Volkswagen cars are distinguished by their reliability, durability and high precision of all systems. This is also true of the Polo, one of the most popular models in Russia. German manufacturer... Many vehicles of this version use a gear mechanism. It is recognized as the most durable and resistant to mechanical wear.

Most car owners, referring to the factory reliability of the transmission, rarely go to a car service for routine maintenance. This, in turn, can lead to much more serious problems with the internal combustion engine itself.

Replacing the timing chain with a Polo Sedan according to the regulations in our car services

The timing chain requires periodic inspection and maintenance. According to the factory specifications, this mechanism on the Volkswagen Polo does not need to be changed throughout the entire period of operation of the car, if it is serviceable. Maintenance of Volkswagen and Polo Sedan cars, replacement of the chain, the regulations of which are established by the manufacturer, are carried out only if there is a suspicion of an obvious breakdown of the mechanism.

What do we offer when you need a chain replacement on Polo

However, the quality of the road surface becomes a real test even for the most reliable car brands. High loads, aggressive driving lead to the fact that the tension between the links decreases, the distance between the teeth increases. The chain slips, the whole timing is disrupted, which threatens to get into trouble with the car engine.

On the Volkswagen Polo Sedan, chain replacement may be necessary in two situations:

  1. When it is worn out.
  2. With its mechanical damage.

Attention! If this transmission mechanism is not replaced in time, the engine can get a serious malfunction (defects in pistons, valves, etc.)

In our car service we offer:

  1. Implementation scheduled maintenance Timing
  2. Diagnostics chain mechanism transmission.
  3. Directly replacing the timing chain.

During the last procedure, it is important to carry out a bulkhead and change all component parts... Sprockets and pumps, camshaft and crankshaft oil seals should also be checked.

Failure to do so increases the likelihood of re-assembly and costly repairs.

How to determine what is needed on a Volkswagen Polo Sedan chain replacement

The timing chain cannot break, but it is subject to significant stretching. Its total length grows, as the gap between the links increases, and backlash occurs.

The transmission tension becomes weaker, which threatens with engine problems. If not urgently repaired, a stretched chain can jump a few teeth. As a result, the operation of the entire gas distribution mechanism is disrupted. Valves, pistons, crankshaft are damaged.

To prevent such troubles, it is necessary to check the chain drive mechanism at each scheduled technical inspection.

The fact that the chain is close to wear can be determined through careful electronic engine diagnostics. But car owners rarely spend it. It is a common misconception that this part is "eternal" and its replacement is postponed until the last moment.

But it is worth contacting a car service immediately if the following signs of a malfunction appear:

  1. Fuel consumption increases unreasonably.
  2. Noise increases when starting the engine.
  3. Ignition misfires.
  4. The dynamics during acceleration of the car noticeably deteriorates.
  5. The check engine light came on.

The presence of these symptoms indicates the need to visit a car service, where professional technicians will diagnose the transmission mechanism and replace the Volkswagen Polo timing chain.

Several engines are used on Volkswagen Polo cars. When a 1.6 liter engine is installed on the Polo sedan, the timing chain changes on the drive. On engines with a volume of 1.4 liters, a belt is used. In order not to make a mistake in the drive, just look into the engine compartment. If the belt is installed, a plastic cover will be supplied on it, but if the drive is chain, it will be protected by a metal case.

Official dates of the manufacturer

It is necessary to timely replace the timing drive on the VW Polo car. If a belt break occurs, the engine will be seriously damaged and will require major repairs.

In case the belt is installed

Under normal operating conditions, the drive changes as planned after 90 thousand km.

During this time, it uses up its resource and becomes unusable. Particular attention should be paid to new parts, since the service life of the engine depends on their quality. The Polo sedan is a fairly popular car, therefore, accessories are produced by many manufacturers.

It is advisable to make the choice in favor of original spare parts: this is guaranteed to save money on possible additional repairs.

