More than 250 thousand crossovers are produced in Russia every year. Against the background of the crisis in the economy, the volume of production of these cars in 2015 fell by 39.2% in the country. Compared to other models, crossovers are the least likely to reduce their sales levels.

The relatively stable demand for vehicles of this type is explained by the fact that crossovers incorporate much of what car enthusiasts like so much. They have large clearance, which is very important for Russian roads, a high driver's seating position and excellent visibility of highways when driving, excellent cross-country ability, increased comfort and interior capacity. Their price is slightly lower than large SUVs, which makes them more affordable for the buyer.

Crossover: new or used?

In 2016, new crossover models should arrive on the Russian automobile market, which have significantly changed their features and technical characteristics. It was during this period that many manufacturers decided to radically reconsider their model ranges.

Among the top ten cars expected on the market:

  • New domestic crossover Lada XRAY, accompanied by the updated Chevrolet Niva
  • Koreans produce Kia Sportage, Hyundai Creta
  • Japanese - Infiniti QX30 2017, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport
  • Chinese - Chery Tiggo 5, Tiggo 3
  • Americans - Jaguar F-PACE
  • Europeans - Skoda Snowman, Volkswagen Tiguan

The best-selling used crossovers in Russia remain domestic models of UAZ Patriot and Lada 4x4. Over time, they lose the least percentage of their original value.

Among foreign cars in 2015, Russians gave their preference to economical crossover models.

Pros and cons of new and old cars

According to statistics, the demand for used cars is 2.5 times higher than the purchase of new cars. Reasons for this:

  1. The price of a used vehicle, which is significantly lower than a “fresh” model that has just rolled off the assembly line. For less money you can buy a luxury car, equipped with more options and safer
  2. Large selection on the used car market
  3. A crossover, with an increase in its mileage, significantly loses its price. After 2-3 years of operation, a new car becomes 40-45% cheaper

Advantages of a new car: a warranty on the vehicle, during the period of which the owner has the right to free repairs and replacement of spare parts.

Which crossover is better to buy, each owner decides independently based on his financial capabilities, priorities and likes. When purchasing a used car, it is worth remembering that the mileage displayed on the speedometer may not correspond to the real, actual value. The fresh paint may hide traces of an accident, and the vehicle itself may have been stolen. When buying a used car, you need to carefully inspect it and check the documents to ensure they match the vehicle being sold on the market.

One of the safest ways to purchase a used vehicle is to buy a car from a dealer network or at Japanese auctions.

What should you consider when choosing a used crossover?

The main criteria when choosing a used car are indicators such as:

  • technical condition, maintainability, availability of spare parts and components
  • model efficiency, engine wear
  • transmission condition
  • equipping with security systems

A car for the whole family

Many Russian families have long preferred to purchase crossovers for shared trips. The optimal price for such a car is in the niche of 18 to 30 thousand US dollars. Most often, Russians turn their attention to crossovers such as Ford Kuga, Suzuki SX4 New and Nissan Qashqai.

The main advantages that push the buyer to choose these cars: price, quality, safety, comfort level, interior capacity and good cross-country ability.

Ford Kuga

The optimal car for long-distance family trips along Russian highways. It has a powerful engine, high ground clearance, and is fully adapted to the climatic conditions of Russia. The price of a car is from 1 million rubles.

Suzuki SX4 New

A family crossover with increased reliability, excellent handling, and a large interior. Starting price - from 995 thousand rubles.

Nissan Qashqai

A car with an attractive interior, thought out to the smallest detail. It has high quality workmanship, excellent technical characteristics, and is reliable. Starting price - from 850 thousand rubles.

The most economical crossovers

The most economical crossovers sold in Russia include:

  • Nissan Qashqai - fuel consumption with an engine capacity of 2.2 liters and large vehicle dimensions is only 6.5 liters in mixed driving
  • KIA Soul is a car that Russian consumers mistakenly classify as a crossover due to its exterior design. Fuel consumption is 7.2 liters for a mixed trip. Unit volume - 1.6 l. Starting price - from 690 thousand rubles

  • Mazda CX-5 is a Japanese sports car, equipped with several engine options and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel consumption - 6.2 l. Starting price - from 1 million rubles
  • Skoda Snowman. What pushes you to choose a Czech car is not only its quality and the starting price - from 800 thousand rubles. The creators of the crossover managed to give the body attractive features and make the interior very comfortable.

The most reliable crossover

Determining the reliability of cars is carried out not only by technical experts of vehicle manufacturers, but also by insurance companies. The latter do this with special care and interest to determine the amount of likely payments. The assessment is made on a special scale, which takes into account a number of technical characteristics, the frequency of possible breakdowns, build quality and a number of other indicators.

