BMW E39 is a middle class car, produced in sedan and station wagon bodies. The production of the premium class model began in 1995, and in 1999 the assembly was organized at the Russian Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad. In 2000, the E39 family underwent modernization. The motor range of the car consisted of gasoline engines volumes of 2.0, 2.2, 2.5, 2.8 and 3.0 liters (from 150 to 230 liters. from.), as well as 8-cylinder engines with a volume of 3.5 and 4.4 liters (235-286 liters. from.). Diesel 4-cylinder engines with a volume of 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 liters had a capacity of 115 to 193 liters. with. By the end of 2004, the total production of E39 amounted to 1 million 470 thousand copies.

Automatic transmission oil change schedule

According to the recommendations of experienced motorists and specialists, the frequency of oil change in the BMW E39 automatic transmission is 60-100 thousand km. Below are examples of the most negative climatic factors and driver errors in which the oil in the automatic transmission wears out at an accelerated rate. It becomes unusable ahead of time, so the oil will have to be changed twice as often as the specified schedule.

  • The driver sharply exceeds the speed, actively accelerates and brakes unnecessarily
  • The machine is regularly operated off-road, where there is a lot of sand, snow, gravel or stones (regardless of the type of coverage), and is also exposed to the negative influence of the ambient temperature
  • The gearbox is constantly overloaded and overheated due to frequent shifting, for example, in urban areas where there are a lot of traffic lights
  • The machine is being overloaded (towing loads or maximum speed).

Signs of untimely oil change in automatic transmission

  • Slip when shifting gears, which also occurs when driving uphill
  • A drop in oil pressure in the line to a critical point, which indicates a lack of oil in the automatic transmission, damage to the oil pump discharge valve, or the presence of wear products in the solenoids and valve body
  • The car is not able to budge even if the automatic transmission is in good working order.

BMW 5 series 525 TDS ›Logbook› Oil change, automatic transmission E39

To begin with, you should make sure that the oil in the box is generally subject to replacement, since since 1995, BMW has been practicing the use of "oil for the entire service life of the automatic transmission." Usually the oil changes every 50-60 thousand. You also need to know what kind of oil is poured into the box.

Now about the amount of oil. The same amount is poured as it has merged. When replacing, from 2 to 5 liters flows out of the box. It depends on the position in which the torque converter has stopped and this is unpredictable.

The oil filter must be purchased immediately with the automatic transmission pan gasket.

So, everything is bought, the car is on the lift. (If you only have a hole, it will not work, since one of the main conditions is the exactly horizontal position of the machine, and rear wheels should be posted).

We unscrew the drain plug (under the small internal hexagon) and wait until everything merges to the end, tighten the plug.

We unscrew the automatic transmission pan (usually the head is 10). We unscrew it carefully, having previously shed all the bolts with a vadashka, since this place is dirty and silumin brackets stuck to the bolts tend to break. (You can buy in advance, just in case, 2 corner and 2 straight braces).

Checking oil level on BMW

Help in choosing used cars - Our group is in contact bmw- My …

We remove the pallet and change the gasket on it.

We unscrew the filter - usually 3 internal torxes by 27.

Remove the filter downward. Some more oil will drain.

Put on the rubber ring from the filter set on the throat of the new filter, if not fitted.

We put on a new filter and screw it on.

We put and fasten the pallet with a new gasket.

(If you could not buy a new gasket, you can install the old one, but then be sure to coat it with silicone sealant on both sides). BETTER NEW!

Now we will fill in the oil. This operation requires 2 people!

Unscrew filler plug(next to the drain, but in a recess and under a large hexagon).

We use a syringe to fill in the oil until it flows back.

We twist the cork slightly.

The second person gets behind the wheel and starts the car.

Again, unscrew the filler plug (do not be afraid that oil will rush on your head - after all, the torque converter is working and it will take all the oil into itself) and again fill in the oil until it flows back.

We twist the cork slightly.

We ask the second to drive the box through all selector positions, do the same in the sports and winter modes (if any), then in the "D" mode, accelerate to a speed of 140-160 km / h and watch for a clear gear shift.

After that, we transfer the box to the "N" or "P" mode and check the oil level for the last time - try to add some more oil until it flows back.

We twist the filler plug, turn off the engine.

