On the early cars, there were in-line four-cylinder engines of the 4G64 series, which are quite familiar to owners of Galant and other Mitsubishi cars, but the main engines are still a 3-liter V6 of the 6G72 series with a capacity of 177 hp. with. and diesel 4D56, with a volume of 2.5 liters and a capacity of 99 to 136 liters. with. In regional versions, one could find the larger 6G74 with a volume of 3.5 liters, and the diesel 2.8 4M40, and other engines. But cars with them come across extremely rarely.

On the picture: Mitsubishi pajero Sport "1999-2005

The three-liter V 6 prevailing in our market is really good. Cast iron block, good design, proven over the years, and very good traction characteristics... The timing belt is driven by a belt, but because the belt is strong and reliable.

The control system is far from ideal, but with minimum investment it can be put in order. Usually, plugs, high-voltage wires, ignition modules, lambda sensors and temperature sensors - and sometimes the wiring of the engine compartment itself - are brought in.

Serious damage to the motor can be caused by a malfunction of the cooling system - for example, antifreeze leaks (which are not uncommon) or fan failure due to viscous coupling or electrical problems. The radiators themselves are frankly flimsy, inflate when the system pressure rises, and are easily fouled in typical urban use.

The tendency to an increased oil appetite at age is usually tried to eliminate more quality oils and replacing the valve stem seals, which is quite successful. With runs for 250-300 thousand kilometers, the oil appetite progresses up to 0.5 liters per thousand kilometers, but the engine remains operational, and even catalysts can withstand such a regime for a long time.

The main thing is not to miss the oil level, since the crankshaft is very easily damaged by the slightest fluctuations in the level. An oil with a viscosity of SAE 40 and higher is recommended, and a mandatory check of hydraulic lifters and hydraulic timing belt tensioner after 200 thousand kilometers. Intake manifold leaks can be a little more troublesome. Of course, you need to monitor the condition of the candles and high-voltage wires- Interruptions in ignition lead to early failure of catalysts, which, in turn, kills the piston group.

The condition of the gaskets of the front cover of the unit will also require attention. Leaks quickly kill the timing belt, the resource of which is typically about 90 thousand kilometers. Often it is able to pass even 120, but when oiled it breaks down very quickly.

Unlike gasoline, diesel 4D 56 is not considered particularly reliable. A fairly old design, which was consistently forced from 70 to 99 or even 136 hp. with. corny does not withstand the load, despite the general thoughtfulness and quality of performance. The cylinder head and block crack, the pistons burn out under load, the rocker arm axles break, and sometimes even the timing belt tears at low mileage. With quiet operation, the engine can withstand both 300 and 400 thousand kilometers, but one trip at a speed of 120-130 km / h for a couple of hours can lead to cracking of the cylinder head and the appearance of excessive pressure in the cooling system.

The injection equipment on Pajero Sport engines does not cause any particular problems: the price of the components is low, EGR is easily muffled in the event of a malfunction, injectors are inexpensive. But all this is in low-powered versions. As for the later European variants with a boost of more than 136 liters. with., then here the fuel equipment is different, and the reliability is also lower.

WITH mechanical gearboxes There are no special problems, except that the dual-mass flywheels and clutches on diesel engines are not particularly reliable. But the automatic transmission of the V4A51 series and its rarer five-speed version on the Montero 3.5 V5A51 can be safely attributed to one of the most successful and resourceful boxes. Before a mileage of 200 thousand kilometers, problems are extremely rare, there are even automatic transmissions with runs over 400 thousand without repair.

The main problems of a purely electrical nature are the failure of the rotational speed sensors during severe operation, as well as the rare replacement of the planetary gear sets of the overdrive. The resource of the clutches of the gearbox and gas turbine engine is about 200 thousand kilometers (twice as much as on modern 6-8-speed automatic transmissions), so, as you can see, the design is perfectly balanced.

On cars for the Asian market, you can also find the Aisin 30-43LE four-speed gearbox, familiar to many from Toyota Land Cruiser of different series. It is no less reliable and even withstands tough exploitation a little better. With proper maintenance, it easily overcomes the half-million mark, and in commercial vehicles there are automatic transmissions with a mileage of over a million kilometers.

What should you choose?

