What are car error codes, how are they generated and what to do when the error indicator comes on? These questions are often asked by car owners, especially those who have just recently purchased a car and are learning to drive.
All electronic control systems of a modern car have a self-diagnosis function, which informs the driver about emerging malfunctions. In fact, it turns out that on-board computers monitor not only the situation on the road, but almost everything internal processes that happen in the car. Such control and diagnostic systems may differ even in vehicles of the same make. However, the very principle of diagnostics remains unchanged: there is a continuous reading of signals from several dozen sensors, verification of the results obtained with the specified values and, most importantly, when an error is detected, its code is saved in the computer memory. In the future, the vehicle error codes can be read using on-board computer or specialized diagnostic equipment: adapters, scanners, other dealer devices.
OBD2 Error Codes by Car Make
The abbreviation OBD-II stands for the on-board self-control standard, which provides comprehensive engine control, allows monitoring of various additional systems, and controls the car control network. It was developed in the 90s and in many cases is a mandatory protocol for performing on-board diagnostics. Within this standard, manufacturers use various communication protocols with on-board electronic equipment, through a special 16-pin trapezoidal connector, which is located in the steering wheel area. Moreover, each diagnostic equipment is used for a specific brand or groups of cars. To illustrate, the following examples can be given:
- Honda HDS adapter with software and drivers - diagnoses Acura and Honda vehicles;
- professional scanner Bars IV - for FORD diagnostics, and if there are appropriate adapters - for other car brands, such as Toyota, Hyundai, Mazda, Mitsubihi, Nissan;
- dealer diagnostic scanner DST-14T, recommended by AvtoVAZ - allows you to quickly find and decipher the error code of a VAZ car.
The code itself consists of 5 characters: one capital Latin letter and a four-digit number.
The letter means:
- P - engine malfunction or automatic box gear;
- B - power windows, central locking, other body systems;
- C - problem with undercarriage auto;
- U - inter-unit communication bus.
First digit of the code:
- 0 - position provided for ELM327 adapters;
- 1, 2 - positions for the manufacturer's code;
- 3 - reserve.
Second digit:
- 1, 2 - mixture formation;
- 3 - elements of the ignition system;
- 4 - additional systems;
- 5 - control of systems that ensure stability idle move;
- 6 - malfunction in the control unit;
- 7, 8, 9 - transmission control;
- 10, 20 - codes set by the manufacturer, depending on the car brand.
The third and fourth digits are the number of the specific malfunction. Error codes of cars that support this protocol are divided into two categories: general or, as they are also called, basic - common for all cars and extended or additional error codes for car brands, significantly expanding diagnostic capabilities.
Car error codes program
In order to quickly determine the location of a car malfunction, it is not enough to have diagnostic equipment and a laptop. It is required to install the vehicle error codes program. As a rule, it is supplied complete with diagnostic equipment. Today there are a lot of such programs, so every car owner can choose a utility for any platform, from Windows to Android. With their help, you can quickly find out OBD-2 error codes on the go. For example, using the Elm327 Bluetooth adapter by connecting it to the OBD-II diagnostic connector and using a special application for Android, you can easily get a list of error codes on your smartphone and find out what each of them means.
Having knowledge of car error codes, being able to receive and decipher them, you can always keep your finger on the pulse and respond in time to emerging malfunctions.
OBD (from English "on board diagnostic") is translated into Russian as "on-board diagnostics". At its core, OBD-2 is a technology for detecting a malfunction of a car or its separate unit using a diagnostic device. This device connects the vehicle's on-board computer with a laptop, personal computer or other similar device in order to identify existing faults.
OBD-2 appeared at the end of the 20th century in the United States of America. The US government has found that the automotive industry it supports has a negative impact on the environment and humanity. In order to mitigate this influence, a law was passed that required the installation of a system in electronic control units for vehicles that controls the operation of the engine, directly or indirectly affecting the composition of the exhaust gas.
The same law provides for a protocol for reading information about inconsistencies in environmental parameters in engine operation and other information on vehicle diagnostics.
