  • the output of the unit increased by 11% (up to 82 "horses" in the 8-valve version), such a device of the engine led to an increase in torque to 132 Nm;
  • the cooling system has undergone adjustments (the need for this revision is caused by an increase in engine power);
  • the cooling circuit did not receive fundamental design changes, and its elements were refined in order to achieve greater performance, for which some new components were integrated, which led to an increase in the resource and efficiency of the system, especially at critical operating modes;
  • power increase up to 102 liters. With. achieved thanks to the use of new components in the units of the cylinder-piston group and the valve mechanism:
  • the number of valves doubled (from 8 to 16), which ensured better filling of the combustion chambers with the mixture and led to an increase in power and dynamic capabilities;
  • the resource of the motor has significantly increased due to the use of parts from new, more durable alloys;
  • after applying the previously indicated design solutions in the updated engines, Renault Logan developers managed to achieve significant fuel efficiency:
  • 1.5 liters at a distance of 100 km on a 1.6 engine with 16 valves;
  • 1.0 liter in the case of 8-valve engine versions.

All these innovations made it possible to substantially make a 1.6 liter engine. more modern (especially the 16-valve version), the engine resource has become higher. Although the developers did not use progressive and innovative design solutions, this engine upgrade for Renault Logan still allowed attracting a large army of new potential customers to the updated model.

In addition to constructive innovations, these units began to meet the requirements of Euro-5 environmental standards. In the future, the model manufacturer Renault Logan planned to bring the engine device to the level of compliance with Euro 6/7 standards.

The update of the 1.6-liter unit was not limited to the use of a 16-valve head mechanism. Achievement of an increase in traction and power characteristics was carried out thanks to significant transformations, including:

On the durability and maintainability of motors

The operating experience of 1.6-liter engines did not reveal significant shortcomings in both modifications of 8 or 16 valves (16-valve with 102 hp and 8-valve - 82 "forces"). According to the manufacturer, the resource of these units is about 200 thousand km, and what value this parameter will have in reality depends on the owner of Renault Logan. Accordingly, the reviews of car owners on this matter are positive.

If all routine maintenance is performed in a timely manner and in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, then the engine resource can reach 400 thousand km, which is confirmed by numerous real examples. The only unpleasant surprise may be a broken timing belt, as evidenced by reviews. In the event of such an accident, the pistons collide with the valves, causing them to bend or completely collapse.

To a large extent, such popularity of these Renault models was ensured by the use of single-shaft internal combustion engines (ICEs) of the K7J 1.4 l and K7M 1.6 l series as power units on them as power units. The flagship of the line for Renault Logan is considered to be a 16V four-cylinder liquid cooling unit with the K4M index, the production of which, in addition to the parent company Renault Espana, is also mastered at the production sites of AvtoVAZ. Renault Logan K7M 710 engine and its successor K7M 800 (produced by the same Automobile Dacia) 1.6 liters and 86 hp. (K7M 800 - 82 hp) in design almost completely coincide with the K7J, they are also liquid-cooled, but they have a piston stroke increased by 10.5 mm, obtained by changing the height of the block. A different clutch and flywheel (larger diameter) is also used, and the transmission case has minor shape changes. The resource of K7M also exceeds 400 thousand km in mileage. Dynamic characteristics of the engine: speed at a maximum of 172 km / h, 100 km / h - in 11.9 seconds, in contrast to 1.4.

The greatest differences in design and performance are observed in the K4M engine, despite the fact that this ICE is 1.6 liters and 102 hp. is also just another development of the K7M series. All-new 16-valve cylinder head with two lightweight camshafts and a new piston system. Here, finally, the need for constant adjustment of the internal combustion engine valves through fairly short runs is eliminated, and the simple use of well-known hydraulic compensators is eliminated. The motor accelerates the car to 100 km / h in 10.5 seconds, reaching a maximum of 180 km - quite good performance. There are no frankly weak points in this unit: the necessary changes have been made to the system in terms of the pump and thermostat, the ignition module has also undergone revision.

Advantages and disadvantages of powertrains

Significant experience in operating Renault cars with all three types of liquid-cooled engines makes it possible to draw up a fairly objective picture of their strengths and weaknesses, and for two models K7J and K7M these characteristics are almost identical, and only the K4M engine has significant differences due to more modern technological solutions. and which is better, it is up to the buyers to decide.

