The engine oil requires periodic replacement. When choosing an engine oil, you should be guided by Renault's recommendations. During the warranty period of the vehicle, only the recommended brand and type of oil must be used. The engine life depends on the quality of the oil, so do not save on oil and oil filter and replace them in a timely manner.

A warning: Renault prohibits the addition of any additives to engine oil. The use of engine oil, even of a better quality, but not approved by the manufacturer, may cause a disclaimer of warranty obligations.

Oil viscosity versus ambient temperature

Checking the oil level

Low oil consumption is allowed during engine operation. The more often you check the level, the sooner you will notice an abnormal increase in oil consumption. This will allow you to identify and eliminate the malfunction in a timely manner.

Timely maintenance is a guarantee of the smooth functioning of vehicle components and systems. This statement is also true for the Renault Megan 2 model. Timeliness of service becomes especially relevant when it comes to changing the oil in the engine. Here, an important aspect is not only to fill in a high-quality product, but also to monitor its level and condition during the entire period of its use. In this article, we will tell you how the oil is changed, as well as how much oil to pour into the engine.

What are the nuances of choosing a liquid?

Lubricants used in Renault Megan 2 engines must necessarily fall under the regulations of classifiers according to the following criteria:

  • performance (API);
  • viscosity (SAE).

According to the AP category, only oils marked SL on the packaging should be poured into Renault Megan 2 engines of the first generation (manufactured before 2003), and SM or SN in units of the second generation (since 2004).

If an oil change is required, then it is recommended to choose oils designated as SM and SN for these purposes. These oils are endowed with more balanced lubricating and cleaning properties and allow the engine to deliver optimal performance characteristics.

Lubricants for Renault Megan 2 engines should be selected according to the main criterion, which is the vehicle's mileage:

  • if this new motor or with mileage less than 20% of a certain value (300,000 km, which is 100%) - you should fill in grease whose parameters meet the requirements of SAE 5W30 or 10W30 (all year round);
  • when the mileage has reached the mark of 25-75% (is 75,000 - 225,000 km) - we apply grease according to SAE classification:
  • 10W40 or 15W40 in summer;
  • 5W30 or 10W30 during the cold season (winter).
  • with solid mileage (75% or over 225,000 km), it is recommended to fill in fluid according to SAE:
  • 15W40 and 20W40 for summer;
  • SAE 5W40 and SAE 10W40 for the winter.

How Alternative option you can apply all-season grease (SAE 5W40) if the Renault Megan 2's mileage does not exceed 50 thousand km. Due to the minimal difference in viscosity, no damage will be caused to the motor.

Renault strongly recommends the use of ELF oils. This option is characterized by an optimal ratio of quality characteristics to the price parameter. You should also not ignore such manufacturers as:

  • Castrol;
  • Liqui MOLY etc.

When an oil change is being carried out, it is not recommended to resort to purchasing products from unknown manufacturers, even in spite of the persuasions of managers about the imaginary, highly praised parameters of an incomprehensible liquid that are still unknown to you. Remember how much oil to put in the engine. If you already have to purchase inexpensive oil, then you should lean towards brands that are heard by the vast army Renault owners Megane 2. Among them:

  • Lukoil;
  • Gazpromneft;
  • Mobil, etc.

The frequency, oil change is influenced by several factors:

  • operating conditions and modes;
  • driving manners;
  • processes of natural aging of a liquid with a loss of conditioned properties.

When do you need an oil change? It is recommended to change the lubricant in Renault Megan 2 with a mileage frequency of 8-10 thousand km or after a six-month period.

What does the replacement procedure look like?

  1. Changing the oil is not a complicated procedure; first, you should warm up the engine to the operating temperature parameter, and then turn it off. We drive Renault Megane 2 onto a lift or carry out work using a pit. We unscrew the filler cap on the motor. This is necessary to accelerate the process of oil drainage from the crankcase.
  2. We hang the car (or work out of the pit), unscrew the lower motor protection mount using a “8” square. We unscrew the drain plug on the pallet (not completely, leaving 2-3 turns). We substitute the appropriate container under the motor. We unscrew the plug completely and control the process of draining the spent liquid. After the bulk of the oil has flowed out, it begins to drip. We are waiting for the end of this process (on a 1.6 engine it will take no more than 15 minutes).
  3. Without screwing the drain plug, proceed to unscrew the oil filter. It must be replaced with a new one. To facilitate unscrewing the element body, use one of the tools:
    - a puller;
    - a screwdriver;
    - sandpaper, etc.

Remove the filter carefully, as it is filled with grease that may spill.

