Ground clearance or ground clearance is one of the important characteristics of the car, determining the distance from the road to the lowest point of the central part of the car (for example, differential, axle, gearbox or engine protection).

When choosing a car, many people look at this parameter and take it into account. This is understandable - for Russian roads and off-road travel, high ground clearance will have a positive effect on cross-country ability. Cars with very low ground clearance will simply not be able to pass in some places. It is especially important to choose a car with high ground clearance if you live in a village or plan frequent trips to rural areas and off-road terrain.

If you like a certain car model, but are not satisfied with its ground clearance, it makes sense to check with car dealerships what varieties of this model are available. Many models of modern imported cars come in different versions.

Often for Russia, with our bad roads, many parameters are adjusted, including ground clearance. That is, if for Europe the clearance value is one, then for the Russian version of the car this value may be completely different. Also pay attention to the presence of engine protection. If there is one, check whether the ground clearance has been specified taking this fact into account.

If there is no protection, then think about whether you will install it (in most cases, yes). When installing protection, the ground clearance may decrease by approximately 5-15 mm. There is also the concept of “PPD - bad roads package”; manufacturers of imported cars either include it in a certain model or not. The amount of ground clearance also depends on this.

How can you increase the ground clearance of your car?

If you bought a car and its ground clearance is insufficient, and you keep hitting some bumps and uneven roads, then you can increase it. To do this, you can buy special spacers to increase ground clearance, which are made of hard rubber and are installed forward, under the rear springs and under the rear shock absorbers.

Typically, the thickness of such spacers is 2-3 cm, and their price is around 1500-2500 rubles for a complete set; the cost may be different, depending on the quality of the material and the car model. But do not forget that installing spacers changes the driving performance of the car and affects wear resistance. If there is a good reason for this, bet. For example, if you drive with a loaded rear axle most of the time, it may be worth installing rear spacers to increase clearance.

It is also possible to install Kevlar protection instead of the usual iron engine protection; its thickness is much smaller, and the material allows it to be located in close proximity to the engine crankcase.

Another way to increase ground clearance is to install larger wheels. For example, if the factory wheels on a car are R16, then you can replace them with R17 wheels. Keep in mind that you need to change both the disc and the tire. A gain in ground clearance when replacing wheels can be achieved within 1-2 cm (10-20 mm).

In general, by and large, if there are no compelling reasons for buying a car with high ground clearance, then you shouldn’t bother with it. Excellent and stylish models of modern cars leave a lot of positive emotions and feelings. Whether or not you catch one of the bumps on our “smooth” roads depends on your driving skills and your sanity. So buy the model you like and enjoy life! 🙂

Every year more and more high-clearance sedans appear on the Russian market. For our conditions, such passenger cars are more relevant than ever, since the driver’s desire to have a foreign car and not strain the chassis and suspension often does not coincide with reality. However, among the large assortment of today's products, several suitable options can be identified. In this article we will look at the three tallest passenger cars.

1st place

"Volkswagen Polo 1.6"

This car is a sedan with high ground clearance, which is rightfully considered the leader in the rating of such cars today. It is as much as 17 centimeters. This is even a few centimeters more than crossovers, so the Polo is positioned as a car with the highest ground clearance. Sedans of this brand have many other advantages, for example, price. Volkswagen Polo 1.6 is considered the most affordable imported sedan on the Russian market. Its cost in the basic configuration is 449 thousand rubles. For this price, the driver receives an indestructible suspension, a reliable engine and a comfortable, and most importantly, safe interior.

II/III place

"Kia Rio"

In second place in the ranking of “high-clearance sedans” is the Kia Rio. This is perhaps the most popular “state employee” in the world, changing all the stereotypes that a car costing 450-500 thousand rubles always has a sparse design and an uncomfortable interior. Among the Kia Rio engine line, both gasoline and diesel units, automatic and manual transmissions are available. In the basic configuration, the car has a lot of electronics and security systems. But the most important thing about it is the ground clearance. The Kia Rio is good for Russian conditions because its ground clearance is 16 centimeters. This “all-terrain vehicle” can be safely driven not only on asphalt, but also on dirt roads. In any case, you should not refuse trips to nature. The design of the “Korean” is also not in last place. When the car debuted, it caused real delight among the public. In fact, for 489 thousand rubles (that’s exactly how much a Kia Rio costs in the basic configuration), you get a real business sedan with elements of luxury and sportiness. By the way, in appearance it is almost indistinguishable from a true business sedan of the same brand called “Optima”. Millions of Russians have already been convinced of the attractive design, powerful suspension and high ground clearance of the “Korean”.

"Nissan Almera"

Third place in the ranking of “high-clearance sedans” was taken by the Japanese car “Nissan Almera”, which has been in mass production for more than 10 years. The latest updated generation is famous for its high ground clearance - 16 centimeters. But the Nissan Almera attracts car enthusiasts not only with its ground clearance, but also with a number of other things. This is a comfortable and spacious interior, pleasant design, economical engines, rich technical equipment and multiple safety systems for the driver and his passengers. Such a car costs 429 thousand rubles.

