"Today we will consider a detailed step by step instructions on the assembly of a homemade tracked all-terrain vehicle "Ulan-3" This all-terrain vehicle was assembled by craftsman Alexander Ulanov from the Sverdlovsk region, the village of Novaya Lyalya. The tracked all-terrain vehicle assembled entirely from components and assemblies of domestic production, borrowed from cars and motorcycles, the only engine was bought by a new "Lifan" 22 l / s. assembled from a conveyor belt, and metal corners are used as tracks, the caterpillar is connected to each other through a metal loop. Wheels from VAZ are installed as road wheels. Motorcycle gearbox « « Cardan shaft from a potato digger with gear ratio 1.25. Planetary brake with a gear ratio of 4 to disc brake... The weight of the car is about 650 kg.

A caterpillar is assembled, the master uses a corner as a track.

Here is such a wonderful tracked all-terrain vehicle turned out, you can go fishing, hunting, in the forest-taiga for mushrooms and berries. Due to the sealed boat hull, it can float on water. Also, be sure to look at how the clutch made from the clutch discs of the Ural motorcycle is arranged. Enjoy your look.

Perm tuning studio REMIX conceived to create tracked all-terrain vehicle on the basis of the Okovsky or VAZ engine and test on it some controversial ideas regarding such a technique. The original intention of the team was to build tracked all-terrain vehicle with an engine from a car (OKA or VAZ 2108), bridges from VAZ 2101 and Nivovskaya RK.
The hull should look like a boat and be made of metal. Wheels from VAZ on eight-speed hubs will serve as rollers.
Tracked all-terrain vehicle, like all others like him, will have a differential rotation. Drive - tracks without a star and tires.

To all-terrain vehicle got the opportunity to move on wheels, it was decided to use the following type of drive:

There was also an alternative solution regarding the wheel-tracked base:

Frame construction:

The bridge girders must be welded into the hull of the so-called "boat" and the middle hubs will be removable.
After all the calculations were completed, construction began:

With such a transmission, the minimum speed is 1.137 km / h, and the maximum, in turn, is 30.09 km / h. Theoretically thirty horse power Okovsky engine in this speed range will be able to tow the UAZ by its side on the asphalt. It is not known how the transmission will "look" at this, but theoretically there should be enough strength))

Welding "boat".
Front and rear slopes
Bottom 2mm.
The sides are 1mm.
The rest is galvanized 0.55mm.

With the width of the middle part of the all-terrain vehicle being 800mm and the width of the tracks of 450mm, the ground clearance is 200mm. This is quite enough - you can watch the video.

Video of the first tests:

In many villages, and even more so in remote areas, in order to get to the desired sites, special equipment is required. The situation is worse during rainy or frosty seasons. To increase their own mobility, many residents of such settlements prefer to create a caterpillar all-terrain vehicle with their own hands. This is due to the remoteness from large cities and the high cost of factory models.

A similar tracked mini-all-terrain vehicle is a single-seat transport, whose carrying capacity is about 200 kg. The width parameters of the future technology are calculated depending on the required stability parameters while driving. The power plant is applied from the old domestic cars and should give out 50 or more liters. with. Such parameters are enough for driving at a speed of 20-30 km / h. But off-road, when there is movement on swampy terrain, the average speed is 10-15 km / h.

The all-terrain vehicle has excellent cross-country ability in wetlands

Required spare parts and materials for the manufacture of the machine

Usually, homemade all-terrain vehicles on tracks consist of elements that you can buy or make yourself. So, when the unit is created from a walk-behind tractor, then the following elements are included in its design:

  1. The frame is in the form of the main load-bearing element, to which all nodes are attached.
  2. Rear axle for mounting rear wheels.
  3. Track belt as well as track tensioner.
  4. Control system.
  5. Fuel tank.
  6. The driver's seat, which is recommended to be protected from possible ingress of dirt on it while driving.
  7. A lighting system that allows you to move safely even at night.

It is recommended to equip such a transport with a reduction gear, as well as a forced cooling system. power plant... One air flow while driving at low speeds is not enough to maintain the proper thermal regime. The frame is installed between the front and rear axles using square tubes as a base.

This will stiffen the structure. At the same time, it is recommended to make the joining of the frame elements rigid so that a one-volume homemade tracked all-terrain vehicle is obtained.

