"What it is?" - both drivers, passengers and pedestrians are surprised when they come across a huge unusual jeep on the road. And almost everyone turns after the mechanical giant. Many try to catch up with him by car or come closer in the parking lot. And all in order to understand - how is this car made? But the exact answer to this question can only be given by the owner of an amazing miracle of technology. Khabarovsk entrepreneur Pavel Mashinistov assembled an SUV with his own hands, combining Suzuki, UAZ and special equipment.

Fishing Idea

-An answer to the question: where to buy one? there can be only one - with me! This is a piece copy, there is no second such in nature. Only it is not for sale: I did it for myself, for convenience and for the sake of my soul, why would I part with it?- Pavel laughs.

The idea to create a comfortable and passable SUV came to Pavel Mashinistov about six years ago. An avid fisherman and hunter, he once thought about what a car should be that would easily overcome any off-road without creating problems for the owner. As Pavel says, "so that you don't have to walk in the mud behind a tractor, pulling out a stuck jeep." Lightweight but stable, powerful, but not consuming too much fuel, durable, comfortable ... And at the same time - not too expensive.

At that time, cars that met the above requirements did not exist in nature. And then Pavel decided to make the car of his dreams with my own hands! Fortunately, there were quite enough skills for this. An auto mechanic by training, Pavel has worked with various equipment all his life, from cars to special equipment.

Deciding not to postpone the venture indefinitely, Pavel soon bought an inexpensive 1993 Suzuki Escudo, the lightest and most compact of the jeeps. And the work on creating a giant car began to boil!

- First of all, I took up the body, lifted it from the frame. Then he put axles with gearboxes from UAZ, a rigid differential lock and reinforced axle shafts. This is so that the total load on the wheels is reduced, while the transmission of torque falls on the wheel with the best grip. The car has a permanent four-wheel drive... To improve cross-country ability, I replaced the "native" 1.6-liter engine with a more powerful, two-liter, but also from "Suzuki Escudo" and a gearbox. The jeep weighs only 1900 kg, this engine is enough for him. But thanks to this ratio, the fuel consumption of my all-terrain vehicle, despite its impressive size, is not at all great - about 13 liters per 100 km on asphalt. Wheels - rubber measuring 120 by 60 cm and 21-inch disks specially ordered in Moscow. They were very expensive. Usually, such rather big wheels are intended for special special equipment, storming completely impassable off-road. All the work alone was beyond my power. Friends helped: with the body, and then with the design of the wings - Zinovy Kravtsov, with the transmission work - Andrey Timofeev.

In front of his "giant" Pavel placed a winch, designed for 3 tons, with which the jeep can pull itself out or help other cars get out. True, larger cars than the Nissan Terrano, light homemade all-terrain vehicle will not take out, otherwise he himself risks being damaged. On the roof, Pavel made a hatch, but not just as an element of tuning, but for convenience: during outdoor activities, it is convenient to explore the surroundings from it. The design of the wings also serves for comfort - the coating is waterproof. If something happens on the road, then in a special box attached to the back instead of a spare wheel, there is everything you need to fix the breakdown on the spot with your own hands.

"Where I look, I go there"

As a result, this unique car- a square with giant wheels - cost its owner about 700 thousand rubles. In comparison with the factory, especially new jeeps, it is inexpensive, but in terms of its qualities the home-made miracle, in Pavel's opinion, is ahead of all the "ready-made" options. The man managed to embody all his ideas in this car.

In March 2010, the SUV drove onto the roads of the Khabarovsk Territory for the first time. Since then, the giant drives, as a rule, outside the city; for everyday life, Pavel has a Toyota Camry. A jeep is used for hunting and fishing trips. And here he has no equal.

- Both in summer and in winter, wherever I look, I go there. Whether through soft mud, through swampy areas, through snowdrifts. The main thing is that there are no trees in front, and everything else is not an obstacle. My car can easily go where even a tank gets bogged down. But what can I say, she can swim on water, if, of course, not too deep. It accelerates quickly, 120 km / h just goes, and then I did not check: I have it not for racing.

Self-made transport does not remain without attention even in the deep taiga, and there will always be an interested fisherman. What can we say about city trips!