These were all sedans with high ground clearance, having an optimal price-quality ratio.

Considering that public utilities work far from ideally, we decided to compile for you a selection of high-clearance cars that will drive along snowy roads and will be able to park on the side of the road when it has turned into a snowdrift.

This rating contains the TOP 7 most affordable cars with ground clearance of more than 200 mm. Please note that when compiling the rating, we used official data from manufacturers, and there is no uniform method for measuring ground clearance. Therefore, depending on the measuring point, the actual ground clearance may differ significantly.

Lada 4×4

  • Ground clearance: 205 mm
  • Price from 329,900 UAH.

Lada 4×4 (as the old Niva is now called) is difficult to perceive as a new car, but 40 years after the model was born, it is still in service. There are three configurations, in fact they differ slightly. You will be surprised, but even the basic list of equipment of the Russian “dinosaur” contains some benefits of civilization - power steering, ABS and power windows. But the price is rather high - 329,900 UAH. However, this is the cheapest full-fledged SUV on the Ukrainian market. The following equipment levels differ only in the appearance of alloy wheels (314,900 UAH) and air conditioning (349,900 UAH).

Chevrolet Niva

  • Ground clearance: 200 mm
  • Price from 379,900 UAH.

The basic equipment is quite poor - there are no ABS or airbags, bumpers and mirrors are unpainted. There isn't even air conditioning. It’s good that they installed electric windows in the front doors and electrically adjustable and heated mirrors. Pillows, preloaded belts and ABS – you won’t find all this in the “base” either. The equipment, which is more or less adequate to modern realities, called GL, costs inadequate money - 419,900 UAH. And the top version LE+ costs as much as 454,900 UAH.

Renault Duster

  • Ground clearance: 205..210 mm
  • Price from 394,020 UAH.

Perhaps this is the most popular SUV in Ukraine. All thanks to the excellent combination of price, features and reliability. At the same time, only the basic front-wheel drive version can be called a “SUV”. The model with all-wheel drive is very close in capabilities to “adult” SUVs: thanks to good geometry and considerable suspension travel, as well as first gear, which is designed to partially replace the low range, it will not fail even in serious mud.

An important trump card of the model is its price. In the basic version, it will be a front-wheel drive car with a 1.6 liter gasoline engine (110 hp) and a manual transmission in the Authentique configuration. If you have more money, you can look towards all-wheel drive versions and diesel. There is also an option with a preselective EDC robot – but these are only front-wheel drive.

UAZ Hunter

  • Ground clearance: 210 mm
  • Price from 437,000 UAH.

Another example of a long-lived conveyor in our rating. Someone will note that the model has been produced since 2003, but in fact, this car inherited most of the design elements from the UAZ-469, which was produced since 1972. What helps it survive for 45 years and is still in production today is its phenomenal cross-country ability, simplicity and maintainability of design, and low cost - this is the cheapest frame SUV. Now Hunter is equipped with a 2.7 engine with 128 hp. and a transmission with rigidly connected front wheel drive. In our market, Hunter is sold in one single configuration, in which, among the benefits of civilization, only power steering.

UAZ Patriot and Pickup

  • Ground clearance: 210 mm
  • Price from 437,000 UAH.

The UAZ Patriot family appeared in 2005 and became a breakthrough for the manufacturer. This car is much more like a car in the modern sense: it has a height-adjustable steering wheel, air conditioning and ABS. And for an additional fee, a multimedia system with navigation and a rear view camera and even airbags can be installed. In terms of cross-country ability, the Patriot is unlikely to be inferior to the Hunter, because structurally they are quite close. The engine here is the same - 2.7. True, in the top-of-the-line Patriot new model, it already develops 135 hp. By the way, the Patriot new equipment can be truly rich: cruise control, climate control, multifunction steering wheel with leather trim, parking sensors and many other options.

Nissan X-trail

  • Ground clearance: 210 mm
  • Price from 569,830 UAH.

Bright appearance, spacious interior and excellent driving characteristics are what the Nissan X-trail can attract its buyer. By the way, the model has always been considered a good rogue among crossovers and the current generation is no exception. Three engines are now offered: petrol 2.0 (144 hp) and 2.5 (171 hp) and diesel 1.6 (130 hp). Many are expecting the appearance of a more powerful two-liter diesel engine, but such a unit is not yet offered. The base car will be front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive versions are also available. Transmissions – “mechanics” or continuously variable CVT. 4 configurations: VISIA, ACENTA, N-CONNECTA and TEKNA. The basic Visia is quite ascetic: there is no “climate” (simple air conditioning), a minimum of additional systems. But the Acenta already has almost everything you need: there is climate control, an improved audio system, and electrically adjustable seats and mirrors.

Mitsubishi Outlander

  • Ground clearance: 215 mm
  • Price from 629,900 UAH.

Outlander is a fairly large car, a real family crossover. In this generation in our market, it is equipped with two in-line “fours” 2.0 (145 hp) and 2.4 (167 hp), a non-alternative CVT variator and can be either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The car is quite richly equipped already from the basic version. In addition to ABS and ESP, which are already standard for all, there is a hill start assist system, two-zone climate control, heated front seats and a heated windshield in the wiper area. A car with all-wheel drive has several operating modes and quite confidently tackles light off-road conditions, and thanks to the energy-intensive and at the same time quite comfortable suspension, you can quickly drive on bad roads.