The initial symptoms of a worn timing belt are:

  • Slipping of the tension roller, followed by loosening of the belt tension;
  • Overheating of the motor, which leads to the boiling of antifreeze and frequent turning on of the fan to cool the coolant;
  • A peculiar noise when the motor is running;
  • Loss of power, engine stalls and won't start;
  • Pops appear in the injector receiver and muffler;
  • When examining the timing belt, cracks, wear of the profile track, mechanical damage were found.

All such malfunctions indicate a shift in valve timing and a weak drive tension. If at least one of the listed malfunctions is found, then you need to contact a service station to replace this important element engine.

Volkswagen polo with timing belt

How many times to change the timing belt for a Volkswagen Polo also depends on what driving style, while how often it is used extreme driving... In such cases, it is necessary to change the timing belt as it wears out and the profiles wear out.

When replacing the timing drive, it is necessary to immediately change other related parts of this mechanism. In this case, it is recommended to use original products with the following article numbers for VW Polo with 105 l CFNA engine.

Attention! Spare parts for Polo have different prices, which depend on the manufacturer. In this case, it is recommended, despite the overpriced, to choose a trusted and well-known manufacturer, so that after replacement there is complete confidence in the reliability of the installed parts.

If a chain is installed

Since 2015, the Volkswagen Polo has rolled off the assembly line with a chain drive instead of a belt. You can identify such an engine on VW Polo sedan cars by marking: CFNA - 105 hp. with.; CFNB - 95 HP with.

It would seem that a solution has been found about a reliable drive, because all the segments of such an element are made of metal, and it is undoubtedly stronger than the belt material. But is it really so? How many times during engine operation do you need to replace the timing chain with a Volkswagen Polo? Why do some manufacturers recommend changing the chain every 60 thousand kilometers or 3 years of operation, then every 30 thousand km or once every 2 years.

First, you need to take into account the volume of the engine. It is conventionally accepted on motors up to 1.4-1.6 liters to install a timing belt drive, and over 1.6 liters - a chain drive. The more powerful the motor, the greater the load on this element, and the more often the drive needs to be changed.

Secondly, on Volkswagen Polo cars, as a rule, a chain is installed on turbine engines, and a belt on simple atmospheric engines. At the same time, a hydraulic tensioner is used on motors with a turbine. Such a device automatically stabilizes the chain tension, that is, when this element rotates, the tensioner piston balances.

Attention! If the Polo has an engine with a timing chain drive, then the oil must be changed every 8-10 thousand km.

Always clean oil in a turbine engine is necessary so that small particles of debris, sawdust, etc. do not get into the chain links. And also the main reason is that debris does not get under the tensioner piston and it does not jam. Otherwise, if there is no balanced piston stroke, the chain drive will not work correctly and quickly fail.

Volkswagen Polo with timing chain

Moreover, in Polo sedan engines with a turbine, the oil burns much faster than on conventional power units. Thus, so that there is no question of when to change the timing chain drive to the Polo sedan, experts recommend focusing on the sound rather than mileage when diagnosing. As soon as the drive tension is released, there will be an increased characteristic noise from the engine.

Vitaly. 7.06.2018. Motor Volkswagen Polo Sedan 1.6. equipped with a timing chain. The metal circuit must eliminate openings and guarantee a longer service life. But in fact, it quickly stretched out and requires replacement by 70 thousand km. Need a blocker in this drive reverse, otherwise it works only due to the oil pressure, which is created only after the engine is started.

Oleg. 8.08.2018. Good afternoon. I have a motor with a timing belt on my VW Polo car, not a chain. With this run of 80 thousand km. I recommend replacing it, for such a drive it is perfectly appropriate.

Vladimir. 9.08.2018.Volkswagen Polo with gasoline engines 3.2 and 3.6 manufacturers write that it is possible to change the chain after 150 thousand km. But I have a drive chain replacement - a fairly common procedure, because it is single-row and pulls out quickly. I recommend that if you have a choice, then buy a car with a two-row chain, and then you can forget about the timing drive.

