Often on the Internet you can find the opinion that the paintwork of Koreans is very thin and unreliable, that chips and cracks from small stones often occur. I can’t agree with this, let alone count it among the significant shortcomings of this machine. Chips happen on absolutely all cars of any brands.

As for the interior decoration, it must be admitted that the quality of the plastic is not the highest. The dashboard elements and center console are made of tough materials. Squeaks and crickets are common on the Rio, as on many machines in this price range. In general, the soundproofing of the Rio is rather mediocre. In the cabin, the noise from the contact of the wheels with the road surface, the operation of the engine and suspension is well audible. It is possible to eliminate this by making additional noise insulation of the car.

What often breaks down:

  • Heated seats, heating elements burn out.
  • Power window button blocks. Easy to repair.
  • Blocks of buttons for controlling the radio tape recorder on the steering wheel. You just have to change them.

All these breakdowns are eliminated and can hardly be considered decisive when choosing a car, but some amount, if any, must be “thrown off” from the sale price.

Engine problems

Only two engines are installed on the third generation Kia Rio: 1.4 and 1.6 liters. Both are chain motors, that is, the timing belt does not have to be changed every 60 thousand, which can be considered a plus. The motors are made of aluminum and do not have repair dimensions for the groove. That is, it is impossible to order pistons of overhaul size, they are simply not produced. Of course, it is very expensive to change a cylinder block, so a block liner service has appeared on our market. Thus, you can save a lot, but the cost of repairs will still be at least $ 1,500.

By a run of 60 - 90 thousand in Rio, the catalytic converter of exhaust gases (catalyst) often fails. By itself, it is expensive, therefore, unfortunately, in our country it is often not changed, but simply knocked out. This results in more toxic exhaust and a louder exhaust sound.

But the breakdown of the catalyst itself is not as significant as the possible consequences. Structurally, the catalyst on Rio engines is located very close to the cylinder head. Because of this, when the catalyst is destroyed, ceramic dust from it is sucked into the cylinders. It acts like an emery stone on the surface of the cylinder, leading to rapid wear and tear. The engine loses compression, consumes oil. We have to do repairs (liner) or replace the cylinder block. Therefore, "missing" the destruction of the catalyst will have to pay a large sum for the repair of the motor.

If Rio is equipped with gas equipment, you will have to keep in mind that there are no hydraulic lifters in the engine design. This means that the valve clearances are manually adjusted. On a car with HBO, you will have to do this every 40 - 90 thousand kilometers, depending on the driving style and the quality of the HBO setting. The adjustment procedure is complicated and costs about $ 150 on official services.

Often on rio ignition coils break. There are 4 of them, one per cylinder. The cost of one original is about $ 50. Usually occurs on runs over 50,000 km. The cause of the breakdown may be candles not replaced in time.

On a mileage of about 50,000, a strong whistle may appear from under the hood of the rio, especially on a cold engine. Transmission

Another common symptom is a delay in engaging the reverse gear: turn on reverse, release the brake pedal, and the car does not drive, after a second or two the gear is engaged and the movement begins. All these machine problems are treated by replacing the automatic transmission valve block. The price for this part is high, so be sure to check the machine for these problems before purchasing. But it cannot be said that this is a very common malfunction.

Suspension

The suspension design is simple: MacPherson strut at the front, and a semi-independent split beam at the back.

On runs of 15-30 thousand, stabilizer struts can knock. Less commonly, the stabilizer bushings are worn out. Replacing these parts will not hit your pocket, so it's difficult to call this a significant drawback.

In general, everything is simple behind and there is practically nothing to break.

The suspension of the Kia Rio is quite stiff, like many other cars in this class. Due to this rigidity and bad roads, wheel bearings sometimes fail on runs of 50-60 thousand. Shock absorbers and springs run for a long time, again, if you try, you can kill them even on 50 thousand, but these are special cases.

In the first Rio, the owners complained about knocking on the steering gear. The reason was the rack bushing. On machines from 2012, this factory defect has been eliminated.

In all Rio, this symptom sometimes occurs: the steering wheel rotates with an uneven effort, sometimes tight, sometimes more easily, depending on the position of the steering wheel. The reason is in the steering rack, or rather, in the spool valve that bypasses the fluid flow. It can be replaced separately.

