Equipping cars with daytime running lights, the presence of which is provided for by the new amendments to the traffic rules, today is a very relevant topic for both citizens of Russia and neighboring Ukraine. But these innovations entailed a number of problems, which will be discussed below.

Of course, many drivers on the road faced with the fact that, not only in the dark, but even during the day in sunlight (especially for intercity routes), it is very convenient to determine the distance to an oncoming vehicle if the low beam or DRL is on it included, especially when performing maneuvers. And this is already very important point security. But, as they say, everything is done for people.

Experience of implementing the included headlights during the day

So, in Europe, the rule "Get behind the wheel - turn on the dipped beam" has existed for a long time (in Finland since the 70s). In most European countries, the decision to turn on or not turn on the low beam within the city is completely at the discretion and conscience of the driver himself (outside the settlements, BS or DRL must always be turned on). In addition, the installation of daytime running lights on vehicles not yet equipped with them is mandatory, but on preferential terms. And this suggests that in European countries they care not only about the safety of their citizens, but also about the size of their wallet. In the CIS countries, the situation is somewhat different.

In Russia, to increase road safety, a law obliging drivers to turn on low beam (BS) or DRL during daylight hours both outside the city and in the city has existed since 2010 (Resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 316). In Ukraine, it came into force only in April of this year and applies only to the autumn-winter period (from October 1 to May 1) and only when driving outside settlements.

The result of this decision of the authorities was statistics, according to which, according to the reports of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in 2011 the number of accidents in Russia actually decreased by 15%. But this is only one side of the coin. But there is another side ...

Hidden additional costs

When the dipped headlights are constantly on, the bulbs fail faster and require more frequent replacement. And here we are already talking not only about the dipped beam, but also about size bulbs, room lighting, dashboard and control devices.

For example, let's take the most common two-filament lamp H4, whose service life is about 450 hours, and the A12-5 tab, which is often used to illuminate the number, will last you even less than 230 hours. It would seem a trifle, but it can burn out on the way, and this already threatens a skirmish with the traffic police and a fine of 500 rubles. RF Code of Administrative Offenses Chapter 12, Article 12.2.

1. Management vehicle with unreadable, non-standard or state registration marks established in violation of the requirements of the state standard, except for the cases provided for in part 2 of this article, shall entail a warning or imposition administrative fine in the amount of five hundred rubles ...
The state registration plate is recognized as non-standard if it does not meet the requirements established in accordance with the legislation on technical regulation, and unreadable if readability is not ensured from a distance of 20 meters. dark time days at least one of the letters or numbers of the rear state registration plate, and during daylight hours at least one of the letters or numbers of the front or rear state registration plate.

In addition, when the headlights are constantly on, the load on the generator increases - by about 150 W / h (110 W low beam + 10 W front dimensions + 10 W rear dimensions + 10 W room illumination + 10 W illumination of the instrument panel and controls). This entails an increase in the load on the engine and, as a result, increased consumption fuel, by about 1 - 3% (for comparison, an air conditioner increases its consumption by 10%).

The amount is insignificant, and it will amount to approximately 960 rubles per year. (fuel consumption is on average 8 liters per hundred, with an increase of 2% it will be 8.16 liters, and with a distance of 20,000 km per year you overspend 32 liters of gasoline at an average cost of 30 rubles per liter). But if you add the cost of the lamps and the faster wear of the battery (after all, no one is insured from forgetting to turn off the dimensions), you get an amount per year that you don't want to part with in vain.

Daytime running lights as an alternative

Installing daytime running lights can be a good solution. But here, too, there are some nuances. New cars coming to Russian market from Europe, already equipped with DRL. Other cars, already plying the Russian open spaces, have to be equipped with DRLs on their own and at their own expense in order to save a little on the costs described above and comply with traffic regulations. For your information, we will say that today in Russia there are no more than 2.5% of cars equipped with daytime running lights, in Ukraine, no more than 1%.

At the same time, Russian legislation on the issue of installing daytime running lights on vehicles turned out to be more humane than in Ukraine. So, the technical regulations provide for the establishment of this type of lighting independently or at specialized service stations without the subsequent re-registration of vehicles in the traffic police. The main thing is that the newly installed lighting equipment meets the requirements of the technical regulations "On the safety of wheeled vehicles" clauses 6.19.1 - 6.19.9, approved by the Government of the Russian Federation on September 10, 2009, as well as GOST R 41.87-99 and UNECE rules No. 48 and No. 87.

In a nutshell, the basic requirements are reduced to the following parameters:

The brightness of the DRL should vary between 400 - 1200 candelas;
the color of the lamps must be exclusively white;
the distance between the edges of the two inner visible surfaces must be at least 60 cm;
devices should be located at a height of 25 to 150 cm above the level of the road surface;
the geometric visibility of the horizontal angle is 20 °, vertical - 10 °;
DRLs should turn on automatically when the engine is started, and turn off when the fog or dipped headlights are turned on. high beam and also when the ignition is turned off.

