Since 1997, Toyota, Honda and General Motors have been selling electric cars in limited quantities in California. And if Honda and GM developed their models from scratch, then Toyota took the ready-made Toyota RAV4 crossover as a basis. In 2002, GM and Honda vehicles were seized and destroyed, but Japanese company part of cars Toyota RAV4 EV still left. You can learn more about this action by watching K. Payne's film.

First generation Toyota The RAV4 EV was equipped with nickel-metal hydride batteries, which extended the range to 180 kilometers. Its top speed was 120 km / h. Not bad considering the car weighs around 1,800 kilograms. Several copies of the Toyota RAV4 EV have survived to this day, and are even in service. According to one of the owners, the originally installed batteries withstood a mileage of 230 thousand kilometers. The result is excellent.

In the spring of this year, we signed an agreement. One of the main directions of this cooperation will be the joint production of electric cars. This will happen as follows: Toyota provides a platform with basic mechanical components, and Tesla, as a true connoisseur of electric vehicles, will manufacture electrical circuit, which includes an electric motor and batteries.

New generation Toyota RAV4 EV

A striking example of the new partnership is the new generation Toyota RAV4 EV electric crossover, which was announced just a couple of weeks ago. The second generation continued the concept of the first, borrowing the architecture and chassis from its gasoline counterpart, the sales of which, by the way, are scheduled for 2011. The Toyota RAV4 EV itself will appear only in 2012. Until that time, 35 copies will be subjected to various tests and trials.

Tesla Motors has been able to optimize and reduce the weight of energy-intensive rechargeable batteries, thanks to which the electric Toyota RAV4 EV weighs only 100 kilograms more than the traditional petrol version. The power reserve was left at medium for today

Under the hood of the 2013 RAV4 EV is a 154-horsepower electric motor that propels the SUV from 0 to 100 km / h in just 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 136.8 km / h. The electric motor developed by Tesla is based on dynamic performance comparable to a gasoline six-cylinder engine.

When Sport Mode is activated, the electric car accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.0 seconds, and the maximum achievable speed is 160 km / h.

The RAV4 EV 2013 can travel about 160 km on one battery charge. The electric vehicle belongs to the SUV class and has front-wheel drive... All-wheel drive models of electric vehicles, Toyota has no plans to release yet.

The Toyota RAV4 EV is a collaboration between Japanese and American manufacturers Toyota Motor and Tesla Motors. The second generation of the all-electric SUV went on sale in 2012, competing with similar models from other companies.

Exterior Toyota RAV4 EV

Toyota RAV4 EV electric all-wheel drive SUV has a typical appearance for this type of car, but with significant differences. The powerful and heavyweight 4574 x 1816 x 1816 mm body is designed to improve aerodynamic performance, which is only 0.30 Cd for a total weight of 1828 kg.

The decrease in the drag coefficient of the Toyota RAV4 EV compared to its gasoline counterpart, which has it equal to 0.34 Cd, was facilitated by a new radiator grille on front bumper, more aerodynamic mirrors and a deeper rear spoiler, as well as clever underbody trim.

Also in the electric truck, the battery consumption has been reduced due to the use of LED low beam headlights with high beams of halogen projectors, LED daytime running lights running lights which dim to side lights and LED tail lights.

High seating position, low fairing and sloping bonnet and long side windows make it easy to check the side lanes for good driver visibility.

Toyota RAV4 EV interior

Toyota RAV4 EV is roomy and spacious. It accommodates 5 people and a load of up to 1030 liters. Due to the fact that the backs rear seats reclining, and the 60/40 split-seat seats slide forward and backward, it is easy to optimize passenger and cargo capacity in an electric vehicle.

The interior of the car is decorated simply and discreetly, but conveniently and technologically - textile 2-color upholstery of six-speed adjustable driver's and passengers' seats with armrests and headrests, a compartment for small items opposite the front passenger seat, digital sensors, a center stack with an eight-inch color LCD touch display, no knobs and an unusual gear shifting mechanism borrowed from the Prius.

On the sides of the digital speedometer are two small gauges. The left one is responsible for the vehicle health indicators, while the right one can scroll through the screens to show the efficiency of the trip and assess the driver's level of driving.

The large touchscreen contains audio controls, a backup camera, a navigation system that can find charging stations and the Toyota Entune app system.

Specifications

The Toyota RAV4 EV is powered by a 115 kW (154 hp) electric motor with 218 Nm of torque in normal mode and 273 Nm of torque. sport mode powered by lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 30-41.8 kWh developed by Tesla.

