The first public display of the Mercedes S-Class W220 took place in 1998 at the Paris Motor Show. A year later, the S320 CDI model and the flagship version of the S600 were presented, and a year later - the S400 CDI. In the fall of 2002, the car underwent a slight facelift. The sedan received slightly modified taillights and new headlights with clear lenses. The last W220 left the factory in 2006. The limousine was going to Germany and Indonesia.

Exterior

Compared to its predecessor, the design has undergone a real revolution. Mercedes S-class looks more elegant, and the headlights have acquired the original configuration. Despite the less massive aerodynamic forms, the German sedan still looked very presentable, especially in the black body color.

Interior

A lot has changed in the interior as well. Here, the connection with the style of other Mercedes models was completely broken. The S-Class was supposed to be unique and different from the cheaper E and C-class. It was the only car in the German automaker's range to feature a distinctive steering wheel, center console, door panels and seats. Interestingly, the steering wheel, with buttons for phone and audio controls, was subsequently exported to Maybach, which draws on the design of the S-class.

Equipment

We can talk about the equipment for a long time. The predecessor W140 raised the bar very high in the field of electronic equipment. The W220 had no choice but to go further in this direction.

Anyone who decides to buy a luxury German sedan should know that this car never came with a complete set. The list of basic equipment depended entirely on the powertrain under the hood, and everything else was available at an additional cost. So theoretically, if you want to buy an S-class in the most complete equipment, you need to choose among the flagship engines. However, in practice, even the 320 CDI can be equipped with the Keyless Go system.

Active ventilated seats with massage function always keep the driver in an optimal position during fast cornering. The seats work in cooperation with the Pre-Sef system, a preventive safety system created by Mercedes for this particular model. If the system detects a risk of collision, the driver's and passenger's seats are instantly adjusted to the optimum position, the sunroof is locked, and the seat belts slightly pull the driver and passengers. Thanks to this preparation, all safety systems, including 8 airbags, provide the greatest degree of protection in a collision. It is noteworthy that the S-Class did not take part in the EuroNCAP crash tests.

Among the electronic devices, mention should be made of the electric seat drive, the refrigerator, the Command navigation system, which, after restyling in 2003, received a wide-angle screen, Linguatronic voice control, xenon headlights, and later bi-xenon headlights, a door closer, an electric boot lid and Distronic active cruise control that maintains a distance from the vehicle in front.

Engines

Gasoline:

  • 2.8 V6 (204 HP) S280;
  • 3.2 V6 (224 hp) S320;
  • 3.7 V6 (245 hp) S350;
  • 4.3 V8 (279 hp) S430;
  • 5.0 V8 (306 hp) S500;
  • 5.4 V8 (360-500 hp) S55 AMG;
  • 5.5 BiTurbo V8 (500 hp) S600;
  • 6.0 V12 (367 hp) S600;
  • 6.0 BiTurbo V12 (612 hp) AMG S65;
  • 6.3 V12 (444 hp) AMG S63.

Diesel:

  • 3.2 R6 (197-204 hp) S320 CDI;
  • 4.0 V8 BiTurbo (250/260 HP) S400 CDI.

Under the hood of the Mercedes S-Class W220, 6, 8 and 12-cylinder engines were installed. Among the gasoline units, the weakest is the 204-horsepower V6 inherited by the S280. There were two more V6s to choose from: S320 and S350. There were also two V8s in the lineup: the weaker S430 develops 279 hp, and the stronger S500 already 306 hp. The latter accelerates the massive sedan to 100 km / h in 6.5 seconds. If this is too little for someone, then you can always choose the S600, the power unit of which has a return of 367 hp. Later, he began to develop 500 hp.

Diesel units are the most widespread in Europe. The weakest of these is the 320 CDI with 197 hp, followed by 204 hp. The most powerful 400 CDI with two turbochargers can provide 250 or 260 hp. With a V8 turbo diesel, the S400 CDI accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km / h. The declared average fuel consumption is 9.6 liters per 100 km.

For AMG fans, the S55 model (360 and 500 hp), the S63 (444 hp), as well as the top version of the S65 (612 hp), which can accelerate to 100 km / h in 4 , 2 seconds, and after removing the restriction, it easily steps over the 300 km / h mark.

