a special control unit for the lighting system can be used. Which option to give preference, everyone chooses independently. Above, it was described not only what daytime running lights are intended for, but also possible ways installations and connection diagrams. As a result, it will not be difficult to equip your car with such lighting.

Video: An example of installing joint optics of DRL and PTF on a Dacia Renault logan

Installing daytime running lights on a car is not a complicated procedure and can be done by anyone if necessary. The main thing is to familiarize yourself with the possible connection diagrams, installation sites and perform a neat installation, adhering to certain rules and recommendations.

Or DRLs are becoming more affordable and popular. Manufacturers give many reasons for their installation, including minimal fuel consumption due to lower energy consumption, long service life and high quality.

Since 2010, Russian legislation has introduced their mandatory use with the alternating inclusion of dipped beam headlights in the daytime. EU regulations require DRLs to be installed on all new car models. It is also possible to install them on older cars, thus increasing their attractiveness and safety.

The market for daytime running lights is extremely high and seemingly saturated with similar options. The modules are so simple that even a beginner can install them. In the meantime, editing is a serious matter, and before you get started, take a look at a few details that will influence your choice.

What are daytime running lights for?

With the arrival of the summer period, relatively Better conditions driving - dry weather, long days and lots of sunshine. But it is precisely the latter indicator that is not always the driver's allies. It often blinds and causes eye fatigue.

According to some studies, the use of daytime running lights increases the vehicle's visibility on the road, which helps to avoid many accidents. In the EU countries, since 2011, DRLs must be installed on all produced cars, in Russia a year earlier it is in effect, where there is a requirement to turn on the light (either fog lights, or dipped beam headlights, or daytime running lights) during daylight hours. What is the difference between these types of automotive lighting?

On the video - installation of DRL:

Better visibility

Daytime running lights are used to make the vehicle more visible during the day. In contrast to the low beam, they are equipped with powerful LED lights, so that the modules are more visible to other road users. Moreover, these lights are designed in the way that they are. The daytime running lights come on when the car is started, but you can only drive with them during the day. When it gets dark, you need to switch to low beam, automatically turning off the DRL.

Less fuel consumption

Another advantage of daytime running lights is their energy efficiency. They only consume 10% of the energy required for standard low beam headlamps. Daytime running lights have a huge impact on fuel consumption as a single module consumes 6.8 watts, or less than 14 watts in total. In comparison, a single halogen low beam lamp consumes 60 W, which is 8 times more. In addition, DRLs operate up to 10 thousand hours, which is equivalent to 500,000 km of travel.

Modern design

The LED technology used in the production of daytime running lights is known as one of the most innovative and innovative.

Self-installation

Some manufacturers offer do-it-yourself daytime running lights. Such kits include:

  1. Two LED modules with wires and plugs.
  2. Control block.
  3. Installation components:
    • two pressure brackets;
    • long cables (6 meters);
    • simple connector;
    • bolts;
    • latches;
    • installation instructions.

But nevertheless, having installed the DRL, you need to check in the nearest workshop.

How to mount daytime running lights

Their installation is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. Basic tools such as a screwdriver are enough to do this job. But, before deciding to assemble the modules, you need to choose a suitable lighting model.

The video shows the installation of daytime running lights on a VAZ:

According to the position of the daytime running light:

  1. Should be automatically activated when the device for starting or stopping the engine is in the operating position.
  2. Should automatically turn off when the fog lamps or dipped beam headlights are turned on.
  3. The front, side and rear marker lamps, marker lamps and the rear lamp will not turn on if the daytime running lights are on.
  4. Must be at the front of the vehicle, white, symmetrically placed and at the same height.
  5. Must not protrude beyond the outer dimensions of the vehicle.

DRL selection

When buying, you should carefully look at the light. Lights must be properly marked, which is proof of their use on the territory of Russia. Unfortunately, the cheapest kits often do not have the characteristics required by the law. The glass must bear the approval stamp E along with the identification number of the issuing country.

The RL reflector is also mandatory - designation of the version number of the rules according to which the certificate was issued, the certificate number and the manufacturer's name. The marking must be durable, indelible and visible on the vehicle. These requirements are fulfilled by a number of companies producing day care products, for example Hella, Philips or Osram.