In the first part of the material, we have already made a reservation that despite the seemingly high off-road potential and overestimated by many reliability, it is better to prefer a car that spent most of the time in the city. In this case, the lack of a suitable and reliable diesel engine will not be a problem - petrol version will not only become more preferable for the wallet, but also not too compromise for operation. But the price of transmission malfunctions can be quite large, and there are many problems in it.

For those who drive mainly in the city, we recommend cars with a constant transmission all-wheel drive AWD, with which the handling of Pajero Sport will be more or less light - these are mostly "Americans" after 2003 release. There is, however, an opinion that the best of all is a simple part-time 4WD, but it is based on the hypothesis about increased consumption fuel on all-wheel drive.

This makes sense, but the logic is broken: if you use a hardwired connection with no differential, then a disabled front axle really does save money. In the case of the smarter AWD and Super Select transmissions, there will be no such critical difference, and the all-wheel drive will give you what SUVs buy for: confidence on slippery surfaces and mixed.

After all you've read, are you attracted to the Pajero Sport purchase option?

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. Price: 2 949 990 p. On sale: since 2016

The abandoned concrete road carries us further and further away from the main road into the thicket of the forest. The once operating auxiliary road, which is part of the so-called "Ring of the Air Defense of Leningrad", is now "killed" and is popular only among mushroom pickers and black lumberjacks. There is practically no road. Bare seams, holes, gullies - all this is not for the suspension of ordinary cars. And not every crossover will allow itself to keep a good pace on such bumps. And we are racing. Because this "direction" does not cause any inconvenience to us or to the car. "Where to go?" - I ask a colleague. He looks around in confusion and sums up: "I guess it's time to turn around."

Washer in Mitsubishi Pajero Sport replaces the control lever transfer case

Well, the place where we could dip our new acquaintance in the mud was not found here either. And I wanted, oh, how I wanted to bathe this dude in a mud bath. Painfully formal, he looks, in order to be a real SUV. The chrome-plated physiognomy with a huge number of different kinds of inserts and elements is more reminiscent of a glamorous transformer than an off-road conqueror. While this shining splendor looks, of course, great, but what will become of it after the branches start whipping along the chrome Xs, and the lower part of the bumper starts scratching against the ground? .. The car looks no less elegant in profile. With such proportions, not to crawl along the slabs, but to set speed records. Compared to the previous generation new Pajero Sport stretched slightly, only by some 9 cm, but due to the glass line upturned to the stern, it seems much longer. The designers deftly used visual trickery when they painted the rear of the car. The edges of the rear lights flowing down to the bottom of the bumper visually significantly increased the height of the car, although this figure changed by only 5 mm. To many, this design decision seems far-fetched, but you cannot argue with the fact that now it will not be easy to isolate the new Pajero Sport from the stream, but very simple.

The presence of a frame causes a fairly high floor level

However, no matter how spinning around the car, and the third generation Mitsubishi Pajero Sport still it is an SUV, and not some kind of SUV. The frame also speaks in favor of this, by the way, the newcomer got practically no changes from the previous model, and the transfer case with a lowering row, and the Torsen locking differential, dividing the torque between the axles in a 40/60 ratio. There is even a mechanical rear cross-axle differential lock. And, of course, the clearance is 218 mm. All of this is clearly meant for something more than storming the curb near the house in the parking lot.

In such an interior, more from a crossover than from an SUV.

A narrow path without a curb with dense bushes along the length does not allow you to turn around at a time. Well, you have to turn the steering wheel, and at the same time your head. However, the latter is not necessary. The all-round visibility system, available from the third generation Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, allows you to maneuver a rather big car in cramped conditions. Moreover, the picture from the cameras can be changed by pressing the corresponding button on the steering wheel.

Native navigation is only capable of this. Maps are available via smartphone

But now the bumpy concrete road is behind, and we are again on the asphalt. To say that the new Pajero Sport behaves like a passenger car or even like a crossover on the track is cheating. Yes, it is now better adapted to paved roads, better steering due to the variable-effort power steering, but still the inertia and rolliness, characteristic of all heavy SUVs without exception, is present in it, albeit not to the same extent as before. So before you tumble into a turn or press the brake pedal, you should take into account that under you is not a crossover adapted for high-speed driving on asphalt, but a heavy frame car with a curb weight of two tons.

