Ground clearance - the distance from the bottom of the car to the road - is also called ground clearance. This parameter is very important in Russia. After all, it allows you to overcome the terrible ruts that sometimes form in the summer heat even on federal highways.

It happens that official parking lots on the sidewalk are separated from the roadway by a high curb. And these are just the problems that drivers encounter on public roads. And what awaits him on dirt roads and when trying to drive up to a place of rest or fishing? Here, sharp changes in the terrain often make one think about the angles of approach and departure, as well as the angle of the ramp.

But that is not all. On the weak, it is difficult to overestimate the presence of all-wheel drive. So Ground clearance is not all that a motorist needs for “off-road happiness.” And yet, today we will look at which relatively inexpensive cars have ground clearance that will allow a serious “trouble” to pass between the wheels: for example, a Zhiguli tire lying on the road.

Renault Duster and its co-platforms

Technically they are largely identical. The “bottom” is absolutely the same, and therefore we can talk about them in bulk: permanent drive on the front axle and a “rear” connected by an electromagnetic clutch; there are also front-wheel drive modifications, which, basically, “crawl” into our price limit - up to a million rubles.

The founder of the family, Duster, is the cheapest - from 699,000 rubles. The price of Renault Kaptur is from 879,000 rubles, Nissan Terrano - from 930,000 rubles. The declared ground clearance for all is 205 mm, but for us it is no more than 195 mm under the protection of the engine compartment when the car is unloaded.

Lada Vesta Cross

Vesta in the off-road version got quite, equal to 203 mm according to the plant. Our measurements show 200 mm. The Vesta Cross SW station wagon has the same base and the same bumpers, and therefore the same geometric cross-country ability as the sedan. In my opinion, the car is quite decent in terms of cross-country ability; Too bad all-wheel drive isn't available.

Unfortunately, derived from the Renault Sandero Stepway (clearance 205 mm), it did not gain the same high clearance. In the process of evolution, some suspension elements similar to West’s began to be installed on it. This improved its behavior on the road, but it was not possible to increase the ground clearance. It is only 185 mm.

Lada 4x4

The progenitor of all crossovers remains true to itself: permanent all-wheel drive, low weight and short overhangs are combined with a good ground clearance of 200 mm. You will have to pay from 518,000 rubles for a car that has become a living classic.

The ground clearance, as well as for long-wheelbase five-door cars, will remain almost the same, but the “corner geometry” will be worse. In the first case, beautiful bumpers suffer, and in the second, there is a high risk of sitting on your belly due to the increased angle of the ramp.

Chevrolet Niva

One of the few “crusaders” remaining on official sale in Russia can be purchased for 588,000 rubles. Some dealers promise a ground clearance of 220 mm. Although, according to the results of our measurements, it cannot be more than 200 mm. Cross-country ability is good thanks to permanent all-wheel drive with reduction gear and center differential lock.

UAZ family

UAZ Patriot (priced from 794,900 rubles), according to our measurements, has a ground clearance of 205 mm. Moreover, this clearance is up to the gearbox of the rigid bridge beam, which can cut through the ground a little, and is only afraid of stones, natural and curbs.

Cars with high ground clearance have significant advantages over cars with low ground clearance. The word itself came to us from the English language. Ground clearance is the distance from the lowest point in the vehicle structure to the supporting surface. The lowest point is located in the central area of the car's bottom; many car owners get confused, and I consider the car's bumper to be the starting point. This is not true. Mudguards and wheels are not included in the control zone. Therefore, it is so important to take into account the central rectangle between the inner surfaces of the wheels as a reference point.

The significance and all the advantages of a car with high ground clearance can hardly be overestimated. Today, many Russian car enthusiasts dream of getting behind the wheel of a car that will not be afraid of snowdrifts and already annoying potholes on the highway. Cars with high ground clearance practically do not suffer from damage to the bumper, components and assemblies located under the bottom. But in times of crisis, many people cannot afford such cars. Let's try to find out which cars can rightfully consider themselves leaders in this segment, while combining high ground clearance and an affordable price.

High clearance sedans

Sedan cars are most widespread throughout Europe. Such cars have a presentable appearance and are convenient to move around a densely populated city. For many people, vacations outside the city fade into the background, but in everyday city life, a sedan with high ground clearance is becoming increasingly important for them. After all, sometimes you have to park along the curb, and the level of asphalt in big cities is not always of high quality.