Changing the lubricant in the gearbox is one of the mandatory procedures. Maintenance car. In this case, the procedure can really be carried out independently, without the help of specialists. This also applies to the BMW E39: it is easy to change the oil in the automatic transmission with your own hands. True, it is worth considering that a certain set of tools will be required to replace.

Which oil is better to choose in automatic transmission for BMW E39?

Correct oil change in automatic transmission on BMW E39 is impossible without choosing a suitable lubricant. And here it is necessary to remember: automatic transmissions are extremely demanding on the composition of the lubricant. Using the wrong product will damage the automatic transmission and premature repairs. That's why it is recommended to fill in transmission BMW E39 original BMW oil... It is liquid with BMW ATF D2, specification Dextron II D, article number 81229400272.

Original oil BMW ATF Detron II D

It is imperative to remember the article - the marking may differ slightly, but the article numbers do not change. The proposed oil is used by the BMW concern when filling in the automatic transmission of the fifth series, to which the E39 belongs. The use of other options is permissible only when the original grease is not available. The correct fluid must be selected based on the official approvals. There are four tolerances: ZF TE-ML 11, ZF TE-ML 11A, ZF TE-ML 11B and LT 71141. And the purchased grease must match at least one of them. From analogs, we can recommend the following:

  • Ravenol with part number 1213102.
  • SWAG with part number 99908971.
  • Mobil LT71141.

You also need to remember - oil for automatic transmission is also used in the power steering... Therefore, it is recommended to carry out a simultaneous fluid change, buying a lubricant in an amount sufficient for both units. But there is a problem - the manufacturer often does not indicate the required amount of oil for a complete replacement. That's why lubricating fluid for BMW E39 you have to buy with a margin of 20 liters or more.

When do you need to change the oil in the automatic transmission for BMW E39?

On the issue of the frequency of oil change in automatic transmissions in the BMW E39, there are several opinions that do not coincide with each other. The first opinion is the car manufacturer. BMW representatives say: The lubrication in the automatic transmission is designed for the entire service life of the transmission. No replacement required, lubricant will not deteriorate regardless of the driving mode. The second opinion is the opinion of many experienced drivers. Car owners claim that the first replacement should be carried out after 100 thousand kilometers. And all subsequent ones - every 60-70 thousand kilometers. Auto locksmiths periodically support one side or the other.

But how do you know whose opinion is correct here? As always, the truth is roughly in the middle. Producer rights - automatic transmission oil change in BMW E39 optional procedure. But this is true only if two conditions are met. The first condition is that the car will only drive along good roads... And the second condition is that the driver agrees to change the gearbox every 200 thousand kilometers. In this case, you do not need to change the lubricant.

But it is worth considering - the BMW E39 was produced from 1995 to 2003. And at the moment there is practically no car of this series with a mileage of less than 200 thousand km. This means that it is imperative to change the oil. And these are the ones here fluid change recommendations:

  • Grease is poured every 60-70 thousand kilometers. It is recommended to additionally check the automatic transmission for leaks. You should also pay attention to the color of the oil and its consistency.
  • The oil is purchased with a margin. It will be required for replacement and for flushing the gearbox. The required volume depends on the specific automatic transmission model. A general recommendation is to fill in grease up to the bottom edge of the filler hole. During the filling process, the car must stand on a level surface, without tilting.
  • Can't be mixed various brands liquids. During operation, they react. And this leads to very unpleasant consequences.
  • You should not carry out a partial oil change. In this case, the bulk of dirt and chips remains in the box, which subsequently complicates the operation of the unit.

Replacement process

The procedure for changing the oil in an automatic transmission begins with the acquisition of fluid and the preparation of tools. Everything has already been said about the choice of lubricant. The only addition is that you need to buy additional oil with a margin: a certain amount will be spent on flushing. The amount of fluid required for cleaning depends on the degree of contamination of the transmission. The color of the purchased lubricant does not matter. Do not mix oils of different shades., but there are no such restrictions for a complete replacement.

