Can two companies, whose annual sales turnover are incommensurable, offer a product that is equally interesting and equivalent in terms of its consumer characteristics?

After all, no one will deny that the small company Subaru by world standards, which produces a little more than half a million cars a year, in some market segments very successfully competes with the giant Toyota, which has long been considered automotive manufacturer number one in the world. Take the Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester crossovers. On our roads, they are found equally often. But which one is better?

The RAV4 crossover was considered a women's car at all times. It just so happened that Toyota designers offered smooth lines and a calm appearance to motorists. Men did not seem very attractive to all this, but the representatives of the beautiful half of humanity liked it.

A man buying a RAV4 in Russia was considered, how to put it ... a little weird. Usually "rafik" was taken to the spouses, and the men continued to ride something more brutal. And finally, when working on the appearance of the latest generation Toyota RAV4, Toyota decided to make a real revolution. The feminine lines were replaced by sharp corners and pronounced edges. So from now on, the Toyota RAV4 is great not only for women, but also for men. No wonder the last behind the wheel of a Japanese crossover has recently become much more.

But the Forester in previous generations was definitely a man's car. Precisely not youthful, but confidently masculine. With its ego and testosterone charge. And now even more so. And you can't say that Forester impresses with some bright or aggressive solutions. Not at all. His Japanese-style appearance is restrained. For the sake of economy appearance Was “subarika” always quite ascetic? I doubt it ... Keep in mind that currently the cost of the "forester" starts from 1.6 million rubles, and in a good configuration it goes for 2 million. Yes, the price is not encouraging, but the car itself pleases the owners - it is still produced in Japan. The buzz of Subaru in drive and reliability, in the same quality from year to year. Yes, and of course, in terms of durability - Rav4 and Forester breathe head to head.

In the restraint of Subaru, literally from the very first seconds of acquaintance with the Japanese crossover, one can feel strength and confidence. In the Subaru lineup, the Subaru Forester is an iconic model. It is iconic in terms of daily use and versatility (this is not a WRX for you to drive without a family and jump over bumps). Forike is easy to drive. Drive everywhere without worrying about the road surface. Yes, this is not a full-fledged off-road vehicle, but how often do they climb on "plowing" with their families? Potential Subaru Forester buyers will be pleased to hear that the crossover has been updated a bit this year. Here are just external differences from the "pre-styling" model is difficult to find.

What has changed? The "skirt" of the bumper has changed - there are lower gray plastic insertion lines near the fog lights. Slightly changed the lines of the head light with LED edging. Plus a little changed the radiator grille. It should be noted that Subaru is equipped with an excellent LED head light, which pleases the eye in dark time days and in bad weather. At the back, the lanterns remain of the old form, but their filling has changed "cosmetically". The feed has remained the same, but the design of alloy wheels has been updated, which, although controversial from the point of view of borrowing from the Korean "brothers", but looks very organic with the rest of the car.

There are differences inside too. They are also minor. Most Forester buyers have complained that the car's interior looks painfully modest. That is why, during the update, the Japanese tried to make it more interesting. As a result, the Forester has got a new three-spoke steering wheel and silver trimmed air ducts. The first thing you notice is the new screen of the multimedia system with an abundance of black lacquer details around. I must say that the quality of graphics and multimedia content leaves much to be desired ...

Not to say that the above changes radically transformed the interior of the "forester", but it looked really nicer, although it retained its asceticism. As for the convenience of using the controls and ergonomics in general, the Subaru Forester had no problems with this before. Questions are only raised by the picture quality of the rear-view camera and the complete absence of parking sensors (front and rear). Why they are not there is a mystery of the century. Perhaps because the "blondes" do not buy this "device", and the others simply do not need it due to the first-class visibility.

Finally, Subaru has a heated steering wheel! In the interior options, there is a traditional heated front and rear seats (dual-band), and (in our configuration) there was a memory function for two positions for the driver's seat. There is a retractable armrest in the cabin, two USB and one AUX connectors. The dashboard remained in the old style, probably because it did not cause any complaints from anyone. Perforated leather handles and lacquered black inserts appeared on the doors. Still, the inside of the car has become more modern, although not pretentious. The designers did not follow the path of a revolutionary change in corporate identity.

Toyota RAV4 inside is different. While the Forester's center console is a simple vertical plane, Toyota uses a much more interesting two-story architecture. Nice and stylish steering wheel with three spokes. However, the Subaru Forester is no worse. Both Japanese crossovers are at about the same level in terms of the quality of finishing materials. If desired, hard plastic can be found in each of the cars. So the volume of production is in volume, but so far we have to admit that both crossovers are very worthy rivals of each other.