Hyundai Solaris

The Hyundai Solaris sedan has a good ground clearance of 160 mm. For cars with this type of body, the ground clearance varies from 14 to 20 cm. Hyundai Solaris is loved by domestic car owners due to its attractive appearance, comfortable and spacious interior.

The car has excellent dynamic characteristics. Other benefits of Solaris include:

  • Option to choose from a 1.6-liter or 1.4-liter engine. The first produces a power of 123 hp, and the second version of the engine has a power of 107 horsepower;
  • Independent front suspension with McPherson struts;
  • Low fuel consumption - 5 liters per 100 km on the highway, and 7.6 in city mode;
  • Possibility of choosing a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Of course, this car has taken a strong position in its segment, and it is likely that it will remain there for a long time.

The advantage of this car is its low price. You can always find great options on the secondary market. However, many are scared off by the design of the car, therefore, Chevrolet Lanos did not live up to expectations. But a sedan with a ground clearance of 160 mm definitely deserves a portion of attention.

Chevrolet Lanos boasts:

  • 1.5 liter engine and 86 horsepower;
  • Reliable 5-speed gearbox;
  • Acceleration to 100 km in 12.5 s;
  • Volumetric interior;
  • Comfortable seating.

The car is not without its shortcomings. Many are unhappy with Chevrolet Lanos. You can find reviews online that say that Lanos consumes about 10 liters in city mode.

Japanese high-end car with high ground clearance. The Nissan Almera has a lot of advantages over its competitors, but the ground clearance is only 15 centimeters. But this is quite enough for a comfortable ride within the city.

It is worth noting the following advantages of Nissan Almera:

  • Powerful 1.5-liter engine with 102 horsepower;
  • Acceleration to hundreds with manual transmission in 10 seconds;
  • Volume tank – 50 liters;
  • Option to choose between a 5-speed manual transmission and a 4-speed automatic transmission;
  • Executive design.

It is also worth considering that this is a Japanese car, which means reliability and durability. Nissan Almera copes well with the harsh Russian climate and low fuel quality.

SUVs with high ground clearance

Outside the city, an SUV copes best with off-road conditions. This is an excellent tool for overcoming obstacles in your path. But it’s very difficult to “feed” such a monster in a crisis. But you can’t argue with the fact that an SUV’s high ground clearance is an honor for the car and the owner.

Chevrolet TrailBlazer

A real giant on wheels. Ground clearance is as much as 255 mm. With such a car there are no obstacles to fear. Plus, the wheelbase is phenomenal – 2845 mm. The Chevrolet TrailBlazer combines all the properties of a true mountain conqueror.

A high-quality interior, a powerful engine and a striking appearance make the TrailBlazer one of the most sought-after representatives in its segment.

Chevrolet Niva

This is an excellent family car. Plus, the Chevrolet Niva is an excellent guide when going fishing or hunting.

Let's note the advantages of Niva:

  • Availability. A car can be purchased for 510 thousand rubles;
  • Ground clearance – 200 mm;
  • Good handling, all-wheel drive;
  • High-torque engine, presence of differential.

So to speak, the Chevrolet Niva is the best option for those who like to go out into nature with the whole family and visit the far north.

List of high clearance crossovers

Crossovers are putting up a worthy fight to SUVs. In themselves they are station wagons and have high ground clearance. A distinctive feature of the crossover can be considered its excellent handling in the winter season. A prestigious crossover with high ground clearance is worth its weight in gold today.

A true fashionista among crossovers. Land Rover E-Voque has a striking exterior design and a ground clearance of 22 centimeters. The car is perfect for men and women.

Other advantages:

  • High-quality sound insulation;
  • Efficiency – 10.5 liters in the city, which is a decent indicator for a car of this class;
  • Practical interior, high-quality finishing, the presence of various functional features;
  • Availability of a high-quality engine: 2.2 liters, 190 horsepower.

But there is also a significant drawback - the stiff suspension, which is quite noticeable on a car of this kind.

You can drive a Toyota RAV4 through any terrain, because the ground clearance is as much as 19.7 centimeters.

Yes, not too much, but what a wheelbase - as much as 2660 mm

Let's highlight the advantages of the machine:

  • Front and rear disc brakes;
  • Perfect handling;
  • Huge salon;
  • Engine 2.5 liters, automatic transmission.