The English company Warranty Direct compiled its top list of the most reliable crossovers in 2015.

The reliability check was carried out by insurer experts:

  1. They put the Suzuki Grand Vitara in first place. The vehicle showed excellent results. Having traveled 59.8 thousand kilometers, it required various types of repairs 38 times
  2. The second was the Honda CR-V. The car showed the result - 50 breakdowns over 77.6 thousand kilometers.
  3. Hyundai Tuccon entered the ranking at number 3. The car traveled 83.2 thousand kilometers and broke down 78 times
  4. Number 4 was assigned to the Subaru Forester. He upset his fans with 81 breakdowns over 84.5 thousand kilometers.
  5. Next on the list: Kia Sportage with a lot of engine failures
  6. Nissan X-Trail with chassis problems
  7. Land Rover Freelander with frequent electrical faults
  8. Chevrolet Captiva
  9. Volkswagen Tiguan
  10. Jeep Cherokee. Mitsubishi Outlander is also experiencing engine problems

The best budget crossover in 2015

You can choose the Nissan Qashqai at least because, at a relatively low price, it has a respectable appearance corresponding to a premium class car. The Japanese gave their car intelligence that can efficiently perform many useful functions. The vehicle has excellent driving characteristics and a high reliability factor.

Together with him, the top ten included: Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester. They were ahead of Hyundai Santa Fe, Mazda CX-9, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Tucson and Subaru XV Crosstrek. Closing the top ten was the Volkswagen Tiguan.

The best luxury crossover in 2015

There are many more people who want to choose the Acura MDX than those who can pay for their dream. The economical beauty is sold in Russia from 3.5 million rubles. Ideal design, various design options, easy handling, high level of reliability and comfort. Owners cannot but be pleased with the car's quick acceleration, large interior space and smart electronics.

  • Lexus RX 350, Audi Q5 and Infiniti Qx500
  • Lagging behind: Porshe Cayenne, Volvo XC60, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Volkswagen Tauareg, BMW X5
  • Rounding out the top ten is the Audi Q7.

Over the past five years, crossovers (SUVs) have achieved impressive sales results and captured incredible market share. And these are not just words, but confirmed official statistics. If at the end of 2012 such cars accounted for 17% of sales, then if you look at the results of the first half of 2017, the SUV class already accounts for 38%. Interestingly, budget crossovers accounted for 61% of the total sales volume of all-terrain vehicles in 2012, and in 2017 - only 51%.

It would seem why in the “fat” year of 2012, by today’s standards, budget crossovers in Russia sold better than the middle class, while in the post-crisis year of 2017, budget SUVs and crossovers took up only 51% of sales in the SUV segment, although their low prices, on the contrary, should have attract more buyers? The answer lies in the fact that five years ago there were only six all-terrain vehicles on the list of best-selling models, but today there are already twelve of them.

Thus, the new generation of Toyota RAV4, which turned out to be extremely successful, took the lead from the list of brands in the higher price range. The Renault Kaptur appeared, although it was assembled on a well-worn Logan B0 trolley, but with a minimum price tag of 870 thousand rubles it can hardly be called cheap. Another serious “Japanese” came - Mazda CX-5. As a result, with the growing popularity of the SUV class, these models have taken over some of the sales of mid-size sedans that are traditionally in demand in our country and have “smeared” the share of inexpensive crossovers.

Budget crossovers in Russia - prices

So, what new budget crossovers are available on the Russian market today? First of all, let's define the concept of “budget” - how much is it? Five hundred thousand, seven hundred or a million? Or maybe one and a half million? Obviously, for each level of income the bar will be different, however, in our opinion, it would be logical to take the amount that the average Russian family with two working adults can accumulate (without taking into account any expenses) in 1 year. It is known that in 2017 the average salary in Russia did not fall below 35 thousand rubles, which means that the new budget crossover is one whose cost is about 700,000, in any case, not higher than 800,000.

Sales of SUVs for the first half of 2017
model brand quantity
Creta Hyundai 24 143
Duster Renault 19 809
RAV 4 Toyota 16 016
XRAY LADA 15 453
NIVA Chevrolet 14 436
Kaptur Renault 14 141
4x4 LADA 13 025
Sportage KIA 12 800
Tiguan VW 12 048
X-Trail Nissan 10 431
Qashqai Nissan 9 801
CX-5 Mazda 8 027

Naturally, in our review we will not be able to take into account budget crossovers of all brands presented on the Russian market. In addition, the prevalence of the model is also important for the buyer - the prices for service, spare parts, etc. will depend on this. But don’t worry - not a single best budget crossover will escape our attention, because we will again use the sales rating. As it turned out from the analysis of the TOP for the first half of 2017, at the moment we can only talk about five SUVs and CUV (crossover utility vehicle), the prices of which in the initial configuration are about 700 thousand rubles. and which are popular in our country.