Modest dimensions and low fuel consumption are accompanied by a tolerable tax burden and reasonable insurance costs. To help those whose budget is limited, here we have collected a dozen of the most affordable models, with the price of the basic version ranging from 400 thousand rubles.

"Gili-MK", from 349,000 rubles.

For more than three years, the plant in Cherkessk has been producing the MK sedan, and in the summer of 2011, production of the front-wheel drive MK-Cross hatchback based on it began, with ground clearance increased to 175 mm and an unpainted plastic body kit. It is certainly worth paying only 40 thousand extra for a car that is much more functional in our conditions. In the past, the sale and service of MK was carried out by the special division “Red Dragon” of the Rolf company, but at the end of 2010 the distribution agreement was terminated - now the Chinese are independently expanding the dealer network.

Comfortable suspension; ground clearance 175 mm (“MK-Cross”)

Noisy engine and transmission; sluggish dynamics; cramped sofa; lack of height adjustment of the driver's seat; poor visibility in the hatchback; unclear gear shifting; poor corrosion resistance; expensive spare parts

Our choice:“MK-Cross-1.5-Comfort” RUB 389,000.

Engine: 1498 cm3; 94 l. s./6000 rpm; 13.1 kgf.m/3400 rpm

Temperament: 165 km/h; 6.3–7.8 l/100 km

Possible options: MK (sedan)

“ZAZ-Vida”, from 400,000 rubles, KAR from 6.05 rubles/km

The previous generation Aveo, whose production started in Ukraine last winter, in addition to the nameplate of the Zaporozhye Automobile Plant, received a new name “Vida”, which means “victory” in Latin, as well as a power unit from Chery-Bonus/Veri. In Russia, hatchbacks and sedans are sold in a single configuration, which includes air conditioning, a driver airbag, power steering and a modest power package. The hatchback is 10,000 rubles more expensive than the sedan, but it cannot be called definitely more practical: in the 5-seater version, the trunk volume of the five-door is 100 liters less - 220 versus 320 liters, and its transformation is not very convenient.

Energy-intensive suspension; affordable price; decent ground clearance of 160–165 mm

Lack of version with automatic transmission; extremely limited choice of trim levels

Our choice: 1.5SX RUB 400,000

Engine: 1497 cm3; 109 l. s./6000 rpm; 14.3 kgf m /4500 rpm

Possible options: hatchback

“ZAZ-Chance”, from 275,000 (420,000) rub., CAR from 5.79 rub./km

The Ukrainian car differs from the Lanos primarily in its engine. Under the hood you can find a 1.5-liter Korean Chevrolet engine and a 1.3-liter unit from the Melitopol plant, and at the end of last year a 101-horsepower Ecotek appeared, which is paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. . A hatchback is 10 thousand more expensive than a sedan, but it is more convenient when transporting large cargo, which is very important for a budget car that claims to be the only one in the family.

Affordable price

Fuzzy operation of the MCP; mediocre dynamics; low build quality

Our choice: 1.3SX hatchback RUB 320,000.

Engine: 1299 cm3; 70 l. With. / 5500 rpm; 11 kgf.m / 3000–3300 rpm / min

Possible options: 1.4 l (101 hp); 1.5 l (86 hp); sedan

“Lada-Granta”, from 259,000 (373,200) rubles, KAR from 4.88 rubles/km

Sales of the sedan with the internal VAZ-2190 index began in December 2011. The basis of the car was the modernized Kalina platform - with an almost identical base and width, the Grant is 22 and 10 cm longer and higher, respectively. At first, you could only buy modifications with a manual transmission, but last summer dealers began to have versions with an automatic transmission from a Japanese company "Jatko." At the same time, the basic Granta with automatic transmission includes a 98-horsepower engine, front air bags, ABS, power steering and air conditioning.

Energy-intensive suspension; affordable price; good looks; presence of automatic transmission

Queue to buy; assembly flaws; the only body type

Our choice:“1.6‑Norma” 337,300 rub.

Engine: 1596 cm3; 87 l. With. / 5100 rpm; 14.3 kgf m / 3800 rpm / min

Temperament: 167 km / h; 7.3 l / 100 km (average)

Possible options: 1.6 l (82 and 98 hp)

“Lada-Kalina”, from RUB 295,900, KAR from RUB 5.28/km

The development of the machine began back in 1993, but mass production started only in 2004. In terms of characteristics and equipment (front air bags, ABS, air conditioning, power accessories), the Kalina is almost on par with cars of foreign brands, and noticeable shortcomings in workmanship and ergonomic errors are compensated by the low price and available spare parts. True, you should choose a Lada with caution: 2 airbags are available only with the most powerful engine, which will require an additional payment of 80 thousand.