One of the most crucial moments is the creation of a sketch of the future unit. On such drawings, it is required to clearly indicate the location of all mechanisms and assemblies as accurately as possible. The choice of parts (home-made or factory-made) is determined depending on their performance and the load to which they will be subjected. An installation removed from an old car (often domestic) is used as a power plant. If the unit is made small, then the power of the motorcycle engine will suffice.

ATV drawing

As for the undercarriage, it looks like rubber tracks, a special tensioning system, suspension and forks. In order to create the tracks themselves, old car tires are often used. A metal frame is used as the basis for the undercarriage. But to create a control system, you need to use ready-made elements borrowed from cars or motorcycles. Homemade swamp vehicles are equipped with a power system, where the entire fuel supply is stored in a special tank. Often it is gasoline or diesel, gas power plants are rarely used.

The process of creating homemade all-terrain vehicles with a tracked undercarriage structure begins with the installation of the body. This item must be highly durable and waterproof. The base is created rigid, for which steel pipes are used, which are able to withstand loads several times higher than those that arise during movement. After that, the installation of the tracks themselves is carried out. For this purpose, a common rubber sheet is used, from which an annular rubber is made. Further, special aluminum blades are attached to it from the outside. On the reverse side, limiters are mounted, having a step width not greater than the width of the wheels.

After that, the bridges are removed through special holes in the body. For protection, it is worth using rubber couplings. The tape itself is attached so that the leading front and rear wheels were between the restraints. Further, additional wheels are installed and fixed between the main ones. They are needed to maintain the tape.

Upon completion of all work, heavy-duty glass must be installed in the cab to prevent dirt from getting inside.

As individual elements, as well as parts of the structure, are created, it is recommended to check them for strength and performance. It is recommended to provide at least 5 times the safety factor level in order to increase the reliability of the future unit. As soon as the bench tests are completed, you can start testing the all-terrain vehicle in field conditions... This will allow you to evaluate the behavior of the transport.

Photos of the coolest homemade all-terrain vehicles

One of the popular models of light all-terrain vehicles is Karakat:

Also, all-terrain vehicles of the caterpillar type were created in other states and had the following appearance:

Another domestic homemade product is frame structure equipped with a gearbox, as well as disc brakes:

All-terrain vehicles excel in difficult road conditions

Minsk resident Boris Karavkin. And recently Yuri Pidgaetsky from Molodechno decided to build an interesting homemade all-terrain vehicle on caterpillar from "Muscovite" and Volkswagen. What came out of the symbiosis of components and assemblies of Soviet and German cars, read our material.

"Come to Molodechno, we have made a tracked all-terrain vehicle here" - such a message came to the editorial mail recently. The designer did not manage to send the photos, so until the very last moment we had no idea what we were going to shoot.

And when we drove up to Yuri's house, they just fell out of the sediment from his all-terrain vehicle. This is something incredible live! It seems that the car arrived in Molodechno straight from the set of films about zombies, the apocalypse or Mad Max.

Below - a caterpillar "cart", on top - a shortened body from "Moskvich-2141", painted in a military khaki color. Live car looks very unusual. This has never happened before in our "Autoexotics" section!

“I have been fond of homemade products since childhood, I went to the circles of model designers,” says Yuri Pidgaetsky. low pressure... And two and a half years ago I started making a tracked all-terrain vehicle. For what? I don't really know myself - it's just that my hands are always itching to do something like that ... "

Before the trip, we will study the technical component of the "monster". A car was made without drawings - by eye. A solid frame is assembled from shaped pipes, sheathed with tin. A shortened body of a "Muscovite" was later installed on it. Yuri says that he fiddled with him the most.

The radiator and stove are located at the front. There is still room under the hood for various little things. So the car has almost two trunks.

There is no back row of seats. Instead, there is a huge trunk, under which is hidden power unit and transmission. As you can see, the all-terrain vehicle turned out to be very practical.

The most interesting thing is hidden under the boot floor. Gasoline 1.8-liter engine from the old Volkswagen passat is almost in the middle, but unlike passenger car located not transversely, but longitudinally. Next comes the 5-speed gearbox from the same car with a welded differential.

From it - a kind of cardan to the rear "Zhiguli" bridge. Exhaust pipes brewed from scratch, fuel tank homemade.

Differential rear axle naturally free. The torque is transmitted to the rear rollers. They also have brake discs from the old Volkswagen Golf.