So what is OBD-2 now? OBD-2 is a system that reads and accumulates the necessary information about the work of all automotive systems... The initial environmental specificity of OBD-2 limited its use for diagnosing all vehicle malfunctions. Over time, the capabilities of this system have expanded, and it has become widespread not only in the United States, but also in cars manufactured in other countries of the world. In the United States, diagnostic equipment that works under the OBD-2 protocol has been used on a mandatory basis since 1996. This rule applies not only to cars that were produced in this country, but also to imported cars sold in America. After some time, the use of OBD-2 has acquired the status of an international standard, and this system has become popular in all countries of the world.
OBD-2 has gained such widespread popularity due to the fact that it facilitated the work of auto services to diagnose and troubleshoot vehicles. Of course, because OBD-2 makes it possible to monitor all control systems of a car and even some systems that do not relate to control, for example, body, chassis, etc. OBD-2 also allows you to read codes of existing malfunctions and monitor vehicle statistics (average speed of a car, number of revolutions per minute, etc.).
Before the advent of OBD-2, the communication protocol, diagnostic connector and its location were very different for each car manufacturer. As a result, the car repair technician had to first look for a long time for the location of the connector, and then also select the right equipment. Even large auto repair shops cannot afford to have all types of diagnostic devices in stock.
After the appearance of OBD-2, the type of diagnostic connector in each car began to be made the same and placed in a certain and easily accessible place, most often at the ignition key or in the glove compartment of the car. Video: ELM327 OBD 2
"Pinout"
Despite the fact that the OBD-2 system is standardized, car manufacturers still have some freedom in developing protocols, so the "pinout" for some car brands may differ. OBD-2 uses several standards at once: ISO9141-2 (all European cars, most Japanese and Chrysler), J1850 VPW (American GM models), J1850 PWM (Ford), J2234 (CAN). Each of the listed standards works with a group of cars, the composition of which is strictly defined. Car service workers must know the composition of each such group. In place of the diagnostic connector, there are contacts for each of the standards. In professional auto scanners, there are many connectors and adapters that are suitable for each specific vehicle.
At its core, the OBD-2 pinout is the standardized requirements and rules that car manufacturers must comply with in order for the vehicle management system to comply with the requirements of the rules and laws that concern smooth operation vehicle and quantity exhaust gases From him.
The pinout of the sixteen OBD-2 connectors is provided by the following components:
Contact 1 | Formed by the manufacturer |
Contact 2 | |

Error codes
The error code consists of five characters, each of which has its own meaning:
First sign:
- P - the functioning of the engine and automatic transmission;
- B - the functioning of "body systems" (power windows, central locking, airbags);
- C - running gear functioning;
- U - a system of interaction between electronic units (for example, to the CAN bus).
Second sign:
- 0 - common code for OBD-2;
- 1 and 2 - manufacturer's code;
- 3 - reserve.
The third sign indicating the type of breakdown:
- air supply or fuel system;
- ignition system;
- auxiliary control;
- idling;
- ECU or its circuit;
- transmission;
- transmission.
The fourth and fifth characters are the sequential error numbers.
Also, in the description of errors, the words Bank1, Bank2 are sometimes found. These are the designations of the exhaust pipe. If the car has a normal engine, then Bank1 is used, and if the car has two exhaust pipes, then one is designated Bank1, and the second Bank2.
Programs
In order to diagnose a car malfunction, it is not enough to have an OBD-2 device and a computer or laptop. It is necessary to install a special program, which will become a connecting link for diagnosing problems with your car. Many manufacturers of OBD-2 devices supply such programs bundled with the device, but they are often very inconvenient to use, too complicated and do not have a Russian-language menu. Therefore, most users are trying to find a more convenient version of such a program on the Internet. Indeed, the World Wide Web makes it possible to download such utilities for every taste and for any platform, from Windows to Android and MacOS.