Many Toyota RAV4 owners note the high consumption of the car. In urban conditions, in some cases, per 100 km, you will need as much as 12 liters of fuel.

Station wagons with high ground clearance

Universal cars speak for themselves - they are ready for any road surface. Such machines are perfect for those who do not sit in one place. An excellent option for those who like to travel with the whole family.

Opel Zafira

A comfortable car that can accommodate seven passengers. The “feature” of the model is the Flex7 system, with its help you can change the interior space of the car to any size within the body structure.

Let's note the following trump cards of the Opel Zafira:

  • Spacious interior;
  • Excellent cornering ability, acceptable sound insulation, minimal roll;
  • Availability of a 1.8-liter engine paired with a manual transmission;
  • Ease of repair and maintenance;
  • Ground clearance - 16 centimeters.

We get a decent car for family car enthusiasts.

The elegant Volvo XC70 station wagon was liked by many when it was born. The high ground clearance in the new model is also pleasing – as much as 20 centimeters. In 2015, a version of the car with a turbodiesel engine appeared, which increased the number of car sales.

The owner of a Volvo XC70 will have at his disposal a practical, economical car with all the latest technological innovations.

List of minivans with high ground clearance

An exotic type of car for Russia, but passing by minivans, especially those with high ground clearance, is simply unacceptable. Interest in such cars is growing every year, so we have selected the best cars from this class.

The ground clearance of this vehicle is 120 mm. Renault Espace is a large and comfortable car that is not afraid of off-road conditions. Many people prefer the Renault Espace due to its spacious and comfortable interior. The 1.9 liter diesel engine has excellent power and speed characteristics.

Many people call Renault Espace nothing more than a “cruising yacht”. This is the best high ground clearance minivan available today.

This is a real traveler car. The car's ground clearance is 190 mm, which means you can drive such a car to visit relatives even in the far north. Many people fell in love with this French minivan due to its exterior. The inside of the cabin is cozy and spacious, it is possible to adjust the seats, move them, move them back.

The driving performance of the car is at a high level, good handling, in general, what else does a real traveler need?

Hatchbacks with high ground clearance

Hatchbacks are compact and visually attractive. These cars are in high demand among domestic car enthusiasts. But sometimes the ground clearance of such cars is not very good for our roads. But there are models with high ground clearance.

A compact and cozy hatchback with a ground clearance of 15 centimeters. With such a car, road potholes are not scary. The drive is only front-wheel drive, so driving into deep jungle with such a car is not recommended. The car is equipped with only one type of engine – 1.2 TSI, and the power is 105 horses. A distinctive feature can be considered a good body kit of the car; the bumper is made of durable plastic, it is very difficult to scratch it.

The engine is torquey, driving such a car you get only positive emotions, which is what most Scoda Fabia Scout owners note online. If there are more such cars, then we can say with confidence that hatchbacks with high ground clearance are capable of winning a huge army of fans.

Reliability is the middle name of the Suzuki SX4. For Russians, a car version with a 1.6-liter engine is available. The output is a power motor with a power of 112 horses. As for the transmission, the client holds all the cards. You can choose a configuration with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission.

The car's ground clearance is 17.5 centimeters, which is quite decent for a vehicle as a representative of the hatchback class.

Small cars with high ground clearance

Small cars destroy all stereotypes. After all, many believe that high ground clearance is for the real giants of the road - SUVs. But, as practice has shown, small cars are capable of combining efficiency, practicality, reliability and high ground clearance. Let us highlight the main representatives from this segment.

The ground clearance of the Daewoo Matiz is about 150 mm, the wheelbase is 2340 mm, independent suspension and low consumption are a bonus for the car owner.

This cozy car is also different:

  • Availability;
  • Mechanical capability;
  • Door lock.

Yes, there is no luxury to be found here. But at a very affordable price of 300 thousand rubles, this is a decent and pleasant set of functions.

A true legend from Fiat. This model is loved by many. Fiat 500 is a three-door hatchback with a ground clearance of 130 mm. Not too much, but enough for a miniature car. The car costs twice as much as the Daewoo Matiz, but it already comes with other functionality in various trim levels.

Fiat 500 is distinguished by the presence of:

  • Air conditioning;
  • Airbags;
  • , B.A.S.

