On both sides of the mirror

The creators of "Mitsubishi" did not even hide that they were doing their "active and smart" (this is how the ASX abbreviation is revealed) crossover directly in opposition to the "Qashqai". However, if you judge solely by the appearance of these two representatives of the "parquet" family, then you would not immediately think that there can be much in common between them. The young "Mitsubishi" looks by no means an example angrier: he, like a hungry perch, opened a huge greedy mouth, as if trying to swallow prey larger than himself. At the same time, Nissan, who knows its own worth, prefers not to splash out its emotions on those around it: its gaze is serious, cold and restrained. And he and the other, without a doubt, are the most prominent representatives of the world of compact crossovers and certainly will not get lost in the motley car crowd - but that's not the point. One has only to get to know each of them better, as it immediately becomes clear: their differences are exclusively physiognomic. In fact, both are surprisingly similar in price, armed with similar power in the base. gasoline engines"One and six", which in turn are combined only with a manual transmission and front-wheel drive. For more demanding and wealthy users, ASX and Qashqai are ready to offer 2-liter engines, a 4 x 4 transmission and a variator. Is it worth mentioning that in this case, too, we will not find a significant difference in equipment? If so, it's time to move on and look for differences in the salons.

About politeness and accuracy

There is much less expression inside the ASX than in its appearance. However, quite traditional techniques in interior decoration, typical of European cars rather than Japanese ones, generally make a good impression. I would especially like to praise the strict front panel, skillfully refined with soft plastic overlays. Stylish devices with white-moon illumination and a talented multimedia system raise the mood. A seat with an exhaustive range of settings and a steering wheel adjustable for reach and angle allow you to choose a comfortable fit for the driver. Nevertheless, a few offensive ergonomic errors were found. In the menu of the head unit "Rockford-Fosgate" you can't figure it out without a glass;

The seat heating buttons in the narrow "blind" place between the seat cushions and the central tunnel reliably sniffed only as an offended brownie. Finally, the driver's seat allows itself to play in the sled under load. Why are you, brother of Mitsubishi, so sloppy?

The Nissan is much more comfortable. "Qashqai" from birth was well cut and tightly sewn. And Japanese interior designers have successfully eliminated small jambs during last year's restyling. So, for example, the bright orange eye of the on-board computer, which lived between the speedometer and the tachometer, gave way to a much more readable rectangular display. The multimedia system screen protruding from the central panel showed modesty and slid down, where it looks much more appropriate. If the designers also installed the front seats a little lower so that the tall driver and passenger would not rest their gaze on the cut of the stream, it would be absolutely super.

According to physical data

Already in the next round, where we evaluate the roominess, ASX took revenge, for which it should have been grateful to another Mitsu: Outlander-XL shared an impressive wheelbase with a-es-X. As it turned out, this footage provides quite comfortable seating on the sofa for two significant persons with a height of 185 cm - even if the front seats are pushed back all the way. True, three well-fed personalities will no longer be so at ease, but for a compact SUV this is quite normal.

But "Qashqai" cannot boast of such hospitality. His sofa, although not inferior in distance from the pillow to the roof, is 5 cm narrower. But, most importantly, due to the fact that the wheelbase of the Nissan is 4 cm shorter, there is noticeably less legroom for the rear passengers. However, thanks also to the fact that the knees of the occupants of the second row are practically free from contact with the backs of the front seats.

Nothing to be proud of

No matter how hard we tried to stuff a pair of our large travel suitcases into the short ASX trunk, ingeniously folding various combinations of them, there was still enough space for only one. Moreover, the replacement of a full-fledged "spare wheel", which occupied a fair amount of space in the hold, with a "dokatka" would hardly have any noticeable effect on the suitcase capacity, because the trunk would not have become longer from this, as you know.

But for Qashqai, the downsizing of the spare wheel that happened during the restyling was clearly beneficial: from now on, suitcases can travel together in its trunk - tightly pressed against each other, of course, but still in cramped quarters, but not offended.