Installation height

Daytime running lamps may not be installed more than 1500 mm or less than 200 mm from the ground, and the distance between them must not be less than 600 mm. If the width of the vehicle is less than 1,300 mm, the distance between the lights shall be 400 mm. They can also protrude beyond the contour of the vehicle and must be installed 400 mm from the edge of the vehicle.

Installing the system

What is your opinion on self-installation of daytime running lights?

After the adoption of the law on the use of daytime running lights (DRL) when driving on a compulsory basis, most motorists "hurried" to ensure that these attributes were installed on their vehicles. The adoption of such a law is a decision to improve road safety on highways and large settlements.

Every motorist should know how to install daytime running lights. The implementation of this procedure is actually not as difficult as it initially seems. The correct approach and adherence to the instructions will help you avoid common mistakes and save a lot of time and frustration.

The main task of DRL is ensuring optimal visibility of the vehicle for other drivers. In addition to the designating function, they play the role of a design element that frees the hands of car tuning enthusiasts.

The primary colors of LED lights used by drivers are bright blue or white. The advantage of this color is good illumination and economy.

Types of daytime running lights

Front emitters of lamps, unlike ordinary headlights, are special devices of industrial production. They have many benefits, such as reduced fuel consumption and battery savings. DRL installation does not cause any difficulties.

Multiple Requirements

When installing, it is necessary to comply with some requirements of GOST. This will allow you to mount daytime running lights without any unpleasant consequences and problems.

GOST requirements for installing DRL

What you need to know when installing:

  • 60 cm is the minimum distance between lights;
  • 25 cm is the minimum height that measures the distance between the ground and the bottom of the installed lights;
  • 40 cm is the maximum distance from the extreme point of the vehicle body.

Important! The use of DRLs as main headlights or headlights is unacceptable as they function as an auxiliary lighting aid. Installation of more than 2 lights is prohibited.

Installation procedure

DRL device

Turning on the lights together with starting the engine indicates that the installation was performed correctly, in accordance with all the instructions. Some drivers prefer installing an additional toggle switch that is responsible for turning the system on and off.

Carefully! Neglecting accepted norms and standards will lead to the creation of unpleasant moments associated with the road traffic inspection.

The main thing is to start

The famous phrase of Gorbachev, like nothing else, helps with motivation to achieve a specific goal. The beginning of our installation process is to purchase the required running lights from an auto parts store. There are many different manufacturers and even more models, so an inexperienced person can easily get confused. In this case, it is better to contact the seller or consultant. Most of the lights produced meet all GOST standards and are ready for subsequent installation.

Approaching the procedure, motorists must take into account certain requirements:

DRL installation kit

The installation location will depend on the block (meaning its size and shape), but this does not create problems, since regardless of the shape (rectangular or oval), the dimensions of the block are small. Considering the main and "favorite" places for installing emitters, one cannot fail to mention the air intake and bumper, where most often motorists put LEDs.

We carry out the installation step by step

This guide explains how to install universal LED daytime running lights on any vehicle. Installation is quite simple, you just need to devote a little time to this procedure.

Step 1. Insert the wire into the bracket.

We begin the installation procedure

Step 2. Install the bracket. Since they are versatile daytime running lights, you can install them anywhere you like. Most often, they choose a place at the bottom of the bumper.

Most often they choose a place on the bumper

Step 3. After installing the bracket, you can fix the daytime running lights to the bracket.

Attach the lantern carefully

Step 4... After you install the DRL using the bracket, connect the wires and route them around the battery / fuse box.

We connect the wires

Step 5. Use plastic ties to secure the wire along the bumper. If you wish, you can choose another "wired path".

Fasten the wire securely with clamps

Step 6. Find the ACC on your fuse box and click on the red wire there. You can find the location of the ACC fuse using an electronic meter by clamping the black wire to the negative of the battery. Insert the tester handle into the fuse box in any unoccupied slot and note the places where the tester handle does not light up. Start the engine and check the slots that don't light. Find a spot that only glows when the engine is running. This is the ACC seat.

Use a dedicated search tester

Basically, when the engine is on, the indicator lights up. When the engine is off, the indicator is accordingly also off. Press the black wire to the negative terminal of the battery

Step 9. The pictures in the installation guide will guide you through this procedure with ease.

