In 2001, the American automobile concern General Motors bought out a controlling stake in the passenger car manufacturing division of the bankrupt South Korean company Daewoo Group. After the rebranding, Daewoo Matiz was supplied to the markets under the Chevrolet Matiz and Pontiac Matiz G2 brands, and since 2005 as the Chevrolet Spark.

In 2005, the car underwent a second global restyling. Changes affected the appearance of the Chevrolet Matiz, interior trim, and improved main technical characteristics.
