The Volkswagen Passat B5 and its upgraded version of the VW Passat B6 are equipped with an engine that has an excellent power reserve. Power point interacts with the transmission system to provide dynamic maneuvering on the road. The line of engines for these models is quite diverse. There can be both manual transmission and automatic transmission.

It is possible to extend the performance of any installed high-speed gearbox if the driver does not miss scheduled maintenance, as well as refuel with original oil.

Checking the transmission fluid level

The frequency of oil change in an automatic transmission is influenced by the conditions under which the machine is operated. The owner of a foreign car must monitor the level and quality of the oil poured into the box. You should not postpone the replacement procedure if the following signs appear:

  • extraneous noise when changing gears;
  • Difficulty shifting gears
  • the appearance of vibrations.

How to check the oil level on the Passat B5? To do this, you need to put the car on a jack or start it on an overpass, climb under it to unscrew the plug. In this case, the foreign car must be started, the system warmed up to about + 35 ... + 40 ° C. Top up is required if, after unscrewing, the liquid does not flow.

The procedure for changing the oil in the automatic transmission Volkswagen Passat

On VW Passat B5 with automatic transmission, in rare cases, a complete oil change is needed. It only needs to be refilled. It is quite possible to carry out an oil change in an automatic transmission in a Volkswagen Passat by a motorist with his own hands.

Tools required: a set of hexagons, wrenches, tweezers. In addition to this, you will need a rag, a container for draining the old fluid, a special oil cleaner, a funnel with a connected hose. With a complete oil change, you need to arm yourself not only with a new fuel, a filter, but also a sump gasket.

Oil change in automatic transmission Passat B5 or B6 should be carried out on a flat horizontal surface. Let's list the main working stages:

  1. The car with a warm engine is started up into the inspection pit.
  2. The pallet and the filter element are removed.
  3. The drain plug is unscrewed.
  4. The oil should drain into a prepared container.
  5. The wire connectors must be disconnected, the control plate dismantled.
  6. The pallet, the drain plug should be rinsed.
  7. To fill a new transmission fluid, it is worth unscrewing the oil filler bolt, take a funnel with an elastic hose, connect it to the box. The filling is carried out until the oil reaches the edges of the neck.
  8. Holding the car on parking brake, you should start the engine, activate each gear several times, after which you need to check the fuel level again. As a rule, it decreases and needs to be added. It is necessary for the box temperature to be around + 40 ° C.

This procedure takes about 7-9 liters of liquid. When dismantling the pallet and removing the filter, the driver must remember the position of the selector lever.

Flushing of the control plate is required during the fuel change. Its contamination refers to the reasons that there is a violation of the automatic transmission operating modes. Flushing the slab also includes cleaning the associated slab, balls and other elements. Use tweezers to remove these items. Gasoline is suitable as a sump cleaner.

Changing the oil in the Passat B5 automatic transmission is not a complicated procedure that novice motorists can handle. These cars appeared on the roads back in the 90s on the roads of the Russian Federation. The Volkswagen brand itself was considered a "workhorse" both in Germany and in our country.

Did you know that the Volkswagen Passat was equipped not only with a manual transmission, but also with an automatic transmission. These were four-speed and five-speed automatic transmissions. Which one you have, write in the comments.

Transmission oil change interval

Before we talk about the interval, let's see what models of machines were installed on the Passat b5.

  • Is a four-speed automatic. The main difference with this box is that it can adapt to the driver's driving style;
  • 01V or - it was a five-step. Have of this type the machine has a tiptronic function. It allows you to manually change gears on the box.

On both Passat B5 automatic transmissions, the manufacturer does not recommend changing the oil, citing the fact that it is not replaceable and can be driven for five years. But we know that this is a special marketing move so that the car owner, after two years, or even less, throws out the automatic transmission on the Passat B5 and buys a new one.

Attention! For Russian roads, as well as for severe climatic conditions, not changing the oil on the Passat b5 will not only lead to the gearbox failing, but also the engine will junk.

Therefore, I advise you to change the lubricant to the Passat B5 after 60 thousand kilometers completely, and after 30 thousand kilometers make a partial replacement. This will save your automatic transmission on the Passat B5 from overhaul, well, at least 250 thousand kilometers, at least. If you, of course, do not forget to do regular maintenance of the machine once a year.

