After completing the frame, the mesh is welded from below and to the side. The finished expeditionary is cleaned of burrs and scale, the metal is degreased and primed to avoid the formation of rust. After drying (at least a day), painting with waterproof enamel is carried out.

The cost price of such a product can fluctuate within 10 thousand, depending on whether you yourself will cook it or resort to the services of a welder.

The expedition luggage compartment has a lattice structure with reinforced sides to prevent load drops when shifting. A net located at the bottom of the compartment allows stowage of cargo, the strength of the structure allows for the movement of a person.

A less common roof rack is a closed case made of impact-resistant plastic (for example, made by Thule), which attaches to the arches. The box is equipped with a hinged lid with a lock and an automatic lifting mechanism for the top of the case.

Due to the high cost and low capacity, boxes are rarely used on UAZ Patriot cars. Also, a luggage basket attached to a tow bar is not often used. The product has a small capacity and impairs the geometric cross-country ability of the vehicle.

Since the UAZ Patriot car is not equipped with special rails for securing the trunk, water drain channels are used to hold the cargo basket on the roof of the car. The elements are located on the roof of the body and are partially covered with protective rubber seals.

For fixing, metal brackets of an L-shaped configuration are used, which cling to the flange of the gutter, and then are closed with a rubber seal.

The places where the supports are installed are spilled with an anti-corrosion agent. Then a lattice basket is installed on top, which is bolted to the supports. To adjust the position (in the case of different heights of the support points), additional washers are used, which are placed under the supports.

For fastening the guides, an embedded element is used, which is pressed with a special steel plate. All elements required for installation are supplied complete with arches.

The procedure for installing luggage rails on the roof of a UAZ Patriot car:

  1. Carry out a preliminary revision of the embedded element, reducing the length by 2-3 mm. For processing, a milling machine or hand tool equipped with a grinding wheel is used. At the same time, it is recommended to grind off sharp edges and burrs that damage the paint and rubber seal.
  2. Remove the protective rubber from the water channel and then push the cover plate into the groove to the desired position.
  3. Align the symmetrical position of the fasteners for the bows on the sides of the car. Then a pressure plate is placed over the plate, secured with 2 Phillips head screws. Additionally, you will need to cut a segment from the drain, which prevents the fastening from twisting.
  4. Treat the attachment point of the anchor points with an anti-corrosion agent.
  5. Reinstall the rubber pad, having previously cut out the central part located opposite the installed supports. The arc supports are placed on a rubber edging in which holes for bolts are drilled. Then arcs are placed on the supports, on which a luggage case is attached or additional cargo is placed (for example, skis or an inflatable boat).

The trunk bars are fixed with screws and nuts.

DIY expedition gutter rack

Algorithm self-made expeditionary trunk:

  1. Sketch a drawing of the future product, allowing you to determine the range and quantity of rolled metal for manufacturing. When developing the scheme, you should take into account the location of the attachment points on the roof of the machine, which are recommended to be located closer to the racks.
  2. Make a base and an upper support bar of the sides from a pipe of round or rectangular cross-section (symmetrical parts). Reinforcement bars and plates are welded to the base for installation on the roof of the machine.
  3. Connect the resulting frames with support jumpers, which are attached by arc welding. During installation, it is necessary to ensure a uniform gap between the parts.
  4. Install a mesh on the lower plane, which is made of steel wire with a diameter of 4-5 mm. Then additional fasteners are welded (for example, threaded bushings for attaching a jack or other tool).
  5. After the end of the welding work, the seams are cleaned, the finished trunk is covered with a layer of primer, and then painted. It is allowed to apply a zinc layer to the surface of the product by electroplating. Galvanized metal is highly resistant to corrosion.

Roof mount

The procedure for installing factory guides on the UAZ Patriot:

  1. Remove the interior roof lining. The panel is dismantled together with side handles and sun shields.
  2. Mark the attachment points of the standard guide arcs, it is recommended to study the structure of the car with the elements installed at the factory. The front support is located inside the gutter, and the mid and rear points are located on the side slopes of the roof surface. Reinforcement elements must be drilled together with the roof panel. To obtain a hole, a crown with an increased diameter is used, since through the channel the nuts for fastening the arcs are tightened.
  3. Treat the holes with an anti-corrosion compound.
  4. Fasten the arcs with bolts that fit into the threaded bushings in the supports. On the underside of the roof panel, support washers with an increased diameter are placed to reduce the load on the metal of the roof panel. Rubber gaskets are additionally treated with a sealant.

Disadvantages of Expedition Racks

The disadvantages of expeditionary type luggage compartments include:

  1. The increase in drag due to the installation of the luggage basket and additional items. An increase in resistance leads to an increase in fuel consumption, which is accompanied by a decrease in the dynamics of vehicle acceleration.
  2. An additional load on the roof shifts the center of gravity upwards. The off-road vehicle becomes susceptible to sharp turns. When installing a roof rack, take into account the reduced stability of the machine, which tip over at a lower tilt angle. This feature must be remembered both when driving on paved highways and when overcoming rough terrain.
  3. The extra weight of the basket and load negatively affects fuel consumption.
  4. An additional load on the roof increases the vehicle height. The increased dimensions should be taken into account when driving in tunnels or when parking a car in closed garages.
  5. Access to items in the luggage basket requires the installation of an additional ladder on the tailgate. The weight of the load and the trunk will deform the pillars of the body, which leads to problems with the operation of the door locks. Under excessive load, irreversible damage to the body occurs.

Despite the described shortcomings, expeditionary luggage carriers are widely used on UAZ Patriot SUVs.

Installation luggage compartment on the roof allows you to transport items up to 2-3 m long, as well as store additional tools.

Headlights are mounted on the front or rear edge of the basket, which are used to illuminate rough terrain in poor visibility conditions.
