Small cars on our roads are neglected. In vain! Some of them can give odds to many large specimens. Typical examples of disguised power are the Opel Corsa OPC and Renault Clio Sport, the real characteristics of which we tested on the Dmitrovsky auto-range.

The most practical cars for a metropolis are class B cars. They are nimble and easy to park in tight parking lots. Of course, many are worried about the power of the motors. Small cars are equipped with economical and not very dynamic engines. And I want something more powerful. And the torment begins: either take class C and lose in maneuverability, or endure humiliation at traffic light starts. But there is a way out: you need a little athlete.

Two prominent representatives of this symbiosis are the Opel Corsa OPC and Renault Clio Sport. By the way, the German manufacturer awards almost every model sports modification... Renault, although not so punctual, is famous for its repeated victories in the rally, so the experience of the French company is also not to be lacking. Alas, we do not sell a car like the Renault Megan ST, although in Europe it enjoys a small but stable demand. But Russian buyers have the opportunity to become the owner of Clio Sport.

We simply could not help but compare the charged Opel and Renault. Still, both cars belong to the same class, the engines differ in volume, but are identical in power.

With an aggressive body kit and a huge spoiler on the trunk lid, the Corsa looks sportier. The rugged character of this car is designed to emphasize the huge 17-inch wheels. Clio looks simpler, as if it does not want to give away its real capabilities once again. Sportiness is indicated only by wide door sills and greatly inflated wheel arches. The gills near the front fenders help to dissipate heat more quickly from the engine and brakes. Rear bumper combined with a diffuser. Even the Clio's dual exhaust tailpipes are hidden away so you can't see. The same cannot be said for the Corsa. Exhaust pipe is located in the middle of the bumper and has a triangular shape. The car interiors are in harmony with the exterior. Opel claims leadership with sport buckets with progressive lateral support. They fix the body tightly. The range of settings is enough to not only comfortably fit a person of any body size, but also to adjust the seats for an active driving style.

When you are in the Clio, it’s hard to realize that you’re in a sports car. This can be guessed from the inscriptions on the sills and emblems on the headrests of the seats. Chairs can be considered moderately comfortable, with sufficient adjustments. More sporty Recaro seats are also available. The ergonomics turned out to be about the same in both cars.

Under the hood of Opel is a 1.6-liter engine that produces 192 hp. due to the installed turbine. Renault has five more "horses", but a two-liter naturally aspirated engine is installed here. In terms of torque, the Corsa has 15 Nm more than the Clio (230 Nm). They can be used between 1950 and 5850 rpm. In the Clio, torque peaks at 5550 min-1. The Corsa engine, due to the presence of the turbine, "spins" much more willingly. Clio spins up to 4000 min-1 hard, but as soon as this mark is crossed, intense acceleration begins immediately. In the Corsa, the engine also springs to life after 4000 min-1, but it reaches them at lightning speed. This is confirmed by the figures of measurements of elasticity. Opel accelerates from 60 to 100 km / h in fourth gear in 5.7 seconds,
and Renault has 7.1 s.

The most interesting information for many is acceleration to 100 km / h. But none of the test subjects was able to reach the figures declared by the manufacturers. Corsa accelerated to 100 km / h in 7.9 s (7.2 - Opel data), Clio - in 7.7 s (6.9 - Renault data). Forgive this slyness, because overclocking is not as important as, for example, handling. By the way, the chassis of our cars are tuned in different ways. Opel Corsa has an energy-intensive suspension, which, however, is prone to roll and swing. The engineers focused on comfort. On Renault Clio, we also recognize the suspension as energy-intensive, but differing in greater elasticity. It works out the topography of the road precisely, observing the trajectory of the movement as clearly as possible. This is confirmed by measurements. The unloaded slalom speed is 63.5 km / h for the Corsa and 66 km / h for the Clio. Opel resigned for a short change at a speed of 70 km / h at the entrance and 52 km / h at the exit. For Renault, this exercise was carried out at 74 km / h at the entrance and 51 km / h at the exit. For the Corsa, the speed on the long shift was 130.3 km / h, for the Clio - 133.3 km / h. It seems that such a slight difference of 2-3 km / h does not play a big role. But this is not the case. The difference of one kilometer leads to the development of a drift, which is very difficult to extinguish. In addition, the Corsa requires constant trajectory adjustments. In the Clio, this is partially defeated by the equal size of the front and rear track. From this we can conclude that the Clio follows a given trajectory much more accurately. The "German" is saved by a more informative steering wheel (2.4 turns from lock to lock). The Clio's steering wheel is too light, and it needs to be turned more intensively (2.8 turns).