The lowest operating costs are required by 6-cylinder gasoline engines. They provide the best compromise between fuel consumption and reliability. Most of all emotions, of course, are given by the most powerful units from the court tuning studio AMG. But this is the choice of those who are not afraid of a consumption of 20 l / 100 km. In general, operating costs are proportional to the size of the engine. The most common problems with gasoline units are failing ignition coils.

Diesel lovers are faced with malfunctions in the injection system (injectors). One of the weak points is the turbine, and there are two of them in the V8 (ОМ628), which increases the cost of repairs. Another curse of diesel engines is the stretching of the timing chain. To replace it, it is necessary to remove the engine, and this is an additional cost that should be expected after 200,000 km. Weaker options are less troublesome. In the S320 CDI version, the intake manifold flaps fail.

There are also throttle valve malfunctions and cases of clogged EGR valve. Often the crankshaft oil seal leaks. Sometimes it is necessary to replace the catalyst and lambda probe. Malfunctions in the engine control unit are not excluded.

Transmission

None of the engines were available with a manual transmission, only a 5 or 7 speed automatic. The S-Class W220 is not a very reliable car, and the transmission is one of the limousine's weak points. The Mercedes was also available with the 4Matic all-wheel drive system, which significantly improves stability and handling.

The high torque of the powerful engines, especially the 560 Nm of the S400 CDI, causes serious damage to the automatic transmission. Often, problems arose after 50,000 km. Trouble can be avoided by observing a simple rule - never press the gas all the way until the car starts to move. The cost of repairing the box is about $ 2,500. First of all, all that has been said applies to the 5-speed automatic transmission.

There are oil leaks from the rear differential.

Clicks when the load changes indicate wear of the universal joint damper.

Suspension

Both at the rear and at the front, the S-Class has a multi-link suspension with Airmatic pneumatic elements. In some instances, there is also an Active Body Control system, which itself adjusts the characteristics of the suspension depending on driving conditions.

The air suspension is the most problematic. The compressor fails and the system leaks. A suspiciously low ground clearance and too reluctant raising after starting the engine will tell you about problems with the Airmatic. The compressor is located on the right-hand side behind the bumper. Its work can be checked by turning on the ignition - it should work. Suspension repair costs can be around $ 1,500. The most common predictor of expenses is the message "TOO LOW" on the on-board computer screen.

Avoid instances with optional Active Body Control - pump and hydraulic shock absorbers often break. Although the system fails less often than the air suspension, it is more expensive to repair.

Problems with pneumatics are often associated with depressurization of the junction of the air supply line and the pneumatic cylinder.

Typical malfunctions

Before buying, you should pay close attention to body parts, which are often affected by rust. Corrosion occurs most often on the lower edges of the doors and in the area of the wheel arches. "Red plague" is characteristic of cars assembled before 2003.

There are also cases of failure of the power steering pump, as evidenced by the excessive resistance that appears during steering wheel rotation.

Advanced electronics are also troublesome. All kinds of sensors fail. I'm having problems with my navigation system and my CD player. The Command screen goes blank due to hardware failures. Parking sensors fail at low temperatures. ESP sensors and alternator may fail.

Alternator malfunctions are more common in cars manufactured before 2003.

Some owners complain about temperature fluctuations or random changes in the supply fan speed. Calibration of dampers required.

These are just some of the traps that await the owners of the S-Class.

Tie rods wear out relatively quickly.

Conclusion

With the arrival of the W220, it quickly became clear that the era of invulnerable and reliable Mercedes was over. Therefore, when choosing a W220, you should not pay attention to the cheapest offers. In such instances, the following are guaranteed: terrible condition, overhaul of the engine or attachments, comprehensive repair of electrical wiring and suspension. Ultimately, the amount spent on restoring the limousine will exceed the cost of the car itself.

It is much better to choose samples that are fresh from the last years of release. Despite the unflattering reviews about the car, it comes at a price. Nevertheless, before buying, you should think carefully: can you really afford repairs, which sometimes exceed the amount of 2-3 thousand dollars.

