Step 14. Assembling the steering knuckle

Required tool:

Litol-24, 0.5 kg per side; SHRUS-4M, 50-75 grams;

Step 15. Installing the ball joint

We put a ball joint on the semi-axle, while making sure its orientation is correct.
The bottom of the ball joint is determined very simply: there are three holes on the flange on the bottom side, and two on the top. We recommend that you notice the orientation of the steering knuckle housings during disassembly, for example, by punching or paint.
We draw your attention to this, since the knot is assembled in any combinations and it is easy to make a mistake.

Step 16. Lubricate the king pins

Required tool:

Step 17. Tightening the clamping sleeves

Alternately increasing the torque by 2-3 kgf * m, using torque wrench (periodically checking the symmetry about the ends, the deviation should not exceed 0.2 mm), tighten the clamping sleeves with a final torque of 20-25 kgf * m.

UAZ Patriot is a creation of the Russian car industry, whose heart is in the city of Ulyanovsk. Of course, in some ways the domestic UAZ Patriot SUV is inferior to foreign ones, but in some it is not.

One problem is that a mechanism such as the steering knuckle does not receive enough attention from the factory. In its design, there is not that little, but practically no lubrication at all, which leads to unfavorable consequences. The actual service life of the part depends not only on the presence in the product lubricant but also on the quality of these lubricants. The lubricant must also perform a protective function, protecting important structural elements from water, dust and sand. Thus, in order to lubricate the steering knuckles on the UAZ Patriot SUV, it is necessary to use the well-known Litol-24 grease. One device will require about 400 grams of Litola-24. In the process of lubricating the steering knuckle, it is necessary to apply lubricant to the CV joint. For SHRUS it is necessary to use SHRUS-4M grease, which needs about 100 grams for one side.

To thoroughly lubricate the steering knuckle and CV joint, these parts must be removed, the inner filling must be cleaned if necessary, and new material must be applied. To carry out the work, you must perform the following steps:

Before you start repairing the steering knuckle, you need to familiarize yourself with the features of its implementation.

  1. If Nyloc nuts are installed, they will definitely need to be replaced, as they have a special coating that prevents them from unscrewing and loosening the clamp. After screwing on the nuts, this coating is destroyed.
  2. Do not put the car on wheels if at least one drive shaft is disconnected from the hub, as this can lead to deformation or destruction of the hub bearing. If it is necessary to move the machine a short distance, the shaft must be returned to the hub and secured with a nut.
  3. Depending on the car model and the year of its production, the UAZ fist has two modifications, in one of which the hubs are solid, and in the other they are hollow, which is determined by the presence of a hole.

Before proceeding with the repair, the following manipulations are carried out.

  1. The car is put on the hand brake.
  2. Under rear wheels put stops that will prevent the machine from moving.
  3. The front of the car is lifted with a jack or winch and fixed on stops.

Only after making sure that the front of the machine is securely fastened and that it is impossible to move or break off the stops, you can start removing the wheel.

The process of dismantling the wheel and brakes

To remove the wheel, it is necessary to carry out the operations in the following sequence.

  1. The cap is removed from the wheel hub, the R-shaped bracket is removed, and the locking head is dismantled. On the drive shaft, loosen the nut that connects it to the hub. After that I remove the front wheel.
  2. If the car model is equipped with ABS system, there is a sensor on the wheel that must be removed.
  3. The nut that secures the drive shaft to the front suspension hub is twisted.
  4. The brake caliper is attached to the steering knuckle with two bolts, which must be unscrewed and disconnected from the brake disc the caliper, after which it is tied to a spring on the front suspension.
  5. Before proceeding with the removal of the brake disc, it is necessary to note its position in relation to the suspension hub. The line can be applied with chalk, but it is better to use white paint so that the line is not overwritten during repair work. Only then unscrew the fastening screw and remove the brake disc.

Fist lubrication

To facilitate the process of dismantling from the steering knuckle, it is necessary to use a special device with which the suspension springs are compressed and fixed. For this, cables are used, for example, as on tool 0903 AF. The procedure for compressing and fixing the springs is as follows:

  • there are two holes in the upper part of the rack, one of which is inserted with a cable;
  • then steering column turns and a second cable is inserted into the second hole;
  • free ends of the cables cling to the lower edge of the cup;
  • the upper ends, inserted into the rack, are fixed by screwing bolts with a diameter of 6 mm into the holes.

The steering knuckle is designed to change the direction of the vehicle by increasing pressure on the steering levers, which ensures a change in the angle of the wheels.

This part of the vehicle is one of the most significant. The steering knuckle (UAZ, Volkswagen, BMW - it doesn't matter) is the basis for the hub and is attached to other parts due to Usually two types of parts are distinguished: with a hub and with a spindle.

How to make the right choice?

When buying on the market, you should pay attention to the seat where the steering knuckle bearing is installed (the inner race should sit tightly without a hammer), as well as appearance details: whether there is corrosion, whether there are cracks or bends. Any crack later can turn into a very difficult problem to solve.

Replacement and repair

  2. Unscrew the trunnion fastening.

After replacing the fist, the actions should be performed in the reverse order, not forgetting to put the rotation limiter in place. For repair, the steering knuckle should be clamped in a vise and disassembled by unscrewing the cuff mounting bolts, a stop bolt with a locknut. Next, the cuff clip and the felt seal are removed. At the end, the ball seal is removed.

The most difficult thing is over, what is left is what requires attention. The ball joint is carefully removed. This is roughly how the repair and replacement of the steering knuckle takes place.

Replacement of pivots

There are also parts that need to be replaced from time to time - these are the pivots. To replace them, you will have to remove the steering knuckle and clamp it in a vice. After that, using a mandrel, knock out the pivot bushings and thoroughly clean the passages for lubrication and for a replaceable spare part in the fist.

After the mandrel, new bushings are installed so that the holes in them coincide with the holes on the fist, and the open ends look towards the beam fixed to the front axle.

At the same time, both bushings are unrolled to the required diameter. After that, the bushings are cleaned and a thin layer of grease is applied. Then, after lubricating the O-rings and ducts in the knuckle bosses, the rings themselves are installed.

Possible damage

Despite the fact that the steering knuckle is one of the most "long-lasting" parts of a car, its damage is just a matter of time. Sometimes the protective casing can crack, giving access to dust and sand, so it is worth checking its integrity from time to time.

If it fails, the best solution would be to replace it. Often you can see oil drips on the steering knuckle, indicating that the oil seal / axle shaft joint is loose. Here you just need to change the oil seal for a better one. Such problems are common in vehicles that have been involved in an accident.

How to protect against wear

Those car owners who recently bought a UAZ often hear unpleasant sounds when turning the steering wheel, as if metal rubbing against metal without any lubrication. This is often the case. How can you protect your fists on a domestic car? This is where the ubiquitous lithol comes to the rescue.
