During a test drive on real Italian roads between Rome and Forli, a 125-horsepower all-wheel drive Ford EcoSport The 1.5 TDCi turned out to be not the most efficient crossover among its peers. However, we also appreciated its other qualities and abilities besides fuel consumption.

Read also about Ford:

For example, tall and spacious salon crossover. Together with a decent list of standard equipment, as well as a variety of options, it partly allows this Ford to be forgiven for its average fuel consumption. 4.8 l/100 km (20.8 km/l) on our standard 360 km route. In general, this value in itself is not so bad, but compared to the modest appetite of its closest competitors, it does not look impressive. By the way, during the entire trip from Rome to Forli in a small diesel Ford we spent on fuel 24.5 euros.

Those who turned out to be more thrifty

Now let's compare it to those who beat our test Ford EcoSport in terms of efficiency - other compact diesel crossovers that consumed less than 4.8 l/100 km. Often these were front-wheel drive SUVs. The 120-horsepower Fiat 500X 1.6 Multijet 4X2 previously performed on a par with the test subject, and only the 140-horsepower Jeep Renegade 2.0 Multijet 4WD turned out to be more voracious, which in tests in 2016 consumed an average of 5.45 l/100 km (18.3 km/l ).

The remaining competitors (direct and closest) turned out to be more economical in reality. In particular MINI Cooper D ALL4 Countryman averaged 4.65 l/100 km (21.5 km/l), the 110 hp consumed 4.6 l/100 km (21.7 km/l), and the 115 hp - 4.5 l/100 km (22.2 km/l). The single-wheel drive Opel Crossland X 1.6 Diesel 120 hp performed excellently. (4.15 l/100 km - 24.1 km/l), Peugeot 2008 BlueHDi 120 and Renault Captur Energy dCi 110. The last two averaged 3.6 l/100 km (27.7 km/l).

Everything you need

We tested the Ford EcoSport 1.5 TDCi EcoBlue AWD crossover with powerful diesel, all-wheel drive and 6-speed manual transmission in the ST-Line configuration is almost the most expensive and richly equipped version of this model. Among the options that required additional payment in the test car: Blue Lightning body color, 18-inch alloy wheel disks, parking sensors, rear view camera, Winter Pack and sunroof. The total cost of the SUV is 31,600 euros.

But regardless of options and in simpler versions compact crossover Ford guarantees its owner proper comfort on any road surface, power and traction so that you will never find yourself in a difficult situation, as well as good quality materials in the interior and in the trunk, although some of them could be improved. We have no complaints about the EcoSport when traveling on highways.

Efficiency without unpleasant surprises

The diesel Ford EcoSport demonstrates more than satisfactory and stable fuel consumption figures. On the way from Rome to Forli, the SUV consumed an average of 7.5 l/100 km (13.3 l/100 km), which is not bad for a car with all-wheel drive. When driving in a mixed cycle, it turned out to be about 5.5 l/100 km (18.1 km/l), but on the highway it’s a little more - 6.9 l/100 km (14.4 km/l).

Moving at the most economical pace with a constant low speed, EcoSport showed minimal diesel fuel consumption 4 l/100 km (25 km/l). In the complete opposite of this, the most difficult mode, when climbing a hill, the consumption was 21.5 l/100 km (4.6 km/l). After 900 km of travel, which the diesel Ford EcoSport covered in our editorial office, the average consumption over a long period was recorded on the car’s on-board computer 5.8 l/100 km (17.2 km/l).

Ford engine EcoSport in Russia it is a 4-cylinder, 16-valve 1.6-liter gasoline engine, or a more powerful 2-liter unit. In other markets, the crossover is offered with an advanced three-cylinder Ecoboost turbo engine with a displacement of only 1 liter, or a 1.5 liter diesel engine.

There will be neither a turbo engine nor a diesel engine in Russia. Although these engines are much more economical than those currently available in our country. The first gasoline engine of the Russian Ford EcoSport with a volume of 1.6 liters is equipped with a Ti-VCT system, mounted transversely. The power system uses electronic distributed fuel injection. Intake system And valve mechanism have an independent variable valve timing system. Detailed Specifications engine further.