TOP budget crossovers

Let's get straight to our rating. We will try to be very brief, but at the same time, to describe as specifically as possible all the advantages and disadvantages of each model so that after reading the list you will no longer have the question of which budget crossover to choose, which one is the best, which one is more reliable, and which one is The cheapest option is with an automatic.

#1 Hyundai Creta

Hyundai Creta is the best-selling crossover in Russia today. Appearing on the market only last year, he immediately pushed aside all his rivals with his elbows and ascended to the “throne”. Does this mean that Creta is the best budget car? It's possible. It is stylish, has all the advantages, including reliability, of the mega-popular compact city car Solaris (albeit, the first generation, since it is built on a common PB platform), boasts a capacious suspension and modern equipment.

The Creta also has some disadvantages - it is a very uninitiative base engine, an “empty” steering wheel and mediocre handling (especially at speeds above 100 km/h). But the main disadvantage of this budget crossover is its prices, even in the initial trim levels, which barely fit into our price category. The brutal, well-built and athletic Creta in the cheapest version costs RUR 799,900. For this price, the buyer will receive a front-wheel drive car with a 1.6-liter 123-horsepower engine and a manual transmission. An automatic transmission is only available in the Active package for RUR 949,900, which is not at all budget-friendly.

#2 Renault Duster

Once the sales leader in the SUV class in Russia, now this “French” takes an honorable second place, having never recovered from the blow from the “Korean” Creta. However, Duster still has gunpowder in its flask and is still loved by Russian motorists. Strict and strong, with notes of military style, this budget crossover can offer its owners the reliability of the B0 platform, which is far from new and very simple, but has been proven over the years and, it seems, an ideal balance of handling and cross-country ability.

True, maneuverability at high speeds, rolliness and hard plastic interior, as well as an outdated automatic transmission can hardly be credited to the assets of this indomitable off-road fighter, but the starting price tag of Duster is 639,000 (1.6 l, 114 hp, manual transmission 5 , 4x2). For the cheapest modification with the same outdated 4-band automatic transmission you will have to pay 949,990, and the cheapest Duster with all-wheel drive costs 759,990.

Full list of prices and configurations of Renault Duster official price list.

#3 LADA X RAY

In third place in our rating is the product of our beloved and in every sense expensive flagship of the domestic automotive industry, AvtoVAZ, the LADA X RAY crossover. A car from a popular brand with a strange name appeared in Russia only in 2016, but this budget crossover cannot be called a 100% new product, because it is based on the platform from Logan, already familiar to us from the Renault Duster, which turned 15 years old this year. This all-terrain hatchback with handling inherited from the French, good dynamics (with a 1.8 liter engine) and a well-tailored interior is truly capable of captivating with its modest beauty and pleasant price tag.

The initial cost of the fruit of the Russian-French engineering genius is 599,900 “wooden” for the X RAY with a 1.6-liter engine with 106 horsepower and a 5-speed manual transmission. An automatic transmission is not available for the model, but for 710,900 you can get a modification with a 5-speed robotic manual transmission. All-wheel drive is not provided at all.

The main disadvantages of the X RAY are the miniature trunk with a volume of 361 liters, poorly thought-out aspects of the ergonomics of the driver's seat and the rear sofa, which can comfortably accommodate only two adult passengers. All configurations and prices of X RAY are available in full price list.

#4 Chevrolet Niva

This long-liver does not want to fall out of the ranking, although over the past five years it has lost the lion's share of clients. Sales have fallen five times since 2012, and yet at that time the Chevrolet Niva was not just “one of” - it was the best SUV in Russia in terms of sales that year. Today “Shniva” rests in fourth place, awaiting a replacement, who, unfortunately, is in no hurry due to financial difficulties.

So what can be credited to Chevy Niva? Of course, the price is 588,000 rubles for the initial configuration. Yes, it doesn’t drive on asphalt, as they say, but on the off-road, few even the more serious “rogues” are able to compete with this car. Unfortunately, when the road begins, all the advantages in the form of a high ground clearance of 240 mm, a short wheelbase and small overhangs turn into disadvantages. We forget about controllability and silence in the cabin, opening the door to frequent minor breakdowns.