List of necessary parts and tools for changing the oil in the automatic transmission BMW E39:

  • Lift. The machine is fixed in a horizontal position. In this case, it is necessary to keep the wheels in a free, suspended state. Therefore, a pit or overpass will not work - you need a lift. In certain cases, you can use a set of jacks. But they will have to firmly hold the car in order to avoid unpleasant consequences.
  • Hex wrench. Required for the drain plug. The size differs depending on the automatic transmission model and must be manually selected. A number of experienced drivers recommend using an adjustable wrench to unscrew the plug. But it should be used with care so as not to deform the part.
  • Box or open-end wrench for 10, for unscrewing the crankcase protection. But it is recommended to prepare also keys for 8 and 12: the size of the bolt heads sometimes differs.
  • A screwdriver with a torx section, 27. Needed to remove the oil filter.
  • New oil filter... When changing the oil, it is worth checking the condition of this part. In most cases, she needs to be replaced. It is highly recommended to purchase original spare parts BMW, or quality analogues available in the region.
  • Transmission oil pan gasket. It is not recommended to purchase a rubber gasket - it often leaks.
  • Silicone sealant. Required to install a new gasket after cleaning the automatic transmission pan.
  • Box socket wrench (or ratchet wrench) for loosening the bolts holding the pallet. The bolt size differs depending on the transmission model.
  • Tool WD-40. Used to remove dirt and rust from bolts. Without WD-40, it is difficult to remove the crankcase protection and the automatic transmission pan (the bolts stick and do not loosen).
  • Syringe or funnel and hose for filling new oil. The recommended diameter is up to 8 millimeters.
  • A clean cloth for cleaning the pallet and magnets.
  • A hose that goes over the heat exchanger pipe.
  • Tool for flushing the gearbox oil pan (optional).
  • Container for draining the used grease.
  • USB cable K + DCAN and laptop with BMW Standart Tools installed. It is better to look for a cable in the following format: K + DCAN USB Interface (INPA Compatible).

It is also recommended to find an assistant. Its main task is to start and stop the engine in time. By the way, there is one important point concerning flushing. Some drivers recommend using gasoline or diesel fuel to clean the sump. Do not do this: such liquids react with oil. As a result, a sediment appears, the lubricant becomes clogged, the service life of the automatic transmission decreases.

The last thing to remember is safety rules:

  • Do not allow liquids to come into contact with eyes, mouth, nose or ears. It is also worth working carefully with hot oil, it can leave very unpleasant burns.
  • Choose suitable, loose-fitting clothing for the job. It is worth remembering that the clothes will get dirty. Do not take what it is a pity to spoil.
  • The machine must be well secured to the lift. Any carelessness in this matter could result in serious injury.
  • Tools and parts should be handled with care and attention. Spilled oil can cause fracture, sprain, or other injury. The same applies to a wrench thrown underfoot.

First step

First step - used oil drain out of the box itself. The crankcase protection is removed first. It is recommended to rinse it and treat the WD-40 bolts to remove rust and scale. By the way, it is worth unscrewing them carefully so as not to damage the silumin brackets. The plastic pallet is also removed. Next, the lower part of the gearbox is cleaned. Remove dirt and rust as well as clean all bolts and plugs. This is where the WD-40 comes in handy again.

Automatic transmission BMW E39 with removed pallet

Now we need to find the drain plug. Its location is indicated in service book, which is recommended to always be kept nearby. Look for the drain plug from the bottom, on the gearbox oil pan. The plug is unscrewed, and the liquid is drained into a previously prepared container. Then the plug is screwed back on. But this is not a complete drain of oil from the automatic transmission on the BMW E39 - you still need to remove the sump and replace the filter. The process looks like this:

  • The bolts are carefully unscrewed around the perimeter of the pallet. The pan is removed to the side, but it is worth remembering that there is still used oil in it.
  • After removing the pallet from the parts in the automatic transmission, the remaining oil will begin to drain. Here again, you will need a container for the used grease.
  • Use a Torx screwdriver to remove the oil filter. It is impossible to clean it, it must be replaced. It is worth buying a spare part according to the recommendations from the service book. One of the options recommended by drivers is VAICO oil filters.

But it is worth considering - if you stop at this stage, only 40-50% of the used lubricant will be removed from the system.

Second phase

At the second stage, the automatic transmission is actively flushed (with the engine running) and the pallet is cleaned. Start by removing waste oil and metal shavings from the pan. Finding the shavings is easy - it sticks to magnets, and looks like a paste of a dark, black-brown hue. In advanced cases, metal "hedgehogs" are formed on the magnets. They must be removed, the used oil must be discarded, and the sump must be thoroughly rinsed. A number of experienced drivers recommend flushing the sump with gasoline. But this is not a good idea. The workshop workers believe that special cleaning agents should be used.

