The first generation Nissan X-Trail crossover was presented Japanese company in 2001, and it was based on the Nissan FF-S platform (on which Primera and Almera were previously created).

The car was produced until 2007, when it was replaced by a second generation model.

The "first" Nissan X-Trail is compact crossover with a five-seater cabin layout. The length of the car was 4510 mm, width - 1765 mm, height - 2625 mm, wheelbase - 2625 mm, and its ground clearance was equal to 200 mm.
When loaded, the "first X-Trail" weighed from 1390 to 1490 kg, depending on the configuration, engine, gearbox and transmission.

The first generation X-Trail offered two gasoline engine volume of 2.0 and 2.5 liters, issuing 140 and 165 Horse power respectively. There was also a 2.2-liter turbodiesel, the output of which was 136 "horses". The motors worked in tandem with a 5- or 6-speed "mechanics" and a 4-band "automatic", with a front or four-wheel drive.

An independent spring suspension was installed on the front and rear of the X-Trail T30. Ventilated disc brakes are used on the front wheels, and disc brakes on the rear wheels. Steering was complemented by an amplifier.

The first generation Nissan X-Trail crossover is well known to Russian motorists, as it was in good demand in our country. Of the advantages of the car, one can note an attractive and brutal appearance, overall reliability, good off-road qualities for SUV, roomy salon, confident behavior on the road, comfortable suspension, good dynamics and handling, maintainability and relatively affordable spare parts.
The disadvantages of the crossover include average quality. paintwork, the presence of unnecessary noise at high speeds, not too fast automatic transmission and uncomfortable seats.

We have already tested the new Nissan X-Trail of the third generation, but it was a gasoline crossover in a rich configuration. And what is interesting diesel option with 1.6 dCi nameplate and six-speed "mechanics"?

I am already over thirty, I have a higher education, I like to travel and have an active rest in nature. To fit into the portrait of a typical customer crossover nissan X-Trail I just miss a couple of kids and ... the required amount in the bank account. However, everything has its time. Another thing is, will the new X-Trail suit me in character, will I get along with it? After all, a car is also a full-fledged member of the family!

We meet by clothes

It would seem, why does the crossover need a cute face, because its trump cards are different - spaciousness, practicality and cross-country ability, after all, it is not a sports car, to play with the muscles of the sidewalls and wink with LED headlights to catch the views of others. Nevertheless, professional sellers claim that the first impulse from the buyer “to take or not to take”, like the first impression about a person, is formed in the first minutes, but what is there - seconds! - acquaintance with the car. Especially if an impressionable spouse is nearby. Another thing is that when entering a Nissan salon and seeing the front view of Qashqai and X-Trail side by side, she may ask with bewilderment: "Why did they put up two identical cars?" Then you should take it by the handle, walk around both cars together and explain: “Look, dear, they are only similar in front, and in the back - two completely different cars!”.

They are brothers, but not twins. They are related by common genes and some elements of the interior and exterior. And the point is not only in the general, new corporate style, but also in saving on the same details, which, however, are not as many as it might seem. Despite the fact that the X-Trail looks very similar to the Qashqai, it is worth taking a closer look and you can see that the headlights, hood and bumpers are different. Similar but not identical.

Another thing is that in the cabin they are painfully similar, and in the invisible areas there are probably many common elements. Moreover, it is possible to gain money (and time!) In this way at all stages - from design, modeling, testing and to production, which guarantees substantial savings on an industrial scale. However, the manufacturer will not dump and the optimization of production processes should not be expected to reduce the cost of new generations of familiar models. But the proven technology will be more reliable (in theory), and if you have several new Nissan in your family, then changing from one to another you will not have to get used to. But this is already for the adherents of the brand, many of whom are still grumbled unhappily: they say, the previous X-Trail (with the factory designation T31) had its own masculine face and a unique angular style, and the new X-Trail against the background of its predecessor was like a cute girl or slicked metrosexual.

But it's worth looking at the X-Trail in profile, walking around and appreciating the stern ... no, this is no longer a Qashqai, but a much more serious car. Let them have a common platform, but the X-Trail is not only longer than its younger brother by 263 mm (length 4640 mm), but its base has grown by 59 mm - up to 2705 mm. At the withers, the X-Trail surpasses the Qashqai by 120 mm at once: the height is 1710 or 1715 mm, depending on whether the car is with or without rails. And the increase in external dimensions here directly testifies to the spaciousness of the inner world. Let's take a look inside?

Is the inner world rich?

