Increased ground clearance by 40 mm.
Special "off-road" plastic body kit that gives the car an attractive appearance, thanks to which it became more like a full-fledged SUV.
Enlarged bumpers.
Unique safety thresholds.
Chrome roof rails and panoramic roof.
Increased dimensions. The length of the SUV is 4380 mm, the width is 1784 (including the exterior mirrors - 2040 mm) and the height is 1460 mm.

It is easy to guess that the updated crossover has become more impressive and "brutal", and also acquired special distinctive features. All of these changes have given the car a more aggressive look. Looking at the V40 Cross Country, it seems that it is ready to storm the most difficult routes at any time.

Interior

The interior of the V40 Cross Country is made very solidly and from the highest quality materials. The salon has not undergone significant changes, with the exception of two innovations. A copper insert appeared on the center console and the stitching of the seat upholstery was changed. Apart from that, we can say that the interior is exactly the same as that of the standard V40.

Elements on both consoles are very conveniently grouped, so that nothing interferes with access to any element. Passenger Seats very comfortable as they have several adjustment modes, which will allow even people of impressive height to feel comfortable. They are soft so that even long trips will not become a pain. The back row seats are no less comfortable.

The back sofa will comfortably accommodate two passengers, but the three of them will already be cramped. The soundproofing of the car hides the rumble of the engine and the howling of air, and only a slight noise from the rolling of rubber in the area of \ u200b \ u200bthe arches reminds of the movement of a cross country.

Externally, the Volvo 40 cross country looks like a real off-road vehicle, capable of storming broken country roads and complete off-road, to a large extent, impressive bumpers and protective sills contribute to this. Through the efforts of designers, the opinion about the model as a car for retirees has changed, now it is hard not to notice it in the city traffic.

Double exhaust pipes, swift sidewalls, panoramic roof, spoiler and hood, chrome roof rails have updated the image of the car, now it looks youthful and daring.

The installed navigation devices are organically inscribed with the exterior of the car and are located very well. The radar is inscribed in the radiator grille, a camera that reads markings and road signs is installed in the upper part of the windshield, and the reversing camera is almost impossible to get dirty in any weather.

The developers paid special attention to security. Everything here is thought out to the smallest detail. In addition to ultra-reliable safety belts, the car is equipped with seven airbags in the passenger compartment and even one outside (for pedestrians).

In the cabin, a large number of beautiful details and a center console, as if floating in the air, immediately catch the eye. The materials used in the decoration are of very high quality and correspond to the class of the car.

Specifications

Considering the technical Volvo characteristics V40 Cross Country, it should be said that two different modifications will be supplied to Russia, which differ in the installed engine and the type of drive.

The front-wheel drive version is equipped with a five-cylinder gasoline engine T4, with a volume of 2 liters. The power unit was equipped with an automatic fuel injection system. Engine power is 180 "horses", which is achieved at 5 thousand rpm. The torque is 300 Nm (at a torque of 2700 rpm). One hundred kilometers on the speedometer can be seen in 8.7 seconds of acceleration. Average fuel consumption is 7.5 liters per 100 km. On the highway, it will be 5.8 liters, and when driving on city roads, just over 10 liters. Carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere are 174 g / km.

The AWD version will be delivered to Russia with a T5 engine. This is a five-cylinder turbine power unit which runs exclusively on gasoline. Its volume is also 2 liters, but at the same time its power is higher and amounts to 213 hp. It is reached at 6000 rpm. Torque is in line with the front wheel drive version. The T5 engine has the same fuel injection system as its counterpart. But, as you know, you have to pay for more power. The average fuel consumption of this version is slightly higher and amounts to 8.1 liters (11.3 liters on a city highway, and 6.3 liters on a suburban highway).

The range of these cars will be limited to these versions. In the future, it is planned to deliver to our country modified versions with a T5 engine, with an increased volume of up to 2.5 liters and a capacity of about 250 hp. Such a car can accelerate to hundreds in just 6.4 seconds. Naturally, such modifications increase fuel consumption. On the city highway it will be 11.6 liters, and on the suburban 6.4 liters.

All three basic versions will be equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The most powerful can be equipped with "mechanics" as an option.

The TF80-SD six-speed torque converter gearbox is very agile, making the right gear selection without hesitation. The box can work in both sports and manual modes. However, it will not be possible to perform engine braking with the gear engaged. The car is equipped with an adaptive cruise control system, allowing you to independently keep in the stream not only on the highway, but also in city traffic jams at low speeds. Electronics itself brakes and accelerates to a complete stop.

The torque distribution is performed by the Haldex GenV clutch, which distributes the torque between the axles proportionally based on the sensor signals. The assembly itself has become structurally lighter and a little more compact, the designers decided to install a clutch pack instead of solenoids with batteries. Stuffed with reliable electronics, the car moves very confidently even on a muddy road, but even small ruts and slopes can become an insurmountable obstacle. Low ground clearance and a very long front overhang for a crossover made these obstacles insurmountable.

Car suspension

The Volvo V40 Cross Country is equipped with a fully independent suspension. The front of the car is equipped with McPherson struts and an anti-roll bar. The wheels are equipped with ventilated disc brakes. To ensure good handling, the car is equipped with an extensive range of different electronic systems... Among all, it is worth highlighting the City Safety automatic braking system, the automatic parking system, and the vehicle detection system with a potentially dangerous location.

The suspension of the volvo v40 cross country is very tight, which provides good handling and slight roll. But it should be admitted that the overall energy consumption of the suspension for an off-road vehicle is still insufficient. The solution in terms of the settings of the front and rear suspension car, they are noticeably mismatched. The front suspension rigidly dampens vibrations when working out irregularities, and the rear does this after several damped vibrations. As it turned out, when tested on dirt roads, the travel of the cross country suspension itself is very small and insufficient in off-road conditions. The designers tried to fix some of the deficiencies of the suspension with the help of electronics. The crossover was equipped with the latest generation Haldex all-wheel drive system and electronics that provide insurance when descending the mountain.