The rear of the Toyota RAV4 has plenty of room. Even for those passengers whose height is close to two meters, the second row of seats in a Japanese crossover will be quite comfortable. The situation is exactly the same in the rear seats of the Subaru Forester. A tall man is quietly sitting on the back sofa and does not feel any discomfort. For children, this is a "playroom" at all. And there is nothing surprising in this, since both crossovers differ in their dimensions by literally a couple of centimeters. The Toyota RAV4 is 4570 mm long, while the Forester is just 25 mm longer. But in terms of trunk volume, the Toyota RAV4 is several tens of liters ahead - 547 liters versus 505 for Subaru. The trunk of Subaru will be enough for you, besides it is very convenient, and the tailgate is equipped with an electric drive. The Toyota RAV4 will take the lead even when the rear seat backs are folded down. Although in this case it is hardly possible to notice the difference with the naked eye. In Subaru, the luggage compartment will increase to 1,577 liters, and in the RAV4, approximately 30 liters more will be reserved for things. The Subaru also has factory dark tinted “behind”, which adds a little coziness to the “inhabitants” of the rear row of seats.

Basic versions of the Japanese crossovers will have a two-liter gasoline engine under the hood, which in the case of Subaru will develop 150 Horse power, and in the case of Toyota RAV4 it is 4 "horses" less. That's just if the most affordable Toyota will have mechanical box After the upgrade, Subaru Forester does not offer "mechanics" for its customers in principle after the upgrade to gear changes and drive only to the front wheels. As well as front-wheel drive. CVT only and only four-wheel drive- branded symmetrical four-wheel drive with an additional x-mode function for off-road. It is he who gives a feeling of confidence and security. However, as is often the case, there is one small catch. Subaru is more expensive. The base Forester costs the same as a Toyota RAV4 with CVT and AWD. And now the comparison between the two crossovers seems quite correct. In addition, it is these versions that are most popular in our market.

Both cars come with four-wheel drive. The only difference is that the RAV4 has an automatic transmission and the Forester has a CVT. We had a Forester on the test with naturally aspirated engine volume of 2.5 liters, consuming only 8 real liters per 100 km. mileage, while the Toyota RAV4 will burn 11.4 liters. Subaru has a very good torque, the car behaves briskly on the road and in the stream you do not feel "cottoniness" even with a CVT. It should be noted that the "forik" has a very comfortable suspension, which swallows all the irregularities and flaws of domestic highways and field directions. The RAV4 is still more tight and more urban. Under the hood of Subaru, everything is simple and "open" for repair (there are no plastic plates). Everything is clear and concise.

For fans of Subaru Forester, there are three engine options on the market: 2-liter 150 hp, 2.5 liters. 171 h.p. and a 2-liter turbocharged 241 hp. and that is all. Diesel power units in our market are not offered. Still, 2.5 liters is the best choice for most consumers. But "Toyota" dared to offer another interesting option in our country - a diesel crossover, the engine of which, with a volume of 2.2 liters, develops 150 horsepower. Now attention! WITH diesel engine the Japanese crossover gains the first hundred kilometers per hour in exactly 10 seconds, and with the same power gasoline Toyota engine The RAV4 does the same exercise in 11.3 seconds. That is, the diesel crossover outright wins in dynamics over the gasoline version of the same power. Including on maximum speed- 185 versus 180 kilometers per hour. So call diesel cars sluggish after that.

In motion, both crossovers delight with behavior that is absolutely predictable in any conditions. The only difference is that the Subaru Forester is more geared towards gambling driving (the car accelerates very quickly), and Toyota engineers, when adjusting the suspension and steering of the RAV4, relied on comfort. Steering it is slightly less informative and is in no hurry to convey to the driver absolutely all the information about what is happening with the car. And this is quite consistent with the image inherent in the cars of each brand. Toyota is calmness behind the wheel and the notorious Japanese reliability, Subaru - cars with "pepper", fanned with the glory of past sporting victories. Although Subaru has excellent soundproofing, you can't say at all that this is a sports car. Rather, he is still a family one. If you drive a car calmly, then "forik" behaves quite comfortably.

How to sum up our comparative test? Both cars have evolved to suit the times, but have not changed their "niches" in the market. The RAV4 has become a little less feminine and elegant, and Subaru continues to delight men. Price tags have grown significantly in parallel with the improvement of tactical and technical characteristics. It is difficult to choose an unambiguous leader - both Japanese are good. As the saying goes, "there are no comrades for taste and color." Buy both cars for your family and rejoice depending on their mood different characters feeling inside the cabin security, comfort and reliability!