However, the Mercedes S-Class is not only about high operating costs, but also about comfort, luxury and engine power.

In 1998, Mercedes-Benz decided to discontinue production of the legendary, which was replaced by a new model - S-Class W220. The official presentation of the novelty took place in August, and in October the model was launched into series.

The dimensions of the Mercedes W220 sedan are: 5,042 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width and 1,453 mm in height. The wheelbase of the car is 2 864. There is also an extended version of the model, where the length reaches 5 164 mm and the wheelbase is 3 086 millimeters. Unlike its predecessor, the W220 sedan is noticeably shorter and weighs almost 300 kg lighter. Thus, the curb weight of the car varies from 1,750 (S 320) to 1,935 (S 600) kg.

If the cars of the "one hundred and fortieth" family were produced both in the sedan and coupe bodies (although the bulk of the cars produced are sedans), then the Mercedes W220 is presented on the market exclusively in the sedan body. This is due to the fact that in 1996 the manufacturer allocated a separate designation CL-Class for the coupe.

The fourth generation Mercedes S-Class W220 differs from its predecessor both in terms of design and technology. Visually, the car retained the W140 signature features, but the body lines became smoother and more rounded. Thanks to this, the exterior of the sedan turned out to be more elegant.

Interestingly, if the flagship W140 models were equipped exclusively with gasoline engines, and diesels were considered the "weak link", then in the case of the Mercedes W220 the situation is different.

Thanks to the innovative Common Rail technology, which contributes to significant fuel savings, German specialists have managed to significantly popularize cars with diesel engines. So, one of the most popular modifications of this model is the S320 CDI with a 3.2-liter (194 hp) and S400 CDI with a 4.0-liter turbodiesel (247 hp).

The range of gasoline engines is represented by a much larger number of power units. So, the starting model S320 is equipped with a 3.2-liter V6, developing 221 hp. Cars for the Asian market are equipped with a 2.8-liter V6 engine with 194 hp.

Eight-cylinder petrol engines are used in the mid-range S430 and S500 models. The first is driven by a 4.2-liter unit with a capacity of 275 hp, and the "heart" of the second is a 5.0-liter engine with a capacity of 302 hp. The top version of the W220 S600 model has the most powerful 5.8-liter V12 engine, developing 362 hp.

Compared to the W140, the line of modifications of the Mercedes S-class W220 has lost a little in power, but has noticeably increased in efficiency. However, the bet on economy played a cruel joke with the German company, and Mercedes-Benz almost lost the market for luxury executive cars.

To rectify the situation in 2002, the "two hundred and twentieth" was modernized. The car received an updated design, an improved set of electronics and a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. However, the main innovation was new, more powerful engines. For example, the top-end Mercedes S600 W220 received a 493-horsepower V12 engine with a working volume of 5.5 liters.

The maximum speed of most versions of the W220 is electronically limited at around 250 km / h, but the acceleration to hundreds is different for all modifications. While the S320 breaks the 100 km / h mark in 8.2 seconds, the flagship S600 takes just 6.3 seconds.

In terms of technical equipment, the German sedan significantly surpassed its predecessor. All versions of the Mercedes-Benz S W220 are equipped with a computer stabilization system and Brake Assist. After the update, the cars also received PRE-SAFE technology, which, in the event of a collision or loss of control, tightens the seat belts, changes the position of the seats, and also closes the windows and sunroof.

In addition, the 220 was the first Mercedes model with Airmatic air suspension, the key feature of which is the ability to choose between fixed suspension settings. The car also has a Distronic cruise control system. Thanks to the latter, the sedan "learned" to maintain a certain distance to the vehicle in front.

Mercedes-Bens S-class W220 was produced until July 2005. During this time, 485 thousand cars rolled off the assembly line. Shortly after the termination of production of the 220th, the German company introduced a successor to the model -. Today, you can buy a supported "two hundred and twentieth" at an average price of 250,000 to 1,500,000 rubles, depending on the year of manufacture, modification, configuration and general condition.

Mercedes S Klasse W220

The debut of the fourth generation Mercedes-Benz S-class with the factory designation W220 took place in 1998, compared to its predecessor, the steel car is slightly smaller, but noticeably more technologically advanced. Since 2003, the 4Matic all-wheel drive transmission has been installed on the sedan, and the manual transmission, on the contrary, has been excluded from the equipment list.

