Optima, aka Kia Magentis, entered business class in 2000. For all sixteen years of her life, the model systematically adopted the experience of competitors and did not allow them to eat herself. And if earlier such leaders of the segment as Toyota Camry and Ford Mondeo could have ignored the Korean sedan at close range, now they have to reckon with it.
The new Optima is slightly larger than its predecessor, with a body made of half ultra-high-strength steels (51% versus 20% for third-generation cars) and has a higher torsional rigidity. Added power, which was so lacking for Vladimir Solovyov at the pre-premiere screening (ZR, 2016, No. 1).
Base two-liter motor with a return of 150 forces - the only unit that can be ordered with a six-speed mechanics, and even then only for cars in the base. These go to corporate fleets and taxis. The version with a "stirrer" accounts for no more than 5% of sales, so it makes no sense to expand the "mechanical" offer. And more expensive versions come only with a six-speed hydromechanical automatic.
The main rate is on two-liter cars with a gun in Russia, however, more powerful versions of the GT-Line and GT were brought to Germany for the test, which change the appearance and character of the sedan.
The GT-Line is a sports package offered for vehicles with a 2.4-liter 188-horsepower naturally aspirated vehicle. The package includes a front bumper with air duct gills and a slightly different pattern of the radiator grille, 18-inch wheels of the original design, LED taillights with black edging, rear bumper with a large pseudo-diffuser and two exhaust pipes... The front brake calipers are painted red. And the most powerful Optima, with a 245-horsepower two-liter turbo engine, has no alternative in the GT configuration. Its external difference is that the rear brakes are also scarlet.
For me, Optima in a civilian body kit is prettier: it has more interesting front bumper lines, and foglights are available, while a car with a sports body kit is devoid of them.
What's new inside? The front panel is now finished with soft plastic. Perforated leather on the steering wheel in the constant grip zone. Harman Kardon's premium audio speakers deliver decent sound, and wireless charging supports high-end smartphones, including the YotaPhone 2.
Even when the 2.4-liter engine accelerates, it is almost inaudible - the Optima has become much quieter. The engine and the six-speed automatic understand each other perfectly - there are no problems either in the city or on the Autobahn. The gas pedal is not as sharp as before: its free travel has been increased, which makes it possible to open the throttle more smoothly - the ride is now less jerky. The turbo version is meaner! On wet asphalt after rain, 245 "horses" easily break the wheels into slipping under the distinct whimper of the turbine. Power with interest!
The "gait" has also changed. Single lower arms for improved stability and handling rear suspension replaced by double ones: the car feels great in cornering. And this despite the fact that the clearance of the Russian Optima (I drove the versions in the Russian specification) was increased from European 135 mm to an acceptable 155 mm. Front bumper sits high enough even in sports versions - non-format Russian curbs are not terrible. And it's nice that the Optima isn't as bone-shaking as it used to be.
I once wrote that in behavior Korean cars artificiality is felt. This applied to Optima to a lesser extent, and now the touch of "synthetics" is almost completely erased. You want to spur the car, enjoy the accuracy of the reactions, listen to the engine snarling. The German premium is still a long way off, but the distance has narrowed.