Acute variator failure

Spurred properly, one hundred and fifty "horses" of the 2-liter engine fill the ASX's cabin with a loud whinny. The car emits a fair buzz, but is in no hurry to gallop forward, as if stuck in this loud sound. This is the peculiarity of the Mitsubishi V-belt variator, which openly sabotages intensive rebuilding in the city and fast overtaking on the highway. The only thing that can somehow help out is the pseudo-handed mode of the box. At the command of the paddle shifters, the variator quickly changes the steps, and they, in turn, allow you to keep the engine in good shape and accelerate faster. But it's one thing to play gear for pleasure, and quite another to do it under duress.

At Nissan, it should be noted that a variator also works in the transmission, assisting the 2-liter engine, which develops 9 hp. with. smaller. However, even without additional stimulation, the "Nissan" CVT is much more responsive to gas. Of course, there is no need to talk about an incendiary sporting character. And nevertheless, with a parallel start, he is already a hundred meters ahead of his opponent by the whole body.

As for the brakes, here both delighted with reliable and easily controlled deceleration.

Diligence grades

The handling of the "Nissan" seemed nicer to us. Let it steer not as fiery and not as exemplary as "Kuga" or "Tiguan", but it does not give any reasons for disappointment. "Qashqai" confidently keeps on a high-speed arc, not roaming or swaying in a rut, willingly dives into slow turns. After restyling in the steering, "synthetics" have noticeably decreased, and now the effort on the "steering wheel" clearly informs about the angles of rotation of the front wheels.

Mitsubishi lacks composure - literally in everything. As not the most diligent student, he seemed to grasp the essence of the subject, but did not bother himself with attention to detail. When cornering, the car rolls a lot, and with increasing speed it starts to scour. In addition, the ASX is noticeably nervous when it gets into an asphalt track, and is quite painful to react to side winds. This behavior is very annoying on a long trip - especially since the uninformative steering wheel does not allow you to intuitively set the car on the right path.

Not only on asphalt

For compact SUVs, whose main habitat is the city and its well-groomed surroundings, the main, in our opinion, off-road weapon is a decent ground clearance, which allows, if necessary, to deftly climb curbs. And it should be noted that ASX and Qashqai cope with this task brilliantly. Nevertheless, both have a good arsenal for off-tarmac riding. There are three modes in the Mitsubishi and Nissan handouts: front-wheel drive, automatic full (when the front wheels slip, the electronically controlled clutch connects the rear) and four-wheel drive with forced interaxle blocking... For traveling on a muddy dirt road to the dacha, this is quite enough. However, keep in mind that in deep snow or on the beach sand, clutches that are not designed for heavy work quickly overheat, turning the cars into front-wheel drive, and the suspension will not last long with intensive driving over bumps.

Two different stories

By the end of our testing, we concluded that the ASX values comfort just as much as we do. Mitsubishi is very fond of ideal roads, calm drivers, excellent summer tires... Smoothly swaying, he gladly drives through undulating sections of asphalt, but as soon as good road replaced by a coating with foulbrood, the ASX begins to hysteria: it twitches nervously at the seams and cracks, and on potholes with sharp edges the suspension frankly fails, barely softening the hard blows. Soundproofing is not doing too well with its service. One has only to cheer up the engine by turning the crankshaft over 3000 rpm, and the interior is filled with a mournful howl, in unison with which, even at city speeds, they tighten their mournful "Y!" tires.

The last not the most pleasant circumstance, at first we were ready to write off the winter studded tires "Nokian-Hakkapeliitta-5". However, as it turned out later, they were only partly to blame for creating an atmosphere of discomfort in the ASX, because exactly the same tires on the Qashqai behave noticeably quieter. And the "cat" engine, although not silent, still does not allow itself to switch to raised tones. Finally, the Nissan suspension is much more effective in dealing with the defects of our roads: the car resiliently runs through small pits and cracks. However, it is still not worth to blame indiscriminately: deep ruts of the short-stroke "Kashkaya" suspension are too tough.