The result of the work done will pleasantly surprise you

Knowing how to install daytime running lights in accordance with all norms and requirements, you can save yourself from possible problems with representatives of the traffic police and increase the level of safety. Performing such a "tuning" will practically not affect the amount of fuel burned (consumption).

Video - How to install DRL on a VAZ 2106

Daytime running lights are designed to improve road safety. European studies have shown that the use of DRL reduces road accidents by about 6%. However, for the past five years, all products of the European automotive industry have been supplied with DRL at the plant.

Traffic regulations oblige drivers to provide daytime illumination of the vehicle. Low beam lights or fog lights can act as this. However, their constant use puts a strain on the battery, and the lamps also wear out.

Possible daytime running lights:

  1. Low beam headlamps when the engine is running;
  2. High beam headlamps operating at reduced power;
  3. Fog lights (PTF) with a modified algorithm of work. When the ignition starts, they should turn on, and go out when the headlights are turned on.

An alternative is special daytime running lights (DRL). Newer car models are equipped with them in production. On an older model, on a VAZ 2101, for example, you can install a DRL kit yourself, quickly and easily.

Video tutorial on how to connect daytime running lights

Choice of daytime running lights

There are many different DRL kits on the market. Venerable European brands coexist with high-quality products from China. The main difference between them is the value for money. The choice of a specific model depends on the preferences, needs and capabilities of the car owner himself.

There are also quite a few configurations of such lights. The most common in-line lighting configuration. She represents led strip enclosed in transparent plastic to correct the luminous flux. There are options for the arrangement of the diodes in a square or fit on flexible tapes.

DRLs of a higher class are equipped with special relays that allow simultaneous activation with the start of the engine. In addition, these relays coordinate the operation of daytime running lights and emergency lights.

In more simple options such systems are not provided, but if you have a little skills and a couple of relays, you can organize them yourself. The installation of newly acquired DRLs can be entrusted to professionals, although you can do it yourself. The process is not complicated, but time consuming.

Do-it-yourself installation of running lights

Before installing DRL, you need to prepare materials:

  • The actual set of lights.
  • Heat-shrinkable insulation (or electrical tape).
  • Plastic clips for wires.
  • Relay for organizing switching on at ignition start.

Next, you will need to decide on the future location of the DRL. Of course, they should be placed on the front of the body. Most often this is a bumper or air intake, but you can attach them to the radiator grill. The installation of fog lamps in place is also common. When choosing the location of DRL on a car, you need to take into account a number of traffic rules requirements:

  • The height of the DRL should not exceed 1500 millimeters or be less than 250 millimeters;
  • The distance from the outer edge of the vehicle to the outer edge of the lights shall not exceed 400 millimeters;
  • The distance between the inner edges of the lighting fixtures should not exceed 600 millimeters. The minimum distance for a car with an overall width of less than 1300 millimeters is reduced to 400 millimeters.

Fastening blocks to the body can be done different ways... Double-sided tape is often supplied in the kit, but its reliability is in doubt, therefore it is better to provide for the possibility of fastening to self-tapping screws.

TIP: It is better to additionally treat the DRL of the body of Chinese-made lights with a sealant, since there are cases of water getting into them. As a result, the diodes burn out, and it becomes necessary to replace them.

After attaching the DRL, you can start connecting the wiring. Naturally, it is imperative to disconnect the battery before starting work. The circuit included in the kit will help you connect the lights correctly. If DRLs are installed that have a control unit, then you will probably have to look for a place for it under the hood. It is best to secure the stretched wires with special clamps, because there are many heating elements under the hood that can damage the wiring.

If there is no such unit, then the relay will have to be built into the dipped beam circuit. It is important not to forget to install a fuse in the DRL connection circuit. The hassle is not much more, but the benefits are obvious. For ease of use, you can take it out on dashboard a special button for turning on the DRL.

If you have some skills in DRL, you can make it out of fog lights. Such use of them does not contradict the legislation at all.

On the territory of the Russian Federation, amendments to the rules of the road (SDA) have been in force for more than 8 years, according to which a moving vehicle in the daytime must be marked with dipped headlights, fog lamps (PTF) or daytime running lights (DRL). The use of head and fog lamps for these purposes has a number of disadvantages. Therefore, drivers prefer to buy ready-made running light modules and install them on their own in their car. How to properly connect daytime running lights so that their operation is safe and does not contradict applicable laws?

