GAZ-3309 is a popular flatbed truck, which has been produced by the group of the Gorky Automobile Plant since 1994. Over the years of production, the machine has undergone some improvements, which also related to obtaining modern economical power units which corresponded to Euro-4 environmental standards.

Car history

As we have already said, "Gazon" 3309 has been released since 1994, which means that it belongs to the fourth family of medium-duty trucks of the Gorky Automobile Plant.

The debut cars of this index had a 4-cylinder power unit that ran on diesel fuel. On top of that, the engine was turbocharged and produced 116 horsepower. The volume of the engine was 4.15 liters.

After some time, 3309 began to be produced with another diesel engine, which was also equipped with a turbocharging system, but already had six cylinders and produced as many as 150 horses.

But? three years later (in 1997), the production of such trucks was stopped. This was tied to the fact that the GAZ-3309 was considered not profitable for economic reasons.

Following the rebuilding of the Gorky enterprise, the management decided to improve the cab. As a result, the “Lawn” cab was significantly changed and the development of a diesel power unit for the car began.

Thanks to the diesel engine, it turned out to get more power while lowering fuel consumption. But in order to make a diesel power unit, the technological staff worked hard.

During the development, the company purchased a considerable number of brand new machines and stands. They served as a springboard for engine tests comparing them to petrol variants. When there was a technological breakthrough, a diesel unit was developed, which received a turbocharging system.

Thanks to such a strong engine, the car could carry a heavy truck quite vigorously. Following the introduction of changes in the appearance of the cab, the designers decided to pay attention to the internal components of the 3309. Even at the start of the 1980s, numerous assembly units were altered that were installed in the car.

And with the help of many modifications, which affected the suspension, body, engine and transmission, the car became cheaper, but was able to increase its efficiency.

In addition, repairs, along with machine maintenance, have also become much easier with fewer parts. On top of that, due to their reduction, the number of possible breakdowns of various components has been reduced.

After 2001, the Gorky Automobile Plant began purchasing power units from the Minsk enterprise that produces engines. From that moment on, a new revival of the model was started, on which they began to mount the engines on diesel fuel MMZ D-245.7.

After another 5 years (2006), diesel power units that meet the European environmental standards Euro-2 began to be installed on "Gazon". Two years later, the motors were already able to fit the Euro-3 frames.

1999 was a turning point for the truck. Its technical component was much improved with the introduction of the Minsk power unit MMZ D-245.7. The latter engine had low fuel consumption and good performance.

The last improvement was made in the 2000s, when the Gorky engineers managed to adapt the Minsk engine to Euro-2 environmental standards. But by the end of the 2000s, vehicle production plummeted. Why?

There are several reasons. One of them is the presence of an outdated design. The model has been produced for 20 years, and the shape of the cabin, along with the body, has not changed at all. It is also important that a truck, in terms of its type, is generally not suitable for the current transportation market.

It is clear that in the 1980s few people thought about this, but today it is no longer the 80s, and the level of comfort plays one of the most important roles when choosing a truck.

Appearance

If we talk about the exterior of the GAZ-3309, then the diesel variation from the gasoline one is almost impossible to distinguish. They differ, perhaps, by the presence of an air intake pipe, which runs along the hood and the window pillar of the cab.

With the help of such an element, a diesel car could drive through the deepest water barriers, because the air to the power unit came just from a similar pipe, which was located at a height of 2 meters. In addition, do not forget about the large wheels and rather big ground clearance.

Gasoline truck modification

The successor to the 53rd model received an almost unchanged cab design. The truck has all the same round headlights, a recognizable steel bumper, an oblong hood and a classic metal step, which makes it easier for the driver to get into the cabin. Based on the feedback, there were many flaws in the design of the truck cab.

For example, they often sinned on the wings, which almost always rusted. As a result, they required a putty treatment or the application of new steel sheets over the corroded metal.