It would be better all at once

To date, the ASX has only crashed on Australian ANCAP crash tests. The car, equipped with seven airbags, ABS and ESP, received an excellent rating from overseas experts. Alas, not all Russian modifications of Mitsubishi are capable of boasting the same full-fledged arsenal of protective equipment. The dynamic stabilization system on cars with a 1.6-liter engine is not provided at all, moreover, regardless of installed engine the corresponding basic configurations severely limit the number of available airbags: two - and a point. Want more air bags? Choose the more expensive versions with additional options - it doesn't matter if you need them or not.

We also caught the inventors of the Russian complete sets "Kashkaya" of stinginess. On the 1.6-liter versions, the ESP is not available for any price range. However, the rest of the "Nissan" is great. In the EuroNCAP tests, he honestly earned five stars, and he already has 6 airbags in the database.

More expensive does not mean better

The situation with the Mitsubishi configurations is very similar to the episode of the film "Deja Vu" about meatballs with rice and cutlets with potatoes. Freedom of choice is not about ASX. If you want four-wheel drive, pay for a 2-liter engine and a CVT. If you choose a 1.8 liter engine, then be so kind as to be content with a variator and drive only to the front wheels. And if you want a car "on hand", then a mono-drive version with a basic 117-horsepower engine is intended for you. Everything seems to be extremely simple, but rather stupid. Therefore, we would not even consider copies with a 1.8-liter unit: they cost from 879 to 999 thousand, but at the same time they do not go at all - acceleration to hundreds extends within 13.1 seconds.

The optimal, in our opinion, option is manual "one and six" in the "Intense" configuration. Such a car has air conditioning, power windows and mirrors, an MP3 radio tape recorder, heated front seats, alloy wheels, "Foglights", a leather-trimmed steering wheel - this is quite a decent set for 779 thousand. If you are considering a Moscow-mirror ASX with a CVT, then in this case it would be reasonable to pay extra for all-wheel drive. Yes, a decent copy performed by Instayl will cost 1,129,000 rubles, but you cannot achieve acceptable dynamics from Mitsubishi with ACP in any other way.

In "Kashkaya", the base motor is also combined only with front-wheel drive and a manual gearbox, and in the arsenal there are not three, but only two motors, however, "Nissan" gives wider opportunities for choice. The cheapest 1.6-liter version of the XE for 753 thousand is already well equipped: 6 pillows, ABS, air conditioning, "music" with "Bluetooth", electric windows and mirrors, heated seats. Want something livelier, but don't need four-wheel drive? Voila - a two-liter "on hand" plus climate control, alloy wheels, leather steering wheel for 904,000 rubles. Convenience in the form of a variator is estimated at 40,000, and all-wheel drive at 99,000 rubles. Thus, "Qashqai-2,0-CVT-4WD" with decent equipment can be purchased for 1,043,000 rubles - 86,000 cheaper than ASX. The difference, you see, is considerable.

According to dealer prices for MOT maintenance of "Nissan" for 60,000 km will cost 11 thousand rubles more than the owner of "Mitsubishi" - 60,000 against 49,000 rubles. However, we still awarded the victory to "Qashqai", which offered a more meaningful basic version for reasonable money and provided the best choice among the possible options.

WE HAVE DECIDED:

To be honest, the results of the fight surprised us a lot. Qashqai won with a serious advantage. Meanwhile, "Nissan", if you think about it, does not have any special supernatural qualities that cannot be found in other cars! Well cute, with high quality, comfortable salon, adequate dynamics and controllability - yes. And although not a single detail in it evokes childish delight, with all this "Nissan" behaves extremely politely, absolutely correctly, and thus quite easily achieves your location.

Despite the fact that the choice between Mitsubishi ASX and Nissan qashqai obvious, no choice. We are, as always, deceived ... Recently, they only asked me: which is better - Mitsubishi ASX or Nissan Qashqai? I have heard this question so many times that it’s somehow embarrassing that it doesn’t interest me at all.