Perhaps these bright crossovers do not at all look like the unfortunate people from Repin's painting. But what they do is comparable to the hard work of hard workers pulling a barge against the tide. Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester are leading in sales in the lineup of their companies. It is they who keep the Japanese brands afloat, preventing them from running aground in the shallow water of the fallen market. Each of them has certain advantages designed for its customer. Let's try to figure out which ones, using the example of very similar cars: 2.5-liter engines, two pedals, four-wheel drive and rich configurations.

External updates for Forester - nothing at all: a front bumper and a radiator grille of a different shape, LED "dimensions", a new design of R17 wheel rims and a Sepia Bronze Metallic body color. Together, this made the car visually closer to the flagship Outback.

The first trump card is simply being a class. compact crossovers, which are now the most popular product for most brands. Although compact RAV4 and Forester were at the very beginning of their "career", more than 20 years ago, and now with a length of 4605 and 4610 mm, respectively, they can be called such a stretch. And the CX-5 immediately hit the optimal size (length 4870 mm), because the first crossover model appeared only in 2011. Decent dimensions and wheelbase length (the spread is only 6 cm - from 2640 mm for Subaru to 2700 mm for Mazda) make these cars versatile in terms of comfort - driving, passenger and cargo. These are no longer the fan cars on which young people only ride along the beach, but quite adult cars suitable for everyone and for everything. They are able to transport sports equipment, bags from supermarkets, garden tools, and a baby stroller. All this turns out to be extremely harmonious and suits people of various statuses.

I had to look at the new RAV4 a year ago in Finland, where there were a lot of these cars. Finns, like most northerners, appreciated the striking design, preferring the equally striking performance in turquoise, white and red. It's a pity that the first option left the Russian market.

You can look at each of the cars for a long time and enjoy. Attractiveness is one of the most important assets of our trinity. Moreover, each car has its own, special. Having gone through two restyling, the fourth generation Subaru looks like a forester after several sessions in a barbershop - the brutality has not diminished, but the style is impeccable. Toyota is challenging with its clean lines and futuristic design: the RAV4 has never been so boring! Of course, not everyone likes this expressionism, but it will not leave anyone indifferent either. Mazda is so attractive and confident in its iridescence, reminiscent of silk and marble at the same time, that it becomes like a beautiful woman with a perfect figure, hair and makeup, which does not care how old she is. And at 20 and 40, she will be able to present herself in such a way that she will outshine the fashionista, hung with diamonds.

CX-5 designer Masashi Nakayama has managed to create a car that has remained attractive for 6 years and can be considered a long-liver by modern standards. True, there is a feeling that it attracts mainly women, although official sales statistics suggest otherwise.

The famous Japanese quality is the third trump card. But even here individuality manifests itself. Truly Japanese, I would only call the Forester: he is like a samurai, in which every detail, bend, fabric, stitch must be perfect, otherwise it is a shame for life. Mazda is simpler in this respect, but no worse. Its quality is European: everything should be smooth and clear, without nuances. Toyota, on the other hand, looks more like an American with a certain amount of negligence, but not cheapness, relaxation, but not looseness. And it cannot be said that such a character appeared after the change of registration, the CX-5 is also assembled in Russia. Rather, it is the focus of general standards on the US market.

Despite the fact that the screens have become larger, the finish is "mirrored", the control is more convenient and new buttons have appeared (heated steering wheel, seat memory,) all the same in the Forester cabin everything is ascetic and correct in Japanese

The lack of navigation in the Starlink multimedia system is the only difference between the mid-range CS configuration and the top-end CL for the Forester 2.5i-L version. Adjusting the "climate" is simple, but you will have to keep track of the temperature on the upper screen. To the left of the steering wheel, there is a new button for turning off the function of changing the direction of headlights when cornering (SRH)

The Forester's front seats are like good office chairs — easy to sit on and easy to get off of. But during active driving, they seem to be the most slippery, and lateral support is moderate. But on the second row it is very convenient to turn on the heating, tilt the back of the sofa to the maximum angle, stretch your legs and sleep

The interior is quite consistent with the appearance of Toyota, non-standard for the brand and not at all boring design. At the same time, it has a completely iron logic, as well as pleasant finishing materials.

The sophisticated architecture of the RAV4 panel divides the controls into 4 levels. But each of them is very logical, with one exception. The top-most narrow screen / CD receiver has a very important button - ESP off, which comes in handy off-road. Not knowing its location in advance, it will be very difficult to find

The RAV4 driver's seat was clearly too big for me, I could not find the optimal position in any way, despite the 8 directions of electric adjustment and lumbar support. Apparently, it was made according to "male" patterns. But on the second row, the XXL size is for the good, as well as the possibility of heated seats

Inside the CX-5, you forget that you are in a Japanese car, everything is arranged and decorated in a very European way. The ideal logic of the arrangement and the balance of materials can only be overshadowed by careless handling of the light interior of the top-end Supreme equipment.