But it is not easy to realize this, because in the new interior there is more of the SUV. There is no abundance of levers, no powerful buttons or handles. A spectacular washer on the center console is now responsible for the razdatka. For the parking brake - the button. Anyway, everything here is very elegant. Even the handle of the automatic transmission has a designer shape and is covered with leather. The box, by the way, on the new Pajero Sport is new, 8-speed, and the last two stages are increasing. This allowed the heavy SUV to be endowed with tolerable dynamics and quite moderate fuel consumption. So far, the car is supplied to our market with only one engine - a three-liter V6 with a capacity of 209 liters. with., powered by 95th gasoline. It cannot be said that the car is more than enough for it. Even if it allows you to easily keep in the stream, and if you wish, at the start you can even strike your rear tires on the asphalt in 2H transmission mode, but ... Effective getting to the point is clearly not Pagero Sport's strong point. Briskly starting, he then wilts, and the expected "Wow! .." is not. You can try to improve the result a little by shifting gears with paddle shifters, but believe me, there will be no significant change in dynamics. Unless you amuse your vanity, thinking that you are smarter than electronics, which changes gears based on data from many sensors, and not on subjective feelings.

The instrument panel is neat and quite descriptive

And there are actually more sensors in the car. Pajero Sport is surrounded by ultrasonic sensors in a circle to avoid hitting an obstacle. Moreover, the electronics will not only warn with a signal, but also damp the accelerator pedal so that the car does not jump to the side if the driver suddenly presses the pedal too sharply. The sensors also monitor how quickly you approach the vehicle in front. Moreover, this distance can be programmed. Not forgotten, of course, and the control of blind spots. In addition, there are many more sensors that are not visible, but it is thanks to them that the driver can feel more relaxed off-road. We are talking about a system that allows you to select the optimal operating mode for the transmission and engine, depending on what is under the wheels. A small button next to the transfer case washer allows you to tune the vehicle to gravel, mud / snow, sand or rocks.

This time we did not find dirt, but we managed to get to the sandy beach. And I must say that the way the systems work is really felt. Every time when I successively turned on the four-wheel drive, then the four-wheel drive with a locked center differential, or even completely switched to lowering, the car managed to make its way further and further towards the intended goal. Moreover, when the "sand" mode was selected, wheel slip became less obvious, and the car went forward more confidently. However, you need to understand that all these modes are not a magic wand, and each time, before you poke your head around, you still need to realistically assess not only the capabilities of the car, but also your own - as a driver. Off-road driving is a science and must be learned.

GLONASS ERA SOS button is pretty useful option especially for SUV

Well, the fact that the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport can be a good help in this can be asserted with full confidence. After all, first of all, it was created precisely in order to provide you with freedom and independence off the roads, and not on the asphalt. So before you are thinking of buying it, think a thousand times how often you can "walk" it there, for which it was really prepared. Otherwise, it will look like a malamute locked in the four walls of a stuffy city apartment. Believe me, even a lapdog can bring slippers in the morning ...

A real SUV is nowhere without good crankcase protection.

Verdict

Pajero Sport of the third generation has become the flagship in the Mitsibishi model line in Russia, and I must say that it deserves it, because from a once utilitarian SUV it has turned into a premium car. This is reflected both in the equipment of the car and in the price of it.

The cars were provided by the Rolf Vitebsk car dealership and LLC MMC Rus.

Pajero Sport with a 2.4 liter turbodiesel finally reached Russia. with a capacity of 181 hp (from the beginning of this year it began to be assembled at the Kaluga plant). A similar Toyota Land Cruiser Prado immediately acted as its rival. A test drive of the Prado and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport off-road revealed which of these "dinosaurs" is better.

Pajero Sport 2016 and Land Cruiser hit the test2.8 l. 177 hp, produced at the end of 2015.

In terms of cost in the Russian market, these are two direct competitors, but in philosophy, they are completely different from each other. Land Cruiser is created on a separate platform of its own, Pajero Sport is the same, albeit with a different body.

Prices: 3.2 million rubles for the Prado and 2.9 million for the Pajero Sport. The cost can be considered the same, because when you have to pay more than three million rubles for a car, the difference of 300 thousand no longer plays a special role.

