At night! They could only identify him by the igniter on the barrel burning like a torch. A hellish chariot pouring red-hot tar on the path for sinners ... God, I died and ended up in chauffeur's hell?

No, this is not yet hell, but only his hallway. We are in Uzbekistan, breaking through the local highway M39 from Shakhrisabz to Samarkand. "Humpbacked", as if surviving an artillery attack, the roads are everywhere in these parts. And in Samarkand the situation is no better: for example, during the day, right on the street in the city center, I almost went underground into a broken sewer as wide as the car itself. It was in such "combat" conditions that our acquaintance with the new budget Chevrolet Cobalt sedan took place. And the place, by the way, was chosen correctly: where else, if not on such "roads", to shake out all the ins and outs of the subject ?!

So in lineup the company's budgetary Cobalt will replace the Lacetti sedan, which is leaving the Chevrolet brand and will return to the market in 2014 under the Daewoo flag. The "Cobalt" itself, presented in 2011, was developed by the Brazilian branch of General Motors both for the "country of wild monkeys" and for other third world powers. That is, those where the buyer is not rich, and the roads are not very good, and the climate is not sugar, and gasoline is not a fountain. A very suitable description for Russia and the CIS, isn't it? But why do we need Cobalt, if there is already an Aveo sedan, which is only 20,000 rubles more expensive at the base price? Chevrolet says they have different buyers. Unlike the foppish city dweller Aveo, Cobalt is aimed at families who need one car, but on business: inexpensive and without show-off, practical, hardy, with high ground clearance, interior and trunk, so that the whole crowd, yes with seedlings, yes bad roads- and to the dacha. Chevrolet's marketers also assure that if appearance is important to the buyer of the Aveo, then, they say, to the owner of the Cobalt, the body design, on the contrary, would be on the side - the price would be good. I don’t know, I don’t know, here I don’t share the optimism of the firm, looking at the big-eyed car. I wonder when the restyling?

The list of safety systems includes only front airbags, there are no side airbags even for an extra charge. The basic equipment includes audio preparation and 4 speakers, the top-end LTZ equipment has a radio tape recorder, but it only reads flash drives and external audio carriers. Not available for the Cobalt and the MyLink multimedia system with touchscreen, which is offered for the Aveo, as well as the cruise control.

But if the appearance of "Cobalt" turned out to be, to put it mildly, controversial, then it has just complete order with the trunk: the "basement" of 545 liters is still the most voluminous in the class, only the future Skoda Rapid(550 l). In addition, the Cobalt is noticeably larger than the Aveo. With the same width, it is 80 mm longer in the body (4479 mm) and 95 mm in the wheelbase (2620 mm). That is, the salon must be large. Check it out?

I sit on a soft sofa, raise the headrest, settle down, look around ... With a height of 180 cm, I sit "behind me" without any problems: the ceiling does not press, it does not "press" in the shoulders, and there is a margin of ten centimeters from the knees to the back. The landing itself is surprisingly high and not piled down, and the sofa has a wide lower cushion that lovingly supports the hips. Three of us sit down? It is also possible, although you will have to make room, and the central tunnel will slightly interfere with the legs of the average passenger.

But the rest of the Cobalt "gallery" was without any special revelations, the indicators here are quite average "for the ward", although, I must confess, I expected more. Let's say, in and even more so in the new, there are other reasons to squabble. On back doors"Cobalt" has wide comfortable armrests, but it is inconvenient to use the door hands and window regulator buttons on them, you have to twist your hand. As a payback for the budget - the absence of a ceiling lamp, cup holders and storage pockets in the rear doors. The "push-out" profile of the back will also take some getting used to, although it does support the lower back. At the same time, you can’t lean back relaxedly on the headrest - you have to bend back, you won’t go for a long time. And the light trim of the seats will obviously be easy to get dirty.

The "Cobalt" instrument scale has a backlight adjustment, which, by the way, is not available for the "brotherly" Aveo. The digital speedometer is very convenient and clear on the go, but the tachometer, on the contrary, is less readable.

Maybe the front Cobalt is more interesting? At first, everything seems to be good. The restrained design of the dashboard dilutes the cheerful "motorcycle" instrument cluster, spied on by the Aveo, from which the gripping steering wheel (but already without the radio buttons and leather) and the steering column "flags" are taken. There are plenty of places for small things: there are cup holders, and pockets in the doors, and "trash heaps" on the dashboard, and the USB connector is hidden in a large niche under the "climate" so that the flash drive does not stick out in plain sight, and there is no need to pull on the panel wires for charging the phone. There are also nice little things like a microlift of the ceiling handles and mirrors in sun visors. The steering wheel may be devoid of adjustment for reach, but the angle of its inclination and the range of seat settings was enough for me to sit down as it should.

But the more closely you delve into the details, the more small "burrs" come out. Why, for example, was the height adjustment of the seat cushion provided with such a tight "twist" that it is not easy to rotate it even with a strong man's hand? It would be better to put the usual pumping lever. And the seat itself seems soft and amorphous, with a squeezed back, lumbar support for which, by the way, is not offered. But the block of buttons for the power windows, in contrast to the same Renault logan or Citroen C-Elysee, in "Cobalt" it is no longer on the dashboard, but on the door. Thank you, of course, but how much Brazilian reais have been saved at Chevrolet by sliding the mirror adjustment joystick into the corner of the window so that you have to reach for it? As for visibility, the mirrors are large, the washer, or rather even the "sprinkler" of the glass is excellent, but when cornering you need to look at both: in wide racks windshield a lot of things can "hide".

