The popular Volkswagen Golf car appeared in 1974. It was a small front-wheel-drive hatchback, the base power unit was a 1.1-liter 50 hp engine. with. Later, a diesel version appeared (1.5 liters, 50 hp) and the most powerful was the Golf GTI with a 1.6-liter 110 hp engine. with. From the very beginning, Golf customers were offered cars not only with a manual transmission, but also with an automatic transmission.

Over time, the lineup was replenished with a convertible and a sedan, which received its own name. Hatchback production ended in 1983, and the convertible continued until 1993. And in South Africa, this car in a modernized form under the name Citi was produced until 2009. The total circulation of the first "Golf" was 6.7 million copies.

2nd generation (A2), 1983-1992

In 1983, the second generation of the Golf debuted. The car became larger, acquired modern equipment - ABS, power steering, on-board computer, in 1986 the all-wheel drive version of Syncro appeared. The "charged" Volkswagen Golf G60 was equipped with a 160-horsepower 1.8-liter engine. A total of 6.4 million cars were produced.

In 1990-1991, the "off-road" Volkswagen Golf Country was produced, developed jointly with Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Such a car differed from the usual all-wheel drive "Golf" by the increased ground clearance by 63 mm (up to 180 mm) and the corresponding accessories. The demand for this version turned out to be much lower than planned - a total of 7,735 cars were made.

3rd generation (A3), 1991-2002

The 1991 Volkswagen Golf III with a completely new design was produced with hatchback, convertible and station wagon bodies. The car was equipped with engines ranging from 1.4 to 2.9 liters with a capacity of 60-190 liters. with. The sedan version began to be called (in the American market, the name remained the same - Jetta). Hatchbacks and station wagons were made until 1997, convertibles - until 2001. In total, almost five million cars rolled off the assembly line.

4th generation (A4), 1997–2010

The "fourth" Golf, which began production in 1997, has grown in length, has become more solid and comfortable with a "" style interior and a wide range of additional equipment. The choice of engines was wide, among them - turbodiesels, gasoline turbo engines, gasoline engine with direct fuel injection. The most powerful version was the Golf R32 (3.2 liters, 238 hp) with four-wheel drive and DSG preselective gearbox. The European version of the sedan has changed its name again -. In Europe, the car was produced until 2006, in Brazil it is still being made.

5th generation (A5), 2003-2009

In 2003, the fifth generation of the model went on sale. The car was produced with hatchback and station wagon bodies, and the sedan version was again named. At the end of 2004, a single-volume hatchback with a different design was presented. In total, 3.3 million cars were produced by 2009.

6th generation (A6), 2009–2012

Debuted in 2008, the "sixth" Golf was, in fact, a deeply modernized car of the previous generation with a new design, the author of which was Walter da Silva.

The range of power units consisted of "aspirated" 1.4 and 1.6 (80 and 102 HP, respectively), turbo engines of the TSI series with a volume of 1.2, 1.4 and 1.8 liters (105-160 forces), as well as 1.6 TDI turbodiesels and 2.0 TDI, developing 105-170 "horses". The cars were equipped with "mechanics" or a preselective robotic gearbox DSG. Especially for the American market, the Volkswagen Golf was offered with a five-cylinder 2.5 petrol engine (172 hp), which could be equipped with a six-speed "automatic".

Also in the lineup was the "hot" hatchback Volkswagen Golf GTI, equipped with a two-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a capacity of 210-235 liters. with. And at the very end of 2009, the Golf R appeared with a two-liter engine forced up to 270 forces and all-wheel drive.

In addition to the three-door and five-door hatchbacks, a station wagon was launched in 2010 (in the American market - Jetta Sportwagen). It was a copy of the previous generation car, but with a front end from the new "Golf". In 2011, a version with a convertible body was introduced, it had a folding fabric top.

Production of the sixth generation Golf continued until 2013, with a total of about 2.9 million of these cars produced.