The first impression of Pajero Sport is disappointing. It was expected that, together with the new engine, it will change the appearance at least from the front. But everything remained the same, but taillights, which, without a bumper, freely flow down somewhere, cause an unpleasant aftertaste. In theory, this is "brutal", whose task is to cross off-road. But its body, most likely, is easily remembered on the first big bump, since it is not protected by anything at the back. Real off-road refinement is indispensable here.

On the other hand, this is only the appearance of a giant with whom we have developed a special relationship in Russia. Harmonious and calm, he does not give reason to doubt his strength. An interesting observation can be used to prove this. Despite the fact that Pajero Sport is completely ready for off-road rework, over the past year such a tuning model has not appeared on the market, although the height of the arches is considerable ground clearance directly allude to. There is also a place for a winch under the front bumper.

As for the Prado, an entire industry is working on its off-road tuning. On the Internet, you can see Prado on large 35-inch wheels. This is the Arctic Truck model with fender flares and other bells and whistles. But this is not the limit, because in our market you can find Prado with 37-inch wheels. However, this is an exception to the rule, as most people prefer standard models.

The base Prado with two batteries is initially pretty good off-road ready. The bonnet opens pleasantly with gas stops. The air intake is set high and hidden in the wing, which makes it possible to cross even a deep-water ford.

Diesel Pajero Sport is equally ready for water hammer. In the engine compartment, the air intake, like that of the Prado, is hidden in the right fender. Recall that on the gasoline Pajero Sport, the air intake was brought out only under the edge of the front end. The hood is heavy, it is inconvenient to open, it has no stops.

In the Sport cabin, there are no special changes, except for the tachometer, marked up to 4 thousand rpm for the diesel range. The interior's extreme restraint continues to be frowned upon. This salon with cheap plastic obviously does not pull at 3 million. If not a good comfortable driver's seat, much better than that of the previous Pajero Sport, one could put a two in the cabin.

The interior of the Prado, too, clearly does not pull the amount that is asked for it. Everything is simple, rather archaic, but as clear and practical as possible. The seats are stiffer and not so comfortable, the backrest profile is thought out extremely uncomfortable.

The top trims are available in dark brown trim and aluminum moldings. Prado is thoroughly prepared for the transport of goods. To this have the carriage layout of the luggage compartment and its impressive volume. There was a place for a spare wheel under the bottom.

Asphalt

As many as 8 gears of the classic hydromechanical automatic a priori command respect. But is it justified to use a large number of steps. It is noteworthy that such a box got along badly with a gasoline engine. Constant delays and delays of the automatic machine affected the lack of engine thrust. This was especially noticeable on used models. The engine of the new turbodiesel is clearly more powerful, the delay of the box does not affect it so much.

It is best to use the potential of the engine in the manual mode of the box, because the operation of the machine itself does not inspire confidence. And it's strange that it was not reconfigured for the new diesel Pajero Sport. You can immediately forget about the smooth running of the Pajero Sport. This SUV is tough, especially on uneven road surfaces. However, compared to the gasoline counterpart, diesel is better. It is about 120 kg heavier, and it's amazing how a four-cylinder unit can outweigh a six-cylinder gasoline unit in this regard.

The increase in mass a priori led to the transformation of the springs and shock absorbers. This affected better side for an SUV that previously drove well only off-road. Now the jeep rolls without any problems and on smooth roads.

The gasoline car was constantly shaking, driving on the asphalt was completely uncomfortable. If earlier there was a desire to leave the car after 100 kilometers, now this is not the case. Nevertheless, unfortunately, some bloopers remained. This is a buildup on a long wave and painful passage of sharp irregularities (hatches, bumps in the roadway).

The Prado has a six-speed gearbox. But it is much "smarter" machine Sport. It is also not the fastest in the world, there are delays, but they are sensed and controlled in advance. Prado is somewhat inferior in terms of agility. 11.6 seconds to 100 km / h for Pajero Sport and 12.7 seconds for Toyota Prado.

The smoothness of the Prado is impressive. The frame of a large SUV is not felt at all. Asphalt irregularities click Toyota like seeds. Compared to the Pajero Sport, this is a passenger car with all its comfort.

Prado benefits.

  1. It takes corners better than the competition. This is especially felt when transplanted with Pajero Sport. The SUV does not fall sideways when cornering, it reacts much more actively to the steering wheel, and is generally perceived as a more lively car.
  2. Another advantage of the Prado on asphalt: it stands on a straight line with reinforced concrete, which is typical of all Toyota.