Bottom line

Summing up our TOP budget crossovers in Russia, we’ll give the palm to Renault Duster. Despite the fact that at the end of the first half of 2017, not as many motorists decided to buy it as the number who chose the Hyundai Creta - this is a very worthy car. For 760 thousand you will get an all-wheel drive car with very good capabilities off a good road surface, economical and reliable.

If you need a budget crossover with an automatic transmission, then you will have to choose the Creta, since the “ancient Greek” automatic transmission with four ranges in the Duster is not for everyone. In other words, if you choose a crossover that is not only moderately priced, but also modern inside, the Creta wins, but if you need unpretentiousness and reliability, but in a solid body, then only Duster is here.

LADA X Rey, in truth, can only be classified as an SUV with a stretch - there is neither all-wheel drive nor impressive ground clearance. A tall hatchback, but stylish in appearance and very inexpensive, and also quite nice in the interior. However, for city dwellers, especially young people, this pseudo-crossover from AvtoVAZ is perfect, and with a top-end 1.8 engine with 122 hp. you can even “ignite” it.

And we categorically do not recommend choosing both generations of Niva for “civilian” use - neither the Chevrolet Niva, nor, especially, the LADA 4X4. These are wonderful cars, but only for their tasks, the city and highway are not included in any way. Avid hunters, fishermen, and lovers of driving around remote corners of Russia - this is the target audience of these cars, which pay the Niva and 4X4 with devoted love. The townspeople will “curse” their thoughtfulness, spartan interior and uncomfortable chairs.

Recently, crossovers have become increasingly popular. This tendency can easily be explained by the fact that such a car behaves perfectly both while driving around the city and during country trips.

The main advantages of the crossover are a spacious interior (from five to seven seats), comfort, high ground clearance, and the ability to connect to all-wheel drive.

In addition, a crossover is the optimal solution for a large family; it is especially relevant in sparsely populated cities with poor quality roads. You can also safely use it for a country holiday.

First of all, before you go to the dealership to buy a crossover, you need to decide for what purpose you are choosing it. Cars from the SUV segment are divided into 3 categories. Each group has its own individual characteristics.

  • Compact crossover. The main advantage of this group is its low cost, so most of those presented in Russia today belong specifically to the budget category. This option is mainly chosen by people living in cities, because with one click of a button the size of both the interior and the trunk changes. Compact cars are distinguished from large cars by less “gluttony”, and from other segments (sedan, hatchback, etc.) by good cross-country ability and all-wheel drive. The downside of a small crossover is that with such a car you are unlikely to venture into serious off-road conditions. The best representatives of compact crossovers sold on the Russian market: Toyota RAV4, Ford Kuga, BMW X3, and Renault Capture.
  • Mid-size crossover. The best crossovers in terms of price-quality ratio are representatives of this category. In addition, such machines are more versatile. The mid-size crossover is almost a full-fledged large SUV; the seats in the cabin are high (high driving position), but its main advantage, of course, is more economical fuel consumption. With representatives of the best mid-size crossovers, you can safely go into the forest without fear of off-road driving. From this category we should highlight: Honda Pilot, Ford Edge, Toyota Highlander, Skoda Kodiak, Renault Koleos and so on.
  • Full-size crossover. Representatives of this group are the best family crossovers. The interior of such a car can provide from 7 to 9 seats, but it is worth remembering that a large crossover consumes much more fuel than its smaller brothers. When choosing a full-size crossover, people are mainly guided by a spacious, comfortable interior, as well as the ability to travel in the most difficult off-road conditions. Note that the price range in this segment is the largest. The most prominent representatives included in this group: Volkswagen Touareg, Land Rover Discovery, Ford Flex and so on.

Official statistics: According to AUTOSTAT analysts, in the first 4 months of 2019, 36.7 thousand new cars in the SUV segment were sold in the capital. SUVs accounted for 50.8% of the entire Moscow market.

If you are wondering which crossover to choose so that price and quality combine well? First of all, you need to decide on the budget that you plan to spend on buying a car. Today, the most budget crossovers are produced by Chinese companies. Prices for the initial configuration start at 600 thousand rubles. If you set your sights on buying a middle-class crossover, then you will have to empty your family budget from 1 to 1.5 million rubles. A luxury crossover will cost at least 4.5 million rubles.

