Evolution of the windshield washer system

It's hard to believe, but windshield washers began to appear on cars only in the second half of the twentieth century. Prior to that, drivers did without them, experiencing a lot of problems when driving in bad weather. The first cars in Russia, on which these devices were installed, were the products of the Gorky Automobile Plant.

Initially, the washer device was mechanical. To supply water to the glass, it was necessary to pull the handle, which was installed on the front panel. Then the mechanical pump began to be installed next to the main pedals, and to activate it, you had to press on it with your foot.

After some time, an electric pump was installed on cars. Since then, it was no longer necessary to stomp on the pedal or jerk the handle. Some time passed before the designers combined the inclusion of the washer with the automatic start of the wiper blades.

Following the pump, the washer nozzles also underwent evolution. Then they were called jets. In the middle of the twentieth century, there was usually only one jet. It was located on top, on the windshield frame, and supplied water only from the driver's side. Soon he migrated to the hood and got a partner. It turned out to be a design familiar to everyone today.

The windshield washer system includes:

The reservoir is located under the hood of the vehicle. Its volume may vary. Most often on passenger cars it ranges from two to five liters. As a rule, an electric pump is built into the tank.
