At the end of May 2011 in Irkutsk at the central stadium "Trud" the 7th regional BaikalMotorShow auto-tuning festival (BMSh-2011) will take place. We present to you one of the participants.


LEGEND OF STEPPES
The moment of truth came when, after a voyage through the dusty hills, we stood next to the sparkling Land cruiser 100. The iconic Japanese SUV looked like an innocent toy next to the creation of Vyacheslav Zolotukhin from the once closed city of Krasnokamensk. It was then that the full realization of the scale of this super SUV with a length of 5.8 meters, a width of 2.3 meters and the same height came. Indeed, given the ease with which the car has just literally fluttered along the slopes and stones, it is difficult to imagine that it is based on the chassis of the notorious military truck GAZ-66. Vyacheslav has known for a long time nice cars, back in the 90s, he was engaged in driving them from the Far East. He had more than one Japanese SUV at his own disposal; he plowed a lot of things on them. And over time, I wanted much more than standard factory solutions could offer, even in the class of heavy jeeps. Tuning? No, it didn’t suit me. I wanted, so to speak, a conceptually different level, something like a Mega Cruiser, but according to my own ideas about comfort, capacity, reliability, cross-country ability, and so on. So it came to the need to build your own car, freely using the achievements of the domestic and Japanese car industry.

Why is there some kind of "Hummer", here the salon is not a Spartan booth, but a spacious and comfortable, one might say cruise cabin with a great view. It is based on a double and "wide-body" cab from the Isuzu Elf truck, respectively, with "his" interior, albeit in many ways modified. But the back, that is, the luggage part is borrowed from the Noah minivan! To dock it with the Elf cab, it was necessary to expand the dimensions with inserts, and rear glass make the original. The front ensemble is no less interesting. The fenders are made using those from the GAZ-3307, the hood is original production, the radiator grill is a composite of two grilles from Prado, the headlights are from Delica.

The steering wheel is adapted from a Honda passenger car - with the steering mechanism from a 5-ton Hino, its smaller diameter did not affect the efforts, but the steering with it is sharper and faster than that of trucks.


"Cabin" freely accommodates 3 people in the back, not very crowded and four, in front of a double passenger seat from HiAce, which "spins" and folds into a table.


For reliability, the body is mounted on the frame on 12 supports, according to the experience of the Japanese, each support is made of three rubber pads.


The wheels of the 66th are barely recognizable: the disks are riveted to widen the track, the bolts are made of stainless steel, and the tires are off-road KI-115A in the size of 12.00 R18, used on the Tigers. And the front hubs have been independently redesigned with the ability to "turn off" the wheels.

It was then that "Mega-Shishiga" drove as she wanted: smoothly, softly and at the same time very confidently - the traction reserve made it possible not to resort to a downshift in most cases, even in meter-long snow on slopes. And here there is a lot of snow, and in the conditions of the hills it is formed specifically: somewhere the wind blows it out, and somewhere whole dunes are swept out. Unfortunately, our meeting with Vyacheslav took place in the conditions of melted snow, but even without that we managed to taste the delights of a truly extraordinary SUV in every sense. So huge and empty, it rides surprisingly lightly and softly both on the broken asphalt and on the steppe, dotted with furrows and rocks. It rolls over ditches and stones like a bear, with a calm gait, energy-intensive and without any "concussion". The owner says that if the car is loaded, then it floats like an executive sedan. The landscape here is, in principle, flat and hard, but a forest begins 40 km from here, with holes and ruts. For lack of time, we did not go there, but Vyacheslav had already managed to travel around a lot. Of course, the dimensions will not allow maneuvering among dense tree trunks, but in this case there is no such need - not the right operating conditions.

The wheel weighs 80 kg, which made it necessary to reinforce the spare wheel bracket more than once. It leans downward, which makes it difficult to access the trunk, but its one-piece door is planned to be converted into a more convenient two-leaf door in the future.