Rating of the best crossovers by reliability for 2019:

To ensure that the crossover you choose meets all your desires and expectations, pay special attention to these details:

  • Determine the approximate amount that must include future expenses for the car (insurance, maintenance, etc.).
  • Decide on a specific brand. Each manufacturer has its own pros and cons (for example, German Volkswagens are too hard, Hondas suffer from rapid body corrosion, and so on).
  • Decide what engine your crossover will be equipped with. Gasoline is more adapted to Russian weather, diesel is more economical and requires much lower fuel costs.
  • Remember, if you are a person of average income, then when purchasing, be guided by the efficiency of the engine and its power characteristics.
  • Experts recommend choosing a new crossover with impressive ground clearance, as well as fairly wide wheels.
  • Before buying a car, be sure to take a test drive or sign a test period agreement.

An inexpensive crossover is a great opportunity for Russian drivers to get a highly capable vehicle at an affordable price, which will cope perfectly with country roads, rough terrain and bad weather. It should be noted that a large number of crossovers are produced in the world today. However, only 10-15% can adapt to the harsh Russian roads. After all, in winter the car is faced with high snowdrifts, and in spring and autumn - deep puddles and mud.

Recently, crossovers have become popular due to their all-wheel drive system, excellent visibility, and significant ground clearance. And all this is complemented by the serious and solid appearance that such cars have. Naturally, its maintenance is much more expensive due to fuel consumption and a more complex design than passenger cars. Therefore, designers created simplified versions of SUVs - all-terrain vehicles. They have a monocoque body, good ground clearance for Russian roads and off-road qualities, in comparison with simple passenger cars. Moreover, the cost of such cars is lower than that of SUVs. If you want to purchase a powerful and fully equipped car on a limited budget, pay attention to used models on the secondary market.

Let's consider inexpensive crossovers that are suitable for Russian roads and will perform well in urban conditions.

Compact crossover Skoda Yeti

An economical crossover at a relatively affordable price, which is in demand among Russian drivers today. The model has many configurations, which allows each buyer to choose the one that suits them. The engines are available in three versions - 1.2, 1.4 and 1.8 liters (105, 122 and 152 hp, respectively). The model is all-wheel drive only when equipped with a 1.8-liter engine. The gearbox can be manual or automatic. The basic equipment, if desired and available, can be supplemented with an on-board computer and a modern audio system.

The cost of 1 km is 7.09 rubles/km.

The advantages of the crossover are the following:

  • economical fuel consumption thanks to a 7-speed robotic gearbox that fully utilizes the engine's potential;
  • it is inexpensive and available for service in almost all regions;
  • the ability to choose your car from 18 modifications;
  • sound insulation of the engine compartment is made of felt of different densities and microporous rubber;
  • thoughtful aerodynamics under the bottom;
  • the ability to individually regulate the air flow in the climate control system.

Yetty also has several disadvantages.:

  • the rear suspension arms are located low and therefore increase the chances of catching something under the wheels;
  • engines are demanding on the quality of gasoline and have difficulty starting if you do not follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and fill in with low-quality fuel;
  • the radiator requires protection from oncoming stones;
  • The 1.2 turbine operates at the limit of its capabilities and therefore, with constant use, its service life is reduced.

The car is considered the most economical of its class, as it consumes per 100 km:

  • 1.2 AT+MT – when driving in the city 7.9 l, on the highway – 5.9 l;
  • 1.4 AT+MT – when driving in the city 8.9 l, on the highway – 5.9 l;
  • 1.8 AT+MT – when driving in the city 10.1 liters, on the highway – 6.9 liters.

Regardless of the modification, the car has the following characteristics: a station wagon, the height of the trunk threshold is 71.2 cm, ground clearance is 18 cm, the fuel tank capacity is 60 liters. The model has an electromechanical power steering. The trunk has a volume of 410 liters.

The most affordable SUV Renault Duster

A budget cross-suv that today occupies a leading position in sales thanks to the modernization of the model, as a result of which the car has acquired higher reliability and comfort. The basic model has a small set of options, so buyers often choose the average configuration. However, even the most “stuffed” Renault Duster will cost no more than a million rubles. The car is very comfortable when driving in the city thanks to energy-intensive extended suspension, and also performs well off-road.

The cost of 1 km is 6 rubles/km.

The car has the following advantages:

  • reinforced body structure with programmed deformation zones;
  • ABS with emergency braking assistance system;
  • affordable price;
  • a wide range of configurations, the ability to choose gearboxes and engines (including diesel);
  • excellent handling on steep descents thanks to a 6-speed manual transmission with a shortened first gear;
  • high ground clearance, which is 200 mm.