Note, unlike other electrical appliances, the RAV4 EV has two charging modes: Normal and Extended. Normal charging of a 30 kWh battery from a 220 V home network occurs in 44 hours and allows an electric car to travel up to 160 km, an extended battery charging with a capacity of 41.8 kWh occurs in 52 hours, making it possible for a car to travel up to 200 km. Fast charging at special stations will replenish the energy supply in 6-8 hours.

Toyota RAV4 EV has 2 driving modes: sports (acceleration from 0 to 96 km / h in 7 seconds at maximum speed 166 km / h) and normal (acceleration from 0 to 96 km / h in 8.6 seconds at a maximum speed of 137 km / h).

Toyota promises to start selling both cars in 2012. And next year will be spent on testing the collected samples. At the last auto show in Los Angeles, the company presented the serial RAV4 EV (Electric Vehicle). By the start of testing, 35 of these vehicles will be ready.

Tesla will help us

So far, unfortunately, no technical details of the new product have been disclosed. It is only known that the car was created in collaboration with Tesla - this is stated in every press release dedicated to the RAV4 EV, the name of the American company even appeared on the nameplates and on the dashboard of the crossover. "The body of the Japanese CUV with the stuffing of the Tesla Roadster sports car", - so they say about the car in the American media. How much such a definition corresponds to reality is difficult to say.

It is not clear what such cooperation gives the Japanese, besides PR. After all, they have long learned how to make electric motors, control electronics, and recuperation systems themselves - all this is in the same hybrid cars. Both companies do not have their own battery production, Toyota and Tesla use the products of suppliers (for example, in the RAV4, apparently, there are Sanyo batteries), but for Toyota the components should clearly cost less due to the volume of purchases.

First generation

Either way, it's hard to say that technology has gone a long way since the first RAV4 EV was introduced. Yes, this is the second generation of the electric crossover!

From 1997 to 2003, approximately 1,500 first-generation Toyota RAV4s with electric motors were sold or leased in California. Half of them are still on the move. Equipped with a RAV4 EV, first lead, then nickel-metal hydride batteries and could travel about 100 miles on a single charge.

The service life of one battery was up to 230,000 kilometers. I wonder what these Toyota cars left them to their owners, while a similar General Motors project - the GM EV1 electric car - was leased at that time exclusively and at the end of the lease term, all cars were seized by the company from the owners, despite the latter's protests. Toyota, therefore, was already confident in the quality and operational characteristics their electric vehicles.

Filling

What have the Japanese achieved now, with the help of American specialists? The new RAV4 EV will have traveled ... the same 100 miles on a single charge. And this despite the fact that now much larger and lighter lithium-based batteries are used. True, the press releases say that such a mileage is ensured in all weather conditions. In addition, the new RAV4 EV is clearly more powerful than the old one - representatives of the company say that the electric car "will provide almost the same dynamics when accelerating to 100 km / h as a gasoline one."

The RAV4 EV isn't just a crossover that replaces the internal combustion engine with an electric motor. Toyota designers did a lot of work on the car. For example, we tried to reduce the weight of the donor as much as possible, making even the suspension and steering parts lighter. Some of the components had to be moved so that the placement of the battery compartment in the rear of the car did not disturb the axle weight distribution so much. As a result, the RAV4 EV is only 100 kg heavier than the V6-powered RAV4, and the handling is as close to a regular car as possible. Alas, nothing is reported about off-road qualities cars. It can be assumed that there is simply nothing to report - for sure the car has become front-wheel drive, and the ground clearance has decreased due to the radiators of the battery compartment located under the bottom.

Knowing what the Lexus RX450h is like off-road, in which the rear axle is driven only by an electric motor, we can say with confidence that the RAV4 UM is an exclusively city car. And how can you get out of the city if the battery charge is enough for 160 km?

Outwardly, the novelty also cannot be confused with a gasoline analogue - the bumpers and optics have changed, the car is painted in a special color. Probably, "green" cars should look like white seals: modest and defenseless.

Future

The technical characteristics of the new items will be known only next year. Then it will become clear on what terms it will be sold. And this is one of the main questions, the answer to which will make it clear how close we are to the mass appearance on the streets of silent cars with zero exhaust.

And Toyota has already announced its green plans. During 2011 and 2012, seven completely new products will enter the market. hybrid cars- this is not counting the new generations of old models. So far, only one of them is known - a minivan based on the Prius. In 2012, there will be two electric vehicles - the aforementioned RAV4 and iQ, as well as the Prius plug-in hybrid. And in 2015, or even earlier, the first production Toyota fuel cell will go on sale.