Advantages of the K7J and K7M:

  • low cost and simplicity of engine design;
  • reliability: the confirmed motor resource is more than 400 thousand km;
  • versatility and maintainability;
  • ease of maintenance;
  • high torque;
  • good "elasticity" of engines, equal to 1.83.

Disadvantages of K7J and K7M:

  • relatively high fuel consumption;
  • instability of revolutions when idling;
  • the absence of hydraulic compensators in the design, as a result - the need for constant valve adjustment (after 20-30 thousand km);
  • "Bend" of the valves in case of a sudden breakage of the timing belt;
  • increased "fluidity" of the crankshaft oil seals;
  • weak reliability of the elements of the cooling system;
  • noise and vibration tendency.

The advantages of the K7M model over the K7J can be attributed only to the maximum power increased by 12% and the maximum torque by 11%. But for these advantages, the internal combustion engine of 1.6 liters pays with an increased appetite of 4.5%, therefore, which is better is a moot point.

Advantages of K4M:

  • reliability, practical resource exceeds 400 thousand km of run;
  • compliance with environmental standards Euro-4;
  • increased power (102 hp);
  • low noise and vibration resistance;
  • more modern and reliable cooling system.

Compared to 8-valve motors, the K4M 16V is much quieter, vibration-free and has the same resource, but significantly more power and torque.

Disadvantages of the K4M motor:

  • expensive spare parts;
  • "Bend" of the valves when the belt breaks;
  • weak "elasticity" of the engine, equal to 1.53, as a result - problems with the acceleration of the car when overtaking.

Thus, a detailed analysis of the technical characteristics of all three ICE samples, as well as practical experience in operating Renault Logan with these power plants, allows you to determine which engine is better. The more powerful 1.6 liter liquid-cooled internal combustion engine is still somewhat preferable to its "big brother" 1.4 liter. Power 75 hp it is simply not enough for comfortable control of a laden car either on a suburban road or in short “dashes” around the city. And in the dispute between a 16V motor and 8V, the first sample is the undisputed leader. The only characteristic by which 16V loses to its opponent is “elasticity”. For the rest of the characteristics, 16V is better. Renault's liquid-cooled V16 engine is simply much more modern and gives the driver more options.

My autohistory:

Advantages of the car

1. Very roomy salon - for a family mom + dad + 2 children + mother-in-law - fits perfectly. The back seat accommodates 2 child seats and another mother-in-law (165 cm, 75 kg). The trunk includes 2 kids' bicycles with side wheels !, or a petrol lawn mower, or a bunch of things, the trunk lid arches get in the way a little, but you can get used to it. But the lid opens very wide.

2. The cabin is quiet enough when driving up to 100 km / h. Additional soundproofing (Prestige version) was not required, although before buying the car, I read the noise reviews and planned to do it. The budget for additional sound insulation is 17,000-25,000 rubles. in the RENAULT "Avtomir" salon. Lucky Motors said they wouldn't do such nonsense at all ...

3. Excellent suspension and geometry: 155 mm ground clearance under load and 2630 mm wheelbase. Comfortably passing speed bumps, pits and potholes. I drove along a broken country road with a rut, puddles 30 cm deep and gullies with four passengers - I drove easily. He asked the passengers to leave only a couple of times. On the way to the dacha - 2 km of country road - I fly like on asphalt. It's a shame to look at the owners of Mazda 3, Ford Focus and other low cars for a million, when they try to follow me through potholes, poor things. Once, a TOYOTA Highlander of the last generation on a broken country road (the road for trucks from 44 km EKAD to Ganina's pit) lagged behind me - it's a pity for an expensive car. And when later on the asphalt Toyota caught up with me and began to go around on the left - the driver almost leaned out into the right window to see who was going there in "this Logan" ... and then, when I drove around, I pressed down on the gas with irritation and a sparkle ... laughed.

4. Gasoline consumption: In the summer city / highway - 8.9 l / 6.7 l per 100 km. In winter, city / highway 11 l / 7.8 l per 100 km. In the city, I like to accelerate sharply, but on the highway I drive 90-110, overtake trucks, twist, the engine is up to 5000 rpm. I use the ER friction winner in the motor from the very first kilometers - I like it; one feels that the engine spins more easily and gasoline consumption is reduced by 0.5-1 liters per 100 km on the highway.