Of the shortcomings.

  1. The Prado pedal, which is difficult to dose braking. At the first moment, the effect of over-amplification arises, as if not one brake booster is included in the work, but several. Prado, stopping, nodding, and it's unpleasant.
  2. Noise isolation is clearly lame. With each acceleration, the engine seems to crawl out from under the hood. The roar of the diesel engine after 1500 rpm does not leave the salon.

As a result, it is possible to give such a comparative assessment of both SUVs. The new diesel Pajero Sport no longer enrages after hundreds of kilometers, but any long distances spent behind the wheel are still perceived as a duty or obligation. In Prado, you want to go somewhere, and this is exactly the feeling that the car of the track should give rise to.

Off road

These off-road vehicles are built to tackle the rough terrain. And the asphalt test cannot sum up. The main thing is how "dinosaurs" behave on bad roads.

While the Prado's seating isn't nearly as comfortable as the Pajero Sport's, the ride over the waves is much softer. Toyota's suspension works amazingly. Mitsubishi is a mountain goat, and its chassis raises questions. In the classic Pajero, it is a different matter, the suspension is excellent there, and it provoked to drive on primers. Alas, this is not the case with Sport: ship buildup, low energy consumption (especially in the front end), constant wheel bouncing and separation from the road. If a section of the path is encountered with deep potholes, it is almost impossible to calm Pajero Sport, you have to slow down.

Thus, the Pajero Sport suspension falls into the list of disadvantages. She showed herself extremely poorly both on asphalt and off-road.

Sand

On the sand, an SUV needs an efficient lowering and a powerful engine. Pajero Sport is doing well with that. You can select the automatic Sand mode, which allows for a little wheel spin (when the car starts to get stuck), but still maintains a sharp and good response from a standstill.

On a sandy surface, the automatic transmission must be set to manual mode, since it is easy to get stuck in automatic mode. The engine here should show itself in full force, especially on the rise. Without blocking the center differential, bleeding tire pressure and other off-road training no one will succeed in conquering the dunes the first time.

The new turbodiesel base Pajero Sport did not pass the test on heavy sand, at least by five. He did not have enough torque or Horse power... But electronics proved to be excellent. She allowed him to come out victorious where the Prado would definitely be stuck.

On the Land Cruiser, you also need to block the center differential and turn on the "lowering". From the electronics, you can leave the traction control system, because it is she who performs the functions of interwheel locks. Unlike Mitsubishi with its rigid rear derailleur, the Prado has both differentials free.

Unfortunately, Toyota does not have such a "fair" manual automatic transmission mode as on Sport. But you can choose speed limits. For example, if the 2nd is put with a restriction, this means that the Prado will not go higher than the second gear.

A quick start from a standstill, but as soon as the tires get stuck in the heavy sand, the Prado slips hopelessly. "Samurai" showed much top scores.

Prado takes the bull by the horns, where the coating is somewhat harder. Toyota shows off-roading wonders, and ascents on shallow, even sand are taken the first time. Sport - failed this test. But here the tire profile affected, which on the Land Cruiser turned out to be more suitable for off-road races.

But the diagonal on the sand turned out to be much better than the Prado. Toyota's electronics do not work as efficiently, you can hear the brakes crunching. In Sports, you can move forward centimeters, and eventually defeat a difficult section by connecting electronic assistants to the work. The Prado advances millimeters, slips terribly, and the attempt to overcome the difficult section fails.

On the sand, Mitsubishi looks better in terms of potential. "Honest" manual mode, hard rear locking, a larger set of electronic assistants - all this is reflected in the plus of Pajero Sport. Alas, on Prado with standard tires it is better not to stop on such a surface, but to press on the gas all the time, trying to get away from deep sands.

Dirt

Let's leave the sand test drive to the Arab sheikhs. They are used to driving off-road on such a surface. As for our realities, off-road driving will mean a meeting with narrow forest paths filled with mud.

Both Mitsubishi Sport and Toyota Prado are initially ready to conquer the traditional Russian off-road. Both have very powerful levers at the front and steel sump protectors. Considering that there is also a continuous bridge at the back, there is no particular fear of contact with the ground.