OBD-2 software for iOS
iPhoneapplication is the leader in iPhone and iPad software. This program works exclusively with ELM327 and OBD-2 adapters that have Wi-Fi capability. iPhoneapplication is a professional application. The main advantage of this program is its mobility, which makes it possible to diagnose your car at a convenient time and place. iPhoneapplication can scan not only the engine, but also the airbag system, gearbox, can track the temperature of the cooling system, the level of oil and other fluids.
Another easy-to-use program for iOS is DashCommand. In terms of its functions, it is not inferior to the first utility, but it only works with ELM327 with Wi-Fi. DashCommand has a convenient and pleasant design, makes it possible to clear the list of errors, can track fuel consumption and even calculate the cost of a trip if you indicate the cost of one liter of fuel. This app also has an Android version.
Both programs can be downloaded and installed on your device via the iTunes application. Their only rather weighty drawback is the lack of a Russian-language version. Video ELM327 WiFi OBD 2 IPhone Setup Demo on Subaru Impreza:
OBD-2 software for Android
Torque is the leader among the programs on the Android operating system for diagnosing car problems. This program works with a Bluetooth enabled ELM327 device. This program has collected all possible functions that are limited only by the capabilities of your vehicle(the number of sensors installed in it and electronic systems). After installing this program, the device you are using will be able to measure the torque of the car, work as a speedometer and tachometer, etc. Torque has a beautiful interface design that will not leave anyone indifferent.
This utility has the ability to read the list of logs from the car's on-board computer, gives an error code and brief information about it. The application has a GPS tracker, which makes it possible to find out where and when the car was, if the car was in motion, then the GPS tracker can tell you how fast the car was moving at any time and on any part of the path. Torque has a version in Russian, which makes it very easy to work with. Video: Connecting OBD2 adapter to Ca-Fi Android car radio:
OBD-2 software for Windows
The advantage of applications for Windows systems is protection from extraneous connection, since the connection with OBD2 adapters is via USB. The most popular and convenient program for car diagnostics is ScanTool. The program has a wide error base with a full description. ScanTool has a Russian-language version.
Another convenient program is MyTester. It works great with domestically produced cars (GAZ, UAZ, VAZ), because it was developed specifically for them. This program works with ELM327. MyTester will help you find out fuel consumption, the temperature of the cooling systems, the level of air pollution from the exhaust gases of your car and much more.

By choosing and installing one of the above programs, you can make an independent diagnosis of your car at a convenient time for you.
Important! Before deleting the log file with errors from your on-board computer, make sure that they are not serious and will not lead to major problems.
Probably every car owner with injection engine faced various errors in the operation of this unit. Such a nuisance is indicated by the corresponding sign on the instrument panel - "engine error". Many will immediately go to the service station for diagnostics, while others will go with this problem. But the third group of people will certainly be interested in the reasons and decoding of the codes.
ECU in cars
The work of the mentioned part is invisible, but this unit starts immediately after the driver turns on the engine.
In some car models, the electronics monitors the parameters even after stopping the car.
Each ECU on any car is equipped with a special controller, which, when it detects various malfunctions, responds to them by lighting an indicator - "engine error". Each error has its own code and remains in the computer memory. Some problems are not only completely saved, but the time of their detection by the system is also recorded. This option is referred to as "freeze frame".
- causes
The error light on dashboard just one. However, there can be many reasons for them. This can be found out without special equipment or a trip to the service station.
Lambda probe
The oxygen sensor is part of the exhaust gas treatment system. It checks how much oxygen has not burned out in the engine cylinders. The lambda probe also monitors fuel consumption.
Various malfunctions of the named sensor do not allow the ECU to receive information from it. Sometimes this element gives incorrect information. Such breakdowns can increase or decrease fuel consumption and reduce engine power. On most modern cars there are from two to four such sensors.
Among the reasons for the failure of the described element is its contamination with used oil or oil soot. This reduces the accuracy of reading information for regulating the fuel mixture and determining the optimal fuel consumption.
Fuel filler cap
Most drivers, when an error occurs, always think about the existence of very serious problems. But few people think to check if the fuel system is tight. But this very tightness can be easily broken by an insufficiently tightly closed gas tank lid. And this is a fairly common situation!