Energy-intensive suspension; affordable price; fast and economical engines

Build errors; miscalculations in ergonomics; gearbox operation is far from ideal; lack of automatic transmission

Our choice:“1.6-16V-Lux” 5‑door. RUB 377,800

Engine: 1596 cm3; 98 l. With. / 5600 rpm; 14.8 kgf m / 4000 rpm / min

Possible options: 1.4 l (89 hp); 1.6 l (81 hp); station wagon

“Lada-Largus”, from RUB 349,000, KAR from RUB 5.29/km

The world first saw the roomy station wagon built on the Logan base in 2006 - that’s when the Dacia-MCV appeared. Six years after its debut, the car found a second life on the Tolyatti assembly line under the name Lada-Largus. The impressive wheelbase made it possible to place three rows of seats in the cabin, and the trunk volume (700 liters in the 5-seater version) can be increased to almost two and a half cubic meters. Queues immediately formed for the car, in which those wishing to purchase a Largus would have to wait for at least six months.

Great price; spacious and well-finished 7-seater saloon; huge trunk; energy-intensive suspension; commendable smoothness; good sound insulation

Long line to buy; limited maneuverability; ergonomic flaws; modest dynamics

Our choice:“1.6‑Norma” 409,500 rub.

Engine: 1598 cm3; 84 l. s./5500 rpm; 12.6 kgf m /3000 rpm

Temperament: 156 km/h; 9.3 l/100 km (average)

Possible options: 1.6 l (105 hp)

“Lifan-Breeze”, from RUB 334,900.

The first passenger car from one of the world's largest motorcycle companies debuted in 2006. "Breeze", known in its homeland as "Lifan-520", is assembled at the Derways plant in Cherkessk. The machine can be equipped with any of two motors. But the more powerful licensed Tritek, which was previously installed on the Mini, is no longer supplied to Russia. A well-equipped 106-horsepower modification with a more solid power package can be considered optimal.

Spacious interior; spacious trunk

Mediocre interior finishing materials; weak 1.3 liter engine; no passenger airbag

Our choice: 1.6СX sedan RUB 374,900

Engine: 587 cm3; 106 l. With. / 6000 rpm; 14.0 kgf.m / 4800 rpm / min

Temperament: 170 km / h; 13.0 s (0–100 km/h)

Possible options: 1.3 l (89 hp); hatchback

"Renault-Logan", from 349,000 (500,000) rub., CAR from 5.62 rub./km

The Logan, produced in Russia, has high-quality assembly, an attractive price, a spacious interior and a huge trunk of 510 liters. And the sedan body is held in high esteem by us. Also worthy of praise is the exceptionally energy-intensive suspension and peppy engines - even a 75-horsepower engine is enough for this Renault. True, it’s unlikely that anyone will like the spartan basic configuration. But for reasonable money you can buy a Logan with decent equipment. Well, the new Logan, like the Sandero, may appear on our roads at best at the end of this year.

Durable, energy-intensive suspension; good price; spacious interior and huge trunk; reasonable prices for maintenance and spare parts; unpretentious high-torque engines running on 92 gasoline

Exceptionally poor basic equipment

Our choice:“1.4‑Expresion” 431,800 rub. = Expression + air conditioning and safety package 1

Engine: 1390 cm3; 75 l. With. / 5500 rpm; 11.4 kgf.m / 3000 rpm / min

Temperament: 162 km / h; 13 s (0–100 km / h); 5.5–9.2 l / 100 km

Possible options: 1.6 l (84 and 102 hp)

"Renault Sandero", from 359,000 (468,000) rub., CAR from 6.14 rub./km

The hatchback looks more interesting and fresh than the Logan, on the basis of which it is built. The Sandero compensates for its less spacious trunk (320 versus 510 liters) with greater flexibility, allowing you to fold a sofa - the Logan has this option only in the Prestige 1.6 version for 444 thousand. And the excellent suspension seems forgiving even on the worst roads. The car has three engines, two gearboxes and five trim levels, of which we definitely recommend Stepway. It has higher ground clearance - 175 mm, and an impressive list of equipment for reasonable money.

Durable, energy-intensive suspension; close to ideal combination of price and quality; spacious interior; reasonable prices for maintenance and spare parts; unpretentious high-torque engines running on 92 gasoline

Budget interior decoration; queues at Stepway

Our choice:“1.6-Stepway” 484,000 rub.

Engine: 1598 cm3; 84 l. With. / 5500 rpm; 12.6 kgf.m / 3000 rpm / min

Temperament: 163 km / h; 12.4 s (0–100 km / h); 6.1–10.2 l / 100 km

Possible options: 1.4 l (75 hp); 1.6 l (102 hp)

"TagAZ-S10", from 379,900 rubles.

Production of the car, which is a slightly retouched Chinese JAC-A138-Tujoy sedan, began in Taganrog in the spring of 2011. Its design was developed by the Italians from Pininfarina, and the car debuted in China in 2008. The engine is essentially a copy of the Mitsubishi engine. Despite the far from dumping price, the basic version of the “Economy” does not even have a driver’s air bag, and therefore we believe that if you have already decided to buy, it is better to pay an extra 25 thousand for the “Comfort” - in addition to passive safety equipment, there is an extended electrical package.

