This is one of the simplest types of tuning. Why is this needed? There are many options. The most common reason is that you don't like the look. Let's say you want the wheels to look better. For this, the disc must be of a larger diameter. Or you bought a second-hand car, but the design of the rims absolutely does not suit you. Perhaps you liked some specific wheels, but their dimensions are not included in the list recommended by the car manufacturer. You can also change the wheels for reasons of practicality. But how can the installation of such wheels turn out in the future? Let's figure it out.

First, let's remember the key parameters of the wheel.

  • 185 - tire profile width in mm
  • 65 - the percentage of the height of the tire cross-section to the width
  • R - designation of a tire of a radial structure
  • 15 - landing diameter in inches

So, there are several ways to deviate from the stock wheel size.

1. Wider tire

While maintaining the standard size, increase the width of the tire profile while maintaining the percentage of height to width. In our example, we get 195/65 R15. It is important to know here that all vehicles are designed for the installation of snow chains of at least 12 mm in size. Indeed, in some European countries, driving on mountain roads without chains is prohibited, and no self-respecting manufacturer will make a car so that it cannot be used in the mountains of France or Switzerland. Therefore, an increase in the width of the tire profile is permissible in most cases by up to 24 mm. This will make the car slightly softer on the move, and wider tires will improve braking performance.

2. Higher tire profile

Leave the same, and increase the percentage of the tire's profile height to width to 70. In our example, we get 185/70 R15. The outer diameter of the wheel increases by 20 mm, which is quite acceptable (remember in reserve for installing chains). Everything would be fine, but in our particular example, the factor interferes with the fact that tires of this size are produced mainly for commercial vehicles and they are too tough and expensive to install on a passenger car. However, in other dimensions, the situation may be different.

3. Change the diameter of the disc

The story with the car of an acquaintance is very indicative. He bought a Kia Rio with a 1.6 engine and a 6-speed automatic. The standard wheels of the car were 185/65 R15 in size. The owner was driving through the summer season and was not happy with the car's stiff suspension and insufficient ground clearance. Then he decided to change the behavior of the car, not by tuning the springs with shock absorbers, but by working with the wheels. In preparation for the next summer season, he used forged wheels with a diameter of 14 inches, completely matching the installation dimensions.

There is more air between the wheel and the tire. The outer diameter of the wheel has also grown (by 9 mm). As a result, the ride is fantastic. When overcoming irregularities in the road, the car, initially not famous for its energy-intensive suspension, began to resemble the cars of the logan-like family, which are super comfortable on Russian roads. Softly, quietly, smoothly. All the problems of the killed Russian roads and the stiff Korean suspension disappeared. He does not plan to drive, because the possible deterioration of directional stability at very high speeds does not bother him.

However, a decrease in disc diameter is very rare. Much more often it happens that the owner chooses disks one or even two sizes larger. And "wraps" them in low-profile tires. At the same time, the overall dimensions of the wheel hardly change or grow within acceptable limits.

It looks impressive, but first of all, the smoothness of the ride suffers. And the chances of damaging a wheel on a bad road are much greater, because the lower the profile height of the tire, the less the ability of such a tire to withstand shock loads. In everything you need to know when to stop. Returning to our example, Rio and Solaris cars in expensive trim levels sport 16-inch wheels with 195/55 R16 tires. In this case, you can play a little with the sizes. For example, a 195/60 R16 tire will fit into the wheel well without any problems, since its outer diameter will increase by only 19 mm. The clearance will grow by a decent 9.5 mm, but you can forget about the softness of the stroke provided by 15-inch wheels of the basic modification.

4. Increase the width of the disk and change the offset

A separate story when the car owner decides to install wider discs. Some people like it when the wheel protrudes slightly beyond the arch. Please note that changing the dimensions of the rim and tire can significantly increase the weight of the wheel assembly. Such weighting will negatively affect the resource of the suspension elements and even the body, since large unsprung masses can cause resonant vibrations for which the suspension is not structurally designed. It is also important to remember about such a parameter as wheel offset.

Those who like to change the offset of the rims, as a rule, tend to place the wheels wider. The aesthetic component of such changes is controversial, but the resource of the suspension elements will certainly decrease.

