Another, already the fourth, charged hatchback Volkswagen golf R appeared before an astonished audience in Frankfurt. This time, the German designers have worked more thoroughly, preparing a sports version of a civilian car that can accelerate almost as fast as the famous Porsche 911.
Externally, the charged Golf R in the 4th version differs from the civilian car (7th generation) by other bumpers, the presence of side "skirts", aluminum housings of side mirrors, alloy wheels 18 or 19 inches, a spoiler, four sports tailpipes exhaust system and other bi-xenon optics. The cosmetic changes made added the desired sportiness to the hatchback and at the same time slightly improved the aerodynamics of the body, which is extremely important for a sports car.
Inside, German designers and engineers have come up with a completely new "Carbon Touch" finish with leather and fabric materials that mimic carbon fiber.
Also, it could not do without comfortable sports bucket seats, no less sports dashboard, metal pedals, door sills, a different interior lighting system and a compact three-spoke steering wheel.
Specifications. Under the hood of the new Volkswagen Golf R is a turbocharged petrol unit with four cylinders with a total displacement of 2.0 liters. The EA888 engine, also known from the Audi S3, is equipped with a direct fuel injection system and new system adjusting the lifting height of the exhaust valves. Maximum power this engine is 300 hp, achieved at 5500 - 6200 rpm, and the peak torque falls at around 380 Nm, which allows to provide unsurpassed dynamics: from zero to 100 km / h, this car accelerates in 5.1 seconds. Note that the figures given refer to the modification with a 6-speed manual transmission. Also, the developers will offer a variant with a 6-speed "automatic" DSG, equipped with two clutches, which will bring the starting acceleration time from 0 to 100 km / h to 4.9 seconds, which is only 0.1 seconds slower than the base Porsche 911, but that same 0.1 seconds faster than the Cayman S.
The maximum driving speed of the 2014 VW Golf R will be electronically limited to 250 km / h, with a scale marked to 320 km / h on the speedometer. With regard to fuel consumption, the expected average level of gasoline consumption should be about 7.1 liters per 100 km for the version with "mechanics" and about 6.9 liters for the version with "automatic". CO2 emissions will be 165 and 159 g / km respectively.
The suspension and steering arrangement was borrowed from the Golf GTI version, but all the settings were revised again, and the ground clearance received another five-millimeter reduction (total -20 mm compared to the civilian version). The fresh "erk" is equipped with all-wheel drive based on the fifth generation Haldex clutch and electronic imitation of differential locks for each of the axles. Also, as an option, it will be possible to order an adaptive suspension on all four wheels with three standard operating modes: "Comfort", "Normal" and "Sport". The braking system of the car will be disc, ventilated, while the diameter of the front brake discs is 340 mm, while the rear engineers limited themselves to 310-mm discs.
Options and prices. Sales new version The Volkswagen Golf R sports hatchback will begin later this year in Germany. The starting price of the basic version of the sport hatch with manual transmission will be at least 38,325 euros. In Russia, the novelty should appear next year.

Our car had an active suspension (an option, not offered in Russia) and Driver Select (+6560 rubles). In Race mode with stiff shock absorbers and a molded steering wheel, the car swells and looks macho. But when Normal or Comfort is on, it’s easy and simple ... like a regular Golf. And this is good. Few cars are capable of combining two characters, and this one can. It may be plain, despite the four tailpipes and new bumpers, and not striking. A spoiler or two will help here. Or large 19-inch wheels (although VW does not offer them in Russia either) instead of 18-inch wheels.
We did not drive the DSG version, but if the box is the same as in the Audi S3 (in fact, the cars are the same), it should be fireworks. And if the nerds in the pub start a song that there is no driver's car without mechanics, just remind them that with the "handle" the car accelerates to a hundred by 0.2 s slower.