It is much more important that in winter you can easily go skiing and snowboarding: there are no organized trails in the vicinity of Krasnokamensk, but there are as many wild slopes as you want - choose for every taste, and Mega-Shishiga will take you to the starting point without any lift. No noise or vibration is annoying, although no serious additional insulation has been done. The supply of heat to a large salon is also no problem. Yes, at the same GAZ there are examples of small-scale construction of bonneted off-road vehicles with all-metal bodies on the Sadko chassis, but those cars are very heavy, with problematic engines - without a reduction gear and huge expense fuel cannot be driven off-road. The notorious "Tiger" on an armored personnel carrier with 7 tons of live weight and an electronically controlled diesel engine is also not a competitor. And the brainchild of Vyacheslav travels freely and economically everywhere - on the highway at 80 km / h it consumes only about 13.5 liters. It took a year and a half to build the car, but three years have passed since that time! And it is surprising that the car is still almost unknown not only in the region, but even in Krasnokamensk itself - Vyacheslav does not advertise it, almost never drives into the city. So the BMSh should become an All-Russian premiere for this Trans-Baikal legend. Among those rare people who know, there were those who wanted to buy this off-road cruiser for good money and even offered Lexus LX instead. Vyacheslav refuses, but is ready to consider an order for the construction of similar or other interesting cars... One such new project is already maturing and promises another exclusive, but the author has not yet covered it.

Made by the author for a special order. The future owner wished to make some kind of crossing of a regular UAZA with a gas-66 and add to this composition more wheels and a few gadgets for better off-road cross-country ability. The model of such an all-terrain vehicle has undeniable advantages due to the bridges, which are virtually indestructible even under the most terrible operating conditions. In addition, they have blocking and swapping, which is also very important.

A very controversial project, even in my far from technical point of view, but nevertheless it was born.

Consider the mechanisms and materials used in this all-terrain vehicle:
1) engine internal combustion left from the UAZ.
2) Manual gearbox from Gas -66
3) Front and rear axle from the same Gaz-66
4) The author used A-trans with dimensions of 1300 by 700 as wheels.

Let's consider in detail the most basic manipulations and improvements of the all-terrain vehicle.

First you need to familiarize yourself with the frame of the structure, after all, there are two completely different cars both in terms of characteristics and class, they had to combine into one indestructible composition on a new frame.

After the construction of the frame, the author began to install the basic elements of any all-terrain vehicle, and cars too.

In order to better understand the device of the all-terrain vehicle, as well as understand the stability of the machine, you need to look at the location of the engine. After all, it is the all-terrain vehicle engine that carries the bulk of the entire structure.

For a comfortable ride on bumps and bumps, as well as for greater durability and reliability of the structure, it is necessary to reduce the load on the frame and axles, and this can only be achieved by installing a shock absorption system.

Therefore, I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the photo attached below, in which you can see in detail the rear spring mount:


Unfortunately, the front spring mount in the photo is seen rather poorly, but best quality the author did not provide. I can only say that the author had problems regarding the difference in width, however, the solution was about the same as for the rear spring, so the mount looks almost the same.

As for the wheels, everything is fine. The selected rubber is probably only inferior in weight to the best tires from TREKOL, but thanks to these tires we can say that everything will be in order with the axles and they will last a long time. And because of the TREKOL, there is an increased load on the bridges, therefore, choosing reliability, the author decided to abandon them.

It looks very impressive and the difference is noticeable both in appearance and in the qualities of cross-country ability.


What are the advantages, besides the interesting design and impressive appearance, does this model of an all-terrain vehicle have?

One of the author's good ideas was the decision to use side boxes, which can be seen on the sides of the frame, at the bottom. These side boxes are hollow inside, that is, they are filled with air. This was necessary so that the all-terrain vehicle could move not only on land, but also on water. That is, it is these boxes that provide the buoyancy of the all-terrain vehicle. Actually, thanks to this solution, thinner wheels could be used than TREKOL.

As already mentioned, the main feature of the all-terrain vehicle in reliable and non-kill bridges from Gaz-66, their excellent qualities (as well as the build quality) are proved by the fact that during the year of intensive operation of the all-terrain vehicle, no problems were found regarding the bridges of the all-terrain vehicle.

The Land Cruiser looks like a child's play compared to the creation of Krasnokamensk resident Vyacheslav Zolotukhin. His SUV, if you can call it that, reaches 5.8 meters in length and 2.3 meters in width. It is even difficult to imagine that the GAZ-66 was taken as the basis for this giant.