Energy-intensive suspension

Miscalculations in ergonomics; assembly flaws; rather high price; the only power unit; no airbags in the basic version

Our choice: 1.3‑MT2 404 900 rub.

Engine: 1332 cm3; 93 l. With. / 6000 rpm; 13.9 kgf m / 4500 rpm / min

Temperament: 158 km / h; 5.1–7.7 l / 100 km

Possible options: No

“Cheri-Bonus/Very”, from RUB 332,999.

Also known in its homeland under the names “Falvin II”, A13 and even “Storm-2”, the liftback (similar to a hatchback sedan) replaced the “Amulet” in China in 2009. And he came to us last spring from the assembly line of the Zaporozhye Automobile Plant under the cheerful name “Bonus”, although in Ukraine the car is sold as “ZAZ-Forza”. A nice appearance and a spirited engine are combined with a cramped interior for tall riders and mediocre road habits. The Very hatchback built on its basis is exactly 10,000 rubles more expensive.

Until the roads in our country improve and the climate changes, any car that even slightly resembles an SUV will always attract the attention of Russian car enthusiasts. Even if we are talking about very small “pseudo-all-terrain vehicles,” by which we mean inexpensive city crossovers based on B-segment cars or hatchbacks and compact vans of comparable size in a special off-road design - with increased ground clearance, a plastic body kit, additional underbody protection and etc.

They attract with good equipment and functionality, maneuverability and compact dimensions, brutal appearance and high seating position... The fact that some models do not even have all-wheel drive is of little concern to buyers. After all, in such cars they rarely travel beyond the city beyond their dacha, so there is no particular need for high cross-country ability. And the car itself turns out to be cheaper, easier to maintain and more economical without the 4x4 system.

In this review we will talk about the seven most attractive models in the price segment from 600,000 rubles. The upper bar is differentiated - single-wheel drive versions in the basic version, as a rule, cost 800,000 rubles, all-wheel drive versions go a little abroad at 900,000 rubles.

“Citroen C3 Picasso Trekker”:
comfort and space

Debut: 2012
Restyling: none
Wheelbase: 254 cm
Ground clearance: 17.5 cm
Dimensions: 407.8x173x167.2 cm
Trunk volume: 385-1,506 l

- “C3 Picasso Trekker” in Russia is represented by one front-wheel drive modification with the most powerful 1.6-liter VTi gasoline “four” in the range (115 hp) in combination with a six-speed robotic transmission.
- The chassis does not differ from that used on the basic compact van “C3 Picasso”. But there is plastic anti-gravel protection for the edges of the wheel arches, decorative “Jeeper” linings on the lower parts of the front and rear bumpers and plastic side moldings.
- The “C3 Picasso Trekker” has six airbags, traction control, electronic dynamic stabilization, ABS, ISOFIX mounts in the rear seats.
- Standard equipment includes an audio system, panoramic windshield, sliding and folding sofa with backrest tilt adjustment, double luggage compartment floor, front electric windows, air conditioning, rain and light sensors, fog lights, cruise control.
- The model can be equipped with dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, USB and Bluetooth interfaces. And when ordering the “City” package, rear electric windows, rear parking sensors, folding mirror drives and heated mirrors will be added to the equipment list.
- All C3 Picasso Trekkers are offered with a textile interior, roof rails and special 17-inch alloy wheels. For an additional fee, the car can be equipped with a glass roof and a steering wheel with improved leather and chrome trim.

“Citroen” decided to embellish the already original “C3 Picasso”. It was equipped with a different front bumper and an elaborate decorative grille, and the design of the wheel rims was changed.”

Yuri URYUKOV, “Klaxon” No. 19 ‘2012

Exactly a year ago, an “all-terrain” version of the Citroen C3 Picasso compact van was presented at the Moscow Motor Show. However, there is no need to talk about any increase in cross-country ability for the model, which received the prefix “Trekker” in its name. The ground clearance was not increased, the drive remained only on the front axle. The model received only stylish silver bumper covers, plastic protection for the arches and door sills designed to better protect the body from gravel flying from under the wheels.

But even such a purely “artistic” modification deserves attention. After all, this car, despite its single-volume layout and rounded, feminine shapes, looks very jeep-like. It has a “lobed” hood, roof rails, a solid body height and a large glass area, and its standard 17-inch wheels look impressive. The advantages also include a high seating position with excellent visibility, a large supply of free space inside and a very smooth ride. The interior will definitely not disappoint - it looks modern and is made of high-quality materials.

By the way, Citroën connoisseurs probably know about the existence of a real all-terrain version of the C3 Aircross - the same C3 Picasso, but with higher ground clearance and a spare wheel mounted on the rear door. However, this modification is only made in Brazil.

"Kia Soul":
stand out from the crowd

“The main improvements are hidden under the hood. From now on, only six-speed gearboxes are available for “Soul”, which are combined with upgraded 1.6-liter engines.”