The production of the model was carried out until 2005, and the total circulation was 485 thousand units.

The "fourth" Mercedes-Benz S-class is a four-door executive sedan, available in short and long wheelbase versions. Vehicle length - from 5042 to 5164 mm, height - 1453 mm, width - 1855 mm, wheelbase - from 2864 to 3086 mm. The curb weight of the "German" varies from 1770 to 1855 kg, depending on the modification.

Under the hood of the Mercedes-Benz W220, V-shaped "six" with a volume of 2.8 to 3.8 liters were installed, producing from 197 to 245 horsepower. The V8 engines had a volume of 4.3 and 5.0 liters, and the power of 279 and 306 "horses", respectively. The top-of-the-line S 600 was powered by a 5.8-liter V12 twin turbocharged engine with 500 hp output. There were also turbodiesels with a volume of 3.2 and 4.0 liters with a capacity of 197 to 250 horsepower.

In addition, the "special class" lineup was supplemented with "charged" AMG versions, which sported engines producing from 360 to 612 "horses". Two gearboxes were offered - 5- or 7-band "automatic", rear-wheel drive or full 4Matic.

The fourth generation Mercedes-Benz S-class sedan was the first of the models to get Airmatic air suspension, which has fixed settings for different driving styles by changing the pressure in the shock absorbers. Brakes on all wheels are disc, front - ventilated.

The "fourth" S-class had a number of features, one of which can be called a lot of different electronic systems. Among them are air suspension, a radar cruise control system, a computer stabilization system, a driver assistance system during hard braking, a proprietary 4Matic all-wheel drive and much more.

He was not a hero of jokes, but he managed to be noted in women's literature as an object of desire and appeared in a bunch of films. The company actively used product placement to promote the car to the masses. The massive rock-like ancestor in the face of the W140 was phenomenally prestigious, but not everyone wanted to own one. The new car was made a little smaller, a little lighter and much sleeker.

The approach justified itself, the largest "merc" flew like hot cakes in the States, where in the end they sold almost half of the total circulation of the car - 188 thousand out of 460. Of course, the owner had already driven such a car, and did not look like a hired driver of a successful person. The company realized that it was impossible to make the car too prestigious, and did not repeat any more mistakes. For those who needed a different image, we decided to revive the Maybach brand. In addition to a less massive design, less weight and a complete rejection of manual transmissions, the car is remembered for a few more points. First, the massive air suspension, which made the car both comfortable and pleasant to drive. Secondly, the unprecedented complication of the level of electrical equipment of the body and closely related to this factor the cost of maintenance, which has increased several times. And also an extremely unsuccessful body painting. This was the first time a car of this class had problems with reliability and corrosion.

This is not to say that the car received an unsuccessful status. Nobody can say that about a top-end Mercedes. But definitely the car turned out to be "topical", and not "timeless", like its other ancestors - not only the W140, but also earlier -, and.

Another important feature of the two hundred and twentieth body was the appearance of all-wheel drive on the top sedan - before that, the option was available only for the E-class and SUVs. By the beginning of the 21st century, it turned out that all driving wheels were in demand not only by "jeepers" - they were to the liking of both "athletes" and those who operate a car in the north, in the mountains, or simply sometimes tow trailers (yes, in the States it is quite relevant for the S-class).

Pay attention to the special demand for vehicles with regular booking - no other vehicle on the secondary market is presented so widely in an armored version. And the booking here is factory-made, which means that the cars retain acceptable running characteristics and resource.

Armored Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse Guard

Breakdowns and problems in operation

Chassis

Technically, the car does not stand out too much from a number of other Mercedes models. The design is classic in almost everything, with time-tested solutions on hundreds of thousands of machines. Double wishbone in front, almost like a multi-link in the back. A serious difference from its predecessors and "curse", as I said, was the air suspension. Its additional elements, compressor, pipelines and the racks themselves turned out to be a very expensive "consumable", which, moreover, did not like dirty roads very much.