I would never, under any circumstances, choose between these models. Yes, I understand that they are very close in all respects - from the volume of the cup holders to the softness of the head restraints. I know about the same engines and variators. Acceleration, maximum speed, power, type of all-wheel drive - everything is the same. But the idea of comparing and buying such crossovers can only occur to a robot. A reasonable person understands that such cars are created with one purpose - to use it impudently.

Qashqai on the go gives the impression of a harmoniously tuned "SUV". Does not require addiction

On the pavement Mitsubishi lacks the composure of the suspension and steering

Economist John Galbraith wrote in his book The Prosperity Society: “You cannot advocate production as a means of satisfying needs if that production creates new needs. Production only fills the void that it itself creates. It is the process of satisfying needs that generates new needs. The one who insists on the importance of production for satisfying needs is none other than the observer praising the squirrel for its efforts to overtake the wheel that it itself spins. "

Take off your stockings

In the maximum configuration, these toys cost about 1,200,000 rubles. I would go to a VW or Mazda dealer and get an Amarok or BT-50 for the same money. The pickup is also mostly pointless, but it is the real Thing. In which case, in the back, briefly fasten a coaxial anti-aircraft machine gun and bring down enemy aircraft on the outskirts of Moscow. Is this not a real man's business? And Mitsubishi ASX and Nissan Qashqai are only suitable for transporting smooth-haired dogs or bald Sphynx cats and rush scattered at the sight of the BMW X5. Well, of course, unlike the same pickups, they are convenient to park in the city, they do not have a continuous bridge and an ever-empty, bouncing body in the back, but the image, the image! For the modern urban man, he is more important than courage, muscles and potency combined.

The Qashqai multimedia screen is shamefully small, and the climate control is inconvenient

The ergonomics of the Mitsubishi's front panel are noticeably better than those of Nissan - more convenient and understandable

FIGHTER AND POT
... Nevertheless, if you choose by outward appearance, then Mitsubishi ASX is much cooler, fresher, more colorful. Because "Mitsu" was copied from a combat fighter, and "Qashqai" - from a flower bed. However, the exterior is a matter of taste. Unlike the interior, here you can at least appreciate the quality and ergonomics. But in our case, sitting in the driver's seat, feeling the trim and examining the front panel, you can’t identify a clear favorite. The materials of both rivals are equally good. There is a slight difference in the softness of the plastics, but ... who will fully experience it? I deliberately went to a couple of dozen forums of motorists, where the topic "Mitsubishi ASX vs Nissan Qashqai" is discussed in conveyor mode. Even those people who have compared the insides of competitors live are confused in the readings.

- In the rear seats, two cup holders for alcoholic friends

- Rear seats are slightly roomier than the rival

The only undisputed fact about the front panel belongs to the realm of ergonomics rather than quality. The ASX has a noticeably larger multimedia screen. It is much more convenient to use it, especially if you have a rear view camera. In addition, Mitsubishi has a clearer climate control algorithm. The good old three kruglyasha responsible for temperature, flow strength and direction. The smart guys from Nissan have experimented a lot, and now the Qashqai driver has to nervously rush about on the go, studying a set of air conditioning buttons classified by the designers. But this is exactly what you will not read on the forums.

DRUNK FIGHT

Nissan is much better on the go. It is more comfortable, more adequate, and clearer. A diligent kid. In spite of him, Mitsubishi behaves like a truant and slob. Qashqai, on the one hand, is soft, on the other - it keeps a straight line well and accelerates briskly. It is also good for a relaxed ride under the "Relax FM" radio, and a vigorous rock-and-roll run along the ring road, and even a techno-pull in bends. You quickly get used to it, because over the years of the model's release, the designers managed to sharpen its control "for a person". In general, the concept of the Renault-Nissan group consists in this. Mitsubishi is initially more hooligan. All these victories at the "Dakar" are not in vain. As a result, they also sharpen the female crossover under the unbridled drive in the sands of Africa. This is very confusing at first. Especially after Qashqai. It seems like you drove a Nissan, having established a complete understanding with technology. You and Qashqai are like ballroom dance partners. With ASX, it's better to forget about this experience, with it you feel as if you were going to a fight in the neighboring yard with a friend as a child. Both of you are a little on edge, and one of you (most likely you) is afraid to get in the snout.