Volkswagen cars, series B5, appeared on Russian roads in the second half of the 90s of the last century. Although more than 20 years have passed since the beginning of their production, these cars still drive, delighting their owners with reliability, unpretentiousness and German workmanship. From 1996 to 2005, two generations of sedans and station wagons of this model were produced. The first modification was carried out from 1996 to 2000. The next generation received model numbers B5.5 and B5 +. The cars were equipped with mechanical and automatic variable transmissions (manual transmission and automatic transmission).

Manual transmissions - features and maintenance

Volkswagen B5 is equipped with three types of 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions:

  1. 5-speed manual transmission 012 / 01W, designed for use in vehicles with gasoline and diesel power units with a capacity of 100 horsepower.
  2. Manual transmission model 01A, intended for gasoline engines with a volume of 2 to 2.8 liters.
  3. Mechanics with 5 and 6 gears, model 01E, works in cars with turbocharged diesel engines, with a capacity of 130 horses or more.

Automatic transmissions are available in two models:

  1. The four-speed automatic transmission 01N is controlled by a program that can adapt to road conditions, the manner of driving, as well as the resistance provided by the movement of the vehicle.
  2. The 5-speed automatic 01V (5 HP 19) is distinguished by the possibility of manual gear shifting (tiptronic). Driven by a dynamic gearshift program.

Changing the oil in manual transmissions

The manufacturer indicates that the oil in the transmissions should not be changed. Maybe this is true for Western European operating conditions, when the car is changed to a new one after 5 years of operation. In Russia, the situation is somewhat different, therefore it is recommended to change the oil after every 60 thousand kilometers.

Fill the box with gear oil corresponding to VW code G 052 911 A2. Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75W-90 is commonly used. If this grease is not available, it can be replaced with Shell S4 G 75W-90, with the same characteristics. The manual transmission 012 / 01W requires 2.2 liters of transmission fluid. For boxes 01A and 01E, you will need a little more - up to 2.8 liters.

You can change the lubricating fluid yourself. The main condition for such work is the presence of a viewing hole, overpass or lift. There is one more nuance: the drain and filler plugs can be installed under the hexagon at 17. But there is a manual transmission, in which the plugs can be unscrewed only with asterisks at 16, with holes in the middle (see Fig.).

Craftsmen drill a central protrusion so that it can be unscrewed with an ordinary sprocket (see fig.).

If the problem with the key is resolved and an oil replacement fluid has been purchased, an auxiliary tool should be prepared:

  • a container for draining used oil, with a volume of at least 3 liters;
  • metal brush and rags;
  • A funnel with a small diameter hose put on it, about 1 meter long, so that it can be pushed into the control hole of the gearbox.

Replacing the lubricant occurs in the following sequence:

  1. A car with a warmed-up engine and a manual gearbox is installed above a viewing pit or drives into an overpass. The machine must be on a level surface secured by the parking brake.
  2. The filler (control) hole plug, located in the front side of the manual transmission housing, is cleaned with a brush and wiped with a rag.
  3. After the filler hole is cleaned, it must be unscrewed.
  4. In the same way, the drain plug in the gearbox oil pan is cleaned.
  5. An empty container is installed under the drain hole, the plug is carefully unscrewed. Be careful as the dripping oil is very hot.
  6. After all the liquid has drained out, a new copper washer is put on the drain plug and the plug is screwed into its seat.
  7. The hood opens, a hose is pulled through the engine compartment to the gearbox filler hole and is wound inside the case.
  8. Fresh lubricating fluid is carefully poured through the funnel until traces of it emerge from the filler hole.
  9. The hole through which the grease was poured is twisted. Oil residues are wiped off the gearbox housing.
  10. You should take a short trip so that the oil composition is dispersed throughout the entire manual transmission mechanism.
  11. The machine is again installed above the inspection pit, after which you need to allow the oil to cool slightly and drain into the crankcase. Then check its level by unscrewing the filler (control) plug again. The oily liquid should be level with the lower edge of the hole. If the level is lower, the oil must be topped up.

After changing the oil, many car owners note that the manual transmission starts to work better. Gears change much easier, there is no extraneous noise when driving. The oil level is checked with a dipstick. Its edge on the dipstick should be in the middle, between the MIN and MAX marks.

Automatic gearboxes - maintenance and replacement of transmission fluid

Car manufacturer, concern VAG, in the accompanying documentation to Volkswagen cars states that the transmission fluid (ATF) is not replaceable. If this vehicle is operated on Russian roads, a replacement lubricating fluid it is desirable to make every 40 thousand kilometers of travel. Then the machine will serve for a long time without causing any complaints. If this condition is not observed, the following malfunctions may occur:

  • while driving, when shifting gears, jerks are observed;
  • the car reacts to switching with a delay;
  • The automatic transmission cannot shift to the required gear.