But the 1.6-liter engine is available in Ecoboost crossovers only with front-wheel drive. At the same time, there are already two gearboxes to choose from: a manual with 5 steps and a 6-speed robotic automatic with double clutch from the PowerShif series.

Real reviews from owners about fuel consumption on Ford Ecosport ( Ford EcoSport):

  • For some reason, all my life I have only bought cars like crossovers. I can explain this choice by the fact that the cars look quite large, have a large interior volume and the engine power does not fail, but this is still not an SUV, which means fuel consumption is always normal for an economical person. When I bought a Ford Ecosport, I couldn’t even imagine that the car would not only meet all the parameters that were important to me, but would even surpass them. For example, this concerns fuel consumption. Behind for a long time driving after the purchase, I did not see large consumption figures, even if you overload the car, stand in traffic jams, warm up the engine in winter or turn on the air conditioning, the car’s appetites are still within acceptable limits. If we talk clearly about the numbers, then I have a car with an engine capacity of 1.6 and manual transmission gears, so fuel consumption is always approximately 9 liters in the average cycle. I took the maximum value, and there are fluctuations from 7-9 liters, and depending on external factors. Still, even 9 liters, I think, are too small for a crossover, which is why you can only be glad that every kilometer on a car saves you quite a bit of money.
  • Ford Ecosport has long appeared on automotive market and at the same time immediately became popular among consumers. I learned this when I was choosing new car, went through a lot of sites, and, according to reviews, I didn’t find a better copy. Already when I came to the car showroom, I understood why everyone fell in love with this model so much, because appearance really impressive. Checked specifications, learned about fuel consumption, and immediately began to draw up documents for its purchase. After purchasing this model, the first thing I did was get used to the car and only then began to check fuel consumption and compare real indicators with numbers on paper. Surprisingly, they are exactly identical, if you do not increase the pressure on the car using external factors. Naturally, if you stand in a traffic jam for more than one hour, then fuel consumption will immediately begin to rise, but in the city Ford spends no more than 8 liters per hundred kilometers. At this time, on the highway, consumption is already reduced to 6 liters or even less, if you constantly monitor your driving style. Driving style, by the way, from the outside may seem like an unnecessary thing, but in fact, only a constant change in speed can significantly change fuel consumption during the journey, more problems I haven't noticed it in a long time of traveling.
  • Problems with your Ford Ecosport? No, I haven't heard of those. Even before buying this model, all I heard from everyone was that the car shows and proves that only it is worthy of purchase and that you don’t even mind the money, and the cost is not small. In addition, after the purchase, I myself began to understand why, everyone praises it so much vehicle, because the car, from engine to fuel consumption, shows simply phenomenal results. I would like to find at least one problem so that the car does not seem like a fairy tale, but there really are none, and I would buy myself this car again if I had a choice. What is most impressive, of course, is the elaboration of the manufacturers, the engine and fuel system, because fuel consumption is even higher than expected. In the city, a car can spend about 8-9 liters per hundred kilometers, depending on the quality of the road and the weather. On the highway, these figures already drop to 5-6 liters. That is, it is immediately clear that even with economical passenger cars, this model can easily compete.
  • Buying a Ford Ecosport at first seemed unconvincing to me, because the first month was promised low consumption fuel in the city could reach up to 12 liters per hundred kilometers, but this was just the engine running out. Now I can say with absolute certainty that the car can be called one of the most economical in the world in terms of engine power and consumption. Now fuel consumption has stabilized and in the average cycle the indicator stopped at around 6-7 liters no more. In winter, these figures may increase by one liter due to weather, roads and engine warming up.

The Ford EcoSport crossover, released in 2003, was developed on the platform of the previously produced Fusion station wagon and was supposed to provide the company with participation in the mini-SUV segment. The first generation of these mini-crossovers focused exclusively on Latin America, but after a fairly high level of sales, it was decided to develop sales of the second generation Ford Ecosport, the production of which began in 2012, throughout the world.