Small ground clearance (173 mm) and long in front of the car when driving on gullies lead to instant hanging of one of the wheels. And here smart automation comes to the rescue, for which the transmission should be switched to sport mode and the engine speed should be added.

The triggered differential lock and the clutch that redistributed the torque will help the car continue to move. With full (diagonal) suspension of the suspension, the electronics in this case are less effective, but still does not allow the complete immobilization of the crossover.

Steering with electric power steering in straight-line movement is very elastic, moderately responsive provides an ideal connection with the road. But when cornering, the steering wheel is noticeably empty, and the connection with the steering wheels disappears in proportion to the speed.

Disadvantages of Volvo V40 Cross Country

The significant drawbacks of the car include the long front overhang, which does not allow to fully open off-road qualities this Volvo representative.

The small ground clearance will not allow to declare itself in the class of crossovers, at a ground clearance of 173 mm it is very difficult to feel confident outside the asphalt.

Despite the large number of adjustments, it will not be easy for a tall person to get behind the wheel, his head will rest against the headliner, this problem can only be solved by abandoning the panoramic roof.

No less criticism is caused by the rear doorway, getting to the rear seats is very problematic for people of solid build.

Advantages of the car

The owners of the cross country note the elaborate appearance and interior design, the precise operation of the transmission and excellent road performance, the design that meets modern requirements. High-quality interior trim pleases many owners of this car. The dashboard in the top versions is controlled like a smartphone, delighting the owners with its information content.

Price

The start of sales of the Volvo V40 Cross Country in our country is scheduled for March this year. As reported official dealers, the version with front-wheel drive and T4 engine in the basic configuration will cost 1,190,000 rubles. The all-wheel drive model will cost more and will cost customers 1,270 thousand rubles. The cost of the most powerful model is currently not disclosed.

conclusions

The Swedish automotive concern does not bring new models to the market as often as, for example, its Japanese counterparts. Perhaps for this reason, almost all cars of this brand receive the highest marks. Making a conclusion about the Volvo V40 Cross Country, it is worth highlighting its advantages:

A large number of different systems that provide excellent handling and comfort.
Everything related to safety is thought out to the smallest detail.
Refined appearance.
Convenient dashboard.
Low fuel consumption.

The only one negative point is the fact that the car does not cope very well with its direct duties of an SUV. It is hardly possible to go on it to conquer unexplored tracks, despite its very brutal appearance. However, as practice shows, in most cases, SUVs are not used for their intended purpose. If you are going to travel exclusively on city roads, then you should definitely buy the Volvo V40 Cross Country, because it does an excellent job of "urban SUV".

Everything around, except people, is becoming smarter and more functional. We are used to shifting our worries to technology, and engineers spend countless man-hours to make their devices and mechanisms more versatile and smarter. This trend is fully true in the world of cars: cars are overgrown with chips and gadgets, with the help of which the driver will soon have to turn only the radio volume knob in the cabin. New crossover Volvo V40 Cross Country is just one of those - it promises to deliver anywhere with complete relaxation and almost on autopilot.

To do this, you just need to order a car with a configuration close to the maximum. With a starting price of 1,189,000 rubles for a front-wheel drive 180-horsepower car, our test device costs almost twice as much: 2,179,999. Although I calculated that almost 300,000 options could be "painlessly" thrown out of this top-end car - so that the overall impression of her will hardly change. And the base V40 Cross Country with all-wheel drive and the same 213-horsepower engine as ours costs from 1,279,000 rubles. Not a bad proposition, but how will the V40 Cross Country be in business?

The Volvo V40 Cross Country attracts maximum attention on the road. From every second car, an interested glance, every two days, inquiries in the parking lot. And Volvo representatives say that the new product has caused quite a stir among customers, and a solid line has already lined up for it.

It is immediately striking that this car has a lot of original and beautiful parts, both outside and inside. The artists did their best to erase the retirement image of the brand from the minds of buyers. Double exhaust pipes, swift embossed sidewalls, a daring spoiler, an impudent hood, chrome roof rails. What is there to continue - look at the photos! The interior is also cool: the center console hovers in the air (although this solution is not new), the interior is illuminated from all sides, and the tidy is almost more interactive than the notorious iPad. Is it hard to find a neatly hidden CD-ROM drive slot? Here it is, at the junction of the gray and silver panels of the center console!

But there are also miscalculations, and they concern, first of all, the space in the cabin. The front seats are set high, and even with my height of 176 cm, the headroom with the seat down is minimal. If you are a little taller and do not like to sit on the floor, then get ready to meet the crown of the head with the eyeglass case and headliner located above the driver's door. Perhaps the problem can be partially solved by abandoning the luxurious panoramic roof for 33,000 rubles. Another miscalculation with the driver's seat is the massive step of the "podium", on which the front seat skids are installed. It is impossible to change the position by bending the left leg under it.

Layout problems continue to surface when familiarizing with the back row. The sofa itself is comfortable and equipped with a cool cup holder in the middle of the pillow, a comfortable armrest, and folding headrests. But in order to enjoy all this, you must first get there. This is where the difficulties begin: the rear door opening is narrow, and there is very little room for rear passengers. And when you get out of the car, beautiful silver door sills (an option for 14,900 rubles, by the way) will gladly stain your trousers.

Fully hand-drawn chameleon tidy is available as part of the City package for 75,200 rubles. A similar solution is gradually becoming fashionable: it can be found, for example, in the Jaguar XJ executive limousine and on some cars of other brands. The “painted hearth” greatly untied the hands of the Volvo creators: you can do almost everything with the instrument cluster as with your smartphone: first, let's change the subject, choosing from the three available. Both the color scheme of devices and their style, as well as their relative position and type of display will change. Want more contrast? Please turn the corresponding menu item. And yet there is no trivial window of the on-board computer: you can refuse it altogether or enter it into the existing instrument cluster with the display of certain data in a couple of clicks.