Vadim. 4. 08. 2018. The run for the Volkswagen Polo was 8 thousand km. An interesting observation: more fuel is consumed along the highway than in the city. The chain on the sedan is a two-row chain, its resource is guaranteed by the manufacturer 120 thousand km. So far, everything is fine, there are no significant comments.

Anatoly. 12.09.2018. The right wheel bearing was replaced by TO. After 65 thousand km. I began to notice the clatter of the chain on the cold one. I went to the service station for preventive maintenance - they say it's time to change your timing chain. I had to make a replacement, although according to the regulations it was still possible to drive the same amount.

Sergey. 18.09.2018. My Polo has already traveled 150 thousand km on one timing belt. And all due to my inexperience, it turns out, according to the instructions, it was necessary to change in 90 thousand km. Don't repeat my mistakes. However, I want to say thanks to the manufacturers. Yes, the belt rustled, vibrated, worn out, but did not break!

Symptoms: knocking when the engine is running, the engine is unstable, the engine stalled and no longer starts.

Possible reason: the timing chain is damaged.

Instruments: wrench set, socket set, flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver.

1. Place the vehicle on a lift or inspection ditch.

3. Disconnect the cable lug from the negative battery terminal.

5. Disconnect the hose of the large branch of the crankcase ventilation system from the union located on the engine camshaft housing.

6. Remove the crankcase ventilation hose check valve from the hole in the air filter cover.

7. Disconnect the non-return valve and the crankcase ventilation hose.

8. Squeeze the retaining pieces of the hose holder onto the oil separator.

9. Detach the holder from the retaining element.

10. Unscrew and remove from the threaded holes the two retaining bolts of the oil separator to the engine cylinder head.

11. Remove the oil separator pipe from the hole located in the timing chain cover.

Note. After dismantling drive belt auxiliary units check for oily surfaces, tooth wear, cracks, wrinkles, and other damage. If any defects are found, replace the belt with a new one.

With a certain skill, the air conditioner compressor can be removed without disconnecting the piping from it. In this case, secure the compressor with a rope or wire to the vehicle body.

13. Remove the refrigerant from the air conditioning system.

14. Press on the retaining elements of the block of a wire harness of the electromagnetic clutch for shutting down the A / C compressor. Then disconnect the block.

15. Unscrew and remove the fastening bolts of the high and low pressure to the air conditioner compressor housing, then disconnect the pipes.

Note. Immediately after the pipes are disconnected, plug the holes in them. This is to prevent dirt and moisture from entering the air conditioning system.

16. Loosen and remove the three mounting bolts from the mounting holes.

17. Remove the A / C compressor from the vehicle.

18. Loosen and remove from the threaded holes the three mounting bolts of the mounting bracket for the A / C compressor to the engine block.

19. Remove the A / C compressor mounting bracket from the vehicle.

Note. Consider the following when installing the air conditioner compressor:

- tighten the fastening bolts of the air conditioner compressor to the engine with a torque of 25–29 N ∙ m;

- install new sealing rings on the previously disconnected pipelines, and then apply compressor oil to them;

- connect the pipelines to the air conditioner compressor and tighten the fastening bolts of the flanges to a torque of 7-9 N ∙ m;

- fill the air conditioning system with refrigerant by contacting a specialized center for servicing car air conditioners.

20. Drain the oil from the engine lubrication system.

21. Unscrew and remove the two bolts securing the flywheel shield (hydraulic transformer disk; depends on the vehicle equipment).

22. Remove the flywheel shield from the vehicle.

23. Unscrew and remove the twenty bolts securing the oil sump.

24. Remove the oil pan from the vehicle by applying light blows with a rubber hammer around its perimeter.

Note. Remove old sealant from mating surfaces of the crankcase and engine block before installing the oil pan. Then apply the special sealant with a 2–3 millimeter roller. Remember that the sealant line must be from the inside of the mounting bolt holes. Five minutes after the sealant has been applied, connect the oil sump to the engine block, screw in the mounting bolts and tighten them to a torque of 13 Nm.

25. Unscrew and remove the pulley retaining bolt, holding the engine crankshaft from turning with a mounting spade in the manner shown in the accompanying photo.