Outcomes

So, when buying a used Rio, I advise be sure to check the following:

  • Engine: make computer diagnostics and measure the compression (nominal value 12.5 kg / cm2, the difference between the cylinders is not more than 1 kg / cm2).
  • Automatic transmission: also comp. diagnostics and test drive, make sure that the gear shift is smooth. Try on the spot, at idle, changing gears from D to R and make sure that the car starts off on a level surface without pressing the gas pedal, without delay, and there is no perceptible shock when switching.
  • Suspension: make a general diagnosis of the chassis with a mandatory check of all wheel bearings and a check of the steering rack. At idle, in place, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock, the rotation should be uniform, the force applied to the steering wheel should not change.
  • Body: check the paintwork with a paint thickness gauge, so you will find out if the car was involved in an accident. The factory paintwork on the Kia Rio has a thickness of 120 - 140 microns.

It's about the second generation Kia Rio; in fact, this is the brother of Hyundai Vern ( ZR, 2012, No. 5 ). Let's remind: the rather good, in general, "Vernu" was most of all let down by the extremely unreliable electric power steering. The problem has not been resolved to this day, and the company's representative office is silent.

There are fewer complaints about Rio in terms of the amplifier: before restyling, the model was equipped with a proven power steering, and after that with an EUR, but not the same as that of Verna. Hyundai uses capricious resistive torque sensors, and Kia uses optical ones. Still, it was not without a fly in the ointment: many owners complained about extraneous knocks in the steering mechanism. There was even a revocable campaign in which dealers changed the plastic bushings if tightening the spring-loaded rack nuts did not help. The right bushing was loosened more often, but at the same time the left one was also changed: if the mechanism is disassembled, and the bushings are relatively cheap, such a decision is logical.

Often knocks were made by the lower cardan joint of the steering shaft - it was loosened along the splines. This connection was simply packed with additional grease.

Steering tips serve 60-70 thousand km, thrust - twice or three times longer. Moreover, the rods are replaced separately from the steering mechanism, which is now less common.

LUCKY

The reliability of Hyundai-Kia cars depends to a large extent on which of the models was the pioneer when introducing new components and assemblies or fine-tuning old ones. “Rio”, one might say, was lucky: perhaps only the starter fell out of the raw on his shoulders.

LET'S GET TO KNOW

Always remember about the wrong location of the climate control knob, designed to select the temperature: one wrong move and the knee breaks the circuit board of the device. It is specially made openwork in order to exclude injuries in the event of an accident, but it breaks easily even with a slight pressure on the handle.

I got it in my mouth, and dealers do not repair starters. At best, they change under warranty. And at the same time, it is noted that in 90% of cases the problem is solved by an elementary tightening and lubrication of the power terminals of the retractor relay.

All motors are time-tested, once developed by Mitsubishi and have proven themselves well on the Getz ( ZR, 2007, No. 11 ), "Matrix" ( 2008, № 4 ), "Elantre" ( 2009, № 6 ). With the advent of the electric booster, the power steering pump disappeared and the drive of the attachments changed. With the timing, everything is as before: the toothed belt drives the exhaust camshaft, and the intake camshaft is connected to it by a separate chain at the rear of the unit (in the region of the fourth cylinder). We change the timing belt after 60 thousand km (according to the new regulations after 90 thousand km), and the chain is best at 120 thousand. Although it is often enough for up to 180 thousand km. When buying a used car, if you are not sure of its real mileage, it is better to replace the roller belt preventively.

Numerous control unit firmwares have not made the engines less demanding on fuel quality. But they are tolerant of the high resin content - the valves work without problems. True, dealers recommend flushing the injectors without dismantling every 30–45 thousand km (this removes carbon deposits from the valves and their guides). After such an injection, we must change the suppositories. High-voltage wires usually serve 80-100 thousand km.

The engine radiator is less tenacious. Under the influence of reagents, it begins to leak along the lower left rolling after 60 thousand km (about 10% of cases). Watch the level of antifreeze: you miss it - the engine can get irreversible heat stroke!