The name of the car Volkswagen Golf has long become a household name. And VW Golf 5 can be considered one of the standards of the European C-class. The Fifth Golf does not lose its relevance over the years, many people who want to buy a used car witness this. The used Volkswagen Golf 5 remains one of the most demanded cars on the used car market. To help our readers make the right choice, we have collected, analyzed and structured information about the shortcomings, malfunctions and weaknesses of a car: what to look for when buying a used Folz Golf 5. In this we were helped by the reviews of the owners of VW Golf 5 on the automotive forums.

Body and interior Golf 5 with mileage

Generally speaking, this point of our analysis can be safely written in the positive aspects of the Golf V:

  • The body resists corrosion with dignity. Finding some kind of rust on this car is quite difficult, even in places where paint is chipped.
  • The bottom is designed with the unpleasant influence of salt and dirt in mind - the most important elements are covered with plastic plates.
  • There are also no complaints about the VW Golf 5 saloon. During operation, the parts do not loosen, the equipment almost never fails, and there are no unpleasant squeaks.

In the minuses, you can only write down the breakdown of the air conditioning compressor, which is characteristic of the car. Incorrect operation of the windows is sometimes noticeable.

Used MPI, FSI, TDI engines for Golf 5

Given the popularity of Golf at all times, a fairly extensive line of gasoline engines with a cylinder displacement of 1.4 liters to 3.2 liters (80HP-250HP) and diesel 1.9 and 2.0 liter turbodiesels (75HP-170HP) was produced for it. Almost any option can be found in the vastness of our country.
The lion's share of the Golf V was equipped with a petrol 1.6 MPI (102 hp), which, by the way, is considered the most reliable and, according to mechanics, is devoid of characteristic "sores". The more modern 1.6 FSI (115 hp) is practically not found on the domestic market. But the younger 1.4 liter engines, and especially the Golf V with 1.4 FSI, can present "surprises".
Golf 5 with 1.4 FSI engine may have the following problems and malfunctions:

  • The motor has difficulty starting in the cold season at temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius.
  • Too much wear on the timing chain.
  • Replacement of the hydraulic tensioner is also required.
  • Quite often, the ignition coils of the FSI line also fail.

All of the above (except for point 1) is also typical for the 1.6 FSI power plant.
The more powerful 2.0 FSI on the Golf 5 also has disadvantages:

  • The standard corrugations of the exhaust system often fail.
  • The specified mileage for replacing the timing belt is 180 thousand km. However, in fact, only half of this figure is the actual service life.

Among the diesel variants, the most reliable is the Golf 5 1.9 TDI diesel. But the 2.0 TDI turbodiesel has a drawback - fuel injectors often fail.
It should be noted that the manufacturer changes these parts under warranty.
In general, the engine is good and copes tolerably well with domestic diesel fuel. The service life of the turbine is also pleasing.
Another big plus of the diesel engine is quite modest fuel consumption, with a quiet ride of 6 liters per 100 km.

Gearbox and drive for Golf 5 with mileage

Most of the Golf5, like its predecessors, received front-wheel drive. However, there are also models with 4Motion, which connect the rear axle when the front wheels slip. There are no particular complaints about them, everything works quite “according to the passport”.
Among the variations of gearboxes on the Volkswagen Golf 5 were 2 mechanical (manual transmission mechanics 5 and 6 steps), automatic (automatic transmission 6-speed tiptronic), as well as robotic DSG (6 and 7 steps), which can adapt themselves to the driver's driving style. changing the moment of switching on the transfer. In addition, there is a sport mode.
When purchasing a used Golf 5 with a DSG robot, you need to be prepared to push against:

  • ECU malfunctions - jerks appear when switching. At six, it's 1 to 2, and at seven it's back. Re-flashing the ECU at factory service helps.
  • The above problem may not be solved by a trivial software change, so you will have to replace the entire unit, which is quite costly.

The mechanics also have their drawbacks:

  • After running about 90-100 thousand km, the double bearing sags too much (the box becomes noisy).
  • If diesel cars have a knock when shifting gears, then in most cases the flywheel is worn out.