Mazda multimedia is controlled either through a touchscreen or a controller located in the center tunnel between the seats. You need to get used to it, but it's only a matter of time. It is not for nothing that most premium brands use a similar scheme. Only visual adjustments of the "climate" are made separately

The Mazda salon suited me the most, carefully wrapping the lateral support of the elastic chair. The same density on the second row. But for large people it may seem a bit crowded there. Selfish in relation to the rear passengers looks like the lack of heating, ventilation and the ability to connect the gadget to power

All three have the possibility of very good equipment - from the necessary security systems to almost frills. But unlike Toyota and Mazda, Subaru doesn't make "blank" initial versions. Even with the "junior" 2.0 engine and manual transmission, the Forester is equipped with full power accessories, heated steering wheel and all seats, a rear view camera, climate control, cruise control, a multimedia system with a 7-inch touchscreen display, 6 speakers and much more. Not to mention the permanent all-wheel drive and the SI-DRIVE system. RAV4 in the base has a standard for modern car a set of systems for safe driving, a 4.2-inch touchscreen, multimedia control buttons on the steering wheel, air conditioning, etc. But it has much more options - from a panoramic camera and active cruise control to LED headlights and an electric tailgate with height adjustment and memory function. Plus there is a choice of the type of transmission and drive. CX-5 basic configuration not much different from Toyota, and the set of options is slightly less, but nevertheless, only this beauty has 19 wheels, an electronic parking brake and a Bose music system with 9 speakers.

The image quality of the rear-view camera is comparable across all crossovers, but the Forester (left) has the best image in night mode, and the RAV4 (center) boasts an all-round view with the ability to view one of the four sectors separately.

It seems that over time, all manufacturers will come to the same bar shape in terms of diameter, thickness and tide in the grip zone. Only the nameplates and the location of the functional buttons will differ, as now.

The simple-looking Forester dashboard (left) has a lot of details, which, however, do not distract from the basic and easy-to-read information. The RAV4 has the most unpretentious design (center), but readability could be called ideal if the numbers were slightly larger. With its three wells, the CX-5 (right) claims sportiness while showing a classic approach to instrument layout.

The fact that these crossovers ceased to be compact, did them only good. After all, a dozen centimeters outside does not change anything much, but inside they add a decent volume, creating a feeling of spaciousness. In the Forester, it is more pronounced due to the high ceiling, and the slight lag of the CX-5 in terms of the vastness of the interior space is compensated by the comfort of the environment. All three cars have approximately the same number of storage containers: cup holders in the front in the center tunnel and on the second row of folding cushions, boxes between the front seats, pockets in the doors. But in Toyota you can put not only a glass, but also a mug with a handle, and a half-liter thermos fits only in a Subaru pocket. But Mazda has a deep recess in the place where the hand brake lever is usually located, from which the mobile phone does not pop out.

One of the indicators of the attitude of the automaker towards its client was the design of the raised floor of the trunk. In all three cars, it is made at the highest level, in addition, the place under it is very well designed for storing the spare wheel and the tool necessary for changing it. The first place in terms of useful volume is occupied by Toyota (center) with 577 liters available with the backs up and 1605 liters when folded (center photo). Subaru (left) has a smaller volume: 505 and 1548 liters, respectively (photo on the left). Mazda (right) in this dispute loses with indicators of 403 and 1560 liters, but it more possibilities transformation due to the presence of a narrow central part in the back (2: 1: 2). No car has a flat floor, but the Forester and RAV4 roof racks are more suitable for travel thanks to the load-securing hooks. Also, these cars have a function of limiting the height of the opening of the fifth door

It is very pleasant to drive these "Japanese" with such power units. The Forester's behavior is similar to a horse for a polo - maneuverable, capable of going into a gallop from a standstill and braking to the floor. The RAV4 looks more like a versatile Budyonnovskaya horse. Most of all, he enjoys pacing in parades and at a fast trot to cover long distances, so it is good for Toyota to travel on decent roads. CX-5 is an Arab filly, playful, nimble and easy-going. She feels great in heavy traffic and can make up for the time lost in a traffic jam with high-speed interception in a free area. In sport mode, which is available on all three competitors, the cars turn into a herd of barely beaten horses. Electronic "collars" become weaker, so you can slide in a turn and move from a traffic light so that the wide-open eyes of neighbors in the stream will be visible in the rear-view mirror for a very short time.