  • Where to put a mobile phone in a Volvo showroom? If not in the cup holder, then in the niche near the center console. But the latter, for the sake of design, is made floating, and the shelf is located behind it. Therefore, on the go, the phone cannot be reached. These are safety freaks Volvo - keep your hands on and use Bluetooth!
  • Hidden in the glove compartment are usb slots and a 12-volt outlet. But for some reason they forgot to make a slot for the wire - another reason not to use a mobile phone while driving?

We continue to customize the V40 CC for ourselves. Attention is drawn to the soft interior lighting, cleverly hidden everywhere. The lower and upper zones are adjusted separately - you can make it brighter or dimmer. And the mood-creating diode in the overhead console can be painted in any of the colors of the rainbow. After that, the fact that the memory of the electric seat drive has as many as three presets is no longer surprising. But the weighty remote control for music and climate is cool even after everything you've seen. True, you will have to pay a little extra for this beautiful option.

Like everything in this car, the remote control is "designer". The transmission selector knob also pulls on a local-scale work of art (and at the same time resembles the high-tech joystick of Toyota's Prius). And look at the rear-view mirror - it resembles an expensive thin-frame TV from the latest line of some fashion brand.

The T5 series engine here has five cylinders with a total volume of 2 liters, and the turbocharging provides a return of 213 "horses" and 300 Nm. It looks impressive, but our car also weighs a lot: 1509 kg, and this copy is also additionally packed with everything possible. Let's check if the power is enough for the crossover. For the eyes! It's hard to imagine why there is an option to choose the 249-horsepower 2.5-liter T5 with 350 Nm of thrust. Starting from a standstill is not impressive, but the catch on the move is more than convincing: this off-road vehicle shoots in a straight line no worse than hot hatches, and the passport 7.2 seconds to a hundred will not doubt it! The gearbox here is quite a nimble TF80-SD torque converter automatic from Aisin. It has six gears and is available in sport and manual modes. Both the one and the other are controlled only by the selector on the central tunnel - no steering column levers. It's just a bit of a pity that the V40 Cross Country refuses to brake with the engine at all.

Well, what about the corners? Not everything is going smoothly here. In vain, the engineers did not consider it necessary to bring the electric booster (for a surcharge, it can have three settings of the feedback effort) to the ideal: the steering wheel itself is quite elastic, responsive and rather "short", but in turns the steering wheel is very empty, and the driver's connection with the steered wheels is lost. And it seems that the car is not the one to grumble about this topic, but against the background of excellent acceleration and braking dynamics, this miscalculation is still frustrating. And the suspension here is dense enough to provide good and understandable handling and very slight rolls.

Although the chassis also fails in some ways: from an off-road vehicle you expect a definitely greater overall energy consumption of the suspension! In addition to this, the front and rear suspension settings are slightly mismatched: to understand this, you need to slip through a couple of speed bumps. The front wheels, within reason, rigidly take the load, working out the unevenness. But when it comes to the rear, the body jumps out with an unexpected uppercut, followed by a few damped vibrations. The tailgate is very tightly tuned! Therefore, in front of the "sunbeds" behind the wheel of the all-terrain V40 Cross Country, you will brake in the same way as lovers of lowered cars.

But is everything so sad with bad roads? Off-road driving in the Volvo V40 CC is, at first glance, almost an oxymoron. Well, what could be geometry with 145 mm ground clearance and a long front overhang? And the suspension travel, as it turned out at the very beginning of the tests outside the asphalt, is minimal. But not everything is so simple: firstly, the V40 CC is equipped with the latest, fifth generation Haldex all-wheel drive system, and secondly, the car boasts excellent rear end geometry and even the presence of electronics that insure when descending a mountain. Let's see how it all works!

In the process of crawling, even on light slides, one of the rear wheels hangs out immediately. Get down to business, Haldex 5! But the car stands still and turns the wheel in the air. In order to go further, you need to turn on the sports mode of the stabilization system (albeit not with one touch - for this you have to dig into the on-board system) and turn up the speed - the electronic imitation of the differential lock will work instantly, and the clutch will instantly distribute the torque, after which the V40 confidently enough gets out of the ambush. Full diagonal hanging is a little more hassle, but also doesn't immobilize the car completely.

Based on the results of a walk on snow-covered gullies, the verdict became clear quickly enough: even a decently muddy road is unlikely to become a serious obstacle for the V40 CC technologically advanced drive, but you should not meddle in ruts, slopes and other obstacles that require good geometry: a modest ground clearance and front bumper, behind which an eye and an eye, will very quickly cool your ardor. At the same time, the very modest suspension travels are fully compensated by the skills of a well-tuned all-wheel drive of the latest generation. The Haldex GenV clutch, like its predecessor, distributes torque proactively based on signals from the sensor ground. The design differences boil down to the fact that the unit has become lighter and more compact due to the use of a special valve in the drive of the clutch pack instead of a solenoid with a separate accumulator.

By paying for Volvo's auxiliary electronics, the driver gets a cool and useful upgrade to his V40 Cross Country. While we have not yet created a full-fledged autopilot, we can enjoy adaptive cruise controls, circular radars and other car parkers, which also make life much easier. The radar in the radiator grille (note the solid plastic area) is responsible for feeling the road in front of the car, and the camera at the top windshield keeps track of markings and signs. All this fraternity of "electronics" carefully watches the environment while driving, but if you prefer not to receive unnecessary advice, then all of them can be deactivated, since there are enough settings.

The camera recognizes road signs well, but you should not rely entirely on its work. In the city, she thinks that we are in Europe, and from somewhere she takes the limit of 50, she misses some signs. But to be honest, it is a sin to scold electronics when you yourself do not always understand how fast it is allowed to drive on our roads. But with the Moscow markings, even sprinkled with snow and mud, the artificial eye copes well. The lane tracking system works adequately and at the same time unobtrusively: vibrations on the steering wheel are not annoying, although sometimes they are confused with irregularities under the wheels.