- Everyone is looking at, taking pictures, interested. It happens that even the traffic cops stop documents to check, and along the way they will ask a couple of questions. And even more so drivers. “Selling? Where did you buy it? How much do the wheels cost? Where to do the same tuning ”? They often ask: how did you register? There were no difficulties with this. The all-terrain vehicle is registered in the traffic police in the most usual way and passes the inspection perfectly. Its width is only 230 cm, and in order to be in the category of agricultural machinery, you need 280 cm, all units are standard.

And sometimes Paul is asked: how to collect this yourself? And then the conversation, of course, drags on: craftsmen always have something to talk about.

Yulia Mikhaleva

"Comfort, breadth of view, beauty!" - this is how cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov commented on this car after sitting behind the wheel. The creator of the "jeep" S. Hopshanosov from Yerevan received the 1st prize at the show of self-made cars, the car was shown in the TV show "You Can Do It".

We have no doubt, our dear reader, that you can build such a car. The experience of Stanislav Khopshanosov will help you with this.

Thinking of a car for travel, the author decided to lay in it constructive simplicity, reliability in operation, unpretentiousness and ease of maintenance. When choosing the layout, I stopped at the “jeep” scheme, but its version differs from the classic one in that it has only one drive axle - the rear one, for simplicity.

Outwardly, the "jeep" looks smaller than, say, LuAZ, although in terms of the size of the cabin and trunk it is not inferior to it. This is achieved, firstly, by tightly “packing” the engine compartment and, secondly, by the external placement of part of the luggage (on the roof), the spare wheel (on the left side) and the canister (at the back). Full weight - 900 kg.

Simplifications, however, did not affect driving performance cars, she has already covered hundreds of thousands of kilometers. Every year it was used for trips from Yerevan to Moscow and back. Including with a homemade trailer-dacha weighing 500 kgf. Participation in the motor rally made this journey much longer. However, the construction has withstood the test of the roads of Karelia and the Kola Peninsula. The Jeep confidently walked both along the highway (at a speed of up to 120 km / h) and along a broken track.

Sometimes, S. Khopshanosov helped his fellow motorists who got stuck, pushing their cars with the front bumper of his all-terrain vehicle.

In his native Armenia, he climbed on it to an altitude of 3000 m above sea level, overcoming impassable roads, rocky heaps, slopes up to 30 °.

The hardships of the road are easily transferred in a comfortable and cozy car interior. In hot weather, you can slide any of the four side windows to bring in fresh air. Or, if that is not enough, open the sunroof.

Rice. 1. General form jeep all-terrain vehicle

There are many other simple and original design solutions in the car. For example, how the body works. It consists of a space frame and an outer skin. The frame, designed for significant torsion and bending loads, is welded from square and rectangular steel tubes. The less stressed hood, doors and rear window are made of channels, T-bars and riveted corners.

The floor in the passenger compartment and the hood lining are made of corrugated duralumin sheets with a thickness of 2 mm. The body skin is made of 1.5 mm thick smooth sheets. They are attached to the frame with M5 countersunk screws. The joints of the sheets are hidden by rubber and metal pads.

Rice. 2. Body frame:
1 - front beam (50X25 mm), 2 - elements of the engine compartment (50X25 mm), 3 - engine mounting cradle, 4 - shock absorber bracket, 5 - front spar (50X50 mm), 6 - bonnet beam (40X40 mm), 7 - elements of the rear wall of the engine compartment (50X25 mm), 8 - threshold (50X25 mm), 9 - rear spar (40X40 mm), 10 - board (25X20 mm), 11 - rear cross member (40X40 mm), 12 - window sill crossbar (25 X 20 mm), 13 - trailing bracket, 14 - earring - rear spring, 15 - arch rear wheel(corner 25X25 mm), 16 - intermediate cross member (40x40 mm) with pins for fastening the shock absorber to the body, 17 - rear spring bracket, 18, 21 - door pillars (40X40 mm), 19 - front cross member (40x40 mm), 20 - struts (50X25 mm), 22 - front spring shackle 23 - front spring bracket.

The cabin is lined from the inside with a thin layer of foam rubber and soft plastic. Triplex glazing and doors are equipped with rubber seals from cars of the Volga Automobile Plant. The floor is covered with rubber and synthetic mats. All this reduces the noise level in the cabin and prevents dust from entering.