Restyling has also changed the behavior of the Forester. There are no abrupt jerks from a place now: thanks to different settings of the engine and variator "Forik" began to start smoother and more solid

Subaru has achieved the optimum balance of suspension stiffness and ride comfort. The car is not afraid of the asphalt broken after the winter, but it can also take turns at a decent speed

Sufficient horsepower and proper torque converter treatment provide Toyota with dynamic acceleration and confident movement in the stream. Just don't forget about the presence of electronic assistants. When, in a high-speed corner, the car suddenly "saw" a white lane and jerked the steering wheel, it was unpleasant

The fourth-generation RAV4 is slightly stiffer, but the handling has improved, although the tendency to drift at the front remains. If you do not pay attention to mechanical noise, you can even enjoy the driver's character!

In both performance and feel, the CX-5 is the fastest in the trio. She is collected, responsive and to some extent even harsh. If aggressive acceleration was accompanied by a more solid exhaust sound, it would be quite impressive

Harsh suspension Mazda confidently fulfills hitting spring asphalt holes. The only thing to keep in mind is the 19 discs, which increase the risk of puncture.

Potentials: Available, Latent, and Inaccessible

Continuing the cycle of our own test tests - measurements of engine power on a dyno - our trio visited the boxes of the DMT technical center. By itself, a certain sequence has developed, which, as shown by measurements, has become optimal. It turned out like an experienced university teacher who starts with excellent students - everything is quick and simple with them, and then he "pulls" the rest of the students.

The classic Subaru boxer should produce 171bhp. and 235 Nm of torque, which "come" to the wheels through a Lineartronic variator. Toyota has a 2AR-FE inline engine with a 10.4: 1 compression ratio "according to the passport" is capable of developing 180 hp. and 233 Nm, paired with a hydromechanical 6-speed gearbox. Mazda's 2.5-liter Skyactiv engine has a compression ratio of 14 and produces 192 hp. and 256 Nm, the transmission is also a 6-automatic transmission.

Mazda CX-5 was the first to arrive at the stand. The test run went smoothly and the test started immediately. The result turned out to be very close to the passport data: the power is 188.9 hp. and a torque of 252.1 Nm. The set of power and torque took place smoothly, without obvious failures - this behavior was reflected in the graph.

The second test subject was Toyota. Preparation for measurements took a little less time, since the drums had already been brought under the base of the crossovers, and the dyno was warmed up. But I had to suffer with the measurements themselves. With a good and confident acceleration in the range of 80-90 km / h, the RAV4 turned on some kind of cut-off, and the further set of speed, and with it the power, was extremely ineffective. Moreover, according to the employees of Dynamic MotorTechnic, this is not a feature of a particular car, but a feature of all the latest models. Either the manufacturer has put in some kind of protection "from the fool", or in the algorithm of the power units there is a special program that reduces the load by lowering the gear, but it was possible to overcome this trick from the sixth to seventh times. The result was a little farther from the catalog than the Mazda: 172.7 (-7.3) hp. and 219.4 (-12.6) Nm.

The last to come to the stand was Forester, as it had to change tires: on the spikes it would not be able to reach maximum performance, and it would damage the drums of the set. But it turned out to be much more difficult to carry out the measurements themselves, and the variator was to blame for this. Lineartronic does not have any virtual gears, including "direct" ones, therefore, with active gas supply, all the torque from the engine comes almost immediately. This can be seen on the graph, the horizontal axis of which reflects not the revolutions, which are almost always the same, but the speed. The difficulty was to find a balance between the greatest load and the moment when the tachometer needle goes into the red zone and the electronics begins to "choke" the motor. At the same time, Subaru did not need to accelerate to high speeds, and the maximum performance was already reached at 90 km / h and did not change further. Subaru's engine lost 13 hp somewhere. from the declared 171 "horses". But the lack of power is compensated by the result with an excess of torque, which turned out to be 34.3 Nm more than 235 declared in the catalog.

Off-tarmac ability is what really sets these cars apart. Permanent drive Subaru, coupled with the X-Mode system and a ground clearance of 22 cm, make it almost an SUV. If you are not afraid to put pressure on the gas, you can overcome almost any reasonable obstacle. Although in most cases, a competent distribution of torque is enough to slowly and surely get to the desired point. Toyota has a plug-in all-wheel drive, but there is a forced clutch lock button for equal distribution of torque between the axles. But off-road, a large mass, heavy front and almost "light" ground clearance of 197 mm reduce the potential. In our test, it was also lowered by the slippery tires on the melted snow, studless tires. Despite the best geometric cross-country ability (210 mm ground clearance and small overhangs) and the smallest weight, it is better not to drive the CX-5 into the snow at all. The all-wheel drive, sharpened to improve dynamics and handling, is clearly not enough, it does not have any electronic assistants, and the clutch is easy to overheat.

