Every driver knows that engine overheating is very bad. It cannot lead to anything good. In order to protect the motor from overheating, cars are equipped with radiator cooling fans. And sometimes he is far from alone.

Today we will talk about a very important element cooling - fan sensor. He is responsible for the timely activation of this cooling device, preventing unwanted overheating.

A bit of theory

Characteristic

Explanation

Location

The sensor is located in the radiator of the stove. It is not difficult to determine that it is he who is in front of you, since in the radiator this is the only element to which the wires are connected. And if you take a key for 30, then only the sensor has the appropriate fastener size.

Response temperature

Sensors can have different temperature limits. But for the VAZ 2114, switching on occurs at 102-105 degrees Celsius, and off at 85-87 degrees. When choosing a new meter, be guided by the one that has failed, or purchase from an on and off indicator of 102 and 87 degrees, respectively

Operating principle

Inside the sensor there is a special contact Group... When the coolant in the radiator heats up, this group heats up and expands. When the expansion reaches a certain limit, the contacts close, they transmit a signal to the wiring and the fan turns on

Reasons for fan breakdown

There are a number of reasons why the fan sensor can eventually fail in addition to the sensor. Therefore, they should first be excluded to make sure that the sensor is to blame.

The reasons for fan failure include:

  1. The fan is out of order. It can wear out, lose its integrity, get mechanical damage. It will be more expensive to replace it when compared to the sensor, but there is no choice.
  2. The chain broke. When checking the sensor, the method of closing its two contacts is usually used. But if the wiring circuit is damaged, this will not be possible, and all the blame due to inexperience will be blamed on the regulator.

If the check with the contacts did not give a result, the fan does not respond, try connecting its contacts directly to the battery.

Sensor check

Plus, be sure to check the new sensor before installing it. This will make sure it works. Today there are a lot of fakes on the market, so there is always a chance to purchase a low-quality fan sensor.

To check, you will need a certain set of tools and materials, which include:

  • Capacity;
  • Water;
  • Coolant;
  • Thermometer;
  • Multimeter.

Let's start checking.

  1. Pour water or regular coolant into the prepared container.
  2. Lower the sensor with the threaded part into it.
  3. Connect the multimeter terminal to the regulator contacts. The measuring device must be in resistance measurement mode. Although if the multimeter has a dial function, then choose it.
  4. Place a thermometer in the liquid.
  5. Heat the water.
  6. When the temperature of the liquid reaches the regulator response temperature (92 degrees Celsius), the contacts should close, and the multimeter will start beeping.
  7. If this does not happen, the sensor really does not work and it needs a replacement.

If you purchased a non-working regulator, be sure to go to the store and claim for a replacement or money back. But only if you have a check. It is better to purchase spare parts in specialized, good stores. The risk of getting fake there is less.

Replacement

On an injection engine, which is literally overflowing with all kinds of sensors, sometimes you need to pay attention to the fan switch. If the check showed that the device is out of order, there is no choice but to carry out the replacement procedure.

The work involves the need for just a few tools and materials:

  • 30 mm box wrench;
  • Container for draining the cooling liquid;
  • Dry rags.

Having prepared everything you need, you can start replacing.

The first priority is to let the engine cool down. Working on a cold engine is more comfortable and safer. If hot coolant comes into contact with the skin, burns cannot be avoided.

  1. For replacement, you do not need a viewing pit or overpass. For such work, these elements are not needed. A simple garage will do.
  2. Disconnect from battery negative terminal.
  3. Drain all coolant from the radiator. Do not drain the coolant from the cylinder block, it is not necessary.
  4. Remove the plug from the coolant expansion tank of your injection engine.
  5. To drain the antifreeze or antifreeze, unscrew the drain plug on the radiator. You will find it at the bottom of the radiator, and you don't need a tool to remove it. The plug can be easily unscrewed by hand.
  6. Place a previously prepared container under the drain hole, where the coolant will drain. Wait for the fluid to stop flowing completely.
  7. If you want the same antifreeze then pour back, take a clean container. If the coolant is old enough and needs to be replaced, then the cleanliness of the container does not matter.
  8. Screw the plug back in.
  9. Disconnect the contacts from the fan sensor.
  10. Using a 30 mm key, unscrew the regulator.
  11. Twist carefully so as not to damage the plastic container of the radiator.
  12. Screw the new regulator back into place. Be sure to insert the copper gasket under the new device.