Vyacheslav Zolotukhin is well acquainted with Japanese SUVs. In the 90s, he even ferried these cars from the Far East. He had more than one SUV at his disposal. made in Japan... Over time, the car enthusiast wanted something more than standard factory designs. Vyacheslav wanted to get a car of a fundamentally new level that would correspond to his own ideas about capacity, comfort, cross-country ability and reliability. There was a need to independently build one. The achievements of both the Japanese and the domestic auto industry were used as a basis.

The GAZ-66 was used as a base for the development of an SUV. This choice was made quite deliberately. However, this Soviet model also has its drawbacks. These include a lousy gearbox and engine, and general layout machines with a heavy engine and cab. The front axle in terms of weight distribution was not the best solution. But the GAZ-66 also has its advantages. This is especially true for military vehicles produced before 1975. Then the cars were made conscientiously. A light army truck was designed, with the calculation of the possibility of landing from the air.

One of the main advantages of the GAZ-66 is a flexible and durable frame made of 6 mm steel, as well as strong bridges. However, in the process of "civilian" operation, another drawback appeared - the engagement of the front wheels. But this problem can be easily eliminated, just enough to have some skills.

The inspiration for the design was the bare chassis of the GAZ-66 without an engine, cab and gearbox. The skeleton of the machine was ready. The wheelbase has been completely preserved. To create the body of the future giant, parts of Japanese medium-sized trucks... As an engine, the master used a unit from the five-ton giant Hino. The volume of the engine was 7.5 liters. The gearbox is 6-speed. Vyacheslav left the distribution box with his own, from the 66th, only replaced domestic bearings with imported counterparts. After that, the noise level in the car decreased noticeably.

A huge engine compartment is hidden under a huge hood. Vyacheslav borrowed the air purification system from KamAZ. The designer also decided to add a forked exhaust system. This is necessary in order to use only two compact cans instead of one huge muffler. The tank, with a volume of 180 liters, is positioned inconspicuously in front of the rear axle and is additionally equipped with protection.

Fitting the power section of the car also required significant changes: the frame cross members were redone and the fasteners were replaced. One frame had to be cut at the edges. From the point of view of the correct distribution of the load, the weighty diesel was combined as far back as possible.

This, in turn, favorably influenced the overall design of the body. It turned out to be quite traditional for all types of jeep: with a short overhang and a bridge brought forward. To lower the center of gravity, the bulky engine was positioned as far away as possible. For this, the pallet had to be additionally modified.
From the inside, the interior of an SUV looks more like a cruise cabin.

The cockpit from Isuzu Elf was taken as a basis. The luggage and rear section had to be borrowed from the Noah minivan. To dock the rear part with the cab, it was necessary to expand the dimensions with inserts and make the original rear window. The front ensemble of the car is no less interesting. For the manufacture of the wings, tank GAZ - 3307 were used. The radiator grille of the SUV is assembled from two Prado grilles. The headlights had to be borrowed from the Delica.

Take the steering wheel from a Honda passenger car. The controls turned out to be faster and sharper than those of the trucks.
The "cabin" of the SUV can easily accommodate three people. At the front is a Hiace seat that can rotate and fold into a table.

Both bumpers of the SUV were custom made from metal. Vyacheslav does not like plastic and trusts only metal. All welding seams in the SUV's structure remain invisible. In the original version, the front doors were equipped with special cutouts for the wheel arches. They are now solid.

The wheels of the car were redesigned, as a result of which the outreach increased by 10 cm. The tires were supplied from the "Tiger". It is lighter and smaller than the native one from the GAZ-66. The front hubs have become detachable. Vyacheslav used a design of the type of threaded couplings.
For reliability, the body is planted on 12 supports. Each support is made of three rubber pads.

domestic production, the birth of which took place in the Soviet Union. Already the legendary GAZ-66 has a really incredible, very high cross-country ability.

This is ensured by the special design of the wheels and, without exaggeration, the famous limited-slip differentials. This car, no doubt, will be interesting for many skillful motorists who cannot imagine their life without a variety of experiments for more than one year.

Why tuning GAZ 66 with your own hands is so popular

Alteration or, in other words, tuning the GAZ-66 with your own hands is today a very interesting and relatively affordable option for upgrading or even creating your own all-terrain vehicle. The car, nicknamed "Shishiga", provides many off-road enthusiasts with excellent opportunities to "ride" in places where driving, to put it mildly, is not possible.

In addition, every extreme lover strives to create his own all-terrain vehicle, the way he imagines it. You can realize these visions in metal, forming a completely exclusive car with your own hands.