In order to drive down a small hill, hang out and drive back, the Forester did not even have to activate the off-road assistance system, and even more so turn on the constant ground clearance

RAV4 performed not very difficult exercises with a four, and the obvious smell of an overheated clutch kept us from extreme. In order not to get out of the off-road area on front wheel drive Toyota left alone

We did not manage to reach the intended goal, since Mazda did not want to climb the hill with a minimum slope at all. There was only one way to return to the asphalt without overheating the clutch - by moving, which we did

And now about the most important, but also the most unpleasant - about prices. Our test subjects are not just expensive, but very expensive: Subaru Forester 2017 model year - 2,189,900 rubles, Toyota RAV4 - 2,234,500, Mazda CX-5 - 2,047,600. Of course, these are not the versions that the cashier makes. Toyota and Mazda save less-equipped configurations (initial versions with 2.0 engines, manual transmissions and front-wheel drive cost 1,399,000 and 1,369,000 rubles, respectively) and Russian assembly... Subaru does not have these advantages - the basic version of the Forester costs 1,699,000 rubles, and all cars are still exported from Japan.

In 2016, according to the Association European business Toyota RAV4 ranked 7th in terms of sales among all cars in Russia. Its result is 30 603 pieces, which is 32% of the total sales of the brand. The CX-5 is 24th in the same ranking, but these 15,790 cars represent 73% of Mazda's sales. Forester's results are many times more modest - 3979 cars were sold during the year, but they provided 71% of the total volume of Subaru sold

It's hard work to sell when buyers don't have money. And our barge haulers have to be at the same time photo models, hard workers, athletes and someone else. The expensive imported city SUV Subaru Forester attracts connoisseurs of everything Japanese and fans of the brand, which, unfortunately, are fewer than we would like. There are many more city dwellers who appreciate beauty and dynamism united in the Mazda CX-5. But its striking appearance, balanced and practical qualities for the same money make the Toyota RAV4 a bestseller. Let's wait until the "big water" returns with a stable exchange rate and a growing economy, and then we'll see who comes out.

We are grateful to the National Equestrian Park "Rus" and KSK "Levadia" (Moscow region, Leninsky district, Orlovo village) for their help in taking photographs.

Today we will be comparing 2 popular cars: Rav 4 and Forester. Toyota Rav 4 looks pretty, but without emotion, as for Forester, there is this very emotion. There is definitely a masculinity. Traditionally, everything is very good with the organization of the workplace in Rav 4: the steering wheel is adjustable both in height and in the stem.

There is a very comfortable armrest that is also adjustable. As for the automatic transmission and the handle, it is in the very right place. The Subaru Forester also has a steering wheel adjustable both in stem and in height.

It looks very good itself, but it is multifunctional. electric seats, at least a driver's seat. As for the passenger, here you need to do everything with the help of muscles. The armrest is not as wide as in Rav 4, but it is still there, and it is also adjustable.

In Rav 4, you will really like the instrument panel and will not really like the graphics of the on-board computer. In Subaru Forester, the graphics of the on-board computer will be better with a lot of information and the graphics are very well developed.

More on the topic:

As for the head unit in Rav 4, despite the titled manufacturer, it all looks like a Chinese TV in a Russian taxi. If we talk about the graphics, then the buttons are small and it is not immediately possible to get into them. By the way, Forester has a very large sunroof and this adds air to the car's interior. In Rav 4 you can find a convenient niche for your phone, while Forester has a whole house built for it. With the living space for passengers, Rav 4 is fine.

The backrests of the rear seats are adjusted here. Forester also offers plenty of space, an armrest, two cup holders and adjustable backrests.

Who is technically stronger Toyota Rav 4 and Subaru Forester?

When braking at 60 km / h, both cars were put into 10-11 meters and did not bring any unpleasant surprises. The braking distance itself did not increase. The difference in braking of the two cars was 90 centimeters in favor of Forester, just because the tires were from different manufacturers. Rav 4 is quite obedient in management. And the handling is similar to an ordinary passenger car.

Everything happens easily and without stress. However, it seems that it is slow and it seems that Forester with its explosive engine and sporty character will be much more nimble and fast. Both cars passed the snake test quite well: with the same roll and the same speed.

Verdict on Rav 4 and Subaru or which is better than Subaru Forester or Toyota Rav 4?

Both competitors have enough virtues to acquire and love for the rest of their lives. According to the results of the tests described above, Forester took the lead, the Rav 4 undoubtedly lacks all-wheel drive, like the Forester. But you should not immediately run to a car dealership and buy a Forester, because both the Rav 4 and Subaru have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Choose a car according to your preferences.

Experienced motorists paraphrase the well-known wisdom in the following way: “You can look at three things for hours: how the fire burns, how the water flows, and ... how two dashing Japanese SUVs sort things out.” Well, let's not deprive auto gourmets of such joy. Moreover, in today's review, two cars will fight, which literally left for our virtual authoring, demanding recognition of their own merits. So let's find out who is better - Subaru Forester or.