Another interesting toy is the adaptive cruise control system. Its functionality allows you not only to hold on to the car in front on the track, but also to push in traffic jams at ultra-low speeds. The car itself brakes and accelerates, unless a complete stop has occurred - then you have to get under way with a light touch of the gas pedal or by pressing a button on the steering wheel, after which the V40 Cross Country will independently adjust the speed taking into account the distance to the car in front. The radar works better than you expect, and is quite applicable in the conditions of the metropolitan hustle and bustle. There is only one but: the stock that Volvo leaves in front allows especially impudent drivers "like Moscow" to get in front of you. There is also a system of full automatic braking, but it is better to test it in "laboratory" conditions, which we will definitely do in the near future.

The Volvo V40 hatchback in Russia is sold only in the "off-road" modification of the Cross Country - with a 12 mm higher ground clearance, larger wheels, other bumpers and roof rails. Prices start at 1 million 189 thousand rubles for a front-wheel drive version of the T4 with a two-liter turbo engine (180 hp), a six-speed automatic transmission, seven airbags, climate control, a CD-receiver and a City Safety system. For "fitting" we took a hatchback in the T5 modification with a forced up to 213 hp. engine and four-wheel drive. In the basic configuration, such a five-door costs 1 million 279 thousand rubles, but here - full set options: leather interior, electric front seats, glass roof, navigator, rear-view camera, bi-xenon headlights and much more, which made the car almost twice more expensive - 2 million 219 thousand rubles.

The Volvo V40 is the most stylish of all Volvo models. A cross between a station wagon and a hatchback, it has a dynamic silhouette that is not typical of the Swedish brand. Sophisticated but harmonious body plastic gives the car a sportiness and light aggression. Especially the V40 is good at the back - gracefully curved taillights with LEDs and a large spoiler above the tailgate give it a special charm, and a black insert under rear window continues the tradition of the shocking C30. From eternal family values - forward to youth dynamism! And the dynamics of this hatchback does not occupy. Acceleration is powerful and smooth, with diesel pressure, the steering wheel is "short" and precise, and all the other mechanisms in this car work perfectly. Except that the suspension is harsh, and the low-profile tires do not tolerate the pits and cracks of our roads poorly.

The interior is the realm of Scandinavian design. Simplicity of forms and reverent attitude to the material are brought to perfection. The traditional "floating" console of the instrument panel with four "twists" and a "little man" of the air conditioner is strewn with a whole keyboard of buttons. Playing this "piano" on the go is not only inconvenient, but also dangerous. The abundance of different settings and the multi-stage actions required, in my opinion, are in conflict with the vaunted safety of Volvo cars. Sure, a pedestrian airbag and anti-collision automatic braking are great, but the front and rear are wide. rear pillars significantly limit the view, the video camera quickly becomes covered with dirt, and the marking tracking system loses its meaning together with its disappearance. Of all the devices, the most useful in Russian conditions would be, perhaps, the BLIS system and pedestrian recognition in the dark.

Progress is unstoppable and the Volvo V40 is at the top. It remains to be regretted that our country is still at the bottom.

Leonid Golovanov

Volvo. I'm rolling. Not a sausage along Malaya Spasskaya, but a man. Which sounds proudly. Especially - in such silence, broken only by the quiet "odd" five-cylinder hum of the Volvo turbo engine.

It would seem that a golf-class "hatch" based on the previous Focus for more than two million rubles is a madman's delirium, Alice in Wonderland, a robbery in the middle of a northern day. But I'm not offended. Moreover, I am pleased. Behind the wheel of a Volvo V40 XC (you will allow me to abbreviate the branded Cross Country here too) you feel that this is premium. And finally, the point is not at all in the numerous safety systems: take away all those radars and cameras, the "forty" Volvo will remain more than a worthy competitor to the cars of the "big German three". After all, the "one" BMW is much simpler, there is too much golf in the Audi A3, and there is even more of it in the Mercedes A-class. And then ... Focus? What are you talking about - this is a slightly stripped-down Volvo S60. Taste. Dignity. The steering wheel tightly covered with leather is light, but informative: in moderation - feelings of the road, in moderation - isolation from the outside world. In a straight line, the car goes as if by itself, in bends - complete obedience to the driver and an even perfected temper. Powerful acceleration - lagged but gentlemanly. "Automatic" is smooth, the suspension is compressed and energy-intensive. Normal clearance. Four-wheel drive. And radar cruise control that can guide you even in the city.

I also don’t understand why Steve Mattin was fired. He is now in a Lada, but the V40 is his last brainchild as Volvo's chief designer, and I remember how excited he was when he came to the stand of his former employers at the Paris Motor Show, where the new 40 was shown for the first time. He has nothing to be ashamed of - well done, Steve.

And I, perhaps, would have driven such a car, if it were a little more sporty. And cheaper.

Ilya Khlebushkin

I don’t understand why this Volvo suddenly became a Cross Country? Neither for country, nor even more so for cross-country, it is not good. And let the gigantic wheels and unpainted lining on the sills and bumpers try to pass it off as a crossover, but the ordinary light ground clearance will not be misled.

Baptize it Gran Turismo? Past again: the trunk for long-distance travel is modest, and under the hefty hatch of the underground there is only a crutch.

Maybe a Family-Room? The atmosphere inside is cozy, albeit in the spirit of Scandinavian techno-minimalism, the materials are the envy of many, and the emphasized worship of safety is about the same. It remains to "clean up" on the "floating" console - to put in place the proprietary heap of the blind keyboard and replace the gear lever with a luminous selector circuit, which looks like a cheap craft from a Chinese trinket store.

No, Family-Room won't do either. The back row is cramped, the roof presses on the crown, my feet get stuck in a trap under the front seats - and even my fourteen-year-old son kissed the low doorway.

I think I've found it: Town Streets! Feeling like the fastest fish in a dense city school is hindered only by an unimportant view back and a frightening collision warning system with red flashes and a siren. Although it can either be turned off, or set up in a less panicky mood.