But since the very wording of the points of the technical regulation is somewhat blurred, and control over compliance with these very requirements is not strict enough, everyone began to interpret the concept of DRL in their own way. Who cuts diode bulbs directly into the headlights, who installs them in the foglights, and who even manages to find a use for them in the turn signals. By the way, not so long ago we wrote about installing xenon, read on.

And the result is such a cacophony of light, in which it has now become difficult to distinguish where the column is, where the car is being towed, where is the minibus, where only one of the two light is on. About motorcycles and mopeds with their one single headlamp, we will beg at all, since in such a garland they are simply lost. And here, it seems, there is no time for safety ...

Experience in implementing daytime running lights in Ukraine

In Ukraine, however, this issue was approached with the utmost severity. First, the car owner must receive an opinion on the possibility of installing DRL on his vehicle at the Security Center road traffic and automated systems of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. And after the re-equipment of the vehicle, to demand (not free of charge) from the contractors an Act of technical examination on the conformity of the design and technical condition TK Ukrainian safety requirements or a certificate of conformity. Such documents, as you understand, are issued not just anywhere, but only at certified UkrSEPRO or NAAU service centers... After passing all these procedures, the owner of the car must contact the MREO to make the appropriate changes to the registration documents. Without re-registration, no one will allow you to use DRLs except for the standard ones, of course.

As for the cost of installing daytime running lights, in Ukraine and in Russia it will be approximately the same and will amount to an average of 3000 rubles. (material + work), with the only difference that the Ukrainian will have to pay an additional 2800 rubles. (officially) for the obligatory execution of all permits. Fuel consumption when using LED bulbs will remain unchanged (increase by only 0.3%).

In general, everyone decides for himself - to install daylight running lights or not. We have presented the layout for savings. Note that bad roads increase the risk of an accident by 30-50%. And than to drive drivers into "light" bondage, the authorities would do well to worry about improving the quality of our tracks, for which these drivers actually pay, and a lot of money.

Today, every car used on the territory of the Russian Federation must be equipped with daytime running lights (DRL). Moreover, this type of optics must be turned on at any time of the day. You can learn more about how traffic rules govern in this article.

Laws and regulations governing DRL requirements

At the moment, the rules for installing DRL and the general requirements for this type of optics are regulated by many legal acts. Of course, knowing about them will not hurt every car enthusiast. The main document, which clearly indicates the requirements for daytime running lights, is the RF Government Decree No. 316, signed in May 2010.

In accordance with this document, amendments were made to the traffic rules. In particular, now daytime running lights in Russia must be installed on all cars without exception. The main requirement for DRL is that these optics or must be turned on at any time of the day, which is necessary to identify the vehicle among other road users. Otherwise, the driver could face a fine.

In accordance with GOST under the number R 41.87-99, daytime running lights are a type of optics that indicates the dimensions of the car. This document standardizes optics for all types of vehicles in accordance with European standards. That is, the installed daytime lamp (headlamp) must be certified, which means that the approval symbol must be present on the body or glass.

Basic requirements in accordance with GOST and SDA

Daily DRLs should not only be present on every car, it is important to install them correctly.

In accordance with the Russian state standard, when installing daytime running lights, the following parameters must be taken into account:

  • the optics should be located at a distance of 0.25 to 1.5 m from the roadway;
  • the minimum distance between the headlights must be at least 0.6 m, and they must be installed no further than 0.4 m from the edge of the vehicle body;
  • as for the luminous flux that daytime running lights have, it should be in the region of 25-200 cm2;
  • another parameter is the radiation strength; in total, it should vary from 400 to 800 cd.

If these parameters are not observed, the driver may face a real fine. Of course, not every traffic police inspector, in order to determine non-compliance with standards, will measure with a ruler whether you have installed the optics correctly. However, there is a penalty for this, so it is still better to follow the rules when installing the lights.

In fact, DRLs produced by well-known brands such as Philips, Hella and others meet the legal requirements. Buying such optics, it can be installed without problems at home, but problems in terms of Maintenance when you use it, you will not have a problem. As for the shortcomings, in this case he is alone. To do everything in accordance with the Russian standard, especially when it comes to old cars, you will have to intervene in the bumper design. That is, it will be necessary to make the appropriate cuts and carry out other installation work in order to install the optics (video by Azamchik Abdizhalilov).

Installation of running lights in accordance with GOST

If you intend to equip your vehicle with this type of optics, while ensuring that the installation meets the rules and standards, just follow the parameters indicated above. If you do not, then, as we have already informed, you will face a fine. Moreover, if the traffic police officer assesses this violation as "special", the car may be completely sent to the parking lot.

Therefore, in order not to incur problems, it is necessary not only to carry out installation in accordance with the requirements, but also to choose the right optics for your car. Remember that you should pay attention to the choice of the type of optics, as well as the brand, that is, the manufacturer, since a lot depends on this. When buying DRLs from well-known global brands such as Philips or, for example, Osram, you can be 100% sure that the optics fully comply with the standard.

But it is necessary to choose well-known manufacturers not only because their products comply with the rules, GOSTs and standards. Products from world brands, as practice shows, are the most reliable and efficient, and this, in turn, will allow you to travel the safest way on Russian roads. Lamps and headlights from the above manufacturers pass all the necessary tests and checks at foreign service stations. This is an indisputable plus, especially when comparing DRLs with optics made in a garage.

