Many designers boast of the ability to build cool cranes. They even print on boxes. My father began my acquaintance with the metal constructor also with a crane.

The model cannot be controlled. Everything falls apart right in the hands. I just want to take it and glue it together. But they say that Lego has a series of Techniques that allows you to realize the most daring engineering ideas (Lego owes me a lot of money now for this ad!). But this is for an older age. And not cheap.
In general, we succeeded:

It is possible to understand the construction of a crane using this model. Dismantle Newton's third law. It is impossible to play with pleasure.
Metal.
My Soviet designer has thinned a lot over the years. For the experiment, additional emission of parts was required. Where to get it - no one knows. Take it for rent. The fact that "Recommended for labor lessons" is good enough to ruin the engineering imagination. After all, they save on everything, the capitalists. Need help from the past. I asked my dad (oh, how he didn’t want to give!) A real rarity:

Socialist countries lived amicably, the East German designer came to the aid of the Soviet designer. The result was a joint project of the USSR-GDR "Druzhba". And what? The Lego over there also has parts from Chinese substitutes in the box!
Succeeded:

We even managed to make a console.

Today's experiment, in view of the unexpectedly appeared (for me) information about the existence of "Lego Technician" cannot be considered clean enough. I think next time I'll see what it is. Ordinary Lego today loses to the Metal constructor in functional abilities.
Reflections on the topic.
Lego is beautiful and easy to use. The pioneer himself is drawn to him. The metal constructor scares an unprepared child. Nuts, tools ... It's just that it's not interesting, it seems complicated. Here it is very necessary for dad to help, interest, show how great and simple everything is here.
I remember from my childhood, and I am sure that many will support me: creating toys for yourself is much more interesting than playing them later. Being engaged in a constructor, a child acquires engineering skills that theoretically cannot be grasped. It is absorbed into the bloodstream along with design practice. Pay attention to the development of childish accuracy. Whatever the version of the constructor, an ill-conceived model does not hold the load, loses its stability, stands and does not go, in a word, does not forgive technical mistakes. They still have to be eliminated. The child learns to follow through and control the results of his work. Carelessness will not work.
The question "Which is better, Lego, or the Soviet constructor?" I close. These are too different things. They should coexist, not conflict. They have a common goal. Children's construction sets are just a step towards real adult construction. You can't stop at iron or plastic. Lego - Lego Technician - Metal construction set - Self-production parts - Self-production of materials and further, resting, if only in the laws of physics. Stagnating at any stage, potential Kulibin may not grow further.

This is how I remember my childhood. Light also due to the abundance of interesting technology and iron around. My parents, especially my dad, from small nails surrounded me with very interesting things - either the engine from a Zaporozhets on the kitchen table, then the color tube TV disassembled for repair, or the portable radio-recorder Mriya, who could play gramophone records by weight. But most importantly, my parents sometimes bought me various interesting constructors. And the most memorable for me was the "Electrical Engineering in 200 Experiments" set.

Now, unfortunately, they are not made, including abroad. I constantly look at the shelves of toy stores both in our country and when I travel around Europe. There is nothing of the kind. And this constructor was good in that it combined a lot of various parts and components, from which it was possible to assemble both toys and conduct entertaining physical and electrical experiments. And now, when my son is growing up, I also want to surround him with interesting technical things. And one of them is such a constructor. I don’t want to buy incomplete used 30-year-olds, because the shortage is a tragedy :) And it’s almost impossible to find it at flea markets. But it is quite possible to assemble something similar from the available parts, and without much effort.
First, the base, the usual inexpensive metal construction kits that can still be bought at toy stores.
And secondly, what will bring this constructor to life will add movement. These are motors, wires and batteries. Where to get them? Ha, I'm sure if you have kids you know what Chinese toys are. They are certainly bought as a gift for children by both parents and grandmothers, acquaintances, guests of the parents. All these flying dogs, jumping cars, barking planes - all this breaks down in an hour (day, week) and flies into the trash can. But with me they fly to the trash can only after extracting the main treasure from them :)
Engines direct current... Taking into account the fact that I have four children, a lot of this wealth has accumulated. How can these motors help? And here's what. Once a couple of years ago, my son and I were poking around in my instruments and I suddenly suggested to him, let's assemble the car from a stick. Who wouldn't agree to this? We took a piece of some kind of bar, a motor, nails, an AAA battery and bungled it in 30 minutes.
Nails and sticks, literally, turned out to be an unprepossessing self-propelled toy. The child did not let go of her all evening, and after that he showed it to all the guests - "Look, what a limousine my dad and I made!" That's when I decided it was time to do these things on a more serious level. First, we put together a wind turbine, a memorable object from our last trip to Europe.
It turned out to be so cool that there was only one thing left to do, to stock up on parts for such crafts in sufficient, industrial quantities :) On the market I bought all kinds of switches, battery holders, rubber bands. Grandmothers and friends were told that now our best gift is a metal construction set. And after a while my son and I became the owners of the coolest set possible. It was possible to start creating.
Our next craft is an airplane. Twin-engine fighter.
Where there is a plane, there is a helicopter. The son added two additional floors to the main rotor, it seemed to him better.
The child played with this toy-helicopter for the longest time, because the main rotor was easily used as a circular saw of a grinder - the helicopter sawed a lot of things in the house - to the delight of mom :)
Now she walks with reluctance, the mechanism needs to be adjusted.
But right after its manufacture, the walking machine, as her son called her, made everyone very happy with a cheerful gait :)
And the very last of our crafts. To make it, I bought a radio control kit on Aliexpress, a remote control with a receiver, a motor with a gearbox and wheels, a steering servo and a motor control scarf. All these things are available on Ali in the most different sizes, capacities, opportunities. We made a radio-controlled tricycle with full control - gas, brake, steering.
There is so much foolishness in this mad tricycle that it is difficult to get under way without slipping. But it is easy to make a police U-turn.
Below is a video of an unequal fight between a mad car and a caterpillar. My son and I collected a caterpillar for an exhibition in kindergarten, there was a need for a craft made of natural material, well, we built a real ooooooooo slow caterpillar from coconuts, chestnuts and elements of the constructor. Due to the slowness of the caterpillar, the video is slightly tightening, yaying :)
Such wonderful things can be done from an ordinary metal construction set, fragments of old toys and a certain amount of purchased parts. The only parent's skill is to be able to solder a little, without it it will be difficult with all these wires, switches and batteries. And, of course, fantasy, but usually children have even more of it than adults, so involve the child, he will tell you what to do.
There is, of course, another way. For example, ready-made Lego kits. Lego has a wind turbine.
There are all sorts of racing cars and trucks.
In general, Lego has everything, including robots and kits for their customization and programming.
But personally, I do not have a soul for Lego. And my son has problems with Lego, once he dropped the toy, and it shattered into small cubes, it’s very annoying to put everything together again. And Lego costs immensely, especially interactive robotic kits with motors or limited editions of any starships from Star Wars. Our metal will be more budgetary, even taking into account the purchase of remotes on Ali.
There is also the original metal constructor, Meccano. But again, it is very expensive and it is not easy to get it in our area. Therefore, here is the final photo of our wealth.