Its disadvantages are the following:

  • weak door seals, which allows wind to blow inside the cabin;
  • The mirror adjustment is located under the handbrake lever;
  • very dirty and impractical upholstery of seats and interior (in lower trim levels)
  • short-lived battery, which after 2-3 years of operation begins to discharge quickly;
  • high probability of wire breakage under the bottom (rear axle connection) due to lack of protection;
  • Bushings and anti-roll bar struts receive increased load and quickly fail.

As for fuel consumption per 100 km, it consists of the following parameters:

  • 1.5D 4WD diesel – 5.9 l in the city, 5 l on the highway;
  • 1.6 4WD – 11 l in the city, 7 l on the highway;
  • 2.0 AT+MT 4WD – 10.3 l in the city, 6.5 l on the highway; restyled version (2015) – 8.7 l (AT) and 7.8 l (MT).

The volume of the car's fuel tank is 50 liters. Body type – SUV. The trunk of the car is quite spacious and has a volume of 475 liters. Brakes: front disc, rear drum. Renault Duster is available in various configurations - both with 4x4 all-wheel drive and with only 4x2 front-wheel drive.

Nissan Juke – the choice of young people

Nissan Juke is considered a relatively inexpensive and compact crossover, popular among both men and women. Its design is sporty and aggressive, and the size is not much larger than a standard hatchback. The car has several configuration options, but there are only four engines to choose from, namely 2 naturally aspirated gasoline engines, one turbodiesel and a charged turbocharged gasoline engine with 190 horsepower. Depending on the specific configuration, power can vary between 117-190 hp. The car is equipped with a manual transmission or CVT. An interesting fact is that the Juke's relative is the Nissan Micra, which is significantly smaller in size.

The cost of 1 km is 7.43 rubles/km.

Crossover advantages:

  • excellent handling and maneuverability;
  • thanks to all-wheel drive and multi-link suspension, good stability of the car on the road is ensured;
  • ground clearance of the front-wheel drive version is 190 mm;
  • Fuel consumption is quite low.

Minuses:

  • there are blind spots in the rear view (due to the features of the body);
  • after a long drive along the highway at speed, especially in cold weather, traction disappears, the engine does not respond to pressing the pedals;
  • front pads are enough for 30 thousand km;
  • The front door locks may freeze and the doors stop opening from the outside; after opening, they may not close from the inside.

The fuel consumption of this car per 100 km is considered quite economical and is:

  • 1.6 5-MT, 2WD – 7.5 l in the city, 5 l on the highway;
  • 1.6 5-MT, 2WD – 8.1 l in the city, 5.3 l on the highway;
  • 1.6 6-MT, 2WD – 9.1 l in the city, 5.6 l on the highway;
  • 1.6 7-variator 4x4 – 10.2 l in the city, 6 l on the highway.

The latest version of the Nissan Juke can be purchased with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The cost of all-wheel drive is higher, but this is how the best sides of this crossover are revealed. At the front, the car is equipped with standard MacPherson struts, at the rear – a torsion beam and guide arms.

Power and strength – Nissan Qashqai

A long time ago, the Nissan Qashqai crossover took its place of honor in the leading positions of the Russian market. This car is equipped with 1.6 or 2.0 liter engines (114 and 141 hp, respectively) and turbodiesels of 110 and 150 hp. After restyling, 1.2 and 1.5 liter power plants became available. The car can be equipped with either a manual transmission or a CVT. The all-wheel drive version has exclusively a 2-liter engine.

The cost of 1 km is 6.6 rubles./km.

Clear advantages of Qashqai:

  • increased ground clearance (for all-wheel drive versions it reaches 240 mm);
  • good traction for all engines;
  • exchange rate stability is maintained and therefore control is comfortable;
  • fuel is consumed economically, especially in diesel versions.

But Nissan Qashqai also has disadvantages:

  • the variator is not fully developed by the manufacturer and, as a result, is short-lived and works reliably only with careful driving;
  • low life of axle bearings due to unprotected bearing design;
  • users notice many blind spots;
  • the steering rack is unreliable and problems begin after 50 thousand km;
  • the engine and interior will have to warm up for a long time in winter;
  • for all-wheel drive modifications, the driveshaft crosspiece lasts about 80-100 capes. kilometers, after which you will have to replace the entire driveshaft.

A car's fuel consumption per 100 km depends on its configuration:

  • 1.2 DIG-T 6-mech (diesel) – 7.8 l in the city, 5.3 l on the highway;
  • 2.0 6-mech (gasoline) – 10.7 l in the city, 6 l on the highway;
  • 2.0 7-var (gasoline) – 9.2 l in the city, 5.5 l on the highway;
  • 2.0 7-var 4x4 (gasoline) – 9.6 l in the city, 6 l on the highway;
  • 1.6 dCi 7-var (diesel) – 5.6 l in the city, 4.5 l on the highway;
  • 1.5 dCi 6-mech (diesel) – 4.2 l in the city, 3.6 l on the highway.