Tuning GAZ 66 Partizan


All kinds of modifications to the GAZ 66, and the modernization of other cars - an occupation that requires patience, skills and, of course, money. Sumy already depends on the volume and quality of the work performed. A striking example of the original tuning of the domestic off-road all-terrain vehicle, known as "shishiga", is the project called GAZ-66 Partizan.

The car that turned out looks very similar to the foreign Hummer, but it is based on the GAZ-66 chassis, which can withstand heavy loads on the off-road. The chassis is supplemented with native gas units - an engine, suspension, gearbox and razdatka.

Thanks to the engine displaced backwards, the bonnet line is kept low. The salon consists of two cabins "shishigi", the trunk and the hood are made of fiberglass. The cabin is glazed with standard glass. The driver's seat is very comfortable, the controls are in their usual places.

Thanks to the displacement of the engine, the weight distribution of the all-terrain vehicle was improved, the center of gravity was also lowered and the handling and stability were increased. Four people can easily fit in the cab of such a car. In the middle of the car, like the Hammer, there is a transmission tunnel. The dashboard is homemade, the indicators are simple and nondescript.

The purpose of the car is practical, there was no task to specifically create comfortable conditions. In addition to the usual copying of the Hammer, the craftsmen also made their own changes. There are samples in which controlled - and. the rear ones turn, and the front ones. This is another advantage of this off-road car.

Tuning the GAZ 66 engine: no chip tuning needed

As a rule, the modification of the presented car model with a 200 kg V-shaped engine ZMZ-66. However, let's return to our days and take a closer look at tuning the GAZ 66 engine.

When modifying this car, most often, they are limited to installing an MTZ engine, a D.245 diesel engine on it (or altering it, as in the video) or carry out the procedure for bracing the rings.

However, this is, let's say, the "simplest" option, if there is a desire to carry out solid tuning and install a relatively economical engine, then you can safely use Isuzu with a volume of 4 - 4.5 liters, used. In addition, the ZIL-130 very kindly "saved" for us the gearbox with the fifth gear, full synchronization and the necessary spare parts.

There were cases that the craftsmen completed the hydraulic coupling from the Shtaer-560 for the car, but there was no particular need for this. It is impossible to conduct GAZ 66 without a computer in the car. Therefore, they are limited to the modifications indicated above.

Any modernization of a car should be aimed at eliminating various kinds of problems and bringing it to a state of perfection. One of the main tasks in the finalization of the "shishiga" is to eliminate noise and dust inside the cabin, as a result of which, all the insides should be carefully insulated.

For this, it is carried out, during the implementation of which you can use such materials as vibroplast Silver, gerband SFP, visomat PB-2. You can also supply a soft 200 liter DVD player.


Tuning the dashboard GAZ 66: add brightness

The dashboard of the presented car model is quite good, it does not need to be changed. The only thing that can be done is to complement it with beautiful lighting. To do this, you need LEDs as backlight diodes. It is better to choose with white light, because they are brighter and more popular than blue light. With LEDs, a good level of backlighting and significantly improved readability can be achieved dashboard.

First you need to unscrew the panel screws and remove the cover, dashboard and glass. The arrows should be removed carefully. According to the recommendations of experts, you do not need to pull the device; you should remove it by gently shaking it in different directions.

Carrying out such a GAZ 66, you need to follow the sequence of installing the LEDs. A popular way is to mount an LED in place of the factory lamp. This allows, in the end, to create excellent quality and high reliability. LED backlight... Then you need to mount the backlight, check the polarity and install the panel in its original place.

Alternatively, using special programs on a computer, you can create your own stencil on devices and install it in them. Such a minor innovation will beautifully complement the overall modernized interior of the car. Useful improvements