A corrugation is installed in the exhaust system, which connects the manifold with the resonator. It lives for a long time, unlike its counterpart on the "Getz", since it is further removed from the engine and its additional protection. But if the protection of the engine compartment is jammed and touches the corrugation, it will probably gnaw a hole in it. Fresh air infiltrated confuses the oxygen sensor, and it fools the engine control unit. The Check Engine lights up, and gas mileage rises sharply.

SOMEONE'S Slippers

"Rio" has put together the details of the suspensions from their half-brothers and sisters: something from the "Getz", something from the "Elantra". From "Verna" I received rear shock absorbers leaking to 40 thousand kilometers; they also rattle. The knocks can be dealt with by placing foam rings under the boot. First impressions of the car are very positive. The engine picks up temperature much faster than my Opel and keeps it on longer after switching off. The transition from 90 horses to 123 is very felt. I tried it on a Moscow highway, the revs are moderate, the engine runs easily. I drive 120 km / h, but I feel like 80 km / h in my Opel.

The suspension works really well. The music sounds no worse than I had before, but there I invested a lot for this, and here everything is already there. Connecting a phone via bluetooth is a convenient thing. The engine is almost inaudible. No aerodynamic noise. There are a bunch of all kinds of heating, but it is impossible to assess now, in winter we will.

Cons: the wheels are clearly audible, they blur the impression. During warming up, vibration is felt, I also felt it yesterday, when I made my way to my garage in traffic jams, mainly in 1st gear. Let's see what the running-in will give. The new plastic of the interior, of course, smells, but this is not at all the smell that I felt in the new Renault Dasters. After them, my face burned until the evening, although I am not allergic.

Of the advantages, I note the appearance, the pleasant interior decoration. Clear gear shifting. They say it's still warm in winter - check it out. The radio receiver deserves special praise, has never stopped talking anywhere. A spacious shelf behind the passengers - it is good to carry seedlings to the dacha.

It is not possible to start briskly and butt at traffic lights. The clutch pedal is gentle. The motor at the bottom does not pull, the moment is stretched. Modern look, the interior has become larger, but not much. They wanted a mechanic, but no longer in this configuration. I had to take a machine gun, and it was right - it switches clearly and smoothly, and the consumption did not increase significantly. With a full tank, it is enough for 750 km of run on a computer. In real life, I think it will not be much different.

The suspension has become better, softer, the very thing on our roads. Logan is, of course, far away, but not the same as in the last one, where every joint was felt on the body. Added parking sensors, bluetooth, nice things. Lens headlights shine with a bang. Heated rear seats for children in winter is good.

Surprised in comparison with the previous version, the lack of thermal and noise insulation of the hood ... although the engine is quiet. The spare wheel is full-sized, but stamped! Although the car on disks, and in the last disk lay.

Textile. The package bundle, although it is indicated as "Prestige", has become worse in material, it is treated with covers. Where can I buy?

Transmission. We took the mechanics, since the automatic transmission on the last car dulled a little. The pedal had to either be pressed to the floor or released in order for the transmission to finally switch. It is impossible to catch the middle position.

Engine. Enough power for overtaking. The gear is lower and you can overtake. Compulsory motor third party liability insurance is cheap, 4,200 rubles per year, for two with his wife.

Exterior. The car looks great, and live better than in the photo. We took white, because it combines both beauty and practicality.

Interior. Ergonomic and beautiful. I like the red backlight. The dashboard is beautiful, the lighting turns on smoothly, gradually. The multi-wheel pleases. The plastic on the torpedo is easily soiled (it is better not to touch it with your fingers once again). The salon is spacious, but two big men in the front seats in down jackets will be cramped in winter.

Noise isolation. Fine. It is good in the city, on the highway it is noisy, but not critical. In the future, I want to glue the arches, doors, hood, trunk. Together with the replacement of regular speakers. It feels like you're playing low quality music.

Consumption. On the highway 1000 km long, the consumption was 5.7-6.0 liters. Around the city in winter 10 liters. In frosts with warming up 12-14 liters.

What we liked:
1. Powerful engine, overtaking is confident, especially when pushing a kickdown.