Subaru Forester and Toyota Rav4 - Japanese SUVs from well-known manufacturers

Two from the casket

Many of you will rightly point out that finding out who is more competitive with Rav4 or Forester may turn out to be incorrect. It seems like these cars are from different classes. And at first glance, this is true.

Common features

But in fact, these Japanese have a lot in common. At least they are united (about 35 thousand dollars) and growing demand.

But they are similar in other criteria. For example, in both cars, you can find two-liter engines that are almost identical in power.

The same from the face

The Rav and Forester are also similar in appearance, despite the fact that the Forester is longer and lower, and the Rav is heavier. If you put the cars next to each other and carefully look at their "faces", you understand - they are at least cousins brothers. So we are comparing who is cooler - Rav4 or Subaru Forester - on completely legal grounds.

"Forest" character

The Forester car is manufactured by Subaru. It appeared on our market back in the nineties. Naturally, the local drivers immediately renamed the car in their own way. "Forester" or "Forester" - such a nickname was given to this SUV as a result of the translation of the original name from English into Russian.

However, this name suits the machine not only because of the semantics. Due to the high ground clearance, the car is perfect for trips to the countryside, to the forest. By the way, the car acquired the pronounced qualities of a crossover only in the freshest variation. Initially, one could argue that there is more in Forester - the qualities of a passenger car or off-road stubbornness.

Rav - off-road ambition

Toyota Automobile Corporation (the largest in Japan) showed the world the Toyota Rav4 also in the early nineties. It immediately became clear that the Rafik was a special car. After all, until now, there was no “light accent”. Rav4 helped to give birth to the concept of SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle). And, perhaps, only with its appearance, motorists realized all the advantages of an SUV.

In the 2000s, Toyota carried out a restyling of the car, and now we can consider the "Rafik" in updated colors. But its off-road ambitions are visible literally at first glance. At least the wheel on the rear door gives out the "jeep" habits of the Rav4.

The machine is characterized by a smooth ride with a high degree of cross-country ability, and also takes heart and good equipment.

Passion for the salon

Continuing the duel "Rav4 vs Forester"? Then let's take a look inside. And then there will be something to be surprised.

On board a starship

Have you ever been on board a starship? Get behind the wheel of the Rav and you will feel like a driver of an intergalactic unit. ... Modern technologies have gone through literally every corner of it. Buttons, screens, devices, displays ... Wow!

At first, the eyes run up, so it's not so quick to figure out what's what. For example, the upper buttons on the center console are responsible for control. There are buttons for changing climatic conditions. The flaps for activating the seat heating function and are displayed separately. In general, it looks and functions really well.

Only on business

The forester, to be honest, cannot boast of such "minced meat". The salon has everything you need and familiar, but no frills. “Briefly and to the point” - apparently, the designers worked on this principle. But the classics also have a number of their advantages. Everything here is traditionally good and ergonomic, everything is at hand, nothing flickers like a Christmas tree on New Year's, and does not distract the driver from the road.

In terms of roominess, the "Rafika" salon wins, which is higher and has a vertical seating position. Also, the rear sofa is regulated in this, so if necessary, you can move it and change the slope "for yourself".

Your luggage

What arguments will Forester present against the Rav4 when it comes to comparing the capacity of the luggage compartments? And no! They are not particularly needed here, since both cars are quite voluminous: Subaru - 390 liters, Toyota - 450. But in the first it is longer, and in the second it is higher.

By the way, both "Forester" and "Rafik" have underground in luggage compartments... Although, in general, there is more space in Toyota. Space saving is also achieved due to the fact that the spare wheel is mounted on back door... But loading is much more convenient in Forester, because the door opens upward, and not sideways, like in the "Rafik".

Another feature: when driving inside a Toyota, there is more noise than in a Subaru. Perhaps because of the thin wall between the passenger compartment and the luggage compartment.

Competition on the way

The competition "Subaru Forester vs Toyota Rav4" is interesting to watch. In the city and on the highway, both cars do not slow down and, on demand, quickly pick up speed... Ten seconds - and you are already on a hundred. As much as possible without any problems, both crossovers take 180-190 km / h.

Test drive a car Subaru Forester:

Cars do not skimp on successful maneuvers, which is a very big plus in city traffic conditions. They take turns playfully and do not think about when choosing the required driving intensity.

But everything is so smooth on the track. And how do Japanese SUVs behave on our bumps? Test drives show that cross-country ability is almost at the same level. And at a fairly good level. Cars do not climb, but literally jump over "hills". At the same time, driving on bumps in the cabin is almost imperceptible.