  1. Surely many are interested in the question of how to paint a GAZ 66 with their own hands beautifully and efficiently? It is difficult to imagine, but there is nothing complicated in this procedure. First you need to get permission from the traffic police, and then you can proceed directly to the process. For convenience, it is better to use warm garage in the winter season or, if it is warm outside, you can simply in the fresh air. You need to purchase several spray cans of the selected color from the car dealer. The following combinations of three colors are popular: green (it is as the main one) - 5-6 pieces, black and dirty yellow - four pieces. You will need sandpaper 0 and three cylinders of primer. Let's get to work: we clean "suspicious" and rusty places with a sandpaper, you can first be larger than zero, then zero should be applied. Next, you need to use the "soil". Then all this should be dried, degreased with acetone and allowed to dry. Then we start painting. First, you need to use the green paint completely, in several layers. Then black and yellow. Choose a drawing at your discretion. It all depends on your imagination (of course, you won't be able to create 3-D tuning the first time, but patience and dedication help to achieve a lot).
  2. As an option for upgrading a GAZ 66 car, you can use an interesting contraption - a speedometer twist. With this device, you can independently increase the mileage of the car. It must be connected via the diagnostic connector of the vehicle via the CAN bus. This is the most modern device for cheating mileage.

The advantages of this device:

  • speed readings are recorded in all service blocks - the increase in mileage cannot be determined for maintenance;
  • operational connection using a standard connector for vehicle diagnostics;
  • the winding speed is up to 5000 km / h. You can also quickly increase the mileage;
  • the connection process does not require intervention in the wiring;
  • connection is made in the car.

From 1964 to 1995. During this period, production was massive, prototypes were made in 1962, and the last ones were released in 1999. The total number is 965,941 vehicles in various modifications. The machines of the first years of production were intended for the Armed Forces of the country, were used in the airborne, border and some other types of troops.

Subsequently, they found application in other industries. Some of the cars were exported abroad. has established itself as a reliable and unpretentious car, which explains such a long production time. On the basis of them, various all-terrain vehicles and other special equipment are made.

GAZ-66 is a four-wheeled truck capable of moving in conditions bad roads and off-road. The design features ensured high cross-country ability. All four wheels were driven, the differentials of both axles were self-locking. The car had an increased ground clearance, and the air pressure in the wheels was regulated from the driver's seat, for which a compressor was installed, which was driven by the engine.

Classic truck GAZ 66


Special design wheel rims allowed to bleed air and inflate tires on the go. The car was completed pre-heater and hydraulic power steering. Each car had a tarpaulin bunk, if necessary, it was suspended on special hooks in the cab. On some of the machines, a winch with a force of 3500 kg and a cable length of 50 meters was installed.

It was driven by a power take-off. When driving on a good road front axle could be turned off. The cab was tilted forward to service the engine. There were two versions of the platform: for the wooden one, all the sides were opened, except for the front one, for the metal one - only the rear one. The latter had three longitudinal benches for passengers.

A V-shaped engine with 8 cylinders was installed on the car. Engine capacity - 4.25 liters, power - 120 liters. sec., torque 284.5 N * m. The checkpoint had synchronizers in 3rd and 4th gears. The winch is driven by a power take-off.
The car is well balanced, the difference in the load on the front and rear axles is negligible.

Variants of all-terrain vehicles based on GAZ 66


This feature allowed the Airborne Forces to drop the car by parachute, the landing took place on almost all wheels at the same time, without distortions.
In the nineties, cars were massively written off from the army. Those who purchased them often altered the car to fit their needs, sometimes the changes were significant, so a lot of homemade products based on the GAZ-66 appeared.

Car conversion options

They could be minimal, for example, original drawings were applied to the cab and body using airbrushing or a film with a selected picture was glued. More serious changes are possible, involving the replacement of the cab and body. And the most discerning owners produce almost full replacement units, only the frame and axles with wheels remain from the original machine, and sometimes they are also modified.


The choice of GAZ-66 for modernization is explained primarily by its high cross-country ability. You can make an SUV out of a car, in comparison with which even the best foreign analogues no longer seem so wonderful. It is no coincidence that the author chose the GAZ-66 as a prototype for his SUV.

Were taken into account positive traits machines, the main of which were a solid frame and axles with self-locking differentials. The cab, body, engine, gearbox were removed from the car.

After disassembly, only the frame with bridges remained, and then assembly began. The engine from the Japanese truck Hino, diesel, in-line, with 6 cylinders and a volume of 7.5 liters, is supplemented by an air purification system from KamAZ.

Transfer case remained, but the bearings were replaced with imported ones, which led to a decrease in noise. And the 6-speed gearbox is also taken from Hino. After the re-equipment, the car went smoothly, it could drive on rather steep slopes, move on a layer of snow up to one meter thick. There is no strong noise and vibrations in the cabin, the SUV is very good in operation.