However, the bumper itself, as before, is quite massive and durable. With the help of the considerable thickness of the metal, it can withstand forces of up to several tons.

The chauffeur can, without worry, fasten the cable to one of the two holes in the bumper and get the car out of almost any swamp in tow. Although, we must admit that the diesel variation of the "Lawn" almost did not allow it to get stuck even in the deepest and most relief terrain, so often towing was simply not required.

Like all the rest of the current trucks, which are produced by the Gorky Automobile Plant, "bortovik" acquired the presence of an all-metal cabin, where there is a simple exterior design.

Moreover, it has straight contours with sharp edges, which are diluted with round optics, a shockproof bumper along with a massive grille. The cockpit received a pair of doors with a fairly wide opening. There is also the presence of large glazing, which provides an easy approach to the engine compartment in three directions.

Cabin interior

When comparing the interior of the 53rd model and the 3309, the latter significantly gained in convenience and design. The most important difference is that plastic parts were used. In addition, the interior of the 53rd model had preferably metal elements, which include the dashboard itself.

Everything related to the speedometer, tachometer and other informational details, they were left in the same style. The glove compartment was made with a plastic lid. The thin steering wheel on the GAZ-3309 is represented by a two-spoke one, and, as before, has received a very massive diameter.

It will not be superfluous to note that models with a diesel power unit were equipped with a hydraulic power steering wheel. At that time, the hydraulic booster was considered a luxury option and it was installed only on the 66th "Lawn" and large-tonnage KamAZ trucks. Of the "conveniences", the design staff equipped the cabin only with hooks for clothes, sun visors and a heater.

Due to the fact that the designers removed the second passenger seat, inside the GAZ-3309 there was much more free space, which was sorely lacking in its predecessor.

The interior floor is flat, as was the case with its predecessor, the GAZ-53. Other changes include the presence of a new layout of the seats, which replaced one solid wide "sofa". Already in the cabin there is a separate driver's and one passenger's seat.

It will not be superfluous to add that the driver's seat is now sprung and has received a complete set of separate mechanically adjustable backrest. Both seats have high backrests, soft fabric upholstery and imitation lateral support, and are also supported by three-point seat belts.

The roominess of the interior was reduced, because in the previous model two passengers could sit next to the driver. However, there were also advantages here: due to the lack of one seat, you can see more free space inside.

Other changes include new fabric upholstery on door cards, which have a large storage compartment. Judging by the photos that can be seen in this article, the interior of the truck was made in the style of the 1980s.

Many designs of parts are more angular, which makes the interior of the car seem morally old by today's standards. The last and most important improvement of the cab allowed the designers to install thermal and noise insulation, which was not even foreseen in the 53rd model.

Power unit

The Gazon 3309 came with several powerplant variations. The most common was the MMZ D-245.7E4. It featured a diesel-powered, four-cylinder, four-stroke in-line engine that was liquid cooled, direct injection, charge air cooler and turbocharged.

General information

After the tests, it became clear that the plant needed a fundamentally different model. At that moment, the main competitor of GAZ was developing a new generation of medium-duty trucks ZIL-169G. In 1976, the country's leadership decided to start global dieselization, and at the Gorky plant they decided to equip the novelty with a diesel engine with air cooled, the license for the production of which was planned to be purchased in Germany.

In 1981, the premiere of the second prototype of the car took place, and in 1986 - the GAZ 3307 model, which became the basis for the creation of the GAZ 3309. The models were completely unified, and external differences were only in the location of the engine air intake pipe. The production of GAZ 3309 started in 1994, and after 2 years the car completely replaced the carburetor GAZ 3307.

The first variants were equipped with 4-cylinder units with a capacity of 116 hp. Later, 6-cylinder diesels appeared. The truck immediately became very popular among consumers, since it had high technical indicators at a low cost.

However, in the history of GAZ 3309 there were also black stripes. The car received a frame structure with additional reinforcement.