And what does the engine error have to do with it? The fact is that when the lid is not tightly closed, air enters the system, which increases fuel consumption. The diagnostic system generates an error because of this.
Catalyst
VAZ
For self-diagnosis of the VAZ, you can also use the diagnostic connector, but it is permissible to do this with the help of a car. To do this, you need to hold down the odometer button, then turn the key to the first position, then the button is released. After that, arrows will jump.
Then the odometer is pressed again - the driver will see the firmware number. When pressed a third time, a diagnostic code can be obtained. Any error of the VAZ engine in the car will be presented in the form of two numbers, not four. You can decipher them according to the corresponding tables.
The information provided can help experienced and novice car enthusiasts better understand their car. Errors occur from time to time, but the main thing is to be able to eliminate them in time. Earlier in Soviet cars there were no such options, and the driver could not know what the engine was "swearing at". Today, there are many opportunities for diagnostics, repair, and condition monitoring. And with the help of modern software, there is nothing easier than figuring out how to reset the engine error from the ECU memory.
This article contains error codes for OBD2 cars and their decoding in Russian, including error codes not only for the engine management system, but also body and suspension error codes.
A long time ago, American automakers, puzzled by checking the assembly of their cars, put a person at the end of each assembly line with an electronic device that made it possible to quickly check the build quality of each car and quickly detect possible defects.
This is how the well-known diagnostic scanner and diagnostic equipment was born.
Automotive Scanner
Then this miracle device appeared in repair shops and was very helpful to repairmen in diagnosing car malfunctions.
The use of this device was quickly noticed by car manufacturers around the world and began to implement these technologies in their production. But, as always happens, everyone went their own way and it turned out that the diagnostician at the service station had to have twenty bags of scanners in order to diagnose different brands of cars.
And then again the Americans came up with a rational idea - to make one standard and install it on all American cars.
So was born OBD- On-Board Diagnostics
In 1996, the OBD2 ruleset appeared. They included a single connector and a single data exchange protocol. Also, the Americans set a condition - all cars sold in the USA must comply with OBD2.
This spurred European manufacturers to follow this path as well and, as a result, in 2001 a European common set of rules appeared - EOBD
OBD2 error codes
The standardization also affected the car error codes according to the OBD2 rule sets, which made the life of the modern diagnostician much easier. This standardization is relevant to this day.
Each character in the error code carries specific information.
And the whole code consists of a letter and four numbers.
The letters of the vehicle malfunction code mean:
- B - malfunction of body systems (airbags, central locking, power windows)
- C - chassis malfunctions (ABS, anti-skid, etc.)
- R - power plant (engine, gearbox)
- U - malfunctions of the data exchange system
The first digit in the error code means:
- 0 - SAE common to all manufacturers. That is, if the code starts from zero, then this error is common for all cars. different brands
- 1,2 - OEM, factory and factory installed
- 3 - reserved
The second digit in the error code means:
- 1, 2 - fuel system and air supply
- 3 - ignition system
- 4 - reducing the toxicity of exhaust gases
- 5 - idle
- 6 - ECU or its circuits
- 7, 8 - transmission (automatic transmission)
The third and fourth digits in the code indicate the error code itself.
For example, let's analyze the car error code P0301
- P - malfunction in power plant(engine)
- 0 means this code is suitable for all OBD2 vehicles
- 3 - a problem in the ignition system
- 01 - directly the malfunction code - misfire in the first cylinder
OBD2 error codes in Russian
What, in fact, is the essence of this article?
The fact is that sometimes some "rare" code is missing in the error codes of different manufacturers. We have in the community, but on different ECUs and engines, not all codes can be used in designations, which sometimes confuses inexperienced motorists. This also applies to other car manufacturers.
Therefore, if you did not find the error code in the table for your car, then look in this table with common codes for different car brands. Perhaps this is where you will find what you were looking for.
The translation is clumsy here and there, but the direction of troubleshooting can be understood