Instrument cluster and the glove box are homemade. Front seats with reclining backs - "Zhiguli". Rear passenger seat, designed for three people, homemade and has a fixed back. Behind him, below, - fuel tank with a capacity of 45 liters (from the "UAZ") with a neck brought out under rear bumper... There is an inner luggage compartment above the tank. Access to it through the rear window.

The principle of "simplicity plus reliability" extended to power plant: the engine and gearbox are taken together with the units serving them from the "Zhiguli" VAZ-2101. Only the paper oil filter was replaced by a cheaper inertial filter from ZAZ-968.

The rear axle, taking into account the possibility of towing a trailer, was taken from the VAZ-2102 and slightly modified: the lower support cups of the suspension springs and the brackets for attaching the upper jet rods were removed. Instead, two U-shaped suspension cushions are welded to the bridge beam.

The springs are used from the front suspension of the UAZ-469 vehicle. Each package consists of five sheets coated with graphite grease before assembly. They are suspended from the body frame in the area of the rear spars.

Rice. 3. Modification of the rear axle:
1 - lower support cup of the external suspension (removed, a spring cushion is welded on instead), 2 - an upper reaction rod mounting bracket (removed), 3 - left cushion cushion (welded).

In addition to the springs, there are telescopic shock absorbers. By rubber-metal hinges of the tanks, like on Zhiguli, they are attached to the rear axle brackets, and by the casing hinges - to the pins on the intermediate cross member of the frame.

Torque from engine to rear axle transmitted by a cardan shaft from the "Volga" GAZ-21. The choice of this particular type is due to the fact that it is simpler and more reliable and does not require special care. True, the bore holes do not match, therefore, adapters were machined to connect the shaft to the gearbox and axle flanges.

Rice. 4. Adapter.

They are steel washers with a diameter of 100 mm and a thickness of 33 mm, in which 8 through holes are drilled. In 4 corresponding holes, M8 threads are cut along the flange, and in the rest M10

As for the front axle, it is completely self-made: When designing it, Hopshanosov was guided by his favorite principle of "simplicity plus reliability". The line of reasoning was something like this: front axle very responsible unit. It provides traffic control, the “health” of the entire car depends on its “well-being”. Therefore, the fewer parts and movable joints in it, the better.

Rice. 5. Front axle:

1 - pivot pin, 2 - upper support platform, 3 - bolt n upper ball bearing, 4 - lining, 5 - pipe 50X X 25 mm, 6 - main pipe, 7 - sprung platform, 8 - shock absorber trunnion bracket, 9 - bolt and a lower ball bearing, 10 - a lower support platform, 11 - a shock absorber trunnion.

Three years of operation showed that the decision was correct. What kind of stones and potholes fell under the front wheels - nothing at all. This is how the bridge works.

Its main element is a thick-walled seamless steel pipe 060 and a length of 1100 mm. Suspension cushions, shock absorber mounting pins and ball bearings of the front suspension are welded to it.

Rice. 6, Hatch layout:
I - hatch, 2 - handle, 3 - guide, 4 - roof, 5, 6 - gutters.

When assembling the front axle, it is necessary to take into account the camber of the wheels, therefore the support pads were attached to the pipe in a certain order. First, the lower ones were welded and (also lower) ball bearings of the pivot pins of the Zhiguli wheels were screwed onto them. The upper pads were first attached to the corresponding ball bearings of the pivot pins, and then welded to the pipe. Moreover, the camber angle was 0 ° 20/0 ° 30 ", which corresponds to a 2-3 mm difference between the dimensions taken from the edges of the rims of the wheels to the vertical (the pipe is horizontal); it was installed using a plumb bob. The front axle is also attached to the body frame , like the rear one, - with springs (four sheets in a package) using bolts and clamps and telescopic shock absorbers, the rods of which rest against special brackets on the front side members.

Rice. 7. Steering drive:
I - steering shaft, 2 - cardan joints, 3 - intermediate shaft, 4 - steering gear, 5 - fixed rod, 6 - adjustable rod, 7 - double lever of the right wheel, 8 - pivot pin, 9 - single lever of the left wheel.

Toe-in is regulated by a steering rod (from the Volga GAZ-21).