The simple answer to this question lies in the bundle: how much you put in, you get so much. We tested one of the most options-rich versions, but we'll talk about the equipment later, and now - about the impressions.

The former X-Trail greeted the driver with a solid console, which towered over a stone cliff, and was made mostly of hard plastic. Now, before the eyes and hands, the smooth curves of the front panel, soft plastic and lacquered black inserts, an elegant multifunctional steering wheel and rich multimedia capabilities Nissan system Connect 2.0. Between the wells of the tachometer and speedometer, with clearly traced numbers, there is a color screen on-board computer with nice and understandable graphics. In addition to the familiar functions of displaying mileage and fuel consumption, the distribution of torque between the axles and the response of blind spot monitoring systems are displayed here - conveniently!

As for ergonomics, my back and fifth point knew the chairs more comfortable, although on a long journey they showed no signs of discontent. To find fault with the lack of lateral support would be too subjective on my part - I have a rather specific, almost vertical position with a straight back. Another thing is that the range of adjustment of the steering wheel for the departure may seem insufficient to many, but the steering wheel does not overlap the instruments.

I know that the owners of the X-Trail of the previous generation, sitting down in the new one, immediately began to miss the convenient heated or cooled cup holders (depending on the climate control settings) at the racks windshield- there was a stylish feature. "Climatic" cup holders moved to the lodgment between the front seats and retained the climate control function, which can be turned off with a specially provided slider. You can complain that you saved on automatic mode keys of passenger windows, and the fact that they are not highlighted on the driver's door card is made on purpose so that the driver does not get lost in the lights and in the dark can quickly find "his" key.

But at the back, I traditionally complain only about the lack of comfortable door handles for a natural grip, for which it is convenient to hold on to the road. The rest is space and comfort! The separate parts of the sofa move back and forth along the slide, the angle of the backrest is adjustable, the floor is almost flat under the feet, there is plenty of legroom, and above the head there is a sliding panoramic roof, albeit optional.

There is enough space for luggage, albeit not as much as before: the volume of the trunk varies from 497 to 1585 liters, and the transformation is even wider. In general, a trunk with an additional shelf that can be conveniently fixed at several levels, and a multi-section compartment in the underground have been a feature of the model since the first generation. A very handy thing, if not for one "but": as today I remember the presentation of the second generation X-Trail and the rumble of an empty "pencil case" in the trunk during travels on a country road. Is the new X-Trail still on our roads?

On a walk

When running, the diesel is quiet and almost does not give itself out, even with an increase in revs, associations with agricultural machinery do not come to mind. Passenger diesel engines have been cultivated to such an extent that they are given out only by a truncated tachometer scale and a narrow (for now?) Torque range. I was only gnawed by doubts that the compact 1.6 dCi turbodiesel would not pull a large crossover weighing over two tons to a decent level of dynamics and ... I was wrong!

Let 130 hp the figure is not impressive, but the moment under the hood could be generated as much as 320 Nm, against two hundred for the two-liter gasoline version. And all these "Newton meters" are available already at 1750 rpm and it doesn't matter that after 3000 rpm the motor is "blown away" and you have to switch higher. This is not a complicated matter and even interesting: the gears change easily and pleasantly, the lever moves like clockwork and you can literally wield it with your fingertips. Apparently, the designers initially calculated the mechanism for delicate female hands, so that, God forbid, they would not damage the manicure.

The clutch drive is also caring, allowing you to easily get under way without touching the accelerator pedal, pulling the car in traffic jams simply by releasing the left pedal. In general, it is easy to make friends with such "mechanics" even in heavy city traffic. And the high-torque turbodiesel allows you to confidently maneuver even in heavy traffic, keeps a stiff upper lip on the track and is content with low: my fuel consumption varied from 6 to 7 l / 100 km, depending on the degree of aggressiveness of working with the gas pedal.

Another interesting observation: I moved to the X-Trail along with fresh impressions from the new Kashkai and practically did not feel the difference not only in the workplace, but also in behavior. The new X-Trail feels almost as light and compact on the move as the Qashqai - nimble and agile. The larger base makes it more stable at high speeds and less susceptible to road bumps. If the Qashqai unpleasantly surprised me with the stiffness of the suspension (albeit in exchange for great handling), then the diesel X-Trail justifiably shook at railway crossings and dutifully swallowed larger holes, giving a driving pleasure comparable to the youngest. I only disliked his behavior on the paving stones in the government quarter, but only the "servants of the people" can move there comfortably in expensive air-suspension limousines.