The reliability of very expensive air bellows was acceptable only when operating in a dry and clean climate, but in Europe, and even more so in Russia, the resource of a part was only a few years. Additional precautions, such as regular cleaning of the suspension, lubrication of the cylinder with special compounds and installation of casings, could extend the service life to five to six years, which is not bad, but still the chances of seeing the car lying on its belly in the morning turned out to be high.

The cost of components is traditionally high - a compressor costs "only" 23 thousand rubles, but the price of a strut air spring starts from 80-120 thousand, and the price tag with a shock absorber is all 300. Yes, if you carefully look at the tables, this is more than some cost. the whole machine.

There are substitutes, but they are limitedly available, and the price still “bites” - two cylinders cost no less than 60 thousand rubles, and of acceptable quality - already closer to a hundred. The main consumable for slightly "current" racks is the compressor, which has to be changed frequently. Many machines are operated for years on half-killed racks, planting batteries and killing a couple of compressors a year.

Otherwise, the suspensions do not have any significant differences from the same E-class in terms of resource, unless you buy an armored car - there the suspension resource will be extremely small, and the price of some components is many times higher. By the way, if you suddenly have a Maybach, then some of the elements of the W140 and armored W220 suspensions are suitable for it, and the price gain for the bulkhead of the suspension of one axle will be ... about a million and a half. But even millionaires are not alien to life hacks.

Body and interior

It would seem that the company has never produced frankly bad cars that would rot like a Zhiguli during perestroika. But at the turn of the century, there was a puncture. At first, it turned out to be not too corrosion-resistant, but overall its quality was acceptable. And now, the newest W220, the face of the brand, and suddenly ... In the third or fourth year of operation, the paintwork of the car loses its shine, the paint peels off, and rust creeps out from under it. This was a serious blow to the image, especially since the company did not have time to do anything with the painting process on the very running C-class W203, which was released in 2000, and its problem also affected.

This was fixed only in 2002-2003, when the painting technology was improved and the cars stopped rusting at an astonishing rate. In most of the United States, the problem did not manifest itself acutely - moreover, American cars often did just fine without enhanced anti-corrosion treatment, which manifests itself especially badly after bringing such a machine to Russia. "Americans" of the early years are strongly recommended to bypass the side for a kilometer, unless, of course, you are not going to just put the car in the garage and admire it.

The low price of most of the copies on the "secondary housing" speaks precisely of the problems with corrosion that have begun, and hence the loss of prestige. Fortunately, the power structure of the body is protected quite well, the side members do not fall off the cars and the floor does not fall, but for another ten years and ... I'm afraid it will be much more by that time.

But the interior is really good, especially on European cars with good trim levels. The design change had a positive effect on the interior comfort, besides, the interior became much more functional and safe. And it is made of high quality - even a driver's seat with a mileage of two hundred thousand kilometers can look great, unless there is perforated leather with ventilation, such a coating serves much less.

But the wear of the steering wheel cover does not mean record runs. If the interior is made of light leather, then the steering wheel will be in scuffs after one hundred thousand run, and the problem is especially pronounced if a woman with rings on her hands and long claws drives the car.

Otherwise, there is something to break down, but these are not prohibitive costs. The electrical system as a whole is not particularly stable, digital data transmission buses and block with SAM-modules are used here, the front and rear modules communicate with each other via an optical line. As well as on, problems due to unsuccessful lighting, disconnecting batteries on the go, short circuits can be extremely expensive. However, the average repair price is now relatively low and is in the range of 5-10 thousand rubles. The main thing is to prevent blocks from flooding with water and burning out contacts and boards.

Motors

Interestingly, against the background of other problems, the motors are ideally reliable here. About the M112 and M113 series engines, these V6 and V8 make up the bulk of the S-Class engines. They are very reliable, well-repaired, and have a large and predictable resource.

Diesel engines of the OM613 and OM648 series are also devoid of any serious problems. But the top-end turbodiesel V8 OM628 is strongly discouraged for purchase. Its problems begin with the current injectors and fuel injection pump failures, which leads to cracking of the cylinder head and pistons. Microcracks lead to increased pressure of crankcase gases, and this serves as the main indicator of the need for overhaul.