The potential of the electronics of Sport is reflected here as well. On the other hand, Prado did not hit his face in the mud either, overcoming barriers a little slower than his opponent. And here I must say thank you to the Toyota suspension, which is capable of perfectly taking a punch.

But all the advantages of the Pajero Sport transmission (and it is practically the best in the world) are drowned in the disadvantages of its chassis. On any part of the off-road, an unpleasant swing and bumps are felt.

Video: off-road on Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Prado

Off-roading showed that both cars at a price of 3 million rubles are not ready for a full-fledged off-road. The sport looked a little better, but it was sunk by the suspension. Prado is a real "dinosaur", but only on the asphalt.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, without exaggeration, is the most titled and popular sport utility vehicle in the history of mankind. Those who know a lot about cars understand this, having familiarized themselves with the characteristics. The 218 mm ground clearance is the maximum that car manufacturers are capable of in this class. Engines of 3 and 2.4 liters have the corresponding power of 209 and 181 liters. with. Add independent front suspension (like McPherson) to the category of benefits. Reliable and durable rear suspension has excellent performance thanks to the stabilizer lateral stability.

To buy a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, you do not have to be an avid car enthusiast and know the specified characteristics: the stylish design on the outside and in the interior, combined with the shine of chrome-plated parts, makes you fall in love at first sight, causing a state of slight envy among others.

GUARDING YOUR SAFETY

SUV for the elite

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is equipped with a robust frame construction made of heavy-duty materials. Despite the fact that the car is considered a true SUV and feels great when overcoming rough terrain, it has a confident ride on the Autobahn and in narrow city streets. The Super Select 4WD is helping to unleash that potential. The capabilities of this intelligent transmission are surprising. For example, a driver on the move (up to 100 km / h) can switch from an economical city mode to an all-wheel drive.

The advantages do not end there: those who decide to buy a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport in the ROLF YUG sales salon can be convinced of all 4 transmission modes on a test drive. They include:

  • 2H - direct transmission, rear-wheel drive;
  • 4H - direct transmission, four-wheel drive;
  • 4HLc - direct drive, four-wheel drive and center differential lock;
  • 4LLc - downshift, four-wheel drive and blocking of the center and cross-axle differential.

The geometric indicators of the cross-country deserve praise. Thanks to a ground clearance of 215 mm, a ramp angle of 23 degrees and an anti-slip system, the owner will forever forget about off-road problems. The approach angle is 36 degrees, and the departure angle is respectively 24 degrees. Both on the road and far from civilization, the smooth running of the car is in the area of responsibility of the dynamic stability control system (ASTC for short). Original side steps give the car a masculine look. The driver gains confidence thanks to the all-wheel drive system. With its help, you can choose the best option for the transmission. This allows you to move confidently both on asphalt and on sticky impenetrable mud.

Highest level of security

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport's price new configuration not only the best characteristics at the moment are invested, but also safety. That is why it is preferred by everyone who appreciates peace of mind in their life. This work of auto art can be easily compared to a four-wheeled tank. The robust RISE-standard body shell made of tough alloys has saved more than one life in accidents. Engineers thought carefully automatic system unlocking the side doors, which is triggered in a collision.

I am sad: there will be no new Mitsubishi Pajero - the current fourth generation will live another year and retire. But I am asked not to dramatize the situation: the new Pajero Sport has been announced as the flagship of the model line. A pensioner with a smartphone: a frame, a rear dependent suspension and a platoon of electronic assistants like an autobraking system. Ok Google, is the Pajero Sport worth buying?

NS The reincarnation that Pajero Sport underwent resembles Mickey Rourke's plastic surgery: instead of the charismatic face, which went like a brass knuckle power bumper, - lip-cheeky something with headlights on half of the front end. By the way, LED lighting is excellent, especially long-range ones. And what do the red streaks of lanterns symbolize - they say, wash yourself with bloody tears, competitors? So we have only two of them left: yes ...

The fit has become more comfortable, the finish is better, the steering wheel is heated in the places of the correct grip. Plus additional sheets of vibration and noise isolation

After my own third-generation Pajero, the new Sport is a bit cramped: the proximity of the front pillar and the passenger on the right presses, you can get bruises on the silvery sides of the tunnel in the center. The seat itself has become noticeably more comfortable - the chair is located higher, its pillow is longer - but where to put the little things you need on the trip? Instead of a full-fledged two-level box between the seats, there is a modest compartment with an uncomfortable shelf, there is no capacious basement under the center console. And try to open the lid of an empty glove compartment: you need not only to press the button, but also to pull the edge with your fingernail. It remains to dump everything in the capacious pockets on the doors.