Ford Ecosport 1.6

The Ford EcoSport mini crossover is equipped with a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine Duratec Ti-VCT from the Sigma family. This naturally aspirated engine developed a power of 125 hp. and reached a torque of 140 Nm. Either a 5-speed transmission was offered for it manual transmission, or 6-speed automatic.

Fuel consumption of Ford EcoSport 1.6 per 100 km. Reviews

  • Boris, Saratov. Quite an interesting and inexpensive crossover from what is on the market. Not bad quality assembly, economical and at the same time powerful enough for such a car, the 1.6 liter engine is excellent for both the city and the highway. In the city it spends no more than 9-10 liters of gasoline, on the highway almost 7 liters.
  • Dmitry, Tambov. I have a 2015 Ford EcoSport with a Duratek 1.6L engine and a stick. With its compact dimensions, for a crossover, it has a rather impressive ground clearance– 200 mm, normal even for an SUV. The assembly is high quality, pleasant and comfortable salon, the engine power of 120 horsepower is quite enough. The trunk is small, but I’m not going to carry cement or potatoes in it. In mixed mode the consumption is 8 liters, in winter a little more.
  • Alexey, Rybinsk. The last car before the Ecosport was the Focus 2 - so in the Ecosport the build quality of Ford did not let us down. Trend+ equipment, additional tinting, heated windshield, parking sensors and other little things. The interior is the same as in the new Focus - I looked at it in the showroom when I was choosing a car. The 1.6 liter engine is rather weak - in terms of dynamics it’s nothing at all, it accelerates very slowly. But on the highway it goes quite confidently, while it consumes only 5-6 liters, in the city it’s more - up to 9 liters.
  • Alexander, St. Petersburg. Despite the fact that this is a typical urban SUV with all the attendant shortcomings, plus a rather weak engine, the choice was completely conscious and I still don’t regret anything. Ford EcoSport is a good car for the money, economical, average consumption in the combined cycle is up to 9 liters.
  • Zinaida, Odintsovo. I looked at several cars and liked Ford the most. On the road it behaves predictably, the suspension absorbs all the road irregularities well. The engine power is enough for me, and it consumes an average of 9 liters of gasoline - not that much.
  • Vadim, Surgut. Ford Ecosport, 1.6AT, 2016 Not bad economical crossover with a flow rate of 8-9 liters in summer and up to 10 liters in winter. But the controls are a bit dull, plus don’t bother with the option of electric steering wheel heating - I ordered it, but as it turned out, there really isn’t such an option, an unpleasant fact of deception.
  • Denis, Ufa. Among the advantages of Ford EcoSport I would like to note high ground clearance and correspondingly high seating, plus very good sound insulation. Before this, I drove a car of this class and this price more than once - the noise there is much worse. Among the minuses, I would like to note the small volume of the trunk and the fact that the engine power is not enough during long ascents - you have to keep the revs high. But around the city normal car, with a flow rate of 8-10 liters.
  • Nikolai, Berezovsky. After the purchase, I was unpleasantly disappointed that drum brakes were installed at the rear - it seemed quite modern car, and here is such an anachronism. The seats are also uncomfortable, my back gets very stiff on long trips, and the plastic in the cabin is hard. Among the advantages, I note the high ground clearance and economical engine - 8.5 liters in the city, 6.5 liters on the highway.

Ford EcoSport 2.0

The most powerful versions of the Ford EcoSport mini-crossover were offered with an in-line 4-cylinder 16-valve naturally aspirated Duratec HE PFI 16V Flex. This 2-liter engine had a power of 145 hp and its torque was 184 Nm. The engine was installed only on all-wheel drive configurations and worked with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Ford Ecosport – relatively new model in the list of Ford cars. It appeared on the markets only in 2014. The car is a small SUV that is sold all over the world. Assembly is also carried out in all parts of the world. The basis for the Ford Ecosport was another model of this automaker – the Fiesta.