6 tiptronic automatic transmission is highly reliable, and with careful driving it will become capricious (shocks when changing gears, slipping) in a car with a mileage of 120 thousand kilometers or more.

Suspension and steering gear for Golf 5

The suspension on the fifth Golf is usual: MacPherson strut front and rear multi-link. In general, it is good and has a long service life.
In the front suspension, parts fail in approximately the following order:

  • Mileage 80 thousand km. - rear silent blocks on the front suspension arms.
  • Mileage 100 thousand km. - stabilizer struts become unusable.
  • Mileage 150 thousand km. - the rest of the silent blocks wear out.
  • More than this period, stabilizer bushings usually live, as well as ball bearings (up to 200 thousand km).

As for the rear axle, already at 100 thousand it is recommended to change the ball, strut bushings, as well as bumpers. The rest of the details, except, perhaps, the silent blocks, are capable of serving up to the magic figure of 200 thousand km.

Steering problems depend on the Golf V model year:

  • 2004-2006, heavy wear of the rack engagement, as well as of the electric drive. There is a knock during operation.
  • After 2008, the entire assembly was redesigned and significantly improved. The service life of parts (rods and their ends) has also increased. They can be replaced after 150 thousand km, but this is with ideal driving.

There are no complaints about the brake system. Only very old models, released closer to 2004, can have breakdowns.

Cars of the fifth generation for some time - before the start of Russian sales of the next edition - can be found "in cellophane". The most popular version, with a 1.6 liter gasoline engine and an average set of options, will cost about 810 thousand rubles, and taking into account New Year's discounts ... alas, it's still expensive! For this money, you can buy, for example, about one and a half "Chevrolet-Lacetti" or "KIA-Sid" - models that are close in class. But not in spirit, say fans of the "Germans" and go to the secondary market. Here the prices are almost divine: for a three-year period they ask for an average of 540 thousand rubles, and for a car in 2003 - 450 thousand. But you have to look both ways!

UNDERWATER ROCKS

The golf looks neat, and the five stars on the EuroNCAP label are a sign of noble birth. Compared to its predecessor, the torsional rigidity of the body was increased by 15%, and in bending - by 35%. At the same time, the outer body panels have become more pliable. You should not lean on them, unless you intend to mark the car with a “clapper”, as this will be less of interest to hijackers.

Additional alarm does not hurt, but you just need to install it wisely. The abundance of electronics connected by a twisted pair via a CAN bus does not forgive amateurishness. To implant a foreign block, it is not enough to have a soldering iron and electrical tape - you need a matching module, the so-called CAN-bus.

There is no decent protection against mileage twisting, so do not skimp on diagnostics. The dealer scanner is aware of the visits to the TO, and you, by comparing them, can easily identify the catch. True, there are no Russian cars in the database - a paradox, but a fact. Nevertheless, a competent specialist is always able to determine a clear over-mileage based on secondary signs.

There were no particular problems with the "multiplex", except for those complex encodings, which at first caused serious difficulties for dealers when troubleshooting. However, there are practically no electrical failures, especially against the background of Tuareg and Tradewinds. Occasionally, the xenon headlight corrector sensor installed above the rear suspension failed. The device is not demountable, so it was simply changed. Sometimes, due to the oxidation of the contacts, the power window control was capricious. Here the guilt of the owners and the manufacturer is mutual: the first drive in the rain with the glass slightly open, as a result of which water gets on the armrest, and the second did not take care of the tightness of the keys and for the sake of aerodynamics (Cx only 0.32!) Left the windshield without proper drainage.

THRESHOLD OF ABUNDANCE

The rest of the problems with electrical equipment relate to the periphery of the motors, the variants of which are already fifty-five! Volkswagen changes its abbreviation for every trifle - because of other sensors, attachments and other little things. Today, three letters in the encoding are no longer enough; since 2009, a fourth has been added. Letter gibberish can sometimes cause confusion when buying spare parts, so take an old part with you to compare it directly at the counter.