  1. Replace the fan control wiring.
  2. Pour into expansion tank pre-drained antifreeze or antifreeze.
  3. Purge the system to avoid air congestion inside the system.
  4. Replace the negative battery terminal.
  5. Turn on power unit, warm it up for a while to make sure that the new sensor works.
  6. If, when heated to the desired temperature, the sensor does not work again, you should check the rest of the elements that may be the cause of this behavior of the cooling system.

Replacement without draining the coolant

If you do not want to spend a lot of time replacing the sensor on your VAZ 2114, you can do without the procedure for draining the cooling liquid.

Replacing the fan switch without draining the coolant requires experience and certain skills. Therefore, it is not recommended for a beginner to use this method of repair.

  • Using a 30mm wrench, start unscrewing the old sensor, but not completely.
  • Prepare a new sensor.
  • Unscrew the old regulator with one hand and quickly insert the new one with the other.
  • In this case, a certain part of the antifreeze will flow out, but this is not scary.
  • After replacing, be sure to thoroughly wipe all areas around the regulator with a dry cloth.
  • Check for leaks after installing a new device.

When finished, wipe the vehicle thoroughly so that coolant does not remain on the engine and its components. This is especially true for rubber and plastic elements.

Why the radiator fan on the VAZ 2114 does not turn on

The fan is used to create air currents that are sent to the engine radiator. This is necessary to cool the liquid that circulates through it.

If the car is moving at high speed, the fan is not particularly needed, since the engine receives all the cooling it needs from the oncoming air currents. But when the car goes into slow speed or in standby mode with the engine running, the role of the propeller becomes indispensable.

Required device

Turning on occurs after sending the corresponding signal from the electronic control unit. The computer, in turn, learns about the need to turn on the fan from the temperature sensor. The switching threshold is 103-105 degrees Celsius.

In the case of VAZ 2114, the fan (propeller) is located in the engine compartment under the rear of the radiator.

Why it doesn't work

There are several reasons why the propeller cannot turn on when the temperature indicator situation requires it:

  • The fan motor is defective, i.e. the drive;
  • There was a fuse failure that was burning;
  • Repaired relay;
  • The wiring was broken;
  • Sensor connectors have lost contacts;
  • The sensor is defective.

We found a problem

Troubleshooting area

explanation

Detaches the connector on the propeller and connects directly to the battery. If the fan is running, the drive is working normally. If the propeller still won't twist, the problem is in the motor.

Wiring and contacts

If the propeller is not working, you should check the condition of the wiring and make sure the sensor pins are working properly

You can find these two elements in the engine compartment on the left, closer to the driver inside mounting block... The fan includes a fuse marked F4 with a rated current of 20A. The test can be performed by pressing the beep button. What for? Yes, because it is also associated with this fuse. Or check the tester

It is located in the same place as the fuse. For effective verification, it is best to use relay, in the performance of which you are 100% sure, install it instead of the old one and check

To check the sensor, disconnect power from the sensor. If it works, the propeller will start working in emergency mode, that is, it will blow constantly. Disconnect the connector and turn on the ignition. If the screw turns, then the sensor is broken. Need a replacement

When to change

The radiator fan VAZ 2114 ch1 does not turn on

repair of electrical wiring fan cooling systems VAZ 2114.

VAZ 2114.15 FORCED COOLING FAN DISCONNECTION BY USING A BUTTON AND RELAY

MATERIALS: RELAY 4X PIN (NORMAL ON LIGHT, SIGNAL) PAD UNDER RELAY WITH WIRES, BUTTON.

If the fan itself is the cause of all the problems, there is no need to change it, because in some cases it can be completely repaired. Breakages are often associated with bearings or brushes.

If the cause of the failure is a motor failure due to a broken wire or short circuit, you should not risk repairing it. Easier and better to replace the entire disc.

Check for open circuit

Driving a vehicle that does not have a cooling propeller will overheat the coolant and destroy the injectors, rubber elements, the main cylinder block gasket, and the valve cover. Nearby and before components are destroyed piston group.

fuse

Driving with a broken fan is strictly prohibited.

Issue price

Before solving the problem with a radiator that is not working, it is important for many to know the cost of the components and the work.

The new element will cost about 1.5-2.5 thousand rubles today, depending on the model and region. Station replacement cost Maintenance will be from 400 rubles or more. Although you don't need to spend money on this, since self replacement will take no more than half an hour. And there is nothing particularly difficult here.

temperature sensor

replacement

To replace a fan fan yourself, you need a fairly small set of tools, which include:

  • Crosshead screwdriver;
  • 8mm hexagon wrench;
  • Socket wrench 10 millimeters.

