The task of the electric power steering (EUR) is to reduce the torque on the steering wheel, which makes it possible to drive more comfortably. works only in some moments when the steering column is moving. The power steering motor generates the required amount of torque, which depends on the steering effort.

The torque on the steering wheel is measured using a special sensor and is subsequently transmitted to the amplifier control unit, which controls the operation of the amplifier motor. Structurally, the electric amplifier consists of one unit, which simplifies its replacement and repair. On the other hand, foreign automakers rarely use it, giving preference to hydraulic boosters.

Normally, the electric booster should work at low and medium engine speeds, erroneous operation of the electric booster at high speed can lead to the car hitting the roadside or ditches, colliding with bumpers and highway fences.

Symptoms of EUR malfunctions

The main symptom of a malfunction in the operation of the electric booster is the operation of the indicator on the instrument panel, the indicator looks like a steering wheel with an exclamation mark. Depending on the situation, the EUR turns off automatically, if this did not happen, then this can be done manually in order to prevent accidental non-standard operation and the occurrence of a critical situation. To disconnect, remove the fuse located to the left of the steering wheel.

Automatic shutdown of the power steering system is possible in the following cases:

  1. Reducing the voltage in the network below the permissible rating
  2. No signal from the speed sensor
  3. Excessive engine speed above normal

The latter causes are caused by faults in the sensor system or damaged cables and can be easily resolved by replacing the sensors or repairing the circuits.

In some cases, the malfunction may be located in the EUR itself. When the ignition is turned on, a failure occurs in the diagnostic system of the EUR and therefore it turns off. If the car is under warranty, it is better to carry out repairs at an auto center or at a selected auto center service center since the amplifier unit itself is quite expensive, its price is about 11-13 thousand rubles.

If a malfunction in the operation of the EUR is caused by the speed sensor coming out of the standing position, then the repair will be much easier, it can be easily replaced on your own, if you have time and desire.

The speed sensor transmits information about the vehicle speed to the EUR, on the basis of which the steering force is calculated. If the car is moving at low speeds, in this case, the effort on the steering wheel will be maximum, and with increasing speed, the effort will decrease.

If the speed sensor comes out of a standing position, then incorrect information is sent to the EUR control unit and therefore the electric amplifier turns off and the malfunction indication on the car panel turns on.

Dismantling the electric booster

If during the operation of the car the EUR malfunction indication is triggered, and while the car is moving, the steering wheel turn is accompanied by jerks and there is no smoothness of the turn, this indicates problems with the electric power steering. First, you need to check the fuse, sometimes it can fail or oxidize, which will cause interruptions in the operation of the EUR. It is also necessary to check the speed sensor, which can be done at a car service. If all these elements are in good working order, then the fault is in the EUR and it must be replaced.

First you need to dismantle the faulty unit. To do this, you need a set of keys, Phillips and flat screwdrivers, rags. Before repairing, it is necessary to disconnect the battery (its negative pole) and set the wheels straight.

The next step is to remove the steering column switches. To do this, we disconnect all plugs for connecting wires and buses from dashboard... We also remove the cover that turns off the sound signal by applying force on ourselves. Disconnect the plugs of the two wires from the switch cover.

The ignition lock can also be removed for easy access. We unscrew three self-tapping screws with a Phillips screwdriver or screwdriver and remove this element. Using a knob and a 24 spanner wrench, unscrew the nut from the steering column mount and remove the steering wheel with light movements from side to side.

Before removal, it is necessary to mark its location with a marker relative to the shaft spline. We also unscrew the transverse partition of the instrument panel. Thus, we will gain access to the EUR control unit and we can easily disconnect the plug of the wires from the unit. We also disconnect the plug from the steering column switches.

Unscrew the bracket mount and lower steering on the floor of the car. Using a 13 key, unscrew the mount cardan shaft to the steering shaft. The mount is fixed with a bolt, which is carefully removed, and the terminal clamp is opened with an ordinary flat screwdriver. Then you can remove the intermediate shaft.

During disassembly, it is advisable to mark the positions of the shafts, steering column, gears relative to each other, which will further simplify the assembly of units and mechanisms.

Replacing the electric booster

After the necessary repair or replacement of the electric amplifier, it is necessary to assemble steering column, which is done in reverse order. First, we install the lower hinge on the pinion shaft, connect the steering column shaft to the intermediate propeller shaft.