The top V12 gasoline engines are represented by two variants of the M137 engine, which in design resembles two M112s connected together - the same block head architecture and general layout. The only major difference is the half-cylinder shutdown system at partial load, which reduces fuel consumption to the level of models with a V8. The resource of an initially too long-stroke engine is less than that of a V8, and even the problems of overheating of such a complex design are very common, but in general it is a motor with good reliability. All its problems are caused by the fact that it fits very badly into the engine compartment - it is too big for the W220.

As usual, the main enemy of all motors is overheating, and also various leaks and sensor failures, failure of catalysts with frequent misfiring, etc. But on most cars, motors still have a good resource margin. The cars were mostly taken care of, and the old engines do well for prolonged idling.

Transmission

There are no surprises here either - transmissions are traditionally reliable, including on all-wheel drive versions. Unless the cost of front-wheel drive units in the secondary market is very high: roads and drives, and a gearbox, but they are also not easy to break.

Automatic transmissions here are mainly of the 722.6 series, which has already been discussed a lot earlier, because it was also installed on , and on , and on. The bulk of cars produced after 2001 is devoid of most of the "childhood diseases" and with runs up to 250 thousand kilometers, there will be no special resource problems.

Mercedes in the two hundred and twentieth body was presented at the very end of 1998 at the Paris Motor Show. The S-class W220 replaced the previous model with the W140 body index. Interestingly, in comparison with, the new car did not increase, but decreased in size, the length decreased by 120mm - this angered the fans of the brand. It is worth noting that after the debut of the sharp demand model did not follow, a good-steady demand from the client appeared in 2001. Over seven years of production, 485,000 executive sedans were assembled, and in 2005 production was stopped. In 2001, a twelve-cylinder version was presented, which received the nickname "six hundred", the popular name of the car is due to the engine volume of 6 liters. Given the year of its debut, the flagship Mercedes had to compete first with the first generation and then with the second, the same is true of the Bavarian flagship models E38 and the E65 that appeared in 2001.

Appearance:

Unlike the previous generation, there was no coupe among the C-class bodies, because since 1996, coupes have been produced as a separate class - CL. The buyer could choose a sedan with a regular and extended base. The longer version, denoted with the letter L, was 120mm longer. Already in the basic configuration, there is xenon optics, and b-xenon was also offered as additional equipment. In 2002, a restyling was carried out, the updated Mercedes is easiest to recognize by the thin, transparent stripes on the taillights. Standard cars were put on 225/60 R16 tires.

Salon:

As an optional equipment for Mercedes, an Elcode key card was offered, which made it possible to get into the salon without pressing the alarm key fob, while the engine was started without a key. The seats and the steering wheel of the Mercedes are equipped with memory, as soon as the driver inserted the key into the ignition switch (in the base there is a traditional key), the steering wheel takes the last programmed position, and when muffling it moves closer to the panel to facilitate disembarkation from behind the wheel. The steering wheel itself is adjusted using servo drives. There is a special button under the driver's seat - Dynamic, this function pumps up the lateral support rollers in sharp turns - when better retention of the driver's body is required. The keys for the electric drive of the chair, according to Mercedes, are made in the form of an armchair and are located on the door card. There is already heating in the database, but on many used cars there are chairs with ventilation and massage functions. Climate control and cruise control Distronic, which is able to keep the distance to the car driving in front, is included in the package of the most basic W220. The integrated Pre Safe system works for safety, which in the event of an inevitable collision or rollover tightens the seat belts, sets all the seats to the optimal position and closes the sunroof with windows. On the center console there is a triangular hazard warning button, which was previously installed on many sedans of the brand (W140, W124 and others). To the right of the emergency button there is a central locking button, parking sensors shutdown and a rear curtain servo button. To the left of the emergency gang triangle, there is a button for reclining the headrests of the rear sofa. Comfort in the cabin is also ensured by special heat-retaining glasses, which also protect passengers from ultraviolet radiation. According to the brand's tradition, the parking brake is operated with a scissor. As an option for the Mercedes in the two hundred and twentieth body, a door and trunk lid "closer" is offered - this is a premium option that speaks of a high class of the car.