On the test "X-Trail" I still found snow and decided to test its off-road capabilities off the banks of the Dnieper. A dirt path, a small track, soft snow cover, under which treacherous sand lurks. All this Nissan and I overcame effortlessly by automatically distributing torque between the axles. The only thing that my mechanical friend did not like was the diagonal suspension: in fact, the lightweight short-travel suspension quickly surrendered, hanging the rear right wheel, which was spinning helplessly in the air. Will I leave? Roar, roar ... and "my" X-Trail reluctantly climbed a small mound. The same exercise with the transmission switched to 4X4 Lock mode was performed by the crossover from the first approach and after stopping at the top point. True, getting out of the car for a couple of shots, I opened the trunk, but the automatic closer did not want to slam it back: due to the lack of body rigidity, the door shifted slightly relative to the opening and closed only on the second attempt. Okay, it doesn't matter - let's go.

Carried away by shooting and experimenting with different transmission modes, I drove into a virgin soil that seemed safe to me, but seemingly harmless snow covered the loose sand. It was getting dark. I did not have a paddle, and there were no rescuers passing by. It’s good that I didn’t have time to drive and kept my cool so as not to gas, digging even deeper. Raked out some snow and sand from under the wheels and began to swing to try to leave: first-back, first-back, first-back - and hurray, we escaped from the snow-sand captivity! I don’t know I would have got this number on a car with a variator, but it’s unlikely that I would have left there without assistance on front wheel drive... But the two-pedal diesel X-Trail is not sold with all-wheel drive!

Well, let's summarize?

Is it worth overpaying about 10% for the X-Trail in comparison with the similarly equipped Qashqai? If you need more space for passengers and luggage, then definitely yes. If you know how to handle mechanical box programs and love to get out into nature - definitely worth it. After all, Qashqai cannot be ordered with diesel engine, four-wheel drive and "mechanics" (diesel for Kashkai is offered only with a CVT variator and front-wheel drive), and it is this combination that allows an experienced driver to get the farthest on the off-road. And the main thing is to get out! And I would not dissuade beginners from the "mechanics", given how easily it allows you to change gears. At the very least, you should order a trial test from your nearest Nissan dealer to see for yourself.

And if you are going to acquire a new car in the near future, then you should not postpone: until the end of April, Nissan X-Trail can be bought with a solid discount of 47,000 UAH. That is, the base X-Trail 2.0 (144 hp) in the XE configuration will cost UAH 644,140. True, for a car with a CVT, you will have to pay a hundred thousand more (745 190 UAH), but in addition to the CVT, a solid set of equipment for the Comfort version will appear. And I consider this complete set to be optimal. Judge for yourself, there will already be dual-zone climate control, fog lights, a keyless entry system, parking sensors, rain and light sensors, an electric trunk and folding mirrors, covered in leather steering wheel and gear lever, auto-dimming interior mirror and a more advanced six-speaker audio system.

Of course, Nissan X-Trail can also be front-wheel drive, but unlike the "relative" in the person Nissan Qashqai, there are very few single-drive cars. And the all-wheel drive with the electromagnetic clutch that has already become familiar to Japanese and Asian cars in the rear axle drive is made as simple and quite efficient as possible. It is enough to overcome small obstacles, although it does not tolerate prolonged slippage and pulling on heavy ground. After a run of 50-70 thousand kilometers, the clutch usually requires flushing and bulkheads, otherwise by the end of the same run, you can expect damage to the electromagnet, and possibly the bearings due to corrosion, and this will cost at least 50 thousand rubles for a new clutch and bearings. and the work is not worth a penny.

The clutch together with the main gear should be opened and cleaned immediately after overcoming deep fords: the breather often lets water through. On the mechanical side, there are a minimum of complaints about the transmission. But you still have to do something.

On running machines, the CV joints should be carefully checked. And after one and a half hundred thousand mileage, it is worth preemptively renewing the lubricant in the hinges, without waiting for them to overheat and the appearance of noise.

The propeller shaft after the same one and a half to two hundred thousand mileage will require replacing the intermediate support, and in the case of severe operating conditions - and crosses, since it is not original parts are inexpensive.

The transfer case, which is really just a bevel gear, holds up well. If you change the oil and do not overload, then there are no particular problems with it. With a gasoline 280-horsepower turbo engine, it can be "rolled up", and in all other cases, damage to shafts and bearings is associated with untimely maintenance, leaks and water ingress into the mechanism or imbalance cardan shaft... By the way, gearboxes from cars before and after restyling are conditionally compatible: the housings differ minimally, but when replacing, you may need to work with a grinder.