As you already understood, brakes are needed not only to stop the car, but also to control it. We pull on the right control lever - we act on the caliper of the right roller, as a result, the car turns to the right. We pull the left lever towards ourselves - we turn to the left. There is no brake pedal - to brake, you need to pull on both levers.

Yuri made a caterpillar from a conveyor belt and metal shaped tubes for a week and a half. Conventional automobile rollers are used as rollers. wheel disks... Each track has a tensioning mechanism. According to the craftsman, the suspension is made from what was - on each side there are three struts with springs and shock absorbers.

Interior elements are taken from the same "Muscovite". Everything works inside, including the radio and the stove. Conventionally, the number of seats can be defined as 2 + 1 - in the cabin, albeit in tight quarters, but three of us can accommodate. Gear shifting is reversed.

Now hold on to the chair - Yuri's all-terrain vehicle can swim! Everything is sealed inside - the "Muscovite" does not sink. True, so far there has not been enough courage for full-fledged water tests. The car drove into the lake, but held on to the bottom with the back of the caterpillar. The front of the all-terrain vehicle did not sink! In general, the car should float, but Yuri has no desire to fully launch it into the water - it's a pity to drown such a technique.

The armor is strong and our tanks are fast - we are going to test the equipment in the fields! By the way, the all-terrain vehicle has not yet been properly tested - Yuri drove it only a few times. So we, together with the designer, will probe its capabilities, positive and negative qualities.

But first you need to get into the car, and for this - remember the army days. You need to climb on a car just like in the army on an infantry fighting vehicle, that is, as you can, you climb.

First comment after our Instagram post: "Will the ATV roll forward with emergency braking?" We braked at low speeds - we didn't roll over. Still, despite the considerable height, the center of gravity is located low - where the engine, rollers and tracks are. Yuri developed before us maximum speed 60 km / h, slowed down, but not urgently - the car did not overturn. To brake strongly at high speed while there is no desire - first you need to install three-point belts and a roll cage. It seems that the car should not turn over, but in order to check this for sure, it is better to work on safety first. So, just in case.

You sit behind the wheel, ugh - with levers, very high. There has never been such a tall "Muscovite" in history! The cabin is very noisy while driving, but it cannot be said that this is a drawback. Noise enhances the emotion of driving. You really drive like in a tank.

I always dreamed of traveling on tracked vehicles, it's a pity I didn't manage to steer anything in the army. It's time to catch up!

The clutch and gas are just like in a normal car, nothing special. It is difficult to find the gears, the switching scheme is inverted, which blows up the brain, there are also problems with clarity, but you can choose any gear, because the car starts off at any speed, at least from third for sure. There is no "lowering" in the transmission, the lowered row in this car is already made by default, so in first gear you can climb at the speed of a turtle.

I turn on the gear (though I don’t know which one), abruptly let go of the clutch pedal and press the "gas" - the car slightly rears up and starts abruptly with a noise! To be honest, I don't even know how to describe emotions. This is something incredible! There is very little snow, there are no special obstacles, but from the ride on this "monster" you just want to scream with delight! A very unusual feeling. The engine is roaring, the tracks are pounding, my heart is bursting out of my chest - this is the most emotional test drive of my career! Words cannot describe how cool it is to ride this self-made caterpillar.

To turn, you need to put a lot of effort on the levers. But the maneuverability is not bad: we squeeze the "gas" to the floor, pull the left lever with all our strengths with both hands - the all-terrain vehicle starts turning the "dimes" in place! Moreover, homemade tracks do not fall off the rollers - the strength of the structure is felt.

Immediately I remember the famous obscene video about a warrant officer and tankers: "Once, with a turn, turned on the front - and went!"

Off-road performance? Ground clearance- 380 mm, no overhangs, but there are tracks. It is a pity, for some reason there was very little snow in Molodechno - it was not possible to check how the car drives through deep snow. But again, there is enough emotion without off-road obstacles. You just go - and your eyes are already on your forehead!

But we drove along the ditch - the all-terrain vehicle passes through it very well. But so far Yuri has no idea when the car will start to fall back. Therefore, they did not take large slides - the driver is simply afraid to turn the all-terrain vehicle over.

In theory, everything should be fine - the center of gravity is low. But in practice, you need to make a frame, belts - and even then try to feel the stability limit of the all-terrain vehicle. There is a feeling that he is capable of a lot, but so far it is simply scary to break him - so much work has been invested in the technique.