A small 1.2-liter gasoline engine consumes about 6.2 liters in urban conditions. Much less on the highway. You can purchase a Fiat 500 with a 1.4-liter engine, which has impressive speed performance.

A car in Russia is primarily a means of transportation, both on and off-road. Moreover, it is often difficult to understand where the first ones begin and the second ones end. Hence the increased interest in such a characteristic as vehicle clearance. Let's figure out why it's so important, what it means, and provide clearance tables for different cars for comparison.

Ground clearance is nothing more than the clearance between the road surface and the lowest part of the car. Scientifically, of course, everything sounds a little different, but let's look at things realistically. What you catch on a cobblestone, and God forbid you damage the car, will be the lowest point for your car, and the boiling point for you when you remember all the unprintable words and expressions.

What can we perform there?

The first thing that will suffer when encountering a deep pothole or an open sewer hatch is, of course, the front bumper. As soon as the car dives into such a hole (look at the photo), you are guaranteed a split bumper. Let's not talk about dented wheels and sills now.

There are no general standards, but there are average values for cars, family cars, and SUVs that reflect the ground clearance (distance from the front bumper to the asphalt):

  • for SUVs from 18 to 35 cm;
  • for passenger cars from 13 to 20 cm.

Next in line for the “breakdown”, and in the direction of travel, we have the oil pan. That's who gets it to the fullest. No, no, you’ll hear from a friend that he broke through the pan. And this is already a very expensive repair. The pan itself, changing the oil, or even worse, if you didn’t immediately notice the breakdown and drove for some significant distance without oil. Quite often, the clearance between the pan and the ground is even less than from the bumper. To be precise, it is not the pallet itself that sticks out, but its protection. But it’s better to let the ground clearance decrease slightly, by a few centimeters due to protection, than to drive at the risk of damaging the pan.

Here the values are almost the same:

  1. for an SUV on average from 17 cm;
  2. for a passenger car from 12 cm.

Elements of the front suspension of some cars (levers, rods) can also significantly reduce ground clearance. Don’t forget about the muffler with a resonator, which, although recessed into the bottom, can easily get caught on the road on some car models.

At one time, as the owner of a VAZ 2112 car, during a year of operation, I managed to puncture the gas tank three times. This is all to blame, of course, for the disgusting directions and also weak rear springs, because of which the ground clearance in the middle part of my car was indecently small, and at any opportunity I clung to obstacles with this element. After the third time, I was already seriously concerned about this issue (I still think, why not after the second), and I changed the springs along with the tank. I installed new ones from model 11, since it is half a turn longer. I really don’t know if this solved the problem, because I sold the car almost immediately.

Let's get back to talking about clearance. The comparison table below shows the difference between the ground clearance of passenger cars and large SUVs with increased clearance. These values are declared by the manufacturers in accordance with GOST, which defines ground clearance as the distance from the supporting surface to the lowest point in the central part of the car. With its help, you can easily compare the ground clearance of cars.

Passenger cars with the highest ground clearance are highlighted in bold.

How to change car clearance

The most win-win option was and remains to go to a car dealership, to the car market, and choose a vehicle with high ground clearance. And this is best timed to coincide with the spring melting of asphalt in our country, when high ground clearance will come in handy.

But seriously, there are several ways.

You can install wheels with a larger diameter. You might win an inch or two. True, this may affect the accuracy of instrument readings, such as the speedometer, but you still have to sacrifice something. It’s common practice for us to increase the diameter of the wheels until they fit in the arches. Don't fit? It’s not a sin to cut down the arches. A hunter I know, when “lifting” a cornfield, first sawed out and welded the arches, then changed the gearbox to a 4-mortar, since the standard one cannot withstand such radical changes. Even if it now howls at high speeds, even if it cannot reach the speed that it could before. The main thing is that she copes perfectly with the task that the owner entrusted to her (driving through forests and fields in search of game).

I have already mentioned the second method above. You can install reinforced springs, a higher strut, and various spacers, which can increase the clearance to one degree or another. This may affect the car's cornering stability, but it's not so critical that you don't want to try it.

Cars with variable ground clearance are far from uncommon now, but the cost of these cars is by no means for the middle class. Therefore, craftsmen come up with various mechanisms and designs. Here you have air suspensions of your own production, and screw struts with manual adjustment.