Test drive of Toyota RAV4 car:

Cars react to driver commands without hesitation. True, off-road crossovers have difficulty overclocking. Here, picking up speed as quickly as on the track will not work.

Lives in the "heart" ... drive?

The "hearts" of both cars are also similar. In particular, the trim levels are presented for four cylinders. Although the engines still differ in the nature of the ride. At Forester, he is distinguished by drive and loves high speeds. On the other hand, the Rafik's motor is more designed for a measured driving style.

By the way, with greater dynamism, Subaru is less "gluttonous".

On the scales

So, the battle "Subaru Forester vs Toyota Rav4" is coming to an end. Let's draw the line. Choosing Forester or Rav4, you will not go wrong with any decision. Who will pull down, being on the scales, entirely depends only on your taste. In fact, the key difference between these cars lies in the brand of the manufacturer and the "stuffing" of the interior: Toyota employees have designed their Rav4 with great creativity.

The 2018 New York Auto Show is in full swing and all the major new items seem to be on show. It is worth noting that once again we have witnessed how one of the main world auto events of the year passed under the constellation of the SUV class, and two big premieres in the near future will have the most direct impact on car market Russia. We are talking about the fifth generations and are bitter competitors for the hearts of buyers in the segment of compact crossovers.

The outgoing RAV4 was without a doubt a very tolerant car. There were no sharp corners, no strong statements, no conflicting decisions - there was nothing like that in him. He simply had to be liked by everyone and no one at the same time. Nevertheless, such a positioning "for everyone", generously flavored with the necessary modern chips, bore fruit - only overseas in 2017 was sold under 400 thousand "Rafiks", which made the model one of the most popular in the world in principle.

In the opposite corner of the ring is the Subaru Forester - a car for those who know for sure what exactly Subaru and Forester wants. A very specific proposal with all the pros and cons, which, nevertheless, are always known in advance. Forester did not hold any surprises, remaining the choice of practicality and off-road enthusiasts in a compact body. "The opposers" Japanese company have never been considered a model of reliability, but the traditional symmetrical four-wheel drive has won many adherents.

2019 Toyota RAV4 Revolution

With the new generation of the 2019 RAV4 crossover, Toyota has decided to revolutionize the world by shaking up the foundations on which the model's long-standing popularity has been based. If earlier the appearance of the car was neutral with a bias towards femininity, now this is a very brutal proposal in the spirit of American Toyota 4Runner and Tacoma. “Be a man - buy a RAV4”, it seems that this slogan is now best suited for the advertising campaign of the novelty.

In this case, it was the message, the excessive aggressiveness in the “look” that gave the crossover a lacking charisma, although we cannot unequivocally state the beauty of such a design. Obviously, not everyone (and not everyone) will like it. Nevertheless, our applause to the developers for their courage, and we hope that this does not turn out to be recklessness. The entire body of the new Toyota RAV4 2019 looks like it had just been hacked out of a single piece of granite, and even not with the sharpest tool.

2019 Subaru Forester Evolution

"The main thing, guys, is not to grow old at heart!" - heard the engineers of Subaru and immediately spit on these wise words of the "taiga" song performed by Eduard Khil. The developers decided to leave the heart-motor from the previous generation to the crossover and, apparently, this completely redrawn the work of the design department, which rushed to tighten old design 4 generations for a completely new and truly modern SGP architecture.

Of course, here and there, if you look closely, you can see that the appearance of the Subaru Forester 2019 is different from its predecessor. But these differences are so insignificant that they will not do honor to another restyling. It should not be hidden that we, and many loyal Subaru lovers, too, this tradition, to put it mildly, puzzled, and some frankly disappointed - well, you can't be so careful!

2.5 liters for two

Both the 2019 RAV4 and the 2019 Forester - both will be sold with 2.5-liter 4-cylinder "aspirated", "in-line" and "boxer", respectively. Naturally, this does not mean that they are the same, but it is very indicative in terms of the target audience of crossovers, which is one and the same - orthodox fans of reliable engines, without any "turbo whistles" there. The engine power of "Lesnik" is 182 hp, while that of "Rafik" - 203 hp. (the last figure has not been officially confirmed, but in the new Camry, the recoil of this motor is similar).

Salon

If I look into the salons of both models, we can note the similarity of their architecture, with the only difference that the RAV4 has a multimedia system display above the front panel, while the Forester has it built into it. Also, if you look at both interiors long enough, it might seem that the interior design of Subaru is a little more daring, not shy about playing with shapes, transitions, a combination of sharp corners and planes. Everything in Toyota is much more straightforward, plus this "cushion" on the steering wheel ...

Who is who in the end?

The decision, of course, will have to the buyer, that is, you. What crossover should you spend your hard-earned money on, who should you give preference to? We'd love to see your ideas in the comments section below!