Next, we remove the nut and bolt that tightens the intermediate shaft, disconnect the upper and lower hinges. After installing the lower joint in place, turn the steering wheel shaft until the bolt hole in the upper joint and the lower part of the shaft coincide.

We connect the hinges and tighten them together with a bolt. We connect the pads of tires and wires to the mountings, and then we install all the removed elements: the steering column switches, the ignition switch and, last of all, we install the steering wheel cover and the panel.

Thus, you can change the inoperative electric power steering unit yourself without any particular difficulties in a garage or car workshop. This will make driving more comfortable.

One of the most problem areas Lada Priora has an electric power steering. That is why repairing an electric power steering - frequent problem faced by the owners of Priora. If you find that the EUR does not work on the Priora, then immediately contact a specialist or take care of the repair yourself. Most often, Priora's electric power steering has two causes of malfunction.

Interesting fact! The electric power steering was invented and introduced into the car back in 1990 in Japan at the factories of the Toyota auto concern.

How to determine that the EUR needs repair

The electric amplifier does not work on the Priora very often. He refuses to work on both new cars and used cars.

If there is a problem with the electric booster on the dashboard, a yellow button lights up, on which a steering wheel is painted with an exclamation mark. This button notifies of malfunctions or refusal to work with the electric power steering.

You can drive a car without the help of an electric booster. To do this, you just need to pull out the EUR fuse, which is located to the left of the steering wheel. The faults of the EUR on the Priora should not scare you, since this malfunction can be eliminated even on its own.

The main malfunctions of the electric power steering and their causes

The electric power steering on the Priora refuses for the following reasons:

1.When the ignition is turned on, the EUR does not pass self-control and turns itself off so as not to interfere with the driver and not create an emergency situation on the road. In this case, repairs will be expensive.

2. Electric power steering on Priora also does not work due to a malfunction of the speed sensor. The EUR scans the vehicle speed from the speedometer, which receives data from the speed sensor. When the sensor breaks down, it starts to give incorrect information. Then the EUR spontaneously turns off, since it does not know the exact speed of the car. In this case, the repair of the electric amplifier is carried out by replacing the sensor.

If the electric power steering does not work on the Priora, a blinking error on the dashboard will immediately let you know about it.

How to repair a EUR with your own hands

The Priora electric power steering has several causes of malfunction and one way of solving them. For renovation you will need:

  1. 8 and 13 mm head
  2. Ratchet or crank
  3. Extension
  4. Hammer
  5. Chisel

EUR on Lada Priora: malfunctions and remedies

First you need to remove the steering column cover, then remove the ignition switch and wheel... In the case of the EUR on the Priora, the malfunctions should be eliminated step by step.

Further with the help 8 mm sockets and ratchets unscrew and remove contact group... It must be completely removed from the shaft so that it does not interfere. Next you need disconnect the power wires from the EUR control unit. Each plug has its own lock, so you need to work carefully so as not to damage them.

Then you can unscrew the nuts securing the EUR to the body. There are two nuts at the front and two at the bottom. When all the nuts are unscrewed, the EUR must be removed from the steering rack shaft. We change it to a new one and assemble the mechanism in the reverse order.

Do-it-yourself electric power steering Priora repair will significantly save your budget.

Rules for the operation of the electric power steering, we extend the life of the EUR

EUR Priora often does not work due to its improper use. In order for the electric amplifier to not fail on the Priora, simple rules should be avoided:

  • Do not leave the steering wheel in extreme positions for a long time. When the steering wheel is in the extreme position, it is not allowed to start abruptly.
  • When parking or turning a car, you do not need to hold the steering wheel in the extreme position for more than 4-5 seconds.
  • Regular technical inspection of the EUR Priora mechanism will reveal malfunctions and help to immediately eliminate them.
  • You should pay attention to the incomprehensible sounds that the electric amplifier emits.