The control device of the all-terrain vehicle is also very simple and reliable. Turning the steering wheel, the driver, through two shafts and two hinges (from the ZIL-130) located under the hood, acts on the steering mechanism fixed on the front beams in front of the radiator grill. Further, the force is transferred by an unregulated traction to the double (welded of two) lever of the right pivot pin, and from it by an adjustable rod to the lever of the left pivot pin.

Brake system, the interior heater, headlights and wiring are borrowed from the VAZ-21011 Zhiguli, the rear lights are from the Skif trailer, and the windshield wipers and control devices are used from the UAZ-469 car.

S. Hopshanov (Sam 1993 01)

It seems to be incredible, but from the most ordinary passenger car it is possible to make a real jeep yourself. No kidding! Let's see how this is possible in principle.

The frame of the machine consists of 3 cross beams and 2 longitudinal spars, which are located with some convergence.

The latter have a very complex cross-section, and are based on two 0.32 mm water pipes welded together. A box of 2 L-shaped steel sheets is also attached to the pipes by welding from above. Typically, the spar section height can range from 120 mm at the center of the frame to 80 mm at the ends. The square crossbeams are welded from sheet steel, 2 mm thick, and the front beam also serves as a spare oil tank. It has filler and drain holes with plugs. Additional rigidity to the frame, in addition to the cross members, is given by 2 diaphragms, which are bent from a steel sheet.

Make yourself a jeep for only $ 600? Easily.

The engine along with the gearbox is borrowed from the VAZ-2101 car. And oily and air filters slightly redone.

The chassis and transmission were used from the GAZ-69, but with the use of some separate parts from the UAZ-46E. Cardan between transfer case and gearbox, homemade. But the cardan half coupling with a cross in it is serial, from the GAZ-69 car.

Instead of the springs of both axles, the rear leaf springs of the GAZ-24 Volga are used, but to improve the softness of the ride, you can use homemade earrings, which are 20 mm longer than on the Volga. The shock absorbers are also taken from the GAZ-24. The springs themselves are installed parallel to the frame side members, i.e. at an angle to the axis of the vehicle. But this does not impair their work in any way.

The body can be made of steel sheet with a thickness of 1.0-1.2 mm. It all consists of relatively small panels that are connected by spot welding.

For the manufacture of doors, sheet steel 1.4 mm thick is used, and the rest of the body is assembled from panels 1.2 mm thick; millimeter steel is suitable for the manufacture of the front fenders. When fitting windshield a drift can be used. The panels are joined using spot welding.

Locks and door hinges can be homemade, although using ready-made ones, say, from Zhiguli, is also not bad.

The cockpit windows are borrowed from the VAZ-2121 "Niva". For the installation of which an effective solution has been found: a steel corner with a thickness of 1.2-2 mm is welded under the rubber seal around the perimeter of the window.

Bumpers are prepared by rolling from 1.6 mm steel sheet.

We propose to make the hood from steel panels, surrounded by a frame made of a 0.16 mm thin-walled pipe along the entire perimeter. A thin foam pad can be provided in front of the windshield, behind which the wipers can be removed.

It is convenient to take the steering control from the GAZ-69, and the brake system from the GAZ-24. Headlights - motorcycle, from "Chezet". The inner pair of them must be raised by 10 mm so that the front of the car takes on a completely finished look. Direction indicators and sidelights are homemade. Taillights from "Moskvich-2140".

The fuel tank of the machine is an 80-liter steel sheet tank, reinforced between the 2 rear cross-beams on the frame.

The awning frame is welded from 0.25 mm water pipes. There are four much thinner crossbars under the roof, three of which are removable.

The front seats of the car belong to the GAZ-24 "Volga" car. But they are slightly altered. You can do the rear ones yourself.

In conclusion, I would like to say about the operational data. Probably the main advantage of a jeep is its excellent cross-country ability. Even snow drifts are a barrier to homemade cars.

Instructions

When building an SUV, be guided by the requirements developed over the years by fans of extreme tourism. A real SUV must have: high ground clearance (at least 220 mm), a high-torque engine (better) with water hammer protection, power steering, a shock absorber on the steering linkage, 31 or 33 inch wheels, differential locks, powerful power sills and bumpers, powerful towing hooks, winch, underbody protection, large roof rack, radio and navigation.

