Once upon a time a similar effect was promised by the "Miracle mitten", which flashed on TV screens ten years ago. Then, frankly speaking, this technology did not cause our enthusiasm. The appearance of modern car shampoos and polishes, which, according to the manufacturers, are suitable for washing without water, did not arouse enthusiasm either. We decided to test four different samples to back up the skepticism with deadly practical results.
All formulations are designed for washing without water. The operating temperature at the time of the tests turned out to be positive (about 3 ºС), so the summer versions of the potions went into operation ("Pure Shine" turned out to be all-season). Note that companies producing summer formulations also have winter ones, which are used in the temperature range of 0 ...- 30 ºС.
The technology of using drugs - in the sidebar. But the result of the work is unexpected: all the tested compositions showed themselves worthy. At the same time, the car, as it stood on a dry platform, remained on it. Skepticism, on the other hand, quietly stepped aside.
We did not notice any fundamental differences in application, wiping, polishing. Each formulation has its own scent - from neutral to fruity, but this did not cause irritation. There is no clear leader as well as an outsider. The same "Captain Bright", for example, forgave us a couple of mistakes when we, inexperienced washers, climbed with the same rag from a shiny surface onto dry dirt. And "Pure Shine" promised to wash the glass at the same time. It didn't work out as well as the bodywork, but still nice.
Whether or not to use such means is a psychological rather than technical question. Not everyone decides to wash without water, even after seeing our results. TECHNOLOGY OF SUCCESS
We spray the drug in an even layer (each bottle is equipped with a dispenser) on the surface of the body (not on a rag!) So that the dirt gets wet. This happens almost before our eyes. With a microfiber cloth, we run along the body in one direction, collecting dirt. Circular and reciprocating movements are undesirable. We remove the dirt element by element, starting from the roof.
For reference: microfiber is called different rags. In our case, this is a terry towel type napkin, its composition is 80% polyester and 20% polyamide. Optimal size napkins - about 35 x 40 cm. To wash one Ford-Focus or Kia-Sid car, you will need at least three to four napkins, if you use them rationally. Each costs 40-50 rubles. Experienced washers fold the napkin twice - that's eight sides - and wipe each side in turn. Note that not all manufacturers give a clear recommendation for wiping materials, but we do not recommend saving money. Agree that the combination of the words "dry" and "washing" sounds absurd. However, a dry car wash has been around for over ten years. Let's figure it out - dry car wash, what it is. This method of car care came to our country from the United States and in recent years is gaining more and more popularity.
The essence of a car wash without water is that an emulsion is sprayed onto the surface of the car, which contains surfactants, silicone fluids and other auxiliary substances.
The components of the emulsion not only cover the surface of the car, but are also adsorbed (envelop) on dirt particles and thereby reduce their adhesion to the paintwork. After this process, dirt is easily removed from the surface using a soft microfiber material.
Advantages and disadvantages of washing without water
The advantages of this method of cleaning the surface of the car body are obvious:
- You can "bring beauty" anywhere without environmental pollution;
- independence from the water source and no loss of time in the queue;
- quick cleaning, which allows you to constantly keep the car clean;
- with this method of car care, the surface of the car body is polished at the same time, and paintwork acquires water-repellent properties (anti-rain effect);
- dry washing is very convenient in winter conditions.
Now about the disadvantages that are also there. Let us immediately reassure the critics of this method, who argue that dry surface treatment damages the paintwork due to the abrasive effect of particulate contamination. This is not true. Due to the enveloping of dust particles with emulsion components, they lose abrasive properties... The real disadvantages are as follows:
- the price of a means for a dry car wash and napkins is still quite high, but it pays off quite quickly;
- washing wheel arches and wheels is pointless (at least because of high consumption emulsion and wipes);
- you will have to work yourself (yourself);
- dry washing does not exclude the usual - periodically it is required to use a washing machine with shampoo.

A standard dry wash of a car body should not be confused with a dry wash of the engine, as the engine is “dry” washed using dry steam. Such engine cleaning requires stationary conditions and a special installation for generating dry steam. This effective method cleaning the engine excludes the ingress of water on electrical equipment and is preferable for use at stationary posts and service stations.
Dry washing as a business
Although dry washing in Russia is not yet as widespread as in the West, in some cities you can already see the announcements "Express dry car wash". The interest in such a business is due to the fact that this service can be offered in parking lots near supermarkets and shopping centers. The absence of the need to connect to water supply and sewerage networks, as well as the absence of pollution of parking lots, makes this service convenient for visitors. It is effective to offer services near cafes and restaurants. Another type of this business is a mobile car wash, when the service is offered directly near multi-storey buildings and collective garages.
Consider a short dry car wash business plan for two people to work together. This business plan does not include the registration of a legal entity or individual entrepreneur. It is also assumed that the entrepreneur has his own light transport.
The accumulated experience shows that two specialists can qualitatively "wash" the average a car in 15 - 20 minutes.

A serious drawback also lies in the impossibility of high-quality cleaning of a very dirty body. You don't even have to think about the wheels and the underside of the car. Everything looks beautiful in advertising, but in reality the situation is different. Sure, chemicals will handle all kinds of dirt, but think about how many microfiber towels you need to change. This will significantly increase the cost of the procedure, which will already raise doubts about its feasibility.

How technology works
The agent that is used to perform a dry car wash is contained in the spray bottle. Usually there are two options on sale:
- ready-to-use product;
- concentrate to be diluted with water.
The principle of operation is simple - we apply chemistry to the body part, wait and wipe it off with a towel. The product contains about 20 components with lubricating properties. This provides good protection of the body coating from scratches, which often appear during normal washing.
Instructions for use
- First, you need to assess the degree of contamination of the car body. If you have large lumps of dirt, you should get rid of them with plain water. Do not rely on the fact that you can clean the body of a thick layer of dirt using this technology. But the water consumption will obviously be less, compared to an ordinary sink. You will also need water to wash dirty towels that remain after a dry wash. Washing is simple - soak in hot water, adding a little dishwashing detergent or liquid soap.
- The microfiber towel must be folded in four. As a result, you get 8 sides, which must be applied gradually.
- Shake the cleaner to mix well together.
- Washing is carried out from top to bottom. It is advisable to start from the roof, move on to glass, hood, trunk lid, doors and bumpers.
- Large body parts (hood, roof) should preferably be divided into several segments and washed separately.
- Apply a sufficient amount of the product to the body element so that the dirt is well saturated. There should be no dry areas. Wait 10-20 seconds, apply the product on a towel and start wiping off the part.
- At the first stage, we wipe the body part in the horizontal direction, practically without pressing. You need to move slowly and only in one direction. Otherwise, you will simply stir the dirt. During the next pass, you should already lightly press on the towel, which will help to remove the remaining particles of dirt. A good solution is the snake movement.
- After each step, remove the towel and open the clean side. After using each of the 8 sides, take a clean towel.
- After removing the dirt, wipe the surface of the part dry using a separate microfiber towel.
- It is not necessary to apply a lot of product to the glass, since it contains wax, which can cause ugly stains.
- Wheels should be washed with separate towels. Note the presence of dust from the brake pads on the wheels, which can scratch the body very quickly.
Materials and products for dry car wash
Our main tool is a chemical that is recommended to be stored and used at temperatures above zero. Additional formulations are also available for the control of stubborn contaminants such as bitumen or bird droppings. It is almost impossible to remove such dirt using a basic product.