Yuri URYUKOV, “Klaxon” No. 09 ‘2011

The Korean “Kia Soul” looks so all-terrain that others often mistake it for a small SUV. But in essence, this is a typical B-segment passenger car with front-wheel drive, which differs from its counterparts - urban subcompacts - only in its two-volume layout with expanded interior space and a deliberately brutal appearance. He got the platform from the Kia Rio hatchback, in the development of which specialists from the German design center in Rüsselsheim took part. And along with it - quite cheerful driving manners. In terms of ride roughness, this model is the most severe in the review, and the diesel modification also turned out to be very dynamic in terms of dynamics. Young drivers, we think, will appreciate her sporting habits.

“Soul,” meanwhile, is multifunctional and is available in a wide variety of configurations. The interior is notable for its unusual design solutions, but at the same time it is rational. Large-diameter wheels, short overhangs, coupled with sufficient 16-centimeter ground clearance allow the car to climb curbs and drive through deep holes. If necessary, the car also turns into a cargo van - with the rear seat back reclined, the luggage volume reaches one and a half cubic meters.

"Nissan Juke":
cool guy

Debut: 2010
Restyling: none
Wheelbase: 253 cm
Ground clearance: 18 cm
Dimensions: 413.5x176.5x156.5 cm
Trunk volume: 207-830 l

- “Juke” is equipped with petrol 1.6-liter “fours”. The regular naturally aspirated version produces 117 hp, the detuned version produces 94 hp, and the turbocharged version produces 190 hp. A CVT may be preferred to a manual transmission.
- All-wheel drive is available only for the most powerful version of the Juke in combination with a continuously variable transmission.
- The standard set of safety features consists of four airbags, ABS and ESP. Curtain airbag - from XE configuration.
- The 94-horsepower model is standardly equipped with heated seats, an on-board computer, electric windows, an audio system and, for an additional fee, air conditioning (no other options are provided). In the most affordable “variable” version, air conditioning is already included in the equipment. A higher level will be fog lights, climate control, sports seats, electric drives and heated mirrors, a dual-din audio system with Bluetooth or “Nissan Connect” navigation.
- For 117- and 190-horsepower models with “mechanics” the initial version is quite advanced “SE” or “SE Sport” with cruise and climate control. Among the extended configurations, “Nismo” stands out, which has not only special interior trim and full aerodynamic equipment, but also a chassis reconfigured in a sporty manner and a direct-flow exhaust that increases engine power.
- Only the most budget “Juke Base” cannot boast of alloy wheels, handles and mirrors painted to match the body, or leather steering wheel and gearbox. All other models have fine finishing, and the top versions sport a faux suede interior, spoilers and chrome exhaust tips.

“Juke” invariably touches everyone who gets into this car for the first time. The compact “fitting” interior is unusually combined with a high seating position.”

Ruslan TARASOV, “Klaxon” No. 4 ‘2013

For the Nissan company, the Juke model became perhaps the most daring and successful project. The innovation lies in the fact that what was made was not just another functional “pseudo-all-terrain vehicle” based on a passenger car, but something the opposite - a miniature five-door hatchback, but with a strong, energy-intensive suspension, with really high ground clearance and all-wheel drive. Moreover, the 4x4 system in the Juke is implemented non-standardly, using two clutches on the rear axle shafts. This solution not only increased the Juke’s cross-country ability, but improved its handling due to the steering effect that occurs when torque is independently distributed between the rear wheels. In addition, it is on all-wheel drive models that a multi-link suspension is used at the rear, which gives the car reliable and precise behavior. And they will not be superfluous, since its range includes very fast and powerful modifications.

The Juke is interesting inside. Some design ideas are borrowed from the motorcycle world. The center console is curiously designed with a dual-mode control panel and a color display. It can display the functions of the air conditioner, and can be used to switch dynamic programs, show boost pressure, the amount of overload and other “flight” parameters. After all, Juke is more than a car. This is a small city rocket that will feel at home even outside the metropolis.

"Opel Mokka":
crossover with intelligence

Debut: 2012
Restyling: none
Wheelbase: 255.5 cm
Ground clearance: 17.5 cm
Dimensions: 427.8x177.7x165.8 cm
Trunk volume: 356-1.372 l

- In our market, “Mokka” is currently represented by only three petrol modifications with equal power of 140 hp. The economical version “1.4 Turbo” comes with a six-speed manual and a start/stop system. Models with an unpretentious 1.8-liter naturally aspirated engine are available with a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission.
- Only one modification of the “Mokka” is deprived of the all-wheel drive system - the base 1.8 with a manual transmission.
- The level of passive and active safety is reduced only in the initial model, where four airbags, ABS and ESP are standard. For the rest, you can order curtain airbags, distance control and lane control.
- The “Essentia” version offers the necessary minimum. The car will have luggage rails, crankcase protection, a foldable sofa, air conditioning, front electric windows, heated and electrically adjustable mirrors, an on-board computer and cruise control.
- “Enjoy” adds heated front seats and steering wheel, rear power windows, climate control, fog lights, automatic high beams and a rain sensor. The “Cosmo” has adaptive bi-xenon, front and rear parking sensors, and a 230-volt outlet. Options include a sunroof, navigation, rear view camera, bicycle transport system, and ergonomic seats.
- All models are equipped with daytime running lights. Alloy wheels and improved textile upholstery are available starting with “Enjoy”. Combined interior, which, if desired, can be ordered in a fully leather version - starting with “Cosmo”.