The nuances of turning on the running lights

Basic instructions for installation technical parameters and the connection of running lights are listed in paragraph 6.19 of GOST R 41.48-2004. In particular, the electrical functional diagram of the DRL must be assembled in such a way that the running lights automatically turn on when the ignition key is turned (starting the engine). In this case, they should automatically turn off if the headlights are turned on.

Paragraph 5.12 of this standard states that headlamps (FGS) should be switched on only after the dimensions are turned on, with the exception of short-term warning signals. When connecting the DRL on your own, this feature must be taken into account.

The correct connection of the DRL is not limited to a well-thought-out functional diagram. It's time to remember about the stabilization unit for LEDs. In the navigation lights themselves, resistors perform the role of a current limiter, however, due to voltage drops, resistors cannot limit the current at one level. That is why a voltage regulator in the connection circuit of running lights is extremely necessary. Otherwise, the service life of the DRL LED modules is significantly reduced due to constant drops in the on-board voltage. Some car enthusiasts say that it is possible to connect running lights without a stabilizer.

Connecting and installing an LED driver is a waste of time, because DRLs on LEDs regularly shine for months without any stabilization ...

However, this statement is easy to dispute. The fact is that with each voltage jump on the LED module, more than 12 V appears, the direct current through the LEDs exceeds the nominal value, which leads to overheating of the emitting crystal. The brightness of the LEDs decreases, such DRLs will no longer be able to fulfill their immediate task - from afar to warn drivers of oncoming vehicles, and over time they will begin to flicker and fail.

Using LED DRLs without a voltage stabilizer means throwing away at least several hundred rubles every year for new modules and wasting time replacing them.

For ease of understanding, the circuits below are shown without the use of a regulator.

The simplest scheme

The most simple circuit the inclusion of DRL when starting the engine is shown in the figure. The positive wire is connected to the "+" terminal of the ignition switch. The negative wire is attached to the machine body in a convenient place. In this form, the circuit has a significant drawback. The LED daytime running lights will emit light as long as the ignition key is turned. In addition, their work is not coordinated with the work of other headlights, which means that it does not meet the requirements of GOST.

Inclusion through dimensions or low beam

The second version of the DRL connection scheme involves using the power circuit parking light... For this, the positive wire from the navigation lights is directly connected to the "+" from the battery. In turn, the negative wire is connected to the "+" of the side light, which is electrically neutral at the moment. As a result, the following path of current flow is formed: from the "+" battery through the LEDs to the size, and then through the light bulb to the body, which serves as the minus of the entire circuit. Due to the low current consumption (tens of mA), the LEDs begin to glow, and the lamp spiral remains extinguished.
If the driver turns on the side lights, then +12 V appears on the plus of the size, the potentials on the DRL wires are equalized and the LEDs go out. The circuit goes into normal mode, that is, the current flows through the side light bulbs.

This circuit design has several disadvantages:

  • running lights remain in operation when the engine is off, which is contrary to current regulations;
  • the circuit will not work if LEDs are also installed in the dimensions;
  • the circuit will not work correctly if powerful SMD LEDs are placed in the DRL, the rated current of which is commensurate with the current of the light bulb;
  • for safety reasons, an additional fuse must be installed.

This connection method can be improved by connecting the positive wire of the LED module not to the "+" of the battery, but to the "+" of the ignition switch, thereby getting rid of the first drawback.
Some motorists use circuits for switching on running lights through a low beam lamp. That is, when the dipped beam is turned on, the DRLs automatically go out, and in other cases they work. In addition to the above disadvantages, this method does not comply with GOST R 41.48-2004 and traffic rules.

When the car is parked at night, parking lights are used to indicate it, the use of DRL traffic rules is prohibited.

Connection via a 4-pin relay from a generator or oil sensor

The following two methods have a common basis and imply the operation of daytime running lights only after starting the engine. The scheme for switching on the DRL from the generator is based on switching a four-contact relay and a reed switch.
The DRL relay contacts are connected as follows:

  • 85 - for the positive wire to the dimensions;
  • 86 - to any output of the reed switch;
  • 87 and the second output of the reed switch - to the "+" of the battery.

After checking the reliability of all contacts, they proceed to setting up. To do this, start the engine and, moving the reed switch near the generator, achieve its operation and a stable glow of the DRL. Then the reed switch is hidden in a thermotube and fixed in the found place with the help of nylon ties.