In a word, you just have to want, spend a little (a lot) of time and money, and solve the issue with the clearance of your car.

Meanwhile, hatchbacks with high ground clearance are in particular demand, which is understandable: high ground clearance increases the vehicle's cross-country ability, allowing it to easily overcome all sorts of obstacles - and with our roads this skill is absolutely priceless! That is why today's article is devoted to hatchbacks with high ground clearance.

Ford Fusion

It would be reasonable to start our review with this model as one of the most famous among tall hatchbacks. It first began being produced in 2002 in Geneva, after which it quickly gained popularity far beyond its borders. And for good reason - this high-quality and affordable car seems to be created for trouble-free off-road driving!
The undoubted advantages of this model include a spacious, comfortable interior, a fairly low cost, an increased level of safety and high ground clearance - at least 185 millimeters!

Opel Mokka

In connection with the conversation about tall hatchbacks, this model cannot be ignored - for obvious reasons. The mini-crossover, whose debut took place again at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012, pleases the eye with its impressive design, on which more than one German auto artist has worked hard. In addition to its appearance, it boasts a lot of technical advantages - increased ground clearance (200 mm), a plastic body kit and fairly small overhangs.

Volkswagen GrossPolo

The presentation took place in the fall of 2005 at the German auto show, where Grosse Polo won universal recognition. The traditional hatchback version is distinguished by increased ground clearance (by 1.5 cm), a plastic body kit and roof rails. Among the innovations we can also highlight the modified appearance of the headlights, silver-plated mirrors and the presence of personalized stickers on the sides of the car. Fans of powerful and strong cars will also be attracted by the catchy sporty design of this model.

Chevrolet Aveo

The hatchback debuted at the Paris Motor Show in 2010. In terms of technical characteristics, this model is significantly superior to its predecessors - its road capability has significantly increased due to the high ground clearance (150 mm!), and the design has become brighter and more aggressive.

Toyota Corolla

It was even listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the best-selling car in the world. Compared to previous generations, this model has a taller body, a more refined appearance, and a higher seating position for passengers and drivers.

There are a lot of cars with high ground clearance; it is impossible to list all the models in one article, but we will consider the most popular of them, those that are in great demand in the automobile market.

Option "bad road package"

When choosing a car, many buyers pay attention to its ground clearance, and this is natural, because the vehicle’s cross-country ability depends on the ground clearance, and this is an important advantage in our operating conditions.

As a rule, jeeps, crossovers, and SUVs have high ground clearance.

But many manufacturers, meeting the buyer who does not want to buy an expensive car, but at the same time dreams of becoming the owner of a car with high ground clearance, are introducing a special “package for bad roads” option for sedans and hatchbacks.

As a rule, this package provides:

  1. This model has increased ground clearance compared to its European counterpart, usually 3-5 cm;
  2. Reinforced chassis (levers – thickened polyhedral steel, reinforced springs, shock absorbers);
  3. Adaptation of the engine to our operating conditions (to our fuel);
  4. Factory installed engine protection;
  5. Other options depending on vehicle model.

But you need to take into account that the automaker indicates the ground clearance, measured on an empty car, with passengers and cargo in the trunk, the ground clearance will decrease by a couple of centimeters, so many car owners, after purchasing a car, immediately try to increase this parameter using, but this is another topic for conversation. And now about the main thing.

High ground clearance SUVs

There are many modifications of the car, as a rule they all have all-wheel drive.

Here are the ground clearance parameters for some models:

  1. Nissan Patrol (Y62(2014)) with an engine capacity of 5.6 liters has a ground clearance of 273 mm.
  2. Model Y62 5.6 4WD 2010 – 2014 – 275 mm.
  3. Y61 models from 2004 to 2013 by modification: 3.0 TD 4WD, 4.8 4WD – 220 mm.
  4. Y61 models from 2002 to 2004 by modification: GR 3.0 TD 4WD, GR 4.8 4WD -220 mm.
  5. Y61 models from 1997 to 2002 by modification: GR 2.8 TD 4WD, GR 3.0 TD 4WD, GR 4.2 TD 4WD, GR 4.5 4WD – 220 mm.

Since 2007, only the all-wheel drive modification of the car has been supplied to Russia; it belongs to the class of full-size SUVs (until 2003, mid-size).

The 5.6-liter V-shaped eight-cylinder engine with a 7-speed automatic transmission develops a power of 405 hp.

