Mitsubishi galant the ninth generation was one of the first cars that came to us not from Europe or Japan. This is a typical "American" modernized for the Russian domestic market. The Russian premiere of this car took place in September 2006, and sales overseas started two years earlier. Why did Mitsubishi marketers wait so long before presenting a new product on the Russian market? The answer was found quickly. According to representatives of the Japanese concern, before releasing the ninth generation Mitsubishi Galant to Russia, all components and assemblies of the car were revised taking into account the peculiarities of operation in Russia, which took a whole year and a half. As a result, 308 changes were made to the design.

The main ones are increased to 165 mm ground clearance, a battery with a larger capacity for starting at low temperatures, as well as more powerful than in the American versions, the starter and alternator. After another year and a half, Galant underwent a slight restyling.

The most noticeable changes as a result of the update were the exterior of the car - a new radiator grille trim appeared, and the fog lights became larger. In addition, the design of the rear lights has changed.

As for the interior, here we should highlight the appearance of buttons for controlling the audio system and cruise control on the front of the steering wheel (previously these buttons were located on the rear side), new materials for the interior trim "wood-like" (previously - "like aluminum"), and also change the color of the illumination of instruments and vehicle control systems from blue to red.

Now about everything in more detail. After the appearance of Mitsubishi Galant on the Russian market, it turned out that in terms of the price range, the new product is on the same level with the top-end versions of class “D” cars, which include the popular Mazda6, as well as Opel Vectra and Hyundai NF. In turn, the size of the ninth generation Galant competed with more expensive and venerable rivals - Nissan teana, ToyotaCamry and Volvo S80 and BMW 5-Series.

And so, we sit down in the salon. The front seats have a completely non-American profile - the lateral back support fixes the driver's body well. The driver's electrically adjustable seat makes it easy to find a comfortable driving position. Only the absence of longitudinal adjustment of the steering column reminds of the overseas origin. The annoying blue backlight was replaced with a "European" orange. Due to the fact that the buttons for controlling the audio system and cruise control were moved from the back of the steering wheel to the outside, it became easier and more understandable to operate them. The plastic of the front panel is soft to the touch, but the quality is not different. Despite the presence of a duplicate speedometer scale in miles, the instrument panel is very informative and raises no objections.

There is real space on the back sofa. With an average height of the front riders, the rear passengers can easily cross their legs and not feel any discomfort. The width of the space is quite enough for three adults, but you will not envy those who sit in the middle. The back seat cushion is molded only for two and when a speed bump passes, the central passenger can easily hit the ceiling with his head. In general, the spaciousness of the cabin is the undoubted trump card of the Mitsubishi Galant, which compensates for the rustic finish.

The luggage compartment with a volume of 435 liters is not distinguished by its large capacity and ease of use, primarily due to the not very good shape of the internal space and the large loading height. Also, transformation rear seat not provided - for transportation of long items there is only a hatch in the armrest.

The boot lid is opened either with a button on the ignition key or with a lever in the cabin.

All vehicles delivered to Russian market, are equipped with only one engine, namely a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder MIVEC engine with four valves per cylinder and an ECI-MULTI multipoint injection system. This power unit has one undeniable advantage, which is the automatic octane correction system, which allows you to fill the tank with 92nd gasoline. With such an engine, the Mitsubishi Galant produces 158 hp. and 213 Nm of torque, which is achieved at 4,000 rpm. Paired with the engine, only an automatic transmission is available, namely a 4-speed automatic transmission INVECS-II Sports Mode with a manual gear selection function.

You shouldn't wait for the dynamics of a 158-horsepower engine, so it is better to postpone the "traffic light" races. No wonder the car was developed for the American market. Galant's habits can be characterized by two epithets - soft and imposing. These qualities are manifested in virtually everything. But this does not mean that it is impossible to joke on it. Automatic transmission INVECS-II is able to adapt to the driving style. In dynamic mode, each gear turns to the red zone, and when the throttle is released, the gearbox keeps the rpm, not trying to switch to a step higher in order to react more quickly to pressing the accelerator at the right time. In quiet mode, the switching occurs virtually unnoticed by passengers.

As far as the suspension settings are concerned, the "overseas" habits are also unmistakably captured here. On the asphalt waves there is a rather strong lateral swing. The turns are passed with noticeable rolls. With a slightly sharper approach to the bend, the tires begin to squeak plaintively. But the pits and joints of the asphalt pavement Mitsubishi Galant clicks like seeds, without causing any inconvenience to passengers. Coupled with good noise insulation and an excellent audio system, the Rockford Fosgate Galant becomes a good companion even where the quality of the roadway leaves much to be desired. The increased ground clearance will allow you to make forays into nature without fear for the safety of the bottom. With a fairly understandable steering, which in its settings is more similar to the Japanese than to the American, I was surprised by the large turning radius - where the "classmates" turn in one pass, the Galant will need at least two. Because of this, there are some inconveniences when maneuvering in a tight parking lot.

Mitsubishi Galant has a fairly extensive list of equipment that competitors cannot boast of at a similar price. Once upon a time, in the late 1980s, the Mitsubishi Galant was one of the sportiest sedans in its class. It offered steerable rear wheels and a powerful turbocharged version, the VR4. Subsequent generations became more comfortable-oriented, and interest in the model dropped noticeably. A brief revival took place in 1997 when the eighth Galante debuted with an attractive dynamic look. True, the car itself was not so interesting.

The last Galante does not look as daring as before. It is built on the Mitsubishi PS platform - common with the Mitsubishi Endeavor and Eclipse.