So, how is the installation done:

  1. When you have chosen a place for installation, you need to install the fasteners of the lanterns at the required angle, for this, self-tapping screws are used. Installation can be carried out both under the bumper and inside it; it is optimal, of course, to install the lights directly into the structure. If there are plugs in the bumper, they must be dismantled and cleaned of dust and dirt. In accordance with the dimensions of the lanterns, holes must be made in the plugs.
  2. On the reverse side of the plug, you need to cut a horizontal bar and dismantle the stiffener.
  3. The fixing angles should be screwed to the headlight bracket for further installation on the car. Then the bracket should be fixed to the plug.
  4. After these steps, you need to open the hood and install the daytime optics control unit, it must be mounted as close to the battery as possible. For installation, ties, clamps or tape are used.
  5. Then the wiring for the left and right headlights is laid. It remains only to connect the lights. According to the standard, the black cable is connected to the mass of the vehicle, and the red one must be connected with one of the cables, which is connected to the battery positive. After that, the fuse is fixed.

Needed in order to highlight and express the car during the daytime. Thanks to this, the throw of the car increases, and, accordingly, the safety of the driver. The lights are placed on the front of the vehicle. But before equipping a car with such a device, you definitely need to familiarize yourself with the legislation. You need to find out all the rules and regulations of the SDA and GOST, so in this article we will give the main nuances of working with lanterns. The law on DRL in Russia since 2011 obliges all drivers to drive in daytime with headlights on. It is worth noting that today, daytime running lights are classified not only as separate light elements, but also as dipped headlights and foglights. According to statistics, after the law was passed on the running lights, the number of road accidents decreased by almost half.

For today, relatively day lights there are requirements that are regulated by a variety of legal and by-laws. Therefore, if you decide to put daytime running lights on your car, then you definitely need to carefully read each point that is spelled out in the legislation. The first law that mentions daytime running lights is the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 316 in the city of Moscow on May 10, 2010. All the changes that were made to the decree of the Council of Ministers - the Government of the Russian Federation No. 1090 of October 23, 1993 are indicated here.

Thus, the following changes were made to the traffic rules of the Russian Federation:

  • 19. Changes have been made on the use of external lighting devices.
  • 19. 5 During daylight hours on all vehicles, dipped-beam headlamps should be used to mark the vehicle, or else.

GOST for running lights R 41.87-99 prescribes that lights are officially approved daylight on motor vehicles. Further, for daytime running lights GOST R 41.48-2004 of the same provision, but with changes to the definition of what is DRL, based on the international standards of the UN Economic Commission for Europe No. 48 reads:

"Uniform regulations that relate to the certification of vehicles, in relation to the installation of external automotive lighting and light signaling devices."

The changes were introduced on January 1, 2005, and they replace the provisions of the previous DRL standards GOST R 41.48-99. The last provision, regarding the installation of DRL in accordance with GOST, standardizes that all types of motor vehicles must have daytime lights that must necessarily comply with the UNECE requirements.

According to this requirement, on all types of lights, as well as on cars, there must be special signs approving the official and certified installation of DRL. These should be designations that determine and also show whether the equipment is standard equipment or homemade.

DRL installation in accordance with GOST

In the Russian Federation, there are special standards for DRL that must be adhered to by drivers equipped with separate warning lights. It is worth noting that the standards for installing DRLs in Russia and in Europe are slightly different.

  • The mounting height of daytime lights, relative to the ground, should be within 25-150cm.
  • Separate blocks of daytime running lights should be at a minimum distance of 60 cm from each other. The only exception is for cars characterized by a small body up to 1300 cm, therefore, a distance between the lights of 40 cm is allowed.
  • The radiation area, that is, the area that the DRL light covers, should be in the range from 25 to 200 centimeters squared.
  • The brightness of the DRL GOST or the luminous intensity provided by daylight lights is from 400 to 800 cd.

Any installation of navigation lights in accordance with GOST must comply with the above requirements and rules. If at least one parameter deviates from the norm, then if you stop on the road law enforcement, you can not only get a fine, but also lose your car, because in rare cases it can be driven away for a parking fine.

It is worth noting that, as a rule, high-quality and certified DRLs are produced by German high-quality and popular companies, such as, or. Daytime running lights of these companies differ not only in compliance with GOST of Russia, but also provide the maximum effect and the highest degree of safety when traveling in the daytime. When passing a scheduled check of a car at a service station, there are no problems, as often happens with those options for lights that were produced by car owners on their own.

The only thing that causes problems and inconveniences if DRL is installed according to Russian GOST is interference with the integrity of the vehicle structure. This is inherent mainly in old car models, which were produced before the adoption of the law with the obligatory inclusion of the light during the day when driving. That is, if you need to install DRL on a car where this is not provided, then you need to collect a full package of documents and seek official permission to make changes to mechanical structure auto. In addition, you will also have to produce more complex engineering works for their installation. It will be necessary to make cuts or cutouts in the bumper in order to accurately position the light modules for day trips. How to properly make DRL with your own hands, as well as install and connect it to a car, you can find out in.