The devices are simple and straightforward - just what you need for an SUV

The cabin is surprisingly quiet. The 2.4 liter 4N15 turbodiesel, already familiar to me from the L200 pickup, will appear only next year, and the good old 4D56 engine will no longer be on the Russian market. While under the hood there is no alternative petrol "six" 3.0 with a capacity of 209 hp. This is less than before: the engineers returned the conventional intake tract, getting rid of the system for changing its length.

Mitsubishi Connect pleases with the high-speed performance and decent sound of the audio system. There is no native navigation, but there are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto applications for deep integration with smartphones - you can display the Google Maps program on the screen

The voice of the "six" is beautiful, but there is enough traction, only while the salon is empty - in the expeditionary layout Pajero Sport is unhurried, but does not complain of appetite. The new "automatic" Aisin with its eight gears skillfully imitates the character of DSG preselections and already at 70 km / h rolls on the seventh stage by almost idle- but despite this, even with road tires outside the city, the new Sport consumes more than 12 l / 100 km: the range on a 70-liter tank does not exceed 560 km. And the drivetrain's love for top gears goes sideways when you need to accelerate with the flow. You have to press the gas pedal deeper, the box catches itself too hard - and the acceleration turns out to be too intense.

To help huge mirrors and slender stands - four all-round cameras. They can be turned on forcibly with a key on the steering wheel, the system works up to 10 km / h. The picture quality in the daytime is decent

It is treated only by transferring to manual mode - but then, before a complete stop, the first gear turns on with a noticeable unfriendly jab. Return the old five-speed "automatic"! Yes, he was slow, but logical. But do not touch the appeared transmission cooling radiator: now the box does not overheat and does not go into emergency mode, even if you climb the mountain for a long time.

There is enough space in the back, there is heating, but the pillow is too low - you have to sit with your knees up. The backrest is adjustable in tilt angle

Changes to the chassis are like a two-sided medal. Front - handling: day and night with its predecessor! He tilted heavily and sometimes fell: look how many "shifters" are on sale in the secondary market. But now the steering wheel has become much "shorter" (3.7 turns between extreme positions instead of the previous 4.5), there is adequate effort on it. Plus new springs, shock absorbers and anti-roll bars. The all-wheel drive Super Select II transmission - with a self-locking center differential Torsen, whereas before the viscous coupling was responsible for blocking.

Despite the fair amount of roll, the wheels do not come off the road. Even at full load - not a hint of tipping over

It's not in vain! I have a good feel for what is happening with the steer wheels, and rolls in corners hardly raise my blood pressure. And the stabilization system is brilliantly tuned. Keeping in mind how, I decided to repeat the spectacular shot. I loaded Pajero Sport to full weight, sat down on the right, and freed up a place behind the wheel for our expert Yaroslav Tsyplenkov. But - no chance of overturning! The electronics slowed down smoothly and effectively, and the Sport simply floated out of the corner, instead of ripping the unloaded inner wheels off the asphalt.

The trunk is huge and there are hooks on the floor for the net. In the usual position, things are hidden by a roller blind. The transformation is standard and not very convenient: backseat folds and rises vertically

But the smoothness of the ride ... Why does Mitsubishi constantly shake as if driving on square wheels? On any surface! Each pit accompanies you about fifty meters until you get into the next one - stopping at a traffic light, you feel like a road worker who has broken away from a puncher. And you can't go faster than 40 km / h on a dirt road - where the L200 pickup easily allowed you to go 80 km / h. Moreover, on especially large bumps, it is noticeable that the compression travel of the front suspension is almost completely selected.

Next to the two-arm buttons for heating the front seats is the rear differential lock button and the switch for the blind spot monitoring system. It's funny that the indicator of its work lights up even on the dashboard.

But off the roads Pajero Sport is still a fighter. The angle of entry has slightly decreased due to the massive front bumper, but the rear, on the contrary, is extremely compact, and the ground clearance under the standard metal engine protection is 216 mm. The huge wheel arches just ask for large tires of the Mud Terrain class, behind the front bumper there is plenty of room for a winch. And if you crawl slowly along the ruts and gullies, then the suspension moves command respect.