Start with the wheels. 70% off-road qualities vehicle depends on tire size and tread pattern. Besides, big wheels save the suspension from hard blows, allow you to get out of the truck or tractor track, increase. When choosing tires according to the tread pattern, be guided by the size of the lugs. In most cases when installed on an SUV big wheels body lift will be required.

Lift the suspension. If the SUV is frame, raise the body above the frame by installing oversized spacers. Ordinary hockey pucks can be used as spacers. At the same time, geometric passability will improve and it will be possible to install large wheels. Do not forget that this will also increase the center of gravity.

Perform hydraulic protection on the engine. This is necessary not only for, but also for the motor. For the procedure, it comes down to installing a snorkel - a pipe for air intake at roof level. For a gasoline engine, additionally protect the ignition system and spark plugs from water. If you don't want to mess around, get ready-made kits. At self-production snorkel, try to use the highest quality materials possible. In this case, the pipe must have a sufficiently large cross-section and have no more than 2-3 bends. Its fastening must withstand blows from oncoming tree branches.

Additionally protect the transmission from water: repair the breather valves in the axles, transfer case and gearbox in good condition and bring them out with plastic pipes as high as possible. Seal the filler neck and engine. Protect the underbody under the engine, gearbox, gas tank, steering racks. Take aluminum or steel as the material.

The steering damper (damper), which protects the steering wheel from shocks transmitted from the wheels, is standardly installed on SUVs such as Defender or Mercedes G-Class... For self-installation of such, purchase a double-acting shock absorber, calculate the attachment points on the steering linkage and secure it with high quality.

Power bumpers and thresholds that can withstand jacking up an SUV from any position, purchase from firms engaged in OFF-ROAD tuning, or make it yourself. In the manufacture of such products, it is important to observe certain subtleties. Therefore, if you want to make these parts yourself, be sure to consult with professionals. Power bumpers must have powerful towing hooks (eyes) and be welded directly to the frame. Front bumper must be designed for the installation of a winch.

Install the mechanisms for locking the interaxle and interwheel differentials. They are sold as ready-to-use kits and are designed to be fitted to the differential housing. Proprietary mechanisms work more reliably and more accurately than standard ones. The main disadvantage of locks is the ability to damage the transmission if you forget to turn them off after overcoming off-road.

Put on the roof expeditionary trunk... It is an indispensable item for off-road travel. The trunk can be welded independently from pipes of the desired size. Also install a GPS navigation system in your car to avoid getting lost in the terrain. If you are planning to travel not alone, but as part of several cars, put a 27 MHz CB radio station

How to make an SUV based on a regular passenger car. Frame this car consists of two longitudinal spars, located with some toe, and three cross beams.

The spars have a rather complex section. They are based on two welded water pipes 032 mm, to which a box of two L-shaped bent steel sheets is also attached by welding from above. The spar section height ranges from 120 mm in the center of the frame to 80 mm at the ends. The square crossbeams are welded from 2 mm thick steel sheet, and the front beam also serves as a reservoir for oil, therefore it has a drain and a filler hole with plugs. In addition to the cross members, two diaphragms bent from steel sheet give additional rigidity to the frame (the front is 2 mm thick, the rear one is 1.6 mm).

The engine is borrowed from the VAZ-2101 car together with the gearbox (although on N. Yakovlev's car, the latter was taken from the VAZ-2103 - perhaps this is the only significant difference in jeeps). Air and oil filters slightly redone.

Transmission and chassis used from the GAZ-69 with the use of separate parts from the UAZ-46E. One cardan - between the gearbox and the transfer case - is homemade. True, the cardan half-coupling and the crosspiece in it are serial, from the GAZ-69.

The rear leaf springs of the GAZ-24 "Volga" car were used as the springs of both axles, however, to improve the softness of the ride, homemade earrings were used - 20 mm longer than on the "Volga" (the size was obtained experimentally). Shock absorbers are also from GAZ-24. The springs are installed parallel to the frame side members, that is, at an angle to the machine axis. However, this did not deteriorate their work in the least.

The body is made of steel sheet 1.0-1.2 mm thick. Moreover, it all consists of relatively small (no more than 1 m long) panels connected by a spot welded.

At first we tried to use fiberglass, but nothing worked. Then they opted for metal, - recalls Nikolai Yakovlev. However, this is quite understandable: Nikolai works as a welder, and, of course, he is familiar with this technology. This should be borne in mind by every self-made product: it is very important to find "your" material.