“The suspension is soft and elastic thanks to specially shaped springs and double silent blocks. The car does not sway on the gentle waves of the autobahn, nor does it tilt too much in turns.”

Ruslan TARASOV, “Klaxon” No. 20 ‘2012

The most interesting and modern engineering concept is that of the German “Opel Mokka”. Formally, the model was based on the famous Chevrolet Aveo passenger car, but General Motors specialists comprehensively redesigned it. The new model's body has unusual proportions - it is narrow, but noticeably higher than that of its competitors. In profile, such a car looks like a real SUV, but it is very easy to maneuver in dense city traffic. This layout, which allows for the highest possible seating position, also provides advantages in visibility.

All crossovers with all-wheel drive at the rear, as a rule, use a complex multi-link suspension, but for the “Opel Mokka” a simple torsion bar design and a single torque distribution unit were developed - a rear differential combined with a multi-plate clutch. This made it possible to make the 4x4 system more than 60 kilograms lighter than usual, which had a positive effect on dynamics and efficiency. The model is also notable for its advanced adaptive lighting technology and on-board electronics. For example, when you order the “Opel-Eye” system, you get an assistant who will monitor your lane, but no one in the review has such assistants yet.

“Mokka” is distinguished by an imposing ride and a high level of acoustic comfort. Here you really feel like you are in a solid and generously equipped SUV.

Skoda Fabia Scout:
Travelers' club

Debut: 2009
Restyling: none
Wheelbase: 246.5 cm
Ground clearance: 14.9 cm
Dimensions: 403.2x165.8x149.8 cm
Trunk volume: 300-1.165 l

- Only one engine is available for the “Fabia Scout” - a supercharged petrol 1.2 TSI with a power of 105 hp. But there are two modifications - with a manual transmission and a DSG “robot”.
- Front-wheel drive only. But the Fabia Scout is well suited for off-road driving. The body is surrounded by a solid and durable plastic body kit that is not afraid of scratches.
- The basic version will only have front airbags and ABS. However, the surcharge for side airbags and curtain head protection is relatively small. Models with DSG come standard with ESP with expanded functionality - a rollback system and tire pressure monitoring.
- The model is available in a single version, which is called “Scout”. The list of standard equipment includes fog and lensed headlights, climate control, heated front seats, acoustic preparation from eight speakers, cruise control, four electric windows, a front armrest, a cooled glove compartment, and heated windshield washer nozzles.
- Options include stability control (for versions with a manual transmission), cornering headlights, an electric sunroof, a dual-din audio system with Bluetooth and an alarm system. And among the accessories there are parking sensors, navigation and much more.
- “Scout” is equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels and luggage rails, has an improved fabric interior with sports seats, pedal pads and leather-trimmed gear lever.

“The version of the 1.2-liter engine boosted to 105 horsepower is good without any reservations. With such a car, any road will become easy and pleasant - you will not feel a lack of traction.”

Yuri URYUKOV, “Klaxon” No. 6 ‘2010

The popular five-door Czech hatchback “Skoda Fabia” three years ago received an off-road modification “Scout”. It does not at all lay claim to the laurels of a conqueror of wild spaces, since it does not differ from the base model in ground clearance, drive, or anything else, but it is very successfully styled specifically as a sports SUV. The front and rear bumpers made of black plastic are complemented by spectacular silver inserts, longitudinal roof rails are installed on the roof, and beautiful 16-inch light alloy wheels with low-profile tires are installed in the wheel arches.

Compared to the regular versions, “Scout” also looks advantageous in terms of interior decoration. Already from the factory, it is equipped with sports front seats with a comfortable profile, an improved instrument panel and pedal pads. The quality of finishing materials is close to exemplary - even the most demanding customers will like it. The extended basic equipment matches the finishing. The only disappointing moment: the car radio is excluded from the list of standard equipment. But in the catalog of branded accessories you can find the desired options, including a navigation system.

The model is equipped with a modern 1.2 TSI turbo engine. But despite the relatively modest rated power of 105 hp, the Fabia Scout is very playful. After all, the car is lightweight, and the engine has solid traction at low speeds. The latter circumstance also makes the model one of the most comfortable to review, even on long trips.

"Suzuki SX4":
it's possible to go straight ahead

Debut: 2006
Restyling: 2009
Wheelbase: 250 cm
Ground clearance: 17.5 cm
Dimensions: 415x175.5x162 cm
Trunk volume: 270-1.045 l

- The “SX4” is supplied to Russia with a reliable 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 112 horsepower. Combined with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission.
- For models with front-wheel drive, you may prefer versions with “4x4”. A clutch with a locking function is responsible for distributing torque between the axles.
- In the initial models, the only safety equipment is inertia belts, front airbags, ABS and ISOFIX fastenings for child seats. Extended trim levels will include ESP, side and curtain airbags.
- All models are presented in two equipment options - basic “GL” and extended “GLX”. The first includes front electric windows, central locking, on-board computer, heated front seats, air conditioning, and audio system. The second version will have climate control, rear electric windows and fog lights.
- For popular front-wheel drive versions with automatic transmission, two more special configurations have been developed. “GL+” adds rear electric windows, foglights, a leather steering wheel and alloy wheels to the base. And in the “Rhino Edition” version, released in a limited edition, an advanced Japanese “Clarion” audio system with navigation, mudguards and direction indicators in the mirrors are installed.
- In terms of finishing, the “Rhino Edition” stands out with 16-inch wheels of a special design and improved textile upholstery. Initial models are devoid of chrome. They have stamped wheels and a polyurethane steering wheel.

