The restyled Volkswagen Touareg of the 2nd generation (the beginning of sales - 2014) is very close in technique to the Porsche Cayenne. The basic suspension of the German SUV is formed by a front double-link and rear multi-link structures. Ground clearance- 201 mm. An optional closed loop pneumatic chassis is available with adaptive dampers in three modes: Normal, Comfort and Dynamic. Tuareg ground clearance with air suspension varies in the range of 160-300 mm. This makes it possible to overcome fords up to 580 mm deep, while the standard chassis is designed for crossing water obstacles with a maximum depth of 500 mm.
The motor lineup of the Volkswagen Tuareg in Russia includes the following gasoline and diesel units:
- V6 3.6 FSI 249 hp, 360 Nm;

All modifications of the Volkswagen Tuareg are equipped with a system all-wheel drive however there are two variations of it: 4Motion and 4XMotion. More simple circuit 4Motion includes a Torsen asymmetrical center differential (40:60) with locking options and a classic rear differential. The "off-road" version of 4XMotion additionally provides for the presence of transfer case a lowering row with a gear ratio of 2.69: 1, and in the rear differential - a locking mechanism. The 4XMotion system, together with the Terrain Tech package, which includes five modes, is intended for versions with a 245 hp 3.0 TDI diesel engine.
The SUV has only one gearbox - an 8-speed "automatic" Aisin AL1000 8A.

The general public was able to appreciate the mid-size crossover Volkswagen Tuareg for the first time in 2002 at an auto show in Paris. Since the days of the Kubelwagen jeep, which was produced during the Second World War, the Touareg was only the second SUV created by the specialists of the Volkswagen concern. New car was conceived by the authors as a model with increased cross-country ability and capable of demonstrating the qualities of a sports car. About 300 engineers and designers of the concern, headed by Klaus-Gerhard Wolpert, who today leads the group responsible for the Porsche Cayenne line, worked on the development of the VW Touareg project. In Russia, until March 2017, the Tuareg SKD was carried out at a car plant near Kaluga. Currently, a decision has been made to abandon the production of these cars at a domestic plant, in view of the fact that the profitability of imported and assembled cars in Russia has become equal.
European with African name
The name for the new car, the authors borrowed from one of the Berber peoples living in the northwest of the African continent. It should be said that Volkswagen later once again turned to this African region when choosing the name of another SUV - Atlas: this is how the mountains are called, in the area of which all the same Tuaregs live.
During its 15-year presence on the market, the VW Touareg has repeatedly met the expectations of its creators: three victories in the Paris-Dakar rally - in 2009, 2010 and 2011 - are a prime example of this. The first restyling of the Tuareg happened in 2006, when the VW Touareg R50 modification was first presented and then went on sale. The letter R in the coding means the addition of a number of additional options, including: the Plus package, the Exterieur program, etc. The 2006 Touareg version received modified ABS and cruise control, as well as warning systems about the dangerous approach of a nearby car from behind or from the side ... In addition, deficiencies in the automatic transmission that had occurred in the basic version were eliminated.
In 2010 year Volkswagen presented the next generation Touareg, which provided for a complete set of one of three turbodiesels (3.0-liter capacity of 204 and 240 liters. from. or 4.2-liter capacity of 340 liters. from.), two gasoline engines (volume of 3.6 liters and capacity of 249 or 280 liters. from.), as well as the first hybrid unit in the history of the concern - 3.0-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 333 liters. with. paired with an electric motor with a capacity of 47 liters. with. Among the features of this car:
- Availability center differential Torsen, as well as a spring suspension providing 200mm ground clearance;
- the possibility of completing the Terrain Tech off-road package, which provides a lower gear, locking rear and center differentials, air suspension, thanks to which the ground clearance can be increased to 300 mm.
After restyling in 2014, the Tuareg was completed with:
- bi-xenon headlights;
- the Multi-collision brake system, which includes an automatic brake after an impact;
- optimized cruise control;
- the Easy Open option, thanks to which the driver can open the trunk with a light foot movement when both hands are busy;
- modernized springs;
- two-tone upholstery.
In addition, a 260 hp V6 TDI diesel has been added to the engine range. with.
The third-generation VW Touareg presentation was scheduled for September 2017, but for marketing reasons, the debut was postponed to the spring of 2018, when the new Touareg T-Prime GTE concept will be shown in Beijing.
VW Touareg first generation
The first generation Volkswagen Tuareg is an all-wheel drive SUV with a self-locking center differential (which, if necessary, can be firmly locked by the driver) and several low gears. A rigid blocking is also provided for the rear axle differential. These options, which increase the vehicle's cross-country ability, are complemented by a controlled air suspension, with which you can change the ground clearance from 160 mm on the track to 244 mm off-road, or even 300 mm for driving in extreme conditions.
Initially, it was planned to collect 500 "pilot" copies of the Touareg, despite the fact that half of them were pre-orders, mostly from Saudi Arabia. However, due to the increased demand, it was decided to start mass production. The first diesel version of the Tuareg was not environmentally friendly enough for the American market, and deliveries of the SUV overseas resumed only after improvements in 2006.
The production of the first Touaregs was taken over by the plant in Bratislava. The PL17 platform has become common for VW Touareg, Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7.
Bought in December 2007. Before that, it was simpler: on springs. This has everything (pneumatic, heating everything, electric everything, xenon, etc.) Mileage 42,000 km. The lock was changed for 25,000 under warranty back door... At 30,000, the low-tone signal was replaced for money (the warranty is over). There are 5 seats in the standard version, but if necessary, their number is increased to 7 by installing two additional seats in the trunk area. Modifications with a different number of seats in the cabin (2, 3 or 6) are extremely rare. The number of doors in the VW Touareg is 5. The ergonomics of the Touareg is close to ideal: before the driver's eyes there is an informative instrument panel, the seats are comfortable, adjustable, the interior is spacious. Before buying a Tuareg, namely a Tuareg, not a Taureg, I had to choose for a long time between his classmates (budget 1 million): BMW X5, Lexus RX300 (330), Infiniti FX35, Mercedes ML, Toyota Prado 120, LK100, Murano, CX7, Acura MDX, even the Range Rover Vogue was inexpensive. According to its concept, VW Touareg is a rather unique car, due to the fact that in its driving performance it outperforms most of the mainstream competitors and even some of the premium ones.