Under the wheels there is a snow porridge, but on the dense and plump steering wheel, like a BMW, there is a transparency of the summer sky. Heavy, like a frame SUV, treading on "little things" with increasing speed turns into a flying gait, the gearbox does not harm, and the five-cylinder turbo engine on the golf-class hatchback simply must be a provocateur.

With such talents, even the price of a million dollars is not deterred. But I would still change my name so that everything is fair.

Konstantin Sorokin

This is not cross or country! And in general, from whatever side I looked at the new Volvo V40 in a pseudo off-road guise, I did not see the whole image. Design, excuse me, too. The Volvo C30 has it. The XC family also clings to individuality. And here - a faceless collective image on the theme of the current golf-class hatchbacks.

It's good at least that from the inside the car is perceived as an ethnic "Scandinavian": aesthetically polished, flaunting impeccable materials and stuffed with the latest generation of electronic assistants. Instead of cameras, microwave sensors monitor the situation in the dead zones - this is also an indicator of the technical level. But why am I sitting so low? Why, driving into the parking lot, scraping the ice with a plastic body kit? Because there is no trace left of the real Cross Country. So enjoy the dynamic "shooting" of the 250-horsepower turbo engine, enjoy the road handling and in no case drive off the asphalt.

Sergei Znaemsky

Iron mark, the symbol of iron, the mark of Mars, the order of courage ... Is it still on the nose of a Volvo? Isn't it time to change it to a stylized Venus mirror? Who is the loveliest, most premium and fashionable in the world? The V40 Cross Country, of course!

Crossover is not a gender or a vocation, it is a trend, a style. This is look. Big boots with high soles for a tight-fitting suit, an advanced instrument device, a bauble for an illuminated transmission selector - that's the hero of our time ready. More precisely, the heroine.

Step outside. And there...

Oh my god, I'm in danger in the blind spot! The distance is shrinking! Speed exceeded! We are losing our streak ... How scary to live!

Judging by the number of panic attacks by on-board electronics, by the diligence with which the car “blows on the water”, defending itself “from the fool,” and by the importance that the Swedes attach to the promotion of such systems, drivers of the most basic level of training behind the wheel are not just not excluded, but and are especially welcome. Here it is, a new breed of Volvo driver: even if the cook is capable of running the state, then who cannot cope with a small Volvo?

If you are just such a “desperate housewife” who was tempted by the cautious small crossover V40 Cross Country in the T5 version, I hasten to please you - you have a chance in court, or even pre-trial, to return each of the 2 million 219 thousand rubles spent on it. Because you were deliberately misled: promoting the V40 in Russia as a SUV is much more promising than as a "hot hatch", which it is by birth.

If you turn off all electronic insurers and find a patch from which winter has not yet had time to retreat ... What the hell is a mirror! Flame motor, light-footed "automatic", muscular chassis and filigree handling - here it is, men's Volvo-driving!

It's great that the Swedes have finally managed to catch up with BMW and Audi in driving temperament, that there has been a rejection of excessive glamor in appearance, that a new chief interior designer has been invited from Bentley, who will surely put things in order in the Swedish family of knobs and buttons in front of the driver. Maybe then marketers will find the courage to spit on fashion and declare that Volvo is still a masculine brand. Or not? We have already forgotten how to recognize this by the emblem.

Here's a station wagon for you, buyers. Large, with a roomy interior, a powerful engine - and even four-wheel drive. Do you take?

No, we don't need a shed!

And if we slightly "lift" it, put it in black plastic and call it an SUV?

Here is a dialogue explaining why the "usual" station wagons Subaru Legacy and Volvo V70 have already left the Russian market, leaving the Outback and XC70 instead. The Audi A6 Avant is still holding on, but last year about thirty such station wagons were sold - Allroad is ten times more popular! Is it any wonder that Volvo decided not to bring the "regular" V40 hatchback to our market at all, having relied on its "crossover" version?

But it's one thing - a large station wagon grafted from light off-road (at least it goes with an unpainted plastic body kit), but a golf-class hatchback with silver-plated inserts disguised as power protection will be ridiculous except for Oka with a "kangaroo". And this is a shame, because I liked the Volvo V40 itself.

Is the love of Russians for ostentatious "off-road" so great that you can sacrifice beauty? In my opinion, “just” the Volvo V40 is one of the most beautiful cars of our day. But, alas, we cannot see the true purity of his lines.

An amazingly interesting salon! And in front of the driver is a real control panel! You sit down - and for a while you forget about everything in the world. In the middle there is a panel with a wonderful graphic typewriter, a huge transparent sunroof, an unusual luminous knob on the gear lever ... But when it becomes necessary to use all this beauty, you freeze again, but already from confusion. Small buttons are scattered across the center console, and you won't be able to use them on the go without skill. To simply turn on the sound of the audio system, you need to click not on the wheel, but only on one part of it. I'm used to the fact that when you press the seat heating button, the indication appears on the button itself. And here it was a sting, a sting, but nothing caught fire. I thought it wasn’t working. Later I realized that I had to look at the display. She noted the almost complete absence of a backward view - and remembered that she faced a similar problem while driving the equally spectacular C30, which, by the way, has many similarities with the V40: from the interior design to the stunningly beautiful rear end of the body.

The car is going very well. Reception, reliable, intelligible. This car is like a cozy blanket on wheels, which is pleasant to wrap up in every time. And yet I miss the spark, the spark, the little imp that should live in my car. Doesn't turn on.

In the Russian representative office of Volvo, in contrast to, say, Auto Review, the issue of the premium status of the brand was resolved long ago - and, of course, positively. That is why the advertising slogan for the V40 Cross Country hatchback for the ruthlessness of creativity can only compete with the "delights" from BMW - "Innovative"! And the union of two stickers on the doors of a hatchback parked near my house gave birth to an even stranger combination - "Innovative Butts".