Another japanese sedan noticeably added in size, which had a positive effect on the internal dimensions. The width of the cabin has increased to 145 cm, and the space between the backs of the first and second rows - up to 94 cm. Nevertheless, the back sofa is not so spacious, and the three of them are cramped. Inside there are not enough materials more High Quality... The plastic looks cheap, and it starts to creak over time.

The American versions, in addition to the base DE, received three more trim levels: ES, LS and the sporty GTS. The SE (Sport Edition) trim replaced the GTS after restyling in 2008. At the same time, the shape of the rear lights also changed.

Six airbags and full power accessories are included in the DE standard equipment list. The ES version features body-colored moldings, exterior mirrors and door handles. The LS modification acquired an electric driver's seat. Automatic climate control was installed only in the GTS, all others were equipped with conventional air conditioning. Of the assistance systems, only ABS with electronic brake force distribution is provided (except for DE). The stabilization system was not installed.

As for security, the ninth Galant, according to the US Security Administration road traffic NHTSA has earned four stars. The sedan received similar marks from the IIHS Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Engines

The DE and ES versions were equipped with a 4-cylinder 2.4-liter naturally aspirated (4G69) with 160 hp, while the LS and GTS were equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 (6G75) / 230 hp. (since 2008 258 hp). The Russian Mitsubishi Galant 9 was equipped exclusively with a petrol four with a capacity of 158 hp. Both engines have a belt-type timing drive with a change interval of 60,000 km.

The 4G69 is an extremely reliable unit. Problems with it arise solely through the fault of the owner, in particular due to untimely service. Unlike its predecessor - 4G64, hydraulic lifters are not provided here. Therefore, after every 100,000 km, it is necessary to adjust the valve clearance. It is carried out using adjusting screws.

After 150-200 thousand km, oil may appear in the candle wells. It is easy to fix the leak, and you will need about 500 rubles for a set of new gaskets. After a while, the valve stem seals may "harden", which contributes to an increase in oil consumption. For replacement, it is better to use the help of a car service.

Over time, many owners begin to notice the low oil pressure warning lamp burning in full heat. It's all about the sensor itself or its contacts. In the latter case, the disease manifests itself in damp weather or during rain. Moisture gets on the connector pins. It is better to replace the sensor - from 300 rubles.

After 150-200 thousand km, the starter, generator, oxygen sensors and clogged catalyst will require attention. Most likely, due to the vibrations that have appeared, the rear engine support will also have to be replaced - from 3,000 rubles.

Top-end versions with a 3.8-liter V6 are extremely rare in Russia and there is little information on them. The V6 is the same used in the Mitsubishi Pajero IV and Endeavor. There, the engine has proven itself on the positive side. True, there are isolated cases of loosening of the fastening screws of the flaps in the intake manifold and subsequent ingress into the cylinders. And after 150-200 thousand km, due to the natural aging process, attachments begin to fail gradually.

Transmission

The Mitsubishi Galant 9 engines were aggregated only with a 4-speed automatic (F4A4B), which, in combination with a V6, provided the possibility of manual gear selection. In 2008, the V6 was equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The machine is very reliable. The main thing is not to forget to renew the oil in the box every 60,000 km.

After 100,000 km, owners often notice the appearance of small aftershocks. The disease does not progress, so there is no need to worry. Many machines passed 250-300 thousand km without problems and repairs. By this time, the drive oil seals may have to be replaced.

It is worth noting that the automatic transmission, like many machines, does not like long-term slippage. After such "exercises" Galant often goes to the service due to problems with the box.

Undercarriage

The soft suspension absorbs most road bumps. MacPherson struts work on the front axle, and a multi-link design on the rear. Fortunately, the suspension elements are pretty tough. Replacing silent blocks or levers may be needed only after 150-200 thousand km. But shock absorbers can leak after 100,000 km. After 100-150 thousand km, replacement of wheel bearings is often required (from 3,000 rubles for an analogue or 12,000 rubles - for an original assembled with a hub)

After 150-200 thousand km, the power steering pump may buzz. Repair is usually not advisable. Much safer option with replacement. The cost of a new pump is from 13,000 rubles.

The steering rack, as an example of many modern automakers, is durable. Knocks may appear only after 200-250 thousand km, and even then, only on individual copies.

Typical problems and malfunctions

The body is not prone to corrosion. However, when examining the Galant, special attention should be paid to the inside of the doors, hood and sills. Sometimes red spots are found there.

Sometimes after 100-150 thousand km there are problems with the air conditioning compressor - it starts to make noise or howl. The reason may be both in the connection sleeve (from 10,000 rubles) and in the compressor itself (from 65,000 rubles). Often, a problematic unit can be repaired, which is much cheaper.

Conclusion

Mitsubishi Galant does not suffer from any serious illnesses. Malfunctions are usually age-related. True, in case of repairs, you will have to fork out pretty much - new original parts are often unjustifiably expensive. Fortunately, there are plenty of substitutes on the market.

Mitsubishi Galant is a mid-size business-class sedan, the closest competitor to Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Volkswagen passat, Ford Mondeo and other D-class cars. In production since 1974. The car looks stylish, sporty and to some extent presentable. On Galant, it is not a shame to park at some Bentley, although why should be ashamed, because Galant is almost a business class.
  • Dmitry, Orenburg. I'm happy with the car, I got a supported Mitsubishi Galant. The car was produced in 2005, in excellent condition, albeit with a mileage of 100 thousand km. I bought it in 2015, in two years I dashed off another 40 thousand km. Cool car, very roomy, and fast enough, not even the background of more modern competitors.