The design of the Nissan Qashqai consists of a steel monocoque body, independent wheel suspensions on strong subframes, transversely mounted engines, front-wheel drive or automatically connected all-wheel drive for the 2-liter version. It has three operating modes - 2WD, Auto (automatic connection) and Lock (clutch blocking, automatically turns off at a speed of 30 km per hour). A special electric power steering is built into the steering shaft.

Depending on the vehicle configuration, equipment may include: 6 PB, ABS, air conditioning, electric mirrors and windows, active head restraints, headlights, heated front seats, etc.

Practical crossover Mitsubishi ASX

Mitsubishi ASX can have one of three engine options - 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liters, with a rated power of 117, 140, 150 hp. respectively. The first type comes with a manual gearbox, while the others may have a CVT. All-wheel drive is only possible with a 2-liter engine and a CVT; this equipment is quite expensive.

The cost of 1 km is 7.31 rubles/km.

The car has the following advantages:

  • increased ground clearance - 195 mm along the exhaust pipe under the rear suspension;
  • very economical fuel consumption;
  • excellent handling and geometric cross-country ability - approach angle is 19 degrees, departure angle is 31 degrees, the car has the smallest turning angle in its class.

But the advantages are complemented by disadvantages, including:

  • lack of manual transmission with all-wheel drive;
  • weak rear shock absorbers;
  • the suspension is too stiff for Russian roads;
  • problems with engine detonation;
  • poor sound insulation;
  • very thin metal.

Fuel consumption per 100 km is:

  • 1.6 MT – 7.8 l in the city, 5 l on the highway;
  • 1.8 CVT – 9.8 l in the city, 6.4 l on the highway;
  • 2.0 CVT – 10.5 liters in the city, 6.8 liters on the highway.

The vehicle's ground clearance is 195 mm. The trunk is not capacious enough according to driver reviews, but the volume declared by the manufacturer is 420 liters. Tank capacity – 63 l. The basic equipment in other modifications is complemented by a convenient climate control system, full power accessories, a battery with increased capacity, heated seats and mirrors for better visibility in the cold, and an engine starting system in cold weather.

Kia Sportage – a crossover for active drivers

The car of Korean origin, the Kia Sportage, has long been popular among Russians - both old and new generations. The vehicle configuration may include both a manual transmission and an automatic transmission. It is possible to purchase a Kia Sportage with all-wheel drive, but this option is the most expensive. There is also a diesel modification.

The cost of 1 km is 7.41 rubles/km.

Pros of the model:

  • excellent handling due to a small turning radius (short steering rack);
  • unpretentiousness regarding fuel, you can even use 92-grade gasoline;
  • smooth ride, good sound insulation and climate control system provide high ride comfort;
  • high safety thanks to electronic systems, airbags.

But the Kia Sportage also has some disadvantages:

  • fairly rigid suspension, which is designed for good roads;
  • presence of blind spots and poor visibility;
  • constant knocking in the suspension;
  • shock absorbers are prone to leaking;
  • the doors don't close well.

Fuel consumption per 100 km is as follows:

  • 2.0 MPI 4WD petrol (MT) – 10.9 l in the city, 6.6 l on the highway;

The buyer can choose a package with ABS, ESP, roof rails, traction control, audio system, air curtains and side airbags.

Choosing the ideal inexpensive SUV

Which crossover should you choose if your budget is limited, but you want to use resources efficiently to get a truly off-road and reliable car?

If you are purchasing a car for driving in urban conditions, then a powerful engine will not be practical. However, it will come in handy when traveling over rough terrain, in a village or on a country road. It is better to choose a higher ground clearance (3-4 cm above obstacles), since the car sways when driving and can catch objects with its bottom.

It should be noted that diesel engines are considered more economical, but gasoline engines are better adapted to the Russian climate. But do not forget that repairing diesel engines is always much more expensive.

It is better to initially set a budget for the purchase, which takes into account both the cost of the car and the costs of maintenance and insurance. You can pick up a car on the secondary market, thereby saving money.

It is possible to choose an inexpensive crossover and feel the advantages of an all-terrain vehicle. To do this, just decide on the model of the budget crossovers presented above and choose the modification that suits you.

SUVs are associated with off-road capability, strength, power and reliability. These qualities should be present in every car, and especially in SUVs, because a jeep is more than a city car.