The reason for this behavior may not only be a bad state. working fluid, but also an insufficient amount or ingress of dirt into the control plate. Therefore, every case of non-standard behavior automatic box needs to be considered individually.

What ATF to use when replacing

For partial or complete replacement lubricating fluid in both types of automatic transmissions, ATFs are used that meet the requirements of VW G 052162A2. It is recommended to use semi-synthetic working fluid Esso Type LT 71141. It can be purchased at prices ranging from 690 to 720 rubles per 1 liter. If it is not on sale, you can use it to replace Mobil LT 71141, at a price of 550 to 620 rubles. per liter.

For a 01N gearbox with 4 gears, you need 3 liters of working fluid for a partial replacement and 5.5 liters for a complete replacement. In addition, about 1 liter is poured into the main gear of the box. gear oil corresponding to VW G 052145S2. If the vehicle is equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission 01V, partial replacement will require 3.3 liters of lubricant. For a complete replacement, you will need 9 liters of ATF.

The procedure for replacing the working fluid

The list of work performed when replacing ATF is similar to automatic transmissions of models 01N and 01V. As an example, fluid replacement in box V01 is described. Before you start, you need to prepare the tool and purchase a couple of accessories. Looking for:

  • pallet gasket, catalog number - 01V321371;
  • cleaning filter, numbered 01V325429;
  • hexagons, sizes 8–17;
  • heads for star-shaped torxes, sizes from 25 to 30;
  • a wrench with a dynamometer;
  • fine-tipped tweezers;
  • gasoline for flushing;
  • empty container for draining the spent liquid;
  • small diameter hose for filling ATF;
  • rags.

Additional keys may be required if the crankcase guard needs to be removed. Further, the following sequence of actions is performed:

  1. The engine and automatic transmission are warmed up by a short trip, then the car drives into an inspection pit or an overpass, and is fixed with a parking brake.
  2. If there is a pallet protection, it is removed.
  3. An empty container is substituted, after which the fluid drain plug in the automatic transmission pan is unscrewed with a hexagon at "8". ATF is partially drained into a container.
  4. The bolts securing the pallet are unscrewed with a torx on "27", after which it is removed.
  5. The remnants of the working fluid are drained. There are magnets on the inner surface of the pallet, on which chips have adhered. By its quantity, the degree of wear of the box is estimated.
  6. The automatic transmission filter is removed from the control plate. First, you need to substitute the container, since oil may flow from under it.
  7. All connectors suitable for the control plate are disconnected. The fixation of the wiring harness and the rotation sensor are removed.
  8. After assembly, the automatic transmission selector gate must be in the same position as before starting work.

Working with the control plate

  1. With the help of torx, 17 bolts are unscrewed, which secure the control plate. The sequence for unscrewing the bolts is strictly regulated. You need to start with number 17 shown in the figure and end with number 1.
  2. The plate is carefully removed. The internal cavity of the automatic transmission is freed from the remnants of the old ATF.
  3. The design of the plate is carefully disassembled - unscrewed 5 component parts of which it consists. The fastening screws are of different lengths, so it is better to position them so that they do not get confused later.
  4. In the plate, there is a massive plate, under it are the nozzles and balls. It should be removed very carefully so that the elements underneath do not jump out of their nests.
  5. After cleaning the plate, it must be placed with its inner surface outward, next to the stove. Nozzles and balls from the plate are transferred with tweezers into the sockets on the plate.

Assembly and oil filling

  1. The assembly of the control plate is carried out in the reverse order.
  2. The control plate fits into place. All 17 bolts are tightened with a torque wrench, with the same force - 8 Nm. The bolts are now tightened in sequence from 1 to 17.
  3. The selector arm is set in place. Connectors with wires are connected, the harness is fixed. A new filter is being installed.
  4. A pallet with a new gasket is screwed to the bottom of the plate. If there is a new washer for the drain plug, it is advisable to install it as well.
  5. Unscrew the filler plug bolt. The tip of a hose connected to a plastic container is inserted into the hole.
  6. The working fluid is poured until it flows out of the filler hole.
  7. The engine starts, the brake pedal is depressed. The selector is briefly transferred to all positions. This procedure should be repeated several times.
  8. The engine turns off, ATF is added to the filler hole until it starts to flow out again. It is necessary to check that about 7 liters of fresh fluid have been poured into the automatic transmission.
  9. The engine starts again, the transmission warms up to 40–45 ° C. Then the gearbox selector is switched to parking mode (P). In this mode, with the engine running, the remaining lubricant is added. As soon as droplets of liquid begin to fly out of the filler hole, it means that the required level of the working fluid has been reached.