On the Lada Kalina car, depending on the configuration, an electromechanical power steering can be installed. It acts on the steering shaft. Commands to turn it on are given by various sensors. When starting the engine, while the starter is running, the electromechanical amplifier (EUR) is disabled. He enters into work after reaching crankshaft rotational speed 400 rpm... A signal to him about this is given by the crankshaft speed sensor, he also works with a tachometer. When the car is moving at a speed of more than 60 km / h, the EUR is disabled. It receives data on the magnitude of the vehicle's speed from the speedometer, or, to be more precise, from the speed sensor. An electronic control unit controls the operation of the EUR.

In case of failure of the electric power steering, on the instrument panel the control lamp with the steering wheel symbol lights up... Considering that the speed sensor most often fails, the EUR naturally turns off and will not work, although it itself is serviceable. The electronic control unit does not allow it to work, since it does not receive a signal from the speed sensor. The electronic control unit is not in a very good place, since if the heater radiator is not tight, antifreeze will get on it. A wet microcircuit will not work. Naturally the driver will feel this as the steering becomes heavier.

Kalina's electromechanical power steering is sensitive to voltage on-board network... By technical specifications its operating voltage should be in the range of 10.8 - 15 volts. But there are times that the EUR refuses to work, even if the generator outputs a voltage of 13 volts. The culprit in this case is not the generator itself, but its voltage relay. If the electromechanical power steering fails to operate, for safety reasons, mounting block from the 50 amp fuse socket. In this case, you can continue driving the car, but without the amplifier.

Electric power steering is a device designed to provide more comfortable steering vehicle... Not so long ago, domestically produced cars began to be equipped with amplifiers. EUR in the car Lada Kalina - what are the malfunctions for it, which are and are most used effective ways elimination? Read about it below.

Causes of EUR breakdown

One of the main reasons why it can turn off is the breakdown of the device itself. When the ignition is turned on, the system automatically performs diagnostics, which subsequently does not pass. As a result, the electric power steering does not work due to its own shutdown, which undoubtedly negatively affects the comfort when driving.

Repairing an electric power steering can be quite expensive, so if Kalina is still under warranty, it makes sense to have your ESD repaired by a dealer. In the event that the system has completely failed, you must first turn off the power. In this case, the engine torque will be perceived by the steering element (rack) bypassing the amplifier.

Another reason why the electric booster does not work is the failure of the speed sensor, it is he who is responsible for the operation of the system in various driving modes. At full power, the EUR functions only when driving at minimum speed. When the transport is accelerated, the force that the system creates on the rail is reduced, and this is what the speed regulator is responsible for. Do-it-yourself EUR repair implies self-replacement sensor, the cost of such an element is not high today.

If the speed sensor, directly connected to the speedometer, breaks down, then incorrect data is sent to the unit that controls the EUR. The system automatically turns off, at this moment a diode indicator appears on the control panel, which informs the driver about a device malfunction. In order not to face the need to repair the amplifier, it is enough to carry out diagnostics with a paper clip in time. Thanks to diagnostics, the motorist will be able to find out about all the problems that are present in various mechanisms and transport units.

Let's summarize this point - for what reasons the electric amplifier refuses to work:

  1. There is no signal from the speed sensor. The problem may lie both in the failure of the regulator and in wiring faults.
  2. Highly low level voltage in the car wiring. It is necessary to measure the voltage and solve the problem.
  3. The permissible motor speed has been exceeded.
  4. The control unit is out of order. Repair will help to solve the problem, but usually, if a breakdown occurs, the unit has to be changed.

Dismantling the electric booster

  1. If you decide to repair the electric power steering, then first of all it is necessary to dismantle the steering column switches. Further, it is necessary to disconnect all pads with wires from the control panel - if necessary, then for this it is necessary to unscrew three self-tapping screws. A Phillips screwdriver is used for this.
  2. After completing these steps, you can dismantle the lower cross member of the control panel. To do this, press on the clips that secure the wiring block, and then disconnect them from the system control unit. Only after these steps can you disconnect the block from the switches themselves.
  3. The bracket itself is fixed with a few nuts, they are unscrewed.
  4. The entire steering column must be carefully lowered. It is required to find the screw that fixes the cardan to the shaft of the unit. This screw is unscrewed, while you need to hold the nut to prevent it from turning. After dismantling the screw, the terminal retainer must be pushed apart, then the intermediate shaft is carefully removed. To avoid problems in installation, the location of the shaft, as well as the gears, must be marked with a marker. If the marks on the shafts are not aligned, this will lead to problems in the operation of the system. Never damage the wiring when removing the electrical amplifier.
  5. As for the installation, the procedure is carried out in the reverse order (the author of the video is Murzik Bely).