Stop, this is true! Fifteen years ago, the Obukhov company, at that time an ordinary service for the repair of Swedish cars, offered "reverse tuning" - an increase in ground clearance on passenger models, the installation of power underbody protection ... Then the Swedes were skeptical about these experiments, although the Obukhovites actually anticipated the appearance cars with Cross attachments, Scout and Alltrack! The roads are a lot better now than they were then, but hey, the demand for the elevated versions is only growing.

If you also need one for your day-to-day curb warfare, the V40 Cross Country is not a bad option at all. Of course, provided that you are leading these fights alone or at most together. Because the trunk here is not Volvian modest, but rear seats… What are the back seats?

But there is something cool ahead: excellent finish, beautiful, multifaceted dashboard. And the V40 rides in a way that none of the cars modified in the Obukhov Autocenter dreamed of. Are advertising slogans really that powerful? With its behavior, the V40 Cross Country really reminds me of a BMW! Dense suspension, informative steering wheel, quick and precise reactions. I've never felt so good driving a Volvo.

"The most innovative" gives rise to delight! Here it stuck ...

Ivan Shadrichev

There are Volvo and more beautiful, but in general this style is rather pleasant to me. The car is plump, and the hood would fit for a larger one; however, for the rear passengers it is cramped, both in the knees and feet, and in height - I’m not God knows what a giant, but I can barely fit “behind myself”.

I’m not bad at the wheel. Perhaps, for one little thing: the tachometer on the fashionable "virtual" dashboard came out blind for me, and I could not understand the meaning of the indications of the arrow located symmetrically to it on the other side of the speedometer on the move. I suspect that she talks about fuel economy, and if so, then I do not regret at all that I was forced to ignore her movements. For I trampled the right pedal heartily - and, I must admit, I gave myself pleasure. It is very pleasant, especially when the permissible overtaking zone is only two hundred meters, and you easily fit into this framework. And the quiet roar of the motor is pleasant to the ear. However, I cannot call a completely comfortable ride: if the vibrations of the car are smoothed out on a good ride, then it is worth moderating the pressure - and the suspension will begin to allow both yaw and detailed repetition of pits and protrusions. And she is talkative in potholes.

What I liked unconditionally was the cornering behavior. For the time being, the stabilization system does not interfere with the control process at all, allowing it to slide in small angles. She wakes up exactly when I myself was about to correct drifts and drifts.

The rest of the electronic assistants were mostly upset. Take road sign reading, for example. With regard to our homeland - catch after catch. Here I crawled a speed bump, in front of whom there is a sign with the number 20, but there is no cancellation! And here I go with the wrong hint, until another restriction is met.

Warnings about dangerous encounters in the capital are also a hassle. These advisers work tirelessly, which is why you yourself panic from the imminent and inevitable collapse. I would like to immediately leave the car - and headlong into the subway, so as not to go out on highways in my life.

If I dare to drive, as if the car is easier.

Nikita Gudkov

In the competition for the most meaningless option on Russian market the road sign recognition system will win by a huge margin. Although in Volvo V40 these signs are displayed very conveniently - in color, on the field of the liquid crystal "speedometer". A mark appears on the interactive scale, and if you exceed the speed, the sign will flash for a couple of seconds.

Only in four out of five cases, the actually allowed speed was completely different! The main flaw is that the camera does not recognize the signs of the beginning and end of settlements, which in our country mainly determine speed mode... The system does not "recognize" the intersection, to which most often, according to our Rules, speed limit signs operate.

In second place in the rating of uselessness is the lane keeping assist system. Why help and not retention? Because at Volvo, it does not steer, but only hints at the intersection of the markings with a weak vibration of the steering wheel. When we drove the V40 Cross Country “to take a detour to St. Petersburg” (AP # 7, 2013), the vibration was almost constant - on our winter roads we had to drive over the markings all the time, avoiding holes, ice and snow.

Active cruise control ... Okay, perhaps I will not put it in third place - I will leave the "bronze" for the seven-color interior lighting. And cruise control, by the way, works here from zero speed, that is, it can drive a car in a traffic jam. There are delays in acceleration and deceleration, but not catastrophic. And if you are not embarrassed that the distance to a crawling car in front is always such that someone can climb (again, Russian specifics!), Then an active "cruise" will really allow you to relax while driving.

Let electronics be our future. Volvo assures that it is possible to fulfill the ambitious plan so that by 2020 people do not die in cars of this brand, it is possible only through electronic means. In the more traditional "automobile" areas, almost all reserves have been selected, perfection is almost achieved.

But it turns out that a car for 1.3 million rubles (in the basic configuration of the V40 Cross Country I only lack seat heating) costs almost twice as much. Only one painting "metallic" at Volvo costs 40 thousand rubles, and "helpers" are even more expensive. Well, all of them!

As always, journalists are offered cars in rich trim levels. The black Volvo V40 Cross Country with striking aluminum sills and overhangs at the front and rear is no exception. True, before the top version with a 249-horsepower engine, the two-liter unit of 213 hp I inherited. a little undersized. But the rest was not inferior. In some ways, this is for the better - it is not so gluttonous, taxes are less, and power, and even in conditions of predominantly city driving, is enough for the eyes. After all, whatever one may say, the machine is not the biggest, the same Ford Focus.

I note that the comparison with the Focus is quite appropriate, since the model was being developed at a time when Volvo was part of the friendly family of the Detroit auto giant, and therefore, along with the impeccable Scandinavian design in the Volvo V40 Cross Country, no, no, yes, and healthy American high-tech pragmatism will flash ... However, where the company from Gothenburg has always remained true to itself, it is in an effort to make the car as safe as possible. Unsurprisingly, the Volvo V40, which debuted last year in Geneva, has become the world's first car with a pedestrian airbag even without an SUV body kit and without the Cross Country in its name. When I spoke with Stefan Inerfeld, the project manager of the V40, I was very upset by the news that such a humane machine would not be sold here.