If you're ready, then we'll get started.

  1. Place the car on a level platform, turn on hand brake... Just in case, you can put additional supports under the wheels of your VAZ 2114. Precautions never get in the way.
  2. Raise the hood, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
  3. With a 10mm wrench, body fasteners air filter dismantled.
  4. Equipped with a screwdriver, loosen the clamp from the channel located on the MAF sensor. This way you can remove the corrugation. Do it.
  5. The air filter housing cover has self-tapping screws to hold it in place. They are unscrewed with a screwdriver, after which the filter component is removed from its seat.
  6. Take an 8mm wrench and use it to remove the air intake fittings, then remove the air intake.
  7. Now, with a 10mm and 8mm wrench, the retaining nuts on the fan shroud are removed around the entire perimeter. There you will find 6 nuts in total.
  8. Disconnect the connector from the wire from the connector of your broken fan.
  9. Remove the fan hood by grasping the drive, i.e. the electric motor.
  10. Armed with a 10mm wrench, you need to remove the three mounting bolts holding the motor to the housing.
  11. Install a new fan to replace the old device.
  12. We return all fasteners to their places, connect the connectors, perform the assembly in the reverse order.

After installing new equipment, be sure to turn on the engine and let it run for a while. Until the fan turns on and the propeller does not rotate. It will take no more than 5 minutes. Soon the fan itself should be turned off. If it does not stop, turn off the engine. Repeat the experiment.

It rarely happens that after replacement the fan is still not working. Even if this happened, it is associated with two possible events. other components of the cooling system have been damaged, or you have purchased an inoperative fan. Alas, given the number of counterfeits on the market, you cannot rule out the second option.

If the owner of the VAZ-2114 wishes, it can be equipped with an air conditioner that makes everyone feel comfortable on these hot summer days in the cabin of this passenger car... Then, when the air conditioner is turned on, the fan of the engine cooling system must also turn on, regardless of what temperature the coolant will have. Because that's how it works electrical circuit inclusion, in the presence of an air conditioner.

But, on those VAZ-2114 cars where there is no air conditioning, the fan of the engine cooling system should work when the antifreeze heats up to a temperature of 101 degrees. If the fan motor turns on and starts working even on an unheated engine, then the driver will need to solve this problem.

At the beginning, you need to check the integrity of the insulation of the wires going to the coolant temperature sensor (DTOZH), which is located in the cylinder head, on its inlet pipe. If, for some reason, they began to short to ground, then the fan must turn on, since this false signal tells the controller that the temperature of the antifreeze in the engine cooling system has risen to 130 degrees. Since the controller does not know that this signal is false, it naturally turns the fan into operation.

The second reason for the constantly working VAZ-2114 fan may be associated with a "glitch" of the controller, which turns it on according to the control signal of the coolant sensor, and after the antifreeze temperature drops, as a result of the fan operation, it does not want to turn it off. This may be due to controller firmware.

The voltage to the terminals of the electric motor of the engine cooling system fan is supplied through the contacts of the relay, which is located in the additional relay and fuse box located at the feet of the front passenger behind the side cover that covers the front console .. If the contacts of this relay are stuck, the fan will turn on and work immediately after turning the key in the ignition lock.

If the fan does not turn on immediately, but only after the engine has warmed up and then does not turn off, then the reason for its such operation may be associated with low level antifreeze in the engine cooling system or with a malfunction of the thermostat, which refuses to open its valve to circulate fluid in a large circle (through the radiator). It is quite easy to check this. Open the hood and on a cold engine you need to check the coolant level. If it is normal, start the engine, let it warm up to operating temperature and feel the radiator inlet hose with your hand.

All the main wiring diagrams and modifications of the connection of the cooling fan (VO) of the liquid in VAZ cars of various models are given. What is the essence of VO work? Electrical engine with an impeller on the shaft, it is installed inside a rectangular metal frame, with which it is attached to the back of the radiator. When voltage (12 V) is applied to the drive contacts, it starts to work, rotating the blades and creating a directed air stream, which, in fact, cools the antifreeze or antifreeze.

If the cooling fan does not work, do not rush to contact a car service. You can also determine the cause of the malfunction yourself. Moreover, for this it is not at all necessary to have special skills - just study the reference material from site and follow the instructions to check / replace it.