The consequences of increasing the overall dimensions of the wheel:

pros

Minuses

Increase in clearance... On our roads, every millimeter of ground clearance counts. If the bottom of the car is 5–10 mm farther from the potholes, then there is less chance of damaging it on a bad road.

The wheel can touch the body elements. If the width and diameter of the wheel grows by no more than 24 mm from the maximum wheel size recommended by the manufacturer, then this is not a problem for you. Only after that you can't put the chains on.

Improved efficiency. Economy improves slightly on country roads, especially on vehicles with gearboxes that have few gears (4 or 5).

Increase in car swelling. Yes, the roll will increase slightly, due to the fact that the center of mass is now located slightly higher. In practice, this means a slightly lower limiting transfer speed.

Changing the speedometer and odometer readings. Standard devices always overestimate the readings. You can check by GPS. And with new, slightly larger wheels, the readings will come in line with reality. Whether it's plus or minus, it's up to you. Still, such a discrepancy is made primarily for security reasons. We are for accurate instrument readings.

Decrease in dynamic performance. The new wheels are a little harder for the engine to turn, and they themselves are a little heavier.

Reducing disc overhang (when the wheels protrude beyond the wheel arches) provides a wider track, which increases the lateral stability of the machine.

Wide disc is easily damaged when touching the curb. In addition, if the width of the disc is much larger than the standard one, the tire carcass does not work correctly. This leads to increased tire wear.

In most cases the appearance becomes more aesthetic and catchy.

Wheels protruding strongly from the arches overload wheel bearings and make driving difficult... As soon as the front wheel hits an uneven road, the steering wheel literally pulls out of your hands.

It is convenient to use a tire calculator for calculations.

Legal aspect

By law, non-standard wheels are prohibited. Therefore, any experimentation with the dimension of tires or rims is illegal. An exception if the new dimension is allowed to be installed by the manufacturer. However, in reality, not everything is so scary: if the rims on your small car are not welded to a width of 12 inches, if the diameter is not 19 inches or more, then such wheels will not arouse the interest of the traffic police. But there will already be problems with obtaining a diagnostic card.

But what if you put more wheels? - ZR examination

With the help of a tire calculator, you can easily calculate how the outer dimensions of the wheel, the height of the ground clearance (clearance), the speedometer readings and other characteristics will change when tires with a different standard size are installed on your car. The calculator calculates all tire sizes in millimeters, and the vehicle speed in km / h.
And also the calculator will help to calculate the required rim width for a specific tire size.

How to use the tire calculator:

First enter the standard size installed on your car, and then the one that you want to install and click "calculate". The table on the right shows the results of the calculator's calculations.
Detailed information on tire marking in the section: tire marking.

We recommend that you only install the factory tire sizes that are specified in the operating instructions for your machine. Installation of non-standard sizes may void the dealer's warranty, as well as impair the performance and handling of the vehicle.

When converting tire sizes on a calculator, keep in mind that:

With an increase in the diameter of the rim (and, as a consequence, a decrease in the height of the tire profile, so that the outer diameter of the wheel remains unchanged), the load on the car's suspension increases, and comfort also deteriorates (the car will become noticeably stiffer).

With an excessive increase in the profile of the tire, the car becomes a "roll", it is less controlled and at critical values of the height of the profile, the tire can begin to cling to the parts of the body and suspension of the car, which will subsequently lead to its destruction.

In the life of every experienced car owner with 3-5 years of active driving experience, there have been situations when he needed to pick up a wheel rim. However, it is far from always possible to do this procedure according to the available parameters and geometric characteristics, because the disk itself may not be at hand. In such cases, car owners are often helped by knowing the dimensions of their tires, since by these numbers it is enough to simply choose the product of interest.

Many car enthusiasts who are preparing to buy new wheels to replace worn out, damaged, or simply due to seasonal “overfitting”, often ask the same question - how to choose wheels for tires according to tire size?