26. Remove the pulley.

27. Drain the engine cooling system.

28. Loosen and remove the three coolant pump pulley retaining screws.

29. Remove the coolant pump pulley from the vehicle.

30. Post power unit using a lifting mechanism.

31. Unscrew and remove the fastening nut of the ground wire lug to the fastening stud of the right suspension support of the power unit.

32. Disconnect the ground wire from the hairpin.

33. Unscrew and remove the mounting pin (marked with the letter "B" in the attached photo) and two mounting bolts (marked with the letter "A" in the attached photo) of the right power unit suspension support bracket.

34. Unscrew and remove the fixing nut of the right power unit suspension support bracket.

35. Remove the bracket for the right suspension support of the power unit from the car.

Note. When installing the power unit right suspension support bracket, tighten the retaining stud and retaining bolts to 30 Nm, and then turn it 90 degrees.

36. Loosen and remove the three center timing chain cover mounting bolts.

37. Unscrew and remove the timing chain cover retaining bolt. Loosen and remove another sixteen mounting bolts in the same way.

38. Remove the timing chain cover and cover gasket.

Note. Consider the following when installing the timing chain cover.

Everything would be fine, the motor is like a motor, if it were not for the knock of the engine on a cold one. Too many CFNA motors start knocking before reaching even one hundred thousand kilometers, and in some cases the defect occurs already in the first 30 thousand.

Be careful when buying. A common problem is progressive knocking after a cold start.

Polo Sedan Engine - CFNA

In due time, the exit to Russian market model Polo sedan cost from 399 tr. (!) became a sensation and was considered an achievement of the Volkswagen concern. Still would! Many people dreamed about getting Volkswagen quality for that kind of money. But, as is often the case, low price badly affected the quality of the product - the Polo Sedan engineCFNA 1.6 L 105 HPwas not as reliable as expected.

CFNA 1.6 engine was installed not only on the Polo Sedan, but also on other models of the Volkswagen concern, including those assembled abroad. From 2010 to 2015, this motor was installed on the following models:

  • Volkswagen
    • Polo sedan
    • Jetta
    • Vento
    • Lavida
  • Skoda
    • Rapid
    • Fabia
    • Roomster

If you do not know which engine is installed on this particular car, then you can find out by its VIN-code.

CFNA motor problems

The main problem of the engineCFNA 1.6 is an knock on cold... At first, the knock of the pistons on the cylinder walls is manifested by a slight tinkling in the first minutes after a cold start. As it warms up, the piston expands, pressing against the cylinder walls, so the knock disappears until the next cold start.

At first, the owner may not attach any importance to this, but the knocking progresses and soon even an inattentive car owner realizes that something is wrong with the engine. The very appearance of a knock (the impact of the piston on the cylinder wall) indicates the beginning of the active phase of the destruction of the engine. With the arrival of summer, the knocking may recede, but with the first frosts, CFNA will knock again.

Gradually, the cold knock of the CFNA engine increases its duration, and once, it remains even after the engine has warmed up.

Engine knocking

The knock of the engine piston against the cylinder wall occurs when the pistons are shifted at top dead center. This becomes possible as a result of wear on the pistons and cylinder walls. The graphite coating of the skirts wears out quickly to the metal of the piston

Significant depletion occurs in places where the piston frictions against the cylinder wall.

Then the metal of the piston begins to beat against the cylinder wall and then seizures appear on the piston skirt

And on the cylinder wall

Despite a large number of complaints, the Volkswagen concern over the years of production CFNA engine(2010-2015) never announced a revocable company. Instead of replacing the entire unit, the manufacturer performs repair piston group , and even then only in the case of a claim under warranty.

The Volkswagen Group has not disclosed the results of its research, but scant explanations suggest that cause of defect supposedly consists unsuccessful piston design... In case of applying for a guarantee, service centres replace the standard EM pistons with modified ETs, which supposedly should completely solve the problem of knocking pistons in the cylinders.