Until 1998, on cars with the old fuse box 17.3722 (finger fuses), relay 113.3747 was included in the fan circuit. There is no such relay after 1998.

Also, until 1998, the TM-108 switch-on sensor was used (the closing temperature of its contacts is 99 ± 3 ° C, the opening temperature is 94 ± 3 ° C), after 1998 TM-108-10 with similar temperature ranges or its counterparts from different manufacturers. The TM-108 sensor works only in tandem with a relay, reinforced for high current TM-108-10 can work with or without a relay.

Where is the fan relay

4 - electric fan relay;
5 - electric fuel pump relay;
6 - main relay (ignition relay).

Attention: the order of relays and fuses can be arbitrary, we are guided by the color of the wires. Therefore, we find a relay from which a thin pink wire with a black stripe extends from the main relay (pin 85 *) (not to be confused with a thin red wire with a black stripe coming from the controller) and a thick white power wire with a black stripe (pin 87) (white and pink wires we need), this is the fan relay.

If the cooling fan is not working

An electric motor is installed to drive the fan direct current with excitation from permanent magnets ME-272 or similar. Technical data of the electric fan and the sensor for switching on the fan:

  • Rated speed of the shaft of the electric motor with the impeller, 2500 - 2800 rpm.
  • Power consumption of the electric motor, 14 A
  • The temperature of the sensor contacts closure, 82 ± 2 degrees.
  • Opening temperature of the sensor contacts, 87 ± 2 degrees.

The cooling fan may not turn on due to:

  • malfunctions of the electric drive;
  • blown fuse;
  • faulty thermostat;
  • a failed temperature sensor for turning on the cooler;
  • faulty VO relay;
  • breakage of electrical wiring;
  • faulty expansion tank plug.

To check the VAZ fan motor itself, we apply a 12 V voltage from the battery to its terminals - a working motor will start working. If the problem is with the fan, you can try to repair it. The problem usually lies in the brushes or bearings. But it happens that the electric motor fails due to a short circuit or an open in the windings. In such cases, it is best to replace the entire drive.

The VO fuse is located in the mounting block of the car's engine compartment and is designated F7 (20 A). The test is performed using a vehicle tester, included in the probe mode.

  1. In a car with a carburetor engine it is necessary to check the sensor - turn on the ignition and short-circuit the two wires going to the sensor. The fan should turn on. If it doesn't, the problem is definitely not the sensor.
  2. For injection cars it is necessary to warm up the motor to operating temperature, and disconnect the sensor connector by disconnecting it from on-board network cars. In this case, the controller must start the fan in emergency mode. The electronic unit perceives this as a failure in the cooling system, and forces the fan drive to run continuously. If the drive starts, the sensor is faulty.

Replacing the electric fan in the car

  1. We put the car on a flat surface, immobilize it with the parking brake.
  2. We open the hood, turn off the negative terminal.
  3. Using a 10 key, unscrew the fasteners of the air filter housing.
  4. Use a screwdriver to loosen the air duct clamp on the air flow sensor and remove the corrugation.
  5. We unscrew the self-tapping screws securing the cover of the air filter housing, remove the filter element.
  6. Using the 8 key, unscrew the air intake mount and dismantle it.
  7. Using a key for 10, then for 8, unscrew the nuts securing the fan casing around the perimeter (6 pieces in total).
  8. Disconnect the wiring block on the fan connector.
  9. Carefully remove the fan casing together with the drive.
  10. Using a 10 key, unscrew the 3 bolts holding the electric motor on the casing.
  11. We put a new one in its place.
  12. We put the structure in place, fix it, connect the connector.
  13. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order.

Modernization of the control scheme

The cooling fan turns on at a dozen at a temperature of 100-105 ° C, while normal operating
the temperature of the engine is 85-90 ° C, the fan turns on when the engine overheats, which naturally has a negative effect.

This problem can be solved in two ways: adjust the switch-on temperature in the "brains" or make a button. We will focus on the second. Turning on the fan from the button is very convenient: got into a jam - turned it on, left - turned it off, and nobody overheats.

A button for selecting the fan operating mode was installed in the cabin (permanently off, on all the time, automatic activation by means of a sensor) - this "tuning" is not necessary, but it will be a very useful addition.

There will be a large current on the relay contacts 87, 30, on the wire from the battery to the fuse and the fan mass, and therefore we must use wires with a cross section of at least 2 mm, otherwise the thinner wire will not withstand and burn.