The boot volume is 5 liters less than the competitor. These are the little things

ASX trunk - 415 liters. Good volume for a compact crossover

OFF ROAD DO NOT FORGET
But a person quickly gets used to everything. And soon you stop noticing that the Mitsubishi steering wheel is not informative enough, that the engine and CVT are screaming rather than accelerating, that the body rolls heavily in corners, and the suspension does not provide the proper compromise between comfort and handling. You start to forget how good it was with Nissan. What exemplary directional stability he demonstrated, what sparkling dynamics he gave in sport mode variator! And such trifles as the convenience of the trunk (in Qashqai it is much better), generally go deep into the subconscious.

THE CHOICE IS OBVIOUS

The answer to the question "What to choose?" is obvious to me. There is little that the ASX can be proud of - striking looks, a large multimedia screen, a slightly more spacious rear row. However, for many, this combination of advantages will be irresistible. However, both crossovers will only provide temporary satisfaction. Then the consumer society will inflate in you the desire to take something faster, more comfortable, more spacious. And if your income grows, you end up buying a full-size premium crossover - but just to realize that there is nowhere else to go, nothing to dream of, and many years ago you really had to buy a pickup.

CAUTION TECHNICAL DETAILS
Both tested cars are typical representatives of their class. Load-bearing body, independent suspensions, CVT transmission without a reduction gear and the absence of mechanical locks of cross-axle differentials. Weight and geometric dimensions are also very close. Even the tire size and model were identical in the test. The ASX has a slightly longer front overhang, while the Qashqai has a slightly longer rear overhang. But Mitsubishi engineers did not work enough with the settings of the electronic assistants, which caused the loss in cross-country ability. All the difference in handling and cross-country ability is associated only with the nuances of fine-tuning the machines.

Have Mitsubishi outlander the essence is different. Restyling was performed, and now the car does not have a large radiator grille and aggressive headlights, the sharp broken edges of the body have sunk into oblivion. Now, in the stream of cars, he looks like such a respectable father of a family. Powerful, good-natured, but fat from a quiet life. Although this is only an illusion. The dimensions of the car remained the same. And some roundness, and as a result, improved aerodynamics, was only beneficial - noise decreased, appetite became more modest.

Let's go to the salon

Nissan designers did their best. The quality of materials, compared to the previous modification, has clearly improved. Navigation and multimedia units are now located in the center console. The screen is very informative, which is freely located between the speedometer and tachometer. It even reflects the scheme of the distribution of thrust between the axles. Ergonomics on top. And, yes, and much more, you can directly from the steering wheel. It is both convenient and there is no need to be distracted from the road. By the way, the radio tape recorder has acquired an advanced seven-inch screen.

Nissan Qashqai is equipped with... It includes as many as seven systems. Here's just how it will all work in Russia - big question... Our markings are often missing or applied incorrectly, and no monitoring of blind spots will save you from a major or an insolent "statesman". Although, let it be, it may still come in handy.

Future Nissan owners Qashqai will surely appreciate the transparent roof. Not everyone likes hatches, so this decision can only be welcomed. The seats are comfortable, lateral support is normal. The range of adjustments is also not satisfactory. Nissan designers - you are great! When choosing a Nissan Qashqai or Mitsubishi Outlander, your efforts will undoubtedly be appreciated.

The internal content of the Mitsubishi Outlander is fully consistent. No fun colors, no glamor. The dark leather interior looks even a little gloomy. But solid! You can't take that away. The front lacquered panel is downright an example of laconicism. A scattering of buttons completely replaces the multifunctional screen, only the emergency gang is placed on a separate toggle switch. Though electronic systems here is no less than in a car from Nissan. Severity is the leitmotif of the Mitsubishi Outlander interior.