Tire dimension on label

To answer this question, you need to know the general parameters by which these two products are inextricably linked, in particular:

  • The radiality should be the same for both the rim and the tire, because this parameter always determines the correspondence of rims and tires, as well as their compatibility. So, the most popular wheel sizes are the range from R13 to R20, where the figure shows the diameter in inches, but many motorists mistakenly consider this value to be the radius.
  • The width of the discs, corresponding to the same size on the tire, which can only slightly fluctuate. This dimension on the wheel is indicated by the letter J, preceded by its value in inches. So, for example, the range 5.0J-6.0J corresponds to the tire width 175 mm, 5.5J-7.0J - 215 mm, 6.0J-7.5J - 225 mm, and 7.0J-8.5J - 245 mm. Thus, the width of the rims and the width of the tires are absolutely interrelated indicators.
  • The next important indicator is the profile of the rubber, which determines the overall dimension of the wheel assembly. So, for example, for radiality R17 on Lada Kalina, tires with a profile height of 40 to 45 mm can be supplied, because the wheel arches and suspension structures are arranged only for such a maximum size, and, for example, with the same dimension on a Toyota Land Cruiser 200 will calmly stand up to a 100 mm high profile.
  • Recently, rubber has been produced only tubeless, because the risk of an accident in the event of a puncture is minimal, and the edges of the tire, as well as the sides of the rim of the disc, have special rigid ribs, which completely eliminate the passage of air after contact between rubber and steel. However, with chamber tires, it is necessary to look for discs suitable for it, and this is very problematic.
  • Those cars that actively drive off-road often use devices such as beadlocks - powerful bolted steel discs mounted on the inside of the wheel and pressing the rubber. These devices prevent the tire from spontaneously jumping off the wheel rim even when it can no longer maintain pressure due to an accident.

Beadlock disc

The best option when purchasing a disc is to have the rubber itself in stock, or at least know all its characteristics and be ready to always find it in a search engine on the Internet so that the seller can correctly select the disc of interest to his client with the optimal parameters.

How to choose the right disc width

When choosing the width of the rims, the driver should adhere to certain rules, because there are some inconsistencies in the international designation of dimensions.

First of all, you should not be mistaken in the different system of units, because the width of the rim of the disc is determined in inches, while the tire is indicated in millimeters. So, in order to compare the numerical indicators, you need to multiply each inch by 23.5 mm.

Also, the buyer should not be confused by the fact that several standard sizes of disks can fit on a tire of the same width. This is due to the fact that the rubber product is elastic and can deform at the interface with the disc by several centimeters.

When choosing a disc, you need to remember that a wheel that is too narrow can cause the tire to break off, since during the pressure build-up it will expand more and more, and the sides of the steel product may not hold it at a certain moment.

On the contrary, a disc that is too wide can be damaged, since the lateral profile of the rubber will not protect it from negative external influences, especially when driving off-road or in deep snow.

The disc for use only in the summer period can be wider, so that the car looks more spectacular on the track or in a big city, and in winter, on the contrary, narrower, because the powerful side parts of the rubber should protrude as much as possible.

If a car enthusiast chooses stamped discs and prepares to protect them with caps, he should be aware that plastic or rubber linings are also thick, and so that the wheel does not look like with a negative offset, he should choose its smallest width, based on the table values given above.

Low profile rubber wheel

Many large points of sale of such products often have special calculator programs available, combined with an electronic database for accounting for goods in a warehouse. So, the car enthusiast only needs to inform the parameters of his tires, which the seller immediately drives into the program, as initial data, and a list of the most suitable products available in stock is displayed on the screen.

How to choose the rim size for the tire size

Which wheels are suitable for which tires and vice versa? In order for the driver to be confident in the correct choice of the disc he is interested in and not to regret the useless purchase later, he must take into account the following features of this product, looking for the right thing for himself:

  • The radiality of the tire is determined not by its outer contour, but by the landing dimension at the location of the rigid rims for installation on the disk. So, if there is no way to determine its size on a worn product, it is enough to just measure the inner diameter and divide the resulting number by 23.5 mm to convert the indicator to inches.
  • Rubber with the Ran Flat function, which is often bundled with sports cars or with those European brands, whose developers paid special attention not to practicality when replacing a flat tire, but to free space in the trunk, has very rigid sides and internal transverse ribs. This means that the rim must be selected from high strength metal, preferably in a forged version, because these rigid ribs can easily deform it during prolonged driving on a damaged tire.
  • The same can be said if the outer radius of the tire differs little from the inner one due to a too low profile. So, when driving on uneven roads, the outer surface of the rim will always be hit because the cushioning effect from the air buffer is minimal.
  • When choosing a wheel rim for a minibus, full-size SUV or a pickup truck, that is, a vehicle that can be subject to significant loads, unlike a passenger car, it is important to take into account the maximum mass index on the tire. This means that if the wheel can be inflated to 2.7-3 atm., And it will be operated under a constant load of 1 ton or more, then the disk itself must also be reinforced, otherwise the normal use of the wheel assembly simply will not work.