But as practice shows, overhaul of the CFNA engine is not the final solution to the problem and half of the owners again complain about the appearance of engine knocking, after a few thousand km. mileage. The other half of those faced with the knock of this engine, after the overhaul, are trying to sell the car as soon as possible.

There is a version that chronic oil starvation caused by low oil pressure may be the real reason for the rapid wear of the CFNA engine. The oil pump does not provide sufficient pressure when the engine is running at rpm idle move, therefore, the motor is regularly in the oil starvation mode, which leads to its accelerated wear.

Resource

Declared by the manufacturer engine resource Polo Sedan is 200 thousand km, but traditionally 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engines manufactured by Volkswagen must walk at least 300-400 thousand km.

A defect such as the knock of pistons on a cold one makes these numbers irrelevant. The Volkswagen group does not disclose official statistics, but judging by the activity on the forums, 5 out of 10 CFNA engines begin to knock on runs from 30 to 100 thousand km. There are also known cases of manifestation of a defect on runs less than 10 thousand km.

However, it should be noted that there have been no cases of a jammed CFNA motor. This is probably due to the fact that the knocking progresses gradually and gives time to make a decision to repair the engine or sell the car.

Among the large number of complaints about knocking, there are isolated reports of the successful long-term operation of a motor that has a knock on a cold one, which allegedly does not progress and does not bother. Unfortunately, such messages are not confirmed by video recordings and, most likely, there is a knock here not of pistons, but of hydraulic lifters. According to the reviews of car owners, whose engine began to knock for real, it soon becomes impossible to ignore this knock. The ringing becomes such that “it’s embarrassing to stand next to the car” and “you can hear it from the balcony of the 7th floor”.

CFNA engine replacement

If the car is under warranty, then the manufacturer performs a free warranty repair, replacing the standard EM pistons with modified ET ones. The cylinder block and crankshaft can also be replaced, but these expensive parts are not always changed under warranty.

Engine CFNA equipped with timing chain drive and the chain tensioner does not have a backstop. There are no recesses on the pistons here either, so chain break / jump leads to "Armageddon" - the motor bends the valve... The steel chain is designed to provide a higher resource and reliability compared to a belt drive. In fact, the timing chain of this motor stretches rather quickly and requires replacement already by 100 thousand km of run.

The chain tensioner does not have a backstop and operates only by the oil pressure, which is pumped by the oil pump and occurs only after the engine is started. Thus, the chain tension occurs only when the engine is running, and while the engine is stopped, the stretched chain can move with the tensioner.

Due to this it is not recommended to park the car with the gear engaged, but without fixing with the parking brake. When starting the engine, the stretched chain may jump on the camshaft gears. In this case, it is possible for the valves to meet the piston, which leads to expensive engine repairs.

Over time, during operation, the standard CFNA exhaust manifold cracks and the car begins to growl deeply. It is advisable to replace the exhaust manifold free of charge, before the end of the warranty, otherwise it will either have to be replaced (for 47 thousand rubles) or welded (as in the photo), which will be cheaper.

It is enough to drive to the Volkswagen Polo at least once in order to understand that it is not for nothing that German-made cars have become the standard of quality and reliability. And the owners of these machines, especially those who have owned them for more than one year, know one more feature of them: incomparable maintainability. Almost any breakdown - whether it be a malfunction of the engine or any other system - can be repaired with little effort.

The only exception to this rule is, perhaps, only one breakdown: a broken timing belt. And it's not even the element itself - it's just not difficult to replace it. It's just that this malfunction, which almost always happens while the car is moving, entails very serious damage to the engine.

Timing replacement VW Polo: preliminary information

How does timing work?