It is necessary to thoroughly flush oil from both the sump and the bolts. The insulating silicone gasket is then removed and replaced with a new one. Yet the gasket must be treated with silicone sealant! The pallet is now set in place and secured carefully. After that, you need to unscrew the filler plug and fill the automatic transmission with oil. It is most convenient to use a syringe for these purposes. The gearbox must be filled up to the lower edge of the filler hole. The plug is then screwed into place.

Further it is necessary find a heat exchanger... Outwardly, it looks like a block like a radiator, with two pipes located next to each other. The exact description can be found in the vehicle's service book. In the same document, it is necessary to find the direction of oil movement through the heat exchanger. Hot lubricant enters the heat exchanger through one of the nozzles. And the second serves to remove the cooled liquid. It is he who is needed for further flushing. The process looks like this:

  • The oil supply hose is removed from the branch pipe. It must be carefully removed to the side without damaging it.
  • Then another hose is put on the branch pipe. suitable size... Its other end is directed into an empty container to drain the used oil.
  • The assistant is given a signal to start the engine. The gearshift lever must be in neutral. After 1-2 seconds, dirty oil will come out of the hose. Leak out at least 2-3 liters. The flow weakens - the motor is shut off. Important to remember: Automatic transmission should not work in oil starvation mode! In such a mode, wear increases, parts overheat, which, in turn, will lead to premature repairs.
  • The filler plug is unscrewed and the automatic transmission is filled with oil approximately to the level of the lower edge of the filler hole. The plug is screwed on.
  • The procedure is repeated with starting the engine and cleaning through the heat exchanger. This should be repeated until relatively clean oil is poured. It is worth remembering that the lubricant is bought with the expectation of such a cleaning of the gearbox. But it is not recommended to get too carried away with flushing, otherwise there will be no lubricant left to fill the gearbox.
  • The last stage - the heat exchanger hoses are installed in place.

BMW E39 heat exchanger with grease drain hose

Now all that remains is to fill the automatic transmission with oil and deal with the automatic transmission settings.

Stage Three

The oil filling procedure has already been described above. It looks like this: the filler hole opens, the automatic transmission is filled with grease, the hole closes. Pour in to the bottom edge. It should be noted: the color of the liquid does not matter. The replacement oil can be green, red or yellow. This does not affect the quality of the composition.

But it is too early to start the engine and check the transmission. Now need to customize the electronics of BMW E39 appropriately if the transmission is adaptive. It is worth noting that some drivers feel that the customization will be superfluous. But it’s better to carry it out. The process looks like this:

  • The program is installed on the laptop BMW Standart Tools... Version 2.12 will do. If necessary, it can be installed on a computer, but it is unlikely that the owner of the car will have a home PC in the garage.
  • The laptop is connected to the OBD2 diagnostic socket located in the passenger compartment. The program is obliged to determine the presence of automatic transmission by default.
  • Now you need to find the adaptation reset in the program. Here the sequence is as follows:
    • Find Bmw 5 series... The name changes depending on the localization. We need a group of cars of the fifth series - the BMW E39 belongs to them.
    • Next you need to find the actual E39.
    • Now the item is selected Transmission- transmission.
    • Further - Automatic transmission, gearbox... Or only automatic transmission, it all depends on the version of the program.
    • Last points: Adaptations, and then - Erase adaptations... There may be several options here: erase adaptations, reset settings, reset adaptations. The point is that the previous settings are reset.

What is it for? Spent, drained oil is different in consistency from new fluid... But the automatic transmission is configured to work with the old fluid. And therefore, a reset of the old settings is necessary. After that, the gearbox will already be adjusted to work with the oil used.

Final stage: running the gearbox in each of the modes... The machine has not yet been removed from the lift. It is necessary to start the engine and drive the car for half a minute in each mode available for the automatic transmission. This will allow the oil to flow through the entire circuit. The system will also complete the setup by adapting to the new lubricant. It is strongly recommended to warm up the oil to 60-65 degrees Celsius. Then the automatic transmission is transferred to neutral (the engine does not shut off!), And the lubricant is again added to the box. The principle is the same - fill up to the lower edge of the filler hole. Now the plug is screwed into place, the engine is shut off and the machine is removed from the lift.