Ground clearance for Infiniti QX80257 mm.

Mercedes-Benz GL.

Belongs to the class of full-size crossovers, since 2015 - GLS-class.

There are two generations of the car, X164 (produced from 2006 to 2012) and X166 (produced since 2012).

The following were restyled:

  1. The first generation of X164 in 2009 (for example, the GL 450 CDI restyling model);
  2. The second is the X166 in 2015 (GLS 350d, restyling).

With the size of the ground clearance of the Mercedes-Benz GL, not everything is clear; the fact is that the car is equipped with air suspension, for example, in the first generation X164 it is present on all models. Finding a car without air suspension is quite problematic.

Accordingly, the ground clearance of the Mercedes-Benz GL (GLS) is adjustable, the maximum is 307 mm, the minimum is 205 mm.

Belonging to the SUV class is a rather rare car on our roads. 50% of produced units have all-wheel drive.

Refers to cars with high ground clearance; depending on the model, the ground clearance can be 178, 180 and 203 mm.

Land Rover Range Rover.

The well-known SUV, equipped with air suspension, is perfect for use in our conditions.

Depending on the modification, it has different ground clearance, which can vary from 221 to 295 mm.

Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro (USA).

There are two modifications of this car: Toyota 4Runner and Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro.

In the first case, this is a regular version of the car, developed for the US market. Depending on the modification and year of manufacture, the ground clearance for this model can be 221, 228, 229, 231 and 244 mm.

Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is a car specially designed for off-road driving. The introduced design innovations (and there are quite a few of them) made it possible to increase the vehicle's ground clearance to 283 mm.

Jeep Grand Cherokee.

All-wheel drive SUV with high ground clearance. Depending on the modification, year of manufacture (from 1992 to 2013) and type of suspension, ground clearance can be 200, 210, 218, 221 mm.

The latest versions of the car were produced with Quadra Lift air suspension, thanks to which the Jeep Grand Cherokee's ground clearance can be increased to 282 mm.

Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk.

A compact SUV with all-wheel drive, specially designed for off-road driving. It has a ground clearance of 221 mm, while its predecessor Jeep Cherokee has a ground clearance of only 151 mm.

Crossovers with high ground clearance

It occupies one of the leading positions among all-wheel drive crossovers with high ground clearance. The vehicle's ground clearance is 270 mm.

In Europe, one of the best-selling models from Audi; a special highlight of the car is the transmission with Quattro technology.

A sports all-wheel drive crossover with a low ground clearance of 205 mm for this type of vehicle. But given the sporty nature of the car, this figure is acceptable.

The crossover can cope with moderately difficult off-road conditions with a bang.

Volkswagen Touareg.

Depending on the generation and modification, the ground clearance of the car can be 200, 220, 230 and 237 mm, and for the off-road version with air suspension 300 mm.

Therefore, the Volkswagen Touareg in all generations can safely be classified as a car with high ground clearance.

Skoda Octavia Scout.

The all-wheel drive mid-size crossover was specially designed for off-road travel and the ground clearance of 171 mm fully provides it with such capabilities.

Belongs to the class of mid-size crossovers. On the Russian market since 2006 and during this time it has gained great popularity. Therefore, it is not surprising that in 2014 an updated version of the car (II) appeared on the market.

There are front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions of the car.

The car's ground clearance is:

  1. All-wheel drive version with 16-inch wheels – 190 mm;
  2. Front-wheel drive version with 15-inch wheels – 165 mm, with 16-inch wheels – 175 mm;
  3. For the second generation SX4 (II) – 180 mm.

Depending on the country of assembly (Hungary or Japan), the ground clearance may change up or down, but not more than 10 mm.

Compact SUV. Two generations of the car were produced in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.

Depending on the generation, modification, year of manufacture and type of drive, the Acura RDX can have a ground clearance of 159 mm (130 mm when fully loaded) and 205 mm, which provides it with decent off-road capability.

This is a mid-size crossover developed on the basis of the BMW E39 series. The letter "X" indicates that this is an all-wheel drive version of the car.

It has a ground clearance of 180 mm, in the E70 body – 212 mm.

Such ground clearance and all-wheel drive ensure confident movement of the car over moderately rough terrain.

It is worth paying attention to the domestic manufacturer - a new model with high ground clearance.