Official data (l/100 km)

Engine Consumption (city) Consumption (highway) Flow (mixed)
1.0 MT 125 hp (Mechanics) 6.6 4.7 5.3
1.5 MT 112 hp (Mechanics) 8.1 5.2 6.3

2.0 MT 122 hp 4x4 (mechanics) 11.4 6.5 8.3
1.5 MT 90 hp diesel (mechanical) 4.9 4.4 4.6

The car is equipped with only one diesel engine power unit. This is a one and a half liter tubing unit that produces a power of 90 Horse power. It is controlled only by a manual gearbox operating in five modes. Fuel consumption per 100 km for this engine is set at 4.5 liters. Concerning gasoline engines, then there are already more of them - as many as four. The smallest, but also almost the most powerful, is the liter one, which has as many as 125 horses. It also comes only with a manual transmission, but consumes only 5.4 liters of gasoline.

The second equipment option is a one and a half liter engine with a peak power of 112 horsepower. Here it can already be equipped with a six-speed gearbox automatic transmission, however, already consumes up to 6.5 liters of fuel. Next comes the configuration with a 1.6-liter engine, where the power is 122 horsepower. It is also paired with a manual or an automatic transmission. The passport consumption here is 7.1 liters.

Well, the last, largest and most powerful option is a two-liter power point. It produces 140 horsepower, is equipped only with a manual transmission, but has an all-wheel drive system. This package also has high consumption– 8.4 liters.

Owner reviews

“I have long wanted to change my sedan to something more powerful and spacious. The Ford Ecosport model evoked my most confidence. It looks stylish, and is not expensive, and the technical characteristics are also in order. I chose the top version, which has all-wheel drive, since I’m going to go fishing, and there’s no way without it. I've been riding for almost a year, no problems. Everything works clearly and stably. It starts easily both in winter and in summer. The engine, although not the most powerful, can handle even a fully loaded car. It’s a pity that he spends a lot - almost 11 liters in the city,” writes Yaroslav from St. Petersburg.

“I feel only positive emotions from the car. It looks good, is well equipped, and handles and accelerates great. In the city, it picks up speed from traffic lights faster than many “sports” cars. It is also very spacious, which allows you to unload a bunch of things and go somewhere on a trip. The only negative is fuel consumption. In the city I spend up to 12 liters, on the highway - 8,” this is a review of Egor’s car from Smolensk.

“I’ve owned the car for a little over two years. During this time, nothing ever broke. The car manifests itself only with the best side. I mainly travel only around the city. I take my friends with me and go shopping and other places. It’s a pity that there’s not much space in the back; it’s difficult to fit someone oversized, but for my friends, what’s available is quite enough. But the trunk is spacious, all purchases fit without problems. I don’t have the most powerful version, so I chose the one with less consumption. In the end, I get about 7 liters,” wrote Alisa from Tyumen.

“The model is more of a crossover than an SUV. To obtain four-wheel drive, you have to pay extra for a more powerful version with a very power-hungry motor. A dubious idea, since it drives not so bad even in the front, but driving on heavily washed-out roads will be a problem. And in general, I recommend using the car only in the city, that’s where it belongs. It is quite comfortable, and many functions installed in the cabin will allow you to relax on the road. The engine will not be able to provide fast driving on the highway, but it will consume little fuel. My consumption rate is 7 liters,” writes Vasily from Novgorod.

“They gave me a car for my birthday. This was my first car, so I was incredibly happy. And I don’t care that this is the most basic version – it’s enough for me. I'm not going to race, so I don't care about technical data. The main thing is that it consumes little fuel. The car also looks very stylish. But what I like most is the interior. It is very convenient here, all machine controls are within easy reach. But there is not enough space in the back; large people will not be as comfortable as if they were sitting in the front. Oh yes, I spend about 6 liters of fuel,” reports Tatyana from Vladimir.

“The car was taken as a second car for trips somewhere out of town. The calculation was that for little money we would have a powerful device, with spacious interior and good maneuverability. According to these indicators, the model let us down a little, but still it doesn’t look bad off-road. But all of our travel equipment does not fit into the trunk; some of it has to be transported in the cabin. A pleasant point is the diesel consumption - only 5 liters,” this is Andrey’s review from Kazan.
