What discs were installed on various bodies and configurations

The VAZ-2109 car is a 5-door version of the VAZ-2108. During the entire production period, from 1987 to 2004, the car has undergone 7 modifications, including options for export. The parameters of their disks also changed, despite the fact that the bolt pattern has always remained unchanged. These differences were expressed in the choice of the width of the rim, in the size of the overhang and in three options for the diameter of the circle.

But in the factory, usually only discs with a diameter of 13 inches were installed. R14 and R15 rims were considered only fit for installation. Here are the two main brands wheel rims with which cars were equipped on the factory conveyor:

  • 5Jx13 ET35;
  • 5Jx13 ET40.

The first numbers of the marking mean the width of the rim, 13 is the total diameter, ET35-40 is the overhang in mm. The factory standard disc design was a stamped steel product. Losing to its cast light-alloy competitors in a number of indicators, steel stamping has always been and remains strong, inexpensive and reliable.

Standard wheel sizes

The main specifications wheel disks of any car, including the VAZ-2109, are expressed by the following parameters:

  • Diameter. This refers to the size of the rim in inches, excluding the tire.
  • Rim Width - The size of the seat for the tire in inches.
  • The size of the center hole for the hub.
  • Ramping is a parameter indicating the number of holes and the size of the diameter of the circle joining their center points.
  • Departure - the distance between the mounting surface of the hub and an imaginary plane passing vertically through the middle circumference of the disc.

In the VAZ-2109, two parameters were always the same:

  1. Center hole 58.5 mm.
  2. Razboltovka - 4x98.

The wheels are manufactured in three versions: R13, R14 and R15. The rest of the factory parameters, taking into account the corresponding tires, are indicated in the table.

Parameters of standard nuts

Fastening a cast disc to the hub involves the use of special bolts or nuts. It should be noted that nuts from stamped discs are unacceptable here. Firstly, because in cast specimens, the tapered or spherical part of the fastener is more pronounced than in stamped ones.

For example, the tapered portion of a bolt or nut has an angle of 60 degrees. This is done in order to increase their contact area with a material softer than steel. Secondly, the die is thinner than the casting, and when replacing the disc, the length of the bolt simply will not be enough.

It is better to immediately use the fastener that matches the applied alloy wheel otherwise deformation of the holes, crumbling and scratches are possible.

By saving on the necessary nuts or bolts, you can irrevocably damage a more expensive element.

The softness of the metal also implies regular checks of the tightness of the fastener, especially at first and with new discs, when the material has not yet compacted from the workloads. Otherwise, the nuts may spontaneously loosen under the influence of cyclic shock and vibration.

The nuts must have tapered or spherical washers. It is necessary to ensure that the profile of the washers fits exactly into the corresponding recess in the hole of the disc to be installed. Some disc models are designed to use cylindrical mountings with flat washers.

What drives can be installed

When planning to replace old steel wheels with light-alloy ones, you should choose either original products or products from well-known manufacturers who care about the quality and safety of their goods.

Alloy wheels combine the following useful properties: they are light, practical to use, endowed with sufficient strength and have an attractive look, which is aimed at transforming everything external appearance car.

Most common among alloy wheels are aluminum products. This is due to the fact that they are resistant to corrosion, meet the strength requirements and, in comparison with other alloy wheels, remain relatively inexpensive.

Titanium alloy is the most expensive option. It also meets all the technical characteristics, but at the same time it still has a more attractive appearance. In third place is the magnesium alloy option.

In the latest models from AvtoVAZ, discs with a 4x100 mounting pattern are used. When installing them on a 4x98 hub, use eccentric studs to compensate for the 2mm difference. To install discs with other mounting schemes, you will have to use the appropriate adapters (spacers).

It must be understood that the installation of discs larger than 15 inches is impossible without interfering with the structure of the car.

Maximum and minimum acceptable parameters of non-standard disks

The size of the wheel arches on the VAZ 2109 limits the ability to install discs with a diameter larger than R15. It turns out that any non-standard specimen must fit into the 13-15 inch dimensional frame. Looking for something smaller is impractical, and to install a larger diameter, you will need to increase the wheel arch, that is, change the body structure.

Limiting ourselves to the given parameters of the arch, you need to look at the rest of the indicators of the non-standard disk. To connect parts with different bolt patterns, adapter spacers can be used. In this case, the problem of incompatibility of the disc with the hub along the holes is quite easily solved.

The main thing is to choose suitable mounts. The width of the rim, according to the limits set by the designers of VAZ, is limited to 4-7 inches. Exceeding these parameters may impair vehicle handling and raise questions during registration.

The overhang of a disc is directly related to its width and design. In the factory assembly, this figure ranged from 30 to 45 mm. You can change the offset using spacers.

But it must be remembered that with a decrease in the offset value, the track width increases, while wide tires can go beyond the established ones. dimensions car. The center hole of the non-standard disc must be at least 58.5 mm.

Although the options for replacing disks on the VAZ-2109 are limited to certain parameters, there are still quite a few of them. But, first of all, you should still pay attention to the original, maximally adapted to this vehicle products. It is easier, safer, and more profitable from a financial point of view.