Station wagons with the highest ground clearance

A station wagon, which, depending on the year of manufacture of the model and the type of drive, has a different, but quite large ground clearance. The numbers are as follows - 190, 200, 210 mm, which is enough to overcome simple off-road areas.

Both all-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, and models with plug-in rear-wheel drive were produced.

Audi A4 allroad Quattro.

The five-door station wagon with a reinforced body is an improved modification of the A4 Avant.

Thanks to 17-inch alloy wheels and 180 mm ground clearance, the Audi A4 allroad Quattro has improved off-road qualities.

Five-door (three-door Sport version) hatchback with high ground clearance. With the exception of the sports version of the Suzuki Ignis Sport, which has a ground clearance of 160 mm, all other modifications with engines 1.2, 1.3, 1.5 have a ground clearance of 170 mm.

Skoda Octavia Combi.

One of the best station wagons on the automotive market. Available in various modifications (for the Russian market with suspension for bad roads).

Most models have ground clearance of 155 mm. But there are exceptions.

The Skoda Octavia Combi RS 2.0 TSI has a ground clearance of 127 mm. And the 1.8 TSI 4x4 modification has 154 mm.

It cannot be said that the station wagon has good cross-country ability; it is definitely comfortable for them to move in urban conditions or on flat roads, because the ground clearance of the Peugeot 308 SW varies from 160 to 170 mm, and if measured from the engine protection, this figure will hardly exceed 130 mm.

But we could not ignore this model, since the Peugeot 308 SW has an excellent interior transformation and the ability to transport large cargo, and such properties are not inherent in many station wagons.

In addition to the station wagon, the car is available in sedan and hatchback bodies, but we will focus on the first option.

Depending on the modification, the ground clearance of the car may be different, for example, on the Opel Insignia Country Tourer 2.0 Turbo 4×4 it is 175 mm, and on the 1.6 Turbo and 1.8 ECO it is 160 mm. But in general, the figure 160 is typical for most car models and does not go lower than this figure.

Citroen C5 tourer.

The ground clearance of a station wagon, depending on the model, varies from 150 to 165 mm. But you should understand that for a loaded Citroen C5 tourer this figure will decrease by 2-3 cm.

Below is a table of station wagon ground clearance depending on the modification of the car.

All-wheel drive minivans with high ground clearance

The seven-seater Toyota Alphard minivan, produced in Japan, immediately found its admirers both in Europe and in Russia.

Depending on the modification, the ground clearance of a given car may vary, but it does not fall below 160 mm.

For the Russian market, the car is produced with a ground clearance of 168 mm, which is considered a good indicator for this class of car.

It is produced in both all-wheel drive variations and with drive only to the wheel apron.

Three generations of the Toyota Sienna minivan were produced, which differed not only in configurations, but also in size.

The first generation Toyota Sienna was produced from 1997 to 2002. The ground clearance of the car is 135 mm.

The second generation of the car was produced from 2002 to 2009. Ground clearance – 175 mm.

The third generation has been produced since 2010 and, depending on the model modification, the ground clearance is 165, 168, 175 mm.

It is thanks to the second and third generations that the Toyota Sienna is considered a car with high ground clearance.

The minivan has, depending on the modification, all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. Five generations of the car were produced.

From 1994 to 1999 - the first generation, from 1999 to 2003 the second, 2003 - 2008 - the third, 2008 - 2013 the fourth, from 2013 - the fifth generation.

In each generation, car models with different ground clearance were produced.

In the 1st generation it varied between 150 to 170 mm. In 2nd – 140, 155 and 165 mm. In the 3rd generation 150, 155 mm. In the 4th and 5th generations, the ground clearance of the Honda Odyssey is 145 and 150 mm.

It cannot be said that the figures are impressive, with the exception of some first-generation models, but the Honda Odyssey was mainly produced only for the markets of Canada, the USA, Mexico, South Korea and a number of other countries.

Mitsubishi Delica.

A real four-wheel drive minibus, produced in five generations.

Depending on the generation and modification, the vehicle's ground clearance can be 140, 160, 165, 170, 180, 190, 205, 210 mm.

But most Mitsubishi Delica models are produced with ground clearance of 160, 170, 180, 190 mm, so this car has good cross-country ability.

To this list we can safely add the 2017 model, which has a ground clearance of 210 mm.

To be continued.