There were several failures of the gasoline pump, and on older cars there were also ignition coils, which, having deteriorated from time to time, simply crumbled in the hands when replacing the spark plugs. The candles themselves serve an average of 30 thousand km, but a lot depends on gasoline - other fuel will kill them even for 10 thousand.

FSI engines (with direct injection) are especially capricious, which, in addition to everything, also suffer from injector leakage. Those are clogged with resinous deposits, and the needle sits loosely in the saddle. Before that, the engine can start badly, triple, detonate under load and, finally, ignite the "Check Engine". Dealers recommend flushing the injectors every 30–45 thousand km, and without dismantling, in order to wash off carbon deposits from the valves along the way.

The abundance of resinous deposits on the valve stems sometimes led to their hanging and, as a result, meeting with the pistons. To a greater extent, this applies to 2.0 liter engines. Do not delay replacing the valve stem seals: their loss of elasticity is the cause of increased carbon deposits.

Diesels have proven to be quite good. Starting in winter with summer diesel fuel is problematic, but this should not be surprising; other complaints, one or two, and missed. So, on 1.9 liter engines, there were a couple of cases of piston destruction. The owners themselves were to blame: they drove to the last, ignoring the noisy rattling with a characteristic tinkling - the first signs of malfunctions in the pump injectors.

The crankcase ventilation system on the latest golf courses has been thoroughly modified. If before the oil separator mesh was often clogged or the hose froze over, which sometimes even squeezed out the oil seals, now it is such a rarity. But jamming in the heat of the air conditioner compressor on cars manufactured before 2005 happens quite often. In this case, the unit is replaced under warranty along with the drive belt.

If a belt is used in the timing drive, we replace it after 120 thousand km, and always together with the tension and roll-in (where it is) rollers. The pump usually lasts a second period. There are hydraulic lifters in the valve mechanism of all motors - they do not need maintenance.

COINCIDENCE

Clutch life depends on driving style and conditions. If trips around the city prevail, then on average - 130 thousand km, along the highway - 150 thousand and more. The replacement is not difficult: the knot is classic (not "inverted"). It is better to change the non-collapsible multi-plate clutch module of the DSG robotic gearbox by specialists, because it is difficult to set the required clearance with the drive plate without tools, and the smoothness of gear shifting depends on it.

With manual transmissions, problems are extremely rare. The machines are also very reliable, but only if the oil is changed on time. This is not provided for by the regulations, one should rely on "taste and color": it is better to change the darkened, with a burnt smell, so as not to repair the box later.

There is no fluid in the steering mechanism - the amplifier is electric. Equipped, by the way, with a fun function: reprogramming (you need a dealer scanner for this), you can change the effort and feedback on the steering wheel. Remember: the increased effort will affect the resource of the steering shaft crosses, because the electric motor of the amplifier stands directly on the rack shaft. However, the weak link, and even then conditionally, in the steering can only be called the outer tips, which begin to tap at 100 thousand km.

Suspensions are quiet: they do not knock with balls and do not creak with silent blocks, even with a mileage of 180 thousand km. Moreover, the struts and bushings of stabilizers, which were consumables on the fourth "golf", turned into long-livers in the fifth. The bearings annoy only the front ones, after about 150 thousand km. They are not cheap (6150 rubles apiece), since they are one with the hubs, but it is much easier to change them. The front pads last an average of 30 thousand km, the rear ones - 45 thousand, and the discs are often enough for three sets of pads. Behind from a long inactivity, the axis of the parking brake mechanism often sours - you just need to use it and do not forget about prevention, that is, lubricate.

As you can see, there were not so many typical sores in the fifth generation of "golfs". It is a pity to see off a successful model to the secondary market!

We are grateful to RUS-LAN for their help in preparing the material.

2008 The sixth generation Golf is introduced.

In 2003, the fifth generation Volkswagen Golf debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show. During the launch of the model, the Golf 5 received five stars in EuroNCAP crash tests. The power frame of the body has become stronger in comparison with the "four" by 15%. Tail panels: fenders, hood, trunk lid are well protected from corrosion by zinc coating. The bottom is covered with plastic protection. By the way, when buying a used Volkswagen Golf 5, pay attention to the condition of this item. If it is not damaged, then most likely the operation of this vehicle was accurate. Salon equipment traditionally resists time perfectly. One has only to pay attention to the stove fan (it makes noise and creaks) and the power window control buttons, they often fail due to water ingress.