Adjustment range front seat will be enough even for a basketball player. The steering wheel is now adjustable in both height and reach. What the Mitsubishi Outlander has in abundance is space. It is convenient not only for the driver, passengers in the back row of seats will also not feel like poor relatives. A large trunk, coupled with a convenient rear seat folding system, will allow. Mitsubishi engineers have made a great all-round vehicle.

Power units and transmission

There are three engines available for the Nissan Qashqai. The most "groovy" of them is a 115-horsepower turbocharged engine with a volume of 1.2 liters. The two-liter version is familiar to many from Renault models and is nothing special. Since this Nissan model is actively sold in Europe, there is also a diesel power unit... It produces 130 "horses" at 1.6 liters of volume. , then you have to choose between a six-speed manual transmission and a variator.

Mitsubishi Outlander is equipped with more powerful ones. The weakest of them gives out "on the mountain" 146 Horse power(volume 2 liters). Fans of "what is more powerful" are available a 2.4-liter engine (167 hp). But choosing a gearbox will not work - only a variator. Power is a good argument in the debate about which is better - Qashqai or Outlander.

Driving qualities

Still, the Qashqai is more of a city car. Here he is good. The new generation variator allows you to keep up with other cars at traffic lights, easily "swallow" road irregularities. However, Nissan showed itself quite well on the track. The perfectly tuned helps him in this. But as for the off-road ... Of course, it will reach the dacha along the Qashqai country road, but that's all. Although no one demands more from him. After all, this is a "SUV", not a full-fledged SUV.

Mitsubishi Outlander is in no way lagging behind a competitor. Well tuned steering confidently holds the road, the modernized (and reinforced) suspension is not afraid of bumps and bumps. But according to off-road qualities Outlander is clearly ahead of Qashqai, and the wealth of drive adjustments is also evident.

So, Nissan Qashqai is different:

  • good looks;
  • cheerful modern salon;
  • good choice of engines;
  • modernized variator.

  • strict lines of the body;

  • powerful engines;
  • good off-road capabilities.

Test Drive Mitsubishi car Outlander:

Let's sum up

Our task was not only to compare Outlander and Qashqai, but also to help potential buyers in choosing one of them. Both models proved to be very worthy. Both cars would be a good buy. However, in our opinion, Nissan is more suitable for active young citizens (or women). And respectable, businesslike men with an economic streak are Mitsubishi's clients.

While the choice between the Mitsubishi ASX and the Nissan Qashqai is clear, there is no choice. We are, as always, deceived ... It is impossible to forget only the difference in cross-country ability. On our test, the ASX failed the off-road discipline. And most likely he did it on purpose, because of his terrible nature. He could not climb a simple ice slide, which Nissan rolled calmly, I would say, even with some contempt for a competitor. Since the rivals have a similar all-wheel drive design, Mitsubishi programmers just have to work hard on the settings of the electronic assistants. Despite the urban purpose of the crossover, it cannot be completely deprived of its cross-country ability.

Crossovers are gaining popularity every year. In this article, we will consider which is better: Nissan X-Trail or Mitsubishi Outlander. Both Japanese companies are giants in the car market, and the rivalry between these models has been going on for over 15 years.

First Nissan x trail was released in 2000 and Mitsubishi outlander- in 2001. Over the years, several modifications have been made to each model. In 2014-2015. on Russian market new versions of the crossovers loved by customers have appeared. Nissan produced completely new car, and Mitsubishi updated the already existing third generation of the crossover family.

Let's compare the last generations of both legends and find out which one is better.

Prices and configuration

The first thing a potential buyer looks at when choosing a car is its price tag. According to this parameter, the picture looks very interesting! At the time of release updated versions in 2015, Outlander clearly won in value. The price tag of its latest version with a 2.4 liter engine. in the maximum configuration was 1,820,000 rubles, and the opponent's, also with full stuffing and a 2.5 liter engine, cost 1,895,000 rubles. The difference is obvious, and the victory was clearly in Mitsubishi's favor.