    1. Before installing a new filter, a number of procedures must be followed:
      - pour a certain amount of grease inside the new filter until the paper element is completely saturated and the cavity of the body is filled (this is necessary to prevent the formation of airlock after starting the engine);
      - lubricate the rubber ring around the perimeter of the element housing with oil;
      - clean the dirt from the seat on the motor for a new filter.
    2. Only use hand force to screw on the filter housing. The use of a puller or other devices is strongly discouraged.
  1. We replace the old sealing washer of the drain plug with new part... Tighten the plug with the recommended torque.
  2. Before filling in new oil, it is necessary to determine its volume. A 1.6 engine will require approximately 4 liters (5W-40 according to SAE). It is recommended to purchase a couple of liters more in order to further maintain the level within the required limits.
  3. After pouring, we stand for several minutes and check the liquid level in the motor with a dipstick. The optimum level will be located between the high and low marks on the dipstick itself. The ideal is slightly above the middle. Measurement should be done by placing the car on a horizontal plane.
  4. In the end, add liquid to the required level, twist the plug on the filler neck, and start the car. If the level is sufficient, the oil pressure control lamp is on dashboard turns off in five seconds or less.

If the motor requires flushing (for example, when choosing a product from another manufacturer, etc.), then the amount of flushing agent and the nuances of its use should be consulted.

How to control the level?

For accurate measurement, the procedure should be carried out on a cooled motor. This allows the maximum volume of liquid to drain into the sump. We take out the dipstick, wipe it with a dry and clean cloth. We lower the dipstick into the pallet until it stops. We take out the dipstick again and estimate the level value by the imprint of the oil film on the metal surface. If the level of the oil "marked" on the body of the dipstick is in the middle of the marked marks, then there is no reason for excitement and the motor is provided with a lubricant.

Already at the first withdrawal of the dipstick, it is possible to estimate how much oil to pour into the engine, as well as the quality of the oil by its appearance. If the color is golden and transparent, then there is no reason to worry. If there is a dark shade and opaque texture, the fluid should be replaced as soon as possible.

If the oil is completely black and opaque, an oil change is urgently required.

In order to avoid serious problems with your Renault Megane 2, pay proper attention to maintenance by timely performing all the required procedures, including knowing how much oil to pour into the engine. This will avoid significant financial investments.

The owners of the popular Renault Megane car are well aware of the advantages and disadvantages of this car. Thanks to the simple design of this model, you can perform maintenance on your own - for example, you can change the oil in the engine yourself. But this simple procedure is preceded by a much more difficult task - the choice of the oil itself. In addition, you need to know the volume of the liquid to be poured, as well as the best brands and parameters for them. There are indeed a lot of these theoretical information, but the main ones can be distinguished.

Replacement schedule

There is a certain frequency, which for Renault Megane is about 30 thousand kilometers. However, an oil change may be required earlier than this date set by the manufacturer. For example, the fluid change interval will have to be shortened if the fluid begins to emit a specific odor, contains metal shavings and has a dark brown color. All these signs indicate traces of mechanical wear, which usually appear at high mileage. In such cases, it is impossible to delay the oil change, otherwise you may encounter the following problems:

  • Lack of power, the engine is unable to operate at high revs
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Fuzzy engagement of gears, the transition to the next speed is accompanied by a noticeable delay
  • Poor cooling of engine components due to the fact that the oil has lost its useful properties
  • Motor components constantly overheat and fail prematurely

How to check the condition of the oil

To determine whether the oil really needs to be replaced with a fresher one, for this it is necessary to check the fluid level using a dipstick. So, if the level is insufficient, then you will have to add some oil. But if the above signs are found (black color, burning smell, metal shavings), one addition of fresh oil will not be enough.

Oil selection by parameters and brands

The French concern Renault-Nissan advises using the original for Megane lubricant Elf Evolution 900 5W / 40, or Elf NF 5W-40.
As for analogues, the following products can be distinguished here: Castrol Plus 5W-30, Mannol Elite 5W-40, as well as Total and Mobile 1.

Optimum viscosity characteristics of the oil for Renault Megane are SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-40. Thus, when choosing a brand, one should proceed from these parameters.

How much to fill

  • 1.4 K4J 16kl - 4.8 l
  • 1.6 K4M 16kl - 4.8l
  • 2.0 F4R 16kl - 5.4l
  • 1.5 K9K dCi - 4.5 L
  • 1.9 F9Q dCi with particle filter - 4.8 L

Oil types

  • Synthetic is the best motor oil available today. It is characterized by a high degree of fluidity, and also has outstanding anti-corrosion and non-stick properties. In addition, synthetics perfectly withstand low temperatures, and almost never freeze in winter. Synthetics are suitable for both summer and winter climates
  • Semi-synthetic - alternative synthetic oil... Recommended for Renault Megane with high mileage
  • Mineral is the cheapest oil. Only suitable for high mileage vehicles.

Thus, we can conclude that for Renault Megane the best option there will be synthetics or semi-synthetics.