Engines and gearboxes for every taste

There were a lot of motors, let's burn about those that are most often found in our country. The Golf 5 was equipped with both gasoline and diesel engines. Of the gasoline engines, the most popular are the simplest 1.6MPI (BSE, BSF, BGU and CCSA). One ignition coil and the most common injection are easy on our fuel. The timing belt will also not ruin the owner with the next replacement - one belt and a roller. In addition, the engine, although it does not amaze with the power figure, is very pulling from the bottom, so it makes no sense to turn it. This will have a good effect on the resource - usually this motor requires serious intervention after 300 - 350 thousand kilometers.

The rest of the engines are more modern, with an FSI (direct injection) injection system, where the main focus of malfunctions is shifted towards fuel quality. High-precision nozzles are particularly affected. Resin and all kinds of nasty things that miraculously end up in gasoline are deposited on the injectors, preventing them from working at full capacity. This is manifested by a drop in traction, increased consumption, and a "check" lamp that does not let you relax. In such cases, regular cleaning (every 30 thousand km) and monitoring the condition of the spark plugs are shown, otherwise individual coils will also throw up problems.

Thundering diesels on Volkswagen cars are the norm. On the Golf 5, the most problem-free two-liter engine (BKD). There are practically no questions on it. Do not forget to change the timing kit, and here it is quite expensive, since three rollers are required for replacement.

Gearboxes, to a greater extent, were mechanical, which pleased with the standard shift accuracy and trouble-free operation. The clutch runs up to 150 thousand km. The machines were found, both traditional and DSG robots. Torque converter "six-speed" are good, there are many questions on DSG. In those days, when Volkswagen engineers were just training to make these boxes, a large number of failures were noted. The electrics are all tied to the CAN bus and do not cause any particular problems.

Chassis is moderately stiff but strong

Front suspension - MacPherson struts, rear multi-link. There is not much to criticize. Even the stabilizer struts hold up well about 80-100 thousand. The wishbone silent blocks are 100-150 thousand km. Stabilizer bushings and ball joints 150 thousand km. The rear suspension is complex in design, but not whimsical to maintain.

Even the rear stabilizer rods can hold up to 150 thousand km. But do not forget that Golf 5 is no longer produced since 2009, so the likelihood that you can find something familiar on the car is minimal. Therefore, when buying a used Volkswagen Golf 5, take a good look at the chassis and ask the previous owner what spare parts and he used consumables in the repair. The steering wheel helps to turn the electric booster. This unit is reliable, convenient and helps to feel the car well at speed, as well as to park easily in the city.

There is nothing to cling to

Overall, the car is very good. The reliability of the Volkswagen Golf 5 is at a high level. Not surprisingly, the next generation, the Golf 6, was built on the basis of the fifth golf course, just slightly refreshed the exterior. There were no shortcomings in this generation of the legendary model.

    Golf Mk1 - 1974 to 1983

The very first Volkswagen Golf of the first generation rolled off the assembly line in March 1974 at the Wolfsburg plant. The car had a front and transverse engine arrangement with front-wheel drive. Golf I was designed by Giorgio Giugiaro. By 1976, a million cars were sold worldwide, and by 1983, the total number of first-generation Golf cars sold, including the Jetta, which was built on the same platform, was 6.72 million units. VW Golf MK1 was also marked by new trends in the automotive industry, so in 1976 the release of a sports version of the Golf GTI hatchback was launched. In the same year, but a little later, the naturally-aspirated Golf-D diesel was released, and in 1982 the Golf GTD turbodiesel appeared, which gave a breakthrough in the introduction of diesels in the compact passenger car segment. In 1979, the VW Golf Cabriolet appeared, which became the bestseller of the time.