Run flat tire

If the inner rim of a wheel has a radiality of R17 or more, it is imperative to use only a cast or forged rim as the main wheel. This is due to the fact that relatively thin stamping sheets are unstable and prone to deterioration during movement, sharp maneuvers or encountering obstacles during long-term operation of the vehicle. In the case of a spare tire, for 1-2 uses for the entire period of operation of the car, it is unlikely that anything will happen to the product.

The main mistakes of car enthusiasts when choosing rims

Not every driver can choose the product that is optimal for his car the first time. Comparison of disks by parameters is far from the final procedure, after which you can safely purchase a product. So, at retail outlets, returns often happen, as potential buyers make mistakes.

Regardless of the size and type of rubber, the disc can sit perfectly on it, but not fit on the hub. This means that information about the attachment point is also necessary, as well as about the dimension of the tires, because there are two most important indicators inherent in a particular car model. These parameters are drilling, that is, the diameter of the bore in the disc, and the bolt pattern is the number of studs and the length of each of them. Without knowing these parameters, the mistake of buying an unnecessary product is very likely, since there are many variations.

People often take a disc of the maximum allowable width and do not follow the ET - offset, and also do not resort to comparing discs. So, this characteristic, for example, ET20, 25, 30, 35, 40, means the distance in millimeters from the point of attachment of the product to the hub to the extreme plane of the disc rim.

In order to choose the right disc offset, tire sizes are not needed at all, since the dimension of the wheel arch and how much the hub is deepened beyond the transverse dimensions of the car are important here.

If these parameters are incorrectly determined, motorists are often faced with the fact that the rubber touches the wheel arches when driving, when cornering or while driving on a bad road and, accordingly, interferes with the active operation of the shock absorbers. In addition, the wheel may begin to protrude outside the car, which will inevitably contaminate the body in rainy weather without installing additional wheel arch liners. There is also a risk of damage to the discs when parking the car in parallel near curbs.

High profile rubber with a small radius disc on an SUV

In order to avoid these errors, motorists should study all the technical parameters of not only their rubber, but also the car itself, using the operating manual or consulting with experts in this field.

Before choosing a car, you need to use a special calculator yourself, since many sites have such a help system for motorists. So, for example, following the link, you can enter the make of the car, its model, modification, year of manufacture, VIN number, tire size and other known parameters and the system will absolutely accurately determine all ranges of disks that will most likely fit without any modifications or problems with the hub a specific "iron horse".

In addition, immediately on such portals there is information about which brands and at what price produce and sell these wheels, which will help the buyer to finally decide on the purchase and then not regret it.

In order to choose the right tires for the disks, you need to know certain parameters, failure to adhere to which will seriously worsen the car's behavior on the road. Since the tire is put on the rim of the rim, the width of the profile must be proportional to it. Immediately, we note that, despite the tuning widespread in recent years, automakers categorically do not recommend it. After all, if the sizes of disks and tires are very different, then the contact patch will not be even, which means that the control may get out of control.

In general, the question of the correspondence of tires and disks can be viewed from two sides. The first is the selection of tires and wheels based on the manufacturer's recommendations, and the second is this fitment. Fitment is the study of the fit of the tire on the rim and the position of the wheels in relation to the wheel arches, which includes negative camber, low landing and other delights that we will not talk about, since we consider it more important to tell how to choose the right one from the point of view of safety and comfort tires to disks.

In order to choose the right tires for the rims, you need to know the labeling of the rims.

Ideally, that is, to be sure of safety, the PCD disc (the diameter of the circle of the centers of the mounting holes) should not be changed. In extreme cases, the dimensions of the rims and tires may not match at all, but then eccentric bolts are used for fastening, which allow you to install rims with a PCD of 100 mm on cars with a PCD of 98 mm. However, it is worth noting that the maximum difference in displacement should not exceed 2 mm, and ideally, the alignment of tires and disks should be one hundred percent.