The back seat is also equipped with electric drives and all possible options provided for those sitting in front (massage and ventilation). Sitting in the back seat of the Long version can easily swing one leg over the other. Mercedes' luggage compartment holds 500 liters and a full spare wheel.

Technical part and characteristics of Mercedes S-class W220

Mercedes s-class W220 became the first model of the brand on which the Airmatic air suspension was already installed in the base, which is able to change the degree of comfort of the chassis, as well as the height of the ground clearance. Upon reaching a speed of 140 kilometers per hour, the car "squats" by 15mm, which gives more stability. Note that cars for the USA do not squat by 15mm, but only by 5mm. At an additional cost, the Active Body Control suspension was offered, which proved to be more reliable than the Airmatic. Active Body Control was installed by default only on the top-end modification - S600. The ESP (exchange rate stability system) and Brake Assist systems (a system that recognizes a sharp, but weak pressure on the gas pedal and increases the effectiveness of the brakes by raising the pressure in the circuit) are available on the most basic modifications. In 2002, the 4 Matic all-wheel drive system appeared, so the W220 became the first executive-class Mercedes with all-wheel drive. According to experts, the two hundred and twentieth four-wheel drive brings no more problems and costs than a rear-wheel drive car.

The least powerful gasoline version of the Mercedes C-class was the S280 model with an M112 engine with 204hp and 270NM. Demand for the S280 was so small that the model was soon discontinued. It is quite difficult to come across a used S280 today. The S320 was produced from 1998 to 2002, the 3.2l V6 engine develops 224hp and 315NM of torque. In 2002, the S320 gave way to the S350 with a 3.7L and 245HP engine.

It so happened that executive sedans with eight cylinders under the hood are in great respect. The S430 with V8 produces 279hp and 400NM of thrust - this allows you to dial the first hundred in 7.5s, the maximum speed is electronically limited to 250km. The S500 hides an M113 series V8 engine with 306hp and 460Nm of torque under the hood. The 500th accelerates to the first hundred in 6.5 seconds. The most prestigious S600, with a volume of 5786 cubes, develops 367 horses and 530 N.M, but after the modernization of 2002, the six hundredth received two turbines, the power increased to 500hp.

In 1999, the S55AMG appeared with a V8 engine for 360 forces, the assembly was carried out by hand, the sedan from AMG differs in a stiffer suspension. In 2002, the S63AMG entered the scene, and in 2004 it was replaced by the S65AMG with a boost pressure of 1.5 bar, the M275 engine produces 612 hp and 1200 N. M of torque - this allows you to gain one hundred kilometers in 4.4 seconds after the start.

Diesel executive-class sedans do not enjoy significant success in the CIS, but such cars were often chosen by Europeans. Diesel OM613 with a volume of 3.2 liters produces 197 hp (204 after 2002), and the more powerful OM628 4.0 liters for 250 hp and 660 N. M at the time of its appearance in 2000 was even the most powerful light diesel engine in the world. Diesels do not digest domestic fuel very well, which leads to malfunctions and malfunctions in the operation of injectors.

All C-class motors are equipped with a timing chain drive, it is recommended to change the chain every 150,000 runs. In our conditions, platinum-plated plugs serve 10,000 - 20,000, and there are two spark plugs for each German cylinder. It is better not to joke with candles, because if the fuel does not burn in the ignition chamber, it will burn out in the catalysts (there are two of them in Mercedes), and this will lead to their accelerated failure. One catalyst for a Mercedes in a two hundred and twentieth body costs $ 1,000. It is advisable to flush the fuel injectors every 40,000 km. The oil in the Mercedes engine should be changed every 10,000 - 12,000 km.

Ball joints of a sedan usually nurture 50-60 thousand. After 100 thousand mileage, the steering rack begins to leak. Brake discs on a heavy car wear out quite quickly, front and rear discs serve about 30 thousand. In Airmatic, a compressor breaks down, which costs $ 400.

Until 2003, five-speed boxes were installed on all Mercedes W220s, but in 2003 it was replaced by a seven-speed automatic.

Let's pay attention to the technical characteristics of the Mercedes S-class W220 with a 5.0 liter V8 engine - S500.