    Golf Mk2 - 1983 to 1991

The second generation was distinguished by increased overall dimensions compared to the first generation: the wheelbase increased by 75mm, the length increased by 170mm, and the width by 55mm. It was the first Golf, which began to install such innovative units and systems as a catalyst (1984), anti-lock braking system ABS (1986), power steering and 4-wheel drive (model Syncro). The Syncro is the first model in the compact car segment to be fitted with an all-wheel drive system (1986). As of June 1988, a total of 10 million were sold. units of cars of the Golf model, it took Volkswagen exactly 14 years. And by 1991, the concern sold 6.41 million second-generation Golf cars, after which the third generation appeared.

    Golf Mk3 - from 1991 to 1997

With the launch of the third generation Volkswagen Golf in August 1991, the company ushered in a new era of safety - as of 1992, the Golf Mk3 was the first car to have front airbags. Also, new technologies for the production of the body, which were used in the production of Golf 3, significantly improved the quality of safety in collisions. Also, with the arrival of the Golf 3, such innovations debuted as: the first six-cylinder VR6 engine, cruise control, a catalyst for diesel engines, a direct fuel injection system for diesel engines TDI (1993) and SDI (1995). In 1996, the ABS system was already installed in the basic equipment of the Golf car. In 1993, on the basis of the Golf III, a new convertible and the second generation of the all-wheel drive hatchback Syncro II were presented. In May 1994, Volkswagen sold its 15 millionth Golf model car. In 1997, 4.96 million third-generation Golf cars were sold, followed by the Volkswagen Golf IV.

    Golf Mk4 - 1997 to 2003

With the arrival of the Golf IV, Volkswagen has reached a whole new level of quality in terms of technical innovation and design. The chief designer of the fourth generation of VW Golf was Harmut Warkub, who managed to lay the foundation for the design of all future generations of Volkswagen Golf. It is this generation that is called the style icon in our time.

In 1998, the Golf began to install the emergency braking system (ESC), which in 1999 began to be installed already in the basic configuration. Also in 1998, Volkswagen introduced the world to the all-wheel drive VW Golf 4 4motion with Haldex clutch. The car body was completely galvanized. In 1999, a 6-speed gearbox was installed for the first time on the Golf. On the 25th anniversary (2001) of the Golf GTI, a 180 hp version was released. In 2002, the Golf was first equipped with an FSI engine with direct fuel injection. From the same year, the curtains of side windows began to be installed by default in all Golf 4 cars. In 2003, the sportiest version of the Golf in the entire history of DSG gearbox... In total, PV Golf Mk4 was sold - 4.92 mln. cars.

    Golf Mk5 - from 2003 to 2008

The fifth generation golf boasts a high level of comfort and dynamic performance. In the fifth generation, 8 airbags are available for the first time. They also began to install DSG-7, be-xenon headlights, rain sensor, panoramic sunroof. The Golf GTI (2004) also debuted with a turbocharged direct injection gasoline engine. In 2006, the Twinchrger with a turbine and a supercharger was released. In addition to the standard bodies for Golf, along with these generations, the Golf Plus, Cross Golf and Golf BlueMotion models began to be produced, which surprised everyone with an average gas mileage of 4.5 l / 100 km. Sales Volkswagen Golf Mk5 settled at 3.27mln. cars.

    Golf Mk6 - from 2008 to 2012

For 4 years of production Volkswagen Golf 6 about 2.85 million cars were sold. This generation is distinguished by even higher safety standards - like the previous generation, the car was produced using laser welding, and in EuroNCAP crash tests the Golf got 5 !!! safety stars. For safety reasons, with this generation Golf began to offer an optional driver's knee airbag. The power plants that were installed on the VW Golf Mk6 became even more environmentally friendly and economical - for example, the Golf BlueMotion II model had an average consumption of 3.8 l / 100 km. Golf six was optionally equipped with many electronic assistants, such as: Light Assist - automatic control of the flow of light near the headlights, ParkAssist - automatic parking assistant, DCC - electronic control of chassis settings, Start / Stop system, as well as taillights with LEDs ...