The dimensions of the disks and tires must also match with their central hole, but if for certain reasons this is not possible, an adjusting ring will come to the rescue (it is also a spacer ring). The setting ring has an outer diameter equal to the diameter of the hole in the disc, and the inner diameter corresponds to the diameter of the car hub. If the setting ring is put correctly, then the running characteristics will not change. It should be noted that the discs do not have stamped locating rings. Install them only on.

The disc markings do not indicate the maximum load ( MAX LOAD), you can find out this parameter either in the passport that some manufacturers of domestic wheels attach to their products, or look for this information on the website of the wheel manufacturer. This information is not very important, as manufacturers usually make discs with a margin of safety. But, if for some reason you decide to put, say, disks for a car on a jeep, then the maximum disk load will be an important parameter. And if you do not take it into account, the wheel may not withstand the load and deform, even falling into a small hole.

In addition, even if the tire and wheel sizes are the same in all respects, there is still a risk that the wheel will not fit on the car. The reason for this is the so-called X-factor, when the disc rests against the suspension parts or the caliper, which is associated with the form of stamping or casting. Therefore, we recommend that you first try it on before mounting a tire on a wheel.

The tire profile width of a vehicle is the distance in mm between the outer sides of the tire sidewalls when inflated, and does not include various sidewall elevations such as markings, trims, upholstery, etc.

Metric tire section width

The metric dimension of the tire profile width is indicated on the tire bead in the form of marking, for example, 225/45 R17, where 225 is the tire profile width in millimeters.

Unlike the tire profile, which must be calculated as a percentage relative to the width of the rubber profile, the width is immediately indicated on the tire. Metric tires can be quickly converted to inches if you need to choose the right tires to replace inch tires or to find the right inch tires to replace metric tire widths. To accurately calculate the width of the tire, remember that 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters.

Inch tire profile width

Inch tire profile widths are most commonly found in American crossover, SUV, and sports car tire manufacturers. On the sidewall of an inch wheel, you can find a designation that will indicate the dimension, for example, 31x10.5 R15, where 10.5 is the designation of the tire width in inches. To calculate the metric wheel width, you need to multiply 10.5 inches by 2.54 centimeters, and you get: 10.5 inches = 26.67 centimeters, which corresponds to 265 metric tire widths.

What does the tire profile width affect?

What does the tire profile width affect? - a fairly popular question among car owners who, for one reason or another, would like to go by increasing or decreasing the width of the tire for their car.

Wide tires - pros and cons

As a rule, the bulk of car owners first of all think about increasing the width of the tire. A wide tire will give the car a sporty look, it will look gorgeous on any car, but at the same time, it will not always improve the safety and driving pleasure of a car with wide tires. For each specific car, the optimal tire width is calculated in relation to the weight and power of the car and has its own limits, within which you can install any tire width on the car.

Cons of a wide tire:

  • Increase in wheel weight
  • Increased risk of aquaplaning
  • Increased braking distance on wet roads
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Increased load on the undercarriage
  • Increase in tire cost

Narrow tires - pros and cons

Most often, the question of narrow car tires arises due to the lack of funds to purchase the sizes recommended by the manufacturer. It is difficult to imagine another reason why a car owner would deliberately choose to put tires on their car narrower than the automaker recommends. Nevertheless, there are a variety of situations in which narrow wheels may appear on the car. What can we expect from the behavior of a car with narrow tires?

Pros of narrow tires:

  • Low purchase price
  • Steering wheel turns with less effort
  • Below is the effect of aquaplaning
  • Improving rut behavior
  • Reduced wheel weight
  • Reduced fuel consumption
  • Less rolling resistance

Which tires are better wide or narrow?

To the question: Which tires are better wide or narrow? - you can answer in such a way that for each machine and its operating conditions it is necessary to select the optimal option for the width of the tires, within the limits recommended by the manufacturer. If you follow the recommended dimensions, you can change the width of the rubber with virtually no change in the behavior and safety of the car.

It is possible to follow the path of a significant increase in the width of tires beyond the recommended dimensions if the car has increased power, improved driving characteristics, by installing reinforced and improved spare parts. Increasing the width of the tire beyond the norm, it is necessary to understand that safety on a wet road is significantly reduced, therefore, in this case, a car with wide tires must be used extremely carefully or completely refrain from using it. A significant increase in tire profile width will require an increase in disc width.