The winner in the "Braking" nomination was the "Frenchman". At a stop from 100 km / h, it beats the Opel Corsa OPC by one meter. And from 170 km / h the difference in braking is all 17 m (107 m versus 124 m). Both cars met the standards, but the difference is obvious. Apparently, not only brakes play a role here, but also properly selected standard tires.

Our verdict

Both cars are perfect for everyday use in a large metropolis with constant traffic jams and lack of parking. Their power reserve will allow you to win traffic light starts, as well as get the most out of active driving on suburban tracks with a lot of turns or on amateur sprints. It remains only to decide, to take Opel Corsa OPC with the striking appearance of an athlete, but a softer and more comfortable suspension, or Renault Clio Sport with a discreet appearance, but an excellent chassis.

I sold it spontaneously. Even such a goal was not at that time. Came home, posted an ad on the site, more for fun than a real sale. I even forgot to tell my wife about it. there was no serious desire to sell. The price tags were set by a normal one, for the same money, for how much I took it 1.5 years ago. Went to sleep. I woke up from a phone call, 8-30 am - sell me the car. And so it began. Almost 10 calls in the morning, 3 views per evening. I’m really crazy. I called my wife (she is at the dacha with a child) - they really want to buy your car. The car was chosen in the COSMO configuration, 1.4l engine. On test drive first we rode on a corso without a hatch - the ceiling height seemed to be enough. When the car arrived and it was with a hatch, we were disappointed (the hatch ate 3-4 centimeters). No other flaws were found.

The car has a short base - goats on uneven roads. I could not get used to the seat - there are no adjustments. You will drive 30 kilometers and your back will start to ache. But since it was mainly my spouse who rode it over short distances, there were no big problems.

Warranty changed steering rack 2 times. They say it is their disease. We had no more complaints. Then a friend bought a corso for his daughter in St. Petersburg. There, over time, a gearbox malfunction (and there is a robot). Several times reflash the automatic control box. The malfunction was expressed in the fact that in front of a traffic light, the car seemed to stop normally - but it could not always move to green.

A month ago, the car found a new owner in the face of a girl. She bought the first car, the main route - work and back 250 km from Krasnodar. Recently received the rights. I hope this will not affect the safety and integrity of our former car. The car was re-registered according to the new rules - without changing the number, only the contract and the entry of the new owner into the vehicle title with the replacement of the registration certificate.

At the time of the sale, the mileage had already approached 82,500 km, slight disturbances in the suspension were already felt in the car, I tend to develop stabilizer struts. It was because of them that there was a terrible rumble in our current car, which disappeared after they were replaced. Also, as a gift to the new mistress, I ordered the long-broken bumpers rear shock absorbers, but I haven’t put them on until now - she will not come to replace them in any way. Business for an hour, but it does not grow together yet.

All systems and assemblies at the time of sale worked perfectly, the driver's belt began to unwind, but disassembling and cleaning the guides did not help this time. About a year and a half ago, the dealer did the same job, it seemed to be delaying normally.

The first thought after landing in the Opel Corsa OPC is how uncomfortable these seats are, but after a little time on the road you notice that your back does not get tired and you can continue, continue and continue driving. And this is in the presence of adjustments of the front seats in only 6 directions. The interior is spacious enough for such a compact car. With a height of 175 cm, I do not feel constraint in my legs, over my head, or in front or behind. The trunk is very small, and the lack of a spare wheel makes you think about long journeys in this car. The Opel Corsa OPC is just a hurricane in motion, especially from 3000 rpm. He constantly provokes active driving. Confidently keeps the trajectory, behaves well at high speeds, provided that the road is flat, but if the road has flaws in the surface and meanders, then the car becomes nervous and twitchy at speeds far beyond the disqualification. The car has enough power always and everywhere, provided that the appropriate gear is engaged. Constantly flashing stabilization system icon, especially on wet asphalt, "says" that the power is sufficient. The mechanical 6-speed gearbox pleases with a fairly clear shift mechanism, but there is still the development of quick shifts ahead, especially from first to second gear.

I began to notice that the passenger sitting on the right is constantly sitting in some kind of tension, although I myself am absolutely calm at the same time. Having passed as a passenger in my car, I understood the feelings of the person sitting on the right. He shakes, presses both into the backrest and into the lateral support of the seat. Upsetting is the lack of an engine temperature gauge and a small capacity fuel tank(45 liters in total). If you can at least somehow fight the first problem using the information display, the Setting and BC buttons, then I don't see a solution to the second problem - from refueling to refueling. Conclusion: now, after a little less than 6,000 km, I can say that I am completely satisfied with the car. Every time I sit in the Opel Corsa OPC and I am happy like the first time. The upcoming difficulties with "childhood diseases" are not at all scary.