5. Excellent visibility from the front seats, and for children from child seats in the rear.

6. Living motor. Running in up to 28,000 km (with ER), after that I went lively. The torque is especially felt when I am driving alone. If the load is full, it is difficult to overtake on the track, only if with a large margin. I fill in 98th gasoline in the summer. The motor accelerates the car more quickly than on the 95th and 92nd. In winter, if it is colder than -25 degrees, - the 92nd, so that it is better to start in frost. The motor starts from half a turn at –32 degrees, no self-winding and WEBASTO. I also use a special blanket (Autoheat) in winter. The motor cools down with it more slowly.

7. Comfortable fit, especially in the rear seats - like on a sofa (compared to the Skoda Octavia and Volkswagen Golf 6 - you sit there like in a basin).

8. Convenient rear doors. The back is convenient to seat children and load, for example, a TV.

9. Good head light: low beam - the angle of inclination of the headlights is regulated and the high beam hits 150-200 m. Enough for driving 90-110 km / h on a night highway.

10. Clear and convenient service. THAT after 15,000 km according to the regulations, I do it more often. 1, 2 and 3 TO - 8,000 rubles. I change the cabin filter myself, it costs up to 450 rubles, I try to change it every 2 months. In the summer I put on a coal one. 4 TO 60 000 km with replacement of the timing belt in the salon "Lucky Motors" promised to do for 17 000 rubles.

11. Driven like a small car (compared to the Skoda Octavia is a real ship).

12. Does not blow off a narrow highway (2 lanes for traffic without a dividing line) by the oncoming air flow from the truck when driving 110 km per hour and the truck towards 90 km / h (compared to VW Polo - it had to be carried away).

Disadvantages of the car

1. They are not respected on the road, if you hesitate a little, but when you go fast and show all the lane changes, it's normal.

2. Snow and dirt accumulate behind the seal on the upper edge of the doors. The snow freezes and turns into ice, you have to sweep it so that it does not fall into the cabin when you open the doors.

3. In wet (frosty) weather - the rear windows fog up (freeze).

4. No lumbar support in the driver's seat. All adjustments are stepwise, sometimes it is difficult to find a comfortable position. Back gets tired on long trips.

5. There are no regular hooks for the fixing net in the trunk.

6. Insufficient backward view when parking - it is better to order parking sensors (about 8,000 rubles), or a rear-view camera, or park in narrow spaces just in front. I hit the bumper twice (without consequences), but only in the first days of operation. Then you get used to it, and the dimensions are read very well.

7. It seemed to me that the interior cools down very quickly when you turn off the engine in winter, but this is subjective.

8. Aerodynamics - after 80 km / h the incoming air stream begins to whistle. You have to get used to it. Drag coefficient 0.36 (like a brick)

9. Dealer service is expensive.

10. Very often low beam lamps burn out. (Additional protection needed). I am already installing lamps with double the service life. I turn on the dipped beam no earlier than 1 minute after starting the engine. I close the hood very carefully. And still the lamp lasts for a maximum of 3 months. "Avtoframos" - do something with the light already !!!

11. Rear seats do not fold. Dear developers !!! Make already folding seats, all classmates have them fold. Sometimes it is necessary to carry a baby cot or an adult bicycle or something else completely oversized in a family car !!!

12. The tilt angle of the rear seat back does not change. If a 5-year-old child falls asleep in a chair, his head falls forward. It is necessary for the backrest to lean back and the baby would ride almost lying down.

General impression

I advise Logan to practical family people without an inferiority complex. Remember that in the car, the possibility of transforming the interior is limited. I do not advise young guys - you will regret buying.

The engine does not tolerate 92nd gasoline well. The dealer recommends an oil service every 15 thousand km. It includes almost 5 liters of 5W-40 or 5W-30 oil. Air filter and spark plugs typically last twice as long. The timing belt with rollers is replaced every 60 thousand km, the generator belt is usually changed along with it, the water pump runs 2 - 3 replacements.

Unlike a similar 8-valve engine, the sixteen-valve is much quieter, more economical and does not cause any inconvenience with strong vibrations. However, drivers note its imperfect elasticity; at high speeds, there is still not enough traction for confident overtaking.

The owners are also upset by the high cost of spare parts and their meager assortment in stores, compared to older models, as well as the lack of protection: when the timing belt breaks, the valves always bend against the pistons.

Engineers estimate its resource at about 400 thousand kilometers.