As the company explained to me, the V40 did not reach Russia due to the expected low demand for compact station wagons, but its more brutal version, with increased ground clearance and all-wheel drive, finally arrived. And I am very pleased that the pedestrian airbag has not been thrown out of the package of options. It is available in Russia and will cost 39 thousand rubles. To what extent philanthropy has not yet extinguished in us, the statistics of sales that are just beginning will show.

But it's time to drive. With all the compactness of the car, the driver, and even very tall, will have enough space in the Volvo V40 Cross Country (however, it should be noted that the seat cushions are short), but those sitting in the back will have to squeeze. This applies to legroom and especially to the head. The three passengers in winter clothes in the back seat were sad to look at. The guys joked optimistically, they say, in cramped quarters, but not in offense, besides, hugging each other - it was warmer. They did not know that the rear seats have triple heating.

That's what a car from Scandinavia means! Increased attention is paid to heating issues. The car has and preheating, a web of invisible threads of electric heating tightened the entire windshield, side mirrors and glass were not ignored back door... You can start warming up the engine and interior remotely from an iPhone; there is a corresponding free program in the App-applications, you just have to type the word Volvo. You can also control the location of the car and the status of a number of its parameters via a smartphone. But the "smart" car did not submit to completely fashionable gadgets, for example, if the level of gasoline in the tank is insufficient, the V40 Cross Country will not allow it to be burned all out just for the sake of heat.

In a warm car, you can and even need to ride without outerwear. A coat or jacket limits the driver's mobility, but also increases the risk of injury in a speed crash. The Swedes fighting for the safety of the car have proved it. It turns out that the few centimeters that separate the body from the seat belt are enough in a collision to cause serious injury. I remembered this when I saw the speedometer needle that had passed over a hundred. I confess, I did not expect from the Volvo V40 Cross Country such a high-spirited, one-breath acceleration, given the slush and snow under the wheels. That's when all-wheel drive is needed!

As I already said, not all Volvo V40 Cross Country supplied to Russia are equipped with it. Cars with 180 hp four-cylinder engines do not have it. But five-cylinder units 213 and 249 forces - please. The drive is permanent and non-disconnectable. It is not possible to force only one axis to work. There are no crawler gears and handouts. Before the “hundred”, my “black arrow” fired in 7.2 seconds, losing to the older “sister” by some 0.5 seconds. "Hundred" obeys 180-strong version at around 8.7 s, which is also impressive. And no talk about Volvo cars and their drivers here!

From the first kilometers traveled, you feel the care of the driver. It is especially evident in dense city traffic. Side blind spot indicators in the A-pillars will prevent inaccurate lane changes. By the way, these electronic devices, which are used to flaunt the cars of prestigious brands, first appeared on Volvo 7 years ago on the C30 model. Adaptive cruise control keeps the distance, up to a stop, from the vehicle in front. And the shaking of the steering wheel will remind you of the involuntary crossing of the marking lines. When maneuvers back driving Volvo The V40 Cross Country includes a rear camera that can be pointed straight ahead or under the bumper for tighter parking. Moreover, when driving in reverse, the driver does not need to be afraid of vehicles crossing the path. In case of danger, the car will not only warn the driver, but also stop the car. In my opinion, the concern for the driver would be even more gentle if the large display in the center of the dashboard had a tactile screen. And so you have to turn the knob endlessly in search of the desired letter ... The presence of a tactile screen would also simplify the search for the necessary functions hidden under the icons of the buttons scattered on the console and practically unreadable from the driver's seat.

But Volvo V40 Cross Country is able to park itself, "finding" enough space for this in a row of cars parked on the sidewalk. Definitely, this Volvo model has come closer than other production cars to the threshold beyond which human intervention in the operation of equipment is not required. This machine is capable of recognizing road signs. During the test, more than once I caught myself thinking that the car would follow the traffic rules more rigorously than myself. In some places, he reinsured himself by putting a speed limit of 20 km / h on the speedometer. And for all that, the Volvo V40 Cross Country is a driver's car, it goes fast, obediently, confidently. The stiff suspension does not add comfort to passengers, but makes it comfortable to control, including during high-speed maneuvering. In harmony with acceleration dynamics and braking dynamics. The brakes have good feedback. I will say the same about steering.

But what I didn’t like was the noisy studded tires (I don’t exclude that insufficient sound insulation may be partly to blame for the sounds penetrating into the cabin) and a very limited view back through the salon mirror. The entire space is covered by three large head restraints that guard the passive safety. The electronics compensate for the limited visibility. It compensates successfully, but we are not yet accustomed to believing it so unconditionally. I see no reason to consider the Volvo V40 Cross Country a crossover. Does not convince me of this embossed in the lining under rear bumper Cross Country lettering. Well, what kind of crossover is it with a ground clearance of 14 cm, albeit equipped with an assistant when descending from the mountain? Yes, a good balanced road car with a driving accent. Expensive, compact, safe.

On October 25 this year, four weeks after the world premiere at the Paris Motor Show, a Russian presentation took place as part of the opening of Moscow Fashion Week. car Volvo V40 Cross Country. In Gostiny Dvor those modifications of the new model were presented (and prices for them were announced), which from February next year can be purchased in dealerships by Volvo Cars.

Conceiving a car off-road market segment "C", the Swedish designers did not fool themselves with complex technical solutions. Taking the Volvo V40 hatchback as a basis, the engineers simply increased its ground clearance and added rear wheel drive using the familiar Haldex clutch. The Volvo V70 Cross Country station wagon, introduced in 1997, was created in exactly the same way. A simplified one is also provided, i.e. front-wheel drive, modification of the car Volvo V40 Cross Country.

Other features of the V40 Cross Country include Hill Descent Control, which controls the speed when descending, as well as the Hill Hold function, which makes it easier to start the hill. The first of these technologies is offered only for the Cross County all-wheel drive version.

The rest of the differences between the off-road vehicle and its usual counterpart, such as bumpers and body sills or vertically installed daytime running lights, are, in my opinion, more decorative than functional.

