A deadly stuck nut is a common problem. It is often encountered by motorists, plumbers, cyclists and locksmiths. It always takes a lot of time and effort to unscrew a rusty nut.

There are several ways that will make it easier to solve such a difficult task. But before you apply different tricks, familiarize yourself with the reasons that lead to nut sourness and safety precautions.

Why is a rusty nut difficult to unscrew

Rust is the main culprit for poorly loosening nuts. This is one of the types of corrosion that appears on the surface of iron. The reason for such formations is the reaction of the metal with oxygen in a humid environment.

In the process of corrosion formation, there is a manifold increase in the oxidation product (rust). As a result, the nut and bolt merge tightly together. The acidification of metals can be so strong that it is easy to break the bolt when you try to turn the nut.

Contamination is another culprit for poorly loosening nuts. Small particles of metal shavings and dust remain on the thread surface. When the nut is tightened, dirt becomes an additional obstacle. As a result, the threaded surfaces of the bolt and nut become jammed.

The third reason is that the nut is too tight. Some novice locksmiths tighten the nut almost with their foot. A little time passes, the tightly clamped metal surfaces stick to each other, aggravating the situation. As a result, a tightly tightened nut cannot be unscrewed.

And the last reason for unsuccessful attempts to turn the nut is a poor-quality tool. In the course of long-term use, the edges of the keys are deformed or grinded. With a damaged tool, it becomes difficult to grasp the nut and pull it off the thread.

Which tool is better to use

A correctly selected tool will help to unscrew the rusty nut faster and not damage it. To successfully cope with the problem, use a set of tools. The following tools are best suited for loosening stuck nuts:

  • a set of heads with a knob;
  • mechanical wrench;
  • socket wrench;
  • spanner keys.

Safety engineering

  • Do not use damaged tools.
  • Unscrew the nut counterclockwise.
  • Fasten the tool securely to the nut.
  • Wear gloves to avoid injury to your hands.

Dissolving rust

You put in a great effort and take a long time to turn the nut, but nothing comes of it. Do not be upset and torture yourself in vain. Set the tool aside until it breaks and use a liquid that can dissolve rusty deposits and reduce friction.

There are many types of such substances, for example, the most famous agent is WD-40. There are other rust-dissolving fluids such as kerosene, carburetor cleaner, gasoline and brake fluid... Table vinegar, iodine and alcohol can be just as effective. Some locksmiths have noticed benefits even in Coca-Cola or Phante, which contain inorganic phosphoric acid.

Instructions

  1. Wet the rusted nut well and wait 15-30 minutes. After the allotted time, take the wrench and try to turn the nut. If it does not work, then the liquid has not penetrated deep enough. Try wetting again, but this time with a napkin or a strip of rag, and then wrap the nut. This will keep the liquid on the metal longer and will be better able to dissolve the rust.
  2. After carrying out a similar procedure, the nut will gradually begin to move. Unscrewing can be accelerated by knocking with a hammer. Then take the key (if possible, lengthen it, for example, with a piece of pipe), securely fix it on the nut and try to rip it off the thread with a very sharp jerk. If the nut is small, then it is better to unscrew the pump (back and forth).

Heating the nut

If the solvents did not help unscrew the nut, then you can try to do this by heating. The high temperature promotes expansion of the metal and the destruction of rust. As a result, the acidified threaded joint loses its strength. Use any heat source such as a hair dryer, gas torch, lighter, or blowtorch.

Instructions: Heat the nut and bolt well (preferably red hot). And then use a spanner wrench to try to unscrew it. In some cases, the nut has damaged edges, so a wrench will not help. To solve this problem, weld the socket head to the nut and warm up the entire structure. Then unscrew the nut using a wrench. Be careful not to burn yourself during heat treatment.

Breaking a nut

This method is not the most profitable, but it often becomes the only life-saving method to free the bolt from the rusty nut. To do this, you can use a chisel, a hacksaw for metal, a grinder or an electric drill.

Instructions

  1. Using a chisel and hammer, start punching the grooves on the sides (the edges of the bolt). Driving in the chisel as deep as possible will increase the inner diameter of the nut. In the end it will lead to destruction threaded connection... Roughly the same can be done with an electric drill, drilling holes in the edges. A broken nut can be easily removed from the bolt. It should be noted right away that these tools are applicable if there is sufficient space to access the nut.
  2. If there is enough free space, then it is better to use a hacksaw for metal or a grinder. These tools will quickly help you deal with the problem. All you need to do is carefully saw the nut along the bolt axis.