In general, if "Cobalt" passed the check in the cabin, then it was a four. Ahead - road "exam". Maybe on it Cobalt will show off talents and especially with its suspension with an independent McPherson scheme in the front and a twisted beam in the back? I will not say that "Cobalt" flashed, but he shook it just pretty much. Chevrolet does not hide the fact that Cobalt for Russia and the CIS has more rigid shock absorbers than the Brazilian version. I believe! Of course, 160 mm of ground clearance and a dense, impenetrable suspension on such broken-down roads are a blessing. My partner slowed down on the pits, while I, on the contrary, resolutely fell ahead on the principle "more speed - fewer pits." And the powerful suspension takes a hit: for almost 300 km of road "trash" we caught a breakdown only once, and already on the streets of Samarkand.

By translating the automatic transmission selector from "parking" to D, it is easy to turn on the manual mode of the box, which is here immediately behind the "drive", and not separately. The "manual" mode itself is honest, the transmission keeps the gear and will not switch "up" even at the maximum engine speed. But the steps in this mode are changed only by buttons on the knob, which feels less convenient than changing gears by swinging the lever itself. In addition, trampling the gas in manual mode is useless: there is no kick-down, the box will not switch "down" without the driver's command and will continue to "vomit" at the selected stage.

But how shaking, as if shuddering with righteous indignation, Cobalt fights against the road mess and sloppiness! Suspension regularly "swallows" road "trifle" and normally fulfills average irregularities. But on large holes and transverse joints, the car already sharply and noisily "gestures", dances on the waves, and on the asphalt "comb" the shock absorbers seem to stop working altogether, turning the car into a galloping vibration stand. So if you are looking for omnivorous comfort in the suspension, like the Logan or the same Almera, then this is not the place for you.

Do not expect revelations from controllability. The steering wheel is well insulated from irregularities, allowing vibrations only on the "large", but its sharpness and information content (or rather, their pale shadow) are such that you no longer drive by the steering wheel's instinct, but "by the eyes." But that was to be expected. But the brakes (disc in front, drum in the back) just would like not so "wadded" and long-stroke. And it doesn't hurt to be more powerful either, because when braking "to the floor" somehow there is no feeling of reinforced concrete confidence in them.

Deceleration is clear, but what about acceleration? For the Brazilian "Cobalt" two gasoline engines (1.4 and 1.8 liters) are offered, but our market has only one 16-valve 1.5-liter Korean S-Tec II engine, which is produced here, at the GM Powertrain plant -Uzbekistan in Tashkent. This motor develops 105 hp. and 134 Nm of thrust, which is less than the 1.6-liter Aveo (115 hp and 155 Nm). But both cars weigh about 1.2 tons and are the same in acceleration to 100, which takes 11.7 seconds with a 6-speed automatic, which Cobalt borrowed from the Aveo, as well as a 5-speed manual.

1. The rear in the Cobalt is clearly more spacious than in the Aveo due to the longer wheelbase. 2. The lower cushion of the sofa does not fold back on the hinges, but is completely removed, but then you have to put it in the fastening grooves so that it does not crawl under the passengers on the go. 3. There are air ducts in the legs of the rear passengers, but because of the high step, the feet under the seat cannot be slipped far.

The engine of the Cobalt turned out to be quiet, and it pulls predictably for its strengths, without bursts and more with the expectation of a quiet ride, so it is better to calculate acceleration in advance, and if you want to joke, then you have to be ready to drive the engine to the tail and mane. Against this background, a 6-speed automatic transmission is a help in fuel economy, on the highway at 100 km / h the engine produces only a little more than 2000 rpm, and in two days of vigorous tests, taking into account the air conditioner, city, highways and serpentines, we managed to "drop" consumption up to 11.1 liters per "hundred". At the same time, there are no sport modes in the box, all settings and unhurried reactions to gas - all this is also aimed at saving. The only pity is the gas tank - only 46 liters.

But no matter how hard Cobalt strives for family values ​​and economy, I somehow did not feel that this car would become a thunderstorm of class B, where every year it is getting closer. Just another "state employee". But Chevrolet wants to sell up to 30,000 Cobalts a year in the future! Due to what, I wonder? Nice dashboard design, large trunk, high ground clearance, stiff yet durable suspension? This alone is not enough, in this segment there are competitors that are prettier, more spacious and more comfortable. What else are you going to take, "Cobalt"?

1. The trunk of the Cobalt, albeit the largest in the class (545 liters), is completely "naked": no pocket, no hook. The opening is wide, but part of the space is eaten by the hinges. 2. The "basement" can only be opened with a key or with a key fob button, which is not very convenient. There is also no stamping under the fingers in the bumper, so that it is more convenient to pry off the frozen cover. 3. The reverse side of the trunk lid is completely "budgetary": the Brazilians have saved even on the internal handles; you will have to close the lid by grasping the slots in the metal. 4. Under the carpet is a full-size 14-inch spare tire.

Chevrolet is still counting on the price. The basic Cobalt in the LT version with manual transmission will cost 444,000 rubles. The price already includes heated front seats and power mirrors, front power windows, driver's airbag, central locking, immobilizer and steel wheel disks with tires 185 / 75R14. For the "condo" you have to pay 26,000 rubles, a security package with ABS and two front airbags will cost 20,000, and another 8,000 rubles will be asked for the metallic color.

The "two-pedal" version will cost 503,000 rubles, and Chevrolet emphasizes that only Cobalt has a 6-speed "automatic" for that kind of money. That's right: only the VW Polo sedan has a similar box in class B, but the price for this version starts at 576,000 rubles. At the same time, the basic "automatic" Cobalt already has an air conditioner. True, ABS and a passenger airbag are not available even for a surcharge. But all this, plus trip computer, rear power windows, a USB radio, an alarm and 15-inch alloy wheels are included in the top-end LTZ configuration - it will cost 530,000 rubles.