“I’ll say it banally: I probably wouldn’t risk driving on such a route with another crossover. But behind the wheel of the SX4 I feel calm.”

Vadim KHUDYAKOV, “Klaxon” No. 7 ‘2010

Produced simultaneously in both Hungary and Japan, the “SX4” can no longer be considered a new product, but this car continues to be in high demand in all markets. It is the successful fruit of the cooperation between Suzuki and FIAT (in Europe, the same car is better known as the Sedici). The Japanese proposed their technical filling, borrowed from the Suzuki Liana model, for joint development. The Italians worked on the design, style and overall layout for it.

It is easy to notice, for example, that the model has the proportions of a typical urban five-door hatchback. But at the same time, the engineers managed to achieve in the “SX4” the spaciousness of a single-volume car and the functionality of a full-fledged crossover. Due to the small overhangs and increased ground clearance to 17.5 cm, the geometric cross-country ability is almost the best in the class. Models with “smart” all-wheel drive “iAWD” have an electronic imitation differential lock. All this allows the SX4 to overcome obstacles that would remain impassable for most of its review competitors. And it is for this all-terrain property that the model is valued most of all.

Three years ago, the car underwent a slight modernization - its engines, brakes, and interior trim were improved. True, versions with an automatic transmission remain a little noisy and not very economical due to the outdated four-speed transmission, but this design flaw is balanced by other advantages of the SX4: maneuverability and a soft, comfortable ride, reliability and endurance.

“Volkswagen CrossPolo”:
less is more

Debut: 2011
Restyling: none
Wheelbase: 246.9 cm
Ground clearance: 17.6 cm
Dimensions: 398.7x169.8x148.8 cm
Trunk volume: 280-952 l

- For the Russian version of the “CrossPolo” there is only one power unit option - a 1.4-liter naturally-aspirated gasoline engine with a power of 85 hp. The transmission is also without options - a seven-speed “robot” with two DSG clutches.
- 17.6 cm ground clearance and a powerful body protection belt expand the off-road capabilities of the model. But it is far from all-terrain vehicles - it is only front-wheel drive.
- The base includes ABS, traction control, front airbags, belts and ISOFIX fastenings. You will have to pay extra for electronic stabilization, side and curtain airbags.
- Standard equipment: electric windows for all doors, multifunction display, turn signals integrated into the mirrors, fog lights with cornering lights, radio preparation, athermal glazing, trunk with double floor, sports front seats.
- The choice of options is wide: heated seats, air conditioning or climate control, audio system, navigation, bi-xenon headlights, Park-Pilot parking system, rain sensors, winter package...
- “CrossPolo” is decorated quite richly. Bright interior decor, pedal pads, a steering wheel covered in perforated leather, and special textile upholstery that can be replaced with Alcantara are already included in the package. The exterior is complemented by 16-inch alloy wheels, silver mirror caps, roof rails and sporty protective covers on the bumpers, sills and wheel arches.

“The increase in ground clearance did not result in any unpleasant driving habits. The car was firmly built, concentrated and collected, and remains so.”

Sergey SOROKIN, “Klaxon” No. 2 ‘2012

“CrossPolo” can easily be mistaken for the smallest and cutest crossover in the Volkswagen model line. Designers from Wolfsburg put a lot of effort into turning the city baby “Polo” into a bright and sporty city “jeep”. They did not limit themselves to installing spectacular body kit elements - black bumpers with pseudo-aluminum “lips” on the bottom and massive protective covers on the wheel arches and sills. The car also received silver luggage rails, enlarged rims, and most importantly, a suspension raised by one and a half to two centimeters, which gave the “CrossPolo” a very respectable ground clearance for its size. Now, neither curb stones, nor bumpy dirt roads, nor gravel shelling are scary for it... But it is not worth storming more serious off-road obstacles. The model has front-wheel drive. Underbody protection is not provided in the basic version. And the only available gearbox - a seven-speed DSG - isn't too keen on rough driving over rough terrain.

The advantages of “CrossPolo” include the interior. The car is equipped with comfortable anatomical seats with pronounced lateral support and beautiful textile upholstery. With “CrossPolo” there will be no problems in parking - the dimensions are modest, maneuverability is the best in the review, “Park-Pilot” with sound and visual proximity signals is available for an additional fee. The third advantage is precise controllability on any surface. And it doesn’t matter that under the hood is the engine with the most modest power in the review. This is the case when less is more...