Finally, we still try to feel this edge again, but on the rise, the connection between the rollers and the engine is unexpectedly lost! The all-terrain vehicle rolls back - and remains on the ice, which is covered with cracks along the edges. An attempt to turn on the gear and move off leads nowhere. Only the grinding of metal is heard - the car does not drive. Have sailed!

It turned out that the cardan had torn. Moreover, he broke on the first test. However, you shouldn't even worry about it - Yuri already has a solution to the problem. Next cardan shaft will be so strong that it will withstand everything.

It is normal when something goes wrong with new technology. So far, only one has been found at the all-terrain vehicle weakness, there are no other "snot". And this is very good! The machine was built from scratch by one person, has not yet been tested - and only the drive breaks down. In the evening of the same day, the designer repaired the all-terrain vehicle and drove out of the ditch.

As a result - a complete delight. You are simply amazed at the talent of Yuri Pidgaetsky, who made such a car from scrap materials! He had some spare parts, he had to buy something - in the end, he spent about $ 800 on the construction. For this money, you can't even buy a frail ATV, but here you get a whole "monster" - an all-terrain vehicle on a caterpillar track. Bravo to its creator!

Once I tried to clean snow on an ATV.

Everything would have been fine, and the bucket knife worked properly, but the wheel grip on the snow and on the ice was clearly not enough. Even though studded tires from a car were used.

Therefore the ATV is on the tracks.

For a long time I studied the design of industrial hinged tracks installed instead of wheels, but in the end I came to the conclusion that it would be much easier to make a completely new tracked platform, especially since the ATV had an accident, as a result of which the frame was significantly deformed.

I bought the cheapest caterpillars - from Buran.

The so-called trolleys, drive and driven shafts are also from it. On the occasion, we managed to buy a serviceable gearbox from Oka for just 1000 rubles, complete with drives and brakes. All this later came in handy to create a workable all-terrain vehicle.

I welded the propulsion frames from rectangular pipes and connected them together using a frame, since the structure was originally made collapsible (photo 1).

The track tensioning mechanism is shown in photo 2.

The splined part of the drive shafts from the Buran was cut off and the splined part of the shafts from the Oka was welded to them (photo 5), thanks to which it was possible to use the native CV joints of this wonderful minicar (photo 4). The brake discs were also useful (photo 10).

I did the same with the front shafts in order to subsequently install the brakes on them.

I cut off a part of the gearbox casing to ensure free passage of the chain to its drive shaft (photo 7).

For the power plant and seat attachment, I welded a separate frame (photo 9). The brakes are shown in photo 10. As workers brake cylinders used hydraulic cylinders from the VAZ-2101 clutch (photo 11).

Looking ahead, I will explain why I installed the brakes on the front shafts, and not on the drive ones - the rear ones, which would be more logical.

The fact is that the all-terrain vehicle had to have a width of no more than 120 cm - this was due to some features of its operation on our site. But the width of the gearbox and the tracks themselves did not allow placing the brakes on the drive shafts without violating the above condition.

The differential turn itself is also not the most successful solution from a technical point of view, however, on low-power structures it is quite workable and quite reliable - the strength of the gearbox and caterpillar mechanisms for this design is enough even in excess.

During the execution of installation work, everything went into action. For example, from the steering bipods from "Oka" I made levers, which, when steering, put pressure on the rods of the brake cylinders (photo 12-15).

Fitting the engine took a little time (photo 16-17) .. Between the engine and the gearbox there is such a spacer adjustable in length, which helps to relieve the load from the mountings of these units (photo 18).

The fitting of the plumage and seat is shown in photo 19.

"Kengurin", aka the blade bracket, is welded from a square pipe (photo 20-23).

The presence of a gearbox allows you to use the all-terrain vehicle for both household needs and entertainment.

In the first or second gear, you get a tractor - unhurried, but very high-torque, capable of pushing a dump full of wet snow in front of it. On the third or fourth, transport for pokatushek.

The controls turned out to be very easy - even a child can handle maneuvers - and the all-terrain vehicle itself is very passable, because it leans on the tracks from the elongated Buran being twice as light as it.

Therefore, even the most fluffy snowdrifts are not afraid of him. The only thing left to finish is the fenders and full-length full-length footpegs, to which the hands cannot reach.

Now it is a favorite "toy" for children and adults in our company, and not only in winter (photo 24-25), but also in summer.