On VAZ 2109 cars, 13-inch discs are used. Therefore, if you saw R13 on your tires, then this is just an indication of the diameter of the disc.
However, in addition to the diameter of the disc, there are other important parameters:

Disc diameter - everything is clear here, this is the diameter inside the disc on which the tire will be installed.
Rim Width - the width inside the rim that the tire will be mounted on.
ET-disc outage. A parameter showing how deep the disc will be sunk into the car's arch.
PCD - the number of mounting holes and the distance between them.
DIA is the diameter of the center hole of the wheel disc.

The diameter and width of the disc are important because if you do not take them into account, then the standard VAZ rubber will not fit on this disc. PCD is very important, if you take a disc with any other PCD, then you simply cannot screw it to the hub. Either the number of holes will be wrong, or the distance between these holes is not exactly 98 mm. The bolts will not fall into the holes on the hub, and if they do, the disc will warp during compression. There are many discussions on the Internet about this. For example, disks from Renault Laguna with a diameter of 13 inches have a PCD of not 98 x 4, but 100 x 4. This means that the distance between the holes in the disk is not VAZ 98 mm, but 100 mm. The subject of the dispute is as follows: some argue that this is all nonsense, carefully squeeze the bolts when installing in a criss-cross pattern and go to health. Others argue that this is not worth doing - the disc will become uneven and the car will shake when driving. We are all different people, and what is good for one person may be bad for another. One will drive with a broken suspension on such discs and not pay attention to the fact that the car shakes. Another person will notice even minor vibrations when the vehicle is moving. The reason for the vibrations is as follows: due to an uneven fit (even fractions of a millimeter play a role), the wheel on a disc with PCD 100 on a hub with holes of 98 x 4 rotates not in a circle, but in an ellipse. That is, the center of the axle of the car will not coincide with the center of the disc, but here the supporters of 100 x 4 discs will again object - there are special bolts
with eccentrics:

It makes sense to use eccentric bolts if you install alloy wheels. The reason is as follows: stamped used disc in good condition on a VAZ 2109 it costs about $ 10. And one eccentric bolt costs about $ 2-3. That is, it turns out that four eccentric bolts cost the same as the disc itself.

But even more "cool" tires 195/55 R15 and 205/50 R15 are installed only on the front axle or simultaneously with the modification of the suspension or wheel arches.

Based on the operating experience of the "overhauled" "Samar" we can say that the recommended tire size for R15 rims is 195/50, and for R14 - 185/60.

Let us also remind that for any "VAZ" disks the diameter of the circumference of the location of the four mounting bolts (PSD) is 98 mm, which is coded as 4x98 in the catalogs. The diameter of the central hole in the discs for Togliatti machines should not be less than 58.5 mm.

Fitting low-profile tires improves the vehicle's handling when maneuvering and speeds up cornering. Low tire beads are less crumpled under lateral loads on the tire, and the steering wheel becomes "sharper" and the car deviates less from the trajectory. At the factory, VAZ 2109 is equipped with discs with dimensions 175/70 R13. Unfortunately, they don't look very attractive. They need to wear rubber with a large profile. Rims with a small diameter are practically invisible behind such a tire.

R14 wheels are allowed to be mounted on the model:

  • 2109,
  • 2108,
  • 21099,
  • 2114,

On all vehicles, rim width should not exceed 6 inches. In this case, the overhang should be within 35-40 millimeters.

It is allowed to install cast products, as well as forged structures, with the above parameters. The center hole for the discs should be more than or equal to 58.5 millimeters.

For such models, you will have to specially select rubber so that after its installation there is no change in the diameter of the wheel. Otherwise, when the car starts to turn, the tire may touch the suspension parts, possibly touching the wheel arch liners.

Experts advise to install tires with dimensions on R14 wheels:

  • 175/65 R14,
  • 185/60 R14.

The final option is considered more preferable.

Diameter calculation

In principle, each driver can calculate the wheel diameter independently. To do this, he must be good at deciphering the existing rubber markings, for example, we calculate a wheel with dimensions 175/70 R13 for a nine:

  • 175 - tire width indicator (mm).
  • 70 is the size of the tread height. A percentage of the existing width is taken. In this example: 175x0.7 = 122.5 mm.
  • R13 is the diameter of the disc. Calculated: 13 x 25.4 = 330 millimeters.

To obtain the diameter of the wheel, it is necessary to fold disc diameter with the profile height multiplied by two:

330 + 122.5 x 2 = 575 mm.

If you calculate the other wheels, you get:

  • 175/65 R14 - 583,
  • 185/60 R14 - 577 mm.

The last option is considered the most optimal. The tire is ten millimeters wider. The contact patch of such rubber is much larger, which means that the braking distance will decrease.

The car will be more stable and much easier to drive. Rubber will not wrinkle when cornering at high speed.

However, with all the positive aspects, there are several disadvantages. The wide tire has an aquaplaning effect when driving at high speed. There is no such effect on narrow tires.

In the cabin, shocks will be felt from hitting potholes due to the low profile height. The recommended dimensions of the discs must be indicated in the technical documentation of the car.

Large disc elements

Discs with large size(15 inches) can be installed on "Samara". However, the manufacturer does not recommend doing this, therefore, problems may occur when passing a technical inspection.

The tire 185/55 R15 is suitable for such wheels. Of course, you can try to install 195/50 R15. Before installation, it is imperative to carry out all measurements. It is possible that the wheel will start to "rub", since the width of the rubber is too large.