We started to make the body with ... doors! - adds Vladimir Kapusto. Maybe it will seem unexpected to someone. However, those who already have some experience in auto design know that making doors is one of the most difficult operations. It is not surprising that many do-it-yourselfers tend to use ready-made doors from serial cars. Unfortunately, such solutions sometimes run counter to the requirements of the overall design of the structure.

The most common operation in the construction of a kuzoz is bending. It is not very convenient to perform it in a vice, so Yakovlev and Kapusto equipped their garage with an electromagnetic stove: this significantly increased labor productivity.

For the doors, sheet steel with a thickness of 1.4 mm was used, the rest of the body was assembled from panels with a thickness of 1.2 mm; except for the front fenders, which have gone millimeter steel. The drift was used very limited: mainly when adjusting the windshield. The panels were joined using spot welding, for which a simple device, shown in the figure, was made from ordinary pliers.

Behind the windshield, a water pipe is welded along the perimeter, which, together with the front pillar of the frame, serves as a safety arc when the car rolls over.

The hinges and door locks are homemade, although it would be advisable to use ready-made ones - say, from Zhiguli. Wailing handles and lifting mechanism - from "Moskvich-2140".

The cockpit windows were borrowed from the VAZ-2121 "Niva" car. To install them, the designers found a simple and effective solution: a corner of steel 1.2-2mm thick was welded along the perimeter of the window under a rubber seal. It would be much more difficult to knock out the flange.

The bumpers were prepared by rolling from steel sheet 1.6 mm thick, for which it was necessary to specially grind two shaped rollers and build an elementary rolling machine.

The hood is made of steel panels, surrounded by a frame made of a thin-walled tube Ø 16 mm. A thin foam pad is provided in front of the windshield, behind which the windshield wipers are removed. The hood tilts forward on homemade horseshoe hinges. The latter are hinged on a U-shaped frame, which is at the same time a radiator stand.

The tailgate of the car also has a thin tube frame; outside it is covered with steel sheet 1.2 mm thick, and inside - hardboard.

The steering is taken from the GAZ-69, however, due to the peculiarities of the layout, the angle of inclination of the steering column had to be slightly reduced. The brake system is from the GAZ-24. Headlights - motorcycle, from "Chezet". Initially, all four headlights were located strictly horizontally, the car, as they say, did not look good. Then the inner pair was raised by 10 mm - and everything fell into place. The front of the car has acquired a completely finished look.

Rear lights from "Moskvich-2140", sidelights and direction indicators are homemade. The instrument panel is from GAZ-24, but the top panel of our own production is made of polystyrene, pasted over with cloth.

The gas tank of the car is originally made. It consists of an 80 L capacity welded from sheet steel, mounted on a frame between two rear crossbeams.

The awning frame is welded from water pipes Ø 25 mm. There are four thinner cross members under the roof, three of which are removable. Plexiglass is glued into the awning windows. The method of attaching the plexiglass to the tarpaulin turned out to be very effective, so it can be recommended to all lovers of auto construction. A pocket is sewn to the tarpaulin along the perimeter of the window, glass is inserted into it and the edges are impregnated with dichloroethane (or acetone) as shown in the figure. The tarpaulin is laid on a flat surface (for example, plywood), covered with plastic wrap and loaded - best with sand.

The front seats of the car from the GAZ-24 "Volga" car are slightly altered. The rear ones are self-made, it is planned to modify them so that when the car is converted into a pickup, they turn into the rear wall of the cab.

In conclusion, briefly about the operating data. Perhaps the main advantage of the jeep is its excellent cross-country ability. Last winter, during one of their fishing trips, Nikolai and Vladimir were caught in a heavy snowfall, and whole drifts of snow grew on top of the ice. But the home-made cars did not care about this obstacle, while the nearby Niva had to wait for help.

In the pickup version, the maximum carrying capacity (when the rear springs become horizontal) of the machine is 800 kg. V. Kapusto's car runs on AI-93 gasoline, and its fuel consumption is about 10 liters per 100 mm of run. The engine of N. Yakovlev's jeep was redesigned for A-76 gasoline; fuel consumption is somewhat higher.