EUR error on the dashboard

If an error of the electric power steering appears on the instrument panel, then this may indicate a breakdown of the system or its incorrect operation. In this case, the electric amplifier can be fully working. The error appearing on the dashboard is yellow. This indicates that it is possible to use the machine with it, but certain safety measures will need to be observed.

If the device shuts down completely, more effort will be required to operate the machine. To turn off the EUR, it is enough to remove the fuse responsible for its operation. If you notice that the system is not working correctly, then it is better to dismantle the fuse and solve the problem.

If you notice that the indicator light on the control panel lights up only when the ignition is turned on, and goes out after starting the engine, then you should not worry. When the ignition is activated, the system diagnoses all components and mechanisms, so the appearance of the indicator is normal. But if the lamp stays on even after starting the engine, then this indicates a problem.

Video "What you need to know about repairing an electric amplifier"

New items follow us step by step. Some technologies are being replaced by others. A person, wishing to make his life easier, begins to introduce them into the car. If earlier there was a well-known "meat grinder" in the car, with which the windows of the car were opened, but now you can hardly meet it anywhere, to facilitate this action, power windows have been installed. So it happened with the usual steering wheel. To facilitate control, they first came up with a power steering, and then an electric amplifier.

The electric power roller, also called the EUR, is a system that is designed to reduce the forces applied to twist the steering wheel. That is, if earlier it was necessary to twist the steering wheel by applying the efforts of both hands, now this action can be performed with one finger.

Electric power steering prices for the Lada Kalina model range from 8,000 rubles for a used part up to 25,000 rubles for a new one.

What does this amplifier consist of?

Electric power steering is a systematic work of many parts, such as:

  1. Electric motor.
  2. Electronic control unit.
  3. Steering shaft with torsion shaft.
  4. Non-contact torque sensor.
  5. Rotor position sensor.

How does EUR work?

An electric booster is installed on the steering shaft of the car, its parts are connected by a torsion shaft and a torque sensor is installed. The twisting of the torsion shaft occurs when the steering wheel rotates and is memorized by the sensor. After analyzing this data, the electronic control unit gives a command to the electric motor for amplification.

Pros and cons of an electric booster?

The advantages of the EUR:

  • Compact mechanism... The device itself is installed on the steering shaft, thereby not taking up space under the hood.
  • Easy to maintain... The electric booster does not require constant monitoring of the liquid level.
  • Easily customizable.
  • Economical... The electric motor turns on only when the steering wheel is turned.

Disadvantages of EUR:

  • The electric amplifier overheats during heavy operation. For example, on dirt road after the rain.
  • Low power. The reason for this was not a powerful electric generator.

Keep in mind that any type of power steering can also be dangerous.

Amplifier breakdown reasons

A fairly common cause of power steering malfunction is incorrect operation of the speed sensor. Replacing and fixing the problem will not cost the car owner much, and you can do this operation yourself. The higher the vehicle speed, the less the amplifier works, making it easier to control. In the event of a sensor malfunction, the amplifier reads incorrect information and turns off. This kind of breakdown is easy to detect. The EUR light on the dashboard will simply light up. All you need is to replace the speed sensor.

Another reason for the failure of the amplifier is a malfunction of the amplifier itself. The solution to this problem will not come cheap.

EUR operating rules

In order for the mechanism to work correctly and serve properly for a long time, it needs to be used correctly. Subject to which, you will not soon find out how the amplifier is repaired and how much it costs.

The amplifier relay does not at all like any kind of influence on itself (mechanical or physical). This is a very fragile part, do not drop it under any circumstances. Well, if this happens, carefully examine it, and in case of breakage of parts, replace them.

Avoid mechanical heating of electrical devices, as well as the possibility of being in a humid room. Never touch the contacts of the device, they can be deformed, and it will be necessary to replace them.
After installing the control unit, be sure to adjust it so that the correct speed of the vehicle will be displayed in the future.

Any kind of impact on the steering column assembly is prohibited.... Any mechanism, including the EUR, does not like when they try to influence it from outside. Therefore, without having the skills to repair this system, it is better not to try to start.