The belt drive serves to synchronize the distribution and crankshaft... The first is responsible for the timely opening / closing of the valves, the second for the translational movements of the pistons in accordance with the four strokes of the engine. It happens as follows:

  1. Initially, all valves are closed. The pistons are in the extreme position.
  2. At the moment of injection of the air-fuel mixture, the intake valves open - this is the first stroke.
  3. After they are closed, the fuel, under the influence of the pressure of the pistons, begins to shrink until high pressure will not ignite. This is the second measure.
  4. The gases formed as a result of fuel combustion push the piston back. Actually, this is the useful work of the engine. This movement of the piston is converted by a number of mechanisms into rotational movement of the wheels.
  5. And at the last, fourth, stroke, exhaust gases are emitted through the timely opened exhaust valves.

The efficiency of the engine, that is, its power, depends on how smoothly this mechanism works. With its insignificant desynchronization, the motor power drops significantly. And with a large one, when all its elements begin to work in antiphase, they simply collide with each other, deform or even break. As a result, the entire mechanism has to be changed.

Timing Replacement Volkswagen Polo

This operation in terms of the amount of work and its cost is comparable to overhaul motor. To do this, the car service technicians will have to disassemble the Polo power unit literally by screws, install new pistons, valves, and sometimes cylinders. Moreover, both the camshaft and the crankshaft may need to be replaced. Not to mention the belt itself, because of which all this trouble happened. So the car will have to be left at the service station for several days.

However, the replacement of the VW Polo timing belt is not limited to the simple installation of new components instead of the failed ones. This mechanism requires careful tuning. In particular, the master will have to:

  • grinding the valve plates so that they adhere to the cylinders as tightly as possible and seal them tightly;
  • adjusting the size of the thermal gap of these elements so that the tightness of the combustion chambers is not violated when the engine heats up to its operating temperature;
  • lapping the pistons, which, on the one hand, must freely reciprocate inside the cylinders, but at the same time fit snugly against their walls so that the energy of fuel combustion is not wasted;
  • in the process of assembling a new timing belt, make its careful adjustment, thereby ensuring a clear synchronization of the operation of all its components.

It is clear that replacing the Polo timing belt requires a fairly large number of spare parts. Ideally, these should be branded parts. However, their cost is quite high, so you can use their counterparts. Russian production, the quality of which is also quite good. The main thing in this matter is to make sure that all the use of spare parts for repairs are legal production. Firstly, this will guarantee their quality, and secondly, in the event of a factory defect (from this, unfortunately, no one is completely insured), you could replace them under warranty.

Marginal notes: Lone craftsmen, taking up the replacement of the timing, as a rule, offer car owners to purchase themselves necessary spare parts... Thus, they disclaim responsibility for their quality and durability. In our car service, almost all the components necessary for repairing a Polo engine are always available, because we cooperate directly with their manufacturers. This, by the way, explains our low prices for them.

Replacing the timing belt Polo sedan

Is it possible to avoid such complex and expensive repairs as complete replacement Timing? Yes. And it is very easy to do it. You just need to monitor the serviceability of the belt and in a timely manner, after the expiration of the warranty period, change it to a new one.

The manufacturer recommends reinstalling this element every 40-45 thousand km. mileage of the car. However, this figure is very conditional - the belt can easily deplete its resource even earlier. Therefore, its inspection is carried out by a master in the process of each scheduled maintenance of the car.

This part is an elastic rubber and plastic ring with teeth on the inner surface that mesh with the control gears of the shafts. For greater strength, steel wire is laid between the layers of the belt, which, while increasing the reliability of this element, does not reduce its elasticity. If cracks, abrasions or damage to the edges are found on the belt, it is better not to risk it, but replace it with a new one without delay.

Fortunately, replacing the timing belt on the Polo sedan is a fairly simple operation for an experienced craftsman. On Polo engines, access to the element is simple - all you need to do is remove the cylinder block cover and the belt cover itself.

Another thing is that during the installation process new part, the technician will need to rebalance all other timing components and set the tension correctly. If you loosen it, it can slip through the gears. And excessive tension can lead to accelerated wear. For this, a special roller is provided, which is included in the standard set of parts required to replace the timing belt for the Volkswagen Polo sedan.

By entrusting the replacement of the VW Polo timing belt to specialists, you will not only save time, but you will also be sure that nothing threatens the engine of your car for thousands of kilometers.