But a couple of years have passed and the price situation has changed radically. According to sites official dealers the new Nissan in the maximum configuration costs 1,847,000 rubles, and the Outlander - 1,999,990 rubles. Moreover, this is the price tag of the 2016 model. Crossover with a 2.4 liter engine. and a power of 167 hp. lineup 2017 costs 2 109 990 rubles. This is a colossal difference, and in this comparison criterion X Trail confidently comes out ahead. Drastic change in cost is understandable, and its reason will be disclosed below.

Engines

Speaking of trim levels, Nissan offers its customers three types of engine:

  • 1.6 l. with a capacity of 130 hp;
  • 2.0 l. 144 hp;
  • 2.5 l. with a capacity of 171 hp.

On versions with a 1.6 liter engine, a 6-speed mechanical box gear. The rest of the modifications are equipped with the familiar "Nissan" CVT.

In terms of equipment, the rival's situation is poorer. The car is represented exclusively by a variator gearbox and 2 types of motors:

  • 2.0 l. with a capacity of 146 hp;
  • 2.4 l. with 167 "horses".

And according to this criterion, X-Trail again comes out ahead, since it presents to the buyer more options, more powerful motor, but at the same time for less money.

Salon

In order not to break the tradition of reviews, let's start comparing the salons with the trunk - this element is one of the main ones when choosing of this type machines. And here again the dilemma arises. Comparing the latest configurations - Nissan X Trail 2.5 liters. and Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4 liters. - the useful volume of the first is 497 liters. against 477 liters. at the second.

But if you throw away rear seats, the situation is changing - 1585 liters. at Nissan against 1640 hp. at Mitsubishi.

And if we take for comparison the 2-liter version of Mitsubishi, its Japanese competitor is completely on the shoulder blades. The useful volume of the trunk of this modification is 591/1754 liters, which is an incredibly "roomy" figure among classmates.

However, this is a small inconvenience. The Outlander's large boot space is provided by the spare wheel, which is located under the floor, and not in the cabin, as in the Nissan X-Trail. In the conditions of Russian roads, this can create serious difficulties, since the "spare wheel" will constantly encounter the effects of dirt, moisture, and in winter icicles will hang on it. Therefore, it is better to pierce the wheels on a dry asphalt road in the warm season, otherwise you risk plunging into the hard working days of a trucker.

By the way, it should be said that both opponents have an electric tailgate.

There is ample space for passengers in both crossovers, front and rear. In Nissan, there is even a little more of it. But due to the panoramic roof in more expensive trim levels, there is almost enough space above the head of passengers in the second row. This is due to the fact that the roof opening and closing mechanism is hidden under the headliner.

The defect is insignificant, but psychologically this fact will press for a certain time. A person of any height can fit in Mitsubishi Outlander.

The ergonomics of the driver's seat are extremely similar. Everything is in its place, easily accessible and unobtrusive. It is worth noting a number of subtleties that can be considered a matter of taste. For example, on-board computer in Outlander it is more complex, and the color of the menu makes the eyes strain more, which is rather uncomfortable while driving. Interestingly, the computer control button is located almost on dashboard... But Mitsubishi has paddle shifters.

In general, the Mitsubishi salon looks more sporty and bold. The same can be seen in the driving style. Nissan in this case is more of a family car, where comfort, safety and smoothness are taken as the basis. It benefits from a panoramic roof that the Outlander manufacturers cannot provide. But overall, the ergonomics and interior design of both crossovers are equally good. Considering that the volume of the trunk is in favor of one Japanese, and the number of small but pleasant options is in favor of the second, we have a draw in this round. By the way, the noise insulation in the models is also at the same level.

Technical equipment

Let's move on to the next criterion, which is one of the most important - this is optionality. And here you will understand how that colossal Mitsubishi price gap mentioned earlier came about.

In 2015, when new versions of both crossovers entered the markets, Nissan was a solid winner. If we compare the maximum configurations of cars, then the X-Trail also had an all-round view system, which allows you to see all objects around the car's perimeter through the on-board computer, and a system that warns of crossing your path of a foreign object when reversing.