Checking the transmission fluid level in the automatic transmission

Boxes N01 and V01 do not have dipsticks for measuring the oil level. In order to check its level in the automatic transmission V01, you should drive the car into the inspection pit. Check the oil temperature by connecting a scanner or VAGCOM. It should be around 30–35 ° C, not higher. Then turn on the engine and switch the selector to position P. With the engine running, unscrew the drain plug.
If the level of the working fluid is normal, liquid should flow out of the plug in thin streams. After that, you need to immediately tighten the drain plug without turning off the engine. If there is not enough lubricant, it will not pour out of the hole. In this case, you need to turn off the engine and top up ATF.

Master in car service.
Was purchased from a client for next to nothing. The client squatted away. I would not be surprised if the whole amount was spent on drink for joy. Behind my back were (as I confessed, sobbing into my vest): 2 engine replacements, one cylinder head and 4 purchased used boxes. The pendant does not remember how many times. And all this in two years.
Useful for testing valve bodies. Since I am engaged in automatic transmission bulkhead for these cars, I know them well. What can you say? Nothing is allowed. The site rules prohibit swearing.
But let's try.
1.Suspension.
Great achievement of the gloomy German genius. Aluminum in parts under constant compressive-tensile and twisting stresses is strong! We wish the respected manufacturer further success on this difficult path and look forward to new achievements. Namely: levers made of chipboard, dried dung and pressed chicken droppings.
It changes twice a year and costs about £ 500 per set. You only need to change the kit. And stretch under load! but NOT THAT COVERED HERE WITH A COPPER TASIK. Actually, for this they were invented: change more often and more expensive (see logbook)
2. Engine.
Reinforced AWM and AWT are famous for their lusciousness, tenderness and capriciousness. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TOLERATE OVERHEATING. Immediately leads the head off, and they have it from 35 to 45000r bu in the collection. The head cannot be repaired, as a rule, it is useless. The block does not lag behind either. (80-100000)
3. The resource of the turbines has long been exhausted (100,000) - so save money (20,000 replacing the cartridge with a new one)
4.Automatic transmission
Here, oddly enough, I can't say anything bad. They walk around 200-300 thousand, they are easily repaired (I have a complete prereborka for 37,000 with a six-month guarantee) The only thing that cannot be done is to buy a used one. They are all already in a dying state and the oil change will kill them like a control shot. Dirt washes away from the walls - the filter does not cope - blocked oil holes (they are there from 0.2 to 0.9 mm) - oil starvation and - the northern fluffy animal comes to visit. The money was thrown away - a guarantee for a bu, a maximum of two weeks.
But there is no merit of VAG here: a box of a third-party manufacturer, ZF. Model 5HP19. But the owners of those cars on which the creation of Volkswagen 01 4 st (1.6 1.8 1.9 aspirated) was put, you will not envy them. Without replacing the valve body with new automatic transmission will not go. Valve body from 25 to 30,000 (if you're lucky).
That is, over the bulkhead without removal and installation - from 50 to 65,000.
Cute?
The little things are the same: the automatic transmission ECU is located in such a thoughtful place that it is constantly flooded with water (from 6 to 15,000 ea bu)
Ignition coils are constantly flying.
The calipers are unreliable ...
Glass lifters ... central lock ...
In general, the picture is clear.
I will end with the epigraph I saw on rear window this car
"IF YOU LOVE SHIT, THE PASSAT IS A FULL POT"
PY SY. For the sake of objectivity, it is worth saying that one detail they have, apart from jokes, is above all praise - the mechanics of the box. It is simply indestructible and almost NEVER breaks. Unless she picks up the curbs. But even then, the trouble is not big: precisely because they are completely unclaimed in parsing, it is really possible to buy it for 5 thousand.

1.19. Checking / changing the oil level in an automatic transmission

Level transmission oil in an automatic transmission depends on the temperature of the transmission oil. Since accurate temperature measurement requires diagnostic equipment, it is recommended that this work be done at a VW workshop. Typically, the oil level in an automatic transmission remains constant if no leaks are visible. In this case, there is no need to check the oil level.