At the moment of starting the engine, and then the generator, the contacts of the reed switch and the relay close, supplying the supply voltage to the LEDs of the running lights. In this case, the size lamps remain off, since the current through the relay coil is small to light them.

In the absence of a reed switch, you can power the DRL from the oil pressure sensor. In this case, the 86th contact is connected to the oil pressure lamp. The rest of the circuitry is duplicated.
Both schemes have a common flaw. They cannot be used if LEDs are installed in the dimensions.

Connection via 5 pin relay

Now it's time to learn how to connect the running lights via a 5-pin relay. The scheme is the most versatile, and is assembled in order to eliminate the disadvantages of the previous options.
First, about connecting a relay for DRL:

  • 30 - to positive terminals of LED modules;
  • 85 - to the plus wire of the marker lamp;
  • 86 - on the car body;
  • 87а - to "+" from the ignition lock;
  • 87 - do not connect (insulate).

The circuit with a five-contact relay works as follows. When you turn the key, +12 V voltage is supplied to the DRL, thereby turning them on. If you turn on the side lights or headlights, the relay will open contact 87a and close the inactive contact 87. As a result, the DRL will go out and the dimensions will turn on. The circuit fully complies with the requirements of GOST and SDA and can work with parking lights even based on LEDs.

However, the circuit still has one negative point- DRLs will turn on immediately after turning the ignition switch. That is, if you turn the key in the ignition lock, but do not start the car, the DRLs will burn.

Despite the existing drawback, the circuit is quite successful, but in order to correctly connect the DRL through a five-contact relay, it will be necessary to supplement the circuit with a voltage stabilizer.

This switching option is interesting in that the path of current flow through the running lights is independent. This allows you to install light sources of any type and power in headlights with dimensions and DRLs.

DRL control unit

The most reliable and simplest is the option of connecting a DRL without a relay, but using a special navigation light control unit. It ensures that the DRL is turned on after starting the engine, guarantees safe operation, protects against overloads and can be installed on a car with any type of lamp, including LED.

Unfortunately, among all the variety of industrially manufactured DRL blocks, the overwhelming majority does not comply with GOST and has a mediocre build quality.

This concerns, first of all, products from AliExpress, which do not meet the requirements in almost all aspects.

Among all the variety, only 2 options can be noted: the Russian DayLight + DRL control unit and German products from Philips and Osram. The DayLight + control unit was developed by the Russian radio engineer Isachenkov Fedor, taking into account all the features of the vehicle's on-board network and has a number of positive aspects:

  • there is a built-in voltage stabilization;
  • full compliance with GOST;
  • the maximum long-term load power is 36 watts (much less is required for DRL);
  • the simplest connection diagram.

In addition to the above points, the DayLight + unit is universal and fits all vehicles with onboard network 12 volts, and also has good build quality and a high degree of protection against moisture and dust.
German products from Philips and Osram also have all the above advantages of the DayLight + unit, however, German control units are supplied only together with daytime running lights and have a higher cost.

Daytime running lights have nothing to do with dimensions and are lighting devices that improve the driver's visibility in the daytime.

Standard DRLs are LEDs that shine brightly and are characterized by a long working life. When you use daytime running lights on a VAZ 2107, you should not additionally turn on the low beam or fog light.

Installation rules

Installation of additional lighting on a domestic car does not require qualifications and experience. However, if the installation is incorrect, you run the risk of running into a fine from traffic cops, becoming the owner of an administrative violation.

To prevent this from happening, connect following the rules:

  • read GOST R 41.48-2004. It concerns the rules for installing lighting devices on a car and certification of the vehicle in this regard. All the parameters that you must take into account when installing these devices are written there;
  • choose a suitable DRL body shape. Please note that not all lighting devices are suitable for the VAZ 2107. Drivers consider the best choice in terms of price-quality ratio;

Daytime running lights Philips LED DayLight 9
  • check the size of the case, taking into account the blocks of the nearby Daytime Running Lights. Install the lighting fixtures in the air intake or bumper, as appropriate;
  • the height of the body of the products in the frame is 250-1500 mm from the road surface. The width between the inner edges of the 2 surfaces visible on the vehicle must be at least 600 mm;
  • products are located in front of the machine, and the beam of rays is directed forward;
  • consider the overall brightness of the LED lighting. It is 150-330 lumens.