It also has sensors that signal when the wheels of the car cross a solid line, a system that notifies the vehicle in the blind zone, as well as a system automatic switching headlights from near to far. All this was not in the early version of the restyled Outlander. In the complete set 2016-2017 many of these options appeared, including all-round visibility and automatic headlight switching system. But I had to pay extra for the options - hence the jump in price.

Both machines have intelligent four-wheel drive and an uphill stop system that automatically locks the wheels and allows you to safely climb uphill without slipping.

Controllability and cross-country ability

During Toyota Rav 4 vs Nissan X Trail comparisons we said that "Rafik" is calmer and smoother, while the X Trail is faster and more aggressive. In this review of models, the situation is reversed. Compared to the Mitsubishi Outlander, the Nissan is calmer and more measured, and its opponent is impudent.

"Sportiness" Outlander can be traced in everything: from interior design to driving style. This is facilitated by wheel which is slightly "rubbery". It doesn't have the same responsiveness and rigidity as the competitor. Due to this, while driving a Mitsubishi, you have to constantly catch the balance. Every now and then he tries to get away, throwing adrenaline, like firewood in a stove.

This driving style stimulates, recharges, allows you to feel the drive, but the driver gets tired quickly from constant control. Outlander has a weak steering return, which makes it difficult to feel the car properly. Whereas in Nissan the driver drives the car using vision and feeling the car through steering feedback, Mitsubishi has to rely solely on vision. Unless you are a young ambitious guy trying to tame an obstinate stallion, this will quickly become annoying!

Against its background, the X-Trail seems too smooth, even, or even too correct. This can be seen in a calm and confident driving in any corner. This crossover exudes safety and stability. As a family car, it is ideal! Here you can take a break from the bustle of the city and enjoy a comfortable and confident ride.

Both CVTs are good when it comes to gearboxes, but the Outlander is better tuned. It seems to have artificial intelligence, which ensures a comfortable ride for the driver and protects the structure of the transmission. For example, if you try to switch to manual mode and engage a lower gear at a speed of 100 km / h, the box will not let you. It seems to protect you from rash actions that could harm the transmission. In addition, when the speed is lowered, the gearbox often engages the lower gear itself, providing headroom during acceleration.

As for the transmission, the score goes towards the Outlander, and the cross-country ability is the "ridge" of the X-Trail. Its intelligent four-wheel drive is better tuned. This allows him to slowly but surely take almost any height, and not take it with a swoop with speed, but smoothly and slowly. The opponent, in turn, lags behind a little, but keeps the bar. Even superiority in ground clearance does not help to win. Ground clearance Mitsubishi leaves 215 mm against 210 from the opponent.

Interestingly, recently, crossovers have begun to be produced with a fairly stiff suspension, which allows passengers to feel all the features of our luxury roads... But the models presented in this review are examples of softness! The Outlander, in its usual rocking motion, neatly absorbs all irregularities and stands guard for the comfort of passengers. And the X-Trail completely swallows any terrain, and at any speed. And again on the score in both piggy banks!

Japanese vs Japanese: summing up

The cars featured in our review are similar, but at the same time very different. They are similar in terms of interior and comfort. Considering the latest modifications of 2016-2017, they are almost equally equipped technically, have similar engine characteristics and an equally comfortable suspension. Outlander clearly wins in terms of trunk volume and CVT operation, and the X-Trail captivates with the number of modifications and cross-country ability. And he has a price tag along with everything technical equipment an order of magnitude lower.

"And still! What to buy? " - you ask. It depends on the character. X-Trail exudes stability and safety. The crossover is perfect for calm, balanced family people who have already proved everything to everyone in this life. It can be compared to pantyhose - it is thin and practical, while Outlander is a pair of stockings! He is playful, aggressive, makes him always keep his finger on the pulse and be ready to maneuver. It awakens drive! And if you have a lot of it, and you are not afraid to waste it, this car is for you! But in recent years, the price tag has been biting heavily on it, which scares off the "lion's share" of buyers. Therefore, it is worth weighing all the nuances and choosing a suitable unit. The main thing is that the ride is a pleasure!