Automatic 4-speed gearbox 01N (in conjunction with 4-cylinder engine, except 150 hp engines)

Use protective goggles when checking the oil level and changing the oil. It is also necessary to install a new seal for the screw plug and a new protective cap for the plug.

Checking the oil level

When checking the level, the temperature of the transmission oil should be slightly below + 35 ° C. This temperature is reached a short time after starting the engine. To determine the temperature, it is necessary to connect the VW diagnostic equipment to the connector. Otherwise, the temperature can only be determined roughly.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1.
2.
3.
4.
5. When the temperature of the automatic transmission is from +35 to + 40 ° C, unscrew the screw plug (1) in the gearbox oil pan. The oil level is normal if there is a slight oil release (conditionally due to a rise in the oil level during heating). Otherwise, add oil to the transmission. Screw the plug back in until the temperature reaches + 45 ° С and tighten it to a torque of 15 Nm.
6. Install the engine lower mudguard.

Change of oil
PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Place the vehicle on a lift in a horizontal position.
2. Remove the engine lower mudguard.
3. Place a suitable container under the automatic transmission oil pan.
4. Unscrew the screw plug (1) for checking the oil level, and then using a hex wrench and drain (bypass) pipe (2) from the oil pan (see Fig. Checking the oil level in an automatic transmission). Wait for all the oil to drain from the transmission. A warning

Do not start or tow a vehicle without automatic transmission oil.

5. Screw the drain (bypass) pipe (2) into the oil pan as far as it will go.
6. Remove the protective cap located on the oil filler pipe with a screwdriver; this will destroy it. Unscrew the plug.
7. First, fill the transmission with 3.0 liters of fresh oil through the oil filler pipe.
8. Place the selector lever in the "P" position, start the engine and let it idle.
9. With the engine idling, apply the brake and move the selector lever to all positions (P, N, R, 3,2,1) with a delay in each position for 2-3 seconds.
10. Check the transmission oil level and correct if necessary.
11. With the required oil level, install the plug and close it with the safety cap.
12. Install the engine lower mudguard.

Checking the oil level in an automatic transmission

The 01V automatic 5-speed gearbox does not have an oil change and only the oil level is checked during maintenance.

Typically, the oil level in an automatic transmission remains constant if no leaks are visible. In this case, there is no need to check the oil level.

Use protective goggles when checking the oil level. It is also necessary to install a new seal on the screw plug. Use a curved grease gun to add oil.

When checking the level, the temperature of the transmission oil should be slightly below + 40 ° C. This temperature is reached a short time after starting the engine. To determine the temperature, it is necessary to connect the VW diagnostic equipment to the connector. Otherwise, the temperature can only be determined roughly.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Place the vehicle on a lift in a horizontal position.
2. Remove the engine lower mudguard.
3. Place the automatic transmission selector lever in the "P" position and apply the handbrake.
4. Start the engine while testing at idle speed.
5. When the temperature of the automatic transmission is from +35 to + 40 ° C, unscrew the screw plug (2) in the gearbox oil pan (see Fig. Checking the oil level in an automatic transmission). The oil level is normal if there is a slight oil release (conditionally due to a rise in the oil level during heating).
If not, add oil to the screw plug hole.
6. Fill in fresh oil with an oiler until it comes out of the hole in the screw plug (2). A warning

Do not push the grease gun upward, as the slinger cap (4) may come off. Insert the bend of the oil filling syringe into the side opening of the slinger cap. Do not unscrew the bolt (1).

7. Screw the plug (2) back into place until the temperature reaches + 45 ° C and tighten it to 80 Nm.

Checking the oil condition

When checking the automatic transmission oil level, also check the oil condition. Compare the color, odor and viscosity of the oil with the new oil to make it easier to check the condition of the oil.

If the oil in the gearbox is dark or almost black with a burnt odor, then the gearbox friction linings are worn out.

If the oil in the gearbox is milky, then water has entered it. This can happen when the vehicle is used continuously for short trips. If the color of the oil does not change after a long trip, the oil must be changed.

If the oil is dark brown and sticky, it could be due to overheating of the gearbox or too high an oil level in the gearbox. If the oil change does not work, the vehicle must be taken to a VW specialist workshop.

If, when checking the oil level or changing the oil in an automatic transmission, there are dirt particles or metal chips in the oil, it is necessary to diagnose or repair the automatic transmission at a specialized station. Maintenance VW.