SUV reliability rating

Today, the automobile market is full of various SUVs, and they are all different, there are crossovers, there are SUVs, and there are real SUVs, so we will divide SUVs into 3 categories:

  • lightweight SUVs with an engine capacity of less than 2.5 liters; these cars are characterized by weak engines and compact body sizes;
  • medium-sized crossover SUVs, engine capacity exceeds 2.5 liters, it is possible to place 7 passengers in such a car;
  • flagship SUVs with engines exceeding 3.5 liters have large body sizes.

Compact SUVs

Among light SUVs, the leaders in the rating are Japanese SUVs: Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, which are equipped with all-wheel drive, they behave well on country roads, on light, dry off-road conditions, and most importantly, they are very comfortable to drive around the city.

Compactness is their main advantage, and in general the characteristics of these crossovers correspond to a passenger car.

Medium SUVs

In 2011, the Volkswagen Touareg was considered the best-selling SUV of 2011. And even today, many who are thinking about buying an SUV for the first time, first of all look at the Touareg, because it is very similar to Porsche (beautiful exterior design, magnificent, spacious and functional interior), has characteristics almost like Porsche, and at the same time, the price of the Touareg is much less than that of the Porsche Cayenne. Thanks to its affordable price, the Touareg is considered one of the most economical SUVs.

Toyota Highlander is a Japanese SUV that has also captured a huge share of the international market for cars in this class. This car is equipped with a 3.5-liter engine that produces 273 horsepower. The Highlander is considered a family-friendly SUV, but it has its own predatory styling and sporty character.

Large SUVs

The most reliable SUVs are Ford vehicles: Explorer and Expedition. The main distinguishing feature of these machines is the impressive power and modern technologies that are used in the production of these machines.

The power of these cars is more than 290 horsepower, which is enough power to overcome quite difficult sections on the road and off-road.

In short, American SUVs are very reliable and require repairs in very rare cases.

Next we will get a cross-country ability rating for SUVs, because reliability and cross-country ability are two different concepts; not every reliable car can cope with driving through a swamp. And for an SUV, cross-country ability is an integral quality, without which an SUV will not be considered as such.

SUV cross-country rating

The cross-country ability rating is headed by the Land Rover Defender, Land Rover cars have been considered the best SUVs from time immemorial, and the Defender already has 50 years of experience in overcoming various obstacles where asphalt is out of the question.

Land Rover Defender is especially popular on farms, rescue services, in general, where you usually have to drive in the absence of normal roads. The Defender's power is 122 horsepower, it drives at a speed of 140 km/h quite calmly, but it has no competitors off-road.

Next comes the Nissan Patrol, which takes an honorable 2nd place in the category of real SUVs. Nissan Patrol rightfully takes its place among the best jeeps thanks to Japanese modern technologies and excellent quality. This car is equipped with an engine whose volume is 5.6 liters and its power is 405 hp. With.

The price of the latest generation Nissan Patrol is about 100 thousand American rubles, which is a lot, but this car is worth the money because it has a luxurious interior and excellent cross-country ability. In general, Nissan SUVs are known all over the world, and in Russia they are in good demand.

But we forgot about another off-road supercar - the famous Gelendvagen, which was created by the Mercedes concern. It also has a rich history of fighting off-road, and it will give many a head start, because, in addition to excellent cross-country ability, the Gelendvagen has a very powerful engine that can accelerate to hundreds are a bucket on wheels in 5 seconds!

Excellent performance for an SUV. Under the hood there is a 5.5-liter engine with a power of more than 500 horses. It’s very pleasant to drive such a car, everything in the cabin is strict, there is nothing superfluous. All-wheel drive makes you feel like the king of roads and off-roads behind the wheel of this jeep.

Rating of SUVs in Russia

Therefore, the Chevrolet Niva and simply Niva (Lada 4X4) are especially popular in Russia; these cars perform well off-road. To show the scale, here are some statistics: in 2013, about 60,000 Niva cars were sold.

In 3rd place is the Toyota RAV4, with 27,000 units sold.

And finally

We specifically did not include the Hummer in the ratings of the most reliable and off-road SUVs, because it is not like that. A Hummer is just a SUV; you can go shopping in it to a shopping center, but it won’t be very convenient to park in the parking lot due to its enormous size.

The ground clearance of the Hummer, both the 1st and the 2nd, is quite low, the weight of the vehicle is huge, so on severe off-road conditions the Hummer's wheels spin in one place, you have to call a UAZ Patriot in order to pull the Hummer out.