The mechanism for selecting the gears of manual transmissions with age greatly loses in selectivity due to the stretching of the cables and the loosening of the ball joint of the lever. And the dual-mass flywheel has a poorly predictable resource. It is good that, if desired, it is possible to change the clutch to a conventional damper one.

After 200 thousand mileage, you can expect a deterioration in the inclusion of the third-fourth gear due to aging synchronizers, and for those who like to drive with a noticeably lower mileage, the synchronizer of the second gear often suffers. At this, with careful maintenance and maintaining the oil level, it all ends, but remember that in the manual transmission it is also necessary to change the oil sometimes.

Most of the cars are equipped with automatic transmission. Here is installed a box of a subsidiary of Nissan - Jatco model RE4F04B, which is rightfully considered one of the most successful automatic transmissions of its time. True, there are only four steps, and by the middle of the 2000s it was already morally outdated, but on the other hand it is reliable and provides good dynamics and comfort. I would say that it is eternal, but exploitation in Russia casts doubt on the reliability of anything.


Most of the drivers with a mileage of 250 thousand kilometers will require replacement of the blocking lining of the gas turbine engine. But there are always chances that the run was wound up or a "racer" drove, which made the box literally "burn at work".

Twitching or slipping in third or fourth gears is usually the fault of the brake band. She is here and aging in the first place, and is very sensitive to oil contamination: it starts to work harshly.


A set of solenoids can fail ahead of time due to excessive pollution or overheating, and the automatic transmission selector often causes a transition to emergency mode.

All other repairs are the consequences of either a very high mileage, or operation on dirty oil with overheating. The box comes up completely only when half of the clutches "die", or pieces of metal have destroyed the planetary gear or valve body. This is fine, unless you bought a "slightly twitching" box. She is usually already a complete "corpse" inside, so almost everything will have to be changed. However, this is the fate of almost all reliable technology: there will always be someone who will purposefully look for something that can be “killed” for a long time, and that will not break from his style of handling equipment at once.

Frequent oil changes, an additional radiator and an external filter are recommended but not required.

Motors

Nissan X-Trail was equipped mainly with two engines: gasoline engines of 2.0 and 2.5 liters of the QR20DE and QR25DE series. Supercharged motors of the SR20VET series (2 liters and 280 forces) and a 2.2 liter diesel engine of the YD22DDTi series are quite rare. We have such motors - exotic. I can only say that the Nissan turbo engines of this generation are considered very successful, but diesel motors of our own design - capricious in terms of fuel equipment and very unhurried even in the DCi version, although quite strong.


The common difficulties of Nissan engines on the X-Trail are rather weak radiators, unstable pressure in the cooling system due to an unsuccessful plug, often leaking system pipes, somewhat capricious ignition coils and an intake system with weak corrugations, prone to depressurization.

Of the most dangerous troubles for the engine and the car, I will name the loss of tightness of the gas line under the hood in the place of the quick-detachable connection: the seal ring "dubs", and little by little leaks appear. The second is weak and corrosive spring clamps on almost all elements of the cooling system, which over time can simply fall apart. On older cars operating in the northern regions, after 5-6 years, engine mountings are severely affected.

Almost all aging problems begin to manifest themselves after 150,000 mileage. On this run, the chances of overheating and simple control system failures increase dramatically. All this does not in the best way affect the condition of the motors, especially when operating in our northern regions. Winter starts at a temperature of -30-35 degrees are quite affordable for these motors, but the chances of ruining the motor increase dramatically, which is reflected in the failure statistics.


The naturally aspirated 2.0 and 2.5 liter petrol engines are close cousins, although the degree of their unification should not be overestimated. They differ in the cylinder block, the arrangement of a number of components, intake, camshafts and auxiliary systems.

The resource of a larger engine is in fact less than a two-liter one. Affected by a greater tendency to overheating and a higher load on the piston and crankshaft. But in any case, it all depends on the style of operation. When changing the oil at least once every 10 thousand, if the engine is not raped by cold starts all winter, and in the summer it is not overheated in endless traffic jams and trips through the sands, a two-liter engine will start to eat oil with a mileage of 250-280 thousand kilometers, and the appetite will grow steadily due to wear piston group... If you do not miss the oil level, and replace the catalyst with a European metal one or remove it altogether, then the engine will almost certainly last up to 350-400 thousand mileage, which for such a simple and cheap design is an undoubted indicator of success.