Next to the "automatic" selector, there is a transfer case control washer and large buttons for turning on the hill descent assistant and off-road modes traction control system... Indication of programs - on the dashboard. You can change the set descent speed using the gas and brake pedals.

Transmission modes are switched with a swivel washer, not a lever. As before, Pajero Sport allows you to drive in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive modes, and on any road. Going down into the ravine? The first step is to lock the center, then you can use a downshift with a number of 2.57 instead of the previous 1.90. Unfortunately, as with the L200 pickup, it takes too long to wait for the actuators to fire. And to lock the differentials, you often need to jerk the car back and forth. Just like in the Niva!

The electrical wiring in vulnerable places was laid carelessly (first slide), and it is very easy to tear off the brake hose loop behind the rear axle (second slide) in the rut. The breathers are now not brought out high into the spars - they need to be redone to force fords and deep puddles. The standard metal protection is replete with slots for blowing the radiator package (third slide), but because of this it will become an excellent dirt collector. But behind the front and rear bumpers there are powerful stationary lugs, and of the large parts below the frame, only the gas tank hangs

By the way, if you forcibly clamp the rear differential, then all auxiliary electronics will turn off, up to the ABS. But believe me, in some situations, the traction control system's help will come in very handy. For example, on an uphill, when one of the front wheels is unloaded and there is no way to take an obstacle in motion. Instead of a useless frenzied spin, the brake will gently grab the spinning wheel and the Pajero Sport will keep moving.

Moreover, the number of off-road modes is even excessive: Gravel, Mud / Snow, Sand and Stones. The response to the gas pedal is the same in all positions, but in the Stones Pajero Sport practically does not allow slipping, and in the Dirt, on the contrary, it allows the wheels to make several revolutions. Gravel and Sand are very close to each other and are located in the middle in terms of slip. A logical setting.

The permissible ford depth is 800 mm, however, although the air intake is raised up, it is directed in the direction of travel

And the main thing is that the system really works. Just to activate it, you need to turn off the rear differential lock. How to move the car back and forth for this if it is already stuck?

Anyway, now you'll think ten times more whether to scratch your sides with branches, or drown in puddles. After all, Pajero Sport is no longer a "Japanese UAZ": at least 2 million 750 thousand rubles for the Instyle version with leather interior, heated seats and steering wheel and 18-inch wheels. And the Ultimate car, which we tested, is "loaded" with a system for monitoring blind spots and automatic braking - and they ask for another two hundred thousand more. For the first time in history, Sport is more expensive than Pajero!

Standard rear mudguards do not save the bumper from sandblasting from under the wheels

Maybe not to move off the asphalt? But why then a frame, continuous rear axle, all blockages - and this constant shaking even on a seemingly smooth road?

Of course, the suspension issue can be solved by tuning. For most, however, the new Sport is too expensive to build a rogue or expedition vehicle, and the threat of being canceled for alterations is still valid. And only managers from the Russian representative office of Mitsubishi can see a prestigious SUV in Sport.

Or I'm wrong?

Generations of Sports

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport of the first generation(1996-2010) was created on a shortened chassis of the L200 pickup with front independent torsion bar and rear dependent spring suspension. After modernization in 2000, the rear springs were replaced with springs, in the range of engines, in addition to "fours", petrol 2.4 (110 hp) and turbo diesel 2.5 (85 hp), appeared "six" (175 hp). In the US, the SUV was marketed as the Montero Sport, usually with an advanced Super Select transmission, while in other markets it was sold as a hard-coupled Easy Select front-wheel drive. 630 thousand cars were produced.

The second generation Pajero Sport has been produced since 2008, it is created on the chassis of the fourth generation L200 pickup truck. In the rear dependent suspension, springs were immediately used instead of springs, a seven-seat version appeared. Three petrol engines - 2.4 (160 HP), 3.0 (220 HP) and 3.5 (210 HP) - and two turbodiesels: 3.2 (200 HP) and 2.5 (up to 178 HP). from.), transmission - only Super Select. It was originally produced in a factory in Thailand, and then assembled in Brazil, Venezuela, India, Bangladesh and Russia (from 2013 to 2015). To date, about 400 thousand cars have been produced.