Installation process

After buying ordinary ones or before you are faced with the question: how to connect new devices to the VAZ? This requires:

  • take a five-contact relay from a domestic manufacturer;

Five-contact relay of a domestic manufacturer
  • take a positive charge from the ignition to contact No. 30 (as an option - a wire from the button responsible for heating the rear window);
  • connect connection No. 86 to the low-beam lighting using the button for activating the dimensions and low-beam lamps;
  • # 85 - Throw it on the ground;
  • No. 88 - connect to DRL;
  • No. 87 is not required during operation and does not connect to anything.

Wiring diagram for daytime running lights on the VAZ 2107

Relay - put in the box. Under the car's hood, pull only the wiring that goes directly to the lights. Such

Many car enthusiasts have not yet installed daytime running lights on their car, but maybe they have thought about it for a long time. It's no secret that the absence of running lights, as well as the switched off low beam / fog lights, can cause your vehicle to stop by a vigilant traffic police inspector, which is not very desirable for most drivers, unless the latter lack communication with people and are happy any company at any time.

In addition, if you use low beam or fog lights as daytime running lights (hereinafter referred to as DRL), you will probably have to change the lamps in these headlights much more often. There is also a moment of increased gas consumption during constant driving with the dipped beam on. Of course, this expense is negligible compared to the main one, but it still takes place.

If you have a certain amount of time (depending on skills and experience) and desire, it is not such a difficult task to correctly install DRL on a car for people who know how to hold a soldering iron in their hands and crimp terminals with wires, and in this article I will tell you how to do it ...

Of the tools and materials we need: a crimping device (if you have some skill, pliers are also suitable), a soldering iron, nippers, a knife, a lighter (as an option for tightening a heat-shrinkable tube), 3-4 meters of two-core wire in PVA 2x1.5 insulation (2x0 is possible .75, if the DRLs are LED, not foglights with halogens!). This wire is needed to connect two lamps in parallel.

You will need a standard 12-volt automotive relay, four-pin, reed switch (any), single wire with a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 mm. about 2-3m., plastic clamps, heat shrinkage. It seems that that's all.

Now a few words about connection options.

Option 1. You can make the DRLs turn on when the ignition is turned on and not turn off until the engine is turned off. This is the easiest option. The negative wire is attached to the car body in any convenient place, the positive wire - to the positive from the ignition switch or to terminal D of the high-voltage module, preferably through a fuse (not shown in the diagram).

Option 2. The same option, but when the dipped beam is turned on, the DRLs go out. In this case, we connect the plus in the same way as in the first option, and the minus to the positive wire of the low beam lamp (either of the two). The fact is that an incandescent lamp consumes much more current and has a much lower resistance than LED DRLs and therefore, when the DRL is turned on in this way, the lamp filament will not heat up even to the minimum glow at full heat, and at work DRL the resistance of the lamp filament ( even warmed up) will have practically no effect.

As soon as you turn on the dipped beam, a plus will appear on the minus of the DRL, and they will go out. True, if you turn on the distant one, the DRLs will light up again. In this case, you can connect the DRL to the side lamps in the same way (if incandescent lamps are used as such, and not LED ones!). In most of the cars I know, the marker lamps are a priori connected in parallel, so that you can hook a common negative wire from two DRL lights to any marker lamp.

Option 3. This is an option when the DRLs are turned on automatically only when the engine is started and running. In this case, we connect the minus DRL also to the car body, and plus to the 30th contact of the relay. Contact 87 is connected to the plus more powerful, (you can connect to the positive terminal of the battery), 85 contact of the relay - to the car ground through the lamps of the running lights, and 86 - to the reed switch, to one of its terminals.

The second output of the reed switch is also connected to any plus nearby (it is possible from the generator or from there - from the battery). We start the car and move the reed switch around the generator to trigger the relay and ignite the DRL. We attach the reed switch, previously packaged in heat shrinkage, using a plastic clamp to the generator in the found position and you're done.

Option 4. If there is no reed switch. Everything is the same, only 86 contact - to the oil pressure lamp in the instrument panel.

That's all. In conclusion, I will say that using something that is made with your own hands is much more pleasant than that made by strangers. Good luck in implementing your and not yours, but, most importantly, interesting ideas.