In general, the process is complete. But there are a number of recommendations related to oil change. Immediately after replacement, it is advisable to drive at least 50 km in a soft, break-in mode. It is worth remembering: a hard operating mode can provoke an emergency stop. Moreover, there is a chance that you will have to reset the emergency program already in the official service. The last recommendation: it is worth checking the condition of the oil every year, in addition to changing the fluid every 60-70 thousand kilometers.

According to the official statement of the "BMW" company, the oil in automatic transmissions on cars of this brand does not need to be changed since 1995, since it can withstand the entire service life of the car. However, in reality this is not the case. On average, already by 50,000 - 60,000 km. mileage, the condition of the oil in the transmission deteriorates and should be replaced. Otherwise, the breakdown of the "machine" is possible, the elimination of which is a very expensive measure.

In car services, about 2500 - 3000 rubles are charged for changing the oil in the automatic transmission. (at the officials). However, you can save money and do everything yourself. In this article we will describe this procedure using the example of "BMW E39".

Subtleties and nuances of oil change in automatic transmission BMW E39

If we talk about changing the oil by draining the old one and filling in the new one, then this is called partial replacement... The complete one is produced at a special stand and also includes rinsing the box. It is carried out by running several portions of oil through the unit until it is completely clarified, which takes from 15 to 20 liters. So if you haven't changed the oil for a long time or your car is used with high mileage, and the oil in the "machine" has never changed, you will have to fork out for a complete replacement.
It is extremely important to know the brand of the old oil, since it and the filled volume differ greatly depending on the year of manufacture of the car and the engine number (from different motors different automatic transmissions were aggregated). Information on this can be found on the Internet.
A total of 2-5 liters may be required. oil, since it needs to be filled in as much as the old one is drained. The amount of old oil is determined by the position of the torque converter, which is unrealistic to guess.

Tools and materials

  • New oil, container for old and oil filter;
  • A gasket for the pallet (you can also use the old one, having thoroughly coated it with auto-sealant on 2 sides, but it is better to purchase a new one);
  • VD-40;
  • 4 brackets (2 pcs. Angular and straight). It may not be needed if you carefully unscrew the pallet;
  • 2 screwdrivers or keys for small and large hexagons;
  • Wrench 10;
  • Special syringe for filling oil into the box.

How to change oil in automatic transmission BMW E39

To get started, you need a series of preparations. In the beginning, find yourself a helper. Then, find a room with a car lift (the hole will not fit, the rear wheels should rotate freely). And in conclusion, it is necessary that this room be warm, otherwise the thickened oil will not drain well.

1) Raise the machine on a jack and unscrew the drain plug with a small hex wrench.

2) Place the container and wait for the oil to drain.

3) Using a 10 key, carefully unscrew the pallet. If the bolts are acidic, use VD-40.

4) The insides of the checkpoint are visible.

5) Clean the sump with gasoline and a paintbrush.

7) Unscrew the filler plug with a large hex wrench.

8) Be careful not to damage it with a screwdriver, otherwise you will have to tinker a lot with unscrewing.

9) Install a new oil filter and pan gasket.

10) Install the pallet, screw the drain plug.

11) Arm yourself with a special syringe.

12) And pour in the oil until it flows back.

13) Tighten the filler plug, but do not overtighten.

14) Ask an assistant to start the engine.

15) Unscrew the plug. Don't worry, the oil will not flow as the torque converter has already pulled it in during operation.

16) Add oil until it crawls back.

17) Again, do not tighten the plug completely.

18) Now the assistant must switch the automatic transmission to all modes in turn.

19) After that, the box must be transferred to Drive (D) and the car must be “accelerated” to 140 -160 km / h. Control the process of switching steps, there should be no jerks and jerks.

20) Have a helper move the selector to position N (P will work too).

21) Add oil again as much as will fit.

22) Then tighten the plug to the end, turn off the engine and remove the car from the lift.

As you can see, the process of changing the oil in the BMW e39 automatic transmission is not too difficult, the main difficulties lie in the field of preparation, since it is not easy to find a garage with a car lift.

If you did everything correctly, then the automatic transmission will faithfully serve you all the required resource until the next replacement. That's all, good luck on the road!