This article discussed the causes of nut jamming, safety precautions during work, as well as different ways to help solve the problem. Thanks to the described tips, you can quickly unscrew any rusted nut, saving you time and effort.

First, about the problem in general -

How to tighten a large nut without a suitable wrench?

Sometimes, in order to unscrew a large nut without having a suitable key, it is easier to adapt what is at hand for this than to run around the shops in search of a key. I myself use such a non-tricky device that grabs and unscrews any pipes and large nuts. Moreover, all that is needed for him is a piece of a profile pipe of 30-40 centimeters and a motorcycle chain. Cycling is also suitable for small sizes. The chain, with one end we weld to the pipe, and the second, tightly round the nut, we run inward. We make a hall and the "clamp" is tightened, and the pipe acts as a lever. After an adjustable wrench and a gas wrench, this is the first tool, and it’s cheap - there’s nowhere to go.

Well, for a special case -

Interested in the nut for attaching the mixer to the sink in the kitchen.

I can advise the following.

The best all-round tool for such interesting places is the plumbing wrench with a self-locking movable jaw. He climbs well to such places.

You can bend the jaws at a thin wrench (there are some in the ZIP kits of motorcycles, bicycles and chainsaws), following an example as shown in the photo below -

For a specific size of a nut located in a hard-to-reach place, you can make such a "grip" from a metal plate 4-5 mm thick. on the handle and with a crank.

Mainly on the clamping nuts of the mixers, the edges are 32.36 or 38 mm. Car enthusiasts may have a hub wrench of this size and will work well for this purpose too. It looks like the picture below. In the same figure, I highlighted the area of the key, which can be taken as the idea of a homemade key - weld two pins on a suitable-sized tube that will abut against the corners of the nut edges, and make a knob from below.

How to tighten nuts and bolts

Lever torque wrench. Simple, cheap, reliable.

Well, the repair is entering the final stage - it's time to start assembling. How are nuts and bolts usually tightened? "From the heart"! One will pull up, and then also rest his foot against something - so that "tightly". Another will put on a pipe with a key, and insert a crowbar into it ...

In fact, all fasteners are designed to be tightened with a strictly defined effort - in technology it is called a moment. Not less than necessary (or it really will be unscrewed), but not more (you will rip off the thread) ... But where is this golden mean? A torque wrench will tell you - it will measure and show you the magnitude of the moment-force. And those keys, which are the most modern, will also "prompt" out loud when there is enough.

The oldest torque wrenches have a dial and a watch-like mechanism. In them, when a bolt or nut is tightened, a thick steel rod is twisted, and quite insignificantly. The gear reducer magnifies this tiny movement many times over, and the scale needle is rotated just enough for the mechanic to judge the force applied to the fastener. This device does not differ with particular accuracy, especially not new: as the mechanism wears out, the gaps in the gears and their axes cause backlash of the arrows, and sometimes jam.

Later they came up with a simpler tool. A rod of strictly defined stiffness and length is attached to the base of the square key (for a hex head). And on the other end is a knob with a scale.

This ancient tool has survived over a hundred engine repairs. One of its advantages is compactness.

An arrow is also attached to the square. When the mechanic tightens the nut, the rod bends, and the arrow, always stationary relative to the square, shows the force on the scale shifted with the end of the rod. It is a very simple and cheap tool. And if the manufacturer has exactly withstood the manufacturing technology, then the most reliable one. The rod may deform due to old age - the arrow in the free state will not point to zero. To restore accuracy to the instrument, bend the pointer - it is made of mild steel.

Most modern, sophisticated torque wrenches are more likely to be used in specialized workshops or on a factory assembly line. They have a scale that vaguely resembles a micrometer scale, and, being guided by it, you can very accurately set the required effort. When it is reached, there will be a loud click, and the hand will feel the impact. So I finished with this nut - it's time to move on to the next one. Such a tool is very convenient if, for example, you need to pull off the crankcase halves - tighten 20-25 bolts with the same effort. With less monotonous work, it is tedious to rebuild the device to suit "your" force for each nut - here it is more convenient to use a simpler tool.

