The experts of the British magazine Auto Express decided to answer this question, who in 2017 conducted their independent test of all-season tires of size 205/55 R16.

Undoubtedly, all-season tires are becoming the mainstream for tire manufacturers as motorists seek the best performance in any adverse driving conditions. Over the past 12 months, several new all-season developments have been launched and the range of a number of existing models has been significantly expanded.

Even Continental, which has been an ardent supporter of seasonal tire change for years, has launched its first all-season product. Unfortunately, the Continental AllSeasonContact tires were not included in the test, since at the time of the test they were not yet available for sale, but the absence of this novelty did not become an obstacle for the expert group, and eight popular models were selected to find out which of the bottom is better. all suitable for year round riding.

Snow tests were carried out at Nokian's test site in Ivalo, Finland, and cold, wet and dry tests at Continental's Contidrome near Hanover, Germany. This year, additional disciplines were added to the test program in the form of temperature-sensitive tests of wet handling and braking efficiency, not only in cold weather, but also in warmer weather, which, according to experts, should fully reveal the performance characteristics of all-seasons.

All-season tires in size 205/55 R16 were tested this year and are suitable for many family cars. The winner of last year's 2016 all-season tire test in the size 225/45 R17, the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-2, in the size 205/55 R16, lost ground and moved down to second place. But this does not detract from the merits of the model. Vector 4Seasons Gen-2 proved to be the most effective in the snow tests - best in braking and traction.

Unlike some of its competitors, it managed to maintain good performance in both deep water and shallow water, and in all wet tests did not overlook the Michelin CrossClimate + tires.

In dry conditions, the behavior of the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-2 resembled the specialized winter tires Continental WinterContact TS 860: the same lack of sharpness and weak steering sensitivity. In a fuel economy test, the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-2 tires have proven that the controversial combination of wet grip and low rolling resistance is possible.

3rd place - Nokian Weatherproof. Overall rating: 99.1%


There was also a place on the podium for the silver medalist of last year's all-season test. As expected from the Finnish brand, it proved to be very reliable and strong in the snow. Both her and goodyear tire there was a clear margin of safety over rivals.

5th place - Falken Euroall AS200. Overall rating: 97.7%


The asymmetric tread design made it difficult to distinguish between the Falken Euroall AS200 and the Hankook Kinergy 4S. In almost all tests they ran closely together, with the only difference that the all-season products Falken had the advantage on wet surfaces and snow, while the Hankook on dry asphalt.

While the Falken was second in the finish line on dry trails, it lost a full meter in braking performance to Hankook tires.

Also the highest achievements of the Euroall AS200 were two third places: in lateral stability on wet roads and in resistance to lateral aquaplaning.

In snowy Finland, the Falken tires had a slight edge on everything except lateral stability. However, as with the Hankook and the other asymmetric Toyo Celsius test model, cornering traction was less than most rivals.

The Falken Euroall AS200 was fourth in rolling resistance. Compared to the discipline-winning Nokian Weatherproof tires, they need 3% more fuel.

6th place - Hankook Kinergy 4S. Overall rating: 97.5%


The asymmetric design of the Hankook Kinergy 4S all-season tire was closer to summer models while most all-season competitors had directional tread patterns. At the same time, unlike the Michelin CrossClimate + “summer” tires, Hankook products are distinguished by a large number of plowshares and micro-cuts, which are vital for traction on snow.

In Nokian's White Hell, however, this did not help the Kinergy 4S, and they consistently came to the finish line after the summer-oriented CrossClimate +. The lamellas came in handy in deep water, but in shallow water the tires with directional design “steered”.

The asymmetry of the tread pattern played a role on dry roads, where the Hankook tires came in third in both tests. The rolling resistance turned out to be relatively high, which, as for a fairly new model, is a cause for concern.

Verdict: "Good on dry", but this unconventional approach for all-season tires is not suitable for other weather conditions.

7th place - Toyo Celsius. Overall rating: 96.4%


If asymmetric tires The Kumho had a certain focus on snow, but the Toyo Celsius was not the case. In the white tests, they sat in middle positions and were more in line with the summer-oriented Michelin CrossClimate + tires.