Some difficulties arise with the determination of the ground clearance of the novelty. One of the independent sources calls the value 173 mm. The manufacturer only reports that the clearance of the V40 Cross Country is 40 mm higher than that of road car... But in this case, it becomes unclear how the height of these cars can differ only by 13 mm, that is, be equal to 1458 and 1445 mm, respectively. The width and length for both models are the same - 4370 and 1802 mm. However, there are other inaccuracies in the factory specification, so I recommend you be careful.

While Volvo Cars' engineers did not complicate the task for themselves, the marketing specialists took care not to overshadow life with the difficulties of choice for Russian buyers. In our market, there are only two modifications of the Volvo V40 Cross Country - front-wheel drive, with a T4 gasoline engine, and a version with all-wheel drive and a T5 gasoline engine, albeit in three trim levels - Kinetic, Momentum and Summum. What is hidden behind these names is not yet clear. It is only known that the price of the front-wheel drive version starts from 1,189,000 rubles, and the T5 AWD modification starts from 1,279,000 rubles.

1984cc T4 4-cylinder gasoline engine Direct injection and turbocharging develops 132 kW (180 hp) at 5000 rpm and 300 Nm of torque over a wide range from 2700 to 5000 rpm.

The listed characteristics of the motor in combination with a 6-speed automatic transmission Geartronic transmissions allow the car with a curb weight of 1,452 kg to reach a speed of 100 km / h in 8.7 seconds. The quantity maximum speed Volvo does not name it in accordance with corporate rules.

The Volvo V40 Cross Country T4 version is very economical. It consumes 10.4 liters of fuel per 100 km - in the city, 5.8 liters - on the highway and 7.5 liters - in the combined cycle. The CO2 emissions are 174 g / km.

But the modification of the Volvo V40 Cross Country T5 AWD is much faster. Up to 100 km per hour a car equipped with a 5-cylinder petrol engine with a volume of 2497 cc. cm, with direct fuel injection and turbocharging, as well as a Geartronic automatic transmission and four-wheel drive, it manages to accelerate in 6.4 seconds.

Of course, the powerful engine, all-wheel drive transmission and 60 kg more weight of the car lead to an increased appetite. 11.6 liters (in the city), 6.4 liters (on the highway) and 8.3 liters (in the combined cycle) - these are the fuel consumption values of the T5 AWD modification.

In addition to what I said earlier, the Cross Country differs from the road version of the Volvo V40 by the original mesh radiator grill, anodized black frames that frame all the windows of the car, black exterior mirror housings and roof rails. In addition, the car will be available with a panoramic glass roof and heated windshield.

Especially for the Volvo V40 Cross Country model, the designers of the Scandinavian company have developed GEMINUS (16-inch), LARENTA (17-inch), MEFITIS (18-inch) aluminum alloy wheels. All of them are offered in two color options - silver and gray. Black discs are available as an accessory.

New exterior colors are also available for the off-road vehicle: Raw Cooper metallic, Biarritz Blue metallic, Amazon Blue metallic, Misty Blue metallic, Nightshade Gray metallic. And for the seat upholstery, you can choose from seven leather options, among which Volvo marketers highlight the brown Espresso Brown. However, there is also a two-tone interior trim.

Otherwise, the V40 Cross Country is no different from the road version of the Volvo V40.

The V40 Cross Country, in particular, uses Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSCT), which includes a number of technologies that improve both driving safety and driving quality. First, with the help of the body roll angle sensor, the system detects the tendency to skid of the car at the moment of its first signs. Thanks to this, the position of the machine is corrected more precisely. Secondly, the cornering traction control function (Corner Traction Control) provides the Volvo V40 Cross Country with fast and confident cornering.

Of course, the Volvo V40 Cross Country has been designed with the IntelliSafe philosophy and is therefore packed with the latest in safety and driver support. The list of new technologies includes, for example, a driver's knee airbag and a pedestrian airbag, as well as parking assist plus traffic sign recognition. In addition, the Volvo V40 Cross Country is equipped with advanced pedestrian detection technology with full automatic braking and the updated City Safety system, which is now able to prevent collisions at speeds up to 50 km / h. These innovations make the Volvo V40 the most intelligent safety model in the history of the Swedish company.

It should be recalled that the designers have replaced the traditional instrument panel on the Volvo V40 with a liquid crystal display. Now the driver, in accordance with his preferences, can choose one of three options for displaying information. Such a dashboard is also convenient in that only the information necessary in a given situation is displayed on the screen. The experts behind the new Volvo Sensus information system were also striving to achieve this maximum simplicity. In the named system, all information is displayed on a color monitor located in the upper part of the instrument panel. All Volvo Sensus functions can be operated using either the buttons on the steering wheel or directly under the monitor. In addition, there is also a remote control. And the mobile application allows the driver to keep in touch with his car remotely.

As with the road-going version of the Volvo V40, the V40 Cross Country's designers have not forgotten about the mundane, but equally important task of stowing cargo comfortably in the trunk. Numerous hooks, a box for storing small items, an additional floor, one of two options for a hanging net (soft or steel), as well as a "Luggage Compartment Optimization System", which includes two floor rails, a partition for separating luggage and a strap for securing it.

As you can see, the differences between the regular and all-terrain versions of the Volvo V40 are minimal. Therefore, Volvo Cars' decision to supply only the V40 Cross Country model to Russia is not at all surprising. Taking into account specific road conditions it makes no sense to offer us a front-wheel drive car with limited ground clearance when there is a version with increased ground clearance and an all-wheel drive transmission.

By and large, the Volvo V40 Cross Country is not even a crossover, let alone an SUV. So what is it? It seems to me that due to its compact size, high engine power and improved cross-country ability, the V40 Cross Country is well suited for year-round operation in a metropolis, taking into account regular trips outside of it. It's just a shame that the diesel version will have to wait. However, in any case, I would call this model a little differently - Volvo V40 Cross City.