Micrometer scale

With what force to tighten the fasteners - you can find out about this from the repair instructions. Do not rely on your experience and do not try to use "someone else's" documentation. Even on motorcycles of a similar design, fasteners for identical assemblies should be tightened with different torques (see Table 2). It may differ several times! If suddenly you do not find a recommendation, then the nut or bolt is standard, and you need to tighten them with a standardized torque (see Table 1).

For complex parts tightened with many bolts, the instructions include a diagram showing the tightening sequence. If you do not follow it, you can warp the entire unit, leak or jam some shaft. Are there several bolts, and the sequence of their fastening is not specified? Hence, they need to be tightened crosswise. And gradually, in several steps, until the torque wrench shows the right moment.

When reading the tightening torques table, pay attention to the notes. They may contain special assembly conditions. For example, that the threads should be lubricated with oil or thread sealant before tightening ... If there are no additional requirements, it is assumed that the fasteners must be clean and dry. And preferably neither strongly chilled nor hot - at room temperature.

Installation of cylinder head on Chery Very, Chery Bonus

Two locating pins are located on the upper plane of the cylinder block. The cylinder head dowel pins are located on the second and fourth threaded holes on the left side of the cylinder block (viewed from the front) and are “flexible” dowel pins. The tension between the dowel pins and the cylinder block is 0.053-0.203 mm. The dowel pin and cylinder head are assembled with a transitional fit, while the clearance is 0.016 - 0.084 mm.

Check the cylinder head gasket, which must be smooth and clean, free from unevenness and scratches. Install the cylinder head gasket on the flat surface of the cylinder block with the dowel pins with the part number facing up.

Wipe the contact surface of the combustion chambers of the cylinder head, the top surface of the cylinder block and the threaded holes. There must be no accumulation of oil at the bottom of the threaded holes of the cylinder block, otherwise it may lead to cracks in the cylinder block.

Install the washers of the cylinder head bolts on the bolts with the chamfer upwards and the second smooth surface to the cylinder head. Next, insert the bolts into the holes in the cylinder head, and then pre-tighten 3/4 of a turn.

The cylinder head bolts are tightened by hand four times in the order shown in the illustration.

Tighten the bolts alternately to 20 - 25 Nm.

1. Tighten the bolts alternately to 40 - 45 Nm.

2. Turn the bolts 90 degrees in the same sequence.

3. Turn the bolts again 90 degrees in the same sequence.

It doesn't matter if you have a bicycle, car, furniture, or any other item. But you definitely had such a situation when you unscrewed the nut yourself. What should be done to prevent the nut from loosening? You will learn more about this in the video tutorial.

A traditional nut and bolt can be used, but this will not save you from loosening. Using a torque wrench, we tighten the nut by hand, but at high vibrations it will begin to loosen. To hold it, we need to tighten another lock nut on top. With the help of a lock nut, we can stop the unscrewing of a regular nut, but this does not give a 100% guarantee. It is a disposable product.

You can use a traditional grower washer, it is disposable and vibration free. It is possible to replace an ordinary nut with a nut with a flange, which has a wide bearing surface and special notches. They dig into the support platform, but the flanged nut does not give us one hundred percent guarantee.

Serrated washers

One of the most popular and inexpensive solutions is a toothed washer. She has reliable contact with the entire surface and a low price. The main problem that arises is that you can tightly tighten and thereby flatten the teeth. Thus, they turn into an ordinary flat washer.

Toothed washers can only be used up to the specified torque. Highly important point when using, do not overtighten the nut and thereby smooth the washer. The low price for toothed washers will help solve the local loosening of the nut. Only two options will give us a 100% guarantee.

Wedge washer

The wedge washer is a system of two washers. These washers are used in pairs and tightened with the required tightening torque. The trick is that the angle of the inner wedges is higher than the angle of rise of the thread. In this connection, spontaneous unscrewing becomes impossible.

In order to unscrew the nut, we need to make more effort than tightening. The wedge washer provides a 100% guarantee against spontaneous loosening.

Anaerobic thread anchors

Another reliable and convenient way to fix the nut is to use an anaerobic thread lock. To do this, we need to apply liquid to the place of the thread where the nut will be. It is quite flowing and creeps easily over the bolt.

We screw the nut onto the bolt and wait, nothing else needs to be done. After some time, the latch will harden and the structure will not be collapsible. In order to unscrew, we need to heat up or make more effort working with a key.

We hope this video tutorial was useful and interesting. Write your comments, ask questions, we will be happy to answer. Recommend to your friends and acquaintances.
